ABSTRACT

Since the electroplating industry is springing up, effective control of phosphate has attracted global concerns. In this study, a novel biosorbent (MIL-88@CS-HDG) was synthesized by loading a kind of Fe-based metal organic framework called MIL-88 into chitosan hydrogel beads and applied in deep treatment of phosphate removal in electroplating wastewater. The adsorption capacities of H2PO4- on MIL-88@CS-HDG could reach 1.1 mmol/g (corresponding to 34.1 mg P/g and 106.7 mg H2PO4-/g), which was 2.65% higher than that on single MOF powders and chitosan hydrogel beads. The H2PO4- adsorption was well described by the Freundlich isotherm model. Over 90% H2PO4- could be adsorbed at contact time of 3 h. It could keep high adsorption capacity in the pH range from 2 to 7, which had a wider pH range of application compared with pure MIL-88. Only NO3- and SO42- limited the adsorption with the reduction rate of 11.42% and 23.23%, proving it tolerated most common co-existing ions. More than 92% of phosphorus could be recovered using NaOH and NaNO3. Electrostatic attraction between Fe core and phosphorus in MIL-88@CS-HDG and ion exchange played the dominant role. The recovered MIL-88@CS-HDG remained stable and applicable in the treatment process of real electroplating wastewater even after six adsorption-regeneration cycles. Based on the removal properties and superb regenerability, MIL-88@CS-HDG is potentially applicable to practical production.

ABSTRACT

Artemisia argyi (AA) is promising as a potential feed additive. Microbial fermentation is beneficial to the degradation of cell walls and the better release of bioactive compounds of AA. However, there are few reports on the application of fermented AA as a feed additive for broilers. The present study intended to evaluate the application value of fermented AA as a feed additive for broilers by examining the effects of the dietary supplementation of Aspergillus niger-fermented AA and unfermented AA on growth performance, slaughter performance, and meat quality of brokers. A total of 360 newly hatched (1-day-old) broilers with similar body weight were randomly divided into the following 5 groups: basal diet group as control (C) group, basal diet +3% unfermented AA (E1) group, basal diet + 1% fermented AA (E2) group, basal diet + 3% fermented AA (E3) group, basal diet + 5% fermented AA (E4) group. Each group included 6 replicates with 12 broilers per replicate, and the feeding trail lasted for 48 d. Body weight and feed intake were recorded every 2 wk, and the feed gain ratio was calculated to assess growth performance. At 42 d, 6 broilers from each group were slaughtered, and the carcass traits were calculated. The results showed that compared with the control group, Aspergillus Niger could effectively destroy AA fiber, which contributed to better release of AA bioactive compounds. Moreover, dietary supplementation with AA could improve the growth performance of broilers (P < 0.05), and the effect of fermented AA was better than unfermented AA, especially 3% fermented AA. From 28 to 42 d, compared with the control group, the average daily gain of broilers in the group supplementation with 3% fermented AA was significantly increased (P < 0.05), and the feed-to-gain ratio was decreased (P < 0.05). At 42 d, the dressing percentage, half-eviscerated carcass percentage, eviscerated carcass percentage, and breast muscle percentage of broilers in the groups of 1, 3, and 5% fermented AA diets were significantly improved (P < 0.05), and the thigh muscle percentage of broilers in the group with 3% fermented AA diets was significantly improved (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the meat quality of broilers in the group with fermented AA diets was also significantly improved. Birds in AA groups had higher a* value and lower shear force of breast muscle, especially the group supplementation with 3% fermented AA (P < 0.05). In conclusion, fermented AA has good application value as a potential feed additive for broilers, dietary supplementation of fermented AA can improve the production performance and meat quality of broiler chickens, of which 3% fermented AA is more effective.

ABSTRACT

Betaine has been found to alleviate oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. However, whether dietary betaine can protect late-laying hens against these adverse effects is unknown. Here, 270 65-week-old Jinghong-1 laying hens were randomly divided into the Control, 0.1% Betaine, and 0.5% Betaine groups and fed a basal diet, 0.1%, and 0.5% betaine supplemented diet, respectively. The trial lasted for seven weeks. Birds that consumed 0.5% betaine laid more eggs with thicker eggshells. Accordingly, uterine reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), and ovarian superoxide dismutase (SOD) contents were increased. The uterine calcium ion content and the mRNA expression of ovalbumin, ovotransferrin, and carbonic anhydrase two were increased. Moreover, ovarian IL-1ß, Caspase-1, Caspase-8, and Caspase-9 mRNA expressions were decreased; luteinising hormone receptor (LHR) and follicle-stimulating hormone receptor mRNA expressions were increased. Furthermore, dietary betaine decreased the ovaries' mRNA expression of DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT)1, DNMT3a, and DNMT3b. The methylation level at the promoter region of ovarian LHR decreased. These results indicated that dietary betaine consumption with a concentration of 0.5% could increase the laying rate and the eggshell thickness during the late-laying period. The underlying mechanism may include antioxidative, anti-apoptosis, and hormone-sensitivity-enhancing properties.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of the frequency of bowel movement for the patients with chronic severe functional constipation treated with acupuncture so as to provide the evidence for the clinical decision. METHODS: In this study, 813 patients with chronic severe functional constipation treated with acupuncture in two previous randomized controlled trials were included. Through the anchor-based method (anchored by the item 28 "satisfaction with previous treatment" of the patient assessment of constipation-quality of life [PAC-QOL]) and the distribution-based method, the MCID of the weekly frequency of complete spontaneous bowel movement (CSBM) and spontaneous bowel movement (SBM) was analyzed statistically in the patients. RESULTS: The MCID of the mean weekly frequency of CSBM and SBM was 1.3 times and 1.6 times in patients with chronic severe functional constipation treated with acupuncture, respectively. CONCLUSION: The mean increase of the weekly CSMB is ≥ 1.3 times and that of SBM is ≥ 1.6 times after treatment when compared with the baseline respectively, suggesting the clinical significance.

Background: Despite the remarkable progression in colon cancer treatment in recent years, the pathological mechanism underlying this disease remains unclear. This study aimed to discuss the potential of luteolin in the treatment of colon cancer, from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, with a particular focus on the tumor microenvironment. Methods: Reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blot were used to analyze the effects of luteolin on interleukin (IL)-6/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3)/Phospho-STAT3. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to analyze the protein secretion of IL-6. Proliferation and transwell assays were used to analyze the growth and migration of luteolin and IL-6 in colon cancer cells, respectively. Results: Stimulation with lipopolysaccharides (LPS) promoted the M1 polarization of macrophages and increased the expression and secretion of IL-6. However, the presence of luteolin inhibited the effects of LPS. M1 polarization increased the proliferation rate, migration and invasion ability, and phosphorylation of STAT3 in colon cancer cells (SW620 and SW480). Luteolin inhibited these effects by reducing M1 polarization. To confirm that the action of luteolin is mediated by IL-6/STAT3 signaling, we treated SW620 and SW480 cells with recombinant IL-6 protein and anti-IL-6 antibody. IL-6 was observed to promote cell proliferation, enhance migration and invasion, and increase STAT3 phosphorylation. The opposite effect was observed with the anti-IL-6 antibody. In addition, IL-6 promoted LPS-induced M1 polarization, while the anti-IL-6 antibody enhanced the decrease in luteolin-induced M1 polarization. Conclusions: Luteolin suppressed the growth and migration/invasion potential of colon cancer cells by inhibiting the IL-6/STAT3 signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Aspirin is a common drug for the treatment of pre-eclampsia. We aimed to explore whether quercetin as a supplement to aspirin could enhance the therapeutic outcome in pre-eclampsia rat models. We further aimed to evaluate the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor family, pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome as a potential pre-eclampsia-related molecular mechanism, which can be affected by quercetin treatment. METHODS: Rat pre-eclampsia models were established using an intravenous lipopolysaccharide injection after gestation. Rats were treated with aspirin and quercetin at 6-18 days after pregnancy. On day 20, blood, fetus, and placenta were harvested. Blood pressure and the level of proteinuria were measured every 4 days. Fetal outcomes were analyzed by pup body weight. Serum soluble Fms-like tyrosine kinase-1, PIGF, interleukin-6, and interleukin-10 levels were measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Caspase-1, NLRP3, apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain, and p-caspase-1 levels in the placenta were assessed using western blot or quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analyses. RESULTS: Pre-eclampsia rat models showed a pronounced increase in systolic blood pressure and proteinuria after 4 days of pregnancy, while aspirin, quercetin, and aspirin/quercetin combinatory treatment significantly attenuated the blood pressure and proteinuria abnormalities. Notably, the aspirin/quercetin combinatory treatment showed the highest efficacy in attenuating pre-eclampsia-like symptoms. Placental caspase-1 and NLRP3 levels also showed the greatest attenuation in pre-eclampsia rats after aspirin/quercetin treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggested that quercetin supplementation to aspirin is more effective in attenuating symptoms of pre-eclampsia and improving pregnancy outcomes compared with quercetin or aspirin alone. Quercetin can ameliorate placental NLRP3 inflammasome activation, which might serve as an underlying mechanism for its therapeutic efficacies in pre-eclampsia.

Background: The gut-cardiac axis theory provides new insights into the complex mechanisms of cardiac hypertrophy and provides new therapeutic targets. Cardiac hypertrophy is a risk factor for heart failure. Shengmaiyin (SMY) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula with clear effects in the treatment and prevention of cardiac hypertrophy, but the mechanism by which it improves cardiac hypertrophy is still unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the protective effect and mechanism of SMY on isoproterenol (ISO)-induced myocardial hypertrophy in rats. Methods: First, various pharmacodynamic methods were used to evaluate the therapeutic effect of SMY on ISO-induced myocardial hypertrophy in rats. Then, 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing technology was used to study the effect of SMY on the intestinal flora of rats with myocardial hypertrophy. Finally, the mechanism underlying the effect of SMY on cardiac hypertrophy was predicted by bioinformatics network analysis and verified by Western blotting. Results: SMY increased ejection fraction (EF%) and left ventricular fractional shortening (FS%), ameliorated myocardial cell injury and fibrosis, regulated blood lipids and energy metabolism, and decreased cardiac hypertrophy marker gene expression. The gut microbiota of ISO-induced myocardial hypertrophy rats were significantly changed, while SMY effectively ameliorated the dysbiosis of the intestinal flora in rats with myocardial hypertrophy, especially Prevotella 9, Lactobacillus, and Clostridium. Mechanistic studies have shown that the anticardiac hypertrophy effect of SMY is related to the inhibition of the expression of HIF1α/PPAR signalling pathway-related proteins. Conclusion: SMY significantly improves cardiac function, relieves myocardial cell fibrosis and necrosis, resists cardiac hypertrophy, improves blood lipid metabolism and energy metabolism, regulates intestinal microbial disturbance, and protects the heart.

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of the application of Buqi Huoxue Decoction combined with cardiac rehabilitation nursing for patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and its influence on the prognosis. Methods: 120 STEMI patients undergoing PCI were randomly divided into control group, cardiac care group, traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine group (TCM + WM group), and comprehensive treatment group. The control group was treated with a conventional antiplatelet therapy. On the basis of the control group, the cardiac care group was combined with cardiac care treatment. The TCM + WM group was combined with Buqi Huoxue Decoction, and the comprehensive treatment group was combined with cardiac rehabilitation care and Buqi Huoxue Decoction. The total clinical effective rate, readmission rate, and adverse reaction rate of the four groups were measured. Moreover, the myocardial injury markers (creatine kinase isoenzyme (CK-MB), cardiac troponin I (cTnI), and α-Hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (α-HBDH)), vascular endothelial function indexes (endothelin (ET-1) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)), cardiac function indexes (left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricle shortening rate (LFS), left ventricular end diastolic diameter (LVEDd), and left ventricular end systolic diameter (LVESd)), and QOL quality of life score (appetite, spirit, sleep, fatigue, and daily life) were measured. Results: The total effective rate of comprehensive treatment group was obviously increased versus to the control group and cardiac care group. The CK-MB, cTnI, α-HBDH, ET-1, LVEDd, and LVESd levels and SAS and SDS scores in the four groups were decreased, and VEGF, LVEF, and FS levels and QOL quality of life scores were increased after treatment. Moreover, the comprehensive treatment group has more significant changes than the other three groups. The readmission rate in comprehensive treatment group was significantly lower than the other three groups, and the difference in the incidence of adverse reactions in the four groups was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Buqi Huoxue Decoction combined with cardiac rehabilitation after PCI has a significant clinical effect on STEMI patients with PCI postoperative treatment, which can effectively reduce myocardial injury, improve the patient's cardiac function and vascular endothelial function, and improve the patient's quality of life, which can better improve the prognosis of patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To explore the molecular mechanism by which Shengmaiyin (Codonopsis pilosula) (SMY) improves isoproterenol (ISO)-induced heart failure (HF) in rats via a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) integrated pharmacology research platform, The Chinese Medicine Integrated Pharmacology Platform (TCMIP V2.0). METHOD: The chemical constituents and drug targets of SMY medicines were identified through TCMIP, and HF disease target information was collected. A prescription Chinese medicinecomponent- core target network was constructed through the TCM network mining module, and biological process and pathway enrichment analyses of core targets were conducted. In vivo experiments in rats were performed to verify the pathway targets. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was used to observe myocardial tissue morphology. ELISA kits were used to detect cAMP content, and Western blotting was used to detect the expression levels of signaling pathway-related proteins. RESULTS: The TCMIP analysis indicated that SMY treatment of HF activates the GS-ß-adrenergic receptor (ßAR)-cAMP-protein kinase A (PKA) signaling pathway. The in vivo experimental results confirmed this finding. High-dose SMY significantly improved the morphology of ISO-injured myocardium. The levels of G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), adenylate cyclase (AC), ßAR, and PKA proteins in myocardial tissue were significantly increased in the SMY group. In addition, the content of cAMP in myocardial tissue was increased, and the content of cAMP in serum was decreased. CONCLUSION: Based on the analysis of TCMIP, SMY treatment of HF may activate the GS-ßARcAMP- PKA signaling pathway. The findings provide a theoretical basis for further research on the anti-HF mechanism of SMY.

We investigated the anti-aging effects of velvet antler polypeptide on D-galactose (D-gal)-induced aging mice. D-gal-induced aging mice were established and randomly divided into five groups, the control, model, vitamin E (VE), velvet antler polypeptide low-dose and velvet antler polypeptide high-dose groups. The Morris water maze test was used to evaluate the learning and memory abilities of aging mice. Hippocampal neurons were observed via hematoxylin-eosin staining and transmission electron microscopy. Biochemical methods were used to detect the activities of superoxide dismutase, malonaldehyde and other enzymes and evaluate the influence of velvet antler polypeptide on the antioxidant capacity of aging mice. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and meristem technology, we assessed the effect of velvet antler polypeptide on aging mice's intestinal flora and fatty acid metabolism. The experimental results showed that velvet antler polypeptide could significantly improve aging mice's learning and cognitive abilities, increase the activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase in the serum decrease the malonaldehyde content. Intestinal microecological analysis showed that velvet antler polypeptide could significantly increase the beneficial bacterial genus Lactobacillus abundance. Western blot analysis further demonstrated that velvet antler polypeptide could promote fatty acid metabolism by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) and upregulating the expression of the downstream enzymes carnitine-palmitoyl transferase-1 A and acyl-CoA oxidase 1 while downregulating that of apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4), thereby reducing fatty acid accumulation and increasing adenosine-triphosphate (ATP) production. Therefore, velvet antler polypeptide improves the intestinal microecology and activates the PPARα/APOE4 pathway to regulate fatty acid metabolism.

In diabetes-induced complications, inflammatory-mediated endothelial dysfunction is the core of disease progression. Evidence shows that kakonein, an isoflavone common in Pueraria, can effectively treat diabetes and its complications. Therefore, we explored whether kakonein protects cardiovascular endothelial function by inhibiting inflammatory responses. In this study, C57BL/6J mice were injected with streptozocin to establish a diabetes model and treated with kakonein or metformin for 7 days. The protective effect of kakonein on cardiovascular endothelial junctions and NLRP3 inflammasome activation was verified through immunofluorescence and ELISA assay. In addition, the regulation of autophagy on the NLRP3 inflammasome was investigated through Western blot, immunofluorescence and RT-qPCR. Results showed that kakonein restored the function of endothelial junctions and inhibited the assembly and activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. Interestingly, kakonein decreased the expression of NLRP3 inflammasome protein by not reducing the transcriptional levels of NLRP3 and caspase-1. Kakonein activated autophagy in an AMPK-dependent manner, which reduced the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. In addition, kakonein inhibited both hyperglycaemia-induced cardiovascular endothelial junction dysfunction and NLRP3 inflammasome activation, similar to autophagy agonist. Our findings indicated that kakonein exerts a protective effect on hyperglycaemia-induced chronic vascular disease by regulating the NLRP3 inflammasome through autophagy.

ABSTRACT

Aging affects the brain function in elderly individuals, and Dushen Tang (DST) is widely used for the treatment of senile diseases. In this study, the protective effect of DST against memory impairment was evaluated through the Morris water maze (MWM) test and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A joint analysis was also performed using LC-MS metabolomics and the microbiome. The MWM test showed that DST could significantly improve the spatial memory and learning abilities of rats with memory impairment, and the TEM analysis showed that DST could reduce neuronal damage in the hippocampus of rats with memory impairment. Ten potential biomarkers involving pyruvate metabolism, the synthesis and degradation of ketone bodies, and other metabolic pathways were identified by the metabolomic analysis, and it was found that 3-hydroxybutyric acid and lactic acid were involved in the activation of cAMP signaling pathways. The 16S rDNA sequencing results showed that DST could regulate the structure of the gut microbiota in rats with memory impairment, and these effects were manifested as changes in energy metabolism. These findings suggest that DST exerts a good therapeutic effect on rats with memory impairment and that this effect might be mainly achieved by improving energy metabolism. These findings might lead to the potential development of DST as a drug for the treatment of rats with memory impairment.

ABSTRACT

Background: With the increasing incidence of mobile phone addiction, the potential risk factors of mobile phone addiction have attracted more and more researchers' attention. Although various personality trait factors have been proven to be significant predictors of mobile phone addiction, limited attention has been paid to preference for solitude. Considering the adverse impacts of preference for solitude in the context of collectivistic societies and its possible negative effect on mobile phone addiction, this study was designed to examine the relationship between preference for solitude and mobile phone addiction, and to test the mediating role of psychological distress and the moderating role of mindfulness in this relationship. Methods: Data were collected through convenience sampling from a comprehensive university in China. A total of 927 Chinese college students (371 males and 556 females), aged from 16 to 24 (M age = 19.89 years, SD = 1.22), participated in this study. Their preference for solitude, psychological distress, mindfulness, and mobile phone addiction were measured using well-validated self-report questionnaires. Results: Correlational analyses, sobel test, SPSS macro PROCESS (Model 8) and simple slopes analyses were used for major data analysis. Results showed that preference for solitude was significantly and positively associated with mobile phone addiction, and this link could be mediated by psychological distress. Moreover, the indirect effect of psychological distress in this link was moderated by mindfulness, with this effect being stronger for college students with lower levels of mindfulness. However, mindfulness can not moderate the direct relation between preference for solitude and mobile phone addiction. Conclusion: The present study broadened our knowledge of how and when (or for whom) preference for solitude is related to mobile phone addiction. Education professionals and parents should pay special attention to the psychological distress and mobile phone addiction of college students with high levels of preference for solitude, particularly for those with lower levels of mindfulness.

BACKGROUND: Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn stem (Hegeng [HG]) is a traditional Chinese medicine that is used to treat mental symptoms in East Asia. However, scientific evidence is generally lacking to support this traditional claim. Aim of the Study. This study's aim is to investigate the antidepression effect of HG and to further explore the possible molecular mechanisms that are involved in its actions. Materials and Methods. HG aqueous extract was administered intragastrically for 21 days after the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) procedure, and its effect on memory, learning, and emotion was assessed using animal behavioral tests. HG aqueous extract was characterized using HPLC. Immunofluorescence was used to measure the neural cell-adhesion molecule (NCAM) and growth-associated protein-43 (GAP-43) expression. RESULTS: Depression-like behaviors increased in the CUMS group compared with the control (CON) group, while they were reduced in the high-dose HG (H-HG) and fluoxetine (FLU) groups (p < 0.05). Additionally, NCAM and GAP-43 expression was reduced in the CUMS group compared with the CON group, but it increased in the H-HG and FLU groups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These findings show the potential antidepressant effects of HG through mechanisms involving regulation of NCAM and GAP-43. This provides a new theoretical basis for its potential application as an antidepressant-like agent.

Concentrations of potentially toxic metals including Cd, Cu, Pb, Cr, U, Th in surface water and sediment samples collected from a river were analyzed to assess the contaminations, distribution characteristics, and sources of these metals. The contents of the metals were lower than the standard levels set by World Health Organization (WHO) for drinking water. However, U and Th contents were far beyond the background values of surface water. The concentrations of Cd, Cr, and U in sediments were higher than the background values and the Probable Effect Level (PEL) of sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) which may result in high potential harmful biological effects to aquatic ecosystems. Based on the contamination factor (CF), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), and potential ecological risk index (RI), Cd, Cr, and U were considered to be the metals that mainly contribute to the contamination of sediments. The calculation results also indicated that the sites adjacent to the uranium ore field were highly polluted. Results of cluster analysis, principal component analysis, and correlation analysis revealed that Cr, Pb, U, and Th were highly correlated with each other. These metals mainly originated from both anthropogenic sources and natural processes, especially emissions from uranium mining and quarrying, whereas Cd mostly came from anthropogenic sources (agricultural activities) of the upper reaches of the river.

Uranium (U) mining activities, which lead to contamination in soils and waters (i.e., leachate from U mill tailings), cause serious environmental problems. However, limited research works have been conducted on U pollution associated with a whole soil-water system. In this study, a total of 110 samples including 96 solid and 14 water samples were collected to investigate the characteristics of U distribution in a natural soil-water system near a U mining tailings pond. Results showed that U concentrations ranged from 0.09 ± 0.02 mg/kg to 2.56 × 104± 23 mg/kg in solid samples, and varied greatly in different locations. For tailings sand samples, the highest U concentration (2.56× 104 ± 23 mg/kg) occurred at the depth of 80 cm underground, whereas, for paddy soil samples, the highest U concentration (5.22 ± 0.04 mg/kg) was found at surface layers. Geo-accumulation index and potential ecological hazard index were calculated to assess the hazard of U in the soils. The calculation results showed that half of the soil sampling sites were moderately polluted. For groundwater samples, U concentrations ranged from 0.55 ± 0.04 mg/L to 3.36 ± 0.02 mg/L with a mean value of 2.36 ± 0.36 mg/L, which was significantly lower than that of percolating waters (ranging from 4.56 ± 0.02 mg/L to 12.05 ± 0.04 mg/L, mean 7.91 ± 0.98 mg/L). The results of this study suggest that the distribution of U concentrations in a soil-water system was closely associated with hydrological cycles and U concentrations decreased with circulation path.

ABSTRACT

Glycemic variability (GV) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of vascular complications associated with diabetes mellitus (DM). Paeoniflorin is an effective Chinese traditional medicine with anti-inflammatory and immune-regulatory effects. Previous studies implicated the beneficial effects of paeoniflorin in treatment for diabetic complications, such as type 2 diabetic nephropathy and diabetes with myocardial ischemic injury. Current evidence suggests that oxidative stress and platelet activation, as well as their interaction, are potentially associated with GV and involved in the pathogenesis of diabetes-associated vascular complications. This study aimed to explore the effects of paeoniflorin on oxidative stress and platelet activation, using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) cultured with different glucose concentrations, and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats fed different glycemic index diets. Paeoniflorin treatment effectively improved the morphology and cell viability of HUVECs under glucose fluctuation. Moreover, the platelet aggregation rate, CD62p expression, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) concentration decreased, while glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) levels increased in paeoniflorin-treated groups. In conclusion, our study found that paeoniflorin ameliorates oxidative stress and platelet activation induced by glycemic variability both in vivo and in vitro, suggesting a novel potential strategy for treatment of diabetic complications.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Both doctors' and patients' opinions are important in the process of treatment and healthcare of Chinese medicine. This study is to compare patients' and doctors' treatment satisfaction over the course of two visits in a Chinese medicine outpatient setting, and to explain their respective views. METHODS: Patients' chief complaints were collected prior to the outpatient encounter. The doctor was then asked (through a questionnaire) to state what complaints he or she was prioritizing during the process of diagnosing disease and making a prescription for herbal medicine or acupuncture treatment. On the next visit, both the patient and the doctor completed a questionnaire assessing satisfaction with the treatment of Chinese medicine prescribed in the first visit and administered by the patient at home. A 5-point Likert scales was used to assess the patients' and doctors' satisfaction with treatment. The timing of the follow-up appointment was determined by the doctor. One chief specialist, one associate chief specialist and one attending practitioner in Chinese medicine, and 60 patients having a follow-up appointment with one of the doctors, participated in the study. RESULTS: For 11 patients, their most urgent complaint was different from what the doctor's choose to focus on in his or her treatment. And only one patient refused to comply due to his or her dissatisfaction with the treatment focus of the doctor. Overall, 59 patients completed the satisfaction assessment, and 53 patients visited their doctors for a follow-up appointment. Patients' total satisfaction was higher than their doctors' (mean 3.55 vs. 3.45), and correlation of patients' and doctors' treatment satisfaction was moderate (r = 0.63, P < 0.01). Both of the patients' and doctors' satisfaction ratings were correlated with treatment adherence (P < 0.001). The predictors of their treatment satisfaction were different. Doctors' satisfaction with treatment was a significant factor in the process of making further clinical decisions. CONCLUSION: Patients and doctors form their opinion about the treatment effects in different ways. When evaluating treatment satisfaction, doctor's opinions are also an important indicator of positive or negative clinical effects and affect the subsequent decisions-making.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy is effective for post-stroke depression (PSD). TCM therapy encompasses various forms of practices. However, the comparative effectiveness of these therapies is still not clear. Here, we provide a network meta-analysis protocol to compare the effects of different types of TCM therapy on PSD, using both direct and indirect evidence. METHODS: Twelve databases investigation will be conducted through the keywords from their inception to June 1, 2019. At least 2 independent reviewers will identify eligible articles. EndNote X7 software is utilized to manage the literatures and RevMan V.5.3 (The Cochrane Collaboration) software is for data processing throughout the review. The package "netmeta" (version 0.5-0) in R (version 3.0.2, The R Foundation for Statistical Computing) will be used to perform network meta-analysis (NMA). In addition, the overall quality of evidence is evaluated by GRADEPro software, and Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias Tool is employed for the methodological quality. Generally speaking, this review protocol is reported according to the preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis protocols 2015 guidelines. RESULTS: According to this protocol, it will provide evidence in support of, or against, the hypothesis that TCM therapy for PSD is more effective than pharmacotherapy. The results of this study will also provide evidence on relative efficacy of different forms of TCM. Furthermore, this analysis will show which form(s) of TCM therapy is (are) the most effective. CONCLUSION: The results will help PSD doctors and patients choose the treatment regimen which is effective, time-saving and economical. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: CRD42016041594.

ABSTRACT

Based on the stealth behavior of castor oil and poly(ethylene glycol), we selected a polyurethane system to obtain an ideal surgical adhesive. The polyurethane adhesives with varying concentrations of castor oil were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, goniometer, and universal testing machine. Curing results show that a 7-min to 25-min room temperature curing can be achieved, providing one possibility of shortening the surgery time. In vitro biodegradation test demonstrates that a certain proportion of the polyurethane film will be hydrolyzed in a foregone manner after a period of time (7 weeks). The adhesion strengths of these adhesives show a strong bonding between pieces of tissue, which makes them qualified for application in a moist environment.
