ABSTRACT

The concept of traditional Chinese medicine has different connotations and extensions in different historical periods. This paper examines the formation and development of the concept of traditional Chinese medicine in the perspective of history, theory and empirical research, and explores the internal connection among different medical systems and between medicine and other disciplines. It attempts to re-define the connotation and extension of the concept of traditional Chinese medicine in the context of the new era, provide references for building the medical community of the Chinese nation and promote the standardization of Chinese medicine terminology, advance the cross-disciplinary construction and establishing a new medical system with the characteristics of openness and tolerance, in order to provide the solution, wisdom and power of traditional Chinese medicine for global health in the process of building a community of human health.

ABSTRACT

Actinidia macrosperma is a medicinal plant in China and has been well known for its attraction to cats and activities against leprosy and cancers. The compositions and the antimicrobial activity of its leaf oil were reported for the first time. The oil obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC and GC-MS, was characterized by the high content of monoterpenes. Linalool (48.14%) is the major component identified, followed by 1,2-dimethyl-lindoline (7.94%), linolenic acid methylester (6.57%) and (E)-phytol (5.29%). The antimicrobial activity of the oil was evaluated against four bacterial and three fungal species. The results showed that it exhibited a mild antibacterial activity against two Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis), a significant activity against Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli), and no activity on Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The test fungi were more sensitive to the oil, with a MIC range of 0.78-1.56 microL mL(-1) than bacteria in the range which were significantly higher from 0.78 to 25.50 microL mL(-1).

ABSTRACT

AIM: To study the triterpenoid saponins in the Chinese traditional medicine Eclipta prostrata L.. METHODS: Column chromatography with silica gel and HPLC were employed for the isolation and purification. The molecular structures were determined on the basis of spectral analysis (IR, MS, 1HNMR, 13CNMR, HMQC and HMBC). RESULTS: Two new triterpenoid saponins, named eclalbasaponins XI (4) and XII (5), were obtained and their structures were elucidated as 3-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl(1-->2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl]-16 alpha-ethoxy-olean-12-ene-28-oic acid-28-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside and 3-O-[(2-O-sulfuryl-beta-D-glucopyranosyl) (1-->2)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl]-echinocystic acid-28-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, respectively, along with three known saponins, eclalbasaponins II (1), I (2) and III (3). CONCLUSION: Compounds 4 and 5 are new compounds, 1 and 5 induced morphological deformation of Pyricularia oryzae mycelia.
