ABSTRACT

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Marsdenia Tenacissima (Roxb.) Wight et Arn. is a traditional Chinese medicine. Its standardized extract (MTE), with the trade name Xiao-Ai-Ping injection, is widely used for cancer treatment. The pharmacological effects of MTE-inducing cancer cell death have been primarily explored. However, whether MTE triggers tumor endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS)-associated immunogenic cell death (ICD) is unknown. AIM OF THE STUDY: To determine the potential role of endoplasmic reticulum stress in the anti-cancer effects of MTE, and uncover the possible mechanisms of endoplasmic reticulum stress-associated immunogenic cell death induced by MTE. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The anti-tumor effects of MTE on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) were examined through CCK-8 and wound healing assay. Network pharmacology analysis and RNA-sequencing (RNA seq) were performed to confirm the biological changes of NSCLCs after MTE treatment. Western blot, qRT-PCR, reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay, and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) assay were used to explore the occurrence of endoplasmic reticulum stress. Immunogenic cell death-related markers were tested by ELISA and ATP release assay. Salubrinal was used to inhibit the endoplasmic reticulum stress response. SiRNA and bemcentinib (R428) were used to impede the function of AXL. AXL phosphorylation was regained by recombinant human Gas6 protein (rhGas6). The effects of MTE on endoplasmic reticulum stress and immunogenic cell death response were also proved in vivo. The AXL inhibiting compound in MTE was explored by molecular docking and confirmed by Western blot. RESULTS: MTE inhibited cell viability and migration of PC-9 and H1975 cells. Enrichment analysis identified that differential genes after MTE treatment were significantly enriched in endoplasmic reticulum stress-related biological processes. MTE decreased mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and increased ROS production. Meanwhile, endoplasmic reticulum stress-related proteins (ATF6, GRP-78, ATF4, XBP1s, and CHOP) and immunogenic cell death-related markers (ATP, HMGB1) were upregulated, and the AXL phosphorylation level was suppressed after MTE treatment. However, when salubrinal (an endoplasmic reticulum stress inhibitor) and MTE were co-treated cells, the inhibitory effects of MTE on PC-9 and H1975 cells were impaired. Importantly, inhibition of AXL expression or activity also promotes the expression of endoplasmic reticulum stress and immunogenic cell death-related markers. Mechanistically, MTE induced endoplasmic reticulum stress and immunogenic cell death by suppressing AXL activity, and these effects were attenuated when AXL activity recovered. Moreover, MTE significantly increased the expression of endoplasmic reticulum stress-related markers in LLC tumor-bearing mouse tumor tissues and plasma levels of ATP and HMGB1. Molecular docking illustrated that kaempferol has the strongest binding energy with AXL and suppresses AXL phosphorylation. CONCLUSION: MTE induces endoplasmic reticulum stress-associated immunogenic cell death in NSCLC cells. The anti-tumor effects of MTE are dependent upon endoplasmic reticulum stress. MTE triggers endoplasmic reticulum stress-associated immunogenic cell death by inhibiting AXL activity. Kaempferol is an active component that inhibits AXL activity in MTE. The present research revealed the role of AXL in regulating endoplasmic reticulum stress and enriched the anti-tumor mechanisms of MTE. Moreover, kaempferol may be considered a novel AXL inhibitor.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to explore the medication rule of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) for heart failure after myocardial infarction via data mining. To be specific, articles on the treatment of the disease with Chinese medicine were retrieved from CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, and SinoMed and related information was collected. A database was created with Microsoft Excel 2019, and SPSS Clementine 12.0 and IBM SPSS Statistics 23.0 were applied for association rules analysis, cluster analysis, and factor analysis. Finally, a total of 81 TCM prescriptions were screened out, involving 91 medicinals with cumulative use frequency of 740. The main syndromes were Qi deficiency and blood stasis, Yang Qi deficiency and blood stasis together with retained morbid fluid, deficiency of both Qi and Yin and blood stasis. The medicinals with high-frequency were Astragali Radix, Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Poria, and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata. The effects of the medicinals were tonifying deficiency, activating blood and resolving stasis, and promoting urination and draining dampness. The association rules analysis yielded "Astragali Radix-Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma" "Astragali Radix-Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata-Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma" "Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata-Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma-Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma-Astragali Radix" combinations. Cluster analysis yielded 6 basic formulas for heart failure after myocardial infarction. Factor analysis extracted a total of 8 common factors. Heart failure after myocardial infarction is characterized by the syndrome of deficiency in nature and excess in superficiality. The core pathogenesis is "deficiency" "stasis" "retained morbid fluid", particularly "deficiency". This disease is closely related to the heart, lung, and spleen. The basic treatment principle is replenishing Qi and activating blood, and warming Yang, excreting water, and nourishing yin should also be emphasized. The common basic prescriptions, such as Siwu Decoction, Shengmai Powder, Xuefu Zhuyu Decoction, Linggui Zhugan Decoction, and Shenfu Decoction, have been discovered. This study provided data for clinical medication and drug development for heart failure after myocardial infarction.

ABSTRACT

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive breast cancer subtype with limited treatment options and a poor prognosis. TNBC exists widely reprogrammed lipid metabolism, and its metabolic-associated proteins and oncometabolites are promising as potential therapeutic targets. Dandelion (Taraxacum mongolicum) is a classical herbal medicine used to treat breast diseases based on traditional Chinese medicine theory and was reported to have antitumor effects and lipid regulatory capacities. Our previous study showed that dandelion extract was effective against TNBC. However, whether dandelion extract could regulate the lipid metabolisms of TNBC and exert its antitumor effects via interfering with lipids metabolism remained unclear. In this study, an integrated approach combined with network pharmacology and multi-omics techniques (including proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics) was performed to investigate the potential regulatory mechanisms of dandelion extract against TNBC. We first determined the antitumor effects of dandelion extract in vitro and in vivo. Then, network pharmacology analysis speculated the antitumor effects involving various metabolic processes, and the multi-omics results of the cells, tumor tissues, and plasma revealed the changes in the metabolites and metabolic-associated proteins after dandelion extract treatment. The alteration of glycerophospholipids and unsaturated fatty acids were the most remarkable types of metabolites. Therefore, the metabolism of glycerophospholipids and unsaturated fatty acids, and their corresponding proteins CHKA and FADS2, were considered the primary regulatory pathways and biomarkers of dandelion extract against TNBC. Subsequently, experimental validation showed that dandelion extract decreased CHKA expression, leading to the inhibition of the PI3K/AKT pathway and its downstream targets, SREBP and FADS2. Finally, the molecular docking simulation suggested that picrasinoside F and luteolin in dandelion extract had the most highly binding scores with CHKA, indicating they may be the potential CHKA inhibitors to regulate glycerophospholipids metabolisms of TNBC. In conclusion, we confirmed the antitumor effects of dandelion extract against TNBC cells in vitro and demonstrated that dandelion extract could interfere with glycerophospholipids and unsaturated fatty acids metabolism via downregulating the CHKA expression and inhibiting PI3K/AKT/SREBP/FADS2 axis.

ABSTRACT

In reference with the systematic review of the thought of deqi (arrival of qi) put forward in Huangdi Neijing (Internal Classic of Yellow Emperor) and other classic books of traditional Chinese medicine, in view of detecting qi and identifying qi before treatment, as well as the prerequisites of deqi in tuina, meaning the accurate syndrome differentiation and manipulations, the importance of deqi in treatment with tuina is expounded. In association with clinical experience, the specific manifestations of deqi in patients during tuina are summarized, e.g. soreness, distention, pain, numbness, warm feeling and slight sweating, local changes in intestinal sound and skin color, as well as mind regulation. It is anticipated that deqi of tuina may be drawn the attention in clinical practice, and the relevant study be expanded.

ABSTRACT

Chinese patent medicine prescriptions containing Jujubea Fructus in 2015 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia and the Composition Principles of Chinese Patent Drug were collected, and the characteristics of Chinese patent medicine containing Jujubea Fructus were analyzed by using data mining technology. Statistical software Excel 2019, Clementine 12.0 and SPSS 21.0 were used to conduct statistical analysis of conforming Chinese patent medicine prescriptions by means of frequency statistics, association rule analysis and cluster analysis. Finally, a total of 185 Chinese patent medicine prescriptions containing Jujubea Fructus were included in this study, involving 402 Chinese medicines and 28 kinds of high frequency Chinese medicines, with Jujubea Fructus, Poria, Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, and Codonopsis Radix as the top five. The deficiency-nourishing drugs were in the most common efficacy classification, mainly sweet, bitter and pungent, with most medicine properties of warm and gentle, main meridians of spleen lung and stomach, dosage forms of pills, granules and tablets, and main indications of splenic diseases. Fifteen drug combinations were obtained in association rule analysis. Eleven drug combinations were obtained by association rule analysis of Chinese patent medicine containing Jujubea Fructus in the treatment of splenic diseases, and the drugs were divided into two categories by cluster analysis. According to the above analysis, it is found that the Chinese patent medicine prescriptions containing Jujubea Fructus are mainly composed of deficiency-nourishing drugs, mostly compatible with drugs of sweet, bitter and pungent flavors, warm and gentle properties, and spleen, lung, and stomach meridians in the treatment of splenic diseases, with Sijunzi Decoction as the main drug. This study provides guidance for modern clinical application and development of Jujubea Fructus.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a clinical syndrome characterized by diastolic dysfunction. Despite the increasing incidence of HFpEF, there is no available therapy that reduces the mortality rate of HFpEF. Zhigancao Tang has been used traditionally for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases in China. The use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is associated with improvements in clinical syndromes and quality of life of patients. A randomized clinical trial should be conducted to provide clear evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of Zhigancao Tang granules for the treatment of HFpEF. METHODS: A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial was proposed. A total of 122 patients with HFpEF will be randomly assigned to receive Zhigancao Tang granules or placebo for 12 weeks. The primary outcome measure is cardiac function. The secondary outcomes include measurement of the integral TCM syndrome score, echocardiography, 6-min walk test, N-terminal-pro hormone B-type natriuretic peptide level, atrial natriuretic peptide level, Minnesota Living with Heart Failure scale, and Lee's scale. The outcome measures will be evaluated at baseline, 4 weeks, and 12 weeks. Adverse events will be evaluated from baseline till the 12-week follow-up period. DISCUSSION: The results of this trial will demonstrate whether Zhigancao Tang granules are effective and safe for treating HFpEF. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04317339 . ABSTRACT

Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy of acupuncture plus MOTOmed intelligent motor training in treating children with spastic cerebral palsy, and analyze the effects on lower limb motor function, intelligence development level, immune function and cerebral hemodynamics.Methods: A total of 42 children with spastic cerebral palsy were selected as the observation objects, and enrolled into the observation group. Another 42 cases treated in the same period were selected as the control group. Both groups received MOTOmed intelligent motor training, and the observation group was given additional acupuncture therapy, and the control group was given additional conventional rehabilitation treatment. After 2 consecutive treatment courses, the psychomotor development index (PDI) and mental development index (MDI) of Children's Developmental Center of China (CDCC) scale, the scores of gross motor function measure (GMFM) scale and modified Ashworth scale (MAS), and the changes in CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ and CD4+/CD8+ were observed. The peak systolic velocity (PSV) and mean flow velocity (MFV) of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA), middle cerebral artery (MCA) and posterior cerebral artery (PCA) were observed and measured. The clinical efficacy was evaluated. Results: Compared with the same group before treatment, the scores of GMFM, PDI and MDI, levels of CD3+, CD4+ and CD4+/CD8+, PSV and MFV levels of ACA, MCA and PCA in both groups were significantly increased after treatment (all P<0.05), while the CD8+ level had no significant change (both P>0.05). After treatment, the total effective rate of lower limb spasm in the observation group was 90.5%, significantly higher than 71.4% in the control group (P<0.05). The scores of GMFM, PDI and MDI, the levels of CD3+ and CD4+, PSV and MFV, and the levels of ACA, MCA and PCA in the observation group were all significantly higher than those in the control group (all P<0.05). There were no significant differences in the CD8+ level and CD4+/CD8+ between the groups (all P>0.05). Conclusion: Acupuncture plus MOTOmed intelligent motor training has a better clinical efficacy than conventional rehabilitation plus MOTOmed intelligent motor training in treating children with spastic cerebral palsy, and is also superior in improving lower limb motor function and the level of intellectual development. And the mechanism may be related to the improvement of cerebral hemodynamics.

ABSTRACT

The high shear wet granulation(HSWG) process of Chinese medicine has a complicated mechanism. There are many influencing factors that contribute to this process. In order to summarize the manufacturability of different kinds of materials in HSWG, this paper constructed a material library composed of 11 materials, including 4 Chinese medicine extracts and 7 pharmaceutical excipients. Each material was described by 22 physical parameters. Several binders were employed, and their density, viscosity and surface tension were characterized. Combining empirical constraints and the principle of randomization, 21 designed experiments and 8 verification experiments were arranged. The partial least squares(PLS) algorithm was used to establish a process model in prediction of the median granule size based on properties of raw materials and binders, and process parameters. The surface tension and density of binders, as well as the maximum pore saturation were identified as key variables. In the latent variable space of the HSWG process model, all materials could be divided into three categories, namely the Chinese medicine extracts, the diluents and the disintegrants. The granulation of Chinese medicine extracts required low viscosity and low amount of binder, and the resulted granule sizes were small. The diluent powders occupied a large physical space, and could be made into granules with different granule sizes by adjusting the properties of binders. The disintegrants tended to be made into large granules under the condition of aqueous binder. The combination use of material database and multivariate modeling method is conducive to innovate the knowledge discovery of the wet granulation process of Chinese medicine, and provides a basis for the formulation and process design based on material attributes.

ABSTRACT

Objective:This study aims to investigate the clinical effect of addition and subtraction therapy of Zhibai Dihuangwan combined with Wulingsan in the treatment of refractory nephrotic syndrome (RNS) with Yin deficiency of liver and kidney and its regulatory effect on immune inflammatory response. Method:In this study, 108 children were randomly divided into observation group (54 cases) and control group (54 cases). Patients in two groups were treated with prednisone acetate tablets combined with tacrolimus capsules . Patients in control group took Liuwei Dihuang oral liquid, 5-10 mL/time, twice a day. Patients in control group were prescribed the addition and subtraction therapy of Zhibai Dihuangwan combined with Wulingsan, 1 dose/day. The course of treatment for both groups was 6 months. The 24 h urine total protein (24 h-UTP), serum albumin (ALB), serum creatinine (Scr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL), liver and kidney Yin deficiency syndrome score, fibrinogen (FIB), <italic>D</italic>-dimer (<italic>D</italic>-D), prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) were compared before and after treatment. Also, tumor necrosis factor-<italic>α</italic> (TNF- <italic>α</italic>), interleukin-6(IL-6), IL-10, IL-17, CD4<sup>+</sup> and CD8<sup>+</sup>, helper T lymphocytes17 (Th17), regulatory T cell (Treg) were detected before and after treatment, and CD4<sup>+</sup>/CD8<sup>+ </sup>and<sup> </sup>Th17/Treg were also calculated. Result:The levels of 24 h-UTP, TC, TG, LDL, FIB, <italic>D</italic>-D, TNF-<italic>α</italic>, IL-10, IL-6 and IL-17 in observation group were all lower than those in control group (<italic>P</italic><0.01), and the levels of CD8<sup>+</sup>, Th17 and Th17/Treg were alsolower than those in control group (<italic>P</italic><0.05). While the levels of HDL,ALB, CD4<sup>+</sup>, Treg and CD4<sup>+</sup>/CD8<sup>+</sup> in observation group were higher than those in control group (<italic>P</italic><0.05). The comprehensive efficacy in observation group was better than that in control group (<italic>Z</italic>=2.02, <italic>P</italic><0.05), and the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome efficacy of observation group was better than that of control group (<italic>Z</italic>=2.10, <italic>P</italic><0.05). Conclusion:Based on the treatment of hormone combined with Tacrolimus, Zhibai Dihuangwan combined with Wulingsan can reduce urinary protein, improve lipid metabolism disorder and hypercoagulability, and regulate immune inflammatory reaction in patients with RNS and Yin deficiency of liver and kidney, with remarkable comprehensive effect and TCM syndrome effect.

ABSTRACT

With the continuous improvement of treatment ability in intensive care unit (ICU), many critically ill and complex patients have survived due to the development of technology. However, most of them suffer from the psychological and physiological problems of post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). Therefore, the early identification and prevention of PICS is particularly critical. We should understand the pathophysiological mechanism of PICS, strictly implement ABCDEFG bundle management measures [including airway management (A), breath (B), reasonable analgesia and sedation treatment (C), prevention of delirium (D), early rehabilitation (E), family engagement (F), good communication (G)] during ICU hospitalization, and pay attention to reasonable nutritional support, optimizing blood glucose management, providing positive psychological intervention and support to patients through family members' encouragement and accompanying, ICU diary and other forms, following up the health status of patients transferred out/discharged from ICU, providing multi-disciplinary and professional continuing medical services, finding the entry point and timing of traditional Chinese medicine intervention, and giving full play to the advantages of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment, which can improve the quality of life of patients. This article reviews the pathophysiological mechanism, risk factors, prevention and management measures, traditional Chinese medicine syndrome differentiation and treatment of PICS, in order to improve the early identification, diagnosis and treatment of critical patients with PICS, and improve the prognosis of patients.

ABSTRACT

This article aims to provide a good experimental method for the study of drug treatment of ulcerative colitis. According to the characteristics of ulcerative colitis's clinical symptoms, common ulcerative colitis animal models were analyzed. Based on the characteristics of clinical symptoms of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine for ulcerative colitis disease, the existing commonly used animal models of ulcerative colitis were analyzed to summarize the current matching degree, advantages and disadvantages of the exi-sting animal models of ulcerative colitis and clinical symptoms. At present, studies on ulcerative colitis mainly adopt four types of induction modeling methods, such as immunization, chemical stimulation, compound method and gene model. There are many reported methods of colitis modeling, but no model can reflect the characteristics of clinical symptoms of ulcerative colitis treated with Western or Chinese medicine. This article summarizes the characteristics, clinically relevant symptoms and applicable scope of immunization, chemical stimulation, compound method, and gene model, so as to provide a reliable animal model for subsequent studies of prevention and treatment of colitis.

Uranium contamination in the environment is a serious public health concern. Biotic U(VI) reduction and nonreductive U(VI) uptake by microorganisms (e.g., U(VI) biosorption by cyanobacteria) are effective U remediation techniques. Variations of 238U/235U have been extensively explored to track biotic U(VI) reduction in laboratory experiments and field applications. However, U isotope fractionation during nonreductive U(VI) uptake by microorganisms is poorly constrained. To investigate U isotope fractionation in this process, we cultured freshwater plankton in the presence of U(VI) and measured 238U/235U in the culture media and biomass. We found that nonreductive U(VI) uptake by freshwater plankton fractionated U isotopes in the opposite direction compared to biotic U(VI) reduction. δ238U values in freshwater plankton were consistently ∼0.23 ± 0.06‰ lighter than those in dissolved U in the culture medium at various fractions of U removal (12-30%), consistent with equilibrium isotope fractionation in a closed system. The equilibrium isotope fractionation observed in our experiments possibly results from changes in coordination geometry between dissolved U(VI) in the culture media and adsorbed U(VI) on cell surfaces. Our experimental results highlight the need to consider U isotope fractionation during nonredox U(VI) uptake by microorganisms and organic matter when applying variations of 238U/235U to track biogeochemical processes and evaluate U remediation.

Public health crises, such as the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) since Dec. 2019, are widely acknowledged as severe traumatic events that impose threats not only because of physical concerns but also because of the psychological distress of infected patients. We designed an internet-based integrated intervention and evaluated its efficacy on depression and anxiety symptoms in patients infected by SARS-CoV-2.

ABSTRACT

Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1), a retinoic acid (RA) synthase, is selectively expressed by the nigrostriatal dopaminergic (nDA) neurons that preferentially degenerate in Parkinson's disease (PD). ALDH1A1-positive axons mainly project to the dorsal striatum. However, whether ALDH1A1 and its products regulate the activity of postsynaptic striatal neurons is unclear. Here we show that µ-type opioid receptor (MOR1) levels were severely decreased in the dorsal striatum of postnatal and adult Aldh1a1 knockout mice, whereas dietary supplement of RA restores its expression. Furthermore, RA treatment also upregulates striatal MOR1 levels and signaling and alleviates L-DOPA-induced dyskinetic movements in pituitary homeobox 3 (Pitx3)-deficient mice that lack of ALDH1A1-expressing nDA neurons. Therefore, our findings demonstrate that ALDH1A1-synthesized RA is required for postsynaptic MOR1 expression in the postnatal and adult dorsal striatum, supporting potential therapeutic benefits of RA supplementation in moderating L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chronic stable angina (CSA) resulted in a considerable burden for both individuals and the society. In this study we aimed to critically evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Compound salvia pellet compared with nitrates in the treatment of Chronic Stable Angina (CSA) pectoris, and to provide more credible evidence for clinical practice. METHODS: A comprehensive and exhaustive search strategy was formulated to identify potential RCTs of compound salvia pellet for CSA in international and Chinese databases from their inception to July 4th, 2018. We also searched the bibliographies of relevant studies. Two reviewers independently assessed the quality of included trials by using Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool. RESULTS: The literature search yielded 1849 citations and 51 RCTs (n = 4732) were included for meta-analysis after titles, abstracts and full text selection according to eligibility criteria. The pooled results suggested that compound salvia pellet was much more effective than nitrates in the improvement of angina symptoms (therapy = 4 weeks, RR = 1.23, 95%CI = [1.17, 1.30], P < .001, I = 0%; therapy = 4 weeks, RR = 1.13, 95%CI = [1.08, 1.17], P < .001, I = 45.6%), and ECG test (therapy = 4 weeks, RR = 1.24, 95%CI [1.14, 1.35], P < .001, I = 51.5%; and therapy > 4 weeks, RR = 1.30, 95%CI[1.20, 1.42], P < .001, I = 36.4%) in CSA. Compared with nitrates, the percentage of patients with adverse events significantly decreased when prescribed with compound salvia pellet (3.2% vs 17.0%). CONCLUSION: Compound salvia pellet might be more effective on the improvement of angina symptoms, ECG test and with few adverse events compared with nitrates. While there are some limitations in this study, which may weaken the results, we believe the findings could provide useful information for stakeholders concerned with outcomes in patients with CSA. More rigorous RCTs with high quality are needed to confirm these findings.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the contamination of aflatoxin B1 in traditional Chinese medicine decoction pieces.and to provide evidence for the development of sdandards and scientific management.Methods Immunoaffinity column and post-column photochemical derivatization were used to detect and quantify aflatoxin B1 in 35 traditional Chinese medicines.Results A total of 48.57%(17 out of 35 batches) traditional Chinese medicine were contained aflatoxin B1.The contents of aflatoxin B1 in all contaminated varieties were less than 1μg/kg,except for Sterculia lychnophorae Semen,Foeniculi Fructus,Corydalis Rhizoma,which exceeded the standard.Conclusions The tested traditional Chinese medicine are highly contaminated of aflatoxin,it is necessary to further study the increase of aflatoxin content under the examination of Chinese Pharmacopoeia Foeniculi Fructus and Corydalis Rhizoma to better control its quality.The degree of aflatoxin B1 pollution is reated to the site of drug use and the place of origin.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To compare the angiogenesis behaviors of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and Chinese medicine Xuefu Zhuyu Decoction (, XZD) treatments.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Human microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC-1) were treated with various concentrations of either XZD-containing serum (XZD-CS) or VEGF for 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively. Cell viability, proliferation, migration, adhesion, and in vitro tube formation assays were used to assess their angiogenic effects.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>VEGF promoted all cellular phases involved in angiogenesis including cell viability, proliferation, migration, adhesion, and tube formation (<0.05 or <0.01). Unlike the continuous promotion effects of VEGF at the above stages, XZD inhibited cell viability and proliferation (<0.05 or <0.01) and only promoted tube formation in the early phase of angiogenesis (<0.01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>These two medications promote different angiogenesis behaviors, which might be an important reason for their distinct therapeutic profile in clinical usage.</p>

@#Objective To compare the effect of impulse electroacupuncture (impulse-EA) and music electroacupuncture (music-EA) for Tongdu Qishen on spatial learning and memory, and expression of cytokine in the hippocampus of APP/PS1 mice. Methods A total of 32 APP/PS1 double transgenic male mice were randomly divided into model group (n=8), drug group (n=8), impulse-EA group (n=8) and music-EA group (n=8), the same background and age male C57BL/6 mice were observed as normal group (n=8). The impulse-EA group and music-EA group accepted EA at Baihui (GV20) and Yintang (GV29), connected with their own electroacupuncture stimulators, for 20 minuts, then, they were pricked Renzhong (GV26) for a while. The drug group accepted donepezil hydrochloride 0.92 mg/kg intra-gastrically. The normal group, model group and drug group were grabbed and bounded in the same way. After 15 days of treatment, they were assessed with Morris water maze. The expression of high mobility group box pro-tein-1 (HMGB1) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) in hippocampus were measured with immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. Results The escape latency shortened inEA groups compared with that of the model group since the fourth day of Morris water maze training (P<0.05), and it was the least in the music-EA group; and the ratio of swimming across the target quadrant increased (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between EA groups (P>0.05). The ex-pression of HMGB1 decreased (P<0.05) and the expression of IL-10 increased (P<0.05) in EA groups com-pared with that of the model group, and HMGB1 decreased more and IL-10 increased more in the music-EA group than in the impulse-EA group (P<0.05), according to the measurement in immunohistochemistry, not in Western blotting. Conclusion Both impulse-EA and music-EA based on Tongdu Qishen can promote the recovery of the learning and memory in APP/PS1 mice, and music-EA may do more effectively in inhibition of pro-inflammatory factors and promotion of the anti-inflammatory factors.
