ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major global health threat, particularly in China, contributing to over 40% of deaths. While sleep behaviors, sedentary behaviors, and physical activities are recognized as independent lifestyle risk factors for CVD, there remains limited understanding of specific movement behavior patterns and their CVD risks, especially considering sex-specific differences. This study examines movement behavior patterns among Chinese adults (40-75) and their associations with cardiovascular risk, with a focus on sleep, physical activity (PA), and sedentary behavior (SB). METHODS: Data pertaining to 13,465 male participants and 15,613 female participants, collected from the Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance Survey in Nanjing from February 2020 to December 2022. The latent class analysis method was employed to identify underlying movement patterns across sexes. Multinomial logistic regression models assessed CVD risk, and the China-PAR model calculated 10-year risk. RESULTS: Three male and four female movement patterns emerged. Active Movers (17.10% males, 5.93% females) adhered to PA recommendations but had poorer sleep quality. Moderate Achievers (61.42% males, 45.32% females) demonstrated moderate behavior. Sedentary Sleepers (21.48% males, 10.20% females) exhibited minimal PA but good sleep. Female Moderate Physical Activity (MPA) Dominant Movers demonstrated a prevalent adherence to recommended MPA levels. Active movers had the lowest CVD risk. After adjusting for potential confounders, moderate achievers (OR = 1.462, 95% CI 1.212, 1.764) and sedentary sleepers (OR = 1.504, 95% CI 1.211, 1.868) were both identified as being associated with a high-risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) compared to active movers in males, demonstrating a similar trend for intermediate risk. Such associations were not statistically significant among females. CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed sex-specific movement patterns associated with CVD risks among middle-aged Chinese adults. We suggest that adopting an active movement behavior pattern, characterized by meeting or exceeding recommended levels of vigorous physical activity (VPA) and reducing sedentary behavior, is beneficial for all middle-aged adults, particularly males. An active lifestyle could help counteract the adverse effects of relatively poor sleep quality on the risk of developing CVD in this population. Integrating sleep, PA, and SB information provides a holistic framework for understanding and mitigating CVD risks.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the differences between resting and active thalamic neurometabolite levels and inhibitory function in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) patients with poor sleep quality (PSQ was defined as Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index >5 and sleep efficiency ≤85%) compared to OCD patients with good sleep quality (GSQ) and healthy controls (HCs), as well as the relationship of these indices to obsessive compulsive symptoms. METHODS: Functional magnetic resonance spectroscopy (fMRS) was used to measure resting and active thalamic neurometabolite levels in 72 subjects (20 HCs and 38 OCD patients included in study analysis). Response inhibition function was measured by the Go-Nogo task before and during MRS recording. Subjective sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The symptoms of OCD, anxiety and depression were evaluated using relevant clinical scales. RESULTS: OCD patients exhibited significantly reduced Glx/Cr levels in the resting thalamus. The levels of resting thalamic Glu/Cr and Glx/Cr in OCD patients with PSQ were significantly lowest. OCD patients had significantly lower correct rates on Go tasks, higher error rates on Nogo tasks, and longer error average response times (EART) to the Nogo task. OCD patients with PSQ demonstrated the highest Nogo task error rate and the longest EART to Nogo task. Furthermore, PSQI scores exhibited negative correlations with Glu/Cr and Glx/Cr in the resting thalamus. CONCLUSION: OCD patients with PSQ demonstrated reduced levels of thalamic resting Glx and more pronounced response inhibitory function impairment. Aberrant neurometabolite levels in critical brain regions, coupled with heightened response inhibition function deficits, may be a neurobiological basis for the PSQ that OCD patients generally exhibit.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of progressive muscle relaxation exercises (PMRE) on sleep quality in patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment and experiencing disturbed sleep. METHODS: The prospective randomized controlled study was conducted between March and September 2022 with 69 patients (intervention group: 34 patients, control group: 35 patients) in a hospital chemotherapy unit. During the data collection process, the "Personal Information Form" and "Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)" were utilized. Patients in the intervention group performed PMRE twice a day for 8 weeks. Patients in the control group received routine care at the clinic without additional intervention. For data analysis, Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Fisher's exact test, and chi-square test were used. RESULTS: The sociodemographic attributes of patients within both the intervention and control groups exhibited comparability. However, notable distinctions emerged in the PSQI Global sleep score and PSQI subdimension scores, encompassing sleep latency and duration, subjective sleep quality, habitual sleep efficiency, sleep disturbance, and daytime dysfunction between the two groups. The study found a notable difference in scores between the patients in the intervention group and those in the control group. The patients who received the intervention had significantly lower scores (P < .001). CONCLUSION: The study revealed that PMRE was beneficial in improving sleep quality in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy who had poor sleep quality. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: Oncology nurses may consider using PMRE to improve the sleep quality of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

ABSTRACT

Cancer patients frequently encounter difficulties associated with suboptimal sleep quality. Bright Light Therapy (BLT), an innovative treatment approach, has shown promise in enhancing sleep quality. However, several literature reviews showed conflicting results, and more analysis should be conducted regarding detailed BLT settings on sleep. This meta-analysis was undertaken to comprehensively assess the impact of BLT on sleep quality among cancer patients. Twelve studies with 679 patients were included. Compared with the control group, BLT overall resulted in significant improvements in terms of sleep quality [g = -0.34], total sleep time [g = 0.24], wake after sleep onset [g = -0.80], and fatigue [g = -0.54]. However, it did not yield a statistically significant effect on sleep efficiency, sleep onset latency, and insomnia severity. Regarding light settings, interventions featuring light intensities >5000lux, intervention duration ≥4 weeks, spectral emission peak at 464∼465 nm, and using a lightbox demonstrated heightened efficacy in improving sleep. BLT may be considered a supplementary therapeutic option to improve sleep quality among cancer patients. However, more extensive and rigorous studies are necessary to determine the optimal timing of BLT delivery and its applicability to cancer patients across different age groups.

ABSTRACT

Background: Sleep disorders contribute to an increased risk of depression, cardiovascular issues, and various other diseases among older individuals. Consequently, enhancing the sleep quality of this demographic population has become a pressing concern. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of an 8-week Tai Chi exercise intervention in the sleep quality of older adults. Methods: Sixty individuals aged 60 years and above, recruited from the community around Southwest University in Beibei District, Chongqing City, were randomly assigned to either a control group (30 participants) or an intervention group (30 participants). The control group adhered to their normal daily routines during the 8-week experimental period, while the intervention group engaged in a 60-min Tai Chi practice three times a week for 8 weeks. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Additionally, the Polysomnographic Sleep Quality Monitoring System (PSG) was employed to monitor the sleep process before and after the Tai Chi intervention. Results: After the experiment, significant differences were observed in PSQI and IEI scores between the intervention and control groups (p < 0.05). In the experimental group, the pre-post comparisons revealed a significant increase in time spent in bed (p < 0.05), total sleep time (p < 0.05), and non-REM sleep stage 2 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The findings indicate that Tai Chi exercise may improve subjective reported sleep quality. In addition, Tai Chi exercise may alleviate general drowsiness, extend sleep duration, and optimize the sleep process and structure. Consequently, Tai Chi exercise may be a suitable exercise to improve sleep quality in older individuals.

ABSTRACT

Background: Abnormal psychological state and neurotransmitter levels are important factors affecting sleep quality. Numerous studies have shown that tuina can improve the symptoms of sleep disorders in patients with insomnia while relieving anxiety and depression and regulating neurotransmitter levels. However, there have been no meta-analyses on the effect of tuina on psychological states and neurotransmitter levels. Objectives: A meta-analysis was performed to systematically evaluate the effects of massage on sleep quality, psychological state, and neurotransmitter levels in patients with insomnia. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted from inception to July 2023 using eight electronic databases to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on tuina therapy for insomnia. Gray literature was also searched. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Handbook. Reviewer Manager 5.4 and Stata 16.0 were employed for statistical analysis. Results: A total of 23 studies were included, including 1780 patients with insomnia, of whom 892 and 888 were in the experimental and control groups, respectively. Meta-analysis indicated that tuina therapy was superior to other therapies for the treatment of insomnia in increasing the total effective rate [OR = 4.12, 95%CI (2.80, 6.06), p < 0.00001] and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) level [MD = 16.03, 95% CI (13.40, 18.65), p < 0.00001], while reducing the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score [MD = -2.34, 95% CI (-2.94, -1.74), p < 0.00001], Athens Insomnia Scale score [MD = -2.10, 95% CI (-2.67, -1.52), p < 0.00001], self-rating anxiety scale score [MD = -6.77, 95% CI (-8.34, -5.20), p < 0.00001] and self-rating depression scale score [MD = -6.60, 95% CI (-8.82, -4.37), p < 0.00001]. Subgroup analysis showed that tuina alone or in combination with other therapies was superior to drugs or acupuncture alone in improving all outcomes (p < 0.05). Only two studies reported minor adverse events. Conclusion: Tuina for insomnia has certain therapeutic advantages and can significantly improve sleep quality, relieve anxiety-depressive states, and increase 5-HT levels with high safety. Due to the limitations of the quality of the included studies, additional high-quality clinical trials are required for further verification. BACKGROUND & AIMS: Sleep disturbances are widespread in modern societies and linked to a variety of diseases, creating an urgent need for the development of products that help combat sleep difficulties. One suitable nutritional supplement may be a fish hydrolysate composed of low molecular weight peptides. METHODS: This two-arm, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study investigated the effect of a 4-week fish hydrolysate intervention on sleep in a healthy German population reporting poor sleep quality, assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Further sleep parameters were measured using an online diary and a wrist wearable device. Additionally, questionnaires related to stress, anxiety, depression, and well-being were evaluated and salivary cortisol and product satisfaction were assessed. RESULTS: The 4-week fish hydrolysate supplementation significantly improved subjective sleep quality measured with the PSQI-score (p = .002). Moreover, individuals reported improvements in sleep efficacy and a reduction in sleep disturbances and daytime sleepiness during fish hydrolysate intake (p = .013, p = .046, p = .004 respectively), but not during placebo phase (all p > .05). No significant intra-individual differences were found between fish hydrolysate and placebo supplementation (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS: Although no significant intra-individual differences were found between fish hydrolysate and placebo supplementation, the significant improvement in subjective sleep quality from baseline to treatment phase suggests that fish hydrolysate is a safe nutritional supplement to support individuals with self-reported sleep problems. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of two physiotherapeutic interventions - aquatic therapy (AT) and land-based therapy (LBT) - for reducing pain in women with fibromyalgia. DESIGN: Single-blind, randomised controlled, equivalence trial. SETTING: Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Association in A Coruña, Spain. PARTICIPANTS: Forty women with fibromyalgia were assigned at random in a 1:1 manner to two groups: AT (n = 20) and LBT (n = 20). INTERVENTIONS: Two therapeutic exercise programmes, with 60-min sessions, were undertaken three times per week for 12 weeks. Sessions were carried out in groups by a trained physiotherapist. OUTCOME: The primary outcome was pain intensity (visual analogue scale). The secondary outcomes were pressure pain threshold (algometer), quality of life (Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire), sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), fatigue (Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory) and physical ability (6-Minute Walk Test). Patients were evaluated at baseline, 12 weeks (post-treatment) and 18 weeks (follow-up). The statistical analysis was per-protocol. P < 0.05 was considered to indicate significance. Effect size was calculated. RESULTS: The mean age was 50 [standard deviation (SD) 9] years, with median body mass index of 27 [interquartile range (IQR) 25-30] kg/m2 and median symptom duration of 11 (IQR 6-15) years. No differences were observed between the groups post-treatment, but differences in favour of AT were found in pain intensity [2.7 (IQR 1.5-4.9) vs 5.5 (IQR 3.3-7.6); p= 0.023; large effect, Cohen's d= 0.8; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.1-1.5] and sleep quality [12.0 (IQR 7.3-15.3) vs 15.0 (IQR 13.0-17.0); p= 0.030; large effect, Cohen's d= 0.8; 95% CI 0.1-1.5] at follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that AT is better than LBT for reducing pain intensity and improving sleep quality after 6 weeks of follow-up. ABSTRACT

AIMS: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effectiveness of a mindfulness-based intervention in improving sleep duration, sleep quality, and fatigue among Jordanian nurses. DESIGN AND METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was used to conduct this study. Data from 123 nurses (60 nurses in the interventional group and 63 nurses in the control group) were collected and analyzed. The primary outcome measures were compared between the intervention and control groups using repeated measure MANOVA to assess changes in sleep duration, sleep quality, and fatigue over time. RESULTS: The results showed that there was a statistically significant multivariate effect of the intervention on the linear combination of the dependent variables (sleep duration, sleep quality, and fatigue) (V = 0.23, F (3, 119) = 12.02, p < .001) with Partial η2 of 0.23. Follow-up analysis showed that the intervention group had lower sleep disturbances (Mean difference = -6.53, CI = -7.79 to -5.26) and less fatigue (Mean difference = -13.36, CI = -17.24 to -9.47) than the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The current study showed that the mindfulness-based intervention effectively addresses sleep quality and fatigue in nurses, which in turn is expected to positively impact the health care system. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Mindfulness-based interventions effectively address sleep quality and fatigue associated with nurses' job performance and outcomes. Implementing brief mindfulness-based interventions is crucial as they can be self-implemented and fit into nurses' busy schedules.

INTRODUCTION: Mild cognitive impairment is the middle level of natural cognitive impairment during primary steps of dementia. There are a few studies about improving the cognitive performance and sleep quality in patients with a limited dementia. So, this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Bacopa monnieri on cognitive performance and sleep quality of patients with mild cognitive impairment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 62 patients with mild cognitive impairment were categorized into two groups of control and intervention. The intervention group received one pill of 160 mg Bacopa monnieri extract in 2 months, and the control group received a pill containing starch powder. The cognitive impairment and sleep quality was assessed using a questionnaire containing demographic information, Montreal Cognitive Assessment, and the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index in three time-points of before the study, one months after the intervention and 2 months after the intervention (the end of study). RESULTS: The results showed no statistically significant difference between two groups in all three time-points in overall cognitive performance score and its 6 parameters (P > 0.05). While in the field of attention at the end of the first month (P = 0.033) and the end of the second month (P = 0.004), it was significant difference between the study groups. Also, in the field of verbal fluency at the end of the second month, this difference was significant (P = 0.003). The cognitive performance overall score showed no significant difference between two groups in first (P = 0.939) and second time-points (P = 0.661), although it was significant at third time-point (P = 0.029). There was no statistically significant difference between two groups in all time-points for sleep quality overall score (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results showed that Bacopa monnieri can improve the cognitive performance overall score and some of its parameters, but it had no effect on sleep quality.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Sleep quality is a pivotal part of health and there is growing evidence on the association between gut microbiota composition and sleep quality. 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is known as a precursor of the sleep regulating neurotransmitter and hormone. However, efficacy of 5-HTP supplementation for improving sleep quality in older adults is unclear. Hence, the aim of this study is to assess the impact of 5-HTP supplementation on sleep quality and gut microbiota composition in older adults. METHODS: This is a single-blinded, 12-week parallel randomized controlled trial. Thirty older adults (66 ± 3 years) in Singapore were randomly assigned to either consume or not consume 100 mg 5-HTP daily. Every 4 weeks, sleep quality was assessed via both subjective (Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index) and objective (actigraphy watch) measures. A global sleep score (GSS) was obtained from the PSQI, where a GSS>5 defines as poor sleeper while a GSS≤5 defines as good sleeper. Blood serotonin level, urine melatonin concentration, gut microbiota composition and stool short chain fatty acids (SCFA) content were assessed at week 0 and 12. This study was registered in clinicaltrials.gov as NCT04078724 (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04078724). RESULTS: 5-HTP supplementation showed an overall favorable effect on certain sleep quality components and an increase in serum serotonin concentration. In particular, at week 12, not good sleepers but poor sleepers with 5-HTP supplementation were able to significantly improve subjective GSS (ΔSL5-HTP: -2.80 ± 1.10 min, p-value = 0.005). In addition, they showed an increase in microbiota diversity (Simpson5-HTP vs. SimpsonControl: 0.037 ± 0.032 a.u. vs. -0.007 ± 0.022 a.u.; pinteraction: 0.013) and relative abundance of SCFA producing bacteria in the gut. CONCLUSIONS: 5-HTP supplementation can improve certain sleep quality components in older adults and this benefit was more prominently observed in poor sleepers. 5-HTP was also able to improve the gut microbiota composition in poor sleepers.

ABSTRACT

This narrative review describes the current state of the literature that has examined associations between non-sexual social touch (i.e., affectionate touch, touch therapies, touch with animals and inanimate objects that mimic social touch) and sleep quality. It also highlights areas for future research to clarify the links and to identify underlying mechanisms. Most existing studies have focussed on and shown positive effects of touch therapies (e.g., massage, therapeutic touch) on sleep quality in clinical populations. Although there are fewer studies examining how other forms of social touch are linked with sleep quality, the existing research provides preliminary evidence supporting affectionate touch (e.g., hugging, skin-to-skin contact) and tactile contact with animals (e.g., dogs) and objects that mimic social touch (e.g., robots, weighted blankets) as predictors of better sleep quality, while touch deprivation and touch aversion are associated with worse sleep quality. Informed by the existing literature, we additionally reviewed potential relational-cognitive (e.g., felt-security) and neurobiological (e.g., oxytocin) mechanisms likely to underlie associations between social touch and sleep quality. Overall, current research supports associations between non-sexual social touch and sleep quality. However, future research is needed to establish these links for specific forms of social touch (and in various populations), to test explanatory mechanisms, and to identify boundary conditions. Understanding associations between non-sexual social touch and sleep quality can inform the development of touch-based interventions to improve sleep quality and health.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a family-based judo program on sleep quality in youth diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). METHODS: Eighteen youth (13.17 years ± 3.76, 78% male) diagnosed with ASD participated in a 14-week family judo program. Sleep quality was assessed using the Actigraph GT9X accelerometer pre- and post-judo intervention. Non-parametric paired t-tests were conducted to examine changes in sleep quality variables. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in sleep efficiency (p = .05), and a significant decrease in both sleep latency (p = .001) and wake after sleep onset (p = .02) following participation in the judo program. There were no changes in sleep duration observed in this sample (p = .83). CONCLUSION: Participation in a family judo program may improve sleep quality in youth with ASD. More research is necessary to understand the mechanisms by which judo may improve sleep quality in youth with ASD.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Population aging is a problem that has affected most countries in the world. Poor-quality sleep is a common complaint among the elderly. Foot baths are a method of heat therapy and are performed as an independent nursing care in different departments. The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effects of foot baths with spa on improving the sleep quality of the elderly. METHODS: This research is a systematic review. We systematically searched six databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and the World Health Organization databases, to retrieve the related articles based on the keywords used in our search strategy from 2010 to March 2023. RESULT: Finally, 10 articles were included in this study. All studies were randomized controlled trial (RCTs) and semi-experimental. In all 9 studies, the positive effects of the foot bath were reported. In 9 studies, the effect of foot baths with water above 40 degrees Celsius was reported. The PSQR questionnaire was used in most of the studies. CONCLUSION: The total findings of this study showed that due to the high prevalence of sleep problems in the elderly, foot baths with warm water can be used as an easy, simple, and safe nursing intervention to improve sleep quality. Therefore, it can be used in nursing homes and hospitals. It is also a non-pharmacological and inexpensive nursing intervention that can be implemented by the elderly themselves after training by community health nurses.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of vitamin D and/or calcium supplementation on sleep quality in individuals with prediabetes. METHODS: A 24-week randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted in a 212 Chinese population with prediabetes. Participants were randomly assigned to four groups: vitamin D + calcium group (1600 IU/day + 500 mg/day, n = 53), vitamin D group (1600 IU/day, n = 54), calcium group (500 mg/day, n = 51), and control group (placebo, n = 54). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used as the primary outcome to assess sleep quality. Questionnaires and fasting blood samples were collected at baseline and post-intervention for demographic assessment and correlation index analysis. RESULTS: After a 24-week intervention, a significant difference was observed in serum 25(OH)D concentration among the four groups (P < 0.05), and the total PSQI score in vitamin D + calcium group was lower compared to the preintervention levels. Subgroup analyses revealed improved sleep quality with calcium supplementation (P < 0.05) for specific groups, including women, individuals with a low baseline 25(OH)D level (< 30 ng/mL), and individuals in menopause. Moreover, correlation analysis revealed a negative correlation between the extent of change in sleep efficiency scores before and after the calcium intervention and the degree of change in insulin efficiency scores (r = - 0.264, P = 0.007), as well as the magnitude of change in islet beta cell function (r = - 0.304, P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: The combined intervention of vitamin D and calcium, as well as calcium interventions alone, exhibits substantial potential for improving sleep quality in individuals with prediabetes. ABSTRACT

The aim of this prospective observational study was to evaluate the efficacy of a cycle of sulfate-arsenical-ferruginous mud bath therapy on pain, function, and sleep quality in patients with chronic low-back pain (CLBP). One hundred twenty-three patients treated at Levico Spa Center (Italy) with 12 daily local mud packs and generalized thermal baths were included in this experience. General medical assessments were performed before starting the therapy, at the end of the treatment, and 3 months later. Pain intensity and stiffness were measured by a 0 to 10 cm visual analogue scale (VAS); the range of mobility of the lumbar spine was evaluated using the Schober test and functional disability by the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDI). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess the sleep quality. The VAS score for pain and stiffness showed a significant reduction (p < 0.0001) at the end of the treatment persisting for 3 months of follow-up. Similarly, a significant improvement was found for the Schober test and RMDQ. Finally, we showed a significant decrease of PSQI score at the end of the cycle of mud bath and at 3 months of follow-up. The Spearman analysis showed a significant positive correlation between the score of PSQI and VAS pain, VAS stiffness, and RMDQ. In conclusion, this preliminary study confirms the beneficial and long-term efficacy of balneotherapy on pain and function and, for the first one, shows the positive effect on quality of sleep in patients with CLBP treated with a cycle of mud bath therapy.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Zhumian Tang formula granules combined with eszopiclone for treating poor sleep quality. METHODS: This multi-center, dynamic block-randomized, parallel-group superiority clinical trial included 130 patients. The combined treatment group received Zhumian Tang formula granules combined with eszopiclone treatment, and the control group received eszopiclone treatment only. The group allocation ratio was 1∶1. The duration of treatment was 2 weeks. Participants were asked to complete questionnaires before treatment, after 1 week of the intervention, after 2 weeks of the intervention, and at the follow-up on week 3. The primary outcomes were the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score and the total effective rate of treatment. The secondary outcome was the rate of adverse effects. RESULTS: Compared with the eszopiclone treatment group, the PSQI score of the combined treatment group was significantly lower after 2 weeks of the intervention (6.98 vs 8.26, P < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the mean PSQI score after 1 week of the intervention (9.89 vs 9.15, P = 0.124). After the follow-up on week 3, the PSQI score of the combined treatment group remained significantly lower than that of the eszopiclone treatment group (6.12 vs 8.31, P < 0.001). The total effective rates of treatment of the combined group and the eszopiclone group were 36.92% vs 35.38% (Z = 0.033, P = 0.855) after 1 week of the intervention, 83.08% vs 58.46% (Z = 9.519, P < 0.05) after 2 weeks of the intervention, and 83.08% vs 61.54% (Z = 7.530, P < 0.05) and after the follow-up on week 3, respectively. There was no significant difference in the overall rate of adverse reactions between the combined and eszopiclone treatment groups (21.53% vs 31.8%, P = 0.318). CONCLUSION: The combination of Zhumian Tang formula granules with eszopiclone was found to be safe and more effective in improving sleep quality than eszopiclone alone. Traditional Chinese medicine can enhance the effectiveness of Western medicine in the treatment of insomnia.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Entering old age is associated with various physical and psychological disabilities. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the effect of mindfulness-based stress reduction program on emotion regulation and sleep problems in depressed elderly. METHODS: This study was a clinical trial conducted on 60 elderly individuals with depression using purposive sampling. These elderly were referred by geriatricians and were included in the study based on the inclusion criteria. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups: the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) group and the control group. Both groups completed the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), the Gratz and Roemer Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index before and after the intervention. The MBSR sessions were held for the experimental group in 8 sessions of 90 min each, once a week. Finally, all the data were analyzed using SPSS software version 26 through descriptive and analytical statistics such as mean and standard deviation, t-tests and mixed analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with repeated measures. RESULTS: The results showed that the MBSR intervention led to a significant reduction in depression symptoms (p < 0.001) and improvement in emotion regulation and sleep quality (p < 0.001) among the elderly participants with depression in the intervention group. DISCUSSION: The results of this study showed that MBSR can be effective in reducing depression levels, improving emotion regulation, and sleep quality among depressed elderly individuals compared to the control group. Caregivers and psychotherapists of nursing homes can use care programs such as MBSR program to improve the physical and mental condition of the elderly. ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this convergent mixed methods study was to assess the perceptions and characteristics of sleep in breast cancer survivors (BCSs) and elucidate perceptions of sleep among BCS with lymphedema. METHODS: Participants were BCS with and without lymphedema. Both groups completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), PROMIS® Sleep Disturbance (8a short form), and wore an actigraph on their wrist to capture sleep/wake cycles for 7 days/nights while logging their sleep using a sleep diary. The coefficient of variation of sleep efficiency was calculated from the sleep diary to assess intraindividual variability. In addition, a subsample of BCS with lymphedema participated in a semi-structured qualitative interview. The qualitative data was analyzed separately, and the themes were applied to provide a more nuanced explanation of the quantitative outcomes. RESULTS: The BCS with lymphedema (n=23) had a significant difference in PSQI (p=0.002), PROMIS® Sleep Disturbance (p=0.084), and sleep efficiency coefficient of variation (p=0.014) compared to BCS without lymphedema (n=23). There were no statistically significant differences between groups in the actigraphy results. BCS with lymphedema perceived that lymphedema management contributed to their sleep disturbance, further exacerbating their mind/body fatigue. CONCLUSION: This study provides the foundation for future research to investigate the integration of sleep interventions with lymphedema management for holistic survivorship care for BCS with lymphedema. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS: An innovative sleep health intervention designed to consider the unique factors contributing to sleep disturbance in BCS with lymphedema will fill a gap in their post-cancer treatment quality of life.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To observe the clinical efficacy of acupoint massage at Shenque (CV 8) for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). METHODS: A total of 71 patients with CFS were randomized into an observation group (36 cases, 2 cases were eliminated, 3 cases dropped out) and a control group (35 cases). Using a specially made massage instrument, acupoint massage was adopted at the the five points of Shenque (CV 8), i.e. the center and the upper, lower, left, and right parts of the inner wall. The manipulation was given 10 min a time, once every 2 days, 3 times a week for 4 weeks continuously. No intervention was delivered in the control group. Before and after treatment, the scores of fatigue scale-14 (FS-14) and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) were observed, and the clinical efficacy was evaluated in the both groups. RESULTS: After treatment, the physical fatigue and mental fatigue scores, as well as the total score of FS-14 were decreased compared with those before treatment in the observation group (P<0.001); the above scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.001). After treatment, excepted for the sleep time and hypnotic scores, the remaining item scores and the total score of PSQI were decreased compared with those before treatment in the observation group (P<0.05); the each item score and the total score of PSQI were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). The total effective rate in the observation group was superior to that in the control group (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Acupoint massage at Shenque (CV 8) can effectively improve the fatigue state and sleep quality in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.
