ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: To compare the effect of ultrasound guided saline enema (USGSE) and x-ray fluoroscopic air enema in the reduction of intussusception in children, 80 children with intussusception were randomly divided into ultrasonic-guided saline enema reduction in 40 cases (USGSE group) and x-ray air enema reduction in 40 cases (air enema group). The enema pressure, success rate, average time, and cost of the 2 methods were compared. The average operation time of the USGSE group was lower than that of the air group ([5.35 ± 1.79] min vs [6.03 ± 2.41] min, P = 0.159), the average pressure of the air group was higher than that of the air group ([10.95 ± 1.54] kPa vs [9.6 ± 1.26] kPa; P < 0.001), the success rate of resetting was higher than that of the air group (87.5% vs 85.0%; P = 0.745), and the cost of USGSE was lower than that of the air group ([339.23 ± 10.73] yuan vs [378.23 ± 18.20] yuan, P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis showed that the success rate of enema treatment in children with onset time <48 hours was significantly higher than that in children with onset time ≥48 hours (98.30% vs 54.50%, continuous correction χ 2 = 22.16; P < 0.001). The success rate and operation time of USGSE in pediatric intussusception reduction are similar to that of air enema, and the advantages of low cost and no radiation are worthy of popularization. For children with onset time ≥48 hours, enema reduction is safe and effective, but the conversion rate to open is high. It is necessary to carefully identify the symptoms of intestinal perforation and necrosis on the basis of strictly following the indications to avoid delayed treatment.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of oil- and air-heat treatments on the durability of Paulownia tomentosa and Pinus koraiensis woods against Fomitopsis palustris and Trametes versicolor. The wood samples were treated in palm oil and air at 180, 200, and 220 °C for 2 h. The weight loss, morphology, crystalline properties, and chemical compounds of untreated and heat-treated wood after fungal attack were investigated. The significant difference in weight loss between oil- and air-heat-treated samples was shown at 220 °C. Heat-treated wood exposed to white-rot fungus showed a lower weight loss than that exposed to brown-rot fungus. The cell components in the untreated- and heat-treated Paulownia tomentosa and Pinus koraiensis at 180 °C were severely damaged due to fungal exposure compared to those at 220 °C. A fungal effect on the relative crystallinity was observed in heat-treated wood at 180 °C, whereas the effect was not observed at 220 °C. Following brown-rot fungus exposure, untreated- and heat-treated wood at 180 °C showed a notable change in the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) peaks of polysaccharides, whereas no noticeable change in lignin peaks was observed. Heat-treated wood at 220 °C showed no noticeable change in the FTIR spectra owing to brown-rot fungus exposure. Exposure to white-rot fungus did not noticeably change the FTIR spectra of untreated and heat-treated wood.

ABSTRACT

The continuous degradation of environmental ecosystems (land, water and soil) resulting from crude oil exploration and exploitation activities continues to gain global attention. This study investigates the effects of crude oil exploration and exploitation activities on soil, water and air in the study area. Soil samples were collected in three replicates at depths of 0-15 and 15-30 cm at sampling distances of 20, 100 and 200 m a from core oil exploitation operation area and a control point. Water samples were also taken from within the study area and analyzed using standard procedures. Major pollutants concentrations of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) of the air were also measured using Air Quality Index (AQI). The results reveal that the soil, water and air parameters measured mostly at 20 m from the core oil operation area compromise the allowable standards provided for healthy living. In the same manner, some results at 100 and 200 m were slightly higher than the recommended values in some cases of heavy metals and bacteria activities in the soil. The AQI at 20 m was far above the permissible limit provided by the Environmental Protection Agency while others are gradually drawing towards the limit given for each pollutant. To safeguard the health of the residents of the host community and oil field workers, there is a need for proper and frequent environmental monitoring and assessment by authorized regulatory bodies in Nigeria. This will prevent any future exposure which may endanger the lives of the dwellers.

BACKGROUND: Pneumatic reduction of ileocolic intussusception is commonly performed with manual insufflators. The challenge of operating a handheld device while controlling the fluoroscope and monitoring the reduction could be obviated if the manual insufflation could be eliminated. OBJECTIVE: The aim in this retrospective study was to describe and evaluate the use of medical wall air in intussusception reduction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all intussusception reductions over a period of years: from 2015 to 2018 using the manual insufflator and from 2018 to 2021 using medical air. We compared success rates, complication rates and time to reduction as documented on fluoroscopic image time stamps. Demographic data were obtained from the medical record. Attending radiologists and fluoroscopic technologists indicated their preference between methods, ease of use, perceived duration of reduction and perceived difference in success rates through an anonymous internal survey. RESULTS: There were 179 first reduction attempts in 167 patients (93 attempts during the period using the manual insufflator and 86 after converting to wall air). There was no difference in reduction duration (8:23 min for insufflation, 8:22 min for wall air, P=0.99) and no statistically significant difference in success rate (66.8% for insufflation and 79.1% for wall air, P=0.165). All survey respondents preferred the wall air method. The vast majority (93%) perceived that the wall air method was faster. CONCLUSION: Hospital wall air can be used to successfully reduce intussusceptions without incurring time burden or loss of effectiveness. The method leads to a perception of increased efficiency.

ABSTRACT

Pollen grains strongly affect human health by inducing allergies. Although the monitoring of airborne pollens particles is of major importance, the current measurement methods are manually conducted and are expensive, limiting the number of monitoring stations. Thus, there is a need for relatively low-cost instruments that can work automatically. The possible detection of pollen in urban ambient air (Paris, France) has been reported using the LOAC optical aerosol counter. These measurements indicate that the pollen grains and their nature could be determined using their scattering properties. For this purpose, the scattering functions (intensity and linear polarization) of 21 different airborne pollens were established in the laboratory using a PROGRA2 instrument. The linear polarization curves were close together, with a maximum polarization lower than 10% in the red domain and 5% in the green domain. The variability from one sample to another was partly due to the different sizes of the grains. An instrument with an absolute accuracy of about ±1% for polarization measurements should then be needed, coupled with a counting instrument to take into account the effects of size. On the other hand, the scattering curves for intensity presented with different shapes and strong differences up to a factor of 20 at some scattering angles, due to the size, shape, surface texture, and composition of the grains. Thus, we propose a proof of concept for new automated sensors that can be used in dense networks to count and identify pollen grains by analyzing the light they scatter at some specific angles.

ABSTRACT

Crocins in commercial liquid saffron extracts (Saffr'activ®) were identified using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a diode array detector (DAD) and mass spectrometry (MS). The impact of storage on the qualities of the saffron extract were studied with HPLC-DAD-MS by exposing trans-4-GG crocin to environmental factors. Light and temperature induced degradation after only one week. Trans-4-GG crocin was totally hydrolyzed when stored at 60 °C and exposed to light. A quick and reliable method using HPLC-DAD was then developed to improve quantification of crocins in commercial liquid saffron extracts. An internal standard quantification method that uses a response factor, corrected with the molecular weight of each crocin, improved results for old saffron extracts.

ABSTRACT

This is the case of a 9-month-old female infant who presented to the emergency department with a history of several episodes of nonbilious and nonbloody emesis. The patient was found to be afebrile with normal vital signs and an otherwise normal physical examination. Initial plain film radiography was concern for possible obstruction. Imaging studies with ultrasonogram demonstrated intussusception. This was an unusual case of intussusception because children are typically more ill-appearing with vomiting, diarrhea, fevers, lethargy, and blood in stool. Management options included surgery, pneumatic enema reduction, and barium enema reduction. Pneumatic enema reduction was performed. This procedure has been shown to have superior outcomes in infants with intussusception. Advanced practice providers need to provide a detailed history, complete a thorough physical examination, order the appropriate diagnostics, and be vigilant of the clinical manifestation of intussusception.

ABSTRACT

The initial water content was closely related to the oil absorption and properties of fried food. The effects of convective air drying (D) and ultrasound combined convective air drying (UD) pretreatment on the properties and oil absorption of potato chips have been investigated. The oil contents were 48.48 ± 1.42% and 39.78 ± 3.08% for control samples (without D and UD pretreatment) and ultrasound treated samples (without D pretreatment). When the mass loss of samples was reached the proportion of quality to without drying samples quality 80%, 50%, and 20%, the oil contents of D pretreated samples decreased by 12.67%, 28.24% and 62.07%, respectively, and the oil contents of UD pretreated samples decreased by 7.42%, 24.10% and 51.76% (compared to the ultrasound pretreated samples ), respectively. By applying ultrasound before frying, more cracks and pores were exhibited of fried potato chips. After drying process, potato chips exhibited less disruption of cell structure and less deformation of cell irregular. The hardness of the D and UD pretreated potato chips increased with the extension of drying. The FTIR analysis stated the formation of amylose-lipid complexes. This research could contribute to providing evidence for the development and application of the pretreatment strategies.

Grass pollen allergens are known to be one of the major triggers of hay fever with an increasing number of humans affected by pollen associated health impacts. Climate change characterized by increasing air temperature and more frequent drought periods might affect plant development and pollen characteristics. In this study a one-year (2017) field experiment was conducted in Bavaria, Germany, simulating drought by excluding rain and elevated air temperature by installing a heating system to investigate their effects primarily on the allergenic potential of eight selected cultivars of the two grass species timothy and perennial ryegrass. It could be shown for timothy that especially under drought and heat conditions the allergen content is significantly lower accompanied by a decrease in pollen weight and protein content. In perennial ryegrass the response to drought and heat conditions in terms of allergen content, pollen weight, and protein content was more dependent on the respective cultivar probably due to varying requirements for their growth conditions and tolerance to drought and heat. Results support recommendations which cultivars should be grown preferentially. The optimal choice of grass species and respective cultivars under changing climate conditions should be a major key aspect for the public health sector in the future.

ABSTRACT

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are a new class of green "designer solvent"; its physicochemical properties can be easily tuned by adjusting DES' constituents, chemical ratio and water content. In this study, three hydrophobic DESs with low viscosity, low density, and melting points close to room temperature were designed and synthesized. Based on these DESs, an air-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction technique was developed based on the solidification of floating DESs for the simultaneous determination of bisphenols and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) via HPLC. The microextraction parameters were optimized via the Plackett-Burman design and response surface methodologies. The method shows satisfactory linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9928), a low limit of detection (0.16-0.75 µg L-1) and satisfactory precision (≤2.3%), and was successfully applied for the simultaneous determination of bisphenols and PAHs from tea infusions with satisfactory recoveries (82.0-116.6%). This method is simple, rapid, economical, environmentally compatible, dispersive solvent-frees and centrifugation-free, and has promising applications in food safety.

ABSTRACT

The Greenwich Prime Meridian is one of the iconic features of the Royal Museums Greenwich. Visitors to the Museum even queue up to pose with one leg on either side of the Line. Yet, the Airy Transit Circle, the instrument that defined the meridian, is almost always excluded from these photographs. This paper examines how the instrument has become hidden in plain sight within the stories of Greenwich Time and Greenwich Meridian, as well as within the public imagination, by providing an analysis of the instrument's transformation from a working astronomical instrument to a museum object. The paper highlights the gradual decoupling of the instrument from narratives of Time and Longitude, which resulted in the Line's popularity overshadowing the instrument that defined it. By doing so, the paper aims at showing the symbiotic relationship between the materiality of the instrument and the meridian line that it defined. Approaching the instrument through the lenses of object biographies, the paper raises the question of whether the life of the instrument came to an end once operations with it were terminated. The analysis of the Transit Circle's life reveals that it reached its end multiple times, which shifts the emphasis away from a single and ultimate end of scientific objects to a process of gradual downfall, during which they can "end" several times. In addition, through the object biography approach, the Transit Circle no longer appears as a dead object reaching an afterlife within a museum setting. Instead, the approach demonstrates that, though the instrument can still be restored to an operational order, doubts about its accuracy, and its relevancy to today's astronomical methods, have led the instrument to be considered obsolete, transforming it into a museum object on display.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies indicate that the bioactive compounds of Eugenia stipitata pulp have antimutagenic, anticarcinogenic and antigenotoxic properties, but its use has been limited due to its high perishability. The aim of this study was to preserve bioactivity by using spray-drying microencapsulation, and is pioneering for its use of DSC to determine the best proportion of wall material (maltodextrin or gum arabic) and drying temperature (100 or 120 °C). The microparticles with maltodextrin (1:9)-100 °C had the best bioactivity conservation after in vitro gastrointestinal digestion, conserving 61% of total polyphenols, and 101%, 85% and 31% of antioxidant capacity according to the ABTS, FRAP and DPPH test methods respectively. These microparticles had a spherical morphology, presented good thermal stability and can be stored at a temperature range from 20 to 40 °C without becoming sticky. Therefore, spray-drying microencapsulation together with DSC is important for preserving a high concentration of bioactive compounds.

ABSTRACT

Mercury is found in Arctic marine mammals that are important in the diet of northern Indigenous peoples. The objectives of the present long-term study, spanning a 45-yr period, were to 1) investigate the temporal trends of total mercury (THg; muscle and liver) and selenium (Se; liver) in ringed seals (Pusa hispida) from different regions of the Canadian Arctic; and 2) examine possible relationships with age, diet, and climate parameters such as air temperature, precipitation, climatic indices, and ice-coverage. Ringed seals were collected by hunters in northern communities in the Beaufort Sea, Central Arctic, Eastern Baffin Island, Hudson Bay, and Ungava/Nunatsiavut regions (Canada) between 1972 and 2017. Mercury levels did not change through time in seal liver, but THg levels in muscle decreased in seals from Hudson Bay (-0.91%/yr) and Ungava/Nunatsiavut (-1.30%/yr). Carbon stable isotope values in seal muscle decreased significantly through time in 4 regions. Selenium-to-THg ratios were found to be >1 for all years and regions. Variation partitioning analyses across regions indicated that THg trends in seals were mostly explained by age (7.3-21.7%), climate parameters (3.5-12.5%), and diet (up to 9%); climate indices (i.e., Arctic and North Atlantic Oscillations, Pacific/North American pattern) explained the majority of the climate portion. The THg levels had a positive relationship with Arctic Oscillation for multiple regions. Associations of THg with air temperature, total precipitation, and sea-ice coverage, as well as with North Atlantic Oscillation and Pacific/North American pattern were found to vary with tissue type and geographical area. ABSTRACT

The plasma seed treatment is effective for promoting seed germination in many crops. However, the biological mechanism remains unclear. Therefore, mRNA sequencing was used to screen differentially expressed genes in the germination process of Andrographis paniculata seeds treated with air plasma (power density = 8.99 J/cm3). Following plasma treatment, the germination percentages were significantly higher than those of the control, they were 3.5±0.6% vs. 0 at 28 hours after sowing (HAS) and 50.3±2.6% vs. 37.3±1.7% at 48 HAS. After unigenes were assembled and annotated, 125 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected at 28 HAS, compared with nine DEGs at 48 HAS, but no DEGs were detected at 0 HAS, indicating that air plasma treatment mainly changed the gene expression of A. paniculata seeds at 28 HAS. The NCED5 expression level of the treated group was less than one-fifth of the control, and the expressions of three ethylene response factors were significantly higher than the control at 28 HAS, indicating that lower abscisic acid levels play an important role and ethylene signal transduction also participates in radicle protrusion. ACO, NRT1 and PRP3 expressions were significantly higher than in the control at 48 HAS, suggesting that higher ethylene levels cause the endosperm cap to weaken and start to grow root hairs and lateral roots earlier. These findings reveal that plasma promotes seed germination mainly by regulating the expression of hormone-related genes. And the possible signal transduction of related hormones was discussed.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of surface treatment and repair material on the repair shear bond strength (SBS) of the bioactive restorative material. METHODS: A total of 240 Activa BioActive Restorative (Activa) discs were prepared, aged, and polished, and divided randomly into eight groups (n = 30). Groups 1-4 discs were repaired with bulk-fill flowable resin-based composite (Bulk-RBC), and Groups 5-8 discs with Activa. Surface treatment used for each repair material type were air abrasion with silica-coated 30-m Al2O3 particles (air abrasion) (Groups 2 & 6), Air abrasion with universal primer (Groups 3 & 7), and Air abrasion with universal adhesive (Groups 4 & 8). Groups 1 and 5 were controls without surface treatment. SBS test was performed, and the failure mode and surface topography were assessed. RESULTS: Surface treatment with air abrasion significantly improved the SBS for repair using both Activa and Bulk-RBC. Repair SBS using Activa was significantly higher compared with Bulk-RBC. Cohesive failure in substrate and mixed failures were most common in the surface-treated groups (2-4, 6-8). Air abrasion produced prominent surface topography changes compared with polishing. CONCLUSION: Air abrasion enhances the repair SBS of aged bioactive restorative material. The use of the same material (Activa) for repair affords a higher bond strength compared with the use bulk-RBC.

Radiographs may be of limited value in the diagnosis of intussusception and are sometimes utilized primarily to exclude pneumoperitoneum before therapeutic enema reduction. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine if radiographic findings in ileocolic intussusception can offer prognostic information regarding the outcome of therapeutic air enema and, for those requiring surgical intervention, surgical outcomes and/or complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single institution retrospective study was performed including all enemas for intussusception performed during a 5-year period from September 2012 to August 2017. Radiographs obtained before therapeutic enema, including our institution radiographs, outside facility radiographs, or scout images obtained during fluoroscopy or computed tomography (CT), were independently scored by two pediatric radiologists for normal bowel gas pattern, soft-tissue mass, paucity of bowel gas, meniscus sign and bowel obstruction. The reviewers were blinded to enema and surgical outcomes at the time of review. Differences were resolved by consensus. Cases were excluded in which there was no adequate pre-procedure radiograph. In total, 182 cases were reviewed. The medical records were reviewed for enema and surgical outcomes. RESULTS: Radiographic findings included normal bowel gas pattern in 13%, soft-tissue mass in 26%, paucity of bowel gas in 65%, meniscus sign in 12% and obstruction in 10% of the cases, with 17.5% of patients having more than one finding. In patients with bowel obstruction on radiographs, there was a statistically significant decrease in success of therapeutic enema (83% vs. 21%, P=0.0001), increase in complicated surgical reductions (47% vs. 4%, P=0.0012), and increase in bowel resection (42% vs. 4%, P=0.003) compared to patients with normal bowel gas pattern. CONCLUSION: Radiographs can offer prognostic information regarding the potential for therapeutic enema success, as well as potential surgical outcomes in patients failing enema reduction. Particularly, bowel obstruction significantly decreases the success of therapeutic enema and increases the need for bowel resection.

ABSTRACT

Shifts in cellular metabolic phenotypes have the potential to cause disease-driving processes in respiratory disease. The respiratory epithelium is particularly susceptible to metabolic shifts in disease, but our understanding of these processes is limited by the incompatibility of the technology required to measure metabolism in real-time with the cell culture platforms used to generate differentiated respiratory epithelial cell types. Thus, to date, our understanding of respiratory epithelial metabolism has been restricted to that of basal epithelial cells in submerged culture, or via indirect end point metabolomics readouts in lung tissue. Here we present a novel methodology using the widely available Seahorse Analyzer platform to monitor real-time changes in the cellular metabolism of fully differentiated primary human airway epithelial cells grown at air-liquid interface (ALI). We show increased glycolytic, but not mitochondrial, ATP production rates in response to physiologically relevant increases in glucose availability. We also show that pharmacological inhibition of lactate dehydrogenase is able to reduce glucose-induced shifts toward aerobic glycolysis. This method is timely given the recent advances in our understanding of new respiratory epithelial subtypes that can only be observed in vitro through culture at ALI and will open new avenues to measure real-time metabolic changes in healthy and diseased respiratory epithelium, and in turn the potential for the development of novel therapeutics targeting metabolic-driven disease phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus as to when surgical intervention should be considered for recurrent ileocolic intussusceptions in a stable patient after previous successful air contrast enema. OBJECTIVE: To review the patterns of ileocolic intussusceptions, air contrast enema success rates, and pathologic lead point rates in patients with and without recurrence to evaluate whether treatment outcomes depend on the number and timing between episodes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 683 children with air contrast enema performed for ileocolic intussusception between January 2000 and May 2018. Recurrent intussusceptions were separated into mutually exclusive categories: short-term only (≤7 days between episodes) and long-term (>7 days between episodes) intussusceptions. Long-term recurrences included both long-term only and long- and short-term intussusceptions. RESULTS: Of the 683 patients, 606 (89%) had at least 1 successful air contrast enema. Of the 606, 115 (19%) had recurrent intussusceptions after successful reduction. The air contrast enema success rate for a single intussusception was 86% (491/568) and for recurrent intussusceptions was 96% (110/115) (P=0.004). Single and recurrent intussusceptions had similar pathologic lead point rates (3.5% vs. 4.3%; P=0.593). Short-term and long-term recurrences did not differ in air contrast enema success rates (96% vs. 95%). Long-term recurrences had higher pathologic lead point rate compared to short-term only (13% vs. 0%; P=0.003). Of short-term recurrences, 99% (76/77) were ≤5 intussusceptions; 92% had successful air contrast enema without surgery. CONCLUSION: The majority of recurrent intussusceptions were successfully treated by air contrast enema. Short-term recurrences have lower pathologic lead point rates, suggesting that a higher surgical threshold may be plausible relative to long-term recurrences. In the appropriate clinical context, repeat air contrast enemas are a safe option for short-term recurrences, which can be attempted at least five times, potentially precluding the need for surgical intervention.

Background and objectives: The relationship between air pollen quantity and the sensitization of allergic patients is crucial for both the diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases. Weather conditions influence the distribution of allergenic pollen and increases in pollen concentration may negatively affect the health of allergic patients. The aim of this study was to analyze the implementation of allergen immunotherapy with regard to air pollen concentration. Material and Methods: Here we examined the relationship between Betula air pollen concentration and the usage of Betula verrucosa allergen immunotherapy in Serbia. Examination covered the period from 2015 to 2018. Measurement of airborne pollen concentration was performed with Lanzoni volumetric pollen traps. The evidence of the usage of sublingual allergen immunotherapy (SLIT) was gathered from patients with documented sensitization to specific pollen. Results: During this period tree pollens were represented with 58% ± 21% of all measured air pollen species, while Betula pollen represented 15% ± 8% of all tree pollens. Betula pollination peaked in April. Allergen immunotherapy to Betula verrucosa in Serbia is entirely conducted as sublingual immunotherapy and represents 47.1% ± 1.4% of issued tree pollen SLIT. The use of pollen SLIT increased by 68% from 2015 to 2018, with an even greater increase in usage recorded for Betula SLIT-80%. Conclusions: This analysis shows a clear causative relationship between pollination and the type/prevalence of applied allergen immunotherapy. Information about the flowering seasons of allergenic plants is very important for people who suffer from allergy, for clinical allergologists, as well as for governing authorities. The presented data is of practical importance to the proper timing of immunotherapy initiation and of importance for urban landscaping. The obtained data can be the starting point for the instatement of a thorough epidemiological study and the inclusion of Serbia on the pollen map of Europe.

ABSTRACT

Genetic analysis of airborne plant material has historically focused (generally implicitly rather than as a stated goal) on pollen from anemophilous (wind-pollinated) species, such as in multiple studies examining the relationship of allergens to human health. Inspired by the recent influx of literature applying environmental DNA (eDNA) approaches to targeted-species and whole-ecosystem study, we conducted a proof-of-concept experiment to determine whether airborne samples reliably detect genetic material from non-anemophilous species that may not be releasing large plumes of pollen. We collected airborne eDNA using Big Spring Number Eight dust traps and quantified the amount of eDNA present for a flowering wind-pollinated genus (Bouteloua) and insect-pollinated honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) that was not flowering at the time of the study. We were able to detect airborne eDNA from both species. Since honey mesquite is insect-pollinated and was not flowering during the time of this study, our results confirm that airborne eDNA consists of and can detect species through more than just pollen. Additionally, we were able to detect temporal patterns reflecting Bouteloua reproductive ecology and suggest that airborne honey mesquite eDNA responded to weather conditions during our study. These findings suggest a need for more study of the ecology of airborne eDNA to uncover its potential for single-species and whole-community research and management in terrestrial ecosystems.
