ABSTRACT
This paper used RIA method to observe 11 cases of prolapsed intervertebral disc patients, detect the change of cAMP and cGMP in the cerebrospinal fluid before and after finger pressing massage in acupuncture point Weizhong and Chengshan in order to discuss the mechanism of analgesia of finger pressing massage. The results showed that the pain was relieved after finger pressing massage. cAMP of the cerebrospinal fluid increased from 0.51 +/- 0.19 to 0.63 +/- 0.13 pm/ml, in average 32% higher than that before the therapy (P less than 0.05). Since cGMP decreased from 30.52 +/- 26.42 to 23.20 +/- 16.91 pm/ml, it showed that the mechanism of analgesia of finger pressing massage might be due to the fact that the therapy excited selectively endogenous analgesia system, caused the increase of endorphin releasing, and was accompanied by the regulation of cAMP and cGMP.

Rabbit model of fever was produced by means of subcutaneous inoculation of pneumocci. Third ventricular intubation and irrigation were carried out in rabbits. Irrigation fluid was collected during the stage of normal temperature, at the peak of fever and when the temperature was lowered by rhubarb. cAMP was detected with RlA in each of the three portions of the irrigated CSF. The result showed that cAMP level was raised during fever and decreased after rhubarb administration. Irrigation of CSF without medication had no significant influence on cAMP level.

Lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) norepinephrine concentrations determined by radioenzymatic assay in four epileptic patients were significantly higher during either chronic unilateral or bilateral cerebellar stimulation than those determined after a 7-day period without stimulation. The mean CSF norepinephrine levels noted during these two modes of cerebellar stimulation were not significantly different. The percentage of increase in CSF norepinephrine in one patient receiving 200/sec stimulation was 3 times higher than those noted in the three patients undergoing 10/sec stimulation. These evoked alterations in norepinephrine metabolism may relate to the reported modulation of spasticity and cerebral neuronal excitability during chronic cerebellar stimulation. Lumbar CSF cyclic adenosine monophosphate levels determined by radioimmunoassay were not significantly altered by either mode or frequency of cerebellar stimulation.

In rabbit cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) during fever induced by endotoxins, myxoviruses, or endogenous pyrogen, concentrations of adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cyclic AMP) and prostaglandin E (PGE) are about 2-fold higher in comparison to normal values. In endotoxin treated animals paracetamol reduced the fever reaction and both PGE and cyclic AMP levels. Administration of theophyllin together with endotoxin enhanced the fever reaction and cyclic AMP levels in CSF, but had no influence on stimulation of PGE synthesis. Following injection of PGE2 into the lateral cerebral ventricles increased cyclic AMP concentrations were found in CSF. The results suggest, that the pyrogenic effect of PGE is mediated by stimulation of cerebral cyclic AMP synthesis.

Rabbits were anesthetized with urethane, and the concentration of 3',5' cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was measured before and after injection into the cisterna magna of the following biologically active peptides and amines; adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), beta-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (beta-MSH), choroid plexus peptide IIF, arginine vasopressin, oxytocin, glucagon, epinephrine, serotonin, histamine, and acetylcholine. Only epinephrine and the lipolytic-melanotropic peptides ACTH, beta-MSH, and IIF influenced cAMP. Five to 500 mug ACTH caused a 3 to 10X increase in cAMP within 30 min; the concentration of nucleotide returned to baseline within 60-90 min after 5 or 50 mug, and remained elevated for at least 120 min after 500 mug. Effects of the same magnitude and tempo as those caused by 5 to 500 mug ACTH were produced by .1 to 10 mug beta-MSH and 5 to 500 mug IIF. Epinephrine at doses of 5 to 500 mug caused rises in cAMP of similar degree as the same dose of ACTH or peptide IIF, but the peak value was not reached until 60 to 90 min after injection.
