ABSTRACT

Objective: to understand the importance and spiritual experience of patients undergoing oncologic treatment. Method: qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study developed in a high complexity oncologic care unit in the southwest of Bahia. The collection took place in June 2019, through a guided interview, using a semi-structured script, with the final sample having 10 patients undergoing oncologic treatment. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed through the content analysis technique of Bardin. Results: the importance and benefits promoted by the use of spirituality during chemotherapy were evidenced. The need for a greater and better approach to spirituality by health professionals during care has been proven. Final considerations: in view of the difficulties encountered during oncologic treatment, spirituality becomes a beneficial strategy used by patients. Even so, the use of spiritual care as an instrument of care by health professionals is a challenge to be overcome.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe in our environment the level of knowledge about the construct internationally accepted by the nursing profession on spirituality and religiosity and attitudes towards the practice of spiritual and religious care. Methods: Quantitative, descriptive and transversal study. We have explored the knowledge and attitudes of nurses regarding the concept of spirituality and religiosity using a self-designed questionnaire. Results: We obtained 78.23% in correct knowledge and 69.84% in positive attitude towards spiritual and religious care. Conclusions: In our environment, nurses demonstrate an understanding of spiritual and religious care in tune with the construct that advocates internationally. Attitudes before this care are favorable although the need for awareness of direct accountability to them beyond the correct referral to other competent professionals is detected. It is necessary to complete the training in some aspects of the intervention

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to share a "research journey" to study the somewhat controversial subject of Christian intercessory prayer (CIP) utilized as a clinical intervention, and the knowledge gained along the way. This article will explore the steps in the development and implementation of clinical research to scientifically examine a phenomenon that many say cannot--and should not--be studied. The sequential steps in developing this area of study are detailed and explained from the conception of the initial idea through utilization of concept analysis and literature review to develop the researchable topic. The subsequent development of both qualitative and quantitative pilot studies to investigate CIP in depth is presented to illustrate how the intervention of CIP can successfully be incorporated into clinical research. This article provides guidelines for future researchers who may want to utilize CIP as an intervention.

ABSTRACT

Spirituality plays a powerful role in cancer treatment and recovery; it has been identified by hospitalized patients as one of their top priorities of care. However, health care providers struggle to find ways to address the spirituality of their patients. The purposes of this study were to discover what spirituality means for men with prostate cancer and how it influences their treatment. Eleven men, ages 54 to 71, with prostate cancer were interviewed within several days following radical prostatectomy with bilateral lymph node staging. This grounded theory methodology generated three categories of spirituality: (a) praying, (b) receiving support, and (c) coping with cancer. The basic social process, coping with cancer, occurred in four phases: facing cancer, choosing treatment, trusting, and living day by day. These results were validated by four of the participants for truthfulness. The findings of this study provide holistic nurses with knowledge and a midrange theory of spirituality that can be used in building a research-based practice.

ABSTRACT

Prayer is an integral component of the spiritual life of mankind. Prayer allows people to express themselves during crisis and emotional turmoil. It can serve as an important source of personal strength and as a foundation for self-resilience during times of adversity. Holistic nurses may use prayer with patients to positively influence how patients cope with anxiety relative to illness.

ABSTRACT

The history of health care was the history of the church until the advent of scientific medicine. Now, through parish nursing, "the church's role has been reclaimed," says Gail Brimbecom, a Canadian pioneer in this growing specialty.
