Litter input triggers the secretion of soil extracellular enzymes and facilitates the release of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) from decomposing litter. However, how soil extracellular enzyme activities were controlled by litter input with various substrates is not fully understood. We examined the activities and stoichiometry of five enzymes including ß-1,4-glucosidase, ß-D-cellobiosidase, ß-1,4-N-acetyl-glucosaminidase, leucine aminopeptidase and acidic phosphatase (AP) with and without litter input in 10-year-old Castanopsis carlesii and Cunninghamia lanceolata plantations monthly during April to August, in October, and in December 2021 by using an in situ microcosm experiment. The results showed that: 1) There was no significant effect of short-term litter input on soil enzyme activity, stoichiometry, and vector properties in C. carlesii plantation. In contrast, short-term litter input significantly increased the AP activity by 1.7% in May and decreased the enzymatic C/N ratio by 3.8% in August, and decreased enzymatic C/P and N/P ratios by 11.7% and 10.3%, respectively, in October in C. lanceolata plantation. Meanwhile, litter input increased the soil enzymatic vector angle to 53.8° in October in C. lanceolata plantations, suggesting a significant P limitation for soil microorganisms. 2) Results from partial least squares regression analyses showed that soil dissolved organic matter and microbial biomass C and N were the primary factors in explaining the responses of soil enzymatic activity to short-term litter input in both plantations. Overall, input of low-quality (high C/N) litter stimulates the secretion of soil extracellular enzymes and accelerates litter decomposition. There is a P limitation for soil microorganisms in the study area.

OBJECTIVE: To develop an interference-free and rapid method to elucidate Guanxin II (GX II)'s representative vasodilator absorbed bioactive compounds (ABCs) among enormous phytochemicals. METHODS: The contents of ferulic acid, tanshinol, and hydroxysafflor yellow A (FTA) in GX II/rat serum after the oral administration of GX II (30 g/kg) were detected using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Totally 18 rats were randomly assigned to the control group (0.9% normal saline), GX II (30 g/kg) and FTA (5, 28 and 77 mg/kg) by random number table method. Diastolic coronary flow velocity-time integral (VTI), i.e., coronary flow or coronary flow-mediated dilation (CFMD), and endothelium-intact vascular tension of isolated aortic rings were measured. After 12 h of exposure to blank medium or 0.5 mmol/L H2O2, endothelial cells (ECs) were treated with post-dose GX II of supernatant from deproteinized serum (PGSDS, 300 µL PGSDS per 1 mL of culture medium) or FTA (237, 1539, and 1510 mg/mL) for 10 min as control, H2O2, PGSDS and FTA groups. Nitric oxide (NO), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), endothelin-1 (ET-1), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) and phosphorylated phosphoinositide 3 kinase (p-PI3K), phosphorylated protein kinase B (p-AKT), phosphorylated endothelial nitric oxide synthase (p-eNOS) were analyzed. PGSDS was developed as a GX II proxy of ex vivo herbal crude extracts. RESULTS: PGSDS effectively eliminates false responses caused by crude GX II preparations. When doses equaled the contents in GX II/its post-dose serum, FTA accounted for 98.17% of GX II -added CFMD and 92.99% of PGSDS-reduced vascular tension. In ECs, FTA/PGSDS was found to have significant antioxidant (lower MDA and higher SOD, P<0.01) and endothelial function-protective (lower VEGF, ET-1, P<0.01) effects. The increases in aortic relaxation, endothelial NO levels and phosphorylated PI3K/Akt/eNOS protein induced by FTA/PGSDS were markedly abolished by NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NA, eNOS inhibitor) and wortmannin (PI3K/AKT inhibitor), respectively, indicating an endothelium-dependent vasodilation via the PI3K/AKT-eNOS pathway (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: This study provides a strategy for rapidly and precisely elucidating GX II's representative in/ex vivo cardioprotective absorbed bioactive compounds (ABCs)-FTA, suggesting its potential in advancing precision ethnomedicine.

The 21st century is a highly information-driven era, and traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) pharmacy is also moving towards digitization and informatization. New technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data with information technology as the core are being integrated into various aspects of drug research, manufacturing, evaluation, and application, promoting interaction between these stages and improving the quality and efficiency of TCM preparations. This, in turn, provides better healthcare services to the general population. The deep integration of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing with the TCM pharmaceutical industry will innovate TCM pharmaceutical technology, accelerate the research and industrialization process of TCM pharmacy, provide cutting-edge technological support to the global scientific community, boost the efficiency of the TCM industry, and promote economic and social development. Drawing from recent developments in TCM pharmacy in China, this paper discussed the current research status and future trends in digital TCM pharmacy, aiming to provide a reference for future research in this field.

Purpose: To conduct a real-world evaluation of the efficacy and safety of combined Chinese and Western medicine in treating knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Methods: A multicenter, prospective cohort study design was employed, enrolling 450 KOA patients (Kellgren-Lawrence score of 3 or less). The patients were divided into a Western medicine treatment group (WM group) and a combined Western and traditional Chinese medicine treatment group (WM-CM group). A 6-week treatment plan was administered, and follow-up visits occurred at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 6 weeks after initiating treatment. The primary outcome indicator was the total Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) score after 6 weeks of treatment. Secondary outcome indicators included WOMAC subscales for pain, stiffness, and joint function, visual analogue scale (VAS) score, physical component summary (PCS), mental component summary (MCS), and clinical effectiveness. The incidence of drug-related adverse events was used as a safety evaluation indicator. Results: A total of 419 patients were included in the final analysis: 98 in the WM group and 321 in the WM-CM group. The baseline characteristics of the two groups were comparable, except for the incidence of stiffness symptoms and stiffness scores. After 6 weeks of treatment, the WM-CM group exhibited superior results to the WM group in improving the total WOMAC score (24.71 ± 1.38 vs. 16.36 ± 0.62, p < 0.001). The WM-CM group also outperformed the WM group in WOMAC pain and joint function scores, VAS score, PCS score, MCS score, and clinical effectiveness (p < 0.05), which was consistent with the findings of the main evaluation index. Subgroup analysis indicated that the combined Chinese and Western medicine treatment showed more pronounced benefits in patients under 65 years of age and in those with a Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) classification of 0-I. Throughout the study, no adverse effects were observed in either group. Conclusion: The combination of Chinese and Western medicine demonstrated superiority over Western medicine alone in relieving knee pain symptoms, improving knee function, and enhancing the quality of life for KOA patients with a K-L score of 3 or less. Background and aim: Sepsis causes an uncontrolled systemic response characterized by excessive inflammation and immune suppression, leading to multiple organ failure and death. An effective therapeutic strategy for sepsis-related syndromes is urgently needed. Hypericum sampsonii Hance (HS) is a folk herbal plant used to treat arthritis and dermatitis, but the anti-inflammatory properties of HS and its related compounds have rarely been investigated. In this study, we aimed to explore the anti-inflammatory effects of HS. Experimental procedure: Models of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced activated macrophages and endotoxemia mice were used, in which the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway is upregulated to trigger inflammatory responses. The HS extract (HSE) was delivered into LPS-induced endotoxemia mice via oral administration. Three compounds were purified using column chromatography and preparative thin layer chromatography and were validated by physical and spectroscopic data. Results: HSE suppressed NF-κB activation and proinflammatory molecules (TNF-α, IL-6, iNOS) in LPS-activated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Furthermore, oral administration of HSE (200 mg/kg) to LPS-treated mice improved the survival rate, restored body temperature, decreased TNF-α and IL-6 in serum, and reduced IL-6 expression in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). In lung tissues, HSE reduced LPS-induced leukocyte infiltration and the expression of proinflammatory molecules (TNF-α, IL-6, iNOS, CCL4 and CCL5). Three pure compounds isolated from HSE, including 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzophenone-4-O-geranyl ether, 1-hydroxy-7 methoxyxanthone and euxanthone, were demonstrated to exhibit anti-inflammatory activities in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated the anti-inflammatory effects of HS in vitro and in vivo. Further clinical studies of HS in human sepsis are warranted.

Stingless bee honey (SBH) is a natural, sweet product produced by stingless bees (Meliponini tribe) that has been used as a traditional medicine to treat various illnesses. It has been shown that SBH has high nutritional value and health-promoting properties due to the presence of plant bioactive compounds from different botanical flora of the foraged nectar. In this study, the antioxidant activities of seven monofloral honeys from acacia, agarwood, coconut, dwarf mountain pine (DMP), Mexican creeper (MC), rubber, and starfruit botanical origins were investigated. The antioxidant properties of SBH studied had a range from 19.7 to 31.4 mM TE/mg for DPPH assays, 16.1 to 29.9 mM TE/mg for ABTS assays, 69.0 to 167.6 mM TE/mg for ORAC assays, and 45.5 to 89.3 mM Fe2+/mg for FRAP assays. Acacia honey showed the highest level of antioxidant properties. The models built from mass spectral fingerprints from direct ambient mass spectrometry showed distinct clusters of SBH by botanical origin and correlated with the antioxidant properties. An untargeted liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) metabolomics approach was undertaken to identify the antioxidant compounds that could explain the unique antioxidant and compositional profiles of the monofloral SBH by its botanical origin. The antioxidants that were identified predominantly consisted of alkaloids and flavonoids. Flavonoid derivatives, which are potent antioxidants, were found to be key markers of acacia honey. This work provides the fundamental basis for the identification of potential antioxidant markers in SBH associated with the botanical origin of the foraged nectar.

Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) is a metalloenzyme with a type III copper core that is abundant in nature. As one of the most essential enzymes in the tea plant (Camellia sinensis), the further regulation of PPO is critical for enhancing defensive responses, cultivating high-quality germplasm resources of tea plants, and producing tea products that are both functional and sensory qualities. Due to their physiological and pharmacological values, the constituents from the oxidative polymerization of PPO in tea manufacturing may serve as functional foods to prevent and treat chronic non-communicable diseases. However, current knowledge of the utilization of PPO in the tea industry is only available from scattered sources, and a more comprehensive study is required to reveal the relationship between PPO and tea obviously. A more comprehensive review of the role of PPO in tea was reported for the first time, as its classification, catalytic mechanism, and utilization in modulating tea flavors, compositions, and nutrition, along with the relationships between PPO-mediated enzymatic reactions and the formation of functional constituents in tea, and the techniques for the modification and application of PPO based on modern enzymology and synthetic biology are summarized and suggested in this article.

Bupleuri Radix is commonly used in the traditional Chinese medicine, and saikosaponins are the important active ingredients. In this study, we first established a relative quantitative method for 25 saikosaponins using ultra high performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTrap-MS) in the scheduled multiple reaction monitoring (sMRM) mode. The established method showed good intra-day and intra-day precision, linearity, repeatability and stability. Then the method was applied to compare 37 batches of Bupleuri Radix from different planting areas. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the saikosaponins composition of Bupleuri Radix from different planting areas in Shanxi Province, which indicating that Bupleuri Radix is well adapted to the environment, so it is suitable for widely planting. However, Bupleuri Radix harvested at spring and autumn were differed from those harvested at summer, which indicated that the traditional harvesting experience was reasonable. Correlation analysis showed that saikosaponins a and d were positively correlated with some saponins, and 4 saponins (such as clinoposaponin XII) showed bigger content variation were identified by coefficient of variation analysis. The LC-MS based pseudotargeted metabonomic method established in this study can be applied to the comprehensive detection of saikosaponins, which providing new method for the quality evaluation of Bupleuri Radix.

Depression is the most common mental problem among the elderly, especially in long-term care facilities. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of group music intervention on depression for elderly people in nursing homes. Methods: A randomized control trial consisting of sixty-three elderly participants randomly and blindly assigned to a music group or control group was utilized. The music group received 20 sessions of group music intervention (two 30-min sessions per week for 10 weeks), and the control group received usual care with no music intervention. The Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form (GDS-SF) and salivary cortisol at baseline, 5 weeks, and 10 weeks were collected for analysis. Results of the GEEs (generalized estimating equations) analysis indicated that after 20 sessions for 10 weeks of group music intervention, the groups showed a statistically significant difference in depression at 5 weeks and 10 weeks. There was no significant difference in the salivary cortisol concentration between the two groups. The results show that the group music intervention may effectively reduce the depression scores for elderly people in nursing homes. Conclusion: The group music intervention has positive effects on depression.

Following the preparation of Acanthopanax senticosus total saponins microemulsion, the formulation and preparation technology were optimized and the quality was evaluated. The absorption characteristics of A. senticosus total saponins microemulsion by the self-microemulsifying drug delivery system(SMEDDS) were investigated in the unidirectional intestinal perfusion model in vivo. The oil phase, mass ratio(K_m), number of revolutions, and drug concentration were subjected to single-factor investigation with the area of pseudo-ternary phase diagram as the index. The process was optimized by D-optimal mixture design with the particle size as the index, and then the appearance, morphology, and particle size were investigated. The mass concentrations of eleutherosides B and E in the microemulsion were determined. The results showed that the optimum formulation of A. senticosus total saponins microemulsion was determined as follows: 20.8% of water phase, 31.2% of isopropyl palmitate, and 48.0% of soybean phospholipid and absolute ethanol(K_m=1∶1). As revealed by the observation under a transmission electron microscope, the microemulsion exhibited homogeneous dispersion and was a spherical emulsion droplet in the water-in-oil type. At room temperature, the pH value was 5.19, the refractive index 1.416 5, the average particle size(26.47±0.04)nm, and the polydispersity index(PDI) 0.118±0.03. The content of the eleutherosides B and E was 0.038 9 and 0.166 4 mg·mL~(-1), respectively. The preliminary stability study showed that the solution was clear and transparent within 30 d, without stratification or content change, indicating good stability. The absorption of microemulsion in each intestinal segment was significantly improved as compared with that of the A. senticosus total saponins, with the best absorption effect detected in the ileum, which has laid a foundation for further development and utilization of A. senticosus.

Synthesized cerium oxide nanoparticles (S-CeO2 NPs) and 1%, 5% and 10% zirconium doped CeO2 (Zr-doped CeO2) NPs were fabricated using aqueous leaf extract of Pometia pinnata. The synthesized NPs were characterized using standard techniques which confirmed successful synthesis of NPs with particle size ranging from 12 to 23 nm and band gap energy of 2.54-2.66 eV. Photoantioxidant activities showed enhanced activities under visible light irradiation in comparison to the dark condition in the dose-dependent study. Biofilm inhibition studies showed ~ 73% biofilm inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus at 512 µg/mL for S-CeO2, whereas 10% Zr-doped CeO2 NPs showed biofilm inhibition of 52.7%. The bactericidal tests showed killing properties at 1024 µg/mL of S-CeO2 NPs and at 512 µg/mL of 1% Zr-doped CeO2. Reduced bactericidal activities were observed for 5% and 10% Zr-doped CeO2. These studies showed that the fabricated NPs have both good photoantioxidant and antibacterial properties.

Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) are a sought-after material in numerous fields due to their potential applications such as in catalysis, cancer therapy, photocatalytic degradation of pollutants, sensors, polishing agents. Green synthesis usually involves the production of CeO2 assisted by organic extracts obtained from plants, leaves, flowers, bacteria, algae, food, fruits, etc. The phytochemicals present in the organic extracts adhere to the NPs and act as reducing and/or oxidizing agents and capping agents to stabilize the NPs, modify the particle size, morphology and band gap energy of the as-synthesized materials, which would be advantageous for numerous applications. This review focuses on the green extract-mediated synthesis of CeO2 NPs and discusses the effects on CeO2 NPs of various synthesis methods that have been reported. Several photocatalytic, antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxicity applications have been evaluated, compared and discussed. Future prospects are also suggested.

Cerium oxide (CeO2) and 1%, 5% and 10% zirconium/tin-dual doped CeO2 nanoparticles (Zr/Sn-dual doped CeO2 NPs) were synthesized using an aqueous leaf extract of Pometia pinnata. By using UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, the band gap energies of these materials were found to be in the range of ∼2.49 to 2.66 eV. The average crystallite sizes of the fluorite phase obtained from X-ray diffraction were between 7 and 16 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis further confirmed the synthesis of CeO2 and Sn-doped CeO2 NPs. Almost spherical shapes of the nanomaterials with an average particle size of 12-17 nm were determined using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy studies. Photoantioxidant activities of the synthesized materials showed enhanced photoantioxidant response under visible light irradiation in comparison with those under dark conditions in both dose- and time-dependent manner. The CeO2 NPs exhibited a significant concentration-dependent antibiofilm activity against the Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes). Only the 10% Zr/Sn-dual doped-CeO2 NPs were found to inhibit S. aureus biofilm formation at higher concentrations. All Zr/Sn-dual doped CeO2 NPs exhibited a concentration-dependent biofilm inhibition of L. monocytogenes and also bactericidal activity towards S. aureus. These nanomaterials exhibited enhanced photoantioxidant activities and antibacterial properties, which make them suitable for various biological applications.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are considered as very significant and essential material due to its multifunctional properties, stability, low cost and wide usage. Many green and biogenic approaches for ZnO NPs synthesis have been reported using various sources such as plants and microorganisms. Plants contain biomolecules that can act as capping, oxidizing and reducing agents that increase the rate of reaction and stabilizes the NPs. This review emphasizes and compiles different types of plants and parts of plant used for the synthesis of ZnO and its potential applications at one place. The influence of biogenic and phytogenic synthesized ZnO on its properties and possible mechanisms for its fabrication has been discussed. This review also highlights the potential applications and future prospects of phytogenic synthesized ZnO in the field of energy production and storage, sun light harvesting, environmental remediation, and biological applications.

Aqueous leaf extract of Ziziphus mauritiana Lam. was successfully used to synthesize zinc oxide (ZnO) and magnesium-doped ZnO (Mg-doped ZnO) particles and acted as capping and stabilizing agent. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra showed that optical band gap energy of ZnO has narrowed from 3.11 to 3.08 eV and 3.03 eV when doped with 1% Mg and 5% Mg, respectively. Powder X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies confirmed the purity and crystalline nature of the synthesized materials. FT-IR spectroscopy revealed the presence of phytochemicals coated on the surface of synthesized materials. The synthesized materials were found to effectively scavenge DPPH radicals in the presence of visible light in comparison to the dark. The antibacterial properties of the synthesized materials were evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The obtained results revealed that Staphylococcus aureus seemed to be more sensitive to the green synthesized ZnO and Mg-doped ZnO than Escherichia coli.

Bereavement, the experience of losing a loved one, is one of the most catastrophic but inevitable events in life. It causes grief and intense depression-like sadness. Recent studies have revealed the effectiveness and proficiency of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) in emotional regulation among bereavement populations. MBCT improves the well-being of the bereaved by enhancing cognitive performances. Regarding the neural correlates of bereavement grief, previous studies focused on the alleviation of emotion-cognition interferences at specific brain regions. Here, we hypothesized that the bereavement grief fundamentally triggers global alterations in the resting-state brain networks and part of the internetwork connectivity could be reformed after MBCT intervention. We recruited 19 bereaved individuals who participated the 8-week MBCT program. We evaluated (a) the large-scale changes in brain connectivity affected by the MBCT program; as well as (b) the association between connectivity changes and self-rated questionnaire. First, after MBCT, the bereaved individuals showed the reduction of the internetwork connectivity in the salience, default-mode and fronto-parietal networks in the resting state but not under emotional arousal, implying the alleviated attention to spontaneous mind wandering after MBCT. Second, the alterations of functional connectivity between subcortical (e.g., caudate) and cortical networks (e.g., cingulo-opercular/sensorimotor) were associated with the changes of the mindfulness scale, the anxiety and the emotion regulation ability. In summary, MBCT could enhance spontaneous emotion regulation among the bereaved individuals through the internetwork reorganizations in the resting state.

Exessive drinking is commonly associated with a wide spectrum of liver injuries. The term alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is generally used to refer to this spectrum of hepatic abnormalities, and the term hepatic steatosis denotes early lesions. Puerariae Lobatae Radix (PLR) is a common traditional Chinese medicine and has been widely used as an efficient treatment for alcohol-induced damage. Flavonoids are the principal components of PLR that could potentially be responsible for the activation of alcohol metabolism and lipid-lowering effects. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying their activity against alcoholic injury. In this study, PLR flavonoids (PLF) were obtained by microwave extraction. A 2% ethanol solution was used to establish a model of alcoholic fatty liver disease by exposure of zebrafish larvae for 32 h, and then the zebrafish were administered PLF and puerarin. The results showed that PLF and puerarin significantly decreased lipid accumulation and the levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides in zebrafish larvae. Moreover, PLF and puerarin downregulated the expression of genes related to alcohol and lipid metabolism (CYP2y3, CYP3a65, ADH8a, ADH8b, HMGCRB, and FASN), endoplasmic reticulum stress, and DNA damage (CHOP, EDEM1, GADD45αa, and ATF6) and reduced levels of inflammatory factors (IL-1ß, TNF-α) in zebrafish larvae. PLF and puerarin increased the phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase-α (AMPKα) and decreased the total protein level of ACC1. The findings suggested that PLF and puerarin alleviated alcohol-induced hepatic steatosis in zebrafish larvae by regulating alcohol and lipid metabolism, which was closely related to the regulation of the AMPKα-ACC signaling pathway. In conclusion, the study provided a possible therapeutic drug for ALD treatment.

Amid controversial reports that COVID-19 can be treated with a combination of the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and the antibiotic azithromycin (AZI), a clinical trial (ONCOCOVID, NCT04341207) was launched at Gustave Roussy Cancer Campus to investigate the utility of this combination therapy in cancer patients. In this preclinical study, we investigated whether the combination of HCQ+AZI would be compatible with the therapeutic induction of anticancer immune responses. For this, we used doses of HCQ and AZI that affect whole-body physiology (as indicated by a partial blockade in cardiac and hepatic autophagic flux for HCQ and a reduction in body weight for AZI), showing that their combined administration did not interfere with tumor growth control induced by the immunogenic cell death inducer oxaliplatin. Moreover, the HCQ+AZI combination did not affect the capacity of a curative regimen (cisplatin + crizotinib + PD-1 blockade) to eradicate established orthotopic lung cancers in mice. In conclusion, it appears that HCQ+AZI does not interfere with the therapeutic induction of therapeutic anticancer immune responses.

Superior oil yield is always the top priority of the oil palm industry. Short trunk height (THT) and compactness traits have become increasingly important to improve harvesting efficiency since the industry started to suffer yield losses due to labor shortages. Breeding populations with low THT and short frond length (FL) are actually available, such as Dumpy AVROS pisifera (DAV) and Gunung Melayu dura (GM). However, multiple trait stacking still remains a challenge for oil palm breeding, which usually requires 12-20 years to complete a breeding cycle. In this study, yield and height increment in the GM × GM (GM-3341) and the GM × DAV (GM-DAV-3461) crossing programs were evaluated and palms with good yield and smaller height increment were identified. In the GM-3341 family, non-linear THT growth between THT_2008 (seven years old) and THT_2014 (13 years old) was revealed by a moderate correlation, suggesting that inter-palm competition becomes increasingly important. In total, 19 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for THT_2008 (8), oil per palm (O/P) (7) and FL (4) were localized on the GM-3341 linkage map, with an average mapping interval of 2.01 cM. Three major QTLs for THT_2008, O/P and FL are co-located on chromosome 11 and reflect the correlation of THT_2008 with O/P and FL. Multiple trait selection for high O/P and low THT (based on the cumulative effects of positive alleles per trait) identified one palm from 100 palms, but with a large starting population of 1000-1500 seedling per cross, this low frequency could be easily compensated for during breeding selection.

Four types of middle-pressure chromatogram isolated gels are evaluated for adsorption or desorption characteristics of ginsenosides from Panax ginseng. Among them, SP207SS and SP2MGS were selected for dynamic investigations based on their static adsorption or desorption capacity of total ginsenoside. Their adsorption kinetics was better explained by pseudosecond-order model and isotherms were preferably fitted to Langmuir model. Dynamic breakthrough experiments indicated an optimum sample loading speed of 4 bed volume/h for either SP207SS or SP2MGS. Desorption speed was determined to be 2 bed volume/h according to desorption amount of total ginsenoside in their effluents. Eight ginsenosides were identified and quantified by high performance liquid chromatography-triple quadropole-mass spectrometry in total ginsenoside extract and different fractions during stepwise dynamic elution. For SP207SS, 27.62% of loaded ginsenosides was detected in 40% ethanol fraction, while 59.12% of them were found in 60% ethanol fraction. As on SP2MGS, the number went to 53.71 and 44.43%, respectively. Recovery rate of ginsenosides were calculated to 78.65% for SP207SS and 89.53% for SP2MGS, respectively. Intriguingly, content of Rg1 and Re in 40% ethanol fraction from SP207SS became 20.1 and 18.6 times higher than that in total ginsenoside extract by one-step elution, which could be leveraged for the facile enrichment of these two ginsenosides from natural sources.
