RESUMEN

The primary challenge of agriculture and livestock production is to face the growing competition between food, feed, fibre, and fuel, converting them from resource-intensive to resource-efficient. A circular economy approach, using agricultural by-products/co-products, in the livestock production system would allow to reduce, reuse, and redistribute the resources. Former food products (FFPs), also named ex-foods, could represent a valid option in strengthening resilience in animal nutrition. FFPs have a promising potential to be included regularly in animal diets due to their nutritive value, although their potential in animal nutrition remains understudied. A thorough investigation of the compositional and dietary features, thus, is essential to provide new and fundamental insights to effectively reuse FFPs as upgraded products for swine nutrition. Safety aspects, such as the microbial load or the presence of packaging remnants, should be considered with caution. Here, with a holistic approach, we review several aspects of FFPs and their use as feed ingredients: the nutritional and functional evaluation, the impact of the inclusion of FFPs in pigs' diet on growth performance and welfare, and further aspects related to safety and sustainability of FFPs.

Genetic selection for increased sow prolificacy has resulted in decreased mean piglet birth-weight. This study aimed to investigate the effect of L-carnitine (CAR) supplementation to sows during gestation and/or lactation on sow productivity, semitendinosus muscle (STM) maturity, and lifetime growth in progeny. Sixty-four sows were randomly assigned to one of four dietary treatments at breeding until weaning; CONTROL (0mg CAR/d), GEST (125mg CAR/d during gestation), LACT (250mg CAR/d during lactation), and BOTH (125mg CAR/d during gestation & 250mg CAR/d during lactation). The total number of piglets born per litter was greater for sows supplemented with CAR during gestation (17.3 v 15.8 ± 0.52; P<0.05). Piglet birth-weight (total and live) was unaffected by sow treatment (P>0.05). Total myofibre number (P=0.08) and the expression level of selected myosin heavy chain genes in the STM (P<0.05) was greater in piglets of sows supplemented with CAR during gestation. Pigs from sows supplemented with CAR during gestation had lighter carcasses at slaughter than pigs from non-supplemented sows during gestation (83.8 v 86.7 ± 0.86kg; P<0.05). In conclusion, CAR supplementation during gestation increased litter size at birth without compromising piglet birth-weight. Results also showed that the STM of piglets born to sows supplemented with CAR during gestation was more developed at birth. However, carcass weight at slaughter was reduced in progeny of sows supplemented with CAR during gestation. The CAR supplementation strategy applied during gestation in this study could be utilized by commercial pork producers to increase sow litter size and improve offspring muscle development.

The development of alternatives to antibiotics is crucial to limiting the incidence of antimicrobial resistance, especially in prophylactic and metaphylactic use to control post-weaning diarrhea (PWD). Feed additives, including bioactive compounds, could be a promising alternative. This study aimed to test two bioactive compounds, sodium salicylate (SA) and a chestnut extract (CE) containing hydrolysable tannins, on the occurrence of PWD. At weaning, 72 piglets were assigned to four treatments that combined two factors: CE supplementation (with 2% of CE (CE+) or without (CE-)) and SA supplementation (with 35 mg/kg BW of SA (SA+) or without (SA-)). Then, 4 days after weaning, all piglets were infected with a suspension at 108 CFU/ml of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC F4ac). Each piglet had free access to an electrolyte solution containing, or not, SA. This SA supplementation was administered for 5 days (i.e., from the day of infection (day 0) to 4 days post-infection (day 4). During the 2 weeks post-infection, supplementation with SA had no effect (P > 0.05) on growth performances nor on fecal scores. A significant SA × time interaction (P < 0.01) for fecal scores and the percentage of diarrhea indicated that piglets with SA did not recover faster and did have a second episode of diarrhea. In contrast to SA treatment, inclusion of CE increased (P < 0.05) growth performances and feed intake. In the first week post-infection, CE decreased (P < 0.001) the overall fecal scores, the percentage of piglets with diarrhea, the days in diarrhea, and ETEC shedding in the feces. There was a SA×CE interaction (P < 0.05) for ETEC shedding, suggesting a negative effect of combining SA with CE. This study highlighted that, in contrast to SA, CE could represent a promising alternative to antibiotics immediately after weaning for improving growth performance and reducing PWD.

Lightweight (LW) piglets from large litters display impaired growth performance compared with heavier littermates. This study investigated the growth performance and muscle development of early-weaned LW piglets (birthweight <1.2 kg) from large litters (17.3 ± 3.0 total born per litter), fed ad libitum a milk replacer supplemented with either l-carnitine (CAR) or l-arginine (ARG) from day 7 to day 28 of age. In total, 36 female and entire male Swiss Large White piglets, weaned on day 7 of age, were artificially reared in pairs in rescue decks. They were allocated to one of three dietary treatments: unsupplemented control (CON), 0.48 g l-carnitine·piglet-1 ·day-1 (CAR) or 1.20 g l-arginine·kg body weight-1 ·day-1 (ARG). Milk replacer was prepared daily in a 1:4 powder-to-water ratio and fed ad libitum. Piglets were weighed at birth and on days 7, 14, 21 and 28. Feed intake was assessed daily. Piglets were euthanized on day 28. The entire semitendinosus muscle (STM) was collected, and organs were weighed. Subsequently, the STM was divided into the light (STMl ) and dark (STMd ) portion, and contractile and metabolic traits were analysed by ATP histochemistry, enzyme activities and gene expression. No differences in growth performance, organ and STM weight and on contractile traits were found between groups. A tendency (p < .10) for an elevated lipid oxidation enzyme activity in the STMl and STMd and greater (p < .05) phosphorylation of the mammalian target of rapamycin pathway in the STMl of CAR compared with CON piglets was found. Despite these metabolic responses, the lack of effect of CAR and ARG supplementation on growth performance suggests that providing the milk replacer ad libitum in combination with added CAR and ARG is insufficient for eliciting faster growth of LW piglets.

As a result of the selection for genotypes with greater sow prolificacy, litter size increased and, concomitantly, average litter birth weight and early postnatal survival rates of low birth weight (L-BtW) offspring decreased. This study compared the impact of l-carnitine (CAR) and l-arginine (ARG) supplemented with a milk replacer and fed to L-BtW piglets born from large litters from days 7 to 28 of age on growth performance, carcass composition, organ and Semitendinosus muscle (STM) development. A total of 30 female and castrated Swiss Large White piglets weaned at 7 days of age were assigned to three milk replacer diets containing either no supplement (CON), CAR (0.40 g/piglet per day) or ARG (1.08 g/kg BW per day). Piglets were kept in pairs in rescue decks (0.54 m2). They were weighed daily and daily allowance of both, feed and ARG, was adjusted accordingly. Thus, feed allowance depended on growth. Each day, the milk replacer was prepared with water (1:4). Feed (allowance: 60 g dry matter/kg BW per day) was offered daily in six equal rations. Feed intake and feed efficiency was assessed for the pairs and apparent total tract-energy and -protein digestibility was determined from days 21 to 28 of age. On day 28, piglets were euthanized, blood samples were collected and the whole STM and organs were weighed. In STM, the size and metabolic properties of myofibers were determined. No difference in growth performance was found between dietary treatments, but piglets from the CAR group tended (P<0.10) to grow faster during the 1st experimental week and consume more feed from days 14 to 21 as compared with piglets of the CON group. A setback in growth in the last week in the CAR group coincided with the lower (P<0.05) energy and protein digestibility. Dietary treatments had no effect on STM and organ weight and myofiber size. Compared with the other groups, there were trends (P<0.10) for blood serum urea and glucose level to be greater in CAR and for non-esterified fatty acid level to be greater in ARG piglets. The greater (P<0.05) ratio of lactate dehydrogenase to either citrate synthase or ß-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase indicated that the relative importance of the glycolytic compared with the oxidative pathway was greater in STM of CAR and ARG compared with CON piglets. These results suggest that ARG and CAR supplements were beneficial for muscle maturation whereas findings on phenotypic traits were rather unsystematic.

In this study, we investigated the effects of maternal gestation and/or lactation diets supplemented with extruded linseed (rich in 18:3n-3) on growth performance and long-chain polyunsaturated faaty acid (PUFA) accumulation in muscle tissues of suckling lambs. A total of 36 dairy ewes were fed a control diet (CON) and a diet containing linseed (LIN) during the last 8 weeks of gestation and/or the first 4 weeks of lactation. The four dietary treatments consisted of the following gestation/lactation feeding treatments: CON/CON, CON/LIN, LIN/LIN or LIN/CON. The lambs born from ewes fed the aforementioned diets were reared exclusively on milk and were slaughtered at 4 weeks of age. Profiles of ewes' milk fatty acids and that of intramuscular fat (IMF) of leg muscles from lambs were determined. Compared with the CON/CON, LIN/CON offspring tended to grow slower and to have reduced cold carcass weights. Moreover, the LIN supplementation only in the prepartum period (LIN/CON) resulted in greater PUFAn-3 accumulation in the IMF compared with the CON/CON offspring due to increased 20:5n-3 (1.20 v. 0.64 mg/100 mg of total FA), 22:5n-3 (1.91 v. 1.46;) and 22:6n-3 (1.25 v. 0.89) contents, respectively. Compared with the CON/CON diet, providing LIN only during lactation (CON/LIN) caused a greater PUFAn-3 content in the IMF mainly due to a greater 18:3n-3 (1.79 v. 0.75 mg/100 g total FA) concentration. Continuous PUFAn-3 exposure, both via the maternal gestation and lactation diet, had no additive effects on PUFAn-3 accumulation in tissues. The results suggest that linseed, as an 18:3n-3 source, seems to be more efficient in increasing long-chain PUFAn-3 in fetal than in suckling lamb tissues.

An experiment was conducted to compare the effect of the same amount of 18:2 offered either as 18:2n-6 or as a mixture of unprotected 18:2c9t11 and 18:2t10c12 on feed intake, milk components as well as plasma and milk fatty acid profile. Fifteen cows were blocked by milk yield and milk fat percentage and within block assigned randomly to 1 of 3 treatments (n = 5). Each cow passed a 12-d adjustment period (AP) on a basal diet. After the AP cows received 1 of 3 supplements during an 18-d experimental period (EP). The supplements contained either 1.0 kg ground sunflower seeds (S), 0.5 kg conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)-oil (C) or 0.75 kg of a mixture of ground sunflower seeds and CLA-oil (2:1; SC). All 3 supplements contained the same amount of 18:2 either as CLA (∑18:2c9t11+18:2t10c12, 1:1) or as 18:2c9c12. During the last 2 d of AP and the last 4 d of EP feed intake and milk yield were recorded daily and milk samples were collected at each milking. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein on d 11 of AP and d 15 and 18 of EP. The 18:2 intake increased in all treatments from AP to EP. Regardless of the amount of supplemented CLA, the milk fat percentage decreased by 2.35 and 2.10%-units in treatment C and SC, respectively, whereas in the treatment S the decrease was with 0.99%-unit less pronounced. Thus, C and SC cows excreted daily a lower amount of milk fat than S cows. The concentration of trans 18:1 in the plasma and the milk increased from AP to EP and increased with increasing dietary CLA supply. While the concentration of 18:2c9t11 and 18:2t10c12 in the plasma and that of 18:2t10c12 in the milk paralleled dietary supply, the level of 18:2c9t11 in the milk was similar in C and CS but still lower in S. Although the dietary concentration of CLA was highest in treatment C, the partial replacement of CLA by sunflower seeds had a similar inhibitory effect on milk fat synthesis. Comparable 18:2c9t11 levels in the milk in both CLA treatments implies that this isomer is subjected to greater biohydrogenation with increasing supply than 18:2t10c12. The fact that unprotected 18:2t10c12 escaped biohydrogenation in sufficient amounts to affect milk fat synthesis reveals opportunities to develop feeding strategies where reduced milk fat production is desirable or required by the metabolic state of the cow.

Intra-uterine growth retardation in piglets is associated to neonatal losses and a greater susceptibility to fat deposition in the long term. Dietary l-arginine supplementation to gilts during early gestation has been proposed as a way to enhance fetal survival. This study aims to investigate the effects of variation in fetal growth within litters and dietary l-arginine treatment during early gestation in pregnant sows on expression levels of several genes involved in early adipose tissue development and lipid deposition in the fetuses. At day 75 of pregnancy, sows fed a standard gestation diet throughout pregnancy and sows fed 26g L-arginine daily from days 14 to 28 of gestation in supplement to the standard diet were sacrificed. Six pairs of littermates in each dietary group with the smallest or the heaviest fetal weights within each litter were collected (total: 24 fetuses). Expression levels of DLK1/PREF1 and FZD7 were significantly greater in subcutaneous backfat of the smallest fetuses. Conversely, transcriptional adipogenic regulators PPARG, SREBP1, and CEBPA, and genes involved in terminal adipocytic differentiation LPL, ME1, and FABP4 were less expressed in those piglets. Fetal weight has no effect on expression levels of genes involved in cell cycle progression and DNA content in subcutaneous adipose tissue. Maternal dietary L-arginine treatment did not affect subcutaneous adipose tissue features in 75-day old fetuses. The gene expression changes observed in the smallest fetuses are likely associated to a lower body fat content at birth, and could predispose to catch-up fat growth during the postnatal period.

The effects of l-arginine on porcine foetal development and myogenesis were determined. Twenty Swiss Large White gilts were randomly allocated to either the control (C) or l-arginine treatment (A). In addition to the standard gestation diet, A-sows received 26 g l-arginine daily from days 14 to 28 of gestation. At day 75 of pregnancy, sows were sacrificed and the number and weight of foetuses were recorded. From each litter, the lightest, heaviest and the ones with an average foetal weight (FtW) were selected. Primary (P), secondary (S) and total myofiber number as well as S/P ratio were determined in the semitendinosus (ST) and rhomboideus (RH) muscles. In A-sows, the number of viable foetuses (13.0 v. 9.3) and total FtW (4925 v. 3729 g) was greater (P ⩽ 0.04) than in C-sows. Compared to C-sow foetuses, the ST of A-sow foetuses had 7% more (17 699 v. 16 477; P = 0.04) P myofibers and the S/P ratio in both muscles was lower (ST = 20.3 v. 21.5; RH = 24.1 v. 27.1; P ⩽ 0.07). Regardless of the maternal diet, the S myofiber number and the S/P ratio in both muscles were greater (P ⩽ 0.01) in foetuses with a high FtW compared to low FtW. These data suggest that l-arginine supplemented to gilts during early gestation enhanced foetal survival and in the ST positively affected the primary phase of myofiber formation.

Forty Large White barrows were used to determine whether the effects of dietary fat source (tallow or soy oil at 5% of the diet) on lipogenesis and fatty acid profile of porcine adipose and lean tissue were dependent on dietary digestible energy density (8.8 vs 14.0 MJ DE/kg). Barrows were allocated to one of four groups and offered a fixed amount of feed (170 g x BW0.569/d) from 27 to 105 kg BW. The fatty acid composition of the backfat layers (BF), omental fat (OF), and i.m. adipose tissue of longissimus muscle as well as the activity of lipogenic enzymes of the adipose tissues were determined. Growth performance and carcass characteristics were affected by the dietary energy level (P < 0.01) but not by fat source. In accordance with the lower carcass fat deposition, the activity of lipogenic enzymes were decreased in the low-energy groups (P < 0.01). Within dietary energy level, inclusion of soy oil resulted in increased proportion of PUFA that was compensated by decreased saturated (SFA) and monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) proportions (P < 0.01). The SFA changes accounted for 23 (BF) and 24% (OF) of the PUFA changes in the high-energy and 31 (BF) and 39% (OF) in the low-energy diets. The differences in the fatty acid proportions between the soy oil and tallow group were more pronounced in the low-energy groups (fat source x energy density interactions: P < 0.01). Pigs fed the soy oil, low-energy diet had decreased SFA (BF: 28%; OF: 30%) and MUFA (BF: 13%; OF: 19%) concentration, whereas PUFA concentration was increased (BF: 59%; OF: 88%) compared with pigs fed the soy oil, high-energy diet. However, in the tallow groups, pigs fed the low-energy diets had slightly decreased SFA (BF: 14%; OF: 12%) and relatively constant MUFA (BF: 3%; OF: 1%), whereas PUFA concentration increased (BF: 39%; OF: 62%) relative to pigs fed the tallow high-energy diet. Lipid content of the i.m. adipose tissue was decreased in the low-energy groups (P < 0.05). Contrary to what was observed in the adipose tissues, increased PUFA concentration in the neutral and polar lipid fractions of the longissimus muscle was predominantly compensated by reduced MUFA deposition. In the polar lipid fraction, the proportions of both SFA and MUFA were decreased by the low-energy diet. Thus, the extent to which tissue concentration of fatty acids are altered from dietary fats differing in the degree of unsaturation depends on the dietary energy level.

We evaluated the effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on growth performance, tissue fatty acid composition and ex vivo lipogenic enzyme activity in piglets (n = 40) reared on sows fed diets supplemented with CLA or linoleic acid (LA). Weaned offspring of both sow groups were offered either a CLA- or LA-enriched starter diet for 35 d. The starter diets were formulated to contain 2 g CLA (containing 58.9 g CLA/100 g total fatty acids) or LA per 100 g feed. All piglets were slaughtered at 70 d of age and tissue samples of the back fat, omental fat and longissimus dorsi were collected. Irrespective of the dietary fat supplied in the starter period, piglets reared on the CLA sows had greater final body and warm carcass weights (P: < 0.01), and greater feed intake (P: = 0.02) than piglets reared on the LA sows. The dietary effect on the fatty acid composition was similar for the adipose and muscle tissues. Compared with the LA-enriched diets, CLA increased the level of total saturated fatty acids (P: < 0.05), whereas that of monounsaturated fatty acids was decreased (P: < 0.05). Dietary CLA increased glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (P: < 0.01) and malic enzyme activities (P: < 0.06) in the fat tissues, but did not affect fatty acid synthase activity. The shift toward a higher deposition of saturated fatty acids and a lower deposition of monounsaturated fatty acids is the result of down-regulation of Delta9-desaturase activity that was induced by CLA rather than an altered rate of de novo synthesis.

Conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) have been shown to affect fatty acid synthesis in various tissues. The objective of the study was to compare the effect of a commercial source of CLA with a linoleic acid-enriched oil (LA), supplied to 12 multiparous sows during gestation and lactation, on adipose tissue and milk fatty acid composition. The CLA isomers detected in the CLA oil were (in order of magnitude) c9,t11; t10,c12; c9,c11; t9,t11/t10,t12 and c10,c12 and amounted to 58.9 g/100 g fat. Biopsies were taken from the backfat on d 7 and 97 of gestation and milk samples were collected on d 2, 9, 16 and 23 after farrowing. Collection of colostrum and mature milk samples took place at 1100 h for sows who farrowed in the morning or at 1500 h for those who farrowed in the afternoon. All major CLA isomers in the supplement were transferred to the tissue and milk fat and, compared with the LA group, significantly increased saturated fatty acid and decreased monounsaturated fatty acid levels in the tissue and milk. These findings suggest a distinct involvement of CLA in the de novo fatty acid synthesis and desaturation process in the adipose tissue and mammary gland. Estimated transfer efficiency of dietary CLA isomers was 41-52% for the backfat and 55-69% for the mature milk. The incorporation and uptake efficiency seemed to be selective with the highest values found for c9,t11-CLA. Overall, dietary CLA supplementation of sows during gestation and lactation markedly altered backfat and milk fatty acid composition.

Forty Swiss Large White pigs (barrows with 31.7 kg initial to 103.7 kg final BW) were equally and randomly assigned to one of four treatments (H0, H200, L0, L200) involving a combination of chromium supplementation (0 or 200 micrograms/kg) and glycemic index (high GI (H) or low GI (L)). Growth performance, energy and protein digestibility, carcass composition, and some plasma traits were investigated. The data indicated, that the substitution of dietary carbohydrates with fat and crude fibre (low GI) resulted in lower growth performance due to impaired energy digestibility. Moreover, the strong stimulation of insulin secretion due to the high and rapid availability of carbohydrates of the diets H0 and H200 caused increased carcass fat deposition. Chromium supplementation also affected plasma insulin and glucagon concentrations. Depending on glycemic index, chromium affected the growth performance. Daily gain was reduced in pigs of the L200 treatment compared to the L0 group. This finding indicated that the energy availability expressed as GI is one of several nutritional factors, which determine the efficacy of dietary chromium. We could not corroborate evidences that dietary chromium modifies the chemical composition of the whole carcass, but depending on GI, chemical composition of the longissimus muscle was affected.
