RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: This cross-sectional study investigated the influence of dietary protein intake (DPI) on serum phosphate levels in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and determined the DPI cutoff required to prevent hyperphosphatemia. METHODS: A total of 504 PD patients were categorized into fast (4 h dialysate/plasma [D/P] creatinine clearance ≥0.65) or slow (<0.65) peritoneal transporters. Serum phosphorus and peritoneal solute clearance were compared between the groups with different DPI. RESULTS: The fast peritoneal transporters (n = 233) were older, had lower serum albumin and phosphorus levels, and had higher peritoneal phosphorus clearance (all p < 0.001). Among the slow transporters (n = 271), serum phosphorus levels were significantly higher among patients with DPI > 1.0 g/kg/d (p < 0.001). High DPI only increased the hyperphosphatemia risk in slow transporters (not in high transporters). DPI ≥1.026 g increased the hyperphosphatemia risk in those patients (area under the curve: 0.66, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: High DPI increases the hyperphosphatemia risk in PD patients with slower peritoneal transport function.

RESUMEN

A novel flower-like phosphorous-doped titanium oxide nanocomposite coating was in situ grown on nickel-titanium alloy (NiTi) fiber by hydrothermal treatment in phosphoric acid solution. The experimental results demonstrated that phosphorous-doped titanium oxide nanoflakes (P-TiONFs) with an average thickness of 80 nm were formed on the NiTi fiber substrate in 0.1 mol L-1 H3PO4 at 150 °C for 6 h. Thereafter, the resulting P-TiONFs were used as SPME fiber coatings for the adsorption of typical aromatic analytes from environmental water samples, which were determined by HPLC-UV. These P-TiONFs exhibited good adsorption selectivity for hydrophobic PAHs. After optimizing microextraction conditions, linear responses were achieved in the ranges of 0.05-200 µg L-1 for the determination of PAHs with determination coefficients higher than 0.999. LODs (S/N = 3) ranged from 0.009 to 0.132 µg L-1, while LOQs (S/N = 10) ranged from 0.030 to 0.441 µg L-1. RSDs for intra-day and inter-day analyses with a single fiber varied from 4.46% to 5.56% and 5.14%-6.75%, respectively. The relative recoveries of 83.60%-119.0% were achieved for the determination of PAHs in real water samples spiked at the concentration levels of 5.0 µg L-1 and 10.0 µg L-1 with RSDs below 7.38%. In addition, the fibers exhibited no significant decrease in adsorption efficiency after being used 240 adsorption and desorption cycles. The proposed method was successfully applied to the selective enrichment and determination of target PAHs in different water samples.

RESUMEN

Theanine is an important quality parameter referring to tea quality. Applying nitrogen fertilizers is one strategy to improve the level of theanine; however, the effect of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria on theanine synthesis in tea roots has been less studied. In this study, the bacteria isolated from Qimen County with the maximum potassium (K) solubilization were identified as Bacillus by biochemical and molecular analyses. We show that tartaric and pyruvic acids produced by Bacillus were important components related to K solubilization in vitro. Pot experiments and enzymatic assays in vitro showed that inoculation with Bacillus-secreted organic acids increased the level of available potassium in the soil. The increased K level activated recombinant CsTSI activity (theanine biosynthesis enzyme) and increased ethylamine content (the synthesis precursor of theanine), resulting in promoted theanine synthesis in tea roots. Therefore, our study indicates that Bacillus can be a potential bioinoculant for biofortification of tea.

RESUMEN

K+ availability is important for growth and quality of tea (Camellia sine sis L.). K solubilising bacteria convert insoluble K to available K. This study was conducted to screen K solubilising bacteria isolated from tea rhizosphere soil in Qimen county, Anhui province, China. The maximum K solubilisation colony (the ratio of diameter halo/colony was 2.54) was identified as Burkholderia sp. (storage number: M2021105) by biochemistry and molecular analysis. Pot experiments (Laterite) showed that the inoculation of Burkholderia sp. significantly improved tea plant height (Zhongcha108, 1 year old) and total polyphenols content by 21.14% and 21.58% compared with the control, respectively. Higher polyphenol level promoted the formation of theaflavin in the fermentation experiments. Further experiments showed that tartaric acid and pryuvic acid produced by Burkholderia sp. are important components associated with K solubilisation in vitro . Burkholderia sp. significantly increased soil available K by 15.12%; however, there was no significant difference in available N and P, and Cu, Mg, Zn and Ca compared with the control. K content in inoculated tea roots and leaves was significantly higher (50% and 10%, respectively) than the control. Compared with the control, exogenous supply of 60mgkg-1 K significantly increased levels of polyphenol (53.97%), theaflavin (16.31%), theaflavin-3-gallate (20%), theaflavin 3'-gallic acid ester (32.24%) and theaflavin 3,3'-gallic acid ester (40.95%). Due to its ability to enable higher available soil K, ur study indicated that Burkholderia sp. have potential to increase total polyphenols content be a bio-inoculant for biofortification of tea.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this 2-arm parallel trial was to assess the effects of pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) on the reduction of pain caused by initial orthodontic tooth movement. METHODS: Thirty-three female patients (mean age, 16.8 ± 3.8 years) who began orthodontic treatment using fixed appliances were examined. In the pilot study, male patients were less likely to use the PEMF device (epatchQ; Speed Dental, Seoul, Korea) and answer a survey consistently, so eligibility criteria were female patients who were periodontally and systemically healthy at the initiation of treatment and had no history of dental pain in the prior 2 weeks or who used no medications (anti-inflammatory or analgesic drugs) during the experiment period. Each patient had brackets bonded on the maxillary teeth, and a 0.014-in nickel-titanium archwire was tied with elastomeric rings. Their maxillary arches were randomly divided into left and right sides in a split-mouth design: a normal PEMF device (experimental group) was used on 1 side, and a PEMF device with an inversely inserted battery (placebo group) was used on the opposite side of the arch for 7 hours on 3 consecutive nights. A Google survey link was sent to the patients' mobile phones via text message, and they were instructed to record their current pain on the survey. The survey was sent a total of 6 times after insertion of the initial archwire at 0 (T0), 2 (T1), 6 (T2), 24 (T3), 48 (T4), and 72 (T5) hours. Patients recorded the degree of pain in resting and clenching states using a numeric rating scale (NRS) from 1 (no pain) to 10 (worst pain). PEMF devices were used after T2. Generalized linear mixed models, along with ancillary pairwise analyses, were used to model and evaluate the differences in pain reported over 72 hours. RESULTS: The NRS scores did not differ across the groups during the before-PEMF phase for resting (mean difference, -0.07; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.73 to 0.59; P = 0.842) and clenching (mean difference, -0.28; 95% CI, -1.11 to 0.56, P = 0.513). During the after-PEMF phase, NRS scores in the experimental group were significantly lower than those in the placebo group during both resting (mean difference, -1.46; 95% CI, -2.06 to -0.85; P = <0.001) and clenching (mean difference, -1.88; 95% CI, -2.74 to -1.02, P = <0.001). The NRS scores did not differ across the groups during the before-PEMF phase for either state but were significantly lower in the experimental group than in the placebo group at T3, T4, and T5 (P <0.01). The average NRS score in the clenching state was significantly greater than in the resting state. CONCLUSIONS: PEMF was effective in reducing orthodontic pain caused by initial archwire placement. REGISTRATION: The trial was not registered. PROTOCOL: The protocol was not published before trial commencement.

RESUMEN

Curcumin, a derivative from the dried rhizome of curcuma longa, has been proven to possess anti-tumor effects. However, the detailed molecular mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. In this study, we aimed to explore the anti-tumor mechanisms of curcumin in treating gastric cancer. BALB/C mice grafted with a mouse gastric adenocarcinoma cell line (MFC) were used as the experimental model. Mice received different doses of curcumin after grafting. Tumor size was measured and tumor weight was determined after tumor inoculation. TUNEL assay and flow cytometric analysis were applied to evaluate the apoptosis of the cancer cells. Serum cytokines IFN-γ, TNF-α, granzyme B and perforin were detected by ELISA assay. The anti-tumor effect was determined using cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) assays and in vivo tumor prevention tests. The expression of DEC1, HIF-1α, STAT3 and VEGF in tumor tissues was examined by immunostaining and analyzed using an Image J analysis system. Compared with controls, tumor growth (size and weight) was significantly inhibited by curcumin treatment (P < 0.05). The apoptotic index in gastric cancer cells was significantly increased in the curcumin treatment group. Splenocyte cells from mice treated with curcumin exhibited higher cytolytic effects on MFC cancer cells than those from mice treated with saline (P < 0.01). The expression of DEC1, HIF-1α, STAT3 and VEGF in tumor tissues was down-regulated after curcumin treatment. Our results indicate that curcumin inhibits the proliferation of gastric carcinoma by inducing the apoptosis of tumor cells, activating immune cells to secrete a large amount of cytokines, and down-regulating the DEC1, HIF-1α, VEGF and STAT3 signal transduction pathways.

RESUMEN

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were employed to design tandem molecular sieves as a dual platform for selective solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and high-resolution gas chromatographic (GC) separation of target analytes in complex matrixes. An elegant combination of a ZIF-8-coated fiber for SPME with a ZIF-8-coated capillary for GC allows selective extraction and separation of n-alkanes from complex matrixes such as petroleum-based fuel and biological fluids. The proposed tandem ZIF-8 molecular sieves not only offered good enhancement factors from 235 (hexane) to 1212 (nonane), but also exhibited wide linearity with 3 orders of magnitude for the tested linear alkanes. The limits of detection for the linear alkanes ranged from 0.46 ng L(-1) (nonane) to 1.06 ng L(-1)(hexane). The relative standard deviations of retention time, peak area, peak height, and half peak width for five replicate determinations of the tested n-alkanes at 30 ng L(-1) were 0.02-0.26%, 1.9-8.6%, 1.4-6.0%, and 1.3-7.2%, respectively. The developed tandem ZIF-8 molecular sieves were further used for the determination of linear alkanes in petroleum-based fuel and human serum. The large diversity in structure and pore size allows various combinations of MOFs for designing an MOF-based tandem molecular sieve platform to achieve different selectivities in extraction and chromatographic separation and to solve headache problems in complex real sample analysis.
