RESUMEN

In the early days of the People's Republic of China, Maternal and Child Health Exhibitions were widely held in urban and rural areas across the country. The vivid image and wide coverage of the Exhibition have directly promoted the popularization of a new and more progressive delivery methods in urban and rural areas across the country. While effectively protecting the health of mothers and children, the people's political power is closely linked to "progress".The purpose, organizer and content of the Maternal and Child Health Exhibition are related to the policies of new methods of midwifery, painless delivery, and birth control in the early days of People's Republic of China. It also partly carried the mission of learning from the Soviet Union to "learn from the advanced medical experience", therefore the content in the first ten years was slightly different.

RESUMEN

Through the important roles of officials and businessmen as well as the role of bridge of Japan, the medical culture communication between Song Dynasty and Goryeo Dynasty involved many aspects. The Song Dynasty gave medical books to the Goryeo Dynasty which returned some medical books to the Song Dynasty after the inscribing and printing of the medical books. In addition, the phenomena of communication between the two countries are frequent and very common. By the invitation of Goryeo Dynasty, some people of Song dynasty left for Goryeo Dynasty to give medical treatment and to spread the medical knowledge for several times, at the same time, some people from Goryeo Dynasty came to Song Dynasty to study Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Such medical culture communication facilitated and promoted the formation of the medical system and national medicine in Goryeo Dynasty, and enabled the return of some lost medical books in the Song Dynasty from Goryeo Dynasty. More importantly, the medical culture communications between the two countries promoted the influences of TCM in East Asia.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated whether supplementations of different vitamins and iron could reduce the serum homocysteine levels in 91 atrophic glossitis (AG) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Atrophic glossitis (AG) patients with concomitant deficiencies of vitamin B12 only (n = 39, group I), folic acid only (n = 10, group II), iron only (n = 9, group III), or vitamin B12 plus iron (n = 19, group IV) were treated with vitamin BC capsules plus deficient hematinics. AG patients without definite hematinic deficiencies (n = 14, group V) were treated with vitamin BC capsules only. The blood homocysteine and hematinic levels at baseline and after treatment till all oral symptoms had disappeared were measured and compared by paired t-test. RESULTS: Supplementations with vitamin BC capsules plus corresponding deficient hematinics for groups I, II, III, IV patients and with vitamin BC capsules only for group V patients could reduce the high serum homocysteine levels to significantly lower levels after a mean treatment period of 8.3-11.6 months (all P-values < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Supplementations with vitamin BC capsules plus corresponding deficient hematinics or with vitamin BC capsules only can reduce the high serum homocysteine levels to significantly lower levels in AG patients.

RESUMEN

The bioavailability of selenium in soils for plants depends more on its forms than on its total concentration. The purpose of the present study was to examine the solid-phase forms of selenium at different depths of three soil series representing major farming soil groups in Taiwan as well as the amounts of selenium in sand, silt and clay fractions of the soils. The study was conducted by means of sequential extraction to obtain the amounts of selenium and the distribution of various solid-phase forms of selenium at different depths of Pinchen (121 degrees 11(')E, 24 degrees 55(')N), Toulun-Sheto (120 degrees 55(')E, 24 degrees 50(')N), and Chunliao (120 degrees 25(')E, 23 degrees 57(')N) soil series. The amounts of metal oxide-bound form of selenium in the three soil series were the largest, with those of Pinchen and Toulun-Sheto soil series exceeding 50% of the total amounts of selenium and that of Chunliao soil series maintained at 30-40%. In the Pinchen and Toulun-Sheto soil series, the amounts of selenium in clay fractions were the largest, with a significant difference between the clays with and without metal oxides and organic matter removed. The amounts of selenium remained high in silt and/or sand fractions of the Chunliao soil series with metal oxides and organic matter removed. Metal oxide and organic matter contents of the three soil series mainly affect the amounts of various solid-phase forms of selenium and their distribution in different depths and particle size fractions of the soils. This observation of selenium associated with soil constituents was in good agreement with the results of the adsorption of selenite and selenate by the three soil series.

RESUMEN

Adsorption and desorption process of cadmium in red soil (Ferrisols) as well as the influence by media's pH were investigated in detail with and without citric acid and EDTA. Experimental results clearly showed that Cd adsorption in red soil was affected significantly by the coexisted organic chemicals. In the presence of citric acid and EDTA, Cd adsorption in red soil increased with pH in acid media but decreased in high pH one. Further studies placed stress on the adsorbed Cd in red soil which was found to be existed mainly as exchangeable one at pH < 5.5, and desorption rate by 0.10 mol/L NaNO3 gave a peak-shaped curve due to the difference of specifically and nonspecifically adsorbed Cd with pH's change.

RESUMEN

Both alternative medicine and western medicine have been commonly used to treat pediatric cancer patients in Taiwan. Each has its own intrinsic strengths and weaknesses and they can be complementary. Little is known about medical help-seeking behaviors of parents of pediatric cancer patients, especially those related to alternative therapies. This study investigated the extent and parental expectations on use of alternative therapies. All primary caregivers of 63 eligible patients were interviewed. Use of alternative therapies, regardless of education level or social status of their families, is prevalent (n = 46, 73%) in Taiwan. Commonly used alternative therapies included, in order of popularity, formulated functional food (n = 22, 48%), temple worship/shamanism (n = 19, 40%), traditional Chinese medicine (n = 9, 20%), secret recipes/herbs (n = 13, 28%), and diet supplements (n = 9, 19%). Such practices generally occur without medical guidance from oncologists, largely because of poor interactions between parents and oncologists. Future efforts should be made to encourage both parents and oncologists to discuss this issue. Nurses may serve as mediators by developing mutual trust and a sharing relationship between these groups.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Nitric oxide (NO) participates in the regulation of hemodynamic and microcirculatory changes in intestinal ischemia and reperfusion (I/R). However, the nature of the involvement of an inducible NO release has been controversial. This study evaluates the impact of an inducible NO synthase inhibitor, aminoguanidine, used as a treatment in a rat intestinal I/R model. METHODS: We investigated the hemodynamics by measuring the mean arterial pressure (MAP), and the microcirculatory responses of the intestine and liver to systemically administered aminoguanidine by use of laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF), in vivo microscopy, and flow cytometry. RESULTS: During the 30-min ischemia of the selected 20-cm ileal segment, no MAP change was noted. At reperfusion, a marked decrease of MAP was noted and the lowest levels were noted 3 hours after reperfusion (67 +/- 4% vs. 99 +/- 5% in sham-operated control animals). A marked decrease in liver perfusion as measured by LDF was noted 1 hour after reperfusion and remained low at 5 hours (72 +/- 4% vs. 97 +/- 3% in sham-operated control animals). A marked decrease in intestine perfusion was noted by using LDF 1 hour after reperfusion and remained low at 5 hours (43 +/- 3% vs. 92 +/- 4% in sham-operated control animals). The flow velocity of the postcapillary venules of the intestine was markedly decreased (1.01 +/- 0.62 vs. 2.67 +/- 0.34 mm/s in sham-operated control animals) at 5 hours after reperfusion. The flow velocity of the postsinusoidal venules of the liver was also markedly decreased (1.01 +/- 0.62% vs. 2.67 +/- 0.34% in sham-operated control animals). Leukocyte-endothelial interaction (adhesion) was increased in the postcapillary venules of the intestine (54 +/- 12 vs. 6 +/- 4/microm2 in sham-operated control animals) and in the postsinusoidal venules of the liver (32 +/- 8 vs. 2 +/- 2/microm2 in sham-operated control animals). Concomitantly, the granulocyte count was increased (9.1 +/- 0.6 vs. 2.1 +/- 0.3% of total circulating leukocytes in sham-operated control animals), with an increase of CD 11b expression. Aminoguanidine administration (1 mg/kg) 0.5 hour before ischemia and 1 hour after reperfusion significantly increased MAP, increased intestine and liver perfusion, decreased adhesion, and decreased circulating granulocytes and CD 11b expression. CONCLUSION: Inhibition of an inducible NO release by aminoguanidine in intestinal I/R can attenuate hemodynamic and microcirculatory derangement.

RESUMEN

Vitamin A or its synthetic analogues are potent in controlling cell differentiation and in preventing epithelial cancer in experimental animals. Although some community-based studies have found that high serum retinol levels in prediagnostic sera were associated with reduced risk for cancer, other reports in humans have not confirmed this finding. This study is to evaluate the preoperative serum vitamin A level in breast cancer patients in Taiwan. The serum specimens were collected from 106 female cases of breast cancer (aged 30 to 70 years), 32 female cases of benign breast disease (aged 29 to 57 years), and 40 healthy females (aged 22 to 52 years). The serum vitamin A levels were measured by colorimetic analysis. The results showed the mean value of the vitamin A level was 140.4 +/- 65.7 micrograms/dl in the breast cancer group comparing to 145.2 +/- 44.2 micrograms/dl in the benign breast disease group, 144.0 +/- 30.0 micrograms/dl in the control group (P > 0.05). The characteristics of the breast cancer group were analyzed and they revealed that serum vitamin A levels did not bear statistically significant differences in age, duration, steroid receptor, tumor size and menopausal state. (P > 0.05) In conclusion, the serum vitamin A levels were not decreased in early breast cancer patients. The serum vitamin A levels were significantly decreased in the metastatic breast cancer group, especially in liver metastatic women. (P < 0.05). Postoperative vitamin A supplement may have potential benefit to metastatic breast cancer patients.

RESUMEN

Aberrant expression of the cell surface adhesion molecule CD44 and its variant forms has been shown to be associated with the invasive and metastatic potential of cancer cells, and with poor prognosis in several types of cancers. Expression of CD44 standard (CD44s) and variant (CD44v) forms in oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), epithelial dysplasia (ED), epithelial hyperkeratosis (EH) and normal buccal mucosa (NBM) have been examined using antibodies to CD44s, CD44v5, CD44v6 and CD44v7-8. Positive CD44s, CD44v5, CD44v6 and CD44v7-8 staining was detected in all the specimens from NBM, EH and ED. Positive staining of CD44s, CD44v5, CD44v6 or CD44v7-8 was detected in 55 (88.7%), 48 (77.4%), 59 (95.2%) and 22 (35.5%) of the 62 SCC specimens, respectively. The positive staining of CD44v7-8 in oral SCC was significantly less than that in NBM (P<0.01). No significant correlation was found between CD44v7-8 expression and daily or total consumption of betel quids or cigarettes by the SCC patients. The 5-year survival rate for patients with CD44v7-8-positive tumours was significantly higher than that for the CD44v7-8-negative group (P<0.03). These results indicate that loss of CD44v7-8 expression may be a valuable factor for determining prognosis in oral SCC patients.

RESUMEN

This study was designed to investigate hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy as a treatment for managing animals with induced acute pancreatitis. Forty-five anesthetized male Sprague-Dawley rats were studied. A severe acute pancreatitis model was established by combining an intravenous infusion of cerulein (15 microg/kg/h) and an intraductal injection of 0.1 ml of glycodeoxycholic acid (5 mM). Pathology, serum amylase level, pancreatic malondiadehyde levels and water content of the lungs and the pancreas were used to evaluate the severity of disease. Moreover, an in vivo microscopic technique was used to investigate microcirculatory derangement in the pancreas, i.e., flow velocity and leukocytes sticking in postcapillary venules. HBO was delivered in three regimens, i.e., 100% oxygen at 2.5 absolute atmospheric pressure (AAP), 40% oxygen at 2.5 AAP, and 100% oxygen at 1 AAP, 6 h after the initiation of induction of acute pancreatitis. All animals survived until the end of the experiments. HBO significantly improved the pathologic conditions and pancreatic malondiadehyde levels. Concomitantly, it also significantly lessened the severity of lung edema and improved the microcirculatory environment in the pancreas. Our results support the findings that HBO therapy has a beneficial effect on pancreatic microcirculation and lung edema during acute pancreatitis in rats.

RESUMEN

Microcirculatory derangement, energy depletion and lipid peroxidation have been related to development of ischemia-reperfusion injury in the liver. This study investigates the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury. Adult, male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. Three groups were evaluated: 1) sham-operated control (laparotomy only, no ischemia, no HBO), n=8; 2) ischemia control (1-h ischemia, 2-h reperfusion, no HBO), n=8; and 3) HBO pretreatment (100%, oxygen, 2.5 atm absolute, 90 min) plus ischemia (1-h ischemia, 2-h reperfusion), n=8. An in vivo microscope was used to investigate hepatic microcirculation. Tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) were determined. In comparison with the ischemia control group, HBO significantly improved harmful insults following ischemia-reperfusion. HBO lessened adherent leukocyte count (6.00+/-1.31 cells/200 microm vs 11.38+/-2.88 cells/200 microm), and improved flow velocity (1.72+/-0.26 mm/s vs 0.83+/-0.19 mm/s) in post-sinusoidal venules. HBO also reduced MDA (1.04+/-0.24 nmol/mg protein vs 2.24+/-0.49 micromol/g protein), and increased ATP (2.03+/-0.17 micromol/g wet wt vs 0.73+/-0.11 micromol/g wet wt) levels. This study demonstrates that HBO before ischemia may ameliorate the ischemia-reperfusion injury of the liver in the rat model.

RESUMEN

Four benzofuranosesquiterpenes, 1-hydroxy-2-(3'-pentenyl)-3,7-dimethylbenzofuran (1), 1-hydroxy-2-(3'-pentenyl)-3,7-dimethylbenzofuran (2), cacalol (13), and 1,2-dehydrocacalohastin ( 14) were isolated from the rhizomes of Ligularia virgaurea (Compositae). A lipophilic group and an aqueous-favoring group were introduced to the compounds 1 and 13 to afford twelve new derivatives. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The results of the pharmacological test indicated that some of them can block Ca (++) influx by occupying binding sites of dihydropyridine.
