Myofascial pain around an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) during hemodialysis (HD) can affect a patient compliance with HD and quality of life. Prolonged use of analgesics is often associated with increased adverse events. Juan Bi Tang (JBT) is an ancient decoction of Chinese traditional medicinal plants commonly used to treat spasms and pain in the shoulder and upper arm, and it is popularly believed to have favorable outcomes in Asian populations. This interventional prospective pilot study was worked to demonstrate the potential of JBT for fistula-associated myofascial pain in HD patients and to prepare for future randomized controlled trials. Eligible patients were enrolled in this study and took JBT to treat fistula-associated myofascial pain for 4 weeks. Pain scores on a visual analogue scale (VAS) were reported at baseline, after a 4-week intervention, and 2 weeks after completion of treatment. The Kidney Disease Quality of Life 36-Item Short Form and a safety laboratory monitor were statistically compared between different time points. A total of 20 patients were selected as eligible participants and completed the intervention and questionnaires. The mean VAS score was significantly reduced after JBT treatment (P < .01). Participants reported improved physical (P < .01) and mental health (P < .05) after treatment. However, only improvements in mental health were preserved 2 weeks after the end of treatment (P < .05). In this study, complementary JBT for HD patients with fistula-related myofascial pain was viable and well tolerated, and it demonstrated the expected effects on pain control.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain refers to pain that persists for over three months. Chronic pain may restrict activities of daily living, including work, learning, social life, and can lead to anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbance. Imaging data have demonstrated that central sensitization often occurs in the brain of patients with chronic pain, which arises from imbalanced neurotransmission in the central nervous system. Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) is an ion channel to serve as an inflammatory detector in the brain. We aim to determine the properties of acupoint catgut embedding (ACE) on cold stress-induced mice fibromyalgia (FM) and surveyed the character of TRPV1 and linked molecules in chronic FM pain. METHODS: Intermittent cold stress (ICS) was used to induce mice FM model. Mice were subgrouped into normal mice, ICS-induced FM group, FM mice with ACE, and FM in Trpv1-⁣/- group. ACE is a novel acupuncture technique that provides convenience and continuous nerve stimulation that has been reported effective on pain management. RESULTS: Our behavioral experiments showed similar levels of pain response among all groups before treatment. After ICS, prolonged mechanical and thermal pain was initiated (mechanical threshold: 1.96 ± 0.12 g; thermal latency: 4.86 ± 0.21 s) and were alleviated by ACE treatment and TRPV1 gene deletion. Inflammatory mediators were increased in the plasma of FM mice, while TRPV1 and related kinases were amplified in the hypothalamus and cerebellum. These changes were ameliorated in the ACE-treated and Trpv1-⁣/- groups. CONCLUSIONS: These novel findings suggest that chronic FM pain can be modulated by ACE or TRPV1 gene deletion. The analgesic effect of ACE through the TRPV1 pathway may reflect its potential as a therapeutic target for FM treatment.

The treatment of hyperuricemia and gout is mostly based on lowering serum uric acid levels using drugs, such as allopurinol, or increasing urinary excretion of uric acid. However, some patients still experience adverse reactions to allopurinol and turn to Chinese medicine as an alternative. Therefore, it is crucial to design a preclinical study to obtain more convincing data on the treatment of hyperuricemia and gout with Chinese medicine. This study aimed to explore the therapeutic effect of emodin, a Chinese herbal extract, in a rat model of hyperuricemia and gout. In this study, we used 36 Sprague-Dawley rats, which were randomly divided into six groups for experimentation. Hyperuricemia was induced in rats by intraperitoneal injections of potassium oxonate. The efficacy of emodin in reducing serum uric acid levels was demonstrated by comparing the positive control group with groups treated with three different concentrations of emodin. The inflammatory profiles, including interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α levels, were unaffected by emodin treatment. In the experimental results, it was observed that the serum uric acid concentration in the vehicle control group was 1.80 ± 1.14, while the concentrations in the moderate and high concentration emodin groups were 1.18 ± 0.23 and 1.12 ± 0.57, resulting in no significant difference in uric acid concentration between these treatment groups and the control group, indicating that emodin has a therapeutic effect on hyperuricemia. The increase in the fractional excretion of uric acid (FEUA) demonstrated that emodin promoted urinary uric acid excretion without significantly affecting the inflammatory profile. Thus, emodin reduced the serum uric acid concentration to achieve effective treatment of hyperuricemia and gout by increasing urinary excretion. These results were supported by the measured serum uric acid and FEUA levels. Our data have potential implications for the treatment of gout and other types of hyperuricemia in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by complex pain symptoms lacking impersonal considerations in diagnosis and treatment evaluation, which often happens in women. Chronic and persistent widespread pain is the key symptom disturbing patients with FM, leading to depression, obesity, and sleep disturbances. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) activation produces a harmful sensory input involved in central pain; this is the focus of this study. Electroacupuncture (EA) has beneficial effects in reducing FM pain, but its connection with TLR4 signaling is still unknown. METHODS: Intermittent cold stress significantly induced mechanical and thermal pain. EA, but not sham EA, reliably attenuated mechanical and thermal hyperalgesia. The increased inflammatory mediators in FM mice were reduced in the EA group, but not in the sham group. RESULTS: All TLR4 and related molecule levels increased in the FM mice's hypothalamus, periaqueductal gray (PAG), and cerebellum. These increases could be attenuated by EA but not sham stimulation. Activation of TLR4 by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) significantly induced FM and can be further reversed by a TLR4 antagonist. CONCLUSIONS: These mechanisms provide evidence that the analgesic effect of EA is related to the TLR4 pathway. In addition, we showed that inflammation can activate the TLR4 pathway and provided new possible therapeutic targets for FM pain.

Globally, breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer deaths. In Taiwan, it is the most prevalent cancer among females. Since San-Huang-Xie-Xin-Tang (SHXXT) exerts not only an anti-inflammatory but an immunomodulatory effect, it may act as a potent anti-tumor agent. Herein, the study aimed to explore the influence of SHXXT and its constituents on the mortality rate among breast cancer patients in Taiwan regarding the component effect and the dose-relationship effect. By using the Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI) Research Database (NHIRD), the study analyzed 5387 breast cancer patients taking Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) and 5387 breast cancer patients not using CHM. CHM means SHXXT and its constituents in the study. The Kaplan-Meier method was utilized to determine the mortality probabilities among patients. Whether the CHM influences the mortality rate among patients was estimated by Cox proportional hazard regression analysis. The use of CHM could lower the cancer mortality rate by 59% in breast cancer patients. The protective effect was parallel to the cumulative days of CHM use and the annual average CHM dose. In addition, the mortality rate was lower in patients who used SHXXT compared to those who only used one of its constituents. SHXXT and its constituents were all promising therapeutic weapons against breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Retinoblastoma, the most common pediatric intraocular malignancy, can develop during embryogenesis, with most children being diagnosed at 3-4 years of age. Multimodal therapies are typically associated with high levels of cytotoxicity and side effects. Therefore, the development of novel treatments with minimal side effects is crucial. Magnolol has a significant anti-tumor effect on various cancers. However, its antitumor effect on retinoblastoma remains unclear. PURPOSE: The study aimed to determine the effects of magnolol on the regulation of EMT, migration, invasion, and cancer progression in retinoblastoma and the modulation of miR-200c-3p expression and the Wnt/ zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1)/E-cadherin axis in vivo and in vitro. METHODS: The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) (MTT) assay was used to evaluate magnolol-induced cell toxicity in the Y79 retinoblastoma cell line. Flow cytometry and immunostaining assays were performed to investigate the magnolol-regulated mitochondrial membrane potential and the intracellular and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species levels in Y79 retinoblastoma cells. Orthotopic and subcutaneous xenograft experiments were performed in eight-week-old male null mice to study retinoblastoma progression and metastasis. In situ hybridization and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) assays were performed to evaluate the level of the anti-cancer miRNA miR-200c-3p. The mRNA and protein levels of E-cadherin, ß-catenin, α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), fibronectin-1, and ZEB1 were analyzed using RT-qPCR, immunoblot, immunocytochemistry, and immunohistochemistry assays in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS: Magnolol increased E-cadherin levels and reduced the activation of the EMT signaling pathway, EMT, tumor growth, metastasis, and cancer progression in the Y79 retinoblastoma cell line as well as in the orthotopic and subcutaneous xenograft animal models. Furthermore, magnolol increased the expression of miR-200c-3p. Our results demonstrate that miRNA-200c-3p inhibits EMT progression through the Wnt16/ß-catenin/ZEB1/E-cadherin axis, and the ZEB1 silencing response shows that miR-200c-3p regulates ZEB1-mediated EMT in retinoblastoma. CONCLUSION: Magnolol has an antitumor effect by increasing E-cadherin and miRNA-200c-3p expression to regulate ZEB1-mediated EMT and cancer progression in retinoblastoma. The anti-tumor effect of magnolol by increasing E-cadherin and miRNA-200c-3p expression to regulate ZEB1-mediated EMT and cancer progression in retinoblastoma has been elucidated for the first time.

Background: Dialysis-related myofascial pain in hemodialysis (HD) patients is an important issue that is associated with many other psychosomatic problems. Effective interventions are required to alleviate pain in this group. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) may be a potential therapeutic treatment for reducing pain. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of a classic CHM formula intervention on pain intensity, daily function, quality of life (QOL), and safety in patients receiving HD in a dialysis center within the context of southern Taiwan. Methods: This will be a randomized, open label, cross-over trial with two parallel groups in a pre- and post-test study. Forty patients reporting myofascial pain related to the arteriovenous (AV) fistula in the arm during regular HD sessions will be recruited. Participants will receive 4 weeks of treatment with Juan Bi Tang (JBT) and 4 weeks of no treatment in a random order, separated by a washout period of 2 weeks. Treatment doses (3 g JBT) will be consumed thrice daily. The primary outcome measure will be the Kidney Disease Quality of Life 36-Item Short-Form Survey. Secondary outcomes will include the Fugl-Meyer Assessment-arm, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) of pain, and grip strength. Outcomes will be collected before and after each intervention, for a total of four times per participant. The safety evaluation will focus on adverse events (AEs). Discussion: This study will be the first to use CHM to treat patients receiving HD with dialysis-related myofascial pain in their fistula arm and to perform a complete assessment of the treatment, including records of QOL, arm function and muscle power, severity of pain, and safety. The results of the study will provide convincing evidence on the use of JBT as an adjuvant treatment for dialysis-related myofascial pain. Approximately 1 in 20 people develops kidney stones at some point in their life. Although the surgical removal of stones is common, the recurrence rate remains high and it is therefore important to prevent the occurrence of kidney stones. We chose Astragalus membranaceus (AM), which is a traditional Chinese medicine, to study the prevention of urolithiasis using a Drosophila model based on our previous screening of traditional Chinese herbs. Wild-type Drosophila melanogaster Canton-S adult fruit flies were used in this study. Ethylene glycol (EG, 0.5%) was added to food as a lithogenic agent. The positive control agent (2% potassium citrate (K-citrate)) was then compared with AM (2, 8, and 16 mg/mL). After 21 days, the fruit flies were sacrificed under carbon dioxide narcotization, and the Malpighian tubules were dissected, removed, and processed for polarized light microscopy examination to observe calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystallization. Then, the ex vivo dissolution of crystals in the Malpighian tubules was compared between K-citrate and AM. Survival analysis of the EG, K-citrate, and AM groups was also performed. Both 2% K-citrate and AM (16 mg/mL) significantly inhibited EG-induced CaOx crystal formation. Mean lifespan was significantly reduced by the administration of EG, and the results were significantly reversed in the AM (8 and 16 mg/mL) groups. However, AM extract did not directly dissolve CaOx crystals in Drosophila Malpighian tubules ex vivo. In conclusion, AM extract decreased the ratio of CaOx crystallization in the Malpighian tubules and significantly ameliorated EG-induced reduction of lifespan. AM prevented CaOx crystal formation in the Drosophila model.

Background: Hypertension (HTN) is the leading preventable risk factor for cardiovascular disease worldwide. Patients with HTN are at higher risk for heart failure (HF). The currently available therapeutic approaches for HTN do not always optimally control blood pressure or are not suitable for hypertensive patients who have a higher number of comorbidities. This study aimed to determine whether Chinese herbal medicine (CMH)-based interventions could reduce the risk of HF in hypertensive patients. Methods: This retrospective study randomly selected 2 million enrollees from the National Health Insurance Research Database and identified 507,608 patients who were newly diagnosed with HTN in 2000-2017. After 1:1 frequency-matching by age, sex, index year, income, urbanization, duration of HTN, comorbidities and antihypertensive medications, we selected 8,912 eligible patients in each group. During 16 years of follow-up, 380 CHM users and 426 CHM non-users developed HF, representing incidence rates of 6.29 and 7.43 per 1,000 person-years, respectively. Results: CHM users had significantly lower HF risk compared with CHM non-users (adjusted HR = 0.85, 95% CI 0.74-0.98). The markedly predominant effect was observed in those receiving CHM products for more than 180 days (adjusted HR = 0.65). The frequently prescribed formula, Jia-Wei-Xiao-Yao-San, and the single herbs Ge Gen, Huang Qi, Du Zhong, Huang Qin, and Chuan Xiong were significantly associated with lower risk of HF. Conclusions: This population-based study revealed decreased HF risk in hypertensive patients with CHM use. These findings may provide a reference for HF prevention strategies and support the integration of CHM into clinical intervention programs that provide a favorable prognosis for hypertensive patients.

Pain management for traumatic rib fracture is important to prevent complications and reduce associated comorbidities. This trial investigated the analgesic efficacy of acupuncture on traumatic rib fracture. Patients with traumatic rib fracture were randomly assigned to traditional acupuncture (TA), laser acupuncture (LA) or sham laser acupuncture (SLA) groups in a 1:1:1 ratio. The intervention was performed on days 1 to 3 after treatment allocation. The acupoints included bilateral LI4 (Hegu), SJ6 (Zhigou), ST36 (Zusanli) and GB34 (Yanglingquan). The primary outcome was Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) scores for pain after the intervention. Secondary outcomes included sustained maximal inspiration (SMI) lung volume, stress responses, the use of analgesics, and associated complications. Data were analyzed via one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Scheffé's post hoc testing or chi-squared testing. Of the 120 study participants, 109 completed all interventions and measurements. The primary outcomes, which indicated average pain intensity levels and pain while deep breathing, were both significantly lower in the TA and LA groups than in the SLA group after 2 treatments. No between-group differences were observed in SMI lung volume, stress response, analgesics use or associated complications. These findings suggest that TA and LA are safe and effective analgesic modalities for pain management for traumatic rib fracture. BACKGROUND: Major trauma is the leading cause of death in the young population. The inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses are associated with posttraumatic morbidity and mortality; however, it is not fully clear how to reestablish the homeostasis in patients with major trauma. METHODS: This study will be a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, partially double-blinded, three-armed trial. One hundred eighty participants diagnosed with major trauma will be randomly assigned to an electroacupuncture (EA), a laser acupuncture (LA), or a sham laser acupuncture group in a 1:1:1 ratio. All participants will undergo EA, LA, or sham laser acupuncture intervention once a day on 5 acupoints (LI4, PC6, ST36, SP6, and EX-HN1) for 14 consecutive days after enrollment. The primary outcome measure will be the length of hospital stay. Secondary outcomes will be inflammatory mediators, including serum C-reactive protein, interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, IL-1ß, and IL-10. Clinical outcomes will be numeric rating scale scores for pain, sequential organ failure assessment, ICU length of stay, 30-day mortality, and WHO Disability Assessment Schedule. Data will be analyzed by chi-square test or t test for pairwise comparisons, as well as one-way ANOVA followed by post hoc Tukey method between groups. In rats with 2-deoxy-2-(3-(methyl-3-nitrosoureido)-d-glucopyranose streptozotocin- (STZ-) induced insulin-dependent diabetes (IDDM), continuous 15 Hz electrical stimulation at bilateral ST36 acupoints for 30 and 60 minutes has been shown to prevent hyperglycemia. We hypothesized that the mechanism of action in STZ-induced IDDM rats is that electrical stimulation at bilateral ST36 acupoints is effective in improving insulin receptor substrate type 1 (IRS-1) and glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4) protein expressions associated with counteracting both plasma glucose and free fatty acid (FFA) levels during isoflurane anesthesia. In this study, twenty-six healthy male Wistar rats, weighing 250-350 g and aged 8-10 weeks were tested. Rats in the experimental electroacupuncture (EA) group (n = 13) received 15 Hz electrical stimulation at bilateral ST 36 acupoints for 30 and 60 minutes. Rats in the control group (n = 13) were handled but not subjected to the stimulation treatment. In both IDDM and normal Wistar rats, we observed a negative change in plasma glucose levels when rats were given the EA treatment, but a positive change in plasma glucose without EA treatment relative to baseline. Within the IDDM group, a negative change in FFA levels was observed when rats were given the EA treatment, while a positive change in the FFA level was shown without the EA treatment. In the expressed protein signals, we found a significant elevation in both GLUT4 and IRS-1 proteins in the IDDM group treated by EA. Moreover, we found a significant mean difference between GLUT4 and IRS-1 protein expression levels relative to ß-actin. Our findings suggested that EA at bilateral ST36 acupoints could serve as an effective strategy for lowering plasma glucose by decreasing free fatty acid levels and improving the expression of IRS-1 and GLUT4 proteins in a STZ-IDDM rat model during isoflurane anesthesia.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with endometriosis may seek traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to help them conceive. The present study aims to evaluate the effects of TCM on reproductive and pregnancy outcomes in patients with endometriosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patients with endometriosis taken from the National Health Insurance (NHI) research database between 2000 and 2012 were divided into two cohorts based on the use of TCM treatment. The two cohorts were matched by age and comorbidities and followed up until a new diagnosis of infertility, ectopic pregnancy, or miscarriage. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to evaluate the hazard ratio (HR) of reproductive and pregnancy outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 5244 patients with endometriosis were analyzed, including 1748 TCM users and 3496 matched control subjects. The proportion of infertility was higher in TCM users than in non-TCM users (adjusted hazard ratio [HR]: 1.34, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.13-1.60). However, there was no significant difference in the proportion of ectopic pregnancies between TCM users and non-TCM users (adjusted HR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.60-1.13). There was no significant difference in the proportion of miscarriages between TCM users and non-TCM users (adjusted HR: 1.23, 95% CI: 0.95-1.61). CONCLUSION: TCM treatment showed insignificant efficacy in decreasing the risk of ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage in patients with endometriosis.

BACKGROUND: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is becoming more common in medical practice, but little is known about the concurrent use of CAM and conventional treatment. Therefore, the aim was to investigate the types of CAM used and their prevalence in a regional patient cohort with breast cancer (BC). METHODS: BC patients were interviewed with a structured questionnaire survey on the use of CAM in southern Taiwan at an Integrative Breast Cancer Center (IBCC). The National Centre for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) classification was used to group responses. Over a period of 8 months, all patients receiving treatment for cancer at the IBCC were approached. RESULTS: A total of 106 BC patients completed the survey (response rate: 79.7%). The prevalence of CAM use was 82.4%. Patients who were employed, were receiving radiotherapy and hormone therapy, and had cancer for a longer duration were more likely to use CAM (P < .05). Multivariate analysis identified employment as an independent predictor of CAM use (OR = 6.92; 95% CI = 1.33-36.15). Dietary supplementation (n = 69, 82.1%) was the type of CAM most frequently used, followed by exercise (n = 48, 57.1%) and traditional Chinese medicine (n = 29, 34.5%). The main reason for using CAM was to ameliorate the side effects of conventional therapies. Almost half (46.4%) of these CAM users did not disclose that they were using it in medical consultations with their physicians. Most chose to use CAM due to recommendations from family and friends. CONCLUSION: A large portion of BC patients at the IBCC undergoing anti-cancer treatment courses used CAM, but less than half discussed it with their physicians. Given the high prevalence of CAM, it would be justifiable to direct further resources toward this service so that cancer patients can benefit from a holistic approach to their treatment.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is commonly used for urinary symptoms in Eastern countries. Since there are few effective treatments available for patients with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), the psychological burden leads to increased healthcare-seeking behavior. Some patients may therefore seek TCM treatment for related urinary symptoms. Due to limited clinical research evaluating the effects of TCM on IC/BPS, we conducted a nationwide population-based cohort study to investigate the relationship between TCM and mental disorders among these patients. The IC/BPS cohort and its matched non-IC/BPS comparison cohort were recruited from the National Health Insurance (NHI) Research Database between 2000 and 2011. Patients with the use of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) granules or acupuncture over 90 days per year were enrolled as the TCM users. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to evaluate the hazard ratio (HR) of mental disorders related to interstitial cystitis. The incidence of mental disorders in the 2 cohorts was assessed with Kaplan-Meier curves. A total of 1123 patients with IC/BPS and 4492 matched non-IC/BPS subjects were included in this study. The IC/BPS cohort demonstrated higher incidence rate of mental disorders than the cohort without IC/BPS (adjusted HR: 2.21, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.73-2.81). There was no statistically significant difference in the risk of mental disorders between IC/BPS patients with and without CHM granules or acupuncture treatment (adjusted HR: 0.99, 95% CI: 0.58-1.68). Our results indicated that CHM and acupuncture showed insignificant efficacy in the prevention of mental disorders in IC/BPS patients.

Bidens pilosa (BP) is an edible Asteraceae plant found worldwide that has traditionally been used as food without noticeable side effects. BP has also been used as an herbal medicine to treat over 41 categories of disease in humans and animals. However, to date no long-term toxicity study of BP has been conducted in animals. In this study, 24-week oral toxicity of BP at doses of 0%, 0.5%, 2.5%, 5% and 10% of food was investigated in mice. Mortality, body weight, organ weight, food intake, water consumption, hematology, serum biochemistry, urinalysis, genotoxicity and organ histopathology of animals of both sexes were analyzed. No significant difference in the above parameters was observed between control and BP-fed mice except that body weight and food intake in those fed with 10% BP were significantly less than controls. In addition, similar results were seen in chickens fed with BP for 28 days. Collectively, the data demonstrate that BP has no adverse effects in mice and chickens at dose of 5% or less of food.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of frankincense and myrrha in the treatment of acute interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS). METHODS: The effects of frankincense and myrrha on the proliferation and migration of primary human urothelial cells (HUCs) were assessed in vitro. In the animal study, 48 virgin female rats were randomized into 4 groups (12 in each group): (1) control group (saline-injected control); (2) cyclophosphamide (CYP) group (intraperitoneal injected 150 mg/kg CYP); (3) CYP + pentosan polysulfate sodium group (orally received 50 mg/kg pentosan polysulfate sodium); and (4) CYP + frankincense and myrrha group [orally received frankincense (200 mg/kg) and myrrha (200 mg/kg)]. Rats orally received pentosan polysulfate sodium or frankincense and myrrha on day 1, 2, and 3. The experiments were performed on day 4. Pain and cystometry assessment behavior test were performed. Voiding interval values were assessed in rats under anesthesia. Finally, immunohistochemistry and Western blot were used to confirm the location and level, respectively, of cell junction-associated protein zonula occludens-2 (ZO-2) expression. RESULTS: Low dose frankincense and myrrha increased cell proliferation and migration in HUCs compared with control (P<0.05). Rats with acute IC/PBS rats exhibited lower voiding interval values, pain tolerance, and ZO-2 expression (P<0.05). Voiding interval values and pain tolerance were higher in the frankincense and myrrha group than CYP group (P<0.05). ZO-2 expression in the bladder was increased in the CYP + pentosan polysulfate and frankincense + myrrha groups compared with the CYP-induced acute IC/PBS group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: frankincense and myrrha modulate urothelial wound healing, which ameliorates typical features of acute IC/PBS in rats.

Thyroid function may alter carbohydrate metabolism via influence of insulin, which may in terms of derangement of thyroid function and insulin function result in the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). We investigated the association of thyroid disorders with T2D by a cohort study of the Taiwan nationwide health insurance database.A sub-dataset of the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) was used in this study. The thyroid disease (both hyper- and hypo-thyroidism) group was chosen from patients older than 18 years and newly diagnosed between 2000 and 2012. The control group consisted of randomly selected patients who never been diagnosed with thyroid disease and 4-fold size frequency matched with the thyroid disease group. The event of this cohort was T2D (ICD-9-CM 250.x1, 250.x2). Primary analysis was performed by comparing the thyroid disease group to the control group and the second analysis was performed by comparing the hyperthyroidism subgroup, hypothyroidism subgroup, and control group.The occurrence of T2D in the thyroid disease group was higher than the control group with hazard ratio (HR) of 1.23 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.16-1.31]. Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism were significantly higher than control. Significantly higher HR was also seen in female patients, age category of 18 to 39-year-old (y/o) and 40 to 64 y/o subgroups. Higher occurrence of T2D was also seen in thyroid disease patients without comorbidity than in the control group with HR of 1.47 (95% CI = 1.34-1.60). The highest HR was found in the half-year follow-up.There was a relatively high risk of T2D development in patients with thyroid dysfunctions, especially in the period of 0.5 to 1 year after presentation of thyroid dysfunctions. The results suggest performing blood sugar tests in patients with thyroid diseases for early detection and treatment of T2D.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been prescribed for the treatment of stone disease for thousands of years. Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen) was previously shown to have potential for treatment of stone disease in animal and clinical studies. In this study, we further studied the antiurolithiasis effect of Danshen in a fly model. Wild-type male Drosophila melanogaster CS flies were used in this study, with 0.25% ethylene glycol (EG) as a lithogenic agent. 2% potassium citrate (K-citrate) was the positive control agent for prevention (all agents added at the start of experiment) and treatment (drugs added after 2-week addition of lithogenic agent) studies compared with 15, 30, and 60 µg/ml of Danshen extract. In the prevention study, both 2% K-citrate and Danshen (30 and 60 µg/ml) significantly inhibited EG-induced calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystal formation. In the treatment study, only 2% K-citrate and high-dose of Danshen (60 µg/ml) significantly inhibited EG-induced CaOx crystal formation. Survival analysis for EG with Danshen was compared with that for EG with K-citrate. The mean lifespan was significantly reduced by administration of EG, and the results in the Danshen group were similar to those in the control group. In conclusion, Danshen revealed both preventive and treatment effects on CaOx crystal formation in a fly model.

INTRODUCTION: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a progressive, prolonged, and often irreversible side effect of many chemotherapeutic agents. The development of neuropathic pain is still poorly managed by clinically available drugs at present. METHODS: In this mini-review, we summarized the current knowledge of pathobiology for CIPN, and selected evidence on the application of complementary therapies in experimental studies. RESULTS: Medicinal plants are considered to be the most common complementary therapy modalities for CIPN. Therefore, we identified ten medicinal herbal extracts as well as their phytochemicals, and three herbal formulas. Multiple complementary therapies have been used and studied for decades, and their effects against CIPN are focus on anti-oxidative activity. However, there is still controversial due to the diverse manifestations of different antineoplastic agents and complex drug interactions. CONCLUSIONS: Novel therapies or drugs that have proven to be effective in animals require further investigation, so confirmation of their efficacy and safety will require time.
