RESUMEN

The widespread use of petroleum-based plastic mulch in agriculture has accelerated white and microplastic pollution while posing a severe agroecological challenge due to its difficulty in decomposing in the natural environment. However, endowing mulch film with degradability and growth cycle adaptation remains elusive due to the inherent non-degradability of petroleum-based plastics severely hindering its applications. This work reports polylactic acids hyperbranched composite mulch (PCP) and measured biodegradation behavior under burial soil, seawater, and ultraviolet (UV) aging to understand the biodegradation kinetics and to increase their sustainability in the agriculture field. Due to high interfacial interactions between polymer and nanofiler, the resultant PCP mulch significantly enhances crystallization ability, hydrophilicity, and mechanical properties. PCP mulch can be scalable-manufactured to exhibit modulated degradation performance under varying degradation conditions and periods while concurrently enhancing crop growth (wheat). Thus, such mulch with excellent performance can reduce labor costs and the environmental impact of waste mulch disposal to replace traditional mulch for sustainable agricultural production.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the 5Ts teach-back(5Ts) to improve oral nutritional supplements (ONS) compliance of discharged patients after gastric cancer surgery. SETTING AND METHODS: Patients were recruited from the Bethune First Hospital of Jilin University. The patients were randomly assigned to 5Ts (n = 54) and routine health education (n = 54). Weekly ONS compliance was collected by "weekly ONS diary." ONS knowledge, health literacy, and health education satisfaction were collected at baseline and 5 weeks after discharge. Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test, and T test were used for data analysis. RESULTS: At the end of the intervention, there were 41 and 40 patients in intervention and control group. 5Ts significantly improve ONS compliance, ONS knowledge level (P = 0.000), health literacy level (P = 0.011), and health education satisfaction (P = 0.009) of patients. At the end of follow-up, there were 30 and 27 patients in two groups, and no significant difference in ONS compliance (P = 0.728). CONCLUSION: The 5Ts can significantly improve patients' ONS compliance and the effect of health education. RESUMEN

AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of abdominal massage (AM) on feeding intolerance (FI) in patients receiving enteral nutrition (EN). DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: We searched seven electronic databases to September 2021. STATA and RevMan were used to analyse the data. RESULTS: Eleven studies were included. The results revealed that AM could significantly reduce gastric residual volume and abdominal circumference difference, and reduce the incidence of gastric retention, vomiting, abdominal distention (all p < 0.001), diarrhoea (p = 0.02) and constipation (p = 0.002) in the experimental group. One study reported the incidence of aspiration in the control group was higher, but this was not statistically significant (p = 0.07). The meta-regression analysis showed there was a statistically significant correlation between intervention personnel and gastric residual volume (p = 0.035). CONCLUSION: AM could reduce the amount and incidence of gastric retention and the changes in abdominal circumference, and significantly reduce the incidence of gastrointestinal symptoms, without increasing the incidence of aspiration for EN patients. No Patient or Public Contribution.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Adherence to oral nutritional supplement therapy among postoperative patients with gastric cancer is low. There is little knowledge about patients' priorities and needs regarding oral nutritional supplement therapy. The discrete choice experiment is an innovative method used to elicit patients' preferences. Good practice guidelines emphasize that the development of attributes and levels is a fundamentally important process. OBJECTIVE: To comprehensively describe the identification, refinement, and selection of attributes and levels for a discrete choice experiment. METHODS: A mixed-methods approach, consisting of three consecutive steps: a literature review, in-depth interviews, and focus groups. First, the literature review allowed quick identification of attributes and levels. Then, 15 in-depth interviews were conducted to gather a rich description of the experience of patients taking oral nutritional supplements after gastrectomy and to verify and enrich the attributes and levels list. Finally, four focus group participants discussed the wording of the attributes and levels and reduced the number of attributes to manageable numbers through voting ranking methods. RESULTS: Following the literature review and qualitative data collection, eight attributes were finally generated, each with two to three levels. The following attributes were included: 1) information provider; 2) health guidance approach; 3) adverse reactions; 4) flavor; 5) follow-up method; 6) follow-up frequency; 7) psychological support; 8) cost. These attributes covered the important attributes of nutritional preparations and health guidance included in ONS therapy that were relevant to patients. CONCLUSIONS: This study's mixed-methods approach has been found highly suitable to identify, refine and select attributes and levels for a discrete choice experiment. The three methods have pros and cons, and they complement each other, especially the analysis of qualitative data led to a deeper and broader understanding of attributes and levels.

RESUMEN

PURPOSES: Patients after gastrectomy have poor compliance with oral nutritional supplement (ONS) therapy. Incorporating patient preferences into treatment decisions allows possible product improvements or treatment focus adjustments. The purpose of this research was to investigate the preferences for ONS therapy among postoperative patients with gastric cancer, and to provide person-centered oral nutrition management strategies. METHODS: A discrete choice experiment was designed and implemented within a Chinese cancer population. The survey was administered via paper-based questionnaires during face-to-face interviews with assistance from health professionals. A mixed logit model was used to estimate respondents' preferences for different levels of nutrition therapy attributes. RESULTS: One hundred ninety respondents valued "Adverse reactions-almost none" (ß 3.43 [SE, 0.28]) the most, followed by "Flavor-good taste" (ß 0.68 [SE, 0.13]) and "Follow-up frequency-once every 2 weeks" (ß 0.52 [SE, 0.13]), and were willing to pay more for these attribute levels. Respondents would be 93.73% more likely to accept a nutrition therapy program if there were almost no adverse reactions compared to the frequent adverse reactions. CONCLUSIONS: Health professionals should pay attention to the management and prevention of adverse reactions when prescribing nutritional products, and provide diversified ONS products when necessary to meet patient preferences. When formulating intervention strategies, health professionals should also consider the different characteristics of patients, acknowledge the importance of the role of nurse specialists in a novel model of multidisciplinary nutritional care, standardize ONS information, follow up regularly, and encourage patients' families to participate in daily nutrition care.

RESUMEN

Polygonatum odoratum (Mill.) Druce (Asparagaceae, Asparagales) is a widely cultivated medicinal herb in China. However, this useful herb is understudied despite being known as a medicinal resource with top grade medical and edible properties since long. In this study, P. odoratum and four cultivars were investigated. The variations in morphological characteristics and vegetative phases of each cultivar were observed. For genetic aspect, the plastid genome of P. odoratum varies in length from 154,569 bp to 155,491 bp, containing a large single-copy region of 83,486-84,459 bp, a small single-copy region of 18,292-18,471 bp, and two inverted repeats of 26,302-26,370 bp. A total of 131 genes were predicted, including 85 protein-coding, 38 tRNA, and eight rRNA genes. Genome comparisons revealed a slight variation in the sequence across the five accessions, but two highly variable regions (trnC-petN and rpl32-trnL) were detected when comparing the four different cultivars. For the RAD-seq markers, a total of 33.64 Gb of clean data, with an average value of 1.08 Gb per sample, were analyzed for the presence of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Well-resolved phylogenies of the P. odoratum cultivars are constructed; the nonmonophyletic relationship in the plastome-based phylogenetic trees, yet monophyletic form in the RAD-based linkage map suggested possibility of hybrid cultivar for P. odoratum "Dazhu" (GDDZ), which was further supported by morphological observations. Quality assessment based on the standards of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia on Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma (POR) on the four cultivars used in this study recorded that PORs from P. odoratum "Zhongzhu" (GDZZ) met the minimum criteria for the acceptance as raw material for medicinal drug production. This study has provided insights on the morphological variations, genetic background, and medicinal qualities of P. odoratum cultivars that could be explored for future genetic improvement as well as breeding programs of P. odoratum for POR production.

RESUMEN

To analyze the sediment phosphorus (P) fractions and sorption characteristics and P release from sediment of reservoir in Yangtze estuary, the sediment was investigated during April, 2011 to January, 2012. Results of chemical fractionation analysis showed that total P (TP) content in sediment ranged from 535.07 to 910.9 mg x kg(-1), inorganic P (IP) was a dominant component of TP and the content of organic P (OP) was low. IP presented in the form of P bounded to calcium ( HCl-P) and dominated 75.57% of TP. The batch experiments showed that sediments had the maximum P adsorption capacity from 9.78 to 39.84 mg x kg(-1), sorption data fitted the modified Langmuir isotherm model. However, EPC0 ( equilibrium phosphorus concentration) in all sampling sites was higher than the soluble-reactive P concentration in water column, which was from 0.024-0.12 mg x L(-1). Accordingly, the sediments from those sampling sites would release phosphorus into the overlying water as a P release source. The maximum released amount from sediment was 11.03 mg x kg(-1) about 6 hours. Correlation between P released amount and NaOH-P was found (P < 0.01), and sediment P release would mainly originate from the NaOH-P, OP and HCl-P fraction. It is evident that the inherent phosphorus present in sediments would be a major threat to the water quality in Yangtze River estuary reservoir.

RESUMEN

The effects of luteolin on the proliferation of A549 cells were evaluated by MTT and clone formation assays. DNA ploidy and apoptotic cell percentage were calculated by flow cytometry. The expression of Bax, Bcl-xl, Bcl-2, Mcl-1, caspase-9, caspase-3, and PARP was analyzed by Western blotting. The membrane potential of mitochondria was detected by JC-1 fluorescence microscopy assay. Our results demonstrated that luteolin could inhibit the proliferation of A549 cells via induction of apoptosis, with the evidence of characteristic morphological changes of apoptosis in the nucleus. Furthermore, DNA flow cytometric analysis indicated that luteolin induced a S phase arrest of the cell cycle. The membrane potential of mitochondria was decreased. The protein levels of Bax, Bcl-xl, Bcl-2, Mcl-1, caspase-9, caspase-3, and PARP were activated after treatment with luteolin. Luteolin can inhibit the proliferation of A549 cells and trigger mitochondria- dependent apoptosis in them.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To observe the therapeutic efficacy and safety of amiodarone combined with Shenmai Injection (参麦注射液) on atrial fibrillation. METHODS: A total of 351 patients with atrial fibrillation caused by cardiovascular diseases and idiopathic atrial fibrillation were assigned to amiodarone group (control group, 128 cases) and amiodarone combined with Shenmai Injection group (treatment group, 223 cases). The patients in the control group received intravenous injection of 150 mg amiodarone in 10 min, followed by intravenous drip infusion at 1 mg /min and 6 h later at 0.5 mg /min until 48 h or cardioversion. The patients in the treatment group received the same treatment of amiodarone, while in addition, they received an injection of Shenmai Injection of 100 mL simultaneously. Blood pressure, ventricular rate, and cardioversion were observed. RESULTS: The total efficiency rate was 98% (control group) and 99% (treatment group) (P>0.05). The mean ventricular rate decreased 23% and 31% in the control group and the treatment group, respectively (P<0.05). The mean cardioversion time of the two groups was 570±211 min and 351±123 min, respectively (P<0.05). Only mild side effects were observed in both groups. CONCLUSION: Compared with amiodarone, amiodarone combined with Shenmai Injection takes effect more quickly with low side effects on the treatment of atrial fibrillation.
