Cancer treatment-induced bone loss (CTBL) is associated with anti-tumor treatments, including endocrine therapies, chemotherapeutic treatments, radiotherapy, glucocorticoids, and tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Osteoporosis, characterized by the loss of bone mass, can increase the risk of fractures, leading to mortality and long-term disability, even after cancer remission. Cancer and osteoporosis have marked clinical and pathogenetic similarities. Both have a multifactorial etiology, affect the geriatric population, and markedly influence quality of life. Lifestyle management, including calcium and vitamin D supplementation, is recommended but the supporting evidence is limited. Oral and injectable bisphosphonates are effective for osteoporosis and malignant bone disease. Bisphosphonates increase bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with CTBL. Denosumab is also used in the management of CTBL; in clinical trials, it improved BMD and reduced the risk of fracture. Currently, there are no bone anabolic therapies for patients with cancer. Appropriate therapies are necessary to maintain optimal bone health, particularly in patients at heightened risk.

In semi-enclosed coastal brackish lakes, changes in dissolved oxygen in the bottom layer due to salinity stratification can affect the flux of phosphorus (P) at the sediment-water interface, resulting in short- and long-term water quality fluctuations in the water column. In this study, the physicochemical properties of the water layers and sediments at five sites in Saemangeum Lake were analyzed in spring and autumn for four years, and phosphorus release experiments from sediments were conducted for 20 days under oxic and anoxic conditions during the same period. Sediment total phosphorus (T-P) decreased in autumn compared to spring due to mineralization of organic bound phosphorus, which was the most dominant P fraction. This may be related to the increase in the ratio of PO4-P to T-P in bottom waters in autumn, when hypoxia was frequently observed. The difference in P fluxes between oxic and anoxic conditions indicated that during autumn, as compared to spring, the release of phosphorus could have a more immediate impact on the water column during the formation of hypoxia/anoxia. The main factors influencing changes in P fluxes from sediments were identified through redundancy analysis. Additionally, based on the results of multiple regression analysis, sediment TOC, sediment non-apatite phosphorus, porewater pH, and porewater PO4-P were determined to be the most significant factors affecting P fluxes from sediments, depending on the season or redox conditions. Recently, the increased influx of seawater into Saemangeum Lake has been shown to contribute to water quality improvements in the water column due to a strong dilution effect. However, the sediment environment has shifted towards a more reduced state, leading to increased P release under anoxic conditions. Therefore, for future water quality management within the lake, it is necessary to consistently address the recurring hypoxia and continuously monitor phosphorus dynamics.

7-MEGATM is a food product made from purified Alaska pollack fish oil containing palmitoleic acid (16:1), commonly referred to as omega-7. We sought to quantitatively evaluate whether this substance inhibits skin aging. A total of 101 middle-aged females were randomly allocated to the intervention (N = 50) or placebo group (N = 51). Each participant was advised to take either 500 mg of 7-MEGATM or a placebo twice daily for 12 weeks. The primary outcomes were the degree of improvement in wrinkles and the degree of moisture filling after consumption for 12 weeks compared to baseline. The secondary outcomes were improvement in skin wrinkles; moisture changes at 4 and 8 weeks from baseline; changes in transdermal water loss, skin elasticity, the melanin index, the erythema index, and the Global Photo Damage Score. We found a significant improvement in skin wrinkles and elasticity at 12 weeks in the 7-MEGATM-consuming group compared to that in the placebo group; skin moisture, elasticity, and the melanin index were also improved. No supplement-related adverse reactions were observed and 7-MEGATM was identified as safe. 7-MEGATM was effective for human skin function in terms of wrinkles, moisture, elasticity, and melanin production and may be useful as a skin nutritional supplement.

This study presents the catalytic pyrolysis of microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris), using pure CH4 and H2-rich gas evolved from CH4 decomposition on three different HZSM-5 catalysts loaded with Zn, Ga, and Pt, aimed specifically at producing high-value mono-aromatics such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX). In comparison with that for the typical inert N2 environment, a pure CH4 environment increased the bio-oil yield from 32.4 wt% to 37.4 wt% probably due to hydrogen and methyl radical insertion in the bio-oil components. Furthermore, the addition of bimetals further increased bio-oil yield. For example, ZnPtHZ led to a bio-oil yield of 47.7 wt% in pure CH4. ZnGaHZ resulted in the maximum BTEX yield (6.68 wt%), which could be explained by CH4 activation, co-aromatization, and hydrodeoxygenation. The BTEX yield could be further increased to 7.62 wt% when pyrolysis was conducted in H2-rich gas evolved from CH4 decomposition over ZnGaHZ, as rates of aromatization and hydrodeoxygenation were relatively high under this condition. This study experimentally validated that the combination of ZnGaHZ and CH4 decomposition synergistically increases BTEX production using C. vulgaris.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a prevalent form of leukemia in adults. As its survival rate is low, there is an urgent need for new therapeutic options. In AML, FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) mutations are common and have negative outcomes. However, current FLT3-targeting agents, Midostaurin and Gilteritinib, face two significant issues, specifically the emergence of acquired resistance and drug-related adverse events leading to treatment failure. Rearranged during transfection (RET), meanwhile, is a proto-oncogene linked to various types of cancer, but its role in AML has been limited. A previous study showed that activation of RET kinase enhances FLT3 protein stability, leading to the promotion of AML cell proliferation. However, no drugs are currently available that target both FLT3 and RET. This study introduces PLM-101, a new therapeutic option derived from the traditional Chinese medicine indigo naturalis with potent in vitro and in vivo anti-leukemic activities. PLM-101 potently inhibits FLT3 kinase and induces its autophagic degradation via RET inhibition, providing a superior mechanism to that of FLT3 single-targeting agents. Single- and repeated-dose toxicity tests conducted in the present study showed no significant drug-related adverse effects. This study is the first to present a new FLT3/RET dual-targeting inhibitor, PLM-101, that shows potent anti-leukemic activity and fewer adverse effects. PLM-101, therefore, should be considered for use as a potential therapeutic agent for AML.

Codonopsis lanceolata (Campanulaceae) is a perennial plant commonly known as the bonnet bellflower. This species is widely used in traditional medicine and is considered to have multiple medicinal properties. In this study, we found that shoots and roots of C. lanceolata contained various types of free triterpenes (taraxerol, ß-amyrin, α-amyrin, and friedelin) and triterpene acetates (taraxerol acetate, ß-amyrin acetate, and α-amyrin acetate). The content of triterpenes and triterpene acetates by GC analysis was higher in the shoot than in the roots. To investigate the transcriptional activity of genes involved in triterpenes and triterpene acetate biosynthesis, we performed de novo transcriptome analysis of shoots and roots of C. lanceolata by sequencing using the Illumina platform. A total of 39,523 representative transcripts were obtained. After functional annotation of the transcripts, the differential expression of genes involved in triterpene biosynthetic pathways was investigated. Generally, the transcriptional activity of unigenes in the upstream region (MVA and MEP pathway) of triterpene biosynthetic pathways was higher in shoots than in roots. Various triterpene synthases (2,3-oxidosqualene cyclase, OSC) participate to produce triterpene skeletons by the cyclization of 2,3-oxidosqualene. A total of fifteen contigs were obtained in annotated OSCs in the representative transcripts. Functional characterization of four OSC sequences by heterologous expression in yeast revealed that ClOSC1 was determined as taraxerol synthase, and ClOSC2 was a mixed-amyrin synthase producing α-amyrin and ß-amyrin. Five putative contigs of triterpene acetyltransferases showed high homology to the lettuce triterpene acetyltransferases. Conclusively, this study provides the basis of molecular information, particularly for the biosynthesis of triterpenes and triterpene acetates in C. lanceolata.

BACKGROUND: One-year S-1 or six-month capecitabine/oxaliplatin (CAPOX) has been the standard adjuvant chemotherapy for gastric cancer (GC). We investigated outcomes according to the cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy, using data from the Korean Health Insurance and Assessment Service. METHODS: A total of 20,552 patients, including 13,614 patients who received S-1 and 6,938 patients who received CAPOX extracted from 558,442 patients were retrospectively analyzed. The five-year overall survival rate was evaluated according to the duration of adjuvant chemotherapy. RESULTS: The five-year overall survival rate gradually increased according to the increase in adjuvant chemotherapy cycles in both the S-1 (≤ 5 cycles: 48.4%, hazard ratio [HR] 4.06, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.74-4.40, P < 0.0001; 5 < cycles ≤ 6: 55.4%, HR 3.08, 95% CI 2.65-3.57, P < 0.0001; 6 < cycles ≤ 7: 64.1%, HR 2.11, 95% CI 1.84-2.41, P < 0.0001; 7 < cycles < 8: 71.1%, HR 1.60, 95% CI 1.39-1.84, P < 0.0001; ≥ 8 cycles: 77.9%) and the CAPOX groups (≤ 4 cycles: 43.5%, HR 3.20, 95% CI 2.84-3.61, P < 0.0001; 5 cycles: 45.3%, HR 2.63, 95% CI 2.11-3.27, P < 0.0001; 6 cycles: 47.1%, HR 2.09, 95% CI 1.76-2.49, P < 0.0001; 7 cycles: 55.3%, HR 1.63, 95% CI 1.35-1.96, P < 0.0001; ≥ 8 cycles: 67.2%). CONCLUSIONS: Reducing the treatment cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy in GC with S-1 or CAPOX showed inferior survival outcomes. Completing the standard duration of adjuvant chemotherapy with S-1 or CAPOX would be strongly recommended.

Although there are hundreds of mobile yoga apps in the app market space, the quality and usefulness of these apps have not been systematically tested. We conducted a structured quality evaluation of apps from the Google Play store, applying the validated Mobile Application Rating Scale (MARS) by two independent raters. 18 out of 250 apps were identified for evaluation after applying inclusion/exclusion criteria. The mean MARS score is 4.11 (out of 5) with SD = 0.38. There was high interrater reliability (ICC = .88; 95% CI 0.85-0.91). Apps performed well on functionality and aesthetics. However, there is much room for improvement in information and engagement. Designers and researchers should focus on improving user engagement and building the evidence base for informational content provided in apps.

The continuous spread and evolution of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and the rapid surge in infection cases in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) evoke a dire need for effective therapeutics. In this study, we explored the inhibitory potential of a library of 605 phytocompounds, selected from Indian medicinal plants with reported antiviral and anti-inflammatory activities, against the receptor-binding domain of spike proteins of the SARS-CoV-2 wild-type and the variants of concern, including variants B.1.1.7 (Alpha), B.1.351 (Beta), P.1 (Gamma), B.1.617.2 (Delta), and B.1.1.529 (Omicron). Our approach was based on extensive molecular docking, assessment of drug-likeness, and robust molecular dynamics simulations. We also identified promising inhibitory candidates against the host (human) proteins associated with SARS-CoV-2 spike activation and attachment, namely, ACE2 receptor, proteases TMPRSS2 and CTSL, and the endocytic regulator AAK1. In addition, we screened promising inhibitory compounds against the human proinflammatory cytokines- IL-6, IL-1ß, TNF-α, and IFN-γ, that are associated with the adverse cytokine storm in COVID-19 patients. Our analysis returned an encouraging list of promising inhibitory candidates that includes: abietatriene against the spike proteins of the SARS-CoV-2 wild-type and the variants of concern; taraxerol against the human ACE2, CTSL and TNF-α; ß-amyrin against the human TMPRSS2; cynaroside against the human AAK1 and IL-1ß; and friedelin against the human IL-6 and IFN-γ. Our findings provide substantial evidence for the inhibitory potential of these compounds and encourage further in vitro and in vivo studies to validate their use as safe and effective therapeutics against COVID-19.

Oleanane-type ginsenosides are highly biologically active substances in Panax ginseng, a popular Chinese dietary plant. Lack of key enzymes for glycosylation reactions has hindered de novo synthesis of these bioactive molecules. We mined candidate glycosyltransferases (GTs) of the ginseng database by combining key metabolites and transcriptome coexpression analyses and verified their function using in vitro enzymatic assays. The PgCSyGT1, a cellulose synthase-like GT rather than a UDP-dependent glucuronosyltransferase (UGT), was verified as the key enzyme for transferring a glucuronosyl moiety to the free C3-OH of oleanolic acid to synthesize calenduloside E. Two UGTs (PgUGT18 and PgUGT8) were first identified as, respectively, catalyzing the glycosylation reaction of the second sugar moiety of C3 and the C28 in the oleanane-type ginsenoside biosynthetic pathway. Then, we integrated these GTs in combinations into Saccharomyces cerevisiae genome and realized de novo biosynthesis of oleanane-type ginsenosides with a yield of 1.41 µg/L ginsenoside Ro in shake flasks. This report provides a basis for effective biosynthesis of diverse oleanane-type ginsenosides in microbial cell factories.

BACKGROUND: In animals, weaning stress is the first and most critical stress. Weaning can negatively affect the growth performance of animals physically, psychologically, and pathologically. Our previous studies on the HT-29 cell line and early-weaned rats demonstrated that adequate sophorolipid (SPL) supplementation in feed could enhance the mucin-producing and wound healing capacities of the gut defense system by modulating gut microbiota. METHODS: We conducted an experiment with one hundred forty 21-day-old early weaned piglets (L x Y x D). They were allocated into 4 treatment and 7 replications (4 pigs per pen) according to their initial body weight. Body weight and feed intake were measured biweekly during experimental period. After 6 weeks, 28 pigs were randomly selected and sacrificed to collect plasma, jejunum, and cecal content samples. RESULTS: Dietary SPL supplementation at 5 and 10 mg/kg quadratically increased the average daily gain during the experimental period in the treatment groups when compared with the control group. The albumin levels of piglets fed with the SPL supplemented diet were downregulated to the normal range. Moreover, in feed, SPL supplementation at 5 and 10 mg/kg improved jejunal histological indices and gene expression levels related to mucin secretion and local inflammation markers. Consistent with these results, adequate SPL supplementation (5 and 10 mg/kg) increased the population of Prevotella, a beneficial bacterium, and its short-chain fatty acid production in the ceca of piglets. CONCLUSIONS: The occurrence of diarrhea after weaning in piglets could be reduced by feeding a 10 ppm of SPL supplemented diet which improves the gut defense system by improving the microbial population and enhancing mucin layer integrity.

BACKGROUND: The titrated extract of Centella asiatica (CA) has received much attention as a cosmeceutical ingredient owing to its anti-wrinkle effect. However, due to the low solubility and high molecular weight of pharmacologically active constituents, including asiatic acid (AA), madecassic acid (MA), and asiaticoside (AS), it is challenging to fabricate high-payload topical preparations of CA with satisfactory skin absorption profiles. PURPOSE: This study aimed to design a high-payload topical preparation of CA using nanocrystallization technique and to evaluate its skin absorption profile and local tolerability. METHODS: High-payload nanocrystal suspensions (NSs) were prepared using lab-scale bead-milling technology, by adjusting the type and amount of suspending agent, CA content, type of vehicle, and milling speed. CA-loaded NSs were characterized in terms of morphology, particle size, crystallinity, and in vitro dissolution pattern. Skin absorption of CA nanocrystals was evaluated using a vertical Franz diffusion cell mounted with porcine skin. In vivo skin irritation following topical application of high-payload NS was assessed in normal rats. RESULTS: The optimized NS system, composed of 10% (w/v) CA, 0.5% polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) K30 as steric stabilizer, and 89.5% of distilled water, was characterized as follows: spherical or elliptical in shape, 200 nm in size, with low crystallinity. The in vitro dissolution of AA or MA from NSs was markedly faster compared to raw material, under sink condition. Penetration of AA, MA, and AS in the porcine skin was markedly elevated using the high-payload NS formula, providing 5-, 4-, and 4.5-fold higher accumulation in skin layer, compared to that of the marketed cream formula (CA 1%, Madeca cream). Moreover, topical application of high-payload NS was tolerable, showing neither erythema nor oedema in normal rats. CONCLUSION: The novel NS system is expected to be a virtuous approach for offering a better skin absorption of CA, without using an excess quantity of solubilizers.

The present investigation deals with the adsorptive removal of crude petroleum oil from the water surface using coconut oil-modified pinewood biochar. Biochar generated at higher pyrolysis temperature (700 °C) revealed higher fatty acid-binding efficiency responsible for the excellent hydrophobicity of the biochar. Fatty acids composition attached to the biochar produced at 700 °C was (mg g-1 BC) lauric acid (9.024), myristic acid (5.065), palmitic acid (2.769), capric acid (1.639), oleic acid (1.362), stearic acid (1.114), and linoleic acid (0.130). Simulation of the experimental adsorption data of pristine and modified pinewood biochar generated at 700 °C offered the best fit to pseudo-first-order kinetics (R2 > 0.97) and Langmuir isotherm model (R2 > 0.99) based on the highest regression coefficients. Consequently, the adsorption process was mainly driven by surface hydrophobic interactions including π-π electron-donor-acceptor between electron-rich (π-donor) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the crude oil and biochar (π-acceptor). A maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) of 5.315 g g-1 was achieved by modified floating biochar within 60 min. Whereas the reusability testing revealed 49.39% and 51.40% was the adsorption efficiency of pristine and modified biochar at the fifth adsorption-desorption cycle.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Anethum sowa Roxb. ex Fleming (Syn. Peucedanum sowa Roxb. ex Fleming, Family: Apiaceae) is a pharmacologically important as aromatic and medicinal plant. Various parts of this plant are used in traditional medicine systems for carminative, uterine and colic pain, digestion disorder, flatulence in babies, appetite-stimulating agent and used to treat mild flue and cough. The essential oil is used for aromatherapy. It is also used as a spice for food flavouring and culinary preparations in many Asian and European countries. AIM OF THE REVIEW: This review aims to provide a comprehensive and critical assessment from the reported traditional and pharmaceutical uses and pharmacological activities of the extracts, essential oil and phytoconstituents with emphasis on its therapeutic potential as well as toxicological evaluation of A. sowa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Online search engines such as SciFinder®, GoogleScholar®, ResearchGate®, Web of Science®, Scopus®, PubMed and additional data from books, proceedings and local prints were searched using relevant keywords and terminologies related to A. sowa for critical analyses. RESULTS: The literature studies demonstrated that A. sowa possesses several ethnopharmacological activities, including pharmaceutical prescriptions, traditional applications, and spice in food preparations. The phytochemical investigation conducted on crude extracts has been characterized and identified various classes of compounds, including coumarins, anthraquinone, terpenoids, alkaloid, benzodioxoles, phenolics, polyphenols, phenolic and polyphenols, fatty acids, phthalides and carotenoids. The extracts and compounds from the different parts of A. sowa showed diverse in vitro and in vivo biological activities including antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, analgesic and anti-inflammatory, Alzheimer associating neuromodulatory, cytotoxic, anticancer, antidiabetes, insecticidal and larvicidal. CONCLUSION: A. sowa is a valuable medicinal plant which is especially used in food flavouring and culinary preparations. This review summarized the pertinent information on A. sowa and its traditional and culinary uses, as well as potential pharmacological properties of essential oils, extracts and isolated compounds. The traditional uses of A. sowa are supported by in vitro/vivo pharmacological studies; however, further investigation on A. sowa should be focused on isolation and identification of more active compounds and establish the links between the traditional uses and reported pharmacological activities with active compounds, as well as structure-activity relationship and in vivo mechanistic studies before integrated into the medicine. The toxicological report confirmed its safety. Nonetheless, pharmacokinetic evaluation tests to validate its bioavailability should be encouraged.

This work focused on the impacts of FeCl3 impregnation ratio on the properties of FeCl3-activated bermudagrass (BG)-derived biochars (IA-BCs), adsorption of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) onto IA-BCs and regeneration of SMX-spent IA-BC. Compared with the control BC (85.82 m2/g), IA-BCs made via pyrolysis with FeCl3 to BG mass ratio between 1 and 3 (1-3 g FeCl3/g BG) resulted in significantly enhancing surface area (1014-1035 m2/g), hydrophobicity, Fe content in IA-BCs (3.87-7.27%), and graphitized carbon. The properties of IA-BCs supported magnetic separation and higher adsorption (32-265 mg SMX/g BC) than the control BC (6-14 mg SMX/g BC) at various pH. Adsorption experiments indicated various adsorption mechanisms between SMX and IA-BCs via π-π EDA, hydrophobic interactions, and hydrogen bond with intraparticle diffusion limitation. The adsorption was also found to be spontaneous and exothermic. The IA-BC made at FeCl3 to BG mass ratio of 2 (IA-BC2.0) showed the maximum adsorption capacity for SMX (253 mg SMX/g BC) calculated from Langmuir isotherm model. Additionally, both NaOH desorption and thermal oxidation showed effective regeneration of SMX-saturated IA-BC2.0 over multiple cycles. After three cycles of adsorption-regeneration, 64% and 62% of regeneration efficiencies were still achieved under thermal treatment at 300 °C and desorption with 0.1 M NaOH solution, respectively, indicating a cost-efficient adsorbent for the elimination of SMX in water.

Deinoxanthin, a xanthophyll derived from Deinococcus species, is a unique organic compound that provides greater antioxidant effects compared to other carotenoids due to its superior scavenging activity against singlet oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. Therefore, it has attracted significant attention as a next-generation organic compound that has great potential as a natural ingredient in a food supplements. Although the microbial identification of deinoxanthin has been identified, mass production has not yet been achieved. Here, we report, for the first time, the development of an engineered extremophilic microorganism, Deinococcus radiodurans strain R1, that is capable of producing deinoxanthin through rational metabolic engineering and process optimization. The genes crtB and dxs were first introduced into the genome to reinforce the metabolic flux towards deinoxanthin. The optimal temperature was then identified through a comparative analysis of the mRNA expression of the two genes, while the carbon source was further optimized to increase deinoxanthin production. The final engineered D. radiodurans strain R1 was able to produce 394 ± 17.6 mg/L (102 ± 11.1 mg/g DCW) of deinoxanthin with a yield of 40.4 ± 1.2 mg/g sucrose and a productivity of 8.4 ± 0.2 mg/L/h from 10 g/L of sucrose. The final engineered strain and the strategies developed in the present study can act as the foundation for the industrial application of extremophilic microorganisms.

Early prevention of sarcopenia could be an important strategy for muscle retention, but most studies have focused on subjects aged 65 or older. Therefore, in this study we investigated the effects of leucine-enriched protein supplementation on muscle condition in a sample including late middle-aged adults. A 12-week intervention was performed for 120 healthy community-dwelling adults by providing either leucine-enriched protein supplement [leucine 3 g, protein mixture (casein 50% + whey 40% + soy 10%) 17 g, vitamin D 800IU (20 µg), calcium 300 mg, fat 1.1 g, carbohydrate 2.5 g] or isocaloric carbohydrate supplement twice per day. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI) and lean body mass (LBM) were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. A total of 111 participants completed the study, with a dropout rate of 9.2%. LBM normalized by height and body weight (LBM/Wt) was significantly increased (p < 0.001) in the intervention group (0 wk: 633.9 ± 8.5 vs. 12 wk 636.9 ± 8.4 in the intervention group; 0 wk: 638.6 ± 8.3 vs. 12 wk: 632.9 ± 8.1 in the control group). In subgroup analyses, significant differences remained only in subjects between 50 and 64 years of age. We concluded that leucine-enriched protein supplementation can have beneficial effects by preventing muscle loss, mainly for late middle-aged adults.

BACKGROUND: Components of the metabolic syndrome (MetS), such as elevated fasting glucose levels and abdominal obesity, have been suggested as potential risk factors for pancreatic cancer. However, data are still insufficient to assure the influence of MetS on incident pancreatic cancer. The objective of the current study was to investigate the association between MetS, metabolic components, and the risk of pancreatic cancer. METHODS: In the Korea National Health Information Database, 223,138 individuals who were without pancreatic cancer in 2009 were enrolled and followed until 2013. They were categorized into 4 groups according to the number of baseline metabolic components (0, 1, 2, 3, and 4-5). A multivariate Cox proportional hazard model was used to calculate the adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs for incident pancreatic cancer according to the presence of MetS and the number of metabolic components. In addition, the risk of pancreatic cancer was evaluated in individuals who had a single metabolic component. RESULTS: The presence of MetS was significantly associated with incident pancreatic cancer (adjusted HR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.19-1.81). The group with 4 or 5 baseline metabolic components had a higher risk of pancreatic cancer than the other groups (0 components: reference category; 1 component: adjusted HR, 0.94 [95% CI, 0.61-1.45]; 2 components: adjusted HR, 1.03 [95% CI, 0.68-1.56]; 3 components: adjusted HR, 1.35 [95% CI, 0.89-2.04]; 4-5 components: adjusted HR, 1.64 [95% CI, 1.06-2.51]). Regarding associations between the individual metabolic components and pancreatic cancer, no metabolic component alone had a statistically significant association with pancreatic cancer. CONCLUSIONS: MetS is a potential risk factor for pancreatic cancer. The presence of ≥4 metabolic components leads to a higher risk of pancreatic cancer even within categories of the MetS.

In this study, a heterogeneous catalyst prepared by pyrolysis of waste cork (Quercus suber) was used for the transesterification of waste cooking oil (WCO). Physicochemical properties of the synthesized biochar catalyst were studied using BET, SEM, FTIR, and XRD. The experiment results demonstrate that heterogeneous catalyst synthesized at 600 °C showed maximum fatty acids methyl esters (FAMEs) conversion (98%) at alcohol:oil (25:1), catalyst loading (1.5% w/v) and temperature 65 °C. Biodiesel produced from WCO (Canola oil) mainly composed of FAMEs in following order C18:1 > C18:2 > C16:0 > C18:0 > C20:0. Properties of produced biodiesel were analysed as cetane number (CN) 50.56, higher heating value (HHV) 39.5, kinematic viscosity (ʋ) 3.9, and density (ρ) 0.87.
