RESUMEN

Iron oxide anode materials for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries have garnered extensive attention because of their inexpensiveness, safety, and high theoretical capacity. Nanostructured iron oxide anodes often undergo negative fading, that is, unconventional capacity increase, which results in a capacity increasing upon cycling. However, the detailed mechanism of negative fading still remains unclear, and there is no consensus on the provenance. Herein, we comprehensively investigate the negative fading of iron oxide anodes with a highly ordered mesoporous structure by utilizing advanced synchrotron-based analysis. Electrochemical and structural analyses identified that the negative fading originates from an optimization of the electrolyte-derived surface layer, and the thus formed layer significantly contributes to the structural stability of the nanostructured electrode materials, as well as their cycle stability. This work provides an insight into understanding the origin of negative fading and its influence on nanostructured anode materials.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the relationship between statin benefit groups based on statin-intensity class of drugs and coronary artery calcium score (CACS) using multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) in an asymptomatic Korean population. METHODS: A total of 3914 asymptomatic individuals (mean age: 55 ± 10 years; male: female = 2649: 1265) who underwent MDCT for health examination between January 2009 and December 2012 were retrospectively enrolled. They were categorized into three groups based on statin-intensity class of drugs (high-intensity (n = 1284, 32.8%); moderate-intensity (n = 1602, 40.9%) and low-intensity (n = 931, 23.8%) statin therapy groups) according to the American College of Cardiology (ACC)/American heart Association (AHA) 2013 guideline and the relationship between CACS and statin benefit group was analyzed. The statin benefit group was defined as individuals who should be considered moderate- and high-intensity statin therapy. RESULTS: Ten-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD; 12.6 ± 5.3% vs. 2.9 ± 1.9%, p < 0.001) and CACS (98 ± 270 vs. 3 ± 2, p < 0.001) were significantly higher in the high-intensity group compared to the moderate-intensity statin therapy group. In the high-intensity statin therapy group, age [odds ratio: 1.299 (1.137-1.483), p < 0.001], male gender [odds ratio: 44.252 (1.959-999.784), p = 0.001], and fasting blood glucose [odds ratio: 1.046 (1.007-1.087), p = 0.021] were independent risk factors associated with CACS ≥300 on multivariate logistic regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS: CACS on MDCT might be an important complementary tool for cardiovascular disease risk stratification. This study indicates that individualization of statin therapy as well as lifestyle modification will be useful in asymptomatic individuals, especially those in whom high-intensity statin therapy is required.

Scrotal hyperthermia leads to oxidative stress and apoptosis in spermatogenic cells, which subsequently causes male infertility. In this study, we examined the effects of ß-carotene and/or curcumin on heat-stress- (HS-) induced testicular injuries in mice. ICR male mice (8 weeks old) were consecutively treated with ß-carotene (10 mg/kg) and/or curcumin (20 mg/kg) orally once a day for 14 days and then subjected to single exposure with scrotal HS at 43°C for 15 min on day 7. HS induced a significant reduction in testicular weight, appearance of multinucleated giant cells, and desquamation of germ cells in destructive seminiferous tubules, as well as degenerative Leydig cells. Moreover, HS reduced the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and mRNA levels of mitochondrial SOD, phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase, B-cell lymphoma-extra-large, and 3ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, with increases in lipid peroxidation levels and mRNA levels of BCL2-associated X protein and caspase-3 relative to those of the control group. However, these changes were significantly recovered by combined treatment with ß-carotene and curcumin after HS. These findings indicate that the combined treatment with ß-carotene and curcumin might be a valuable protective agent to ameliorate hyperthermic spermatogenic disorders via its potent antioxidative, antiapoptotic, and androgen synthetic effects.
