RESUMEN

Dam damming has an adverse effect on river connectivity, leading to downstream nutrient transport and ecosystem fragmentation. Dam demolition has already been used as an effective measurement to promote the ecological restoration of rivers. Few studies have analyzed the short-term variations of water quality following dam removal. This study investigated the response of multi-element and multi-form water quality parameters, such as water temperature (TEM), dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP), to the demolition of 4 dams in Chishui River Basin in short term. The study employed Spearman correlation analysis and Generalized Additive Models to identify the critical variables and examine the inter-relationship between these water quality parameters. Our results show that COD, BOD5, and TP increased after two weeks of dam removal, while NH3-N and TN decreased. Dams with larger volumes and higher heights led to more obvious deterioration for DO, COD, and BOD5. We also found that denitrification and resuspension dominantly affect the water quality indicators following dam removal. Denitrification is responsible for downstream TN increase, and resuspension and related sediment transport contribute to downstream TP increase. Our study provides an opportunity to explore the transformation and migration of N and P in reservoirs following dam removal in the short term and presents a scientific basis and new thought for the short-term protection and management following the clean-up and rectification of multiple small hydropower plants.

BACKGROUND: Tumor treating fields (TTFields) is an FDA-approved adjuvant therapy for glioblastoma. The distribution of an applied electric field has been shown to be governed by distinct tissue structures and electrical conductivity. Of all the tissues the skull plays a significant role in modifying the distribution of the electric field due to its large impedance. In this study, we studied how remodeling of the skull would affect the therapeutic outcome of TTFields, using a computational approach. METHODS: Head models were created from the head template ICBM152 and five realistic head models. The electric field distribution was simulated using the default TTFields array layout. To study the impact of the skull on the electric field, we compared three cases, namely, intact skull, defective skull, and insulating process, wherein a thin electrical insulating layer was added between the transducer and the hydrogel. The electric field strength and heating power were calculated using the FEM (finite element method). RESULTS: Removing the skull flap increased the average field strength at the tumor site, without increasing the field strength of "brain". The ATVs of the supratentorial tumors were enhanced significantly. Meanwhile, the heating power of the gels increased, especially those overlapping the skull defect site. Insulation lightly decreased the electric field strength and significantly decreased the heating power in deep tumor models. CONCLUSION: Our simulation results showed that a skull defect was beneficial for superficial tumors but had an adverse effect on deep tumors. Skull removal should be considered as an optional approach in future TTFields therapy to enhance its efficacy. An insulation process could be used as a joint option to reduce the thermogenic effect of skull defect. If excessive increase in heating power is observed in certain patients, insulating material could be used to mitigate overheating without sacrificing the therapeutic effect of TTFields.

BACKGROUND: As one of the vital crops globally, sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) has been one of model crops for conducting metabolome research. Although many studies have focused on understanding bioactive components in specific sugarcane tissues, crucial questions have been left unanswered about the response of metabolites to niche differentiation such as different sugarcane tissues (leaf, stem and root), and soil regions (rhizosphere and bulk) under silicon (Si) amended soils. Here, nontargeted metabolite profiling method was leveraged to assess the similarities and differences in the abundance and community composition of metabolites in the different sugarcane and soil compartments. Identify the compartment-specific expression patterns of metabolites, and their association with cane agronomic traits and edaphic factors. We also investigated the response of sugarcane agronomic traits and edaphic factors to Si amended soil. RESULTS: We found that Si fertilizer exhibited the advantages of overwhelmingly promoting the height and theoretical production of cane, and profoundly increased soil Si content by 24.8 and 27.0%, while soil available potassium (AK) was enhanced by 3.07 and 2.67 folds in the bulk and rhizosphere soils, respectively. It was also noticed that available phosphorus (AP) in the rhizosphere soil tremendously increased by 105.5%. We detected 339 metabolites in 30 samples using LC-MS/MS analyses, 161 of which were classified and annotated, including organooxygen compounds (19.9%), carboxylic acids and derivatives (15.5%), fatty acyls (15.5%), flavonoids (4.4%), phenols (4.4%), and benzene and substituted derivatives (3.7%). In addition, the total percentages covered by these core metabolites in each compartment ranged from 94.0% (bulk soil) to 93.4% (rhizosphere soil), followed by 87.4% (leaf), 81.0% (root) and 80.5% (stem), suggesting that these bioactive compounds may have migrated from the belowground tissues and gradually filtered in various aboveground niches of the plant. We also observed that the variations and enrichment of metabolites abundance and community were compartment-specific. Furthermore, some key bioactive compounds were markedly associated with plant growth parameters and soil edaphic. CONCLUSION: Taken together, we hypothesized that Si utilization can exhibit the advantage of enhancing edaphic factors and cane agronomic traits, and variations in metabolites community are tissue-specific.

BACKGROUND: The pistil is an essential part of flowers that functions in the differentiation of the sexes and reproduction in plants. The stigma on the pistil can accept pollen to allow fertilization and seed development. Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is a dioecious plant, where female flowers exhibit normal pistil, while the male flowers exhibit aborted pistil at a late stage of pistil development. RESULTS: The developmental stages of papaya pistil were analyzed after first dividing it into slices representing the primordium stage 1 (S1), the pre-meiotic stages S2, post-meiotic stage S3, and the mitotic stage S4. The SS scoring algorithm analysis of genes preferentially expressed at different stages revealed differentially expressed genes between male and female flowers. A transcription factor regulatory network for each stage based on the genes that are differentially expressed between male and female flowers was constructed. Some transcription factors related to pistil development were revealed based on the analysis of regulatory networks such as CpAGL11, CpHEC2, and CpSUPL. Based on the specific expression of genes, constructed a gene regulatory subnetwork with CpAGL11-CpSUPL-CpHEC2 functioning as the core. Analysis of the functionally enriched terms in this network reveals several differentially expressed genes related to auxin/ brassinosteroid signal transduction in the plant hormone signal transduction pathway. At the same time, significant differences in the expression of auxin and brassinosteroid synthesis-related genes between male and female flowers at different developmental stages were detected. CONCLUSIONS: The pistil abortion of papaya might be caused by the lack of expression or decreased expression of some transcription factors and hormone-related genes, affecting hormone signal transduction or hormone biosynthesis. Analysis of aborted and normally developing pistil in papaya provided new insights into the molecular mechanism of pistil development and sex differentiation in dioecious papaya.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Bushenjiangya-optimized (BSJYO) granule on left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) in hypertensive (HTN) patients. METHODS: 120 patients diagnosed with HTN plus LVDD were randomly assigned to the BSJYO granule group and placebo group, and all patients received basal western medicine (WM) treatment. After eight weeks of treatment, we evaluated echocardiography, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes, 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure, liver and kidney functions, and adverse events. Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) were collected at 6-month follow-up. RESULTS: Compared with pretreatment, E/Ea (Doppler-derived index of filling pressure and worsening LVDD) significantly decreased significantly after 8 weeks of treatment in the BSJYO granule plus basal WM group (10.52 ± 1.87 vs. 9.49 ± 1.49, P < 0.01), alongside reductions in significantly effective response (SER), effective response (ER), and total effective response (TER = SER + ER) in TCM symptom scores (21.59% vs. 71.70%, P < 0.01). There were no differences between treatment groups in kidney and liver function, early adverse events, or MACE. CONCLUSION: BSJYO granule plus basal WM is an effective and safe therapy for HTN patients with LVDD.

Non-point source (NPS) pollution simulation in control units can identify critical pollution source areas and make Best Management Practices (BMPs) more effective for the responsible parties. In this study, the control unit division method is introduced, and the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of NPS pollution in the Guishui River Basin of Northern China are analyzed using the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. In addition, five BMP scenarios were designed for environmental and cost-benefit analyses. The results show that the loss of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) is concentrated in the rainy season, and the loss of TN and TP is mainly distributed in the middle and lower reaches of the main stream of the Guishui River. This area accounts for 22.34% of the basin area. The vegetated filter strips (VFS) scenario had the best environmental benefits with average TN and TP reduction efficiencies of 63.4% and 62.6%, respectively. The Grassed Waterway was the most cost-effective scenario measure, cost-benefit (CE) values of TN and TP were 1798.13 g/€ and 601.56 g/€. Generally, research on NPS pollution using control units can more clearly identify the critical source areas of pollution than other methods, and provides technical support for watershed management decision makers.

Tristetraprolin (TTP) is the most well-known member of RNA-binding zinc-finger protein that play a significant role in accelerating mRNA decay. Increasingly studies have reported that TTP was functioned as a tumor suppressor gene in several types of carcinomas, while its underlying mechanism is not clear yet. In the current study, we found that TTP overexpression decreased cell proliferation and increased cell death in lung adenocarcinoma cells, with the cell cycle arrest at the S phase. Remarkably, instead of inducing cell apoptosis directly, TTP overexpression alters cell autophagy. Our studies demonstrate that TTP overexpression has no effect on apoptosis related genes, but decreases the expression of autophagy-related genes, including Beclin 1 and LC3II. The level of autophagy flux assessed by infection with the mGFP-RFP-LC3 adenovirus construction has been blocked by TTP overexpression. Moreover, the autophagic vacuoles number detected by transmission electron microscopy decreased with TTP expression up-regulation. Our results indicate, for the first time, that TTP suppresses cell proliferation and increases cell death through cell autophagy pathway in lung cancer cells. Our study provides a new angle of view for TTP function as a tumor suppressor which could be targeted in tumor treatment.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent respiratory tract infections (RRTIs) have a negative impact on both children's health and family wellbeing. Deficiency of ZhengQi used to be an instinct factor driving RRTI in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Our clinical observations suggest that children with gastrointestinal heat retention syndrome (GHRS) may have a greater risk of catching respiratory tract infections (RTIs). GHRS is a new predisposing factor for RRTI and it is dietary related. This study is aimed to explore association between GHRS and RRTI. METHODS: A prospective cohort study has been conducted in Beijing, China; children aged 1-18 were enrolled. TCM symptoms, demographic and physiological characteristics were recorded by using semi-structured questionnaire. GHRS was considered as a predisposing factor. Children were followed up for next 12 months. We contacted with their parents using a face-to-face questionnaire survey, via email or phone every 3 months. Episodes of RTIs were recorded in detail. RESULTS: Three hundred thirty four children were enrolled and 307 (91.92%) followed up for 12 months. The incidence of RTI was 4.32 episodes per child-year (95 % CI 4.03-4.61). 69 (43.13%) children in the group with GHRS suffered from RRTI; there were 48 (32.65%) children in group without GHRS. The risk ratio (RR) value of RRTI occurrence was 1.32 (95 % CI 0.91-1.91, P = 0.139), and the attributable risk percent (AR%) was 24.28%. Dry stool and irritability were positively correlated with RTI episodes, age and BMI were negatively correlated with RTI episodes in a linear regression model. Dry stool (OR = 1.510) was positively correlated with RRTI occurrence, age (OR = 0.889) and BMI (OR = 0.858) were negatively correlated with RRTI occurrence in our logistic regression model. CONCLUSIONS: GHRS is associated with RRTI in this cohort. Dry stool was positively associated with RRTI, and BMI was negatively associated with RRTI. Studies with larger sample size and longer follow up are needed to further evaluate this association. Relieving GHRS should be considered when TCM practitioners treat RRTI children, and this may protect children from suffering RTIs. OBJECTIVE: To observe the antagonist effect of Curcuma Aromatica (CA) on renal tubular epithelial-myofibroblast transdifferentiation (EMT) induced by transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1). METHODS: Normal renal tubular epithelial NRK-52E cells in vitro cultured were randomly divided into 6 groups, i.e., the normal control group (Group C), the TGF-beta1 induced model group (Group T), the low dose CA treated group (Group E1), the moderate dose CA treated group (Group E2), the high dose CA group (Group E3), and the Benazepril Hydrochloride Tablet treated group (Group Y). Except Group C, corresponding medication (with an action of 48 h) was administered to cells in the rest groups after they were induced by TGF-beta1 for 24 h. The morphological changes were observed by inverted phase contrast microscope. The distribution of beta-actin protein was detected by immunohistochemical assay. The mRNA expressions of alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA) and E-cadherin (E-cad) were detected by real-time PCR. The concentration of fibronectin (FN) was detected by ELISA. RESULTS: After induced by TGF-beta1 for three days, hypertrophy and elongated cells in fusiform-shape occurred,with increased expressions of beta-actin protein in the cytoskeletal structure (P < 0.05), bundle fibrous structure occurred inside cytoplasm with significantly up-regulated intracellular alpha-SMA mRNA expressions (P < 0.05), E-cad mRNA expression decreased (P < 0.05), the FN content in the supernate increased (P < 0.05) in Group T. Compared with Group T, partial cells in Group E1, E2, and E3 showed fibrous changes, accompanied with decreased expression of beta-actin protein and FN concentration (P < 0.05). The expression of alpha-SMA mRNA increased and the expression E-cad mRNA decreased in Group E2 and E3 (both P < 0.05). But there was no statistical difference in the expression levels of E-cad and alpha-SMA mRNA (P > 0.05). Compared with Group E1, the expression of beta-actin protein and FN concentration decreased in Group E2 and E3 (P < 0.05). The expressions of alpha-SMA mRNA decreased and E-cad mRNA increased in Group E3 (P < 0.05). Compared with Group Y, the expression of beta-actin mRNA and FN concentration increased in Group E1 (P < 0.05); the expression of beta-actin mRNA increased in Group E3 (P < 0.05); the expression of E-cad mRNA decreased in Group E3 (P < 0.05). There was no statistical difference in the expression of alpha-SMA mRNA among Group E1, E2, and E3 (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: CA could inhibit the occurrence of TGF-beta1 induced EMT, which could be used as an effective drug for treating chronic renal insufficiency.

Lingguizhugan decoction (LGZG), a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula, has been used to treat obesity and hyperlipidemia in recent years, but the related mechanisms underlying the regulation of lipid metabolism by LGZG are not clear yet. Here, we reported the effectiveness and possible mechanisms of LGZG on rats with fatty liver disease induced by high-fat diet (HFD). Our results demonstrated that LGZG significantly attenuated HFD-induced fatty liver disease, as measured by body weight, liver index, epididymal fat pad-body weight ratio (EFP/BW), liver injury, and hepatic triglycerides (TG) probably through increasing serum thyroid hormone levels, improving beta-oxidation (via modulation of TR ß 1 and CPT1A expression), metabolism and transport (through modulation of SREBP-1c, ACSL and ApoB100 expression) of fatty acid. In addition, we discovered the herbal combination with the properties of warming yang to relieve water retention in the formula and proposed the biological basis of LGZG conventional effect via further study on disassembled formula. This study, for the first time, revealed the mechanisms through which LGZG regulates lipid metabolism. Furthermore, our study suggested that it might be feasible to understand the scientific implications of TCM from the perspective of classic formulas' conventional efficacy.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) by comparing the therapeutic efficacy of methods for fortifying the spleen and replenishing qi, warming yang and fortifying the spleen and warming yang to move water. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into normal, model, Sijunzi Tang (SJZ), Lizhong Tang (LZ), Linggui Zhugan Tang (LGZG) and Shenzhuo Tang (SZ) groups. Rats in the normal group were fed with ordinary diet, while the rats in the other groups were fed with high fat diet including 88% ordinary food, 10% lard oil and 2% cholesterol. After four weeks of treatment, the weight of liver and epididymal fat was recorded respectively for calculating the indexes of liver (liver weight/body weight) and epididymal fat (weight of epididymal fat pads/body weight); the pathological changes in liver tissues were observed by hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining; the levels of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), triacylglycerol (TAG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) and liver TAG concentration were analyzed by biochemical test. RESULTS: Body weight, liver and epididymal fat indexes and liver TAG level of rats all significantly increased in the model group as compared with the normal group (P<0.05). Hepatic fatty infiltration, TAG concentration and the levels of serum TAG and ALT were significantly decreased in the LGZG and SZ groups when compared to those in the model group (P<0.05). In addition, epididymal fat index and serum TC level also significantly decreased in the LGZG group as compared with the model group (P<0.05). However, there was no significant change in liver TAG concentration in LZ and model groups. CONCLUSION: Method of warming yang or moving water can promote the lipid metabolism. It may be an effective strategy in preventing and treating NAFL by treating with warming yang and moving water together.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the mechanisms by which kangxianling (KXL) treats renal interstitial fibrosis using a customized gene chip. METHODS: Twelve out of 18 specific pathogen-free sprague dawley (SPF SD) rats underwent a unilateral ureteral occlusion. These rats were then randomly assigned into either the model unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) or kangxianling (KXL) group. The other six rats were assigned to the sham-operated group. The UUO and sham-operated groups were given normal saline via intragastric administration, whereas the KXL group was given KXL via intragastric administration. All rats were sacrificed for renal tissue collection (i.e., left nephridial tissue), and the detection of genetic changes with the customized chip. RESULTS: Compared to the sham-operated group, transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), Smad2, and Smad3 genes were significantly up-regulated in the UUO group, with >1.5-fold rise (P < 0.01). The Smad7 gene was significantly reduced in the UUO versus sham-operated group, with a down-regulation of >1.5-fold (P < 0.01). In the KXL group, TGF-beta1, Smad2, and Smad3 genes were significantly reduced compared to the UUO group, with a down-regulation of >1.5-fold (P < 0.01), whereas the Smad7 gene was significantly increased compared to the UUO group, with an up-regulation of > 1.5-fold (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: It was found that KXL can significantly reduce the gene levels of TGF-beta1, Smad2, and Smad3. Immunohistochemistry findings also revealed significantly lower TGF-beta1/Smads-mediated gene transcription activity. These findings suggest that KXL may negatively regulate the TGF-beta1/Smads signal pathway to inhibit the occurrence of renal fibrosis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the mechanism of liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) in rats with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and the therapeutic effects of the extract mixture of Dangyao (Swertia pseudochinensis Hara) and Shuifeiji (Silybum marianum Gaertn) on NAFLD rats with liver injury. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were randomized into normal control group, CCl(4) group, high-fat diet group, high-fat diet plus CCl(4) injection group (model group), diammonium glycyrrhizinate group and extract mixture group. Except the normal control and CCl(4) groups, rats were fed with high-fat diet (88% normal chow, 10% lard and 2% cholesterol) to induce NAFLD. Diammonium glycyrrhizinate and extracts were given by gavage. After eight weeks, a nonlethal dose of CCl(4) was injected intraperitoneally to all rats except the normal and high-fat diet groups. And 48 h later, all rats were sacrificed, and serum and liver tissues were collected for further study. Paraffin-processed liver tissue was stained with hematoxylin-eosin (HE) to observe the pathological changes. Serum alamine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were measured. The levels of triacylglycerol (TAG), malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) in liver tissues were also examined. Expression of uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) was determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting. RESULTS: Liver sections stained with HE showed that the histopathological changes in the normal control group and the CCl(4) group were mild; massive hepatosteatosis diffusing in lobules was shown in the high-fat diet groups; steatosis, hepatocellular ballooning degeneration and inflammatory infiltration were severe around the central vein in sections of the model group. Compared with the model group, hepatosteatosis and ballooning were significantly attenuated in the treatment groups. Levels of serum ALT and AST, contents of TAG and MDA and the UCP2 expression in liver tissues of the model group increased obviously, while the level of liver GSH decreased. Compared with rats in the model group, the above biomarkers in the treatment groups were improved significantly. CONCLUSION: The mixture of Dangyao and Shuifeiji extracts can decrease the susceptibility and degree of liver injury induced by hepatotoxin in rats with NAFLD. Regulation of the balance of pro- and anti-oxidative stress factors is involved in the mechanism.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of Jiangzhi Granule (JZG), a compound traditional Chinese herbal medicine, in regulating liver X receptor α (LXRα) and sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c) expressions in a rat model of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS: Forty specific pathogen-free Wistar male rats were randomly divided into normal group, untreated group, pioglitazone (PIO) group and JZG group. All rats were fed with high-fat diet (88% normal chow plus 10% lard plus 2% cholesterol) for 4 weeks except for the normal group. After the NAFLD model was established, PIO and JZG were fed to rats in the corresponding groups respectively for another 4 weeks. At the end of the 8th week, liver steatosis level was observed under a light microscope with hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining; serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities and triacylglycerol (TAG) and free fatty acid (FFA) contents in liver tissues were measured. LXRα and SREBP-1c expressions in liver tissues were determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot methods. RESULTS: Compared with the normal group, there were physiological changes for hepatic steatosis in liver tissues in the untreated group as observed by HE staining. JZG improved serum ALT and AST levels which were significantly increased in the untreated group. Both JZG and PIO improved FFA and TAG levels in liver tissues which were significantly increased in the untreated group. mRNA and protein levels of LXRα and SREBP-1c in the untreated group were higher than those in the normal group, while the treatment of JZG and PIO lowered their expressions. CONCLUSION: JZG may regulate fatty acid metabolic disorder by decreasing the levels of LXRα and SREBP-1c.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether nonalcoholic hepatic steatosis sensitizes carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver injury, and to assess the therapeutic effect of Chinese medicine extracts of Dangfei Liganning capsules and their potential underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were fed a high-fat diet to induce nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or a normal diet (N). Eight weeks later, a nonlethal dose of CCl4 was applied intraperitoneally. From the start, HF-CCl4 rats were administered daily Dangyao extracts (D), Dangfei Liganning capsules (DF), or Diammonium Glycyrrhizinate (G) intragastrically. Rats were sacrificed 48 h after CCl4 administration. In addition to serum biochemistry, liver histopathology was observed using hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and oil red O staining, and hepatic levels of triglyceride (TG), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), caspase-3 activation and cytochrome P450 (CYP2E1) expression were assessed. RESULTS: There was almost no response to the nonlethal dose of CCl4 in the N control group. However, the HF group demonstrated massive steatosis, and elevated levels of serum ALT and AST, liver MDA, CYP2E1, and caspase-3 activation, whereas the levels of GSH and SOD were significantly decreased. All indexes assessed were dramatically worse in the HF-CCl4 group compared to the HF group, in addition to the more severe steatosis, hepatocyte ballooning, and inflammatory infiltration apparent in the centrilobular area. The medicines we tested affected the pathological changes in HF-CCl4 rats to differing degrees: DF and G led to improvements in all of the above examined indexes, including an obvious improvement in histopathology, and DF improved serum ALT and MDA levels more markedly than G, whereas D extracts produced only mild liver injury attenuation. CONCLUSION: Liver with NAFLD is more sensitive to hepatotoxicity; furthermore, the disrupted balance of oxidative stress and anti-oxidant defense contributes to the underlying mechanisms. Dangfei Liganning capsules potentially decrease this toxic susceptibility and alleviate liver injury in non-alcoholic fatty liver.

The consumption of paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a major inorganic arsenic exposure pathway in S.E. Asia. A multi-location survey was undertaken in Guangdong Province, South China to assess arsenic accumulation and speciation in 2 rice cultivars, one an Indica and the other a hybrid Indica. The results showed that arsenic concentrations in rice tissue increased in the order grain < husk < straw < root. Rice grain arsenic content of 2 rice cultivars was significant different and correlated with phosphorus concentration and molar ratio of P/As in shoot, being higher for the Indica cultivar than for the hybrid Indica, which suggests altering shoot phosphorus status as a promising route for breeding rice cultivars with reduced grain arsenic. Speciation of grain arsenic, performed using HPLC-ICP-MS, identified inorganic arsenic as the dominant arsenic species present in the rice grain.

The present paper studies gene regulation in kidney deficiency syndromes from the simple Nephrotic Syndrome and with the principle of positive-negative regulation to control the change-over of yin-yang, the modern molecular biological techniques can be used, such as gene chip, representational difference analysis (RDA) and gene sequence analysis, so as to investigate the inner relationship between the genes and kidney deficiency syndromes and prove the effect given by these genes on the pathophysiological status of change-over of yin-yang in kidney deficiency syndromes. This philosophical approach and method can also be adopted for studies of the related genes in other TCM syndromes.

Pulmonary and cerebral lipiodol embolism after transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) of hepatocellular carcinoma is rare. To our knowledge, only 7 cases have been reported in the literature. We present a case of pulmonary and cerebral lipiodol embolism, and analyzed retrospectively the imaging and clinical data of the patient and conclude the most probable mechanism of pulmonary and cerebral lipiodol embolism, which is different from that of the cases reported previously.

OBJECTIVE: To study the regulative action of mica monomer powder preparation on the chief and parietal cells as well as G and D cells in the gastric mucosa of the experimental atrophic gastritis (CAG) rats. METHODS: Intervention therapy was given to the experimental CAG rats at three different doses of mica monomer powder preparation to evaluate the changes of chief and parietal cells as well as G and D cells in the gastric mucosa and the histopathological changes of gastric mucosa. RESULTS: Mica monomer powder preparation at three different doses could increase the amount of chief and parietal cells as well as G and D cells in gastric mucosa of the experimental CAG rats and alleviate and control the inflammation of gastric mucosa and the atrophy of gastric mucosa glands. Especially, better effects were shown in the mid and high dose groups. CONCLUSION: Mica has the pharmacological action of protecting the gastric mucosa, enhancing blood flow of the gastric mucosa, and consequently improving the inflammatory responses of the gastric mucosa. One of the mechanisms is associated with promoting the secretion of gastric acid and gastric pepsin and regulating the neuroendocrine mechanism including gut hormone secretion (gastrin and somatostatin) by increasing the number of chief and parietal cells as well as G and D cells.

OBJECTIVE: To research the regulative effect of mica monomer granule preparation on the expression of gene associated with cancer in gastric mucosa tissue of experimental chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) rats. METHOD: To treat experimental CAG rats using mica monomer granule preparation with three different dosage-high, moderate and low level respectively. To observe the expression changes of mutant antioncogene-p53 gene-protein, oncogene p21, antioncogene p16 and anti-apoptosis gene bcl-2 in gastric mucosa of CAG rats by two-step ways of EnVision system in immunohistochemical method. RESULT: There was the tendency that mica monomer granule preparation with three different dosage could decrease the expression of p53 as well as p21, and mica had the obvious regulative effects on deletion of p16 and high-expression of bcl-2. It could also alleviate the inflammation of gastric mucosa and promote the regeneration of gland. CONCLUSION: The treatment and reversion action of mica on chronic atrophic gastritis is probably related with the regulative effect on the expression of gene associated with cancer.
