BACKGROUND: The current understanding of the magnitude and consequences of multimorbidity in Chinese older adults with coronary heart disease (CHD) is insufficient. We aimed to assess the association and population-attributable fractions (PAFs) between multimorbidity and mortality among hospitalized older patients who were diagnosed with CHD in Shenzhen, China. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of older Chinese patients (aged ≥ 65 years) who were diagnosed with CHD. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the associations between multimorbidity and all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. We also calculated the PAFs. RESULTS: The study comprised 76,455 older hospitalized patients who were diagnosed with CHD between January 1, 2016, and August 31, 2022. Among them, 70,217 (91.9%) had multimorbidity, defined as the presence of at least one of the predefined 14 chronic conditions. Those with cancer, hemorrhagic stroke and chronic liver disease had the worst overall death risk, with adjusted HRs (95% CIs) of 4.05 (3.77, 4.38), 2.22 (1.94, 2.53), and 1.85 (1.63, 2.11), respectively. For CVD mortality, the highest risk was observed for hemorrhagic stroke, ischemic stroke, and chronic kidney disease; the corresponding adjusted HRs (95% CIs) were 3.24 (2.77, 3.79), 1.91 (1.79, 2.04), and 1.81 (1.64, 1.99), respectively. All-cause mortality was mostly attributable to cancer, heart failure and ischemic stroke, with PAFs of 11.8, 10.2, and 9.1, respectively. As for CVD mortality, the leading PAFs were heart failure, ischemic stroke and diabetes; the corresponding PAFs were 18.0, 15.7, and 6.1, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Multimorbidity was common and had a significant impact on mortality among older patients with CHD in Shenzhen, China. Cancer, heart failure, ischemic stroke and diabetes are the primary contributors to PAFs. Therefore, prioritizing improved treatment and management of these comorbidities is essential for the survival prognosis of CHD patients from a holistic public health perspective.

Chinese formulation-based medicinal food has been widely used in clinical trials, but its safety is not well studied. In this research, the edible safety assessment of Balanced Health Care Dan-a formulation containing traditional edible ingredients that were initially formulated to reduce side effects for lung cancer patients-was studied in mice based on biochemical and gut microbial analyses. The experimental mice were subcutaneously loaded with lung tumor A549 cells and then administrated with Balanced Health Care Dan (200 mg/kg or 400 mg/kg b.w. in gavage feeding) for 4 weeks. The body weight, blood parameters, and pathogenic phenotype in tissues were examined. No toxicological symptom was found in experimental mice compared with the normal control. Comprehensive analyses were also conducted to evaluate intestinal microbiota that are associated with many diseases. Balanced Health Care Dan modified the gut microbiota structure in a positive way. In conclusion, the Chinese formulation-based medicinal food has shown no toxicological effect in mice within 4 weeks of feeding experiment and has the potential to be used in clinical trials.

Considering the impact of oxidative stress on the development of many diseases, together with the role of natural antioxidants in maintaining physiological balance in humans, medicinal mushrooms are potential sources of bioactive compounds against many diseases. In the present work, in vitro evaluation of the biological activities of the alcoholic extracts of two wild tree mushrooms, namely, Ganoderma applanatum and Fomitopsis pinicola, has been performed. Extraction of G. applanatum (GAE) and F. pinicola (FPE) was conducted with 60% ethanol and 100% ethanol sequentially. UPLC-MS/MS identification was conducted on the two mushrooms extracts. A total of 15 substances were identified in GAE, including 3 spiro meroterpenoids and 12 triterpenoids; a total of 14 chemical constituents were iden¬tified in FPE, including 8 triterpenoids, 4 triterpene glycosides, 1 lanosterol, and 1 lanostanoid. The resulting extracts were examined for their in vitro antioxidative and cytoprotective effects against AAPH-induced oxidative damage. Our results demonstrated that both extracts have potent antioxidative activities, when GAE was 0.2 mg/mL, the clearance rates of DPPH and ABTS have reached 93.34% and 99.93%, respectively. When FPE was 1.4 mg/mL and 0.6 mg/mL, the scavenging rates of DPPH and ABTS have reached 91.76% and 100%, respectively. Both the alcoholic extracts of G. applanatum and F. pinicola were able to protect the AAPH-induced damage and could effectively inhibit cell aging via ß-galactosidase (SA ß-gal) staining activity test and scanning electron microscopy analysis.

To reveal the law of the proportion consistency of the active components in Chinese medicine and explore a new way to evaluate the quality of Chinese medicine, the present study investigated the content of tanshinone Ⅱ_A, cryptotanshinone, tanshinone Ⅰ, salvianolic acid B, rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid, and lithospermic acid in 895 samples of Salvia miltiorrhiza from 87 literature articles. The samples with salvianolic acid B and tanshinones(total content of tanshinone Ⅱ_A, tanshinone Ⅰ, and cryptotanshinone) meeting the requirements of Chinese Pharmacopoeia were analyzed for proportion consistency of components, and the proportion distribution of components was compared. The results showed that the proportions in and between tanshinones and salvianolic acids were stable. The content ratios of cryptotanshinone to tanshinone Ⅱ_A, rosmarinic acid to salvianolic acid B, and salvianolic acid B to tanshinone Ⅱ_A fluctuated from 0.1 to 1.7, from 0.02 to 0.14, and from 10 to 60, respectively. It indicated that the content proportions of different components were not fixed, but fluctuated in a certain range. The fluctuation range of components in the same group was small, but that in different groups was large. The content proportions of active components were stable for Chinese medicinal materials with fixed varieties or origins. The samples whose content proportions were out of the fluctuation ranges were generally unqualified medicinal materials. We proposed a "three-dimensional multi-component" quality evaluation model of Chinese medicine based on the above findings. Specifically, "three-dimensional" means to accurately evaluate the quality of Chinese medicine from varieties, proportions, and content of active components, and "multi-component" means to highlight the information of multiple components in Chinese medicine, especially the quality markers and equivalent component groups. The proportion of components in Chinese medicine can be used as an important index for the quality evaluation of Chinese medicine. The proportions of active components are stable in Chinese medicinal materials with fixed varieties or places of origin.

In order to optimize water and fertilizer use in the double-cropping rice in eastern Fujian Province, a field runoff plot experiment was conducted to investigate rice yield, nutrient uptake, and runoff losses of N (nitrogen) and P (phosphorus) in the T0(no chemical fertilization with traditional flooding irrigation), T1(common chemical fertilizer of 273 kg N·hm-2, 59 kg P·hm-2, and 112 kg K·hm-2 combined with traditional flooding irrigation), T2(chemical fertilizer of 240 kg N·hm-2, 52 kg P·hm-2, and 198 kg K·hm-2 combined with traditional flooding irrigation) and T3(chemical fertilizer combined with shallow intermittent irrigation) treatments. Results showed that early rice grain yield in the T1, T2 and T3 treatments significantly increased by 0.7, 1.0, 1.1 times, late rice grain yield significantly increased by 0.9, 1.1, 1.0 times compared to that in the T0 treatment, respectively. The T1, T2 and T3 treatments significantly increased the uptake of N and P in aboveground parts of the plants, especially in grains. The T1, T2 and T3 treatments significantly increased N uptake by 1.1, 1.2, 1.2 times, increased P uptake by 0.9, 1.4, 1.6 times in early-season grains, and significantly increased N uptake by 0.8, 1.0, 1.0 times, increased P uptake by 0.7, 0.9, 0.9 times in late-season grains, compared to T0, respectively. Furthermore, T3 increased agronomic N use efficiency (AEN) and agronomic P use efficiency (AEP) by 71.1% and 69.2% in early rice plants, increased AEN and AEP by 26.4% and 25.0% in late rice plants, whereas T3 decreased total dissolved N (DN) by 16.0% in comparison with T1. Dissolved inorganic N loss in surface runoff occurred mainly in the form of NO3--N (nitrate N) under different water and fertilizer regimes. However, there were no significant differences in AEN and AEP between T2 and T3 treatments. These findings suggested that optimal applications of water and fertilizers (T3) might increase N and P uptake in rice plants, maintain yield, and reduce N loss, especially in the form of NO3--N in surface water from early rice field. In general, this study could provide theoretical support for the optimization of irrigation and fertilization and for the control of N and P non-point source pollution from the double cropping rice paddy fields in eastern Fujian Province.

OBJECTIVE@#To analyze the acupoint selection rules of post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) treated with acupuncture by ancient and modern medical record cloud platform (V1.5).@*METHODS@#The published randomized controlled trial (RCT) literature of PSCI treated with acupuncture was retrieved from CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, SinoMed, PubMed, EMbase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science, and the data was extracted to establish prescription database. The ancient and modern medical record cloud platform (V1.5) was used to analyze the data.@*RESULTS@#A total of 185 articles was included, involving 91 acupoints, the total using frequency was 1174 times. The top 5 acupoints in frequency of PSCI treated with acupuncture were Baihui (GV 20, 151 times), Shenting (GV 24, 97 times), Sishencong (EX-HN 1, 83 times), Neiguan (PC 6, 69 times) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6, 64 times); the most involved meridian was the governor vessel, and the generally used acupoints were mainly distributed in the head, face and neck. The top 5 acupoint combinations in frequency were Baihui (GV 20)-Shenting (GV 24, 89 times), Baihui (GV 20)-Sishencong (EX-HN 1, 79 times), Baihui (GV 20)-Neiguan (PC 6, 59 times), Baihui (GV 20)-Sanyinjiao (SP 6, 56 times) and Baihui (GV 20)-Zusanli (ST 36, 51 times). The acupoint combination with the strongest association was Shenting (GV 24)→Baihui (GV 20). There were 6 acupoint cluster groups according to the cluster analysis, and the main core prescription was Baihui (GV 20), Shenting (GV 24), Sishencong (EX-HN 1), Zusanli (ST 36), Neiguan (PC 6) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6).@*CONCLUSION@#Acupoints on the governor vessel, and distributed in head, face and neck are the main acupoints for PSCI treated with acupuncture, Baihui (GV 20), Shenting (GV 24), Sishencong (EX-HN 1), Zusanli (ST 36), Neiguan (PC 6) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6) can be used as the main acupoints, but it is still necessary to combine with syndrome differentiation.

OBJECTIVE@#To observe the effect of moxibustion at "Guanyuan" (CV 4) and "Shenque" (CV 8) on acetylcholine (Ach), adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and muscarinic-type choline receptor (M2) and purine receptor P2X3 in bladder tissue in the rats with neurogenic bladder (NB) of detrusor areflexia after lumbar-sacral spinal cord injury and explore the underlying mechanism of moxibustion for promoting detrusor contraction.@*METHODS@#Sixty SD rats were randomly divided into a model preparation group (n=45) and a sham-operation group (n=15). In the model preparation group, the modified Hassan Shaker spinal cord transection method was used to prepare the model of NB. In the sham-operation group, the spinal cord transection was not exerted except laminectomy and spinal cord exposure. Among the rats with successfully modeled, 30 rats were selected and divided randomly into a model group and a moxibustion group, with 15 rats in each one. On the 15th day after the operation, moxibustion was applied at "Guanyuan" (CV 4) and "Shenque" (CV 8) in the moxibustion group, 10 min at each acupoint, once a day. The consecutive 7-day treatment was as one course and the intervention for 2 courses was required. Urodynamic test was adopted to evaluate bladder function in rats. Using HE staining, the morphological changes in bladder tissue were observed. The content of Ach and ATP in bladder tissue was measured with biochemical method, and the protein and mRNA expression levels of M2 and P2X3 receptors in bladder tissue were detected with Western blot and real-time fluorescence quantification PCR method.@*RESULTS@#Compared with the sham-operation group, the maximum bladder capacity, leakage point pressure and bladder compliance were increased in the rats of the model group (P<0.05). Compared with the model group, the maximum bladder capacity, the leakage point pressure and bladder compliance were decreased in the rats of the moxibustion group (P<0.05). In the model group, the detrusor fibres were arranged irregularly, bladder epithelial tissues were not tightly connected and cell arrangement was disordered, combined with a large number of vacuolar cells. In the moxibustion group, compared with the model group, the detrusor fibres were arranged regularly, bladder epithelial cells were well distributed and vacuolar cells were reduced. Compared with the sham-operation group, the content of Ach and ATP in bladder tissue was decreased (P<0.05), the protein and mRNA expression levels of M2 and P2X3 receptors were reduced (P<0.05) in the model group. In the moxibustion group, the content of Ach and ATP in bladder tissue was increased (P<0.05) and the protein and mRNA expression levels of M2 and P2X3 receptors were increased (P<0.05) as compared with the model group.@*CONCLUSION@#Moxibustion at "Guanyuan" (CV 4) and "Shenque" (CV 8) may effectively improve bladder function in the rats with NB of detrusor areflexia after lumbar-sacral spinal cord injury and its underlying mechanism is related to promoting the release of Ach and up-regulating the expression of M2 receptor, thereby enhancing the release of ATP and increasing the expression of P2X3 receptor. Eventually, detrusor contraction is improved.

BACKGROUND: At present, colorectal cancer is routinely treated with adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy postoperatively. The adverse effects (AEs) of chemotherapy usually interrupt the treatment of chemotherapy. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has demonstrated great potential in improving patients' clinical symptoms, regulating the immune function, improving the life quality, and reducing the AEs of chemotherapy. AIM: To observe the clinical efficacy of Yiqi Jianpi anti-cancer prescription combined with chemotherapy in patients with colorectal cancer after operation. METHODS: Data from patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer between January 2019 and February 2021 were collected from Liaoning Cancer Hospital and Institute and the Second Affiliated Hospital of Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Patients receiving the chemotherapy regimen of capecitabine plus oxaliplatin (CAPOX) after radical resection of colorectal cancer were prospectively collected and randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was given Yiqi Jianpi anti-cancer prescription combined with the CAPOX regimen, while the control group was given the CAPOX regimen alone. After six cycles of chemotherapy, the scores of TCM symptoms, Karnofsky performance scale (KPS) score, levels of T-cell subsets, and AEs after chemotherapy of the two groups were compared. RESULTS: A total of 70 patients were randomly divided into either an experimental group (n = 35, no dropout) or a control group (n = 33, with 2 dropouts). Compared with the control group, the experimental group improved significantly (P < 0.05) in scores of TCM symptoms, KPS score, levels of T-cell subsets, and AEs of chemotherapy. CONCLUSION: Yiqi Jianpi anti-cancer prescription can effectively improve spleen deficiency, regulate the immune function, and alleviate the AEs of chemotherapy, so as to improve the life quality of patients with good therapeutic effects and application prospect in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of bloodletting therapy for herpes zoster. METHODS: The following electronic databases will be searched from PubMed (1966 to March 2020), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (update to March 2020), EMBASE (1980 to March 2020), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (1979 to March 2020), Wan Fang Data (1980 to March 2020), Chinese Scientific Journal Database (1989 to March 2020), Chinese Biomedical Database (1978 to March 2020) and traditional Chinese medicine Literature Analysis and Retrieval Database (1949 to March 2020). All randomized controlled trials without any limitation of blinding or publication language about this topic will be included, exclude cohort studies and case reports. Two independent researchers will operate article retrieval, duplication removing, screening, quality evaluation, and data analyses by Review Manager (V.5.3.5). Meta-analyses, subgroup analysis, and/or descriptive analysis will be performed based on the included data conditions. RESULTS: High-quality synthesis and/or descriptive analysis of current evidence will be provided from cure rate, converting to clinical diagnosis rate, and side effects of bloodletting. CONCLUSION: This study will provide the evidence of whether bloodletting is an effective and safe intervention for herpes zoster. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: CRD42020171976.

BACKGROUND: Zinc deficiency is a worldwide public health problem. Currently, there are no established biomarkers available for the accurate diagnosis of zinc-deficiency in individuals. Additionally, a comprehensive view of the adverse effects of zinc deficiency is lacking. Our aim was to identify superior biomarkers of zinc deficiency and uncover the adverse effects of zinc deficiency. METHODS: We performed multi-omics analysis using serum proteomics-metabolomics and liver proteomics on zinc-deficient rats to identify candidate biomarkers and reveal the associated adverse effects of zinc deficiency. Secondly, the candidate biomarkers were validated in two zinc-deficient populations and an RCT zinc supplementation trial on a zinc-deficient population. RESULTS: Our integrated multi-omics approach revealed numerous biomarkers (>2000) and glutathione metabolism as the most important changed pathway in zinc deficiency. Three candidate biomarkers from glutathione metabolism were validated in repeated zinc-deficient rats by quantitative analysis. Only glutathione sulfotransferase omega-1 (GSTO1) (among 3 candidate biomarkers) was validated in the two zinc-deficient populations and zinc-supplemented population. Compared with serum zinc, serum GSTO1 yielded a better response to zinc supplementation and a higher correlation coefficient with zinc intake and the AUC value and has the potential for diagnosing zinc deficiency. By integrated multi-omics, we identified both established and novel adverse effects of zinc deficiency. CONCLUSIONS: Our integrated multi-omics analysis revealed more complete information about zinc deficiency; GSTO1 was found to be a reliable potential biomarker for diagnosis of zinc deficiency. Fried foods have potential adverse effects on health. However, the compounds produced during the process of frying in different vegetable oils are unknown. In this work, ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC), quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (Q-TOF MSMS) and chemical pattern recognition analysis was first conducted to analyze the changes in compounds in 8 different vegetable oils before and after thin-layer heating (without food) and to reveal the potential markers of oil used for deep-frying food. Then, these markers were validated in used frying oil. Our results of principal component analysis (PCA), partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) indicated that both thin-layer heating and deep-frying significantly change the compounds of vegetable oils. Thirty-six of the markers associated with thin-layer heating from the 8 different oils were identified in used frying oils and can be used as common markers of oil used for deep-frying. Additionally, 22 markers detected in individual vegetable oils provided unique markers of used frying oils. These markers can be used to distinguish used frying oil and have the potential to reveal the associated physiological harm.

Glycyrrhizic acid, the main active ingredient of licorice, has good antibacterial, anti-tumor, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and immunostimulatory activities. However, the content of glycyrrhizic acid fluctuates greatly in different licorice cultivars, and production depends on plant sources, which greatly limits its development and applications. Therefore, increasing glycyrrhizic acid content has become a research priority. In recent years, regulation of the glycyrrhizic acid biosynthesis pathway has been analyzed, the downstream synthesis pathway in licorice has been fully investigated, some key genes have been cloned, polymorphisms have been studied, and the content of glycyrrhizic acid was shown to be regulated by environmental stimuli. This work has provided a basis for studying the regulation mechanism of the glycyrrhizic acid synthesis pathway. This review summarizes and discusses relevant research to provide a current understanding of the glycyrrhizic acid synthesis pathway and its regulation in licorice.

Objective:To evaluate the 3-year survival outcomes of postoperative patients after high exposure to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). Method:The complete 3-year follow-up data of 150 postoperative patients with stage I–III TNBC were retrospectively analyzed. All the patients received routine western medical treatments (surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiotherapy) according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) clinical practice guidelines in oncology as well as TCM. According to the degree of exposure to TCM, they were divided into the high- and low-exposure cohorts, with the oral administration of Chaihu Longmu Decoction with or without anti-cancer Chinese patent medicine for at least six months annually, or 18 months or more in the three years as the inclusion criterion for the former cohort. The metastatic sites of recurrent TNBC and the recurrent metastasis/death time were observed in both cohorts to compare the disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). The influences of onset age, pathological type, histopathological grade, vascular invasion, clinical stage, and exposure to TCM on survival were subjected to statistical analysis, followed by the observation of adverse effects. Result:There was no significant difference in the metastatic sites between the two cohorts (<italic>P</italic>>0.05). The high-exposure cohort had a longer 3-year DFS than the low-exposure cohort, and the 3-year DFS rate in the high-exposure cohort was increased by 16.9% (χ<sup>2</sup>=6.995, <italic>P</italic>=0.008) as compared with that in the low-exposure cohort, exhibiting a significant difference (<italic>P</italic><0.05). As revealed by the Cox proportional-hazards model, patients in the low-exposure cohort had a 3.724-fold as high risk of recurrent metastasis as that in the high-exposure cohort (95%CI 1.399~9.915). There was no significant difference in the 3-year OS between the two cohorts (<italic>P</italic>>0.05). The overall incidence of adverse effects in both groups was 7.3%, mainly manifested as gastrointestinal discomfort. Conclusion:High exposure to TCM contributes to reducing postoperative recurrence and metastasis and prolonging DFS.

italic>Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo is a rare Chinese herbal medicine, while Dendrobium crepidatum Lindl is a local medicine in Yunnan, both of which have the function of nourishing yin and stomach. To reveal the differences in chemical composition between the two species, ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS) was used to analyze the chemical composition of stems and leaves of D. officinale and D. crepidatum. Principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) were used to determine the differences in metabolites between species and parts of Dendrobium. Fifty-eight chemical compounds were identified in the two species. Analysis indicated that the side ring of alkaloids connected with nitrogen was readily cleaved during analysis. The results of PCA analysis showed that the stems and leaves of D. officinale and D. crepidatum could be easily differentiated, and the chemical constituents of D. officinale and D. crepidatum were significantly different. OPLS-DA analysis showed that there were 16 metabolite differences between the stems and 22 differences in metabolites between the leaves of D. officinale and D. crepidatum. The main metabolite differences in components between the two Dendrobium species were dendrocrepidine B, dendrocrepidine C and dendrocrepine. There were 14 differences in metabolites between the stems and leaves of D. crepidatum. In conclusion, the chemical compositions of D. officinale and D. crepidatum are quite different; the small molecular compounds of D. officinale are mainly terpenoids and flavonoids, and the content of alkaloids is low. There is no significant difference between stem and leaf. In contrast, D. crepidatum is mainly composed of alkaloids and terpenoids, with crepidamine and dendrocrepine as its unique components, and there are great differences in the components between stems and leaves. This study provides a theoretical basis for the development and utilization of Dendrobium resources.

This retrospective study assessed the feasible effect of Yiqihuoxue Formula (YQHXF) for the treatment of patients with ischemic stroke (IS).A total of 66 patients with IS were included in this retrospective study. All patients received routine treatment, and were divided into two groups: a treatment group (n = 33) and a control group (n = 33). In addition to the routine treatment, all patients in the treatment group also underwent YQHXF treatment. All patients in both groups were treated for a total of 8 weeks. The outcomes were assessed by National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), modified Rankin scale (mRS), Barthel index scale (BIS), stroke-specific quality of life (SS-QOL) scale, and adverse events. All outcomes were measured before and after the treatment.After treatment, patients in the treatment group showed better improvements in NIHSS scale (P = .01), mRS (P < .01), BIS (P = .04), and SS-QOL scale (P = .04), than patients in the control group. No treatment-associated adverse events were recorded in this study.The results of this study indicated that YQHXF may benefit for patients with IS.

Acupoint selection rules of neurogenic dysphagia treated with acupuncture and moxibustion from pre-Qin to late Qing Dynasty in Chinese Medical Classics were analyzed based on data mining. The literature regarding acupuncture and moxibustion for neurogenic dysphagia was searched and screened according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria in Chinese Medical Classics (5th Edition), the prescriptions were extracted according to the principle of acupoint extraction.The SPSS 21.0 and Clementine 12.0 were used to perform the cluster analysis and association rule analysis.A total of 191 acupuncture and moxibustion prescriptions were screened and extracted,including 45 acupoints. The top 5 acupoints of acupuncture and moxibustion for neurogenic dysphagia in frequency were Jiache (ST 6), Dicang (ST 4), Lieque (LU 7), Lianquan (CV 23), Shuigou (GV 26). The most involved meridians were the stomach meridian, the governor vessel and the conception vessel. The main acupoints were distributed in the scalp face neck and upper limbs. The most frequently used specific acupoints was crossing points,next was eight confluence points. There were 11 acupoint combinations with strong association according to the association rule analysis, and the top one acupoint combination was Hegu (LI 4)-Jiache (ST 6). There were 9 acupoint cluster groups according to the cluster analysis. Hegu (LI 4), Jiache (ST 6), Dicang (ST 4), Shuigou (GV 26) and Chengjiang (CV 24) were core acupoints for neurogenic dysphagia treated with acupuncture and moxibustion in ancient times, besides,selecting proximal and distal acupoints and selecting acupoints according to symptoms were emphasized.

OBJECTIVE: To select potential molecules that can target viral spike proteins, which may potentially interrupt the interaction between the human angiotension-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor and viral spike protein by virtual screening. METHODS: The three-dimensional (3D)-coordinate file of the receptor-binding domain (RBD)-ACE2 complex for searching a suitable docking pocket was firstly downloaded and prepared. Secondly, approximately 15,000 molecular candidates were prepared, including US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drugs from DrugBank and natural compounds from Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology (TCMSP), for the docking process. Then, virtual screening was performed and the binding energy in Autodock Vina was calculated. Finally, the top 20 molecules with high binding energy and their Chinese medicine (CM) herb sources were listed in this paper. RESULTS: It was found that digitoxin, a cardiac glycoside in DrugBank and bisindigotin in TCMSP had the highest docking scores. Interestingly, two of the CM herbs containing the natural compounds that had relatively high binding scores, Forsythiae fructus and Isatidis radix, are components of Lianhua Qingwen (), a CM formula reportedly exerting activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-Cov-2. Moreover, raltegravir, an HIV integrase inhibitor, was found to have a relatively high binding score. CONCLUSIONS: A class of compounds, which are from FDA-approved drugs and CM natural compounds, that had high binding energy with RBD of the viral spike protein. Our work provides potential candidates for other researchers to identify inhibitors to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection, and highlights the importance of CM and integrative application of CM and Western medicine on treating COVID-19.

Phosphorus (P) recovery from wastewater can be completed by iron-involved autotrophic denitrification via forming Fe(III)-P precipitates and/or adsorbing P onto Fe(III) oxyhydroxides. However, so far, most studies focused on the final P-containing products, while the P-capturing pathways in such a process remain unclear. In this work, autotrophic iron-dependent denitrification (AIDD) was used as a typical anoxic iron-involved P-capturing biosystem to investigate the main P recovery pathways. The AIDD biosystem showed a relatively stable capability of capturing P coupled with nitrate reduction. Direct formation of amorphous Fe(II)-P precipitates after the phosphate was fed, followed by microbially driven oxidation into Fe(III)-P minerals, was found to be the primary pathway for the P capture. In addition, adsorption of phosphate onto the formed iron oxyhydroxides also contributed to the P recovery. This work provides better understanding about recovering P in AIDD and iron-involved denitrification and highlights the important roles of iron oxidizers in the iron-related biological wastewater treatment processes.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common degenerative joint diseases that affects millions of people worldwide, mainly the aging population. Despite numerous published reports, little is known about the pathology of this disease, and no feasible treatment plan exists to stop OA progression. Recently, extensive basic and clinical studies have shown that adipokines play a key role in OA development. Moreover, some drugs associated with adipokines have shown chondroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects on OA. Visfatin has been shown to play a detrimental role in the progression of OA. It increases the production of matrix metalloproteinases and a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs (ADAMTS), induces the production of interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α, affects the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells to adipocytes, and induces osteophyte formation by inhibiting osteoclastogenesis. Although some side effects of chemical visfatin inhibitors have been reported, they were shown to be successful in the treatment of diabetes, cancer, and other diseases that can utilize Chinese herbs, further suggesting that similar therapeutic strategies could be used in OA prevention and treatment. Here, we describe the pathophysiological mechanism of visfatin in OA and discuss some potential pharmacological interventions using Chinese herbs.
