RESUMEN

Enogen Feed Corn (EFC; Syngenta Seeds, LLC, Downers Grove, IL) hybrids contain a trait for expression of heat-stable α-amylase in the grain. α-Amylase is an enzyme responsible for breakdown of starch in the small intestine; supplementation of exogenous α-amylase to pigs may result in greater starch digestibility and thus improved gain efficiency. A total of 288 pigs (Line 600 × 241, DNA, Columbus, NE; initially 41.6 kg) were utilized in an 82-d trial to determine if replacing conventional yellow dent corn (CONV) with EFC in diets with or without distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) influences growth performance and carcass characteristics. Pens of pigs were randomly assigned to one of four dietary treatments balancing for initial body weight. There were nine pens per treatment with eight pigs per pen (an equal number of barrows and gilts per pen). Treatments were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial with main effects of corn source (CONV or EFC) and DDGS (0% or 25%). Experimental diets were fed in meal form in three phases: days 0 to 29, 29 to 47, and 47 to 82. Pigs were weighed approximately every 2 wk and at the beginning of each phase. On day 82, pigs were transported to a commercial abattoir for processing and carcass data collection. Data were analyzed using PROC GLIMMIX procedure of SAS with pen as the experimental unit. There were no corn source by DDGS interactions (P > 0.05) observed for overall performance or carcass characteristics. Overall, average daily gain (ADG) was marginally greater (P < 0.089) for pigs fed EFC than CONV with no evidence (P > 0.196) for difference in average daily feed intake (ADFI), gain:feed ratio (G:F), hot carcass weight (HCW), or other carcass traits. Addition of DDGS decreased (P < 0.047) overall ADG and G:F. Pigs fed DDGS had marginally lower (P < 0.071) HCW, less (P < 0.050) backfat depth, greater (P < 0.026) loin depth, and greater (P < 0.020) percentage lean and carcass fat iodine value (IV). In summary, addition of 25% DDGS to the diet decreased ADG and increased carcass fat IV. Pigs fed EFC tended to have improved overall ADG; however, G:F and carcass characteristics were not different between corn sources. These results suggest that EFC, although not beneficial, may be used as a substitute for CONV without any deleterious effects on growth performance. Further research should be conducted to understand whether addition of EFC to swine diets could be beneficial in younger pigs exhibiting decreased pancreatic α-amylase secretion following weaning or whether heat treatment of diets, such as pelleting, may influence the response to EFC.

A total of 109 sows (Line 241; DNA, Columbus, NE) were used to evaluate the effect of increasing dietary phytase in lactation diets, already adequate in P, on sow and litter performance. On d 107 of gestation, sows were blocked by body weight and parity and allotted to 1 of 3 dietary treatments of increasing phytase concentration (0, 1,000, or 3,000 FYT/kg; Ronozyme HiPhos GT 2700, DSM Nutritional Products, Inc., Parsippany, NJ). The control diet contained no phytase and was formulated to contain 0.50% standardized total tract digestible phosphorus (STTD P; 0.45% available P) and 0.62% STTD calcium (0.90% total Ca). The phytase diets that contained 1,000 or 3,000 FYT/kg were also formulated to 0.50% STTD P and 0.62% STTD Ca including the release of 0.132% STTD P and 0.096% STTD Ca. Diets were balanced for net energy and fed from d 107 of gestation until weaning (d 18 ± 3). All farrowings were monitored, with farrowing duration starting at the time the first pig was born until the first dispersal of placental tissues with no subsequent pigs born. Litters were cross-fostered within treatment until 48 h postfarrowing to equalize litter size. There were no differences among treatments in sow body weight at d 107 of gestation, 24 h after farrowing, or at weaning. Sow average daily feed intake from farrowing to weaning tended to increase (linear, P = 0.093) as phytase increased. There was no evidence for difference in the number of total born pigs, as well as the percentage of stillborns, mummies, and born alive pigs at the completion of farrowing. Similarly, phytase supplementation did not influence (P > 0.05) wean-to-estrus interval or litter size after cross-fostering among dietary treatments. Although not significant (linear, P = 0.226), farrowing duration decreased as added phytase increased with a decrease of 47 min (12%) for 3,000 FYT compared with the control. There were no differences in pig weight at weaning, but as a result of increased survivability (linear, P = 0.002), litter weaning weight and overall litter weight gain increased (quadratic, P < 0.05) up to 1,000 FYT of added phytase with no further benefit observed in sows fed 3,000 FYT. In conclusion, sow feed intake tended to increase linearly with increasing added phytase. Feeding 1,000 FYT/kg maximized overall litter gain and weaning weight; however, a larger-scale study with more sows is needed to determine the addition of phytase in lactation diets to reduce farrowing duration.

A total of 656 pigs (623 live-born and 33 stillborn) from 43 sows were used to evaluate hematological criteria at birth and their association with piglet survival. At birth of each piglet, birth time and order within the litter, weight, umbilical cord status (intact or ruptured) and whether the pig was live-born or stillborn were recorded. A 200µL sample of blood from the umbilical cord was collected and immediately analyzed for concentrations of glucose, oxygen partial pressure (pO2), carbon dioxide partial pressure (pCO2), pH, base excess (BE), bicarbonate (HCO3), saturated oxygen (sO2), total carbon dioxide (TCO2), sodium, potassium, ionized calcium (iCa), hematocrit (Hct), and hemoglobin (Hb) on a hand held iStat portable clinical analyzer (iStat Alinity, Abbott Point of Care Inc., Princeton, NJ). Piglets were categorized into quartiles based on birth order and cumulative birth interval (CumBI). Live-born pigs had higher (P < 0.01) umbilical cord blood pH, HCO3, BE, sO2, TCO2, and birth weight compared with stillborn pigs, but lower (P < 0.01) pCO2, K, iCa, and glucose compared with stillborn pigs. Pigs with intact umbilical cords at birth were associated with higher (P < 0.01) blood pH, HCO3, BE, and TCO2 compared with piglets born with a ruptured umbilical cord. Pigs with intact umbilical cords were associated with lower (P < 0.01) Hct and Hb concentrations and born earlier (P < 0.01) in the birth order compared with pigs born with a ruptured umbilical cord. Pigs that did not survive to weaning had lower (P < 0.01) umbilical cord blood pH, HCO3, BE, sO2, TCO2, Na, glucose, and birth weight, and 24 hr weight compared with pigs alive at weaning. Pigs born in the first quartile for CumBI had higher (P <0.05) pH compared with pigs in the other three quartiles. Umbilical cord blood HCO3, BE, and TCO2 decreased (P <0.05) with each change in CumBI quartile from first to last. Blood glucose was lowest (P <0.05) in pigs born before 44 min and highest in pigs born after 164 min. Umbilical cord blood pH, HCO3, BE, TCO2, Na, glucose, Hct, and Hb were positively associated (P <0.001) with colostrum intake, indicating increased blood values resulted in higher colostrum intake. Although a pig may be live-born, their survival to 24 hr and to weaning is reduced when blood pH, HCO3, BE, and sO2 are lower reiterating the importance of management practices that can reduce the birth interval between pigs and the number of pigs experiencing moderate to severe hypoxia.

AbstractUnderstanding the relationship between sow and piglet characteristics that are associated with stillborn rate and preweaning mortality is beneficial as litter size continues to increase. Two experiments were previously conducted to evaluate prefarrowing nutrition regimens on sow and litter characteristics. These two datasets (experiments 1 and 2) were then used to identify sow and piglet characteristics associated with stillborn rate and piglet survival to weaning. A total of 1,201 sows that gave birth to 19,168 pigs comprised the dataset. The following characteristics were used in multivariate logistic regression analysis for traits associated with stillborn rate or survival to weaning: parity, litter weight, mean piglet birth weight, sow backfat, and BW at day 113 of gestation, gestation length, farrowing duration, litter size, piglet birth order, farrowing assistance, pig to teat ratio, colostrum intake, and colostrum yield. Sows within each experiment (herd) were categorized into quartiles for each of the independent variables to quantify the relationship to stillborn rate or survival to weaning. Increased stillborn rate was associated (P < 0.01) with heavier litter weights, lighter piglet birth weights, and larger litters in both experiments. In experiment 1, increased stillborn rate was associated (P < 0.01) with longer farrowing duration. Increased stillborn rate was associated with sows with less backfat depth at day 113, older parity, or increased farrowing assistance in experiment 2. In both experiments, pigs born later in the birth order had an increased (P < 0.01) risk of being stillborn. In both experiments, heavier piglet birth weight, greater colostrum intake, and lower total born were associated (P < 0.01) with increased survival to weaning. In experiment 2, pigs born in the first 75% of the litter, or in a litter with lower pig to teat ratio were associated (P < 0.01) with increased survival to weaning. Although the stillborn rate was similar between experiments (6.5% vs. 6.6%), differences in the traits associated with stillborn rate between studies indicate that some associated traits may be herd dependent. However, improving piglet birth weight, placing an emphasis on assisting pigs born later in the birth order and increasing colostrum intake will increase piglet survival from birth to weaning.

A total of 467 sows were used to evaluate the effect of feeding duration of increased lysine (Lys) and metabolizable energy (ME) prior to farrowing on sow and litter performance, piglet survival, and colostrum quality. Sows were blocked by body weight (BW) and parity category on day 106 of gestation and allotted to one of three dietary regimens starting on day 107 of gestation: 1) Control: 2.0 kg/d gestation feed (12.5 g standardized ileal digestible [SID] Lys and 6.5 Mcal ME) until day 113 of gestation, then 2.7 kg/d lactation feed (28 g SID Lys and 9.4 Mcal ME) until parturition; 2) 2.0 kg/d gestation feed (12.5 g SID Lys and 6.5 Mcal ME) until day 113 of gestation, then 3.8 kg/d lactation feed (40 g SID Lys and 13.3 Mcal ME) until parturition; or 3) 3.8 kg/d lactation feed (40 g SID Lys and 13.3 Mcal ME) until parturition. Data were analyzed for treatment within parity effects using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS. Increasing the duration of feeding additional Lys and ME increased (P < 0.05) sow weight gain from day 106 to 113. Sow backfat gain from day 106 to 113 of gestation increased (P < 0.05) in gilts and sows fed 3.8 kg/d of the lactation diet starting on day 107 vs. the control regimen. Average total born and born alive piglet birth weight (BiWt) were greater (P < 0.05) in gilts fed 3.8 kg/d lactation diet starting on day 107 or 113 vs. control, with no evidence (P > 0.05) for the difference in piglet BiWt in sows or weaning weight in gilts and sows. Piglet mortality after cross-fostering to weaning was decreased (P < 0.05) in sows fed 3.8 kg/d lactation diet starting on day 113 vs. control or increased lactation diet starting on day 107 but not in gilts. Litter gain from cross-foster to weaning was decreased (P < 0.05) in gilts fed 3.8 kg/d lactation diet starting on day 107 compared with control, with no evidence for difference in sows. Colostrum immunoglobulin G was increased (P < 0.05) in gilts and sows fed 3.8 kg/d of the lactation diet starting on day 113 compared with control. There was no evidence that dietary regimen influenced (P > 0.05) piglet colostrum intake or colostrum yield. There was also no evidence for difference (P > 0.05) among regimens in wean-to-estrus interval, subsequent farrowing rate, or subsequent litter characteristics. In conclusion, feeding increased Lys and ME prior to farrowing increased BW and backfat. Feeding increased Lys and ME when gilts were moved into the farrowing room increased BiWt, but reduced litter growth to weaning, with little evidence that sow performance was influenced in this study.

Four experiments were conducted using 1,100 to 1,188 pigs each (PIC 359 × 1,050) from ~27 to 127 kg BW to evaluate phase-feeding strategies based on Lys specifications and number of dietary phases for grow-finish pigs. Different phase-feeding strategies were used in each experiment with treatments consisting of a combination of 3 Lys specifications at 96%, 98%, or 100% of estimated requirement for growth rate and 4 phase-feeding strategies with 1, 2, 3, or 4 dietary phases. A single-phase-feeding strategy reduced (P < 0.05) overall growth performance, live BW, and HCW whether Lys specifications were at 98% or 100% of estimated requirements compared with multi-phase-feeding strategies. Lysine specifications at 96% of estimated requirements in a 4-phase-feeding strategy reduced (P < 0.05) overall growth performance compared with feeding strategies with Lys at 100% of estimated requirements, unless Lys specifications were increased to 100% of estimated requirements in the late finishing phase. Lysine specifications at 98% or 100% of estimated requirements in a 2-, 3- or 4-phase feeding strategy led to similar (P < 0.05) overall growth rate, live BW, and HCW of grow-finish pigs. Pigs fed 1, 2, or 3-phase feeding strategies or feeding strategies with Lys below the requirements in early grow finish had improved growth performance driven by improved feed efficiency in the period following low Lys levels, indicating the occurrence of compensatory growth. For carcass characteristics, there was no evidence (P > 0.10) for differences in carcass yield, back fat, loin depth, or lean percentage across feeding strategies in any of the experiments. In conclusion, phase-feeding strategies provide performance advantages over feeding a single dietary phase throughout the grow-finish period. Simplification of feeding strategies from 4 to 3 or 2 dietary phases with Lys specifications at 98% to 100% of estimated requirements for growth rate does not compromise overall growth performance and carcass characteristics of grow-finish pigs from 27 to 127 kg BW. Although, using feeding programs with fewer dietary phases and Lys set slightly below the requirements can compromise growth performance if initial BW and feed intake in the grow-finish period are lower than expected.

Two experiments were conducted to determine the standardized total tract digestible phosphorus (STTD P) requirement for 11- to 23-kg nursery pigs fed diets with or without phytase. A total of 1,080 and 2,140 pigs (PIC 359 × Camborough, Hendersonville, TN; initially 11.4 ± 0.29 and 11.1 ± 0.24 kg) were used in Exp. 1 and Exp. 2, respectively. There were 23 to 27 pigs per pen with 6 and 12 replicate pens per treatment in Exp. 1 and Exp. 2, respectively. After weaning, pigs were fed a common pelleted diet with 0.45% STTD P for 7 d, and a common phase 2 meal diet with 0.40% STTD P for 14 d in Exp. 1 and 18 d in Exp. 2. Pens of pigs were then allotted to dietary treatments in a randomized complete block design with body weight (BW) as the blocking factor. In Exp. 1, dietary treatments consisted of 0.26%, 0.30%, 0.33%, 0.38%, 0.43%, 0.48%, and 0.53% STTD P. Treatments were achieved with the inclusion of monocalcium phosphate at the expense of corn. In Exp. 2, diets contained 1,000 phytase units (FYT; Ronozyme Hiphos 2500, DSM Nutritional Products, Inc., Parsippany, NJ) with assumed release value 0.132% STTD P, and treatments consisted of 0.30%, 0.33%, 0.38%, 0.43%, 0.48%, 0.53%, and 0.58% STTD P. These STTD P concentrations included the expected phytase release of 0.132% STTD P. In both experiments, a similar 1.17:1 Ca:P ratio was maintained across treatments. Statistical models included linear model (LM), quadratic polynomial (QP), broken-line linear (BLL), and broken-line quadratic (BLQ). In Exp. 1, increasing STTD P increased (linear, P < 0.001) ADG, ADFI, G:F, final BW, and grams of STTD P intake per day and per kilogram of gain. There was also a marginal quadratic response for G:F (P < 0.066). In Exp. 2, ADG and G:F increased quadratically (P < 0.05), whereas ADFI increased linearly (P = 0.060) with increasing STTD P. The BLL and QP model provided similar fit to G:F in Exp. 1, estimating the requirement for maximum G:F at 0.34% and 0.42%, respectively. The BLL was the best fitting model for ADG and G:F in Exp. 2, estimating the breakpoint at 0.40% and 0.37% STTD P, respectively. The BLL and BLQ models estimated the breakpoint for ADG as a function of STTD P intake in grams per day at 2.92 and 3.02 g/d, respectively. These data provide empirical evidence that for 11- to 23-kg pigs, the NRC (2012) accurately estimates the STTD P requirement on a g/d basis. As a percentage of the diet, the STTD P requirement for diets without or with 1,000 FYT added phytase ranged from 0.34% to 0.42%.

Three experiments were conducted to determine the optimal dietary standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine and CP concentrations for finishing pigs over 100 kg BW. In Exp. 1, 253 pigs (DNA 600 × 241, initially 102.0 kg) were used in a 23-d trial with 7 to 8 pigs per pen and 8 pens per treatment. Dietary treatments contained 4 SID lysine concentrations (0.45, 0.55, 0.65, or 0.75%). To formulate the experimental diets, a corn-soybean meal diet with 0.45% SID lysine was formulated without L-lysine HCl. Then, a corn-soybean meal diet containing 0.75% SID lysine was formulated including 0.23% L-lysine HCl. The 0.45 and 0.75% SID lysine diets were blended to provide the 0.55 and 0.65% SID lysine diets. Increasing SID lysine increased (quadratic, P < 0.05) ADG and ADFI with pigs fed 0.55% SID lysine having the greatest final BW. Marginal improvements in gain:feed (G:F; quadratic, P = 0.058) and carcass yield (linear, P = 0.051) and reduction in backfat (quadratic, P = 0.074) were also observed with increasing SID lysine. The quadratic polynomial models predicted maximum ADG and G:F at 0.62 and 0.63% SID lysine, respectively. The broken-line linear model predicted no further improvement in G:F over 0.55% SID lysine. In Exp. 2, 224 pigs (PIC 327 × 1050, initially 109.4 kg) were used in a 20-d trial with 7 pigs per pen and 7 to 8 pens per treatment. Dietary treatments included 4 concentrations of CP (10, 11, 12, or 13%) that were formed by reducing the amount of L-lysine HCl in a corn-soybean meal diet. Increasing CP increased (linear, P < 0.05) ADG and ADFI with the greatest responses observed in pigs fed the diet with 12% CP. Increasing dietary CP also improved (linear, P < 0.05) G:F, final BW, and hot carcass weight (HCW). In Exp. 3, 238 pigs (DNA 600 × 241, initially 111.8 kg) were used in a 26-d trial with 7 to 8 pigs and 6 pens per treatment. Dietary treatments included 5 concentrations of CP (9, 10, 11, 12, or 13%). Increasing CP improved (quadratic, P < 0.05) ADG and G:F with the greatest response observed in pigs fed 13% CP. Increasing CP marginally increased (quadratic, P < 0.074) HCW, with the greatest response observed in pigs fed 12% CP. In conclusion, the SID lysine requirement for pigs from 100 to 122 kg was 0.55 to 0.63% depending on the response criteria with performance maximized with diets containing 12 to 13% CP.

Although chromium (Cr) feeding study results have been variable, our hypothesis was feeding a regimen that changed dosage over time would result in a larger positive response in growth performance and carcass characteristics. In Exp. 1, a total of 1,206 pigs (PIC 337 × 1050, initial BW 28.7 kg) were used with 27 pigs per pen and 9 pens per treatment. Diets were corn-soybean meal-dried distillers grains with solubles based and were fed in a five-phase feeding program. Treatments were arranged as a 2 × 2 + 1 factorial with a control diet containing no added Cr propionate (Kemin Industries Inc., Des Moines, IA), or diets with either 100 or 200 µg/kg added Cr during the grower (dietary phases 1 and 2) and/or finisher (dietary phases 3, 4, and 5) periods. During the grower period, ADG and G:F were similar among pigs fed the control or 100 µg/kg added Cr diets, but decreased in pigs fed 200 µg/kg Cr (quadratic, P ≤ 0.001). During the finisher period, pigs supplemented with 200 µg/kg added Cr had the greatest ADG and G:F (quadratic, P ≤ 0.019). Overall, increasing Cr had no effect on ADG or ADFI; but G:F was greatest (quadratic, P = 0.020) when pigs were fed 100 µg/kg of added Cr throughout. Carcass characteristics were not influenced by Cr dosage or feeding regimen. In Exp. 2, a total of 1,206 pigs (PIC 359 × 1050, initial BW 48.9 kg) were used with 27 pigs per pen and 15 pens per treatment. Diets were corn-soybean meal, dried distillers grains with solubles based and were fed in four phases. There were three dietary treatments: a diet with no added Cr for both grower (dietary phase 1 and 2) and finisher (dietary phase 3 and 4) periods, a diet with 200 µg/kg added Cr during the grower and 100 µg/kg added Cr during the finisher periods, or a diet with 200 µg/kg added Cr for both periods. Addition of 200 µg/kg Cr in both periods marginally increased (P < 0.10) ADG compared with pigs fed no added Cr. There was no evidence (P ≥ 0.523) of added Cr influencing overall ADFI and G:F. Percentage carcass yield was reduced (P = 0.018) when Cr was added at 200 µg/kg for both periods, with no evidence of differences (P ≥ 0.206) in other carcass characteristics. In summary, overall G:F was improved in Exp. 1, and ADG in Exp. 2, by added Cr, but there was no evidence that different feeding regimens will consistently result in improved performance. However, these data are consistent with the literature in that added Cr in growing-finishing pigs diets improves, albeit small, ADG or G:F.

Diet treatments were arranged in a split-plot design with the whole-plot consisting of 1 of 6 concentrations of dietary Cu (22 to 134 mg/kg total Cu) and the subplot using 1 of 2 sampling techniques (probe vs. hand grab). A total of 6 feeders per treatment were sampled using a brass open handle probe. The probe was inserted into the feeder 4 times to obtain a 900 g of sample. The hand-collected samples were obtained by inserting a bare hand into the feeder approximately 8 times to obtain a 900 g of sample. Within a feeder and sampling technique, subsamples (200 g) were created by using a sample splitting device. In addition to the 6 individual feeder samples, a subsample (33 g) from each individual feeder was pooled within dietary treatment and sampling technique to form a single composite sample (200 g). This process was repeated until 4 individual composite samples were created for each diet and sampling technique. Next, all samples were ground through a centrifugal mill and submitted for mineral analysis in duplicate for Cu, Zn, Ca, and P analysis. Results indicated variability when sampling feeders with a probe were reduced (P = 0.013) for Cu and marginally reduced (P = 0.058) for Ca when compared with hand-sampling. However, no evidence for differences was detected among sampling techniques for Zn and P for the individual feeder analysis. When samples were pooled from 6 feeders to form a single composite sample, there was no evidence for differences detected among sampling techniques for Cu, Zn, Ca, and P analysis. From these results, sampling frequency calculations were determined to assess sampling accuracy within a 95% confidence interval. Results indicated that the number of feeders or composite samples required to analyze was less for Cu, Zn, Ca, and P analysis when using a probe compared with a hand sampling. In summary, sampling with a probe is associated with less variability on an individual sample basis, but when individual samples are pooled to form a composite sample, there was no evidence for difference among sampling techniques. Our results suggest samples collected for these analyses with a probe and composited would be the best option to minimize variation and analytical costs.

Histidine may be the sixth limiting amino acid (AA) in practical nursery diets supplemented with high amounts of feed-grade AA. Therefore, 2 experiments were conducted to determine the standardized ileal digestible (SID) His:Lys ratio requirement estimate for growth performance of 7- to 11-kg nursery pigs. A total of 360 and 350 pigs (DNA 241 × 600, Columbus, NE; initially 7.1 ± 0.31 and 6.6 ± 0.36 kg) were used in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively. There were 5 pigs per pen with 12 replicates per treatment in Exp. 1 and 10 replicates per treatment in Exp. 2. After weaning, pigs were fed a common pelleted diet for 10 d in Exp. 1 and 7 d in Exp. 2. Then, pens were assigned to treatments in a randomized complete block design with body weight (BW) as the blocking factor. Dietary treatments consisted of SID His:Lys ratios of 24%, 28%, 32%, 36%, 40%, and 44% in Exp. 1 and 24%, 28%, 30%, 32%, 34%, 36%, and 42% in Exp. 2. Experimental diets were fed in pellet form for 10 or 14 d in Exp. 1 and 2, followed by a common mash diet for 15 or 14 d, respectively. Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX and NLMIXED procedures of SAS, fitting data with heterogeneous variance when needed. The competing statistical models utilized were quadratic polynomial, broken-line linear (BLL), and broken-line quadratic. In Exp. 1, increasing SID His:Lys ratio increased (quadratic, P = 0.001) ADG, ADFI, G:F, and day 10 BW. In Exp. 2, ADG, G:F, and day 14 BW increased (quadratic, P = 0.001), and ADFI increased linearly (P = 0.001) with increasing SID His:Lys ratio. The best-fitting model for all response variables analyzed was the BLL. In Exp. 1, requirement estimates were 29.7%, 29.1%, and 29.8% SID His:Lys ratio for ADG, ADFI, and G:F, respectively. In Exp. 2, the SID His:Lys ratio requirement estimates were 31.0% for ADG and 28.6% for G:F. These results suggest that the SID His requirement estimate for growth performance is no more than 31% of Lys and that the NRC (2012) SID His requirement of 34% of Lys may be overestimated for 7- to 11-kg pigs.

A total of 757 pigs (PIC 337 × 1050; initially 27.6 kg BW) were used in a 117-d experiment to determine the effects of added Cu from tribasic copper chloride and diet type on growth performance, carcass characteristics, energy digestibility, gut morphology, and mucosal mRNA expression of finishing pigs. Pens of pigs were allotted to 1 of 4 dietary treatments, balanced on average pen weight in a randomized complete block design with 26 to 28 pigs per pen and 7 replications per treatment. Treatments were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial with main effects of diet type, a corn-soybean meal-based diet (corn-soy) or a high by-product diet (by-product) with 30% distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) and 15% bakery meal, and added Cu (0 or 150 mg/kg added Cu). There were no Cu × diet type interactions for growth performance. Overall, neither added Cu nor diet type influenced growth performance. However, caloric efficiency was decreased (P = 0.001) for pigs fed the by-product diet compared to the corn-soy diet. Pigs fed the by-product diet had decreased (P < 0.05) carcass yield and carcass G:F) and marginally decreased (P < 0.07) HCW and carcass ADG compared to pigs fed the corn-soy diet. A Cu × diet type interaction (P < 0.05) existed for DM and GE digestibility during the early finishing period as added Cu improved (P < 0.05) digestibility of DM and GE in the corn-soy diet, but not in the by-product diet. During the late finishing period, added Cu marginally increased (P = 0.060) DM and GE digestibility while pigs fed the by-product diet had decreased DM and GE digestibility (P = 0.001) compared to those fed the corn-soy diet. For gut morphology, pigs fed added Cu had decreased crypt depth (P = 0.017) in the distal small intestine compared to those fed no added Cu. Furthermore, relative mRNA expression of intestinal fatty acid binding protein (iFABP) was decreased (P = 0.032) in pigs fed added Cu compared to those fed no added Cu. In summary, adding 150 mg/kg added Cu or including 30% DDGS and 15% bakery meal into a corn-soy diet did not influence growth performance. However, HCW ADG and HCW G:F were reduced in pigs fed the by-product diet compared to the corn-soy diet. Only minor differences in gut morphology or mRNA expression were observed from feeding diets with high levels of Cu or by-products compared to a corn-soy diet.

Two, 120-d, experiments were conducted to determine the effects of standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine (Lys), added Cu (tribasic copper chloride, Intellibond C; Micronutrients, Inc., Indianapolis, IN), and duration of Cu supplementation on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and fat quality in finishing pigs. In Exp. 1, 1,248 pigs (PIC 337 × 1050; initially 29.0 kg) were allotted to one of six dietary treatments, balanced on average pen weight in a randomized complete-block design with 26 pigs per pen and eight replications per treatment. Treatments were arranged in a 3 × 2 factorial with main effects of SID Lys (85, 92.5, and 100% of the estimated requirement) and added Cu (0 or 150 mg/kg). There were no Cu × SID Lys interactions observed for growth performance or liver Cu concentrations. Increasing SID Lys increased (linear, P < 0.05) ADG, feed efficiency (G:F), final weight, and HCW. Pigs fed 150 mg/kg added Cu had marginally increased (P < 0.10) ADG, G:F, and final weight. Liver Cu concentrations were greater (P = 0.001) in pigs fed added Cu. A marginal Cu × Lys interaction (P = 0.052) was observed for jowl fat iodine value (IV) as increasing SID Lys in pigs fed added Cu increased IV, but decreased IV in pigs not fed added Cu. For Exp. 2, 1,267 pigs (PIC 337 × 1,050; initially 26.4 kg) were allotted to one of eight dietary treatments arranged in a split-plot design. Whole-plot treatments included SID Lys (92.5 or 100% of the estimated requirement) and within each Lys level, there was a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments with either 0 or 150 mg/kg added Cu and two feeding durations (60 or 120 d). Added Cu did not affect growth performance. Pigs fed 100% of the SID Lys requirement had increased (P < 0.05) ADG, G:F, and final weight compared with those fed 92.5%. A Cu × SID Lys interaction (P < 0.05) was observed for carcass yield and backfat depth. Pigs fed 92.5% SID Lys had increased carcass yield and decreased backfat depth with added Cu; however, pigs fed 100% SID Lys had decreased carcass yield and increased backfat depth with added Cu. Hot carcass weight was increased (P < 0.05) by feeding 100% SID Lys and was marginally (P < 0.10) increased by adding Cu to the diets. In summary, the growth response to added Cu was inconsistent between experiments; however, increasing SID Lys improved growth performance and carcass characteristics.

Two studies were conducted to evaluate the growth performance and percentage bone ash of nursery pigs fed various combinations of Ca and P provided by inorganic sources or phytase. In Exp. 1, pens of pigs (n = 720, initially 6.1 ± 0.98 kg) were blocked by initial BW. Within blocks, pens were randomly assigned to one of six treatments (12 pens per treatment) in a three-phase diet regimen. Treatments were arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial with main effects of Ca (0.58% vs. 1.03%) and standardized total tract digestible (STTD) P (0.33% and 0.45% without phytase, and 0.45% with 0.12% of the P released by phytase). During treatment period, Ca × P interactions were observed for all growth criteria (P < 0.05). When diets had low Ca, pigs fed 0.45% STTD P with phytase had greater (P < 0.01) ADG and ADFI than those fed 0.33% or 0.45% STTD P without phytase. When high Ca was fed, ADG and ADFI were similar among pigs fed 0.45% STTD P with or without phytase and were greater than those fed 0.33% STTD P. Gain:feed was reduced (P < 0.01) when high Ca and low STTD P were fed relative to other treatments. On d 21, radiuses were collected from 1 pig per pen for bone ash analysis. Pigs fed 0.33% STTD P had decreased (P < 0.05) percentage bone ash than those fed 0.45% STTD P with or without phytase when high Ca was fed, but this P effect was not observed for low Ca diets (Ca × P interaction, P = 0.007). In Exp. 2, 36 pens (10 pigs per pen, initially 6.0 ± 1.08 kg) were used in a completely randomized design. Treatments were arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial with the main effects of STTD P (at or above NRC [NRC. 2012. Nutrient Requirements of Swine. 11th rev. ed. Washington (DC): National Academic Press.] requirement estimates) and total Ca (0.65, 0.90, and 1.20%). Experimental diets were fed during phases 1 and 2, followed by a common phase 3 diet. Diets at NRC (2012) P level contained 0.45% and 0.40% STTD P, compared with 0.56% and 0.52% for diets greater than the NRC (2012) estimates, in phase 1 and 2, respectively. During treatment period, increasing Ca decreased (linear, P = 0.006) ADG, but increasing STTD P marginally increased (P = 0.084) ADG, with no Ca × P interaction. When diets contained NRC (2012) P levels, pigs fed 1.20% Ca had decreased (P < 0.05) G:F than those fed 0.65% or 0.90% Ca; however, when high STTD P were fed, G:F was not affected by Ca (Ca × P interaction, P = 0.018). In conclusion, excess Ca decreased pig growth and percentage bone ash when diets were at or below NRC (2012) requirement for STTD P, but these negative effects were alleviated by adding monocalcium P or phytase to the diet.

Two experiments were conducted to estimate the standardized ileal digestible valine:lysine (SID Val:Lys) dose response effects in 25- to 45-kg pigs under commercial conditions. In experiment 1, a total of 1,134 gilts (PIC 337 × 1050), initially 31.2 kg ± 2.0 kg body weight (BW; mean ± SD) were used in a 19-d growth trial with 27 pigs per pen and seven pens per treatment. In experiment 2, a total of 2,100 gilts (PIC 327 × 1050), initially 25.4 ± 1.9 kg BW were used in a 22-d growth trial with 25 pigs per pen and 12 pens per treatment. Treatments were blocked by initial BW in a randomized complete block design. In experiment 1, there were a total of six dietary treatments with SID Val at 59.0, 62.5, 65.9, 69.6, 73.0, and 75.5% of Lys and for experiment 2 there were a total of seven dietary treatments with SID Val at 57.0, 60.6, 63.9, 67.5, 71.1, 74.4, and 78.0% of Lys. Experimental diets were formulated to ensure that Lys was the second limiting amino acid throughout the experiments. Initially, linear mixed models were fitted to data from each experiment. Then, data from the two experiments were combined to estimate dose-responses using a broken-line linear ascending (BLL) model, broken-line quadratic ascending (BLQ) model, or quadratic polynomial (QP). Model fit was compared using Bayesian information criterion (BIC). In experiment 1, ADG increased linearly (P = 0.009) with increasing SID Val:Lys with no apparent significant impact on G:F. In experiment 2, ADG and ADFI increased in a quadratic manner (P < 0.002) with increasing SID Val:Lys whereas G:F increased linearly (P < 0.001). Overall, the best-fitting model for ADG was a QP, whereby the maximum mean ADG was estimated at a 73.0% (95% CI: [69.5, >78.0%]) SID Val:Lys. For G:F, the overall best-fitting model was a QP with maximum estimated mean G:F at 69.0% (95% CI: [64.0, >78.0]) SID Val:Lys ratio. However, 99% of the maximum mean performance for ADG and G:F were achieved at, 68% and 63% SID Val:Lys ratio, respectively. Therefore, the SID Val:Lys requirement ranged from73.0% for maximum ADG to 63.2% SID Val:Lys to achieve 99% of maximum G:F in 25- to 45-kg BW pigs.

A total of 360 pigs (DNA 200 × 400, initially 5.9 ± 0.1 kg) were used in a 42 d trial to determine the effect of high doses of a recently available phytase source (Natuphos E 5000 G, BASF Corporation, Florham Park, NJ) on nursery pig growth and bone ash. Pigs were randomly allotted to pens at weaning by BW and pens were allotted to one of eight corn-soybean meal-based dietary treatments in a randomized complete block design. There were five pigs per pen and nine pens per treatment. Diets were fed in three phases (d 0 to 7, 7 to 21, and 21 to 42) with formulated total calcium:phosphorus (Ca:P) of 1.07, 1.05, and 0.93, respectively. Treatments included a negative control (NC) with 0.40, 0.30, or 0.25% aP from monocalcium P for Phases 1, 2, and 3 respectively; and NC with either 500, 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, or 4,000 FTU/kg phytase. The last two treatments were a positive control (PC) with 0.55, 0.45, or 0.40% aP from monocalcium P for Phases 1, 2, and 3, respectively, or PC with 2,000 FTU/kg phytase. The NC diet with 500 FTU/kg and PC without added phytase were formulated to be equivalent in available Ca and P. On d 42, one pig per pen was euthanized and the right fibula was removed for bone ash analysis. From d 0 to 42, pigs fed increasing phytase in the NC tended to have increased (quadratic, P = 0.064) ADG and (linear, P = 0.082) ending BW and had improved (quadratic, P = 0.008) G:F. Adding 2,000 FTU/kg phytase to the PC did not influence ADG or ADFI, but tended to improve (P = 0.060) G:F compared with the PC. In addition, percentage bone ash increased as phytase increased in the NC (linear, P < 0.001) or when 2,000 FTU/kg was added to the PC diets (P < 0.001). Pigs fed the PC had increased (P = 0.007) ADFI and tended to have greater (P = 0.099) percentage bone ash than pigs fed NC+500 FTU/kg phytase, but the pigs fed NC+500 FTU/kg phytase had improved (P = 0.032) G:F compared to pigs fed the PC. In summary, increasing concentrations of dietary phytase in a P-deficient diet improved growth and bone ash measurements, and was optimized at 1,000 FTU/kg. There were varied improvements when 2,000 FTU/kg phytase was added in P adequate diets.

Heavy metals, such as copper, are increasingly supplemented in swine diets as an alternative to antibiotics to promote growth. Enterococci, a common gut commensal, acquire plasmid-borne, transferable copper resistance (tcrB) gene-mediated resistance to copper. The plasmid also carried resistance genes to tetracyclines and macrolides. The potential genetic link between copper and antibiotic resistance suggests that copper supplementation may exert a selection pressure for antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, a longitudinal study was conducted to investigate the effects of in-feed copper, chlortetracycline, and tylosin alone or in combination on the selection and co-selection of antimicrobial-resistant enterococci. The study included 240 weaned piglets assigned randomly to 6 dietary treatment groups: control, copper, chlortetracycline, tylosin, copper and chlortetracycline, and copper and tylosin. Feces were collected before (day 0), during (days 7, 14, 21), and after (days 28 and 35) initiating treatment, and enterococcal isolates were obtained from each fecal sample and tested for genotypic and phenotypic resistance to copper and antibiotics. A total of 2592 enterococcal isolates were tested for tcrB by polymerase chain reaction. The overall prevalence of tcrB-positive enterococci was 14.3% (372/2592). Among the tcrB-positive isolates, 331 were Enterococcus faecium and 41 were E. faecalis. All tcrB-positive isolates contained both erm(B) and tet(M) genes. The median minimum inhibitory concentration of copper for tcrB-negative and tcrB-positive enterococci was 6 and 18 mM, respectively. The majority of isolates (95/100) were resistant to multiple antibiotics. In conclusion, supplementing copper or antibiotics alone did not increase copper-resistant enterococci; however, supplementing antibiotics with copper increased the prevalence of the tcrB gene among fecal enterococci of piglets.

Use of in-feed antibiotics such as chlortetracycline (CTC) in food animals is fiercely debated as a cause of antimicrobial resistance in human pathogens; as a result, alternatives to antibiotics such as heavy metals have been proposed. We used a total community DNA approach to experimentally investigate the effects of CTC and copper supplementation on the presence and quantity of antimicrobial resistance elements in the gut microbial ecology of pigs. Total community DNA was extracted from 569 fecal samples collected weekly over a 6-week period from groups of 5 pigs housed in 32 pens that were randomized to receive either control, CTC, copper, or copper plus CTC regimens. Qualitative and quantitative PCR were used to detect the presence of 14 tetracycline resistance (tet) genes and to quantify gene copies of tetA, tetB, blaCMY-2 (a 3rd generation cephalosporin resistance gene), and pcoD (a copper resistance gene), respectively. The detection of tetA and tetB decreased over the subsequent sampling periods, whereas the prevalence of tetC and tetP increased. CTC and copper plus CTC supplementation increased both the prevalence and gene copy numbers of tetA, while decreasing both the prevalence and gene copies of tetB. In summary, tet gene presence was initially very diverse in the gut bacterial community of weaned pigs; thereafter, copper and CTC supplementation differentially impacted the prevalence and quantity of the various tetracycline, ceftiofur and copper resistance genes resulting in a less diverse gene population.

Zinc (Zn) is often supplemented at elevated concentrations in swine diets, particularly in piglets, to prevent enteric infections and promote growth. Previous studies from Denmark have suggested a genetic linkage and a phenotypic association between Zn resistance, encoded by czrC, and methicillin-resistance conferred by mecA in Staphylococcus aureus. Such an association has not been reported in the U.S. swine population. We conducted an analysis of the effects of Zn, supplemented as zinc oxide (ZnO), on the nasal carriage of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in nursery (n=40) and finisher pigs (n=40) enrolled in a nutritional study. Nasal swabs, collected from nursery and finisher pigs, were inoculated onto MRSA CHROMagar and presumptive MRSA colonies were tested for the presence of mecA and czrC genes by polymerase chain reaction. Zinc susceptibility was determined by the agar dilution method. The prevalence of mecA-positive MRSA was 10% (4/40) and 20% (8/40) among nursery and finisher pigs, respectively. Of the 12 mecA-positive S. aureus isolates, 7 had the czrC gene (58.3%) compared to none among the 68 mecA-negative isolates. The presence of both mecA (p=0.002) and czrC (p=0.006) genes were positively associated with higher levels of Zn supplementation. The median minimum inhibitory concentrations of Zn for czrC-positive and czrC-negative isolates were 12 and 2 mM, respectively (p<0.0001). The link between czrC and mecA genes suggests the importance of elevated Zn supplementation in the co-selection and propagation of methicillin resistance among S. aureus in pigs.

High concentration of copper, fed as copper sulfate, is often used to increase growth rates in swine. Bacteria exposed to copper may acquire resistance, and in Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis, a plasmid-borne transferable copper resistance (tcrB) gene that confers copper resistance has been reported. Our objectives were to determine the occurrence of tcrB in fecal enterococci from weaned piglets fed diets with a normal supplemental level (16.5 ppm) or an elevated supplemental level (125 ppm) of copper and to determine the association of tcrB with copper, erythromycin, and vancomycin resistance. A total of 323 enterococcal isolates were examined and 15 (4.6%) isolates (14 E. faecium and 1 E. faecalis) were positive for tcrB. Fifteen tcrB-positive and 15 randomly chosen tcrB-negative isolates from piglets fed the normal supplemental level of copper were tested for erm(B), tet(M), vanA, and vanB genes and susceptibilities to copper, erythromycin, tetracyclines, and vancomycin. All tcrB-positive and -negative isolates contained erm(B) and tet(M), but not vanA and vanB. The mean minimum inhibitory concentration of copper for tcrB-positive (21.1 mM) was higher (p < 0.001) compared with tcrB-negative isolates (6.1 mM). All isolates were resistant to erythromycin and tetracyclines and susceptible to vancomycin. The transferability of the tcrB gene from tcrB-positive strains to tcrB-negative strains was demonstrated by conjugation. The potential link between tcrB and antibiotic resistance genes and the propensity of enterococci to transfer tcrB to other strains raises the possibility that copper supplementation may exert selection pressure for antibiotic-resistant enterococci. This study is the first report on the occurrence of the tcrB gene in enterococci isolated from swine in the United States.
