RESUMEN

Non-aerated bacteria-algae system gaining O2 through photosynthesis presents an alternative for costly mechanical aeration. This study investigated oxygen supply and performance of nutrients removal at low and high light intensity (LL and HL). The results showed that P removal was high and robust (LL 97 ± 1.8 %, HL 95 % ± 2.9 %), while NH4+-N removal fluctuated dramatically (LL 66 ± 14.7 %, HL 84 ± 8.6 %). Oxygen generated at illumination of 200 µmol m-2 s-1, 6 h was sufficient to sustain aerobic phase for 2.25 g/L MLSS. However, O2 produced by algae was preferentially captured in the order of heterotrophic bacteria (HB), ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB), nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB). Oxygen affinity coupled with light intensity led to NOB suppression with stable nitrite accumulation ratio of 57 %. Free nitrous acid (FNA) and light stimulated the abundance of denitrifying polyphosphate accumulating organism (DPAO) of Flavobacterium, but with declined P-accumulating metabolism (PAM) of P release, P/C, K/P and Mg/P ratios. Flavobacterium and cyanobacteria Leptolyngbya, along with biologically induced CaP in extracellular polymeric substances was the key to robust P removal. AOB of Ellin6067 and DPAO of Flavobacteria offer a promising scenario for partial nitrification-denitrifying phosphorus removal.

RESUMEN

Transcatheter radiofrequency ablation has been widely introduced for the treatment of tachyarrhythmias. The demand for catheter ablation continues to grow rapidly as the level of recommendation for catheter ablation. Traditional catheter ablation is performed under the guidance of X-rays. X-rays can help display the heart contour and catheter position, but the radiobiological effects caused by ionizing radiation and the occupational injuries worn caused by medical staff wearing heavy protective equipment cannot be ignored. Three-dimensional mapping system and intracardiac echocardiography can provide detailed anatomical and electrical information during cardiac electrophysiological study and ablation procedure, and can also greatly reduce or avoid the use of X-rays. In recent years, fluoroless catheter ablation technique has been well demonstrated for most arrhythmic diseases. Several centers have reported performing procedures in a purposefully designed fluoroless electrophysiology catheterization laboratory (EP Lab) without fixed digital subtraction angiography equipment. In view of the lack of relevant standardized configurations and operating procedures, this expert task force has written this consensus statement in combination with relevant research and experience from China and abroad, with the aim of providing guidance for hospitals (institutions) and physicians intending to build a fluoroless cardiac EP Lab, implement relevant technologies, promote the standardized construction of the fluoroless cardiac EP Lab.

There is a huge demand for brewing water in tea consumption, and the sensory flavor of tea infusion is significantly affected by the water used for brewing. To investigate the impact of brewing water on the aroma of tea infusions made from Camelia senensis, the three tea infusions of green, oolong and black tea brewed by six different drinking waters were analyzed by sensory evaluation, solid-phase microextraction, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and chemometrics. Brewing water with high pH values (>8.10) and high TDS content (>140 ppm) resulted in a lower overall aroma acceptability for tea infusion, where HCO3-, Ca2+ and Mg2+ were key influencing ions. A total of 86, 106, and 131 volatiles were identified in green, oolong and black tea infusions, respectively, which were strongly influenced by six different brands of waters. Decanal, dimethyl sulfide, ß-ionone and linalool were potent volatiles in tea aroma changes caused by brewing water.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the sleep status and risk factors for sleep problems in infants and young children in Jilin Province. METHODS: A total of 1 080 healthy infants and young children aged 0-3 years from eight prefecture-level cities and one autonomous prefecture in Jilin Province were selected as subjects. A self-designed questionnaire was used to collect the general information of the subjects, and the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire was used to understand the sleep status of the subjects. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the risk factors for sleep problems. RESULTS: The total detection rate of sleep problems in the infants and young children was 38.24% (413/1 080). The total sleep time in the 4-11 month, 12-24 month, and 25-36 month age groups was higher than the recommended total sleep time (P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that full-term birth, higher educational level of the main caregiver, and higher daytime activity intensity were protective factors for sleep problems in the infants and young children (P<0.05), while lower frequency of vitamin D supplementation, frequent night feeding, and maternal snoring were risk factors for sleep problems (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The total sleep time of infants and young children over 4 months old in Jilin Province is higher than the recommended total sleep time, but the prevalence rate of sleep problems is higher. The occurrence of sleep problems is related to various factors. Strengthening follow-up on preterm infants, providing education on infant sleep knowledge to primary caregivers, and regularly supplementing with vitamin D can be beneficial in reducing sleep problems in infants and young children.

Phorbol is a tetracyclic diterpenoid found in Euphorbia tirucalli, Croton tiglium, and Rehmannia glutinosa, and is nuclear of various phorbol esters. The rapid obtaining of phorbol with high purity highly contributes to its application, such as synthesizing phorbol esters with designable side chains and particular therapeutic efficacy. This study introduced a biphasic alcoholysis method for obtaining phorbol from croton oil by using polarity imparity organic solvents in both phases and established a high-speed countercurrent chromatography method for simultaneous separation and purification of phorbol. The optimized operation conditions of biphasic alcoholysis were a reaction time of 91 min, a temperature of 14°C, and a croton oil-methanol ratio of 1:30 (g:ml). The phorbol during the biphasic alcoholysis was 3.2-fold higher in content than that obtained in conventional monophasic alcoholysis. The optimized high-speed countercurrent chromatography method was using the ethyl acetate/n-butyl alcohol/water at 4.7:0.3:5 (v:v:v) with Na2 SO4 at 0.36 g/10 ml as the solvent system, using the mobile phase flow rate of 2 ml/min, the revolution of 800 r/min, under which the retention of the stationary phase was achieved at 72.83%. The crystallized phorbol following high-speed countercurrent chromatography was obtained as high purity of 94%.

BACKGROUND: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a serious and fatal heart disease with one of the highest mortality rates in the world. In some countries, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is the preferred reperfusion strategy after AMI, but it cannot achieve safe and effective treatment of AMI after PCI remains a challenging clinical problem. The potential of oral Chinese patent medicines to treat AMI after PCI has been demonstrated, but which type of oral Chinese patent medicines may be preferred remains controversial. The aim of this network meta-analysis was to investigate the efficacy and safety of multiple oral Chinese patent medicines in the treatment of AMI after PCI. METHODS: We will conduct a literature search from China National Knowledge Infrastructure, formerly Chinese Biomedical Database (SinoMed), Wanfang Data, Chongqing VIP, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library (The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews) from their inception until to November 1, 2022, with language restricted to Chinese and English. Then, the study selection process will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Meta-Analyses guideline, and the quality assessment will be conducted with Cochrane Collaboration's tool. Pairwise and network meta-analysis will be conducted using the WinBUGS V.1.4.3.37 and STATA V.13. Additionally, sensitivity analysis, subgroup analysis, quality assessment, Small-study effects and publication bias will be performed. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This work is based on published research and therefore does not require ethical approval. This review will be published in peer-reviewed journals. Bacteria-algae consortia in the light bring the benefit of O2 production and CO2 reduction for wastewater treatment, while the bottleneck for application is how it behaves in the dark. In this study, inoculum ratio and sludge retention time (SRT) affected nutrient removal rather than chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. Dark conditions (with a sludge/Chlorella inoculum ratio of 1:2 at a SRT of 15 d) achieved comparable performance to those of light conditions, due to bacteria contribution and mechanical aeration. Compared with light conditions, the ratio of Chla/Chlb decreased and Caro/(Chla + Chlb) increased to response oxidative stress. In the dark, algae were associated with Nitrosomonas and Dechloromonas. Flavobacterium disassociated with Chlorella in the dark but associated with Chlorella in the light. Moreover, nitritation genes (amo and Hao) and denitrifying gene (narH) were up-regulated, while P metabolism genes (PPX and PPK) were down-regulated. It is proposed to enrich Nitrosomonas in the night and denitrify polyphosphate accumulating organisms (DPAO) in the daytime to establish short-cut nitrification and denitrifying phosphorus removal in practical applications.

Metal ions in sediment are inherent Ca and Fe sources for biochar modification. In this work, the effect of Ca2+ and Fe2+ released from sediment on biochar for phosphorus adsorption was evaluated. Results showed that raw peanut shell biochar (PSB) was poor in phosphorus adsorption (0.48 mg/g); sediment-triggered biochar (S-PSB) exhibited a P adsorption capacity of 1.32 mg/g in capping reactor and maximum adsorption capacity of 10.72 mg/g in the Langmuir model. Sediment released Ca2+ of 2.2-4.1 mg/L and Fe2+/Fe3+ of 0.2-9.0 mg/L. The metals loaded onto the biochar surface in the forms of Ca-O and Fe-O, with Ca and Fe content of 1.47 and 0.29%, respectively. Sediment metals made point of zero charge (pHpzc) of biochar shifted from 5.39 to 6.46. The mechanisms of enhanced P adsorption by S-PSB were surface complexation of CaHPO4 followed by precipitation of Ca3(PO4)2 and Ca5(PO4)3(OH). Sediment metals induced the modification of biochar and improvement of P adsorption, which was feasible to overcome the shortcomings of biochar on phosphorus control in sediment capping.

With the popularization of medical knowledge and the development of medical technology, people pay more and more attention to COPD. This paper mainly studies the effect of virtual reality technology combined with comprehensive lung rehabilitation on patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. 60 patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were selected to collect their general information, such as name, gender, and age. They were divided into the experimental group and control group, 30 patients in each group. The experimental group was treated with virtual reality technology combined with lung rehabilitation, while the control group was treated with conventional rehabilitation. Patients in both groups needed medication and participated in a 30-minute disease description activity once a week. In addition, patients in the control group should walk for 20 minutes every day to monitor muscle fatigue. Breathing exercises are also carried out regularly. Patients are instructed to use their lips and abdomen for 5 minutes each time. The respiratory rate was 7 beats per minute. In addition to the routine training of the control group, the experimental group will also train the simulated bicycle for 20 minutes, which will be automatically saved on the computer after the training. After the experiment, the muscle function and motor ability of the two groups were evaluated, and the results were statistically analyzed. The total self-efficacy scores of patients before and after telemedicine technical support increased significantly (2.15 ± 0.21 before telemedicine technical support, 2.39 ± 0.20 after telemedicine technical support), and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The results show that the application of virtual reality technology can improve the rehabilitation belief of patients and strengthen the training effect.

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies have suggested that there is a significant correlation between left ventricular (LV) false tendon and premature ventricular complexes (PVCs). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the electrophysiological characteristics and the outcome of radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) for this category of PVCs. METHODS: From a total of 2284 patients with idiopathic PVCs who underwent catheter ablation at 6 institutions in China, intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) was used during the procedure in 346 cases; 10 patients (2.9%) with PVCs associated with false tendon were retrospectively reviewed and enrolled in the present study. Activation mapping and pace mapping were performed to localize the origin of PVCs. ICE was used in all patients. If the false tendon was directly visualized and identified, we attempted to identify the distinct relationship with the PVC origin. RESULTS: The PVCs were successfully eliminated by ablation in all patients. The target sites were confirmed to be related to false tendon. The origin of PVCs was located at the attachment of the false tendon to the papillary muscle, LV septum, or LV apex. At the target site, high-frequency Purkinje potentials were observed preceding local ventricular activation in 7 patients. CONCLUSION: LV false tendon can be associated with PVCs, which can be cured by RFCA. An ICE-guided electroanatomical approach should be considered to improve the safety and feasibility of this procedure.

Microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) process has become a focal point in treating municipal wastewater. However, it remains elusive whether the emerging process can be applied for the treatment of aquaculture wastewater, which contains considerable concentrations of nitrate and nitrite. This study evaluated the feasibility of MBGS process for aquaculture wastewater treatment. Result showed that the MBGS process was competent to remove respective 64.8%, 84.9%, 70.8%, 50.0% and 84.2% of chemical oxygen demand, ammonia-nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen, nitrite-nitrogen and phosphate-phosphorus under non-aerated conditions within 8 h. The dominant microalgae and bacteria were identified to be Coelastrella and Rhodobacteraceae, respectively. Further metagenomics analysis implied that microbial assimilation was the main contributor in organics, nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Specifically, considerable nitrate and nitrite removals were also obtained with the synergy between microalgae and bacteria. Consequently, this work demonstrated that the MBGS process showed a prospect of becoming an environmentally friendly and efficient alternative in aquaculture wastewater treatment.

The aerobic granular sludge (AGS) process and microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) process were comparably applied for municipal wastewater treatment in sequencing batch reactors with a height to diameter ratio of eight. For morphological appearances, the yellow aerobic granules were strip-shaped (4.0 mm × 0.62 mm) while the green microalgal-bacterial granules were elliptical-shaped (2.0 mm × 0.75 mm). The dominated rod-shaped bacteria (e.g., Acidobacteria and Bacteroidetes) and the slender configuration might be associated with the strip shape of aerobic granules under weak acid conditions. The nutrients removal performances by MBGS process were generally slightly better than AGS process. In addition, nutrients removal mechanisms were identified to elucidate how organics, ammonia, and phosphorus were removed by AGS process and MBGS process, respectively. Mass balance calculation estimated that MBGS process appeared to achieve much less CO2 emission (5.8%) compared with AGS process (44.4%). Overall, it proved that MBGS process, with the merits of potentially low energy cost, limited CO2 emission, and excellent performance, showed more prospects in municipal wastewater treatment than AGS process.

BACKGROUND: Colla Cornus Cervi (CCC) has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of osteoporosis and osteonecrosis of the femoral head. However, the bioavailability of CCC is seriously limited owing to its large molecular weight and complex ingredients. In the present study, antler polypeptide was separated from CCC, and the effects of antler polypeptide on rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) were investigated. METHODS: Antler polypeptide was separated from Colla Cornus Cervi by ultrafiltration into different samples according to the molecular weight. The total peptide content of these samples was determined by the biuret method. The content of antler polypeptide in different samples was quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The effects of antler polypeptide at different concentrations on the proliferation, cell cycle, alkaline phosphatase activity, and BMP7 expression of BMSCs were investigated. RESULTS: Antler polypeptide was separated by ultrafiltration into different samples: A (molecular weight <800 Da), B (molecular weight 800-1500 Da), and C (molecular weight >1500 Da). The total peptide contents of A, B, and C were 0.602 mg/mL, 8.976 mg/mL, and 38.88 mg/mL. Antler polypeptide B eluted at 14.279∼15.351 min showed that the content of antler polypeptide was significantly higher than that of A and C with a peak area of 933.80927. The BMSCs proliferation rate (84.66%) of polypeptide B was the highest at the concentration of 1.578 × 10-2 g/mL. Antler polypeptide B significantly promoted the proliferation of BMSCs with a proliferation index of 38.68%, which was significantly higher than that of the other groups. Antler polypeptide B significantly enhanced the activity of alkaline phosphatase in BMSCs compared to that of the blank group (P < 0.001). Antler polypeptide B increased the BMP7 protein expression in BMSCs. CONCLUSIONS: Results suggested that antler polypeptide may promote the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. Our study lays an experimental foundation for the further development and application of antler polypeptide in medicine.

BACKGROUND: Increased meningitis caused by extensively drug-resistant bacillary presents a significant challenge in antibiotic selection. The aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of polymyxin in the treatment of post-neurosurgical meningitis due to the extensively drug-resistant bacillary in children. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study on post-neurosurgical meningitis caused by the extensively drug-resistant bacillary in children, who were treated with polymyxin for ≥ 3 days. RESULTS: Among five post-neurosurgical meningitis cases that were included, the children were infected by Acinetobacter baumannii (n = 3), Klebsiella pneumonia (n = 1), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n = 1). The drug susceptibility test showed that they were extensively drug-resistant bacillary. Two patients received intravenous polymyxin E. Three children received intravenous combined with intraventricular injection of polymyxin B. One patient infected by Klebsiella pneumonia eventually died of septic shock. No serious adverse effects of polymyxin were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Polymyxin is a safe and effective therapy for post-neurosurgical, multidrug-resistant bacillary meningitis in children.

BACKGROUND: Aphid (Macrosiphoniella sanbourni) stress drastically influences the yield and quality of chrysanthemum, and grafting has been widely used to improve tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the effect of grafting on the resistance of chrysanthemum to aphids remains unclear. Therefore, we used the RNA-Seq platform to perform a de novo transcriptome assembly to analyze the self-rooted grafted chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium T. 'Hangbaiju') and the grafted Artermisia-chrysanthemum (grafted onto Artemisia scoparia W.) transcription response to aphid stress. RESULTS: The results showed that there were 1337 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), among which 680 were upregulated and 667 were downregulated, in the grafted Artemisia-chrysanthemum compared to the self-rooted grafted chrysanthemum. These genes were mainly involved in sucrose metabolism, the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, the plant hormone signaling pathway and the plant-to-pathogen pathway. KEGG and GO enrichment analyses revealed the coordinated upregulation of these genes from numerous functional categories related to aphid stress responses. In addition, we determined the physiological indicators of chrysanthemum under aphid stress, and the results were consistent with the molecular sequencing results. All evidence indicated that grafting chrysanthemum onto A. scoparia W. upregulated aphid stress responses in chrysanthemum. CONCLUSION: In summary, our study presents a genome-wide transcript profile of the self-rooted grafted chrysanthemum and the grafted Artemisia-chrysanthemum and provides insights into the molecular mechanisms of C. morifolium T. in response to aphid infestation. These data will contribute to further studies of aphid tolerance and the exploration of new candidate genes for chrysanthemum molecular breeding.

OBJECTIVES: Panax ginseng, a well-known traditional Chinese medicine with multiple pharmacological activities, plays a crucial role in modulating mood disorders. Several recent studies have identified an underlying role of Panax ginseng in the prevention and treatment of depression. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms remain unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this review, we summarized the recent progress of antidepressant effects and underlying mechanisms of Panax ginseng and its representative herbal formulae. RESULTS: The molecular and cellular mechanisms of Panax ginseng and its herbal formulae include modulating monoamine neurotransmitter system, upregulating the expression of neurotrophic factors, regulating the function of HPA axis, and anti-inflammatory action. CONCLUSIONS: Therefore, this review may provide theoretical bases and clinical applications for the treatment of depression by Panax ginseng and its representative herbal formulae.

Pharmacological antiarrhythmic therapy such as beta-blockers in patients with frequent premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) and concomitant bradycardia is challenging. A traditional Chinese medicine, Shensong Yangxin (SSYX), has been effective in treatment of frequent PVCs and sinus bradycardia (SB) in separate patient cohorts. This double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre, randomized clinical trial investigates the acute efficacy of SSYX in reducing PVCs burden in patients with concomitant SB. Patients with symptomatic, frequent PVCs, and SB, defined as mean heart rate (MHR) of 45 to 59 beats per min (bpm), were recruited at 33 medical centres in mainland China and randomly assigned by computer to either SSYX or matching placebo for eight weeks. Patients, investigators, and trial personnel were masked to treatment allocation. Primary endpoints were changes in PVCs burden and MHR as assessed by 24-hour Holter monitoring relative to baseline. Secondary efficacy endpoints were subjective symptom score, ECG, and biochemical parameters. Analysis was based on intention-to-treat principles. 333 patients were randomized, of which 166 received SSYX and 167 placebo. Baseline characteristics did not differ. SSYX reduced PVCs burden by 68.2% (p < 0.001) and increased MHR by 10.9% (p < 0.001) compared to 32.2% and 4.7%, respectively, in the placebo group. SSYX group experienced greater symptomatic improvement (p < 0.001). No differences in reported adverse events were seen (20 versus 23). SSYX is an effective antiarrhythmic therapy for symptomatic, frequent PVCs uniquely suited patients with concomitant SB. Clinical trial number was NCT01750775.

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a common joint disease and a major cause of morbidity. OBJECTIVE: In this study Cervi cornus Colla (CCC) deproteinized bone scaffolds were designed and three dimensional (3D)-printed for the repair of ONFH in rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The CCC-deproteinized bone scaffolds were 3D-printed using polycaprolactone mixed with the CCC-deproteinized bone powder. The scaffolds were viewed under a scanning electron microscope and subjected to compression analysis. Osteoblasts were isolated from rats and coated onto the scaffolds. Cell proliferation assays were performed with the MTT (3­[4,5-dimethylthiazole­2]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) kit from Promega. An ONFH was induced in rats and a CCC-deproteinized bone scaffold was implanted into the necrotic femoral head. General observations, X­ray imaging, and pathological examination of the femoral head were performed to evaluate the treatment of ONFH in the rats. RESULTS: The scaffolds were porous with a mean pore diameter of 315.70 ± 41.52 nm and a porosity of 72.86 ± 5.45% and exhibited favorable mechanical properties and degradation. In vitro assays showed that osteoblasts accumulated in the pores and adhered to the scaffolds. The CCC-deproteinized bone scaffolds enhanced the proliferation of osteoblasts. The in vivo experiments revealed that the general observation score of rats in the CCC-scaffold implanted group was significantly higher than that in the control group. The X­ray images showed significant alleviation of ONFH in the CCC-deproteinized bone scaffold implanted rats. The femoral heads of rats in the treatment group showed less destruction or ossification of cartilage cells, few bone cement lines, very little necrosis or irregularities on the cartilage surface and only a small amount of inflammatory cell infiltration in the medullary cavity. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that CCC-deproteinized bone scaffold implants facilitated the repair of ONFH in rats. This research provides a new therapeutic approach for the repair of early and mid-term ONFH.

Berberine, a natural isoquinoline alkaloid, is used in herbal medicine and has recently been shown to have efficacy in the treatment of mood disorders. Furthermore, berberine modulates neurotransmitters and their receptor systems within the central nervous system. However, the detailed mechanisms of its action remain unclear. This review summarizes the pharmacological effects of berberine on mood disorders. Therefore, it may be helpful for potential application in the treatment of mood disorders.
