Autophagy, a conserved degradation and reuse process, plays a crucial role in plant cellular homeostasis during abiotic stress. Although numerous autophagy-related genes (ATGs) that regulate abiotic stress have been identified, few functional studies have shown how they confer tolerance to copper (Cu) stress. Here, we cloned a novel Vitis vinifera ATG6 gene (VvATG6) which was induced by 0.5 and 10 mM Cu stress based on transcriptomic data, and transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana, tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), and grape calli were successfully obtained through Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation. The overexpression of VvATG6 enhanced the tolerance of transgenic lines to Cu. After Cu treatment, the lines that overexpressed VvATG6 grew better and increased their production of biomass compared with the wild-type. These changes were accompanied by higher activities of antioxidant enzymes and a lower accumulation of deleterious malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide in the transgenic plants. The activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase were enhanced owing to the elevation of corresponding antioxidant gene expression in the VvATG6 overexpression plants under Cu stress, thereby promoting the clearance of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Simultaneously, there was a decrease in the levels of expression of RbohB and RbohC that are involved in ROS synthesis in transgenic plants under Cu stress. Thus, the accelerated removal of ROS and the inhibition of its synthesis led to a balanced ROS homeostasis environment, which alleviated the damage from Cu. This could benefit from the upregulation of other ATGs that are necessary for the production of autophagosomes under Cu stress. To our knowledge, this study is the first to demonstrate the protective role of VvATG6 in the Cu tolerance of plants. Lignan, a beneficial constituent of Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) showed great interest in researchers because of its multiple functional properties. Nonetheless, a challenge arises due to the glycosidic structure of lignans, which the gut epithelium cannot readily absorb. Therefore, we screened 18 strains of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Lacticaseibacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, Pediococcus pentosaceus, Pediococcus acidilactici, and Enterococcus durans to remove glycosides from flaxseed lignan extract enzymatically. Among our findings, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum SCB0151 showed the highest activity of ß-glucosidase (8.91 ± 0.04 U/mL) and higher transformed efficiency of Secoisolariciresinol (SECO) (8.21 ± 0.13%). The conversion rate of Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) and the generation rate of SECO was 58.30 ± 3.78% and 32.13 ± 2.78%, respectively, under the optimized conditions. According to the LC-HRMSMS analysis, SECO (68.55 ± 6.57 µM), Ferulic acid (FA) (32.12 ± 2.50 µM), and Coumaric acid (CA) (79.60 ± 6.21 µM) were identified in the biotransformation products (TP) of flaxseed lignan extract. Results revealed that the TP exhibited a more pronounced anti-inflammatory effect than the flaxseed lignan extract. SECO, FA, and CA demonstrated a more inhibitory effect on NO than that of SDG. The expression of iNOS and COX-2 was significantly suppressed by TP treatment in LPS-induced Raw264.7 cells. The secretion of IL-6, IL-2, and IL-1ß decreased by 87.09 ± 0.99%, 45.40 ± 0.87%, and 53.18 ± 0.83%, respectively, at 60 µg/mL of TP treatment. Given these data, the bioavailability of flaxseed lignan extract and its anti-inflammatory effect were significantly enhanced by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum SCB0151, which provided a novel approach to commercializing flaxseed lignan extract for functional food.

Water kefir grains (WKGs), the starter used to develop a traditional beverage named water kefir, consist of a symbiotic mixture of probiotics with diverse bioactivities, but little is known about their abilities to remove mycotoxins that have serious adverse effects on humans and animals. This study investigated the ability of WKGs to remove aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), one of the most toxic mycotoxins, under different settings, and determined the mechanism of absorption mediated by WKGs and the effect of WKGs on the toxicity induced by AFB1 and the reduction in AFB1 in cow milk and tea soups. The results showed the WKGs used herein were dominated by Lactobacillus, Acetobacter, Phenylobacterium, Sediminibacterium, Saccharomyces, Issatchenkia, and Kodamaea. HPLC analysis demonstrated that the WKGs effectively removed AFB1 at concentrations ranging from 1 to 5 µg/mL, pH values ranging from 3 to 9, and temperatures ranging from 4 to 45 °C. Additionally, the removal of AFB1 mainly depended on absorption, which was consistent with the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Moreover, only 49.63% of AFB1 was released from the AFB1-WKG complex after four washes when the release of AFB1 was non-detectable. Furthermore, WKG treatment caused a dramatic reduction in the mutagenicity induced by AFB1 according to an Ames test and reduced more than 54% of AFB1 in cow milk and three tea soups. These results suggested that WKGs can act as a potential bio-absorbent with a high binding ability to detoxify AFB1 in food and feed via a chemical action step and multi-binding sites of AFB1 absorption in a wide range of scenarios.

Shegan Mahuang Decoction has been used in clinical practice for thousands of years, and is a classical formula for treating asthma and other respiratory diseases, with the effects of ventilating lung, dispersing cold, and relieving cough and asthma. This paper summarized the history, clinical application and mechanism of Shegan Mahuang Decoction, and predicted its quality markers(Q-markers) based on the "five principles" of Q-markers. The results suggested that irisflorentin, tectoridin, tectorigenin, irigenin, ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, asarinin, methyleugenol, shionone, epifriedelanol, tussilagone, 6-gingerol, trigonelline, cavidine, schizandrin, and schizandrin B could be used as Q-markers of Shegan Mahuang Decoction, which provided a basis for the quality control and subsequent research and development of Shegan Mahuang Decoction.

(-)-Epigallocatechin (EGC) has good health benefits, but its chemical stability is low. Pectin hydrogels have potential for the encapsulation and delivery of EGC, but they are limited by porous networks and poor mechanical properties. In this study, protein (whey protein isolate and caseinate)-reinforced pectin hydrogel beads (HBPEC-WPI and HBPEC-CAS) were developed to overcome these limitations. The results showed that HBPEC-CAS was a superior delivery system for EGC. HBPEC-CAS had a compact network structure, mainly because of the hydrogen bonds that formed between caseinate and pectin. Moreover, the EGC encapsulation efficiency of HBPEC-CAS (2.4%) reached 92.23 %; HBPEC-CAS (2.4%) could also delay the release of EGC in an aqueous environment, while ensuring its sufficient release in a simulated gastrointestinal environment. Notably, EGC was chemically stabilized in HBPEC-CAS (2.4%) during a 6-day storage period at 37 °C through the inhibition of its epimerization, oxidation, dimerization, and trimerization. The numerous hydroxyl groups in EGC readily interacted with the exposed amino acid residues in caseinate and created more protective sites. This study developed a strategy for protein-reinforced pectin hydrogel development and approaches for the protection of tea polyphenols; the findings offer useful insights for the tea-based food and beverage industry.

This study investigated the therapeutic effect of Shegan Mahuang Decoction(SGMHD) on cold-induced asthma in rats and explored its underlying mechanism. Seventy-two healthy male SD rats of specific pathogen free(SPF) grade were randomly divided into a blank group, a model group, a positive control group(dexamethasone, 0.4 mg·kg~(-1)), and low-, medium-, and high-dose SGMHD groups(3.2, 6.4, and 12.8 g·kg~(-1)). The blank group received saline, while the other groups were sensitized by intraperitoneal injection of ovalbumin(OVA) solution. Subsequently, the rats were placed in a cold chamber adjustable to 0-2 ℃, and OVA solution was ultrasonically nebulized to induce cold-induced asthma in rats. After three weeks of treatment, the general behaviors of rats were observed. Hematoxylin-eosin(HE) staining was used to evaluate pathological changes in lung tissues, periodic acid-Schiff(PAS) staining assessed mucin changes, and Masson staining was performed to examine collagen deposition. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) was used to measure the levels of the inflammatory factors interleukin-4(IL-4) and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BALF). Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) was employed to assess the mRNA expression levels of transient receptor potential vanilloid subfamily member 1(TRPV1), nuclear respiratory factor 1(NRF-1), and mitochondrial transcription factor A(mtTFA) in lung tissues. Western blot was used to measure the protein expression levels of TRPV1, NRF-1, and mtTFA in lung tissues. Compared with the blank group, the model group exhibited signs of rapid respiration, increased frequency of defecation with looser stools, and disheveled and dull fur. Pathological results showed significant infiltration of inflammatory cells in lung tissues, narrowing of bronchial lumens, increased mucin secretion, and enhanced collagen deposition in the model group. Additionally, the levels of IL-4 and VEGF in serum and BALF were significantly elevated, and the mRNA and protein expression levels of TRPV1, NRF-1, and mtTFA in lung tissues were significantly increased. Compared with the model group, SGMHD improved the behaviors of rats, alleviated pathological changes in lung tissues, mucin production, and collagen deposition, significantly decreased the levels of IL-4 and VEGF in serum and BALF, and reduced the mRNA expression levels of TRPV1, NRF-1, and mtTFA in lung tissues, with the medium-dose SGMHD group showing the most significant effect. Moreover, the protein expression levels of TRPV1, NRF-1, and mtTFA in lung tissues were also reduced, with the medium-dose SGMHD group exhibiting the most significant effect. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that SGMHD can alleviate airway inflammation and inhibit airway remodeling in cold-induced asthma rats. These effects may be associated with the modulation of the TRPV1/NRF-1/mtTFA signaling pathway.

Forest productivity is generally limited by nutrient scarcity. This study aims to reveal seasonal interactions among leaf carbon (C), nitrogen (N) fractions and tree growth driven by nutrient addition in a subtropical forest. Here, a field nutrient addition experiment was conducted with six treatments, namely, +N5 (5 g N m-2 yr-1), +N10 (10 g N m-2 yr-1), +P5 (5 g P m-2 yr-1), +N5 + P5, +N10 + P5, and control (N0 + P0). C fractions (structural and non-structural carbohydrates) and N fractions (soluble N, nucleic N and protein N) in needles as well as tree growth indicated by basal area increment (BAI) were measured in growing and dormant seasons. Total N and protein N in old needles were significantly increased by P addition, while no significant differences of non-structural carbohydrates in young (<1-year old) and old needles (>1-year old) were detected among the treatments in both seasons. N and P addition increased the structural carbohydrates of old needles in dormant season. P addition decreased and increased tree growth in growing and dormant seasons, respectively. The variation of BAI was explained 18.3 % by total N and 17.8 % by protein N in growing season, and was explained 33.9 % by total N and 34.2 % by protein N in dormant season. Our study suggested that the P addition effect on Chinese fir growth mostly depends on needle N fractions. This study highlights tree seasonal growth driven by nutrient alteration might be characterized by leaf N fractions rather than C fractions in subtropical forests.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is an important cofactor in the process by which glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) converts the excitatory, pro-epileptogenic neurotransmitter, glutamate, into the inhibitory, anti-epileptogenic neurotransmitter, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). This concept has been established in infants with pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy as well as adult patients with other epilepsy subtypes who presented with medication-resistant status epilepticus, with both patient groups experiencing cessation of seizure activity following pyridoxine administration. Given our knowledge of the role of vitamin B6 in the conversion of glutamate to GABA, its effect on seizure control in infants with specific epilepsy subtypes, reports of adult-onset seizures associated with vitamin B6 deficiency, and vitamin B6's role in terminating status epilepticus in adult patients with other types of epilepsy, we suspect that low vitamin B6 levels in adult epilepsy patients may correlate with poor seizure control across all epilepsy subtypes. This study seeks to determine whether there is a relationship between pyridoxine levels and the level of seizure control in adults with epilepsy, regardless of their seizure type. METHODS: After obtaining institutional review board approval, we prospectively enrolled 32 patients (age range: 25-57 years) with epilepsy who presented to our clinic. Patients who did not meet the study criteria or who were diagnosed with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) were excluded from the study (n = 2). Patients were classified as well-controlled (WC) or poorly controlled (PC) based on the absence or presence of a seizure within the last three months, respectively. After classification as WC or PC, pyridoxine serum levels and anti-seizure medication (ASM) levels were drawn in that clinic visit, following patient consent. All patients were contacted regarding pyridoxine and serum ASM levels, and patients that were found to be deficient in pyridoxine were treated with appropriate supplementation. At the end of the recruitment period, we performed analyses to determine if there was a statistically significant relationship between PC status and serum pyridoxine levels. RESULTS: Of 32 patients, two patients were diagnosed with psychogenic non-epileptic events and were subsequently excluded. Of 30 patients, 10 had PC epilepsy. Median (interquartile range) serum B6 levels were 35.8 (26.8-54.2) in patients with WC epilepsy and 17.5 (10.1-41.3) in patients with PC epilepsy (P = 0.11). In the PC group, 6/10 (60%) of the patients demonstrated low serum pyridoxine compared to 3/20 (15%) in the WC group (P = 0.03). CONCLUSION: There was a statistically significant relationship between serum pyridoxine levels and seizure control. If appropriate, pyridoxine supplementation should be considered, especially in critically ill adult patients with refractory or PC seizures despite good adherence to ASMs.

The treatment of benign pelvic lesions and tumors is still a challenge in clinical orthopedics. The surgical procedure was complicated and the postoperative complication was hard to avoid usually. The purpose of this study is to analyze the clinical outcome and predict the fracture risk of benign bone tumors on acetabular dome by finite element analysis. In our research, clinical data of 25 patients were collected from January 2010 to January 2017, including basic information of patients, reconstruction methods, complications, and postoperative MSTS function scores. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to predict the fracture risk when a benign tumor involved an acetabular dome. 25 patients were followed up for 37.5 ± 5.6 (ranging from 24 to 78) months. Intraoperative bleeding was 100-3000 ml (mean 858.3 ml). The postoperative MSTS93 score was 19.61 ± 7.32 before operation and 26.28 ± 15.59 at the last follow-up. The results of finite element analysis suggest that there was a high risk for pathological fracture in the following: both columns were damaged by tumors; the anterior column and 50% of the posterior column were affected. Other cases were in the low fracture risk group. Based on this study, we believe that, according to the risk assessment results of tumor cavity fracture suggested by the FEA results, combined with the nature of tumor, it may become a useful tool which is a great significance to guide the operation plan, select the operation time, and guide the postoperative functional exercise.

Green tea polyphenols (GTP) play an important role in shaping the gut microbiome, comprising a range of densely colonizing microorganisms, including bacteriophages. Previous studies focused on the effect of GTP on the bacteria in the gut microbiota. However, little is known about the role of GTP in the bacteriophage composition of healthy intestines. In this study, SPF male C57BL/6J mice were divided into a polyphenol-free diet group and a tea polyphenol diet group where drinking water was supplemented with 0.1% GTP for 28 days. The ultra-deep metagenomic sequencing of virus-like particle preparations and bacterial 16S rRNA sequencing were performed on mouse stool samples. Changes in the gut bacteriome, bacteriophages, and bacterial-bacteriophage correlations were then compared between the groups. The results revealed an abundance of Firmicutes, a significant decrease in Bacteroidetes, and a significant increase in the ratio of F/B after GTP exposure. The GTP altered the abundance (relative abundance > 1.00%) of Bifidobacterium (regulation rate of 89.78% and the abundance up-regulated by 0.89%) and Akkermansia (regulation rate of 99.70% and the abundance down-regulated by 1.77%). The abundance of Faecalibaculum (regulation rate of 60.17%) increased by 24.38% following GTP treatment. The GTP also altered the abundance of Salmonella phage (regulation rate of 98.64% and the abundance up-regulated by 3.16%) and that of Gordonia_phage_Yakult (regulation rate of 99.99% and the abundance down-regulated by 5.44%). It significantly increased the intestine's lytic phages and reduced the temperate phages by 29.22%. The dominant microorganisms (relative abundance >1.00%) of Bifidobacterium and Dubosiella had a significantly negative relationship with the Faecalibacterium phage and a significantly positive relationship with the Lactobacillus prophage. Exposure to GTP positively promoted changes in the gut bacteriophage community and interaction network in the microbial community of the SPF mice. These findings highlight the importance of "profitable" bacteriophage-bacteria relationships and reveal a potential mechanism of GTP towards the regulation of intestinal flora via intestinal phage communities.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the bidirectional regulation of acupuncture based on a subgroup analysis of multicenter randomized controlled trial of acupuncture with Tiaoshen Jianpi for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). METHODS: A total of 519 patients were included in the analysis, including 137 patients with constipation type irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C) (92 cases in the acupuncture group and 45 cases in the polyethylene glycol [PEG] group), and 382 patients with diarrhea type irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) (252 cases in the acupuncture group and 130 cases in the pinaverium group). The patients in the acupuncture group were given acupuncture at Baihui (GV 20), Yintang (GV 29), Tianshu (ST 25), Shangjuxu (ST 37), Zusanli (ST 36), Sanyinjiao (SP 6) and Taichong (LR 3) once every other day, 3 times a week. The patients in the PEG group received polyethylene glycol 4000 powder orally, and the pinaverium group received pinaverium bromide tablets orally. All were treated for 6 weeks. The IBS symptom severity score (IBS-SSS) was assessed at baseline, treatment period (2, 4, 6 weeks of treatment) and 12 weeks of follow-up, and the IBS quality of life (IBS-QOL) score was evaluated at the baseline period, 6 weeks of treatment and 12 weeks of follow-up. RESULTS: The total IBS-SSS scores of the two groups of IBS-C patients at 2, 4, 6 weeks of treatment and follow-up of 12 weeks were lower than those in the baseline period (P<0.01). The total IBS-SSS score in the IBS-C acupuncture group was lower than that in the PEG group at 12 weeks of follow-up (P<0.05). The total IBS-SSS scores of the two groups of IBS-D patients at 2, 4, 6 weeks of treatment and 12 weeks of follow-up were lower than those in the baseline period (P<0.01). The total IBS-SSS scores in the IBS-D acupuncture group were lower than those in the pinaverium group at 2, 4, 6 weeks of treatment and 12 weeks of follow-up (P<0.05). The total IBS-QOL scores at 6 weeks of treatment and 12 weeks of follow-up were higher than those in the baseline period in both groups of patients with IBS-C (P<0.01). The total IBS-QOL scores at 6 weeks of treatment and 12 weeks of follow-up were higher than those in the baseline period in both groups in patients with IBS-D (P<0.01). The total IBS-QOL score in the IBS-D acupuncture group was higher than that in the pinaverium group at 18 weeks of follow-up (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture with Tiaoshen Jianpi can improve the clinical symptoms and quality of life of patients with IBS-C and IBS-D, which can regulate different functional states (constipation and diarrhea) of the same disease (irritable bowel syndrome), reflecting the bidirectional regulation of acupuncture.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the curative effect on diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) between acupuncture for regulating shen and strengthening spleen and pinaverium bromide, and explore the relevant mechanism of curative effect of acupuncture in view of polymorphism of 5-hydroxytryptamine transporter gene-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR). METHODS: A total of 231 patients with IBS-D were randomized into an acupuncture group (154 cases) and a western medication group (77 cases) at the ratio of 2 to 1. In the acupuncture group, acupuncture was applied to acupoint regimen for regulating shen and strengthening spleen, i.e. Baihui (GV 20), Yintang (GV 29), Tianshu (ST 25), Shangjuxu (ST 37) and Zusanli (ST 36), etc. The treatment was given once every 2 days, 3 times a week. In the western medication group, pinaverium bromide was prescribed for oral administration, 50 mg each time, 3 times daily. The duration of treatment was 6 weeks in each group. Separately, before treatment, after treatment and in 3-month follow-up, the IBS symptom severity scale (IBS-SSS) and IBS quality of life scale (IBS-QOL) scores were adopted in assessment. After treatment, the curative effect and safety were compared between the two groups. Before treatment, 5-HTTLPR genotypes were determined in the patients. RESULTS: After treatment and in follow-up, the total scores of IBS-SSS in the patients of the two groups were all reduced as compared with those before treatment (P<0.01) and the scores in the acupuncture group were lower than those in the western medication group (P<0.01). After treatment and in follow-up, the total scores of IBS-QOL in the two groups were all increased as compared with those before treatment (P<0.01) and the score in the acupuncture group was higher than the western medication group in follow-up (P<0.01). The total effective rate was 79.2% (122/154) in the acupuncture group, higher than 58.4% (45/77) in the western medication group (P<0.01). There was no severe adverse reaction found in the two groups. The difference in the total score of IBS-SSS before and after treatment in the patients with LS and SS genotypes was greater than that in the patients with LL in the acupuncture group (P<0.01). The difference in the total score of ISB-SSS before and after treatment in the patients with SS genotype was greater than that in the patients with LL in the western medication group (P<0.01). The difference in the total score of IBS-SSS before and after treatment in the patients with LS and SS genotypes in the acupuncture group was greater than that in the patients with the same genotypes in the western medication group (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture for regulating shen and strengthening spleen achieves the more curative effect on IBS-D as compared with pinaverium bromide. The acupuncture regimen effectively relieves the clinical symptoms and improves the quality of life in patients as well as presents a satisfactory long-term effect and safety. The clinical curative effect of acupuncture is correlated with 5-HTTLPR polymorphism, in which, the curative effect of acupuncture may be more effective in the patients with LS and SS genotypes.

Chronic mercury poisoning from cosmetics is often misdiagnosed and mistreated due to atypical clinical presentations and high industrial standards and quality control of cosmetic products. Here we present a case of a 45-year-old female with a four-month history of progressive weakness, atrophy, insomnia, mood swings, chorea-like movement, extremity pain and hyperalgesia. The routine workup for neuropathy and myopathy such as CK, EMG were unremarkable. However heavy metal screen revealed significantly elevated mercury levels. Afterwards, we found it was caused by daily-use whitening cosmetics through the hair segmented toxicant analysis to trace the dynamics changing of mercury concentration in the body. After the removal of the patient from the source of exposure, and chelation therapy, her symptoms had gradually improved. When patients have unexplained behavioral changes, cognitive decline, sleep disturbance, fatigue, pain, and other unspecific manifestations, the possibility of mercury poisoning should be considered, blood mercury and urine mercury should be detected, and the source of exposure should be investigated and timely treatment should be given.

Microbial degradation is an effective and attractive method for eliminating aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), which is severely toxic to humans and animals. In this study, Aspergillus niger RAF106 could effectively degrade AFB1 when cultivated in Sabouraud dextrose broth (SDB) with contents of AFB1 ranging from 0.1 to 4 µg/mL. Treatment with yeast extract as a nitrogen source stimulated the degradation, but treatment with NaNO3 and NaNO2 as nitrogen sources and lactose and sucrose as carbon sources suppressed the degradation. Moreover, A. niger RAF106 still degraded AFB1 at initial pH values that ranged from 4 to 10 and at cultivation temperatures that ranged from 25 to 45 °C. In addition, intracellular enzymes or proteins with excellent thermotolerance were verified as being able to degrade AFB1 into metabolites with low or no mutagenicity. Furthermore, genomic sequence analysis indicated that the fungus was considered to be safe owing to the absence of virulence genes and the gene clusters for the synthesis of mycotoxins. These results indicate that A. niger RAF106 and its intracellular enzymes or proteins have a promising potential to be applied commercially in the processing and industry of food and feed to detoxify AFB1.

Critical care medicine is a medical specialty engaging the diagnosis and treatment of critically ill patients who have or are likely to have life-threatening organ failure. Sepsis, a life-threatening condition that arises when the body responds to infection, is currently the major cause of death in intensive care units (ICU). Although progress has been made in understanding the pathophysiology of sepsis, many drawbacks in sepsis treatment remains unresolved. For example, antimicrobial resistance, controversial of glucocorticoids use, prolonged duration of ICU care and the subsequent high cost of the treatment. Recent years have witnessed a growing trend of applying traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in sepsis management. The TCM application emphasizes use of herbal formulation to balance immune responses to infection, which include clearing heat and toxin, promoting blood circulation and removing its stasis, enhancing gastrointestinal function, and strengthening body resistance. In this paper, we will provide an overview of the current status of Chinese herbal formulations, single herbs, and isolated compounds, as an add-on therapy to the standard Western treatment in the sepsis management. With the current trajectory of worldwide pandemic eruption of newly identified Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19), the adjuvant TCM therapy can be used in the ICU to treat critically ill patients infected with the novel coronavirus.

Phosphate-solubilizing fungi (PSF) generally enhance available phosphorus (P) released from soil, which contributes to plants' P requirement, especially in P-limiting regions. In this study, two PSF, TalA-JX04 and AspN-JX16, were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) widely distributed in P-deficient areas in China and identified as Talaromyces aurantiacus and Aspergillus neoniger, respectively. The two PSF were cultured in potato dextrose liquid medium with six types of initial pH values ranging from 6.5 to 1.5 to assess acid resistance. Both PSF were incubated in Pikovskaya's liquid media with different pH values containing five recalcitrant P sources, including Ca3(PO4)2, FePO4, CaHPO4, AlPO4, and C6H6Ca6O24P6, to estimate their P-solubilizing capacity. No significant differences were found in the biomass of both fungi grown in media with different initial pH, indicating that these fungi could grow well under acid stress. The P-solubilizing capacity of TalA-JX04 was highest in medium containing CaHPO4, followed by Ca3(PO4)2, FePO4, C6H6Ca6O24P6, and AlPO4 in six types of initial pH treatments, while the recalcitrant P-solubilizing capacity of AspN-JX16 varied with initial pH. Meanwhile, the P-solubilizing capacity of AspN-JX16 was much higher than TalA-JX04. The pH of fermentation broth was negatively correlated with P-solubilizing capacity (p<0.01), suggesting that the fungi promote the dissolution of P sources by secreting organic acids. Our results showed that TalA-JX04 and AspN-JX16 could survive in acidic environments and both fungi had a considerable ability to release soluble P by decomposing recalcitrant P-bearing compounds. The two fungi had potential for application as environment-friendly biofertilizers in subtropical bamboo ecosystem.

BACKGROUND: Laser therapy is reported to be clinically effective for improving microcirculation, rheological properties and blood lipid profiles despite the lack of certainty on the mechanism. OBJECTIVE: This study intends to provide methods to drop blood lipid level of hyperlipidemia samples by low-intensity laser irradiation therapy and provide reasoning of mechanism. METHODS: Twenty whole blood samples of high level of lipids profile are irradiated by 405 nm low-intensity laser at 12 J/cm2 twice a day for 3 days and compared with normal lipids profile group. Then whole blood sample are centrifuged to obtain result of erythrocyte for further interpretation. Multi-scan spectrum microplate reader is used to measure absorption spectrum and data is analyzed by software SPSS 14.0. RESULTS: Results show that after 405 nm low-intensity laser irradiation, whole blood samples of high lipid level statistically have higher absorbance peak value than normal samples while erythrocyte samples have lower absorbance peak value. CONCLUSIONS: From the divergence of absorption peak value change after low-intensity laser irradiation for whole blood sample and erythrocyte, we suspect that low level laser irradiation affects the enzymes activity of lipid metabolism, improves the cholesterol balance of plasma and cytoplasm in erythrocyte, and decreases aggregation of the erythrocyte.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported that mindfulness meditation has a potential effect in controlling headaches, such as migraine and tension-type headache; however, its role remains controversial. This review assessed the evidence regarding the effects of mindfulness meditation for primary headache pain. METHODS: Only English databases (PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials [the Cochrane Library], PsycINFO, Psychology and behavioral science collection, PsyArticles, Web of Science, and Scopus) were searched from their inception to November 2016 with the keywords ("meditation" or "mindfulness" or "vipassana" or "dzogchen" or "zen" or "integrative body-mind training" or "IBMT" or "mindfulness-based stress reduction" or "MBSR" or "mindfulness-based cognitive therapy" or "MBCT" and "Headache" or "Head pain" or "Cephalodynia" or "Cephalalgia" or "Hemicrania" or "Migraine"). Titles, abstracts, and full-text articles were screened against study inclusion criteria: controlled trials of structured meditation programs for adult patients with primary headache pain. The quality of studies included in the meta-analysis was assessed with the Yates Quality Rating Scale. The meta-analysis was conducted with Revman 5.3. RESULTS: Ten randomized controlled trials and one controlled clinical trial with a combined study population of 315 patients were included in the study. When compared to control group data, mindfulness meditation induced significant improvement in pain intensity (standardized mean difference, -0.89; 95% confidence interval, -1.63 to -0.15; P = 0.02) and headache frequency (-0.67; -1.24 to -0.10; P = 0.02). In a subgroup analysis of different meditation forms, mindfulness-based stress reduction displayed a significant positive influence on pain intensity (P < 0.000). Moreover, 8-week intervention had a significant positive effect (P < 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: Mindfulness meditation may reduce pain intensity and is a promising treatment option for patients. Clinicians may consider mindfulness meditation as a viable complementary and alternative medical option for primary headache.

There is an increasing interest in the effect of dietary polyphenols on the intestinal microbiota and the possible associations between this effect and the development of obesity. However, limited information is available on how these polyphenols affect the gut microbiota and lipid metabolism. The co-action of a high-fat diet (HFD) and tea polyphenol (TP) on gut microbiota and lipid metabolism using a human flora-associated (HFA) C57BL/6J mice model is studied. TP reduced serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein, glucose (GLU) and insulin (INS) levels of HFD mice in a dose-dependent manner (P < 0.01). TP also significantly increased acetic acid and butyric acid levels in HFA mice. 16S rRNA V3 region Polymerase Chain Reaction-Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) profiles showed that HFD mice had significantly reduced microbial diversity. This reduction could be alleviated by TP, with a significant increase in the richness and diversity of colonic microbiota in the high-fat diet with 0.2% TP (TPM) and high-fat diet with 0.05% TP (TPL) groups (P < 0.05). 454 pyrosequencing analysis showed that the HFD group had a significant increase in the Bacteroidetes to Firmicutes (F/B) ratio (P < 0.001), which could effectively be reversed by TP. The results showed that the changes in composition and diversity of colonic microbiota by TP administration suppressed the host body weight and blood lipid increase in high-fat diet HFA mice. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: A high fat diet significantly impacted gut microbiota composition and lipid metabolism in human flora-associated mice, which were largely ameliorated by tea polyphenol (TP). Therefore, TPs may be effectively used in controlling or treating obesity, hyperlipidemia and other related metabolic diseases.

Objective: To study the chemical constituents from the medicinal herb of Caesalpinia decapetala. Methods: Silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography techniques were used as pretreatments for ethanol extract of the seeds of C. decapetala, and then semi-preparative HPLC technique was used. Results: Eight cassane diterpenes were isolated from the chloroform extract of C. decapetala. According to NMR, ESI-MS, and CD spectrum data, they were identified as 1α,6α,7β-triacetoxy-14α-methoxy- vouacapen-5α-ol (1), caesalmin F (2), neocaaesalpin MP (3), 1-deacteoxy-1-oxocaesalmin C (4), neocaesalpin AA (5), bonducellpin C (6), bonducellpin E (7), and neocaaesalpin N (8). Conclusion: Compound 1 is a new compound and named as caediterpene A, compound 1-2 are a pair of epimeric diterpenes, and compounds 3-7 are obtained for the first time from the seeds of C. decapetala.
