RESUMEN

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Psoraleae Fructus (PF), the dried fruit of Psoralea corylifolia L., is a commonly used traditional medicine that has contributed to the treatment of orthopedic diseases for thousands of years in China. However, recent PF-related liver injury reports have drawn widespread attention regarding its potential hepatotoxicity risks. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study was aimed to evaluate the long-term efficacy and chronic toxicity of PF using a 26-week administration experiment on rats in order to simulate the clinical usage situation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PF aqueous extract was consecutively administrated to rats daily at dosages of 0.7, 2.0, and 5.6 g/kg (equivalent to 1-8 times the clinical doses for humans) for as long as 26 weeks. Samples were collected after 13, 26, and 32 weeks (withdrawal for 6 weeks) since the first administration. The chronic toxicity of PF was evaluated by conventional toxicological methods, and the efficacy of PF was evaluated by osteogenic effects in the natural growth process. RESULTS: In our experiments, only the H group (5.6 g/kg) for 26-week PF treatment demonstrated liver or kidney injury, which the injuries were reversible after 6 weeks of withdrawal. Notably, the PF treatment beyond 13 weeks showed significant benefits for bone growth and development in rats, with a higher benefit-risk ratio in female rats. CONCLUSIONS: PF displayed a promising benefit-risk ratio in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, a disease that lacks effective medicine so far. This is the first study to elucidate the benefit-risk balance associated with clinical dosage and long-term use of PF, thereby providing valuable insights for rational clinical use and risk control of PF.

OBJECTIVES: To observe the effects of electroacupuncture(EA) on memory, cognitive impairment, and the brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF)/N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subtype 1(NMDAR1) pathway in the brains of offspring rat with intrauterine growth restriction(IUGR) induced by perinatal nicotine exposure(PNE), so as to explore the underlying mechanism. METHODS: SD rats were randomly divided into normal, model, and EA groups, with 4 mothers and 10 offspring rats of each mother in each group. The IUGR model was established by subcutaneous injection of nicotine during pregnancy and lactation. From the 6th day of pregnancy in the mothers until the 21st day after birth of the offspring rats, EA (2 Hz/15 Hz, 1 mA) was administered bilaterally at the "Zusanli"(ST36) of mothers, once daily for 20 min. The brain organ coefficient was used to evaluate the brain development of the offspring rats. The Y-maze test and novel object recognition experiments were performed to assess memory and cognitive function. HE staining was used to observe the development and cellular morphology of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex in the offspring rats. UV spectrophotometry was used to measure the glutamate(Glu) content in the hippocampus. ELISA was used to detect the BDNF content in the hippocampus. Western blot was performed to measure the protein expression of NMDAR1 in the hippocampus. Immunohistochemistry was used to count the number of BDNF-positive cells in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. RESULTS: Compared with the normal group, the brain organ coefficient, exploration time of the novel arm, spontaneous alternation rate, and novel object recognition index, contents of BDNF and expression of NMDAR1 proteins in the hippocampus, the number of BDNF-positive cells in the CA1 and CA3 regions of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex were significantly reduced(P<0.01), while the Glu content in the hippocampus was significantly increased(P<0.01) in the model group of offspring rats;decreased cell number, scattered arrangement, and disrupted cellular structure were observed in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of offspring rats in the model group. Compared with the model group, the brain organ coefficient, exploration time of the novel arm, spontaneous alternation rate, and novel object recognition index, the BDNF contents and NMDAR1 protein expression in the hippocampus, the number of BDNF-positive cells in the hippocampal CA1 and CA3 regions and prefrontal cortex significantly increased(P<0.01, P<0.05), while the Glu content in the hippocampus was significantly decreased (P<0.01) in offspring rats of the EA group;increased cell number, neat arrangement, and reduced cellular damage were observed in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex in the EA group. CONCLUSIONS: EA has an improving effect on memory and cognitive function impairment in offspring rats with IUGR induced by PNE, and this mechanism may be associated with the regulation of BDNF/NMDAR1 pathway, thereby improving the neuronal quantity and structure of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex in offspring rats.

OBJECTIVE: Many factors during pregnancy can induce intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), resulting in various adverse perinatal outcomes such as low birth weight and multiple organ disorders. Among these factors, prenatal smoke/nicotine exposure is a common cause of IUGR, often associated with altered fetal lung development. The classical Wnt signaling pathway plays a vital role in lung development, and its alterations are commonly associated with developmental lung pathologies. The purpose of this study was to determine whether electroacupuncture (EA) at "Zusanli" (ST 36) points protects perinatal nicotine exposure (PNE)-induced offspring lung dysplasia through Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway and to identify specific Wnt signaling pathway targets of EA. METHODS: Following a well-established protocol, nicotine (1 mg/kg/ body weight) was administered subcutaneously to pregnant Sprague Dawley rat dams from gestational day 6 to postnatal day 21. In the EA group, dams were treated with EA at both ST 36 acupoints, while in another experimental group, Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway agonist was injected subcutaneously (2 mg/kg/ body weight). Offspring body weight (PND 1, 7, 14, and 21), lung weight, Wnt signaling markers, pulmonary function, and lung morphology were determined at sacrifice on PND 21. Specifically, Western blotting and Real-time PCR were used to detect the protein and mRNA levels of critical Wnt signaling markers Wnt2, Wnt7b, FZD4, FZD7, LRP5, and LRP6 in the offspring lung. The protein levels of ß-catenin in lung tissue of offspring rats were detected by ELISA that of LEF-1 by Western blotting. RESULTS: Compared to the control group, the body and lung weights of the offspring rats were significantly decreased in the nicotine-only exposed group. The pulmonary function determined as FVC, PEF, TV, and Cdyn was also significantly decreased, while PIF was significantly increased. The protein levels and mRNA expression of Wnt2, Wnt7b, FZD4, FZD7, LRP5, and LRP6 in the lung tissue of the PNE offspring rats were significantly increased. With EA administration at ST 36 acupoints concomitant with nicotine administration, the body and lung weights, pulmonary function (FVC, PEF, PIF, TV, and Cdyn), protein and mRNA levels Wnt signaling pathway markers (Wnt2, Wnt7b, FZD4, FZD7, LRP5, LRP6, ß-catenin, and LEF-1) normalized and were not different from the control group. Notably, Wnt agonists agonist administration blocked the protective effects of EA against PNE-induced lung morphological, molecular, and function changes, highlighting the central significance of Wnt pathway signaling in PNE-induced offspring pulmonary pathology and its modulation by EA at ST 36 acupoints. CONCLUSION: Concomitant maternal EA at ST 36 acupoints from gestational day 6 to PND 21 protects against offspring PNE-induced lung phenotype. The protective effect is achieved by regulating the expression of Wnt ligand proteins (Wnt2 and Wnt7b) and receptor proteins (FZD4, FZD7, LRP5, and LRP6) upstream of the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway intermediates ß-catenin, and LEF-1.

Purpose: Local acupuncture has been found to have a good analgesic effect in rats with cervical spondylosis radiculopathy (CSR), but it lacks a regulatory effect on traditional Chinese medicine syndrome types of CSR. We proposed "Invigorating Qi and activating Blood" (IQAB) acupuncture, compared with Fenbid, and local electroacupuncture (LEA), to observe whether it has advantages in the protection of the CSR rat model and to elucidate its mechanism through the MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) signaling pathway. Materials and Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into six groups: control, sham, model, Fenbid, LEA, and IQAB. The CSR model was induced by inserting nylon sutures to compress the C4-T1 nerve root. The Fenbid group was treated with ibuprofen sustained-release capsules (15 mg/kg·d, ig). The LEA group received electroacupuncture at both C5 and C7 EX-B2 once a day. The IQAB group received acupuncture at both ST36 and BL17 based on the LEA group's intervention. Mechanical allodynia and gait, morphological changes in the spinal cord, IL-6 and TNF-α levels, MAPKs phosphorylation ratio, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) levels in the spinal cord, and the expression of p-p38 in the spinal cord and its colocalization with neurons and glial cell activation markers were detected. Results: Mechanical allodynia, gait disorder, edema, reduced Nissl-positive cell numbers, and increased IL-6 and TNF-α levels in the spinal cord were observed in CSR rats. IQAB significantly alleviated these changes, and the effects were generally comparable to those of Fenbid. Meanwhile, the phosphorylation ratios of p38 and extracellular regulated protein kinase (ERK), co-expression of p-p38 with neuron/microglia, and MCP-1 levels in the spinal cord were markedly down-regulated by IQAB compared with those in CSR model rats. Conclusion: IQAB reduced p38-activation-related microglia activation and MCP-1 levels, thus alleviating pathological changes, inflammation levels in the local spinal cord, and pain behavior of CSR.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of microsurgical vasoepididymostomy (MVE) for treating epididymal obstructive azoospermia (EOA) with different intussusception techniques. We conducted a comprehensive literature search using PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, retained literature related to obstructive azoospermia or male infertility and vasoepididymostomy, proactively reviewed other relevant literature, supplemented valuable references, and excluded studies that did not use intussusception and where valuable statistical data were difficult to obtain. Event rate and risk ratio (RR) were estimated. Patency rates were investigated. The influence of motile sperms found in the epididymal fluid, anastomotic sides and sites on patency was evaluated. 273 articles were comprised in this analysis, and 25 observational studies were eventually included, with a total patient sample of 1400. The overall mean patency rate was 69.3% (95% confidence interval [CI] 64.6-73.6%; I2 = 63.735%). We conducted a meta-analysis of the factors affecting patency after microsurgical IVE, finding that the presence of motile sperms in epididymal fluid (RR = 1.52; 95% CI 1.18-1.97%; P = 0.001), anastomosing bilaterally (RR = 1.32; 95% CI 1.15-1.50%; P < 0.0001) and distally (RR = 1.42; 95% CI 1.09-1.85%; P = 0.009) lead to higher patency rates. IVE is an effective treatment for EOA. The presence of motile sperms found in the epididymal fluid, anastomosing bilaterally and distally are significantly correlated with higher patency rates.

Dietary intake of selenium (Se)-enriched rice has benefit for avoiding Se-deficient disease, but there is a risk of excessive cadmium (Cd) intake. Through hydroponic culture and adsorption-desorption experiments, this paper focused on Se and Cd uptake in rice seedlings associated with the interactive effects of Se (Se4+ or Se6+), Cd, and iron (Fe) plaque. The formation of Fe plaque was promoted by Fe2+ and inhibited by Cd but not related with Se species. Shoot Se (Se4+ or Se6+) uptake was not affected by Fe plaque in most treatments, except that shoot Se concentrations were decreased by Fe plaque when Se4+ and Cd co-exposure. Shoot Cd concentrations were always inhibited by Fe plaque, regardless of Se species. Inhibiting Cd adsorption onto root surface (Se4+  + Cd) or increased Cd retention in Fe plaque (Se6+  + Cd) is an important mechanism for Fe plaque to reduce Cd uptake by rice. However, we found that DCB Cd concentrations (Cd adsorbed by Fe plaque) were not always positively correlated with Fe plaque amounts and always negatively correlated with the distribution ratios of Cd mass in root to that in Fe plaque (abbreviated as DRCMRF; r = - 0.942**); meanwhile, with the increase of DCB Fe concentration, the directions of variations of DCB Cd concentration and DRCMRF were affected by Se species. It indicated that the root system is also an important factor to affect DCB Cd concentration and inhibit Cd uptake, which is mediated by Se species. This paper provides a new understanding of Fe plaque-mediated interactive effect of Se and Cd uptakes in rice, which is beneficial for the remediation of Cd-contaminated and Cd-contaminated seleniferous areas.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of five-element music therapy of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) on the clinical symptoms and the quality of life in the patients with suboptimal health status (SHS) of liver stagnation and spleen deficiency and explore the corresponding specificity changes in the temperature of acupoints when zangfu functions are of dysfunction and recovered to be balanced, separately. METHODS: Sixty patients with SHS of liver stagnation and spleen deficiency were randomized into an observation group and a control group, 30 cases in each one. In the control group, the conventional health education was provided. In the observation group, on the base of the therapeutic regimen as the control group, the patients received the five-element music therapy to pacify the liver qi and strengthen the spleen functions, once every two days, 30 min each time, 3 treatments a week. The course of treatment consisted of 4 weeks. Before and after treatment, the TCM syndrome score and the MOS 36-item short form healthy survey (SF-36) score were compared between the two groups and the clinical therapeutic effect was evaluated. Using infrared thermal imaging, the temperature at the acupoints of the affected organs (liver, spleen), the related organs (gallbladder, stomach) and the other non-related zangfu organs (pericardium, lung) was detected before and after treatment in the two groups. RESULTS: After treatment, the TCM syndrome scores were reduced when compared with those before treatment in the two groups (P<0.01, P<0.05); the reduction in the observation group was larger than that of the control group (P<0.01). The score of each domain for the SF-36 in the observation group and the score of role-emotional domain in the control group were all increased when compared with the scores before treatment (P<0.01, P<0.05); and the score of each domain for the SF-36 in the observation group was higher than that in the control group (P<0.01). The total effective rate was 66.7% (20/30) in the observation group, which was higher than 10.0% in the control group (3/30, P<0.05). In the observation group, the temperature of the yuan-primary point, the back-shu point and the front-mu point related to the liver, as well as those related to the gallbladder after treatment was reduced when compared with the temperature before treatment; and the changes were larger than those of the control group (P<0.01). The temperature of the yuan-primary point, the back-shu point and the front-mu point related to the spleen, as well as the back-shu point and the front-mu point related to the stomach in the observation group was increased when compared with the temperature before treatment (P<0.01); and the changes were larger than those of the control group (P<0.01). For the temperature of the non-specific points related to the liver and spleen, as well as the yuan-primary point, the back-shu point and the front-mu point related to the pericardium and the lung, there was no significant differences when compared with the temperature at the above-mentioned acupoints before and after treatment (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: TCM five-element music therapy associated with the conventional health education may effectively relieve the clinical symptoms and improve the quality of life in the patients with suboptimal health status of liver stagnation and sleep deficiency; and the therapeutic effect is better than the simple health education. The changes in the temperature of acupoints may reflect the functional regulation of the related zangfu organs in the body.

BACKGROUND: Research into acupuncture and moxibustion and their application for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) has been growing, but the findings have been inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the existing randomized clinical trials (RCTs), compare the efficacy of acupuncture, moxibustion and other traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatments. DATA SOURCES: Three English-language databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and The Cochrane Library) and 4 Chinese-language biomedical databases (Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang) were searched for RCTs published from database inception through August 2021. STUDY SELECTION: RCTs include acupuncture, moxibustion, traditional Chinese herbal medicine, western medicine and no control. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS: Data were screened and extracted independently using predesigned forms. The quality of RCTs was appraised with the Cochrane Collaboration risk of bias tool. We conducted a random-effects network meta-analysis within a frequentist framework. We assessed the certainty of evidence contributing to network estimates of the main outcomes with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) framework. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The primary outcomes were the overall response rate and FS-14 scale. RESULTS: A total of 51 randomized controlled trials involving 3473 patients with CFS were included in this review. Forty one studies indicate low risk or unknown risk, and the GRADE scores of the combined results show low levels. Among the main indicators, traditional Chinese medicine therapies have excellent performance. However, the overall response rate is slightly different from the results obtained from the Fatigue Scale-14 total score. Moxibustion and traditional Chinese medicine (Odds ratios 48, 95% CrI 15-150) perform better in the total effective rate, while moxibustion plus acupuncture (MD 4.5, 95% CrI 3.0-5.9) is better in the FS-14 total score. CONCLUSIONS: The effect of acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of CFS was significantly higher than that of other treatments. Traditional Chinese medicine should be used more widely in the treatment of CFS.

BACKGROUND: Sediment is crucial for the unique marine angiosperm seagrass growth and successful restoration. Sediment modification induced by eutrophication also exacerbates seagrass decline and reduces plantation and transplantation survival rates. However, we lack information regarding the influence of sediment on seagrass photosynthesis and the metabolics, especially regarding the key secondary metabolic flavone. Meanwhile, sulfation of flavonoids in seagrass may mitigate sulfide intrusion, but limited evidence is available. RESULTS: We cultured the seagrass Thalassia hemprichii under controlled laboratory conditions in three sediment types by combining different ratios of in-situ eutrophic sediment and coarse beach sand. We examined the effects of beach sand mixed with natural eutrophic sediments on seagrass using photobiology, metabolomics and isotope labelling approaches. Seagrasses grown in eutrophic sediments mixed with beach sand exhibited significantly higher photosynthetic activity, with a larger relative maximum electron transport rate and minimum saturating irradiance. Simultaneously, considerably greater belowground amino acid and flavonoid concentrations were observed to counteract anoxic stress in eutrophic sediments without mixed beach sand. This led to more positive belowground stable sulfur isotope ratios in eutrophic sediments with a lower Eh. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicated that coarse beach sand indirectly enhanced photosynthesis in T. hemprichii by reducing sulfide intrusion with lower amino acid and flavonoid concentrations. This could explain why T. hemprichii often grows better on coarse sand substrates. Therefore, it is imperative to consider adding beach sand to sediments to improve the environmental conditions for seagrass and restore seagrass in eutrophic ecosystems.

Nucleic-acid-based immune adjuvants have been extensively investigated for the design of cancer vaccines. However, nucleic acids often require the assistance of a carrier system to improve cellular uptake. Yet, such systems are prone to carrier-associated adaptive immunity, leading to difficulties in a multidose treatment regimen. Here, we demonstrate that a spherical nucleic acid (SNA)-based self-adjuvanting system consisting of phosphodiester oligonucleotides and vitamin E can function as a potent anticancer vaccine without a carrier. The two functional modules work synergistically, serving as each other's delivery vector to enhance toll-like receptor 9 activation. The vaccine rapidly enters cells carrying OVA model antigens, which enables efficient activation of adaptive immunity in vitro and in vivo. In OVA-expressing tumor allograft models, both prophylactic and therapeutic vaccinations significantly retard tumor growth and prolong animal survival. Furthermore, the vaccinations were also able to reduce lung metastasis in a B16F10-OVA model.

Background: Pancreatic cancer (PC) stands out as one of the most lethal cancers. Due to late diagnosis, only a fraction of patients can be resected. Although it still has significant adverse effects and poor results, the treatment is connected with better overall survival than the prior treatment. Thus, new alternative therapy for advanced PC is needed. Materials/Methods. The impact of 10058-F4 and curcumin combination therapy on apoptosis and cell growth in SW1990 pancreatic cancer cells were determined in vitro using the CCK-8 assay and flow cytometry of Annexin V-FITC/PI, and the in vivo antitumor effect was determined utilizing SW1990-bearing pancreatic tumor mouse models induced by subcutaneous implantation. Results: At concentrations of (10 mol/L+2 mol/L), 10058-F4+curcumin obtained the highest rate of SW1990 cell death, and they had a beneficial effect on SW1990 pancreatic tumor-bearing animals. Furthermore, c-Myc, Akt phosphorylation, and the expression of apoptosis-related molecular were reduced, and the combination therapy modified the expression of apoptosis-related molecular. Conclusions: In vitro and in vivo, the combination of 10058-F4 plus curcumin has antipancreatic cancer actions that are substantially effective.

@#Nonarterial anterior ischemic optic neuropathy(NAION)is a group of common optic nerve diseases that seriously endanger visual function. It is resulted from insufficient perfusion of the posterior ciliary artery, which causes acute ischemia, structural and functional disorders of the optic nerve, and ultimately leads to hypopsia and even vision loss. The etiology and pathogenesis of this disease is complex. It is nowadays considered that multiple factors including local anatomy, risk of systemic vascular cause this disease together, which result in no clear, unified and recognized treatment. Early detection, diagnosis and treatment are of great significance in the prognosis of NAION. Possible therapeutic methods include etiological treatment, drug therapy, traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)treatment, combined medication, optic nerve sheath decompression, adjuvant treatments and exosomes. With the continuous development and application of various anti-NAION drugs in recent years, a variety of therapeutic methods have been proposed, especially with the exosomes as the research focus. In order to better treat NAION with improvement of the cure rate and guidance for clinical work, this paper mainly reviews the progress in the treatment of NAION in recent years.

Lactic acid is widely used in the food, drugs, cosmetics, and other industries to maintain the microbial stability of low-pH products. However, it is unclear whether lactic acid can affect silkworm (Bombyx mori) growth and reproduction. This study investigated the effects of lactic acid on the growth and reproduction of the silkworm. We analyzed the growth, cocoon quality, and reproductive performance of fifth instar larvae fed on mulberry leaves saturated with different concentrations (0.01, 0.1, 1, and 10%) of lactic acid and the control. Results showed that 0.01, 0.1, and 1% lactic acid supplementation positively affects growth and female cocoon quality, with increased larval weight and female cocoon shell weight compared to the control group. In contrast, 10% lactic acid was toxic to the larvae and significantly decreased growth, leading to larval death. Our study provides a basic reference for the optimal amount of preservatives. In addition, this study can be a desirable intervention for sericulturists and can play an important role in getting high return from silkworm-rearing activities.

Duckweeds have long been consumed as vegetables in several South Asian countries. In this study of the chemical constituents of duckweed Landoltia punctata, a new compound, apigenin 6-C-[ß-D-apiofuranosyl-(1 â†’ 2)]-ß-D-glucopyranoside (1), and a previously LC-MS identified compound, quercetin 3-O-ß-D-apiofuranoside (3), as well as three known compounds, luteolin 6-C-[ß-D-apiofuranosyl-(1 â†’ 2)]-ß-D-glucopyranoside (2), apigenin 6-C-ß-D-glucopyranoside (4), and luteolin 7-O-neohespirodise (5), were isolated and identified on the basis of MS and NMR spectroscopic analyses and chemical derivations. In total, 24 flavonoids were identified in L. punctata 0001 by UPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS2. In DPPH and ABTS assays, 3 exhibited significant antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 4.03 ± 1.31 µg/mL and 14.9 ± 2.28 µg/mL, respectively. In in vivo antioxidant activity assays, 1 significantly increased the survival rate of juglone-exposed Caenorhabditis elegans by 2 to 3-fold, and by 75% following thermal damage. Compounds 1-5 exhibited moderate scavenging capacities of intracellular reactive oxygen species in C. elegans exposed to H2O2.

ObjectiveTo understand the current situation of anxiety level and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) nursing needs among residents during the COVID-19 epidemic, and to discuss the relationship between them,so as to provide references for maintaining their mental health. MethodsA total of 560 residents were recruited using convenience sampling method, and the selected individuals completed three questionnaires based on online platform, including self-designed general information questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), and TCM nursing needs questionnaire. Then the correlation between anxiety level and TCM nursing needs was analyzed by Spearman correlation test. ResultsA total of 552 valid questionnaires were collected. The results of GAD-7 showed that the total score was (11.04±3.72), and average score of each item was (1.58±0.53). There were 328 cases (59.4%) without anxiety symptoms, 180 cases (32.6%) with mild anxiety, 33 cases (6.0%) with moderate anxiety, and 11 cases (2.0%) with severe anxiety. The analysis of TCM nursing needs questionnaire showed that the total score was (21.59±7.92), and dominated by the needs of medical knowledge (2.90±1.15) and TCM dietary care (2.82±1.13). The item score and total score of TCM nursing needs questionnaire of residents during the COVID-19 epidemic were positively correlated with GAD-7 total score (r=0.240~0.331, P<0.01). ConclusionResidents suffer from different levels of anxiety during the COVID-19 epidemic, and TCM nursing needs is on the rise, indicating that the anxiety level of residents is correlated with the needs of TCM nursing.

In traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed that the spleen is the foundation of acquired nature and the source of Qi and blood. All life activities of a person since birth depend on the water and grain essence transported by spleen and stomach. The liver helps the spleen to strengthen the movement, the liver and spleen cooperate with each other. The liver and the spleen are invigorated, so that the Qi and blood are sufficient. The external energy can nourish the limbs, muscles and fur. The Qi and blood can be supplied to the internal organs, meridians and bones, and the body can be nourished both inside and outside to strengthen the acquired foundation. Emotional dissatisfaction can lead to stagnation of liver Qi, loss of spleen Qi, failure to dredge Qi, and deficiency of spleen Qi, forming the syndrome of liver depression and spleen deficiency. Its clinical manifestations include the symptoms of liver Qi stagnation such as depression, stamina, and chest fullness, as well as symptoms of spleen deficiency such as anorexia, abdominal distension, loose stools. Xiaoyaowan is an effective classic prescription for the treatment of liver stagnation and spleen deficiency syndrome, which is based on the dosage form of Xiaoyaosan in Prescriptions of the Bureau of Taiping People's Welfare Pharmacy. It has the effect of relieving depression, nourishing blood and invigorating spleen. In modern research, it has been found that Xiaoyaowan has good curative effect in the treatment of endocrine diseases, liver diseases, immune diseases, and neurological diseases, etc. It was praised by the famous medical scientist YE Tian-shi in the Qing Dynasty as "the holy medicine for women", with a wide range of significant curative effects gynecology. Progress has been also made in pharmacological research. In this article, we have searched and consulted the relevant literature reports of Xiaoyaowan in recent years, summarized the key directions of the pharmacological research literature, and proposed deficiencies to provide relevant basis for the in-depth study of Xiaoyao pill in the future.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic refractory non-specific intestinal inflammatory disease that is difficult to be cured. The discovery of new ulcerative colitis-related metabolite biomarkers may help further understand UC and facilitate early diagnosis. It may also provide a basis for explaining the mechanism of drug action in the treatment of UC. Compound Sophorae Decoction (CSD) is an empirical formula used in the clinical treatment of UC. Although it is known to be efficacious, its mechanism of action in the treatment of UC is unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in endogenous substances in UC rats and the effects of CSD on metabolic pathways using the metabonomics approach. Metabolomics studies in rats with UC and normal rats were performed using LC-MS/MS. Rats with UC induced using TNBS enema were used as the study models. Metabolic profiling and pathway analysis of biomarkers was performed using statistical and pathway enrichment analyses. 36 screened potential biomarkers were found to be significantly different between the UC and the normal groups; it was also found that CSD could modulate the levels of these potential biomarkers. CSD was found to be efficacious in UC by regulating multiple metabolic pathways.

Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are proinflammation mediators that can induce the inflammatory model of the hippocampal neuron, and neuroinflammation participates in the pathophysiology of depression. Xiaoyao Pill is a classical Chinese medicine formula that has been used for the treatment of mental disorders such as depression in China since the Song dynasty. We established a hippocampal neuronal cell inflammation model by LPS and investigate the intervention effect and mechanism of Xiaoyao Pills. The expression levels of IL-6, TNF-α, IDO, 5-HT, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and ß-nerve growth factor were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. mRNA levels of IL-6, TNF-α, 5-HT1A, IDO-1, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, nerve growth factor, tropomyosin receptor kinase B, tropomyosin receptor kinase A, and cAMP response element-binding protein were detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. To further validate, protein expression was determined by western blot and immunofluorescence. Lipopolysaccharide-induced neuroinflammatory state resulted in the release of IL-6, TNF-α, and IDO and a decrease of BDNF, NGF, TrkB, TrkA, CREB, p-CREB, p-CREB/CREB, and SYP and inhibited hippocampal neurogenesis in the hippocampal neuron. Xiaoyao Pills significantly decreased the levels of IL-6, TNF-α, and IDO in cell supernatant and increased the expression of BDNF, NGF, TrkB, TrkA, CREB, p-CREB, p-CREB/CREB, and SYP as well as the average optical density of BrdU/NeuN double-labelled positive cells. Our study shows that lipopolysaccharides induce inflammation and nerve damage in hippocampal neurons, which are closely related to the pathological mechanism of depression. Xiaoyao Pills (XYW) play an important neuroprotective effect, which is related to its inhibition of neuronal inflammation and promoting the recovery of nerve injury. These results provide a pharmacologic basis for the treatment of depression of XYW in clinical application.

Gastrointestinal tract is the second largest organ in the body that mainly functions in nutrients and minerals intake through the intestinal barrier. Intestinal permeability maintains the circulation of minerals and nutrients from digested foods. Life and all the metabolic processes depend either directly or indirectly on proper functioning of GI tract. Compromised intestinal permeability and related disorders are common among all the patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which is a collective term of inflammatory diseases including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Many synthetic drugs are currently in use to treat IBD such as 5-aminosalicylic acid corticosteroids. However, they all have some drawbacks as long-term use result in many complications. These problems encourage us to look out for alternative medicine. Numerous in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that the plant-derived secondary metabolites including phenolic compounds, glucosinolates, alkaloids, terpenoids, oligosaccharides, and quinones could reduce permeability, ameliorate-related dysfunctions with promising results. In addition, many of them could modulate enzymatic activity, suppress the inflammatory transcriptional factors, ease oxidative stress, and reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines secretion. In this review, we summarized the phytochemicals, which were proven potent in treating increased intestinal permeability and related complication along with their mechanism of action.

Light energy is an important factor affecting plant growth. The hypothesis of "light-cold and heat property" holds that the original plants of traditional Chinese medicines(TCM) with cold property can obtain more energy to maintain growth in high light intensity environment, whereas the original plants of TCM with heat property prefer weak light environment. The current experiment investigated the effects of different light intensities on primary metabolites levels, energy levels, cell apoptosis, and leaves ultrastructure of Viola yedoensis, the original plants of TCM Violae Herba with cold property. There were five treatment groups of V. yedoensis, which was planted under Li1(8 500 lx),Li2(7 250 lx),Li3(6 000 lx),Li4(4 750 lx),Li5(3 500 lx)LEDs light intensity conditions, respectively. After harvest, primary metabolites levels, contents of ATP, ADP, AMP, activities of ATP synthesis and hydrolysis related enzyme, as well as cell apoptosis activation degree were measured, and transmission electron microscopy technique was used to observe leaves ultrastructure. The results showed that the total sugar, total protein, contents of ATP, ADP and AMP, activities of NADH dehydrogenase, cytochrome C reductase, ATP synthase and ATP hydrolase were positively correlated with light intensities(P<0.05). The crude fat content, activities of SDH and CCO enzyme showed a trend of increasing first and then decreasing, the highest value were found in Li2 group and Li3 group respectively(P<0.05). The vitality of caspase-3 and caspase-9 was negatively correlated with light intensities(P<0.05). The structure of chloroplast and mitochondria were normal and intact in Li1-Li3 groups, and the damage degree of Li4 and Li5 groups increased with the decrease of light intensities. The analysis of results indicated that the structure of chloroplast and mitochondria of V. yedoensis is normal under the light intensity of 6 000-8 500 lx, which can obtain more energy to maintain its growth and metabolism. When the light intensity is lower than 4 750 lx, the chloroplast morphology and mitochondrial membrane are damaged, affecting the metabolism of material and energy. There was no significant difference in energy charge of V. yedoensis in the light intensity range of 3 500~8 500 lx. The effect of light intensity on energy metabolism of V. yedoensis accords with the hypothesis of "light-cold and heat property".
