RESUMEN

Several Baccharis species are popularly known in traditional medicine as "carquejas", "vassouras", "ervas-santas" and "mio-mios", and are used as anti-inflammatories, digestives, and diuretics. This study aimed to investigate the chemical compositions and cytotoxic activities of essential oils (EOs) of six Baccharis species belonging to subgenus Coridifoliae, namely B. albilanosa, B. coridifolia, B. erigeroides, B. napaea, B. ochracea, and B. pluricapitulata. GC/MS analyses of the EOs showed that the oxygenated sesquiterpenes spathulenol (7.32-38.22 %) and caryophyllene oxide (10.83-16.75 %) were the major components for all the species. The EOs of almost all species were cytotoxic against cancer (BT-549, KB, SK-MEL and SK-OV-3) and normal kidney (VERO and LLC-PK1) cell lines, whereas B. erigeroides EO showed cytotoxicity only against LLC-PK1. This article augments the current knowledge about the chemical-biological properties of Baccharis subgenus Coridifoliae and discusses the therapeutic potentials of these economically unexploited plants.

Background: "Canela-guaicá," "guaicá," or "canela-sebo" [Ocotea puberula (Rich.) Nees] is a native species that is traditionally used by Kaingang indigenous groups for wound healing in southern Brazil. The aim of this study was to extract the mucilage from O. puberula barks, perform its phytochemical and physicochemical characterization, and investigate its healing potential. Methods: A murine wound model was used as a preclinical trial for authentication of the traditional knowledge from Kaingang indigenous communities. Results: Alkaloids and polysaccharides were identified by usual qualitative reactions and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. This natural product showed thermal stability and pseudoplastic properties that were considered suitable for the intended use. A higher initial exacerbation of inflammatory response after 7 days, an improved angiogenesis after 14 days, and an increased wound shrinkage after 21 days were statistically significant for the "canela-guaicá" bark extract in the preclinical trial when compared to the silver calcium alginate dressing (positive control). Conclusion: The healing potential of the "canela-guaicá" bark extract, traditionally used by the Kaingang indigenous community from southern Brazil, was preclinically validated. This study paves the way for designing novel wound dressings containing this natural product in order to treat acute and chronic wounds.

ABSTRACT Lavandula dentata, popularly known as lavender, is commonly used in traditional medicine for the treatment of digestive and inflammatory disorders. The objective of this study was to analyzed the chemical oil composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the essential oil and anatomical markers of the leaf and stem of L. dentata cultivated in South Brazil. Essential oil showed an antioxidant activity similar to rutin and gallic acid when analyzed by phosphomolybdenum method. However, by the free radical DPPH and ABTS methods, it showed a slight potential antioxidant. Essential oil presented 1,8-cineol (63%) as major component, antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria strains and Candida albicans, by broth microdilution. The anatomical profile provided the following main microscopic markers: hypostomatic leaves; diacytic stomata, thin and striate cuticle; multicellular and branched non-glandular trichomes; capitate glandular trichomes; peltate glandular trichomes; dorsiventral mesophyll; flat-convex shape midrib, truncated on the abaxial side; one collateral vascular bundle in the midrib; square stem shape, angular collenchyma alternated with cortical parenchyma; sclerenchymatic fibers well-developed on the four edges.

Abstract Sapium belongs to Euphorbiaceae family and comprises 23 species. Sapium glandulosum (L.) Morong is popularly known in Brazil as "pau-leiteiro" and "leitosinha" and it is used in traditional medicine to cicatrisation. Its leaf extracts have shown analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities. The preliminary set of pharmacognostic tools used for quality assessment of medicinal plant parts is macro- and micro-anatomy and S. glandulosum has not anatomical and histochemical description. Thus the aim of this study was to investigate the anatomical and histochemical characteristics of the leaf and stem of S. glandulosum as a means of providing information for quality assessment of herbal industry. The leaves and stems were investigated by employing field emission scanning electron microscopy, light microscopy, and histochemistry techniques. The analysis showed that S. glandulosum had the following anatomical features: dorsiventral and amphistomatic leaves; paracytic stomata; tabular crystal druses; non-articulated and branched laticifers; midrib's biconvex shape with vascular systems in open arc with invaginated ends; petiole with a round shape and slight concavity on the adaxial side; six collateral vascular bundles in U-shaped organisation; a circular stem shape and a sclerenchymatous ring. In the histochemical tests lipophilic components were found in cuticle and in the latex; phenolic compounds were met in the mesophyll and in the latex; starch grains were found in the parenchymatous sheath; lignified elements were met in the sclerenchymatous ring in the cortex and in the perivascular sclerenchymatous caps, beyond in the vessel elements. These features are helpful when conducting a quality control process.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the occlusive potential of four toothpastes by atomic force microscopy (AFM) before and after bleaching and quantify the hydrogen peroxide (HP) diffusion into the pulp chamber after application of desensitizing toothpastes in teeth with cervical lesions. METHODS: In 52 human extracted premolars, 2-mm deep artificial cervical lesions (ACL) were prepared and rinsed with EDTA for 10 seconds. Then teeth were adapted in a brushing machine and brushed with one of the following toothpastes [Regular toothpaste with no occlusive compounds Colgate Cavity Protection (CP), Oral-B Pro Health (OB), Colgate ProRelief (PR) and Sensodyne Rapid Relief (RR)] under constant loading (250 g; 4.5 cycles/seconds; 3 minutes). In 13 teeth (control group), no artificial cervical lesion was prepared. After that, the teeth were bleached with 35% HP with three 15-minute applications. The HP diffusion was measured spectrophotometrically as a stable red product based on HP reaction with 4-aminoanthipyrine and phenol in presence of peroxidase, at a wavelength of 510 nm and the dentin surfaces of ACL were evaluated before and after bleaching by AFM. Data was statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05). RESULTS: In the AFM images, some modifications of the dentin surface were observed after application of OB and RR. However, only for RR the formation of a surface deposit was produced, which occluded the majority of the dentin tubules. Also, only for RR, this deposit was not modified/removed by bleaching. Despite this, all groups with ACL showed higher HP penetration than sound teeth, regardless of the toothpaste used (P < 0.001).

AbstractBaccharis L. sect. Caulopterae, Asteraceae, comprises thirty species in Brazil that show stems represented by cladodes, which are very similar in morphology. These species are popularly known as “carqueja” in Brazil and Argentina and are used in popular medicine as diuretic and stomachic. The aim of this work was to examine the morpho-anatomical characters of cladodes of Baccharis pentaptera (Less.) DC. for diagnosis purposes. The plant material was prepared by light and scanning electron microscopy. B. pentaptera shows opposite and spread wings in the two-winged cladode axis and irregular arrangement in the three-winged cladode. The wings have a uniseriate epidermis with palisade parenchyma next to both sides of epidermis. The spongy parenchyma crossed by minor collateral vascular bundles is observed in the central region of wings. The glandular trichomes are capitate and biseriate and the non-glandular trichomes are uniseriate and flagelliform with 2–3 cells that extend from the base. In caulinar axis, there are uniseriate epidermis, chlorenchyma alternating with angular collenchyma and perivascular fiber caps adjoining the phloem which is outside the xylem. Prismatic and styloid crystals are verified in the perimedullary zone. These combined characters can assist the diagnosis of Baccharis species sect. Caulopterae.

The genus Calea belongs to the tribe Heliantheae and presents about 125 species. Calea serrata, popularly known as erva-de-cobra, chá-amargo and quebra-tudo, is an endemic species found in southern Brazil and is used in traditional medicine to treat ulcers and livers problems. The present work aimed to study the pharmacobotanical characters of leaves and stems of C. serrata for quality control purposes. The plant material was processed according to standard methods of light and scanning electron microscopy. Glandular capitate-stalked and capitate-sessile, uniseriate multicellular non-glandular trichome with tapered apical cell, conical non-glandular trichome, isobilateral mesophyll, secretory ducts near the endoderm and circular shape with six ribs in the stem were important characters, which contributed to the identification of the species.

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the impact of supplementing the diet of women during pregnancy and lactation with fish oil containing the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid, and its influence on the composition of human milk. METHODS: The sample comprised 60 women aged 18 to 38 years with appropriate dietary pattern, all of them healthy and nonsmokers. The intervention consisted of a daily supplementation with fish oil capsules that corresponded to a daily intake of 315mg of docosahexaenoic acid and 80mg of eicosapentaenoic acid during the third trimester of pregnancy and the first three months postpartum. The total fat content and fatty acid profile of their milk were determined by creamatocrit and gas chromatography. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis and the significance level was set at p<0.05. RESULTS: There was no statistical difference between the fat contents of the study (fish oil capsules) and control (capsules containing corn starch as filler) groups. However, the milk of women taking fish oil contained higher docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic acid levels 30 and 60 days after delivery. These results demonstrate that high omega-3 intake can influence its concentration in human milk. CONCLUSIONS: Given the importance of docosahexaenoic acid in the neonatal period, it is appropriate for pregnant and breastfeeding women to supplement on long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, which may be done by adding fish oil to the regular diet.


OBJETIVO: Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o impacto da suplementação na dieta de gestantes e de lactantes com ácidos graxos ômega-3 docosahexaenoico, sob a forma de óleo de peixe, e sua influência na composição do leite humano. MÉTODOS: A amostra foi constituída de 60 gestantes, com idade entre 18 e 38 anos, saudáveis, com padrão alimentar adequado e não fumantes. A intervenção consistiu na suplementação da dieta com cápsulas de óleo de peixe, totalizando um consumo diário de 315mg de ácido docosahexaenoico e 80mg de ácido eicosapentaenoico, no período entre o terceiro trimestre de gravidez e o terceiro mês após o parto. O teor de lipídeos totais e do perfil de ácidos graxos foi determinado pelos métodos de crematócrito e de cromatografia gasosa. Para a análise dos dados foi utilizada estatística descritiva e nível de significância de p<0,05. RESULTADOS: Entre o grupo sujeito à dieta suplementada (cápsulas de óleo de peixe) e o grupo controle (cápsulas contendo amido de milho como excipiente), não se constatou diferença estatística quanto aos valores totais de lipídeos. Entretanto, no leite das mães do primeiro grupo, a suplementação com óleo de peixe mostrou teores mais elevados na concentração dos ácidos docosahexaenoico e eicosapentaenoico, nos tempos 30 e 60 dias, demonstrando que um maior consumo de ômega-3 pode influenciar na sua concentração no leite humano. CONCLUSÃO: Considerando a importância do ácido docosahexaenoico no período neonatal, é adequado incrementar com ácidos graxos poliinsaturados de cadeia longa a alimentação de gestantes e de lactantes, o que pode ocorrer pela suplementação da dieta com óleo de peixe.

Eucalyptus L. is traditionally used for many medicinal purposes. In particular, some Eucalyptus species have currently shown cytotoxic properties. Local Brazilian communities have used leaves of E. benthamii as a herbal remedy for various diseases, including cancer. Considering the lack of available data for supporting this cytotoxic effect, the goal of this paper was to study the in vitro cytotoxic potential of the essential oils from young and adult leaves of E. benthamii and some related terpenes (α-pinene, terpinen-4-ol, and γ-terpinene) on Jurkat, J774A.1 and HeLa cells lines. Regarding the cytotoxic activity based on MTT assay, the essential oils showed improved results than α-pinene and γ-terpinene, particularly for Jurkat and HeLa cell lines. Terpinen-4-ol revealed a cytotoxic effect against Jurkat cells similar to that observed for volatile oils. The results of LDH activity indicated that cytotoxic activity of samples against Jurkat cells probably involved cell death by apoptosis. The decrease of cell DNA content was demonstrated due to inhibition of Jurkat cells proliferation by samples as a result of cytotoxicity. In general, the essential oils from young and adult leaves of E. benthamii presented cytotoxicity against the investigated tumor cell lines which confirms their antitumor potential.

BACKGROUND: Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam., popularly known as sweet potato (SP), has played an important role as an energy and a phytochemical source in human nutrition and animal feeding. Ethnopharmacological data show that SP leaves have been effectively used in herbal medicine to treat inflammatory and/or infectious oral diseases in Brazil. The aim of this research was to evaluate the phytochemical, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities of the crude leaves' extract of SP leaves. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The screening was performed for triterpenes/steroids, alkaloids, anthraquinones, coumarins, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and phenolic acids. The color intensity or the precipitate formation was used as analytical responses to these tests. The total antioxidant capacity was evaluated by the phosphomolybdenum complex method. Antimicrobial activity was made by agar disk and agar well diffusion tests. RESULTS: The phytochemical screening showed positive results for triterpenes/steroids, alkaloids, anthraquinones, coumarins, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and phenolic acids. Total contents of 345.65, 328.44, and 662.02 mg were respectively obtained for alkaloids, anthraquinones, and phenolic compounds in 100 g of the dry sample. The total antioxidant capacity was 42.94% as compared to ascorbic acid. For antimicrobial studies, no concentration of the SP freeze dried extract was able to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans, S. mitis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans in both agar disk and agar well diffusion tests. CONCLUSIONS: SP leaves demonstrated the presence of secondary metabolites with potential biological activities. No antimicrobial activity was observed.

Corymbia pertence à família Myrtaceae e envolve mais de 100 espécies arbóreas. Particularmente, a espécie Corymbia calophylla (Lindl.) K.D.Hill & L.A.S. Johnson é um dos taxa transferidos de Eucalyptus para Corymbia, com utilização para a fabricação de mobiliário requintado e para o tratamento de disfunções digestivas, segundo a medicina tradicional australiana. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar as características anatômicas da folha de C. calophylla, a partir de espécimes coletados na Embrapa Florestas (Colombo-PR, Brasil). As análises anatômicas foram conduzidas a partir dos métodos usuais de microscopia fotônica e microscopia eletrônica. A anatomia foliar revelou a presença de estômatos anomocíticos na face abaxial da folha, mesofilo dorsiventral e nervura mediana com cavidades secretoras inseridas no sistema vascular. Em secção transversal, o pecíolo apresentou formato plano-convexo. Na estrutura anatômica do limbo foliar, da nervura mediana e do pecíolo foram observadas cavidades secretoras contendo material de natureza lipofílica, além de idioblastos de conteúdo fenólico. Alguns idioblastos contendo drusas de oxalato de cálcio foram também observados no parênquima da nervura mediana de C. calophylla.


Corymbia, a genus of Myrtaceae, shows more than 100 tree species. In particular, Corymbia calophylla (Lindl.) K.D.Hill & L.A.S. Johnson is one of the taxa changed from Eucalyptus to Corymbia. C. calophylla has been used for fine furniture and for treating digestive upsets according to the Australian traditional medicine. The goal of this paper was to study the anatomical data of leaves from C. calophylla. The botanical material was collected from Embrapa Forest (Colombo-PR, Brazil). The anatomical analyses were performed by the usual light and scanning microtechniques. Anomocytic stomata were observed on the abaxial surface. The foliar blade showed dorsiventral mesophyll. Midrib having secretory cavities included on the vascular system was seen. In transection, a plane-convex petiole was found. Secretory cavities with oil content were verified in the anatomical structures of the foliar blade, midrib and petiole, as well as idioblasts with phenolic substances. Some calcium oxalate druses were observed in parenchymatous tissue of the midrib of C. calophylla.

A palinologia têm aplicações na Taxonomia de plantas atuais, Melissopalionologia, Farmacognosia, no auxílio na reconstituição de floras do Quaternário, no diagnóstico de alergias, etc. Muitas vezes, o único elemento de identificação é o grão de pólen, obtido de uma planta previamente determinada e referendada em um herbário. As sete espécies, em sete famílias, foram obtidas nos acervos dos herbários UEPG e UPCB. Os grãos foram submetidos à Acetólise. Para a montagem das lâminas foi usada gelatina-glicerinada de Kisser, seguindo-se a lutagem com parafina. A caracterização foi realizada através de vários critérios, como: forma, tamanho e ornamentação da exina. As espécies analisadas foram: Oenothera longiflora L.: Onagraceae, Crumenaria polygaloides Reiss.: Rhamnaceae, Esenbeckia grandiflora Mart.: Rutaceae, Solanum variabile Mart.: Solanaceae, Byttneria hatschbachii Crist.: Sterculiaceae, Gordonia fruticosa (Schrad.) H. Keng.: Theaceae, Vitex megapotamica (Spreng) Mold.: Verbenaceae. A família Verbenaceae é inconfundivelmente euripalinológica
