RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To analyze the impact of selenium supplementation on serum antiTPO levels and thyroid echogenicity in patients with CAT, evaluating the response in subgroups with different GPx1 genotypes. METHODS: CAT patients (n = 55) with positive antiTPO were randomized to selenomethionine (SeMet) 200 µg daily (n = 28) or placebo (n = 27) for 3 months. Assessments included GPx1 genotyping at baseline and serum levels of plasma selenium, erythrocyte GPx1 activity, antiTPO and thyroid echogenicity at baseline, and 3 and 6 months. RESULTS: In the SeMet group, the increase in plasma levels of selenium and erythrocyte GPx1 activity was similar among patients with different GPx1 genotypes. In the overall cohort, patients randomized to SeMet showed a 5 % decrease in antiTPO levels at 3 months (p = non-significant) and 20 % at 6 months (p < 0.001 versus 3 months). In contrast, patients in the placebo group did not show significant changes in antiTPO levels at any time point. Subgroup analysis showed that patients with different GPx1 genotypes presented comparable responses in antiTPO levels and echogenicity index to SeMet. CONCLUSIONS: Selenium supplementation decreased serum antiTPO levels in CAT patients, with similar response among patients with different GPx1 genotypes.

AIM: The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of 3 d of creatine supplementation on thermoregulation and isokinetic muscular performance. METHODS: Fourteen males performed two exercise bouts following 3 d of creatine supplementation and placebo. Subjects exercised for 60 min at 60-65% of VO2max in the heat followed by isokinetic muscular performance at 60, 180, and 300°·s(-1). Dependent variables for pre- and postexercise included nude body weight, urine specific gravity, and serum creatinine levels. Total body water, extracellular water and intracellular water were measured pre-exercise. Core temperature was assessed every 5 min during exercise. Peak torque and Fatigue Index were used to assess isokinetic muscular performance. RESULTS: Core temperature increased during the run for both conditions. Total body water and extracellular water were significantly greater (P<0.05) following creatine supplementation. No significant difference (P>0.05) was found between conditions for intracellular water, nude body weight, urine specific gravity, and serum creatinine. Pre-exercise scores for urine specific gravity and serum creatinine were significantly less (P<0.05) versus post-exercise. No significant differences (P>0.05) were found in peak torque values or Fatigue Index between conditions for each velocity. A significant (P<0.05) overall velocity effect was found for both flexion and extension. As velocity increased, mean peak torque values decreased. CONCLUSION: Three d of creatine supplementation does not affect thermoregulation during submaximal exercise in the heat and is not enough to elicit an ergogenic effect for isokinetic muscle performance following endurance activity.

In this work the influence of the carbon source concentration, of the type and concentration of the nitrogen source and of the cultivation conditions (temperature, aeration and agitation speed) in mineral medium formulated with glycerol was studied for biosurfactant production by Pseudomonas aeruginosa UCP0992. The kinetics of microorganism growth and biosurfactant production have been described for the medium supplemented with 3% glycerol and 0.6% NaNO(3), at 28 degrees C during 120 h under 200 rpm, showing a growth-associated production. The isolated biosurfactant corresponded to a concentration of 8.0 g/l after 96 h. The medium surface tension was reduced to 27.4 mN/m and the emulsification index of hexadecane reached 75-80% after 72 h. A CMC of 700 mg/l and an interfacial tension against hexadecane of 2 mN/m were obtained. The biosurfactant showed stability when submitted at 90 degrees C during 2 h, and thermal (4-120 degrees C) and pH (4-12) stability regarding the surface tension reduction and the emulsification capacity of vegetable oils and hydrocarbons, and tolerance under high salt concentrations (2-10%). The biosurfactant was characterized as a group of rhamnolipids with anionic nature. The crude biosurfactant did not show toxicity against the microcrustacean Artemia salina and the cabbage (Brassica oleracea), while the isolated biosurfactant showed toxicity against the microcrustacean at the CMC. The application of the biosurfactant in diesel recovery from sand was demonstrated by removal percentiles above 85%. The results obtained in this work are noteworthy for possible biosurfactant production from glycerol with potential of application in the environment.

An infusion of Campomanesia xanthocarpa Berg. (Myrtaceae) leaves (Guabiroba) and the herb Cuphea carthagenensis (Jacq.) J.F. Macbr. (Lythraceae) (Sete-sangrias) is traditionally used in the South of Brazil to treat high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. The effects of the aqueous extracts of these herbs were investigated in rats fed on a high calorie diet. Chronic treatment with the Guabiroba aqueous extract induced a significant reduction in weight gain in the rats, compared to the control group. Also, biochemical analysis showed that this treatment reduced the glycemia, while no effects on lipidic levels were observed. The biochemical analysis of the animals treated with Sete-sangrias aqueous extract showed no effect on glucose and triglyceride levels, while chronic treatment with the Sete-sangrias aqueous extract induced a significant reduction in plasma cholesterol in rats.

El presente trabajo se caracteriza como un estudio-caso; su objetivo es investigar la evolución de la sintomatología dolorosa postoperatoria en pacientes sometidos a cirugía torácica utilizando la estimulación eléctrica nerviosa transcutánea (TENS) como forma analgésica. La muestra fue constituida por cinco individuos, tres de sexo masculino con edad media de 39 años y dos del sexo femenino con edad media de 45 años, los cuales se sometieron a cirugía torácica (toracotomía posterolateral).Se utilizó como instrumento de evaluación del dolor una escala numérica y el cuestionario McGill (1) y se procedió a una evaluación preoperatoria, acompañamiento quirúrgico, acompañamiento postoperatorio inmediato (PO) con evaluación del dolor, aplicación de la TENS, acompañamiento durante la intervención fisioterapéutica y reevaluación del dolor. La TENS se mostró eficiente en la reeducación de la sintomatología dolorosa que presentaban los pacientes (AU)

A mannose/glucose-specific lectin was isolated from seeds of Parkia platycephala, the most primitive subfamily of Leguminosae plants. The molecular mass of the purified lectin determined by mass spectrometry was 47 946 +/- 6 Da (by electrospray ionization) and 47 951 +/- 9 Da (by matrix-assisted laser-desoption ionization). The apparent molecular mass of the lectin in solutions of pH in the range 4.5-8.5 determined by analytical ultracentrifugation equilibrium sedimentation was 94 +/- 3 kDa, showing that the protein behaved as a non-pH-dependent dimer. The amino-acid sequence of the Parkia lectin was determined by Edman degradation of overlapping peptides. This is the first report of the primary structure of a Mimosoideae lectin. The protein contained a blocked N-terminus and a single, nonglycosylated polypeptide chain composed of three tandemly arranged homologous domains. Each of these domains shares sequence similarity with jacalin-related lectin monomers from Asteraceae, Convolvulaceae, Moraceae, Musaceae, Gramineae, and Fagaceae plant families. Based on this homology, we predict that each Parkia lectin repeat may display a beta prism fold similar to that observed in the crystal structure of the lectin from Helianthus tuberosus. The P. platycephala lectin also shows sequence similarity with stress- and pathogen-upregulated defence genes of a number of different plants, suggesting a common ancestry for jacalin-related lectins and inducible defence proteins.

Background: The success of revascularization procedures for coronary artery disease could be lower in diabetic patients. Aim: To report the results of coronary angioplasty in diabetic and non diabetic patients. Patients and methods: All angioplasty procedures performed between 1996 and 1999 were recorded. Demographic data, procedure details, hospital outcome and evolution at one year of follow up were analyzed. Results: During the study period, 358 patients were treated; of these, 79 were diabetics. Despite the greater severity of coronary lesions among diabetic patients the clinical success of the procedure was 92.4 percent in diabetics and 91.8 percent in non diabetics. Hospital mortality was 1.3 pecent in diabetics and 0.7 percent in non diabetics. Major complications occurred in 3.8 percent of diabetics and 3.2 percent in non diabetics. One year survival was 95.9 percent for diabetics and 98 percent in non diabetics. There were five late cardiac deaths among non diabetics and 3 among diabetics during the year of follow up. The frequency of new revascularization procedures was 4.3 percent in diabetics and 8.3 percent in non diabetics. Event-free survival was 95.6 percent in diabetics and 89.2 percent in non diabetics. Conclusions: Results of angioplasty were similar in diabetic and non diabetic patients in terms of hospital outcome and late follow-up
