RESUMEN

Background: Heterogeneous clinical conditions were observed in individuals who had recovered from COVID-19 and some symptoms were found to persist for an extended period post-COVID. Given the non-specific nature of the symptoms, Chinese medicine (CM) is advantageous in providing holistic medical assessment for individuals experiencing persisting problems. Chinese medicine is a type of treatment that involves prescribing regimens based on CM Syndromes diagnosed by CM practitioners. However, inadequate research on CM elements behind the practice has faced scrutiny. Methods: This study analysed 1058 CM medical records from 150 post-COVID-19 individuals via a semi-text-mining approach. A logistic model with MCMCglmm was then utilised to analyse the associations between the indicated factors and identified conditions. Calculations were performed using R Studio and related libraries. Results: With the semi-text-mining approach, three common CM Syndromes (Qi and Yin Deficiency, Lung and Spleen Deficiency, Qi Deficiency of both Spleen and Lung) and nine clinical conditions (fatigue, poor sleep, dry mouth, shortness of breath, cough, headache, tiredness, sweating, coughing phlegm) were identified in the CM clinical records. Analysis via MCMCglmm revealed that the occurrence of persisting clinical conditions was significantly associated with female gender, existing chronic conditions (hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes mellitus), and the three persisting CM Syndromes. The current study triangulated the findings from our previous observational study, further showing that patients with certain post-COVID CM Syndromes had significantly increased log-odds of having persisting clinical conditions. Furthermore, this study elucidated that the presence of chronic conditions in the patients would also significantly increase the log-odds of having persistent post-COVID clinical conditions. Conclusion: This study provided insights on mining text-based CM clinical records to identify persistent post-COVID clinical conditions and the factors associated with their occurrence. Future studies could examine the integration of integrating exercise modules, such as health qigong Liuzijue, into multidisciplinary rehabilitation programmes.

RESUMEN

To study the efficacy and compliance analysis of pollen allergen drops in the treatment of allergic rhinitis. The method of single-center controlled was used to analyze the dates' results. From July 2021 to September 2021, 80 patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis were referred to the clinic of otorhinolaryngology in First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University.40 patients received sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT group), and the other 40 patients received symptomatic drug treatment as the control group. The total rhinoconjunctivitis symptom score (TRSS), the visual analogue scale(VAS), total medication score (TMS) and combined scores of medication and rhinoconjunctivitis symptoms (CSMRS) of the patient before the start of the treatment and after the first year of the treatment were compared to assess the efficacy of sublingual immunotherapy of Artemisia pollen. Follow the shedding during the study, the safety of the drug and the causes for compliance analysis were analyzed and recorded. The results of comparison with TRSS, VAS, TMS and CSMRS in two groups in the period of pretherapy were as follows: TRSS(12.393±3.023, 12.450±3.029, t=-0.077, P=0.939), VAS(8.357±1.026, 8.400±0.982, t=-0.173, P=0.862), TMS(3.214±0.568, 3.175±0.501, t=0.301, P=0.764), CSMRS (5.286±0.680, 5.253±0.677, t=0.199, P=0.843), there was no significant difference (P>0.05); lower observed symptom scores were got in the post-treatment pollen peak SLIT group compared to the control group, TRSS(3.964±1.551, 7.750±2.169, t=-7.918, P<0.05), VAS(2.893±0.956, 5.175±1.481, t=-8.286, P<0.05), TMS (1.821±0.863, 3.175±0.501, t=-8.163, P<0.05), CSMRS (2.489±0.921, 4.468±0.601, t=-10.723, P<0.05), and the differences between the groups were statistically significant (P<0.05); the SLIT group significantly reduced all symptom scores at the first peak compared to the starting, TRSS(12.393±3.023, 3.964±1.551, t=20.576, P<0.05), VAS (8.357±1.026, 2.893±0.956, t=30.070, P<0.05), TMS (3.214±0.568, 1.821±0.863, t=7.151, P<0.05), CSMRS(5.286±0.680, 2.489±0.921, t=14.533, P<0.05) and there was statistical difference (P<0.05). No significant adverse reactions occured during medication in the SLIT group. A total of 12 cases were shed in the SLIT group, so the compliance rate was 70%. The four reasons were that patients considered the course was long (4 cases, 33%); the drugs were expensive (3 cases, 25%); patients were busy with their work and life (3 cases, 25%); patients were affected by the outbreak (2 cases, 17%). In summary, Artemisia pollen sublingual drops may improve the symptoms of the patients who got allergic rhinitis caused by Artemisia pollen after the treatment for one year. However, due to the lack of sufficient understanding of immunotherapy or the difficulty in adhering to standardized medication, the compliance with sublingual immunotherapy is still poor, the compliance with sublingual immunotherapy needs to be further improved through patient education.

RESUMEN

Objective: To analyze the significance of HBV DNA below the lower detection limit of HBV RNA levels after long-term nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) antiviral therapy in patients with hepatitis B virus cirrhosis. Methods: 97 cases with hepatitis B virus cirrhosis treated with NAs antiviral therapy for at least 3 years between May 2018 to July 2019 were selected. High-sensitivity HBV DNA (<20 IU/ml), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), γ-glutamyltransferase (GGT), HBsAg, HBeAg and HBV RNA at least twice every 6 months were detected. According to Child-Pugh classification, HBeAg, HBsAg level, and HBV RNA level intergroup comparison was performed. Rank sum test, χ2 test and linear regression analysis were performed on the data. Results: Compared with the HBV RNA level of child-Pugh class A patients, the HBV RNA level of Child-Pugh class B+C patients were significantly higher [4.1 (0,4.9) log10 copies/ml and 2.0 (0,3.5) log10 copies/ml], and the difference was statistically significant (Z=2.370, P<0.05). According to different HBeAg levels, they were divided into HBeAg positive and negative group, and the quantitative comparison of HBV RNA levels between the two groups were 2.0 (0, 4.5) log10 copies/ml and 1.0 (1.0, 2.0) log10 copies/ml, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (Z=3.233, P<0.05). According to different HBsAg levels, they were divided into three groups: HBsAg≤100 IU/ml, 100

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of Huangqi Sijunzi decoction (HQSJZD) for treating cancer-related fatigue (CRF) of spleen and stomach Qi deficiency type after chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer. METHODS: A total of 94 breast cancer patients who developed CRF of spleen and stomach Qi deficiency type after chemotherapy were randomized into chemotherapy group (n=47) and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) + chemotherapy group (n=47). The patients in chemotherapy group received the AC or EC regimen and non-drug interventions including psychological counseling, and those in TCM + chemotherapy group received oral administration of HQSJZD in addition to chemotherapy for 21 days as a treatment cycle, after which improvement of fatigue was assessed using Modified Piper Fatigue Scale. The active ingredients and targets of HQSJZD were screened using the TCM System Pharmacology Analysis Platform (TCMSP); the CRF- and breast cancer-related disease targets were retrieved based on data from the GeneCards, NCBI gene and OMIM databases to construct the component-target network and the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. GO functional enrichment analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes KEGG pathway enrichment analysis of the target genes were performed to construct the component-disease-pathway-target biological network. The binding strength of the major drug ingredients and CRF key targets were predicted using AutoDock software. RESULTS: The scores for somatic fatigue, emotional fatigue and cognitive fatigue, along with the overall fatigue score, showed more significant improvements in TCM+chemotherapy group than in chemotherapy group (P < 0.001), and the response rate reached 89.4% in the combined treatment group. We identified 250 targets for HQSJZD, 2653 CRF-related genes, 15 329 breast cancer-related genes and 161 prescription-disease intersected targets, from which topological analysis identified 66 potential key targets. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses predicted multiple pathways related with the disease. Molecular docking results suggested that the core ingredients of HQSJZD showed high affinities to the key targets AKT1, CASP3, IL6, JUN and VEGFA, among which AKT1 might be the most important target for HQSJZD to treat CRF. CONCLUSION: HQSJZD can obviously improve CRF symptoms in breast cancer patients possibly by regulating multiple signaling pathways including PI3K-Akt through AKT1.

RESUMEN

In the egg production industry, trace elements are required as additional dietary supplements to play vital roles in performance and egg quality. Compared to inorganic microelements (ITs), appropriate dose of organic trace microelements (OTs) are environmentally friendly and sufficient to satisfy the needs of hens. In order to evaluate the extent to which low-dose OTs replace whole ITs, the effects of organic copper, zinc, manganese, and iron compound on the performance, eggshell quality, antioxidant capacity, immune function, and mineral deposition of old laying hens were investigated. A total of 1 080 57-week-old Jing Hong laying hens were assigned to five groups with six replicates of 36 layers each for an 8-week experimental period. The birds were fed either a basal diet (control treatment (CT)) or the basal diet supplemented with commercial levels of inorganic trace elements (IT 100%) or the equivalent organic trace elements at 20%, 30%, and 50% of the inorganic elements (OT 20%, OT 30%, and OT 50%, respectively). Results showed that compared with those in the CT treatment, feeding hens with inorganic or organic microelement diet had significant effects on the eggshell quality, antioxidant capacity, immune function, and mineral deposition of old laying hens (P < 0.05). The eggshell strength and ratio between OT 30%, OT 50%, and IT 100% were similar at weeks 4 and 8, and the eggshell thickness of these groups was also similar at weeks 6 and 8. At week 8, the eggshell colour in OT 50% was darker than that in IT 100%. The mineral content in the eggshells of OT 50% and IT 100% significantly increased (P < 0.001), with no significant difference in effective thickness, mammillary thickness, and mammillary knob width between groups. There were no differences in the malondialdehyde content, total antioxidant capacity, and total superoxide dismutase activity in serum between OT 30%, OT 50%, and IT100%. While the catalase activities, the interleukin-1ß, interleukin-10, immunoglobulin G, and immunoglobulin M concentrations in serum were not significantly different between OT 50% and IT 100%. The mineral contents in the faeces of the organic groups were considerably reduced compared with those in IT 100% (P < 0.001). In conclusion, dietary supplementation with 30-50% organic compound microelements has the potential to replace 100% inorganic microelements in the hen industry for improving eggshell quality, mineral deposition in the eggshell, antioxidant capacity, and immune function, and reducing emissions to the environment without negative effects on laying performance.

RESUMEN

Objective: To investigate the relationship between folic acid supplementation and the risk of preeclampsia (PE). Methods: A total of 9 048 pregnant women were selected from the First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University in Taiyuan from March 2012 to September 2016. Among them, 882 pregnant women with PE were divided into case group, and 8 166 pregnant women without PE were divided into control group. Information on demographic characteristics, folic acid supplementation, maternal complications, and other factors were collected by face-to-face interviews after child birth in the hospital. Unconditional logistic regression analyses were used to investigate the relationship between folic acid supplementation and the risk of PE and the effects of pre-pregnancy BMI on the relationship of folic acid supplementation with the risk of PE. Results: Compared with nonusers, folic acid supplement users had reduced risk of PE (OR=0.79, 95%CI: 0.64-0.96). Folic acid supplementation before and during pregnancy were negatively related with the risk of PE (OR=0.63, 95%CI: 0.49-0.81). Pregnant women who used folic acid tablets only or used both folic acid tablets and multivitamin containing folic acid had reduced risk of PE (OR=0.81, 95%CI: 0.66-0.99; OR=0.64, 95%CI: 0.49-0.85). No significant relationship was observed in the multivitamin group. Supplemental folic acid doses of <400, 400, and >400 µg/d were related with reduced risk of PE (OR=0.62, 95%CI: 0.42-0.91; OR=0.81, 95%CI: 0.66-0.99; OR=0.68, 95%CI: 0.49-0.94). After stratified by pre-pregnancy BMI, pregnant women who used folic acid supplementation, those with pre-pregnancy BMI<24.0 kg/m(2) had reduced risk of PE (OR=0.75, 95%CI: 0.59-0.96). However, no significant relationship was observed in women with pre-pregnancy BMI≥24.0 kg/m(2). Conclusions: Folic acid supplementation before and during pregnancy were related with reduced risk of PE. Pre-pregnancy BMI might affect the relationship between folic acid supplementation and the risk of PE. Appropriate folic acid supplementation should be recommend for women with different pre-pregnancy BMI.

RESUMEN

Abstract Ginkgo biloba is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine containing multiple components that contribute to its notable bioactivities. Variations of seasonal, meteorological and planting soil on the phytochemicals contents in G. biloba leaves due to the effects of growth meteorological and soil parameters were investigated in this study. The leaves of G. biloba were collected from different months and place in Zhejiang province, the contents of flavones (quercetin, kaempferol and isorhamnetin) and terpene lactones (bilobalide, ginkgolides A, B and C) were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD) method. The established methods were validated with good linearity, precision, repeatability, stability, and recovery. Comprehensive analysis suggested the proper harvest time for G. biloba was in October of Zhejiang province. The result of correlation analysis with meteorological factors shows that the temperature and precipitation have non-significant effect on the main components of G. biloba. In addition, the type and content (Mn and Zn) of the soil showed significantly effect on the content of flavonoids and terpene lactones. This study enriched the knowledge on the development and utilization value of the G. biloba leaves and was useful for determining the optimal harvest time and growing condition.

Objective: To investigate the damage and mechanism of artemisia annua pollen on tight junction of human nasal mucosa epithelial cells (HNEpC). Methods: HNEpC were cultured in vitro. Different concentrations of artemisia annua pollen (0, 20, 40, 80, 100, 160, 200 µg/ml) were used to intervene the cells for 24 h, and the cell proliferation activity was detected by the CCK-8 method. The expression and phosphorylation of p38MAPK signaling pathway were detected by Western Blot before and after the intervention of SB203580, a p38MAPK inhibitor in HNEpC. Immunofluorescence chemical staining, Western Blot and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) were used to observe the expression and distribution of tight junctions Occludin and Claudin-1. SPSS 21.1 software was used for statistical analysis. Results: CCK-8 results showed that, compared with the control group, the proliferation activity of HNEpC increased after 6 h intervention with different concentrations of artemisia annua pollen (all P<0.05). After 12 h of intervention, the proliferation activity of HNEpC in the 20, 40, 80, 100 and 160 µg/ml groups was not significantly changed (all P>0.05), while that in the 200 µg/ml group was decreased (P<0.05). After the intervention for 24 h, the proliferation activity of cells in the 20 and 40 µg/ml groups was not significantly changed (all P>0.05), while that in the 80, 100, 160 and 200 µg/ml groups was decreased (all P<0.05). Immunofluorescence staining showed that the Occludin and Claudin-1 proteins in the normal control group were localized on the cell membrane and expressed more and formed a ring structure around the cell membrane. However, under the intervention of high concentration artemisia annua pollen, its expression level decreased, appeared broken, fuzzy, and nonuniform distribution. Western Blot and qPCR results showed that after 24 h of intervention, the expression levels of HNEpC Claudin-1 protein and its mRNA in the pollen groups (40, 80, 100, 160, 200 µg/ml) of artemisia annua decreased compared with those of those of the control group (mRNA expression levels were 0.567±0.214, 0.443±0.109, 0.462±0.160, 0.497±0.134, 0.388±0.076 compared with 1.001±0.067, respectively, all P<0.05). However, the mRNA of Occludin protein and its mRNA only decreased in the 200 µg/ml treatment group (mRNA expression level was 0.631±0.109 compared with 1.016±0.026, P<0.05), while all the other treatment groups increased (mRNA expression levels were 1.258±0.134, 1.827±0.103, 2.429±0.077, 1.707±0.085, 1.477±0.066 compared with 1.016±0.026, respectively, all P<0.05). Western Blot showed that p-p38MAPK expression increased after intervention with 100, 160, 200 µg/ml artemisia annua pollen for 24 h. SB203580 could inhibit the decreasing expression of Occludin caused by artemisinin pollen (mRNA expression was 1.255±0.179 compared with 0.631±0.109, P<0.05), but had no effect on Claudin-1 protein expression. Conclusion: Pollen from artemisia annua may activate p38MAPK signaling pathway and destroy the close connection of HNEpC.

RESUMEN

AIMS: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of sophorolipids on several fungal and oomycete plant pathogens and the relationship between sophorolipids at different pH and antimicrobial activities. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sophorolipids had different solubility at different pH with a dramatic increase in solubility when pH was 6 or higher. Inhibition of mycelial growth of Phytophthora infestans by sophorolipids was affected by pH values, showing that when the pH value was higher, the inhibition rate was lower. Sophorolipids inhibited spore germination and mycelial growth of several fungal and oomycete pathogens in vitro including Fusarium sp., F. oxysporum, F. concentricum, Pythium ultimum, Pyricularia oryzae, Rhizoctorzia solani, Alternaria kikuchiana, Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici and P. infestans and caused morphological changes in hyphae by microscope observation. Sophorolipids reduced ß-1,3-glucanase activity in mycelia of P. infestans. In greenhouse studies, foliar application of sophorolipids at 3 mg ml-1 reduced severity of late blight of potato caused by P. infestans significantly. CONCLUSION: Sophorolipids influenced spore germination and hyphal tip growth of several plant pathogens and pH solubility of sophorolipids had an effect on their efficacy. Application of sophorolipids reduced late blight disease on potato under greenhouse conditions. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The findings indicated that sophorolipids have the potential to be developed as a convenient and easy-to-use formulation for managing plant diseases.

RESUMEN

Objective: To study the relationship between exposure factors in early pregnancy and preterm birth (PB), low birth weight (LBW) and small for gestational age (SGA) of neonates. Methods: A total of 3 172 pregnant women who were enrolled in the project of Chinese Pregnant Women Cohort Study-Peking Union Medical College (CPWCS-PUMC) from July 25, 2017 to July 24, 2018 and delivered before December 31, 2018 were selected as subjects in this study. The relationship between exposure factors in early pregnancy and adverse outcomes of neonatal delivery was analyzed by using binary logistic regression analysis. Results: The incidence rates of PB, LBW and SGA were 4.76%, 3.53% and 5.74%, respectively. In terms of PB, the analysis results showed that the gestational weight gain (GWG) and living in northern China were protective factors, while premature rupture of membranes, gestational hypertension, dental examination or treatment within 1-3 years and family with 3-4 members were risk factors. In the respect of LBW, GWG and daily consumption of milk and dairy products were the protective factors, while premature rupture of membranes, gestational hypertension, sedentary working time more than 6 hours, dental examination or treatment within 1-3 years and passive smoking were risk factors. For SGA, baby girl, passive smoking, peanut oil consumption and unsalted taste were risk factors, while folic acid supplementation was protective factor. Conclusion: The risk factors for PB, LBW and SGA were multifactorial, and relevant specific measures should be taken to reduce the occurrence of adverse neonatal outcomes.

RESUMEN

Alum sludge is the sludge discharged from a sedimentation tank in a drinking water treatment plant when polymerized with poly-aluminum chloride (PAC). In this paper, granular alum sludge adsorbent (GASA) was manufactured using powdery alum sludge (PAS) as the raw material and methods such as gluing and pore-forming. The effects of different binders, pore-forming agents, roasting temperatures, and roasting times on the formation of GASA and its dephosphorization performance were investigated. Results showed that the optimum binder was AlCl3 at a mass ratio of 8%, and the best pore-forming agent was starch at a 4% dosage ratio. Meanwhile, the optimum roasting temperature and time were 500 °C and 2 hours, respectively. The specific surface area of GASA was 23.124 m2/g. Scanning electron microscopy suggested that GASA's surface became rough, particles became tight, and average pore size increased, with additional pore channels. P adsorption by GASA reached 0.90 mg/g. The effluent phosphorus concentration of actual tail water decreased to 0.49 mg/L and the removal rate reached 73.5% when the GASA dosage was 20 g/L. The findings of this study are important for the further development of a low-cost adsorbent material for P removal in the future.

RESUMEN

A dose-response experiment with 8 supplemental vitamin A levels (0, 500, 1,000, 1,500, 2,500, 3,500, 7,000, and 14,000 IU/kg) were conducted to examine the effects of vitamin A on growth performance and tissue retinol of starter White Pekin ducks. A total of 512 one-day-old male Pekin ducks were randomly divided into 8 treatments and each treatment contained 8 replicate pens of 8 ducks. All these ducks were reared in raised wire-floor pens from hatch to 21 D of age. At 21 D of age, growth performance and retinol concentration in plasma and liver were measured. Among all ducks, the birds fed basal diet with no supplemental vitamin A had the lowest weight gain, feed intake, and plasma and liver retinol (P < 0.05). As supplemental vitamin A increased, weight gain and feed intake increased quadratically (P < 0.05) and plasma and liver retinol increased linearly or quadratically (P < 0.05). The weight gain and plasma retinol showed broken-line response to increasing supplemental vitamin A (P < 0.05). According to broken-line regression, the minimum supplemental vitamin A requirements for weight gain and plasma retinol were 2606 and 4371 IU/kg, respectively. It was concluded that vitamin A deficiency could lead to a reduction in growth performance and tissue retinol retention and plasma or liver retinol was available biomarker to assess duck vitamin A status.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE), as one of the most popular natural drug extracted from the grape, has been reported to improve endothelial function and arteriosclerosis. However, little is known about the influence of GSPE on hypertension and vascular remodeling. Profilin-1, an Actin-binding protein, is closely involved in the remodeling of large vessels in ouabain-induced hypertension. To date, there is no effective prevention or treatment in place for the high incidence of ischemic stroke associated with hypertension. In this study, we aimed to determine the role of GSPE via inhibition Profilin-1 in ischemic cerebral cortices of ouabain-hypertension rats and potentially provide a new target to prevent stroke associated with hypertension. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The blood pressure of male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats was measured during a period of ouabain-induced hypertension. The expression of Profilin-1, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in the cerebral cortex were determined by quantitative Real Time-PCR (qRT-PCR) and Western blot. Histopathological and behavioral tests were also conducted. RESULTS: Blood pressure elevation started at week 5 and reached clinical standards for hypertension at week 8. GSPE was proved to suppress Profilin-1 and VEGF levels through inhibition of Profilin-1-protein kinase B (AKT)-hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) signal pathway and promote eNOS expression. Moreover, the histopathological and ethiological improvement was observed in GSPE over-expression and Profilin-1 inhibition groups. CONCLUSIONS: We detected that GSPE could improve cerebral vascular damage through inhibiting Profilin-1 in an ouabain-induced hypertension model.

RESUMEN

AIMS: Increasing attention has been attracted to intestinal microbiota, due to interactions with nutrition, metabolism and immune defence of the host. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) feed additives have been applied in aquaculture to improve fish health, but the interaction with fish gut microbiota is still poorly understood. This study aimed to explore the effect of adding TCM in feed on the intestinal microbiota of gibel carp (Carassius auratus gibelio). METHODS AND RESULTS: Bacterial communities of 16 fish intestinal contents and one water sample were characterized by high-throughput sequencing and analysis of the V4-V5 region of the 16S rRNA gene. The results showed that the composition and structure of the bacterial community were significantly altered by the TCM feeding. Some phyla increased markedly (Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, etc.), while Fusobacteria were significantly reduced. Concurrently, the richness and diversity of the taxonomic units increased, and the microbiota composition of TCM-treated fish was more homogeneous among individuals. At the genus level, the addition of TCM tended to reduce the incidence of potential pathogens (Aeromonas, Acinetobacter and Shewanella), while stimulating the emergence of some potential probiotics (Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, Bacillus and Pseudomonas). CONCLUSIONS: These data suggested that the feed additive could regulate the fish intestinal microbiota by reinforcing the microbial balance. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study may provide useful information for further application of TCM for diseases prevention and stress management in aquaculture.

RESUMEN

Objective: To investigate the association between periconceptional folic acid supplementation and small for gestational age (SGA) birth based on maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and provide evidence for the development of comprehensive prevention programs on SGA birth. Methods: Between March, 2012 and September, 2016, a total of 8 523 pregnant women delivering in the First Affiliated Hospital of Shanxi Medical University were surveyed to collect the information about their demographic characteristics, folic acid supplementation before and during pregnancy and about their infants. Among their infants, 1 066 were small for gestational age (case group), 7 457 were appropriate for gestational age (AGA) (control group). Unconditional logistic regression model was used to evaluate the association between periconceptional folic acid supplementation and SGA birth in the context of different pre-pregnancy BMI. Results: The overall incidence of SGA birth was 12.51% (1 066/8 523). After adjusting the confounding factors, pre-pregnancy BMI<18.5 kg/m(2) was a risk factor for SGA birth (OR=1.22, 95%CI: 1.01-1.47), pre-pregnancy BMI≥24.0 kg/m(2) was associated with a reduced risk of SGA birth (OR=0.81, 95%CI:0.68-0.97). After adjusting confounding factors, periconceptional folic acid supplementation was a protective factor for SGA birth (OR=0.82, 95%CI: 0.68-0.98). After stratified by pre-pregnancy BMI, periconceptional folic acid supplementation was associated with the reduced risk of SGA birth in overweight group (24.0 kg/m(2)≤BMI<28.0 kg/m(2)) with OR of 0.55 (95%CI: 0.36-0.85). No significant association was observed in other groups. When examined by folic acid supplement type, periconceptional single folic acid supplementation (400 µg per tablet) was a protective factor for SGA birth (OR=0.82, 95%CI: 0.69-0.99). After stratified by pre-pregnancy BMI, periconceptional single folic acid supplementation (400 µg per tablet) was associated with the reduced risk of SGA birth in overweight groups (OR=0.56, 95%CI: 0.36-0.86). No association was observed between periconceptional folic acid containing multivitamin supplementation and SGA birth. Conclusions: Periconceptional folic acid supplementation (400 µg) was associated with reduced risk of SGA birth in women with pre-pregnancy BMI≥24.0 kg/m(2) and<28.0 kg/m(2). No association between folic acid supplementation and SGA was observed in other groups. This study suggests that pre-pregnancy BMI might modify the influence of folic acid supplementation on the risk of SGA birth.

OBJECTIVE: Glycosides of cistanche (GC) is extracted from Xin Jiang Cistanche, which is widely used as a Chinese herb. This study aims to evaluate the effects of GC on vascular dementia (VD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The VD model was established by the ligature of the bilateral common carotid artery in adult Wistar rats, who received daily i. p. administration of saline, GC (10 mg/kg body weight/d, i.p.) or oxiracetam (450 mg/kg body weight/d, i.p) for 14 days. Morris Water Maze test valued cognitive performance of the rats. The hippocampus was dissected and subjected to proteomics and immunohistochemical analysis. RESULTS: The GC group showed significantly lower escape latency than the VD group at four and five days after surgery. They showed no significant difference when compared with sham-operated group and the oxiracetam control group. In the hippocampus, the 21 protein spots in the GC group showed different expression levels compared with the VD group. This included the four proteins that showed a significant difference: three upregulated proteins thioredoxin-like protein 1, dual specificity mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 1 and dihydropyrimidinase-related protein 2 (CRMP-2), and one down-regulated protein glutathione synthetase. Immunohistochemistry analysis showed that P-tau protein level was significantly higher in the VD model group than the sham-operated group (p < 0.05). After GC treatment, P-tau protein level in VD model rats showed a significant decrease compared with VD group treated with saline (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The GC plays a critical role in protecting the hippocampal neurons in the VD, by decreasing P-tau phosphorylation and increasing the CRMP-2 expression level. Pharmacological manipulation of GC offers a new opportunity for VD treatment.

RESUMEN

1. A dose-response experiment with 6 dietary choline concentrations (0, 342, 779, 1285, 1662 and 1962 mg/kg) was conducted with male White Pekin ducks to estimate the choline requirement from 21 to 42 d of age. 2. Ninety 21-d-old male White Pekin ducks were allotted to 6 dietary treatments, each containing 5 replicate pens with three birds per pen. At 42 d of age, final weight, weight gain, feed intake and feed/gain were measured. Liver was collected to determine total liver lipid, triglyceride and phospholipids. 3. Significant positive effects of dietary choline on final weight, weight gain and feed intake were observed. In addition, dietary choline supplementation significantly decreased liver lipid and triglyceride content and increased liver phospholipids of Pekin ducks. 4. According to broken-line regression analysis, the choline requirements of male White Pekin ducks from 21 to 42 d of age for weight gain, feed intake and total liver lipid were 980, 950 and 1130 mg/kg. Pekin ducks needed more choline to prevent excess liver lipid deposition than to maintain growth.
