RESUMEN

In traditional Chinese Medicine, Prunella vulgaris L. (PVL) is potentially effective in the treatment of some human malignancies including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the detailed mechanism of action remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to decipher the constitutes of the bioactive ingredients of PVL, and its mechanism against HCC using network pharmacology and in vitro experiments. The bioactive components of PVL were obtained by Traditional Chinese Medicine System Pharmacology Database and Analysis platform database, and the targets of bioactive components of PVL was investigated by Swiss Target Prediction database. HCC related targets were obtained from GEO database, GeneCards database and DisGeNET database, and the gene ontology function annotation and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis were conducted for annotating the biological function of gene targets. A protein-protein interaction network was constructed using STRING database. Molecular docking of key bioactive ingredients was performed using AutoDock Vina. Cell proliferation and apoptosis were detected by cell counting kit-8 and flow cytometry, respectively. The expression level of the target genes of PI3K/Akt pathway were detected by qPCR. In the present work, 11 bioactive components of PVL were screened out, which acted on 177 potential targets. In addition, 13,517 genes were strongly associated with HCC pathogenesis, of which 158 targets are overlapped with PVL's targets. KEGG results identified 39 signaling pathways closely associated with the 158 targets. Molecular docking showed that the main bioactive components of PVL, kaempferol, morin, quercetin, luteolin, and spinasterol, had good binding activity with the core proteins in cancer biology such as AKT1, EGFR, SRC, ESR1, and PPARG. In vitro assays showed that quercetin, one of the main components of PVL extracts effectively inhibited HCC cell proliferation, and promoted apoptosis, which may be associated with PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. In summary, PVL may regulate HCC progression by regulating core targets such as AKT1, EGFR, SRC, ESR1, and PPARG, and acting on PI3K-Akt signaling pathway.

Purpose: Elucidation of the cardio-oncologic knowledge among the oncology nurses of tertiary hospitals in Shanxi Province to provide better insights and directions for management by nursing managers. Background: China's National Health and Wellness Commission issued the Action Plan for Further Improving Nursing Services in June 2023, which requires nurses to provide patients with physical and mental holistic nursing services, such as medical care, condition observation, assistance with treatment, and health guidance. Most oncology patients are treated with chemotherapy, but the modality can cause greater harm to patients, especially cardiotoxicity. How to provide precise care for chemotherapy patients is a problem for nursing managers. Methods: In order to investigate the level of cardio-oncologic knowledge among the oncology nurses of tertiary care hospitals in Shanxi Province, China, a questionnaire was created based on the relevant literature and the provided instructions on cardio-oncology. The chi-squared test was performed for multiple comparisons of the level of knowledge of disease observation, health guidance, and implementation of treatment. Spearman correlation analysis was performed to analyze the correlation between the levels of cardio-oncologic knowledge and general information of hospitals and nurses. Results: Cardio-oncology awareness among the oncology nurses was 0.1%-44.7%, the awareness rate of single dimension was 0 to 3.9%, and overall awareness rate was 0. A partially significant difference was revealed in the two-by-two comparisons of the awareness rates of the three dimensions of disease observation, health guidance, and implementation of treatment (P < 0.05). A correlation was observed between the cardio-oncologic knowledge and some of the hospital and the nurses' general information data (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Oncology nurses exhibited a low rate of awareness related to cardio-oncology. Hospitals could establish oncology nursing teams to train the oncology nurses to promote their cardio-oncologic knowledge and ensure the quality of daily care provided by these nurses.

In this study, we analyzed the vertical distribution characteristics of root biomass density, root length density, root surface area density in monoculture and mixture of Pinus tabuliformis and Robinia pseudoacacia plantations in Caijiachuan small watershed of Jixian County, Shanxi. We examined their relationships with soil physical and chemical properties in different stand types. The results showed that the total root biomass density of P. tabuliformis and R. pseudoacacia in mixture was more than 75% higher than that in monoculture. Root system of P. tabuli-formis mainly distributed in shallow layer (0-40 cm), while that of R. pseudoacacia was deeper (40-80 cm). Fine roots were predominant in different diameter classes. Length density and surface area density of fine roots were in the order of R. pseudoacacia in mixture > P. tabuliformis in mixture > R. pseudoacacia stand > P. tabuliformis stand. Root biomass density of fine roots was in the order of P. tabuliformis in mixture > R. pseudoacacia in mixture > P. tabuliformis stand > R. pseudoacacia stand. In vertical profile, the total root and fine root biomass, root length and root surface area density of P. tabuliformis stand, R. pseudoacacia stand, P. tabuliformis in mixture and R. pseudoacacia in mixture showed a rule of decreasing with the increases of soil depth. Under different stand types, fine root length density, root biomass density and total root length density were positively correlated with soil total nitrogen, soil organic carbon, and soil water contents. Total root surface area density was significantly positively correlated with soil organic carbon, soil water content, and soil total nitrogen. The distribution of roots in pure and mixed stands of P. tabuliformis and R. pseudoacacia showed different patterns. Compared with the pure stand, the mixed stand had higher root biomass, soil nutrient contents, and soil water content.

As cancer therapies advance and patient survival improves, there has been growing concern about the long-term adverse effects that patients may experience following treatment, and concerns have been raised about such persistent, progressive, and often irreversible adverse effects. Chemotherapy is a potentially life-extending treatment, and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is one of its most common long-term toxicities. At present, strategies for the prevention and treatment of CIPN are still an open problem faced by medicine, and there has been a large amount of previous evidence that oxidative damage is involved in the process of CIPN. In this review, we focus on the lines of defense involving antioxidants that exert the effect of inhibiting CIPN. We also provide an update on the targets and clinical prospects of different antioxidants (melatonin, N-acetylcysteine, vitamins, α-lipoic acid, mineral elements, phytochemicals, nutritional antioxidants, cytoprotectants and synthetic compounds) in the treatment of CIPN with the help of preclinical and clinical studies, emphasizing the great potential of antioxidants as adjuvant strategies to mitigate CIPN.

Retinoic-acid-receptor-related orphan receptor γ (RORγ) is a major transcription factor for proinflammatory IL-17A production. Here, we revealed that the RORγ deficiency protects mice from STZ-induced Type 1 diabetes (T1D) through inhibiting IL-17A production, leading to improved pancreatic islet ß cell function, thereby uncovering a potential novel therapeutic target for treating T1D. We further identified a novel RORγ inverse agonist, ginseng-derived panaxadiol, which selectively inhibits RORγ transcriptional activity with a distinct cofactor recruitment profile from known RORγ ligands. Structural and functional studies of receptor-ligand interactions reveal the molecular basis for a unique binding mode for panaxadiol in the RORγ ligand-binding pocket. Despite its inverse agonist activity, panaxadiol induced the C-terminal AF-2 helix of RORγ to adopt a canonical active conformation. Interestingly, panaxadiol ameliorates mice from STZ-induced T1D through inhibiting IL-17A production in a RORγ-dependent manner. This study demonstrates a novel regulatory function of RORγ with linkage of the IL-17A pathway in pancreatic ß cells, and provides a valuable molecule for further investigating RORγ functions in treating T1D.

In order to explore the characteristics of organic carbon mineralization and the variation law of organic carbon components of an artificial forest in a loess hilly area, an artificial Robinia pseudoacacia forest restored for 13 years and the adjacent slope farmland were selected as the research objects, and indoor culture experiments under three different temperature treatments (15, 25, and 35℃) were carried out. The results indicated that the mineralization rate of soil organic carbon decreased sharply at first and then stabilized. The cumulative release of organic carbon increased rapidly in the initial stage of culture and gradually slowed in the later stage. Soil organic carbon mineralization in sloping farmland was more sensitive to temperature change, and its temperature sensitivity coefficient Q10 was 1.52, whereas that in R. pseudoacacia forest land was only 1.38. According to the fitting of the single reservoir first-order dynamic equation, the soil mineralization potential Cp of R. pseudoacacia forest land and slope farmland was between 2.02-4.32 g·kg-1 and 1.25-3.17 g·kg-1, respectively, that is, the mineralization potential of the R. pseudoacacia forest was higher. During the cultivation period, the content of various active organic carbon components decreased with time, and that in the R. pseudoacacia forest land was greater than that in the slope land. The cumulative carbon release of soil was significantly positively correlated with the contents of MBC and DOC (P<0.05), and Q10 (15-25℃) was negatively correlated with the contents of SOC, EOC, and SWC (P<0.05). These results could provide some reference for the study of soil carbon sequestration in loess hilly regions under climate change.

Litter decomposition is the main source of soil organic carbon (SOC) pool, regarding as an important part of terrestrial ecosystem C dynamics. The turnover of SOC is mainly regulated by extracellular enzymes secreted by microorganisms. However, the response mechanism of soil C-degrading enzymes and SOC in litter decomposition remains unclear. To clarify how SOC fraction dynamics respond to C-degrading enzymes in litter decomposition, we used field experiments to collect leaf litter and SOC fractions from the underlying layer in Robinia pseudoacacia plantations on the Loess Plateau. Our results showed that SOC, easily oxidizable organic C, dissolved organic C, and microbial biomass C increased significantly during the decomposition process. Litter decomposition significantly decreased soil hydrolase activity, but slightly increased oxidase activity. Correlation analysis results showed that SOC fractions were significantly positively correlated with the litter mass, lignin, soil moisture, and oxidase activity, but significantly negatively correlated with cellulose content and soil pH. Partial least squares path models revealed that soil C-degrading enzymes can directly or indirectly affect the changes of soil C fractions. The most direct factors affecting the SOC fractions of topsoil during litter decomposition were litter lignin and cellulose degradation, soil pH, and C-degrading enzymes. Furthermore, regression analysis showed that the decrease of SOC stability in litter decomposition was closely related to the decrease of soil hydrolase to oxidase ratio. These results highlighted that litter degradation-induced changes in C-degrading enzyme activity significantly affected SOC fractions. Furthermore, the distribution of soil hydrolases and oxidases affected the stability of SOC during litter decomposition. These findings provided a theoretical framework for a more comprehensive understanding of C turnover and stabilization mechanisms between plant and soil.

In order to explore the effects of straw returning combined with fertilizer on soil nutrients and winter wheat yield in the Guanzhong area, an experimental split plot design was utilized. The main plot consisted of no straw returning (S0) and straw returning (S). The sub-regions consisted of no fertilizer (WF), nitrogen fertilizer (NF), and nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer (NPF). Ecological stoichiometry was used to study the relationship between soil carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus content, and yield under straw returning combined with nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer conditions. The results showed that straw and fertilization interactions had significant effects on soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus contents in the surface layer (0-20 cm) (P<0.05). Compared with that in the S0WF treatment, the SNPF treatment significantly increased soil organic carbon and total nitrogen contents in the surface layer (0-20 cm) (P<0.05). The interaction between straw and year had significant effects on soil total nitrogen content in the surface layer (0-20 cm) (P<0.05). With the increase in straw returning time, the total nitrogen content of soil 0-20 cm under the SWF treatment was significantly higher than that under the S0WF treatment (P<0.05). Straw and fertilization and their interaction had no significant effects on organic carbon and total nitrogen contents in the 20-40 cm soil layer (P>0.05). Straw and straw interaction with fertilization significantly affected total P content in 20-40 cm soil (P<0.05). Compared with that in the SWF treatment, the SNPF treatment significantly increased the total phosphorus content in the 20-40 cm soil layer (P<0.05). Straw returning combined with chemical fertilizer also had a significant effect on soil stoichiometry. Compared with that in the S0WF treatment, the S0NPF treatment decreased soil C:N in the surface layer (0-20 cm) and increased soil C:P and N:P in the surface layer (0-20 cm). Compared with that in the SWF treatment, the SNF treatment reduced soil C:N in the surface layer (0-20 cm). Straw returning combined with chemical fertilizer also had a significant effect on winter wheat yield. In 2020 and 2021, the SNPF treatment increased production by 24.23% and 28.9%, respectively, compared with that of the S0WF treatment. Correlation analysis showed that yield was significantly positively correlated with C:N (P<0.05) and C:P (P<0.01). At the same time, total nitrogen and N:P were positively correlated with treatment years (P<0.001). In conclusion, straw returning and that combined with nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer (SNPF) can improve soil nutrient characteristics, change soil stoichiometric characteristics, and increase yield in the Guanzhong area. Therefore, the results of this study indicate that straw returning combined with nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer (SNPF) is an effective way to optimize regional farmland nutrient management and improve grain production capacity.

To reveal the change in the characteristics of soil microbial C-degrading enzyme activities and the response to the components of C during the restoration process of Robinia pseudoacacia forests in the Loess Plateau, the components of the soil C pool, C-degrading enzyme activities, and microbial metabolic entropy of R. pseudoacacia in different restoration stages were studied, and the response relationship between C-degrading enzymes and soil C components was explored. The results showed that the microbial respiration (MR) first increased and then decreased with the restored years. We found that the microbial metabolic entropy (qCO2) decreased significantly with the restored years, but the microbial entropy (qMB) increased. Soil C-degrading enzymes increased significantly in the early-stage restoration of R. pseudoacacia; however, oxidizing enzymes (PO and PER) and cellobiohydrolase (CBH) decreased in the late stage of restoration. The soil organic C and recalcitrant organic C increased significantly with the restored years; however, there was no significant difference for the labile organic C. Correlation analysis and the partial least squares-path model (PLS-PM) showed that soil C-degrading enzymes and C components were significantly correlated with microbial respiration and entropy (qCO2 and qMB), respectively. The hydrolytic enzyme (BG+CBH) was significantly positively correlated with SOC, microbial biomass C, qMB, and recalcitrant and labile organic C. The oxidizing enzyme (PO+PER) was significantly positively correlated with the soil clay and qCO2. In addition, the recalcitrant organic C was the key driver of soil microbial metabolism affected by vegetation restoration. Overall, the ecosystem of R. pseudoacacia plantations would gradually stabilize with the increase in restored years and significantly increase the sequestration effect of soil C. These results will be helpful to understand the transformation rule and regulation mechanism of the soil C pool in vulnerable habitats and provide scientific basis for the restoration and management of vegetation in the Loess Plateau.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused huge deaths and economic losses worldwide in the current pandemic. The main protease (Mpro) of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is thought to be an ideal drug target for treating COVID-19. Leupeptin, a broad-spectrum covalent inhibitor of serine, cysteine, and threonine proteases, showed inhibitory activity against Mpro, with a 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 127.2 µM in vitro in our study here. In addition, leupeptin can also inhibit SARS-CoV-2 in Vero cells, with 50% effective concentration (EC50) values of 42.34 µM. More importantly, various strains of streptomyces that have a broad symbiotic relationship with medicinal plants can produce leupeptin and leupeptin analogs to regulate autogenous proteases. Fingerprinting and structure elucidation using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), respectively, further proved that the Qing-Fei-Pai-Du (QFPD) decoction, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula for the effective treatment of COVID-19 during the period of the Wuhan outbreak, contains leupeptin. All these results indicate that leupeptin at least contributes to the antiviral activity of the QFPD decoction against SARS-CoV-2. This also reminds us to pay attention to the microbiomes in TCM herbs as streptomyces in the soil might produce leupeptin that will later infiltrate the medicinal plant. We propose that plants, microbiome, and microbial metabolites form an ecosystem for the effective components of TCM herbs. IMPORTANCE A TCM formula has played an important role in the treatment of COVID-19 in China. However, the mechanism of TCM action is still unclear. In this study, we identified leupeptin, a metabolite produced by plant-symbiotic actinomyces (PSA), which showed antiviral activity in both cell culture and enzyme assays. Moreover, leupeptin found in the QFPD decoction was confirmed by both HPLC fingerprinting and HRMS. These results suggest that leupeptin likely contributes to the antiviral activity of the QFPD decoction against SARS-CoV-2. This result gives us important insight into further studies of the PSA metabolite and medicinal plant ecosystem for future TCM modernization research.

BACKGROUND: To systematically evaluate the effectiveness and safety of traditional Chinese medicine preparation XPYEG combined with SBI and SBI alone in the treatment of REC, and to provide the reference in drugs for the clinical treatment of children with rotavirus enteritis. METHODS: Retrieving the English databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library and Embase; Chinese databases: CNKI, CBM and WANFANG Data. Retrieving a randomized controlled trial of XPYEG and SBI in the treatment of REC. The retrieval time is from the above database until September 2020. The retrieval strategy of combining free words and subject words is adopted, and the references included in the literature are searched manually in accordance with the literature studied in this paper and not included in the above database. Two researchers screen the literature according to the literature inclusion and exclusion criteria, extract valid data and evaluate the quality of the literature, and cross-check it. Using the RevMan 5.3 software to conduct the meta-analysis on the main outcome and secondary outcome indicators of the included literature, while assessing the evidence quality of included study. RESULTS: The effectiveness and safety of XPYEG and SBI in the treatment of REC are presented through the main and secondary outcome indicators. OSF REGISTRATION NUMBER: DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/3QSZG. CONCLUSION: This study will conclude whether the combination of XPYEG and SBI is more effective than SBI alone in the treatment of REC, and whether the medication increases the risk of adverse reactions compared with single medication. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This study does not involve the specific patients, and all research data comes from publicly available professional literature, so an ethics committee is not required to conduct an ethical review and approval of the study.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the feasibility of evaluating the effectiveness and safety of electroacupuncture versus sham electroacupuncture for patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHOD: A pilot randomized controlled trial was conducted at a teaching hospital in Beijing. A total of 30 patients with KOA (Kellgren grade II or III) were randomly allocated to an eight-week treatment of either electroacupuncture or sham electroacupuncture. Patients and outcome assessors were blinded to group allocation. The primary outcome was the proportion of responders achieving at least 1.14 seconds decrease in the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) at week eight compared with baseline. The secondary outcomes included the knee range of motion, the knee extensor and flexor muscle strength, Lequesne index, 9-step stair-climb test (9-SCT), and TUG. RESULTS: Of 30 patients allocated to two groups, 27 (90%) completed the study. The proportion of responders was 53.3% (8 of 15) for electroacupuncture group and 26.7% (4 of 15) for sham electroacupuncture group by the intention-to-treat analysis (P = 0.264). There was no statistically significant difference in TUG between the two groups at eight weeks (P = 0.856). The compliance rate measured according to patients who conformed to the protocol and had received treatments ≥20 times was 93.3% (28 of 30). The dropout rate was 20% (3 of 15). Adverse effects were not reported in the study. CONCLUSION: Our research demonstrated that further evaluation of the effectiveness of electroacupuncture versus sham electroacupuncture was feasible and safe for patients with KOA. Whether or not the electroacupuncture can improve the physical functions of knee joint, expand the knee range of motion, and increase the extensor and flexor muscle strength more significantly than sham electroacupuncture, future studies can be designed with larger sample size, randomization design and less biases. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of art therapy on cancer patients' quality of life and physical and psychological symptoms. METHODS: The databases PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, Clinical Trial.gov, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang and the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM) were searched from their inception up to 20 August 2019. Trials examining the effects of art therapy on physical and psychological symptoms and quality of life versus a control group were included. The methodological quality of the included randomised controlled trials was assessed using the risk of bias tool of Cochrane Handbook. Meanwhile, the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale (NOS) was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the non-randomised studies. RESULTS: Twelve studies involving 587 cancer patients were included. The results revealed that art therapy significantly reduced anxiety symptoms (standard mean difference [SMD] = -0.46, 95% confidence interval [CI] [-0.90, 0.02], p = .04), depression symptoms (SMD = -0.47, 95% CI [-0.72, 0.21], p < .01), and fatigue (SMD = -0.38, 95% CI [-0.68, -0.09], p = .01) in cancer patients. Art therapy also significantly improved the quality of life of cancer patients (SMD = 0.43, 95% CI [0.18, 0.68], p < .01). CONCLUSIONS: Art therapy had a positive effect on quality of life and symptoms in cancer patients and can be used as a complementary treatment for cancer patients.

OBJECTIVES: The identification of gene mutations enables more appropriate genetic counseling and proper medical management for EVA patients. The purpose of this study was to validate the accuracy and sensitivity of our method for comprehensive mutation detection in EVA, and summarize these data to explore a more accurate and convenient genetic diagnosis method. METHODS: A multiplex PCR sequencing panel was designed to capture the exons of three known EVA-associated genes (SLC26A4, KCNJ10, and FOXI1), and NGS was conducted in 17 Chinese families with EVA. RESULTS: A total of 16 SLC26A4 variants were found in 21 probands with bilateral EVA, including three novel variants (c.416G>A, c.823G>A and c.1027G>C), which were not reported in the dbSNP, gnomAD database, and ClinVar databases. One patient carried a FOXI1 variant (heterozygous, c.214C>A) and one patient carried a KCNJ10 variant (heterozygous, c.1054C>A), both of which were novel variants. Biallelic potential pathogenic variants were detected in 21/21patient samples, leading to a purported diagnostic rate of 100%. All results were verified by Sanger sequencing. CONCLUSION: This result supplemented the mutation spectrum of EVA, and supports that combined multiple PCR-targeted enrichment, and NGS is a valuable molecular diagnostic tool for EVA, and is suitable for clinical application.

OBJECTIVES: Consumption of fish/seafood is clearly linked to higher mercury levels in human tissue samples. However, correlations between methylmercury (MeHg) intakes calculated from dietary surveys and mercury body burdens are usually weak and can vary across populations. Different factors may affect MeHg absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion, including co-exposures to phytochemicals and antibiotics, which were shown to affect mercury body burdens in rodents. Based on the observation that rat pups developmentally exposed to MeHg and a Rhododendron tomentosum extract (Labrador Tea) presented significantly higher blood mercury levels at weaning compared to pups exposed to MeHg alone, the modulation of MeHg toxicokinetics by Labrador Tea was further investigated in adult rats. RESULTS: Total mercury levels were quantified in the blood, liver, kidney and feces of adult male rats exposed to MeHg (1.2 mg/kg bodyweight/day, for 3 weeks) administered either alone or in combination with Labrador Tea (100 mg/kg bodyweight/day) or with an antibiotics cocktail (to inhibit MeHg demethylation by gut bacteria). While the reduced fecal excretion and higher blood mercury levels expected from antibiotics-treated rats were observed, mercury levels in samples from Labrador Tea-treated rats were not significantly different from those measured in samples from rats exposed to MeHg alone.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is a prominent cause of death among women worldwide. Recent studies have demonstrated that artemisinin (ART) displays anti-tumor activity. Using a mouse breast cancer model, we investigated the effects of ART in vitro and in vivo to determine how it influences the anti-tumor immune response. METHODS: We measured the proliferation and apoptosis of 4T1 cells in vitro after ART treatment by MTT assay and FACS. To examine the effects of ART in vivo, tumor volumes and survival rates were measured in 4T1 tumor-bearing mice. FACS was used to determine the frequencies of Tregs, MDSCs, CD4+ IFN-γ+ T cells, and CTLs in the tumors and spleens of the mice. mRNA levels of the transcription factors T-bet and FOXP3 and cytokines IFN-γ, TNF-α, TGF-ß, and IL-10 were also determined by real-time RT-PCR. ELISA was used to measure TGF-ß protein levels in the cell culture supernatants. RESULTS: ART supplementation significantly increased 4T1 cell apoptosis and decreased TGF-ß levels in vitro. ART also impeded tumor growth in 4T1 TB mice and extended their survival. MDSC and Treg frequencies significantly decreased in the 4T1 TB mice after ART treatment while CD4+ IFN-γ+ T cells and CTLs significantly increased. ART significantly increased T-bet, IFN-γ, and TNF-α mRNA levels within the tumor and significantly decreased TGF-ß mRNA levels. CONCLUSION: ART supplementation hindered 4T1 tumor growth in vivo by promoting T cell activation and quelling immunosuppression from Tregs and MDSCs in the tumor.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis and treatment of small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) play a vital role in the prognosis of patients with HCC. The purpose of our study was to evaluate angio-computed tomography (angio-CT)-guided immediate lipiodol CT (a CT scan performed immediately after transarterial chemoembolization [TACE]) in the diagnosis of potential HCCs ≤1 cm in diameter. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed 31 patients diagnosed with HCCs after routine imaging (contrast-enhanced CT or magnetic resonance imaging) or pathologic examinations with undefined or undetermined tumor lesions (diameter ≤1 cm) from February 2016 to September 2016. After TACE guided by digital subtraction angiography of the angio-CT system, potential HCC lesions with a diameter ≤1 cm were diagnosed by immediate lipiodol CT. The number of well-demarcated lesions was recorded to calculate the true positive rate. The correlation between the number of small HCCs detected by immediate lipiodol CT and the size of HCC lesions (diameter >1 cm) diagnosed preoperatively was analyzed 1 month after TACE. A paired t-test was used to analyze differences in liver function. Pearson analysis was used to analyze correlation. Chi-square test was used to compare the rates. RESULTS: Fifty-eight lesions were detected on preoperative routine imaging examinations in 31 patients including 15 lesions with a diameter ≤1 cm. Ninety-one lesions were detected on immediate lipiodol CT, of which 48 had a diameter ≤1 cm. After 1 month, CT showed that 45 lesions had lipiodol deposition and three lesions had lipiodol clearance. Correlation analysis showed that the number of small HCCs detected by lipiodol CT was positively correlated with the size of HCC lesions diagnosed by conventional imaging examination (R2 = 0.54, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Immediate lipiodol CT may be a useful tool in the diagnosis of potential HCC lesions with a diameter of ≤1 cm.

Phosphorus (P) recovery from waste streams is attracting more attention due to the twin problems of aquatic eutrophication and global phosphorus scarcity. Layered double hydroxide mineral materials are promising phosphate adsorbents due to their excellent anion-exchange abilities and large surface area. In this study, the adsorption isotherms estimated the saturation capacity of calcined layered double hydroxide (LDH) nano-composites for phosphate as 100.7 mg-P/g-adsorbent. Ion exchange is proposed as the major mechanism in the sorption process. The commonly utilized desorption method via sodium hydroxide was found to cause recrystallization of LDH particles in increased crystal size based on the dissolution-reprecipitation (D-R) mechanism. Ammonia solution was used to desorb P from LDH adsorbent. However, struvite crystallization occurred during the desorption process because struvite has a higher precipitation tendency than LDH with sufficient NH4+ ions. The comparison of P leaching behavior among P-adsorbed LDH, ammonia-treated LDH, and pure struvite samples demonstrates that ammonia desorption probably weakened the interaction between phosphate species and LDH cationic layers, thus enhancing the bioavailability of P in LDH adsorbents. The ammonia-treated LDH has a high potential to serve like struvite as a P slow-releasing fertilizer.

The objective of this study is to evaluate possible prognostic factors of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) treated with adjuvant hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) using univariate and multivariate analyses. From January 2008 to October 2016, records of 178 ISSNHL patients treated with auxiliary hyperbaric oxygen therapy were reviewed to assess hearing recovery and evaluate associated prognostic factors (gender, age, localization, initial hearing threshold, presence of tinnitus, vertigo, ear fullness, hypertension, diabetes, onset of HBOT, number of HBOT, and audiogram), by using univariate and multivariate analyses. The overall recovery rate was 37.1%, including complete recovery (19.7%) and partial recovery (17.4%). According to multivariate analysis, later onset of HBOT and higher initial hearing threshold were associated with a poor prognosis in ISSNHL patients treated with HBOT. HBOT is a safe and beneficial adjuvant therapy for ISSNHL patients. 20 sessions of HBOT is possibly enough to show its therapeutic effect. Earlier HBOT onset and lower initial hearing threshold is associated with favorable hearing recovery.

Wound therapy remains a clinical challenge due to the complexity of healing pathology and high demand of achieving functional and aesthetically satisfactory scars. Newly formed blood vessels are essential for tissue repair since they can support cells at the wound site with nutrition and oxygen. In this study, we investigated the effects of Asperosaponin VI (ASA VI) isolated from a traditional Chinese medicine, the root of Dipsacus asper Wall, in promoting angiogenesis, as well as its function in wound therapeutics. Treatment of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) with ASA VI (20-80 µg/mL) dose-dependently promoted the proliferation, migration and enhanced their angiogenic ability in vitro, which were associated with the up-regulated HIF-1α/VEGF signaling. Full-thickness cutaneous wound model rats were injected with ASA VI (20 mg·kg-1·d-1, iv) for 21 d. Administration of ASA VI significantly promoted the cutaneous wound healing, and more blood vessels were observed in the regenerated tissue. Due to rapid vascularization, the cellular proliferation status, granulation tissue formation, collagen matrix deposition and remodeling processes were all accelerated, resulting in efficient wound healing. In summary, ASA VI promotes angiogenesis of HUVECs in vitro via up-regulating the HIF-1α/VEGF pathway, and efficiently enhances the vascularization in regenerated tissue and facilitates wound healing in vivo. The results reveal that ASA VI is a potential therapeutic for vessel injury-related wounds.
