RESUMEN

Plants and natural compounds have been widely recognized to have potential for the prevention of cancer progression and as complementary or standalone treatments for cancer patients. The major benefits of natural compounds are their reduced toxicity compared to more aggressive and widely utilized cancer treatment approaches. Preclinical studies have led to the discovery of a number of natural anticancer compounds, including preparations of Vitex negundo L., green tea, mandarin peel oil, ursolic acid, curcumin and resveratrol. Although the in vitro data highlights the potential of these natural alternatives, their benefits in clinical cancer treatment remain less conclusive. In this review, we will discuss some of the recent advances in natural anticancer treatment discovery for the four most prominent global cancers, namely, breast, lung, prostate and skin metastases. As the exploration of natural therapeutics continues to expand, these substances have the potential to be utilized as preventative strategies and complimentary therapeutics. In some cases, they may have sufficient anti-tumor and anti-carcinogenic properties to function as standalone cancer treatments.

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To assess the safety and therapeutic effect of morcellator in transurethral bipolar plasmakinetic anatomical enucleation (TUPKAEP) of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The clinical data of 47 patients with BPH receiving TUPKAEP between January and July, 2015 were analyzed. During the operation, morcellator was used to smash the enucleated BPH which was aspirated with subatmospheric pressure in 29 cases, and the tissue was smashed with bipolar electrosurgical loop slicing from top to bottom and aspirated by ellic suction in 18 cases.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>s The procedures were completed successfully in all the 47 cases. The time used for adenoma dissociation was 2.24∓1.09 with morcellator at the speed of 18.43∓6.01 g/min, and was 17.19∓11.74 min with bipolar electrosurgical loop at the speed of 1.91∓0.65 g/min; the mean total operation time was significantly shorter in morcellator group (28.13∓14.71 vs 43.22∓25.39 min). The 2 groups showed no significant difference in postoperative continuous bladder irrigation time, postoperative indwelling time of urinary catheter or postoperative hospital stay.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>s Morcellator is safe and feasible for application in TUPKAEP and helps to shorten the operation time.</p>

BACKGROUND: Osthole, the main bioactive compounds isolated from the traditional Chinese medical herb broad Cnidium monnieri (L.) cusson, has been shown to exert spectrum of pharmacologic activities. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential neuroprotective effects of osthole against spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Osthole was administrated at the concentration of 0.1, 1, 10, 50, or 200 mg/kg (intraperitoneally) 1 h before spinal cord ischemia. The effects on spinal cord injury were measured by spinal cord water content, infarct volume, hematoxylin and eosin staining, and neurologic assessment. Mitochondria were purified from injured spinal cord tissue to determine mitochondrial function. RESULTS: We found that treatment with osthole (10 and 50 mg/kg) significantly decreased spinal cord water content and infarct volume, preserved normal motor neurons, and improved neurologic functions. These protective effects can be also observed even if the treatment was delayed to 4 h after reperfusion. Osthole treatment preserved mitochondrial membrane potential level, reduced reactive oxygen species production, increased adenosine triphosphate generation, and inhibited cytochrome c release in mitochondrial samples. Moreover, osthole increased mitochondria respiratory chain complex activities in spinal cord tissue, with no effect on mitochondrial DNA content and the expression of mitochondrial-specific transcription factors. CONCLUSIONS: All these findings demonstrate the neuroprotective effect of osthole in spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury model and suggest that oshtole-induced neuroprotection was mediated by mitochondrial biogenesis-independent inhibition of mitochondrial dysfunction.

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the effect of acupuncture serum on Ca2+ content in the cultured nervous cells of hippocampus after ischemia-reperfusion, so as to probe into humoral factors in acupuncture treatment.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The neurons of the hippocampus from the new born rats were cultured for 9-11 days. Fluorescein-molecular probe Fluo-3 AM was used for staining of intracellular Ca2+. Fluorescent levels in the nervous cells cultured with the serum of the normal rats or the rats given electroacupuncture at "Baihui" (GV 20), "Zusanli" (ST 36), "Quchi" (LI 11) and "Sanyinjiao" (SP 6) for 2 weeks were determined by using a laser confocal microscope.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>After the normal serum was added, the intracellular Ca2+ fluorescent levels increased to 697 +/- 113 from 461 +/- 96, while after acupuncture serum was added, the Ca2+ fluorescent levels decreased to 584 +/- 103 from 673 +/- 108, indicating that after addition of acupuncture serum, the increased intracellular Ca2+ content could be decreased.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>There are some active substances in acupuncture serum which can obviously decrease intracellular Ca2+ content after ischemia-reperfusion, so as to provide a direct evidence for role of humoral factor in acupuncture treatment.</p>

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the changes in the numbers of blood vessels and mast cells, which is relative to blood microcirculation in skin, during Qingpeng plaster (ZANG medicine) being applied to the skin surface of nude mice.</p><p><b>METHOD</b>Fifteen healthy adult nude mice were divided into Qingpeng plaster group and the control group. The sites of skin tissues stuck with the plaster or with control plaster were selected after 7 days treated, and then all the slices stained and observed.</p><p><b>RESULT</b>The numbers of the vessels and the mast cells increased in the dermal tissue of Qingpeng paster group. Although there were a few dilated blood vessels in the control group, but the numbers of the vessels and the mast cells were obviously less than those of the Qingpeng plaster group. Statistical analysis showed that there was a significant difference (P < 0.001) between tow groups.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Qingpeng plaster can cause obvious vascular dilatation and promot mast cells aggregation in the Qingpeng plaster stuck parts of the skin tissue.</p>

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore whether humoral factors play a role in the mechanisms of acupuncture.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Primary culture of myocardial cells of neonatal rats were carried out. Five days later, they were labeled by fluorescent molecular probe Fluo-3AM. Changes of Ca2+ contents in the cultured myocardial cells after addition of the normal rat serum or acupuncture-serum of the rat who received acupuncture at "Neiguan" (PC 6) and Jianshi (PC 5), were dynamically observed by a confocal laser scanning microscopy.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>After addition of normal serum of the rat, the intracellular Ca2+ level increased to a certain degree, and then gradually tended to stability, which was significantly decreased by addition of the acupuncture-serum (P < 0.01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The serum of the rat who received acupuncture at acupoints can decrease the Ca2+ level in cultured myocardial cells, which provides a direct evidence for serum factors involving in acupuncture mechanism.</p>
