RESUMEN

Sustainable strategies to improve the water resistance of cellulose paper are actively sought. In this work, polymeric microspheres (PMs), prepared through emulsion polymerization of cellulose nanofibers stabilized rubber seed oil-derived monomer, were investigated as coatings on corrugated medium paper (CMP). After infiltrating porous paper with PMs, the water-resistant corrugated papers (WRCPn) with enhanced mechanical properties were obtained. When 30 wt% PMs were introduced, WRCP30 turned out to be highly compacted with an increased water contact angle of 106.3° and a low water vapor transmission rate of 81 g/(m2 d) at 23 °C. Meanwhile, the tensile strength of WRCP30 increased to 22.2 MPa, a 4-fold increase from CMP. When tested in a well-hydrated state, 71% of its mechanical strength in the dry state was maintained. Even with a low content of 10 wt% PMs, WRCP10 also exhibited stable tensile strength and water wettability during the cyclic soaking-drying process. Thus, the plant oil based sustainable emulsion polymers provide a convenient route for enhancing the overall performance of cellulose paper.

Chuanxiong Rhizoma is a well-known Sichuan-specific herbal medicine. Its original plant, Ligusticum chuanxiong, has been cultivated asexually for a long time. L. chuanxiong has sexual reproductive disorders, which restricts its germplasm innovation. However, there is little research on the reproductive system of L. chuanxiong. This study is based on a comparative anatomical research approach, using morphological dissection, paraffin sectioning, staining and compression, and combined with scanning electron microscopy technology, to observe and compare the flowers, fruits, and seeds at various stages of reproductive growth of L. chuanxiong and its wild relative L. sinense. The results showed that the meiosis of pollen mother cells is abnormal in L. chuanxiong anthers, and the size and number of microspores are uneven and inconsistent in the tetrad stage. tapetum cells are not completely degenerated during anther development. During the pollen ripening stage, there are fine cracks in the anther wall, while most anthers could not release pollen normally. The surface of mature pollen grains is concave and partially deformed, and the pollens are all inactive and cannot germinate in vitro. The starch, polysaccharides, and lipids in the pollen were insufficient. The filaments of L. chuanxiong are short at the flowering stage and recurved downward. Double-hanging fruits were observed in the fruiting stage, being wrinkled; with shriveled seeds. Compared with L. sinense at the same stage, the anthers of L. sinense developed normally, and the pollen grains are vigorous and can germinate in vitro. The double-hanging fruits of L. sinense are full and normal; at the flowering period, the filaments are long and erect, significantly higher than the stigma. Mature blastocysts are visible in the ovary of both L. chuanxiong and L. sinense, and there is no significant difference in stigmas. The conclusion is that during the development of L. chuanxiong stamens, the meiosis of pollen mother cells is abnormal, and tetrad, tapetum, filament and other pollen structures develop abnormally. L. chuanxiong has the characteristic of male infertility, which is an important reason for its sexual reproductive disorders.

Multi-modal combination therapy is regarded as a promising approach to cancer treatment. Combining chemotherapy and phototherapy is an essential multi-modal combination therapy endeavor. Ivermectin (IVM) is a potent antiparasitic agent identified as having potential antitumor properties. However, the fact that it induces protective autophagy while killing tumor cells poses a challenge to its further application. IR780 iodide (IR780) is a near-infrared (NIR) dye with outstanding photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) effects. However, the hydrophobicity, instability, and low tumor uptake of IR780 limit its clinical applications. Here, we have structurally modified IR780 with hydroxychloroquine, an autophagy inhibitor, to synthesize a novel compound H780. H780 and IVM can form H780-IVM nanoparticles (H-I NPs) via self-assembly. Using hyaluronic acid (HA) to modify the H-I NPs, a novel nano-delivery system HA/H780-IVM nanoparticles (HA/H-I NPs) was synthesized for chemotherapy-phototherapy of colorectal cancer (CRC). Under NIR laser irradiation, HA/H-I NPs effectively overcame the limitations of IR780 and IVM and exhibited potent cytotoxicity. In vitro and in vivo experiment results showed that HA/H-I NPs exhibited excellent anti-CRC effects. Therefore, our study provides a novel strategy for CRC treatment that could enhance chemo-phototherapy by modulating autophagy.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Leonurus japonicus Houtt. (Labiatae), commonly known as Chinese motherwort, is a herbaceous flowering plant that is native to Asia. It is widely acknowledged in traditional medicine for its diuretic, hypoglycemic, antiepileptic properties and neuroprotection. Currently, Leonurus japonicus (Leo) is included in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) recognizes Leo for its myriad pharmacological attributes, but its efficacy against ICH-induced neuronal apoptosis is unclear. AIMS OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to identify the potential targets and regulatory mechanisms of Leo in alleviating neuronal apoptosis after ICH. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study employed network pharmacology, UPLC-Q-TOF-MS technique, molecular docking, pharmacodynamic studies, western blotting, and immunofluorescence techniques to explore its potential mechanisms. RESULTS: Leo was found to assist hematoma absorption, thus improving the neurological outlook in an ICH mouse model. Importantly, molecular docking highlighted JAK as Leo's potential therapeutic target in ICH scenarios. Further experimental evidence demonstrated that Leo adjusts JAK1 and STAT1 phosphorylation, curbing Bax while augmenting Bcl-2 expression. CONCLUSION: Leo showcases potential in mitigating neuronal apoptosis post-ICH, predominantly via the JAK/STAT mechanism.

Superbug infections and transmission have become major challenges in the contemporary medical field. The development of novel antibacterial strategies to efficiently treat bacterial infections and conquer the problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is extremely important. In this paper, a bimetallic CuCo-doped nitrogen-carbon nanozyme-functionalized hydrogel (CuCo/NC-HG) has been successfully constructed. It exhibits photoresponsive-enhanced enzymatic effects under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation (808 nm) with strong peroxidase (POD)-like and oxidase (OXD)-like activities. Upon NIR irradiation, CuCo/NC-HG possesses photodynamic activity for producing singlet oxygen(1O2), and it also has a high photothermal conversion effect, which not only facilitates the elimination of bacteria but also improves the efficiency of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and accelerates the consumption of GSH. CuCo/NC-HG shows a lower hemolytic rate and better cytocompatibility than CuCo/NC and possesses a positive charge and macroporous skeleton for restricting negatively charged bacteria in the range of ROS destruction, strengthening the antibacterial efficiency. Comparatively, CuCo/NC and CuCo/NC-HG have stronger bactericidal ability against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and ampicillin-resistant Escherichia coli (AmprE. coli) through destroying the cell membranes with a negligible occurrence of AMR. More importantly, CuCo/NC-HG plus NIR irradiation can exhibit satisfactory bactericidal performance in the absence of H2O2, avoiding the toxicity from high-concentration H2O2. In vivo evaluation has been conducted using a mouse wound infection model and histological analyses, and the results show that CuCo/NC-HG upon NIR irradiation can efficiently suppress bacterial infections and promote wound healing, without causing inflammation and tissue adhesions.

Dry eye (DE) is a prevalent ocular surface disease in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). However, current medications are ineffective against decreased sensation on the ocular surface. While electroacupuncture (EA) effectively alleviates decreased sensation on ocular surface of DE in patients with T2DM, the neuroprotective mechanism remains unclear. This study explored the pathogenesis and therapeutic targets of T2DM-associated DE through bioinformatics analysis. It further investigated the underlying mechanism by which EA improves decreased sensation on the ocular surface of DE in rats with T2DM. Bioinformatic analysis was applied to annotate the potential pathogenesis of T2DM DE. T2DM and DE was induced in male rats. Following treatment with EA and fluorometholone, comprehensive metrics were assessed. Additionally, the expression patterns of key markers were studied. Key targets such as NLRP3, Caspase-1, and NOD-like receptor signaling may be involved in the pathogenesis of T2DM DE. EA treatment improved ocular measures. Furthermore, EA potently downregulated P2X7R, NLRP3, apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD (ASC), and Caspase-1 expression within the trigeminal ganglion and spinal trigeminal nucleus caudalis. Targeted P2X7R antagonist (A-438079) and agonist (BzATP) employed as controls to decipher the biochemistry of the therapeutic effects of EA showed an anti-inflammatory effect with A-438079, while BzATP blocked the anti-inflammatory effect of EA. EA relieved DE symptoms and attenuated inflammatory damage to sensory nerve pathways in T2DM rats with DE. These findings suggest a crucial role of EA inhibition of the P2X7R-NLRP3 inflammatory cascade to provide these benefits.

In this work, positively charged N-carbazoleacetic acid decorated CuxO nanoparticles (CuxO-CAA NPs) as novel biocompatible nanozymes have been successfully prepared through a one-step hydrothermal method. CuxO-CAA can serve as a self-cascading platform through effective GSH-OXD-like and POD-like activities, and the former can induce continuous generation of H2O2 through the catalytic oxidation of overexpressed GSH in the bacterial infection microenvironment, which in turn acts as a substrate for the latter to yield ˙OH via Fenton-like reaction, without introducing exogenous H2O2. Upon NIR irradiation, CuxO-CAA NPs possess a high photothermal conversion effect, which can further improve the enzymatic activity for increasing the production rate of H2O2 and ˙OH. Besides, the photodynamic performance of CuxO-CAA NPs can produce 1O2. The generated ROS and hyperthermia have synergetic effects on bacterial mortality. More importantly, CuxO-CAA NPs are more stable and biosafe than Cu2O, and can generate electrostatic adsorption with negatively charged bacterial cell membranes and accelerate bacterial death. Antibacterial results demonstrate that CuxO-CAA NPs are lethal against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and ampicillin-resistant Escherichia coli (AREC) through destroying the bacterial membrane and disrupting the bacterial biofilm formation. MRSA-infected animal wound models show that CuxO-CAA NPs can efficiently promote wound healing without causing toxicity to the organism.

BACKGROUND: Dubin-Johnson syndrome (DJS) is a rare autosomal recessive liver disorder, characterized by conjugated hyperbilirubinemia. This case report investigates the clinical characteristics and longitudinal outcomes of a neonate diagnosed with DJS. METHODS: A newborn presented with elevated bilirubin levels and abnormal liver enzyme readings. Comprehensive genetic evaluation was conducted, which included peripheral blood sample collection from the infant and both parents after obtaining informed consent and high-throughput trio exome sequencing was performed. The genetic analysis revealed 2 significant mutations in the ABCC2 gene on chromosome 10: the insertion mutation c.4237(exon30)_c.4238(exon30)ins CT, inherited from the father, and the missense mutation c.517(exon5)G > A, inherited from the mother. Both mutations were classified as pathogenic according to the ACMG 2015 guidelines, indicating a compound heterozygous inheritance pattern. The patient's treatment regimen included phototherapy, which was initiated to address her jaundice upon admission. To support liver function and regulate gut activity, oral ursodeoxycholic acid (20 mg/kg/dose, twice a day) and probiotics were administered. Additionally, a postdischarge medication plan involving a low-dose regimen of phenobarbital (3.5 mg/kg/dose, twice a day) was implemented for 2 weeks. RESULTS: During a 2-year follow-up after discharge, the infant's bilirubin levels significantly decreased, and liver enzymes, including GGT, progressively normalized. CONCLUSION: This case report enhances the understanding of DJS in neonates by emphasizing the clinical ramifications of compound heterozygous mutations within the ABCC2 gene and documenting the evolution of the disease. The gradual normalization of liver function tests suggests potential compensatory mechanisms in response to the genetic abnormalities in neonates with DJS. The correlation between the patient's genetic profile of compound heterozygosity and her milder clinical phenotype warrants attention, suggesting that this specific genetic configuration may be associated with less severe manifestations of the disease. The necessity for long-term follow-up is highlighted, recognizing that intercurrent stress conditions could influence the hepatic profile and potentially exacerbate symptoms. Such sustained observation is crucial to further delineate the genomic and clinical landscape of DJS, offering opportunities to refine prognostic and therapeutic approaches.

In the present study, we aimed to elucidate the effects of stevia extract on production performance, serum immune indexes, intestinal structure, and cecum microbial structure. We randomly divided eight hundred 46-wk-old Roman hens into 5 groups, with 8 replicates in each group and 20 chickens in each replicate. The control group was fed a basal diet, whereas the 4 experimental groups were fed 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg stevia extracts. The study period was 24 wk. The addition of different concentrations of the stevia extract to the diet resulted in significant secondary changes in the egg production rate at 1 to 12 wk (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the addition of 50 and 100 mg/kg stevia extract to the diet significantly increased serum IgM and IgG levels in laying hens (P < 0.05) but linearly decreased serum IL-1ß levels (P < 0.05). Serum T-SOD activity linearly increased (P = 0.057); however, serum biochemical indexes showed no significant differences. Stevia extract tended to increase the ratio of the duodenal villi height to the depth of the crypt (P = 0.067), with no obvious lesions in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. In addition, stevia extract increased the relative abundance of species at the phylum level, with the abundance of Bacteroides and Firmicutes exhibiting significant secondary changes (P < 0.05). The ACE and Chao1 indexes suggested that stevia extract addition significantly increased the alpha diversity of cecum microorganisms in laying hens. Furthermore, NMDS analysis based on operational taxonomic units revealed that stevia extract addition increased the beta diversity of cecum microorganisms in laying hens. Adding a certain amount of stevia extract to feed can improve the production performance, immune ability, and intestinal health of laying hens to some extent, and we recommend an effective level of 200mg/kg of stevia extract for laying hen diets.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination is a serious challenge in agricultural soils worldwide, resulting in Cd entering the food chain mainly through plant-based food and threatening human health. Minimizing Cd bioaccumulation in wheat is an important way to prevent Cd hazards to humans. Hydroponic and pot experiments were conducted to comprehensively evaluate the effects of zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) on Cd uptake, translocation, subcellular distribution, cellular ultrastructure, and gene expression in two wheat genotypes that differ in grain Zn accumulation. Results showed that high-dose nZnO significantly reduced root Cd concentration (52.44%∼56.85%) in two wheats, in contrast to ZnSO4. The S216 exhibited higher tolerance to Cd compared to Z797. Importantly, Zn supplementation enhanced Cd sequestration into vacuoles and binding to cell walls, which conferred stability to ultracellular structures and photosynthetic apparatus. Down-regulation of influx transporter (TaHMA2 and TaLCT1) and up-regulation of efflux transporters (TaTM20 and TaHMA3) in Z797 might contribute to Zn-dependent alleviation of Cd toxicity and enhance its Cd tolerance. Down-regulation of ZIP transporters (TaZIP3, -5, and -7) might contribute to an increase in root Zn concentration and inhibit Cd absorption. Additionally, soil Zn provided an effective strategy for the reduction of grain Cd concentrations in both wheats, with a reduction of 26%∼32% (high ZnSO4) and 11%∼67% (high nZnO), respectively. Collectively, these findings provide new insights and perspectives on the mechanisms of Cd mitigation in wheats with different Zn fertilizers and demonstrate that the effect of nZnO in mitigating Cd stress is greater than that of ZnSO4 fertilizers.

Purpose: This study aimed to examine electroacupuncture's influence on ocular pain and its potential modulation of the TNF-ɑ mediated ERK1/2/P2X3R signaling pathway in dry eye-induced rat models. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats with induced dry eye, achieved through extraorbital lacrimal gland removal, were treated with electroacupuncture. Comprehensive metrics such as the corneal mechanical perception threshold, palpebral fissure height, eyeblink frequency, eye wiping duration, behavioral changes in the open field test, and the forced swimming test were employed. Additionally, morphological changes in microglia and neurons were observed. Expression patterns of key markers, TNF-ɑ, TNFR1, p-ERK1/2, and P2X3R, in the trigeminal ganglion (TG) and spinal trigeminal nucleus caudalis (SpVc) regions, were studied with etanercept serving as a control to decipher the biochemistry of electroacupuncture's therapeutic effects. Results: Electroacupuncture treatment demonstrated a notable decrease in the corneal mechanical perception threshold, improvement in palpebral fissure height, and significant reductions in both eyeblink frequency and eye wiping duration. Moreover, it exhibited a promising role in anxiety alleviation. Notably, the technique effectively diminished ocular pain by curbing microglial and neuronal activation in the TG and SpVc regions. Furthermore, it potently downregulated TNF-ɑ, TNFR1, p-ERK1/2, and P2X3R expression within these regions. Conclusion: Electroacupuncture attenuated damage to sensory nerve pathways, reduced pain, and eased anxiety in dry eye-afflicted rats. The findings suggest a crucial role of TNF-ɑ mediated ERK1/2/P2X3R signaling pathway inhibition by electroacupuncture in these benefits.

The prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is progressively rising each year, emphasizing the significance of implementing rational dietary interventions for disease prevention. Oats, being a staple agricultural product, are abundant in protein content. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects and underlying mechanisms of oat peptides (OPs) in a mouse model of acute colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium salt (DSS) and a Caco-2 cell model. The findings demonstrated that intervention with OPs effectively mitigated the symptoms associated with DSS-induced colitis. The physicochemical characterization analysis demonstrated that the molecular weight of the OPs was predominantly below 5 kDa, with a predominant composition of 266 peptides. This study provides further evidence of the regulatory impact of OPs on the Keap1-Nrf2 signaling axis and elucidates the potential role of WGVGVRAERDA as the primary bioactive peptide responsible for the functional effects of OPs. Ultimately, the results of this investigation demonstrate that OPs effectively mitigate DSS-induced colitis by preserving the integrity of the intestinal barrier and modulating the Keap1-Nrf2 axis. Consequently, these findings establish a theoretical foundation for the utilization of OPs as dietary supplements to prevent the onset of IBD.

Background: Using statistical methods to analyze and summarize the research data of the inclusion criteria, to provide a quantitative average effect size to interpret the influence of mindfulness yoga exercise on patients with different depressive symptoms, explain the therapeutic effect of mindfulness yoga therapy on depression and its possible mechanism of action, and provide new ideas for the clinical treatment of patients with depression. Method: Review Manage 5.4 software was used to comprehensively evaluate the effect of yoga exercise on depression interventions to provide a reference for improving mental health. CNKI, PubMed, Web of science, EBSCO were searched for all case-control research articles on yoga for depression from 2000 to 2022. After screening, data extraction and quality evaluation of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) by inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 22 studies with 2,216 patients were included, including 1,101 in the yoga intervention group and 1,115 in the control group. Results: The results showed a large heterogeneity in the literature on the effect of yoga exercise on depression, with a combined total effect size [SMD = -1.53, 95%CI (-1.96, -1.10), p < 0.00001]. Conclusion: Mindfulness yoga exercise is effective in preventing and treating depression and improving mental health, and may be considered as a non-medical, low-cost intervention as an adjunct to pharmacological treatment.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the clinical efficacy and safety of acupuncture and sodium hyaluronate eye drop in the treatment of aqueous deficiency dry eye. METHODS: A total of 60 patients (120 eyes) with aqueous deficiency dry eye were randomly divided into an observation group (30 cases, 1 case dropped out) and a control group (30 cases, 1 case dropped out). In the control group, sodium hyaluronate eye drop were used, one drop at a time, 4 times a day, for 14 consecutive days. In the observation group, acupuncture was applied at bilateral Shangjingming (Extra), Cuanzhu (BL 2), Sizhukong (TE 23), Taiyang (EX-HN 5), and Tongziliao (GB 1) , once a day, treatment for 6 days with the interval of 1 day was required, for 14 consecutive days. The tear meniscus height (TMH), Schirmer Ⅰ test (SⅠT), ocular surface disease index (OSDI) score, non-invasive tear break-up time (NIBUT), and corneal fluorescein sodium staining (FLS) score were compared between the two groups before and after treatment, and the safety of the treatment of the two groups was observed. RESULTS: Compared with those before treatment, after treatment, TMH, SⅠT and NIBUT were increased (P<0.01, P<0.05), and FLS scores were decreased (P<0.01) in the two groups; the score of OSDI was reduced (P<0.01) in the observation group. After treatment, in the observation group, TMH and SⅠT were higher than those in the control group (P<0.01), and the score of OSDI was lower than that in the control group (P<0.01). No adverse reactions and adverse events were observed in the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture and sodium hyaluronate eye drop can both effectively treat aqueous deficiency dry eye, acupuncture has obvious advantages in improving TMH and basic tear secretion, and reducing the subjective symptoms of patients. Acupuncture for dry eye is safe.

The academic thoughts of professor GAO Wei-bin regarding the use of electroacupuncture in the treatment of dry eye are introduced. Professor GAO believes that the occurrence of dry eye is mainly related to the stagnation of qi and blood in the eye meridians, leading to inadequate nourishment of the eyes. The acupuncture treatment principle focuses on promoting blood circulation, clearing and benefiting the eye orifices. By integrating traditional acupuncture theory with modern neuroanatomy, the treatment approach centers on stimulating the lacrimal gland, emphasizing the importance of promoting, addressing symptoms as a priority, and considering both the root cause and symptoms.The precise acupoint selection is emphasized. Acupoints of periocular region, such as Taiyang (EX-HN 5) and Leixian point are selected along with Fengchi (GB 20) and Gongxue point to treat dry eye. Attention is also given to the use of electroacupuncture and the selection of its frequencies, emphasizing specific needling techniques based on the severity and classification of the disease.

This study constructed a nano-drug delivery system, A3@GMH, by co-delivering the stapled anoplin peptide(Ano-3, A3) with the light-harvesting material graphene oxide(GO), and evaluated its oncolytic immunotherapy effect on triple-negative breast cancer(TNBC). A3@GMH was prepared using an emulsion template method and its physicochemical properties were characterized. The in vivo and in vitro photothermal conversion abilities of A3@GMH were investigated using an infrared thermal imager. The oncoly-tic activity of A3@GMH against TNBC 4T1 cells was evaluated through cell counting kit-8(CCK-8), lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) release, live/dead cell staining, and super-resolution microscopy. The targeting properties of A3@GMH on 4T1 cells were assessed using a high-content imaging system and flow cytometry. In vitro and in vivo studies were conducted to investigate the antitumor mechanism of A3@GMH in combination with photothermal therapy(PTT) through inducing immunogenic cell death(ICD) in 4T1 cells. The results showed that the prepared A3@GMH exhibited distinct mesoporous and coated structures with an average particle size of(308.9±7.5) nm and a surface potential of(-6.79±0.58) mV. The encapsulation efficiency and drug loading of A3 were 23.9%±0.6% and 20.5%±0.5%, respectively. A3@GMH demonstrated excellent photothermal conversion ability and biological safety. A3@GMH actively mediated oncolytic features such as 4T1 cell lysis and LDH release, as well as ICD effects, and showed enhanced in vitro antitumor activity when combined with PTT. In vivo, A3@GMH efficiently induced ICD effects with two rounds of PTT, activated the host's antitumor immune response, and effectively suppressed tumor growth in 4T1 tumor-bearing mice, achieving an 88.9% tumor inhibition rate with no apparent toxic side effects. This study suggests that the combination of stapled anoplin peptide and PTT significantly enhances the oncolytic immunotherapy for TNBC and provides a basis for the innovative application of anti-tumor peptides derived from TCM in TNBC treatment.

OBJECTIVES: To observe the effect of acupuncture on the ocular surface symptoms and the protein expression of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) / cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)/protein kinase A (PKA) / aquaporin 5(AQP5) signaling pathway in lacrimal gland tissue of aqueous tear deficiency (ATD) type dry eye model, so as to investigate its mechanism underlying improvement of ATD. METHODS: British shorthair guinea pigs were randomly divided into blank control, model, acupuncture, sham-acupuncture and medication group, with 8 guinea pigs in each group. The ATD model was established by subcutaneous injection of scopolamine hydrobromide (0.6 mg/dose, 4 times/d for 10 days). For guinea pigs of the acupuncture group, filiform needles were inserted into bilateral "Jingming"(BL1), "Cuanzhu"(BL2), "Sizhukong"(TE23), "Taiyang"(EX-HN5), and "Tongziliao"(GB1) for 15 min. For guinea pigs of the sham-acupuncture group, a blunt filiform needle was used to repeatedly prick (not pierce) the skin of the same acupoints mentioned above. The treatment in the above two groups was conducted once daily for 14 days. The guinea pigs in the medication group received administration of sodium hyaluronate eye drops in both eyes, three times a day for 14 days. The objective tests of tear film break-up time (BUT), corneal fluorescein staining score (FLS) and phenol red thread (PRT) test were conducted before and after modeling and after the intervention. After the intervention, the lacrimal index (weight of lacrimal gland/body weight) was calculated. Histopathological changes of the lacrimal gland were observed after H.E. staining. The expression of AQP5 in the lacrimal gland were detected by immunofluorescence, and the contents of VIP and AQP5 in the lacrimal gland were measured by ELISA, the protein expression levels of VIP, cAMP, PKA, p-PKA and AQP5 in the lacrimal gland were detected by Western blot. RESULTS: In comparison with the blank control group, the PRT, BUT, lacrimal index, AQP5 immunoactivity, contents of VIP and AQP5, and protein expression levels of VIP, cAMP, PKA, p-PKA and AQP5 were significantly decreased(P<0.01, P<0.05), and FLS was obviously increased (P<0.01) in the model group . Compared to the model group, the PRT, BUT, lacrimal index, AQP5 immunoactivity, contents of VIP and AQP5, and expression levels of VIP and AQP5 in both acupuncture and medication groups, and the expression levels of cAMP, PKA, p-PKA in the acupuncture group were considerably increased (P<0.01, P<0.05), while the FLS was markedly decreased in both acupuncture and medication groups (P<0.01, P<0.05). Compared with the medication group, the acupuncture group had increased PRT (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture intervention is effective in reducing ocular surface damage and promoting tear secretion in guinea pigs with ATD, which may be related to its function in activating VIP/cAMP/PKA signaling, and promoting the expression of AQP5 in the lacrimal gland.

Corydalis yanhusuo W. T. Wang, also known as yanhusuo, yuanhu, yanhu and xuanhu, is one of the herb components of many Chinese Traditional Medicine prescriptions such as Jin Ling Zi San and Yuanhu-Zhitong priscription. C. yanhusuo was traditionally used to relieve pain and motivate blood and Qi circulation. Now there has been growing interest in pharmacological effects of alkaloids, the main bioactive components of C. yanhusuo. Eighty-four alkaloids isolated from C. yanhusuo are its important bioactive components and can be characterized into protoberberine alkaloids, aporphine alkaloids, opiate alkaloids and others and proper extraction or co-administration methods modulate their contents and efficacy. Alkaloids from C. yanhusuo have various pharmacological effects on the nervous system, cardiovascular system, cancer and others through multiple molecular mechanisms such as modulating neurotransmitters, ion channels, gut microbiota, HPA axis and signaling pathways and are potential treatments for many diseases. Plenty of novel drug delivery methods such as autologous red blood cells, self-microemulsifying drug delivery systems, nanoparticles and others have also been investigated to better exert the effects of alkaloids from C. yanhusuo. This review summarized the alkaloid components of C. yanhusuo, their pharmacological effects and mechanisms, and methods of drug delivery to lay a foundation for future investigations.

Fibrous wearable and implantable devices have emerged as a promising technology, offering a range of new solutions for minimally invasive monitoring of human health. Compared to traditional biomedical devices, fibers offer a possibility for a modular design compatible with large-scale manufacturing and a plethora of advantages including mechanical compliance, breathability, and biocompatibility. The new generation of fibrous biomedical devices can revolutionize easy-to-use and accessible health monitoring systems by serving as building blocks for most common wearables such as fabrics and clothes. Despite significant progress in the fabrication, materials, and application of fibrous biomedical devices, there is still a notable absence of a comprehensive and systematic review on the subject. This review paper provides an overview of recent advancements in the development of fibrous wearable and implantable electronics. We categorized these advancements into three main areas: manufacturing processes, platforms, and applications, outlining their respective merits and limitations. The paper concludes by discussing the outlook and challenges that lie ahead for fiber bioelectronics, providing a holistic view of its current stage of development.

The recurrence and metastasis of colorectal cancer (CRC) have been considered as a severe challenge in clinical treatment. Recent studies have demonstrated that matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and lactate can promote local tumor angiogenesis, recurrence, and metastasis. The expression of MMPs is highly dependent on energy metabolism, and lactate is considered an alternative energy source for tumor proliferation and metastasis. Therefore, using a rational approach, a photothermal-starvation therapy nanomodulator that can reduce energy metabolism to suppress CRC recurrence and metastasis is designed. To design a suitable nanomodulator, glucose oxidase (GOX), indocyanine green (IR820), and α-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid (CHC) into nanoparticles by a coassembly method are combined. The photothermal properties of IR820 provide the appropriate temperature and oxygen supply for the enzymatic reaction of GOX to promote intracellular glucose consumption. CHC inhibits the expression of monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1), the transporter of lactic acid into cells, and also reduces oxygen consumption and promotes the GOX reaction. Additionally, altering adenosine triphosphate synthesis to block heat shock proteins expression can be an effective means to prevent IR820-mediated photothermal therapy resistance. Thus, this dual photothermal-starvation therapy nanomodulator efficiently suppresses the recurrence and metastasis of CRC by depleting intracellular nutrients.
