Objective: Our aim was to perform a meta-analysis to compare the therapeutic effects of compound Xuanju capsules combined with hormone therapy vs hormone therapy alone in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)-related infertility. Methods: Electronic databases including PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Data and VIP database were manually searched. The quality of included studies was evaluated based on Cochrane Systematic Review standards, and the valid data were extracted for meta-analysis using RevMan 5.3 software (Cochrane Review). Results: A total of 14 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) including 1249 patients were included in the study. Meta-analysis showed that patients in the compound Xuanju capsule + hormone therapy group had higher estradiol (E2) levels and overall rates of effective treatment than patients in the hormone therapy alone group. Moreover, they exhibited lower levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), as well as lower Kupperman scores, than the hormone therapy alone group. Conclusions: The combination of compound Xuanju capsules and hormone therapy is more effective than hormone therapy alone in the treatment of PCOS-related infertility. However, the quality of current studies is low, and high-quality clinical trials are warranted.

In the current study, the effects of heat-moisture treatment on the ginsenoside contents and ginsenoside compositions such as Rg3, CK and Rb1 etc. were investigated at different temperatures, relative humidities (RHs) and treatment times. Our findings demonstrated that the highest total ginsenoside content was 7.48% after 12 days treatment at temperature 80 °C and RH 75%. Correspondingly, less polar ginsenosides Rg3 and CK were accumulated increasingly from 0.88 mg/g and 0.84 mg/g to 7.30 mg/g and 15.08 mg/g, respectively, during heat-moisture treatment. Compared to the ginsenoside extracts of untreated ginseng (UGE), the ginsenoside extracts of heat-moisture treated ginseng (HMGE) exerted better scavenging activities of 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) cation (ABTS+), and hydroxyl (OH) radicals, as well as higher cytotoxicity efficiency against HepG2. In addition, HMGE promoted cell apoptosis by up-regulating the related protein expression, especially the caspase-3, caspase-9, and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). Therefore, the cytotoxicity of HMGE against HepG2 cells may be due to the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway induced by up-regulated caspase. These results strongly proved the promising prospect of HMGE as functional food or ingredient in nourishing or disease chemoprevention.

Heat stress (HS) causes significant economic losses and has become a continual challenge in the dairy industry worldwide. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a dietary supplement on milk performance and immune function in late-lactation cows under HS conditions. The supplement was a fermented Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) mixture consisting of 18 herbs. Forty lactating Holstein cows (560 ± 51.0 kg of initial BW, 230 ± 10.0 DIM, 16 ± 3.0 kg of milk per day) were randomly assigned into 4 treatment groups (10 cows per group). Each group was fed a dietary supplemented with 0, 25, 50, or 100 g CHMs per cow per day. Cows were housed at high ambient temperature-humidity index (average 74.5) for an experimental period of 42 d during the summer months. Milk yield, composition, immune responses involving blood lymphocyte apoptosis rate, serum biochemical parameters, and genes expression in lymphocytes were evaluated on days 14, 28, and 42, respectively. Results showed that milk yield, milk fat, and protein content were greater (all P < 0.05) for 50 or 100 g/d CHMs compared with the group without CHMs supplements throughout the experimental period. On the other hand, increasing CHMs dose demonstrated a greater lymphocyte or leukocyte count (P < 0.01). By flow cytometry analysis, early or late apoptosis rate of the lymphocytes was decreased (P < 0.05) by CHMs supplements. The immunity-related biochemistry and genes transcript responses involving cytokines (IL-1, IL-2, IL-6, and IL-12), apoptosis (Bak, Mcl-1, Bax, Bcl-2, Bcl-xl, and P53), and immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG, and IgM) were investigated. Compared with the unsupplemented group, the serum IL-2 and IL-6 levels, as well as IL-2 mRNA expression, increased (P < 0.05) for 100 g/d. However, the serum IL-1 level tended to decrease (P = 0.08) with increasing CHMs dose, and IL-1 mRNA expression was down-regulated (P = 0.02) by up to 24% for 100 g/d. Additionally, the serum Bax level decreased (P < 0.01) and Bcl-2 level increased (P = 0.01) for 100 g/d. Bax and Bak mRNA expressions were down-regulated (P < 0.05), and Bcl-2 and Bcl-xl expression were up-regulated (P < 0.05) for 50 or 100 g/d. The mRNA expressions of P53 and Mcl-1 were not affected by CHMs (P > 0.10). Besides, serum IgG levels were greater (P < 0.01) for 50 or 100 g/d, compared with unsupplemented group. In conclusion, CHMs supplements may improve milk performance and immune function in dairy cows under HS conditions.

Selenium (Se) deficiency induces testicular functional disturbances, but the molecular mechanism remains unclear. In the present study, 1-day-old broiler chickens were maintained for 55 days with a normal diet (0.2 mg/kg) and a Se-deficient diet (0.033 mg Se/kg). Then, the messenger RNA (mRNA) levels of selenoproteins, heat shock proteins (HSPs), and inflammatory factors were examined. Se deficiency led to decreased selenoproteins (Gpx1, Selk, and Selh) and HSPs (HSP40, HSP60, and HSP90) (P < 0.05). However, the expression levels of Gpx2, Sepn1, Seli, Selpb, Sepx1, HSP27, and inflammatory factors (iNOS, TNF-α, COX-2, and HO-1) were increased by Se deficiency (P < 0.05). Gpx1, Selk, and Selh showed positive correlation with HSP40, HSP60, and HSP90, but negative correlation with HSP27, HSP70, iNOS, TNF-α, COX-2, and HO-1. However, Gpx2, Spen1, Seli, Selpb, and Sepx1 showed positive correlation with inflammatory factors and HSP27 and HSP70. Selenoproteins showed different correlation with HSPs and inflammatory factors and were classified into different groups in response to Se deficiency. The results suggested that selenoproteins play different roles in chicken testes, and we think that Gpx1 and Selk may play a special role in chicken testes.

The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of selenium (Se) deficiency on the expression of selenoproteins in chicken muscular stomach and to detect the correlation of selenoproteins with muscular stomach injuries. One-day-old broiler chickens were maintained for 55 days on a normal diet (0.2 mg/kg) or a Se-deficient diet (0.033 mg Se/kg). The expression levels of 25 selenoproteins, heat shock proteins (HSPs), and inflammatory factors were then examined by real-time PCR. Following this, the correlation between selenoproteins, HSPs, and inflammatory factors was analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA). The results showed that Se deficiency decreased the expression of 25 selenoproteins (P < 0.05), but increased the expression of HSP27, HSP40, HSP60, HSP70, and HSP90, and NF-κB, iNOS, TNF-α, COX-2, and HO-1 (P < 0.05). Selenoproteins showed a high negative correlation with HSPs and inflammatory factors. Thus, the results suggested that Se deficiency induced muscular stomach injuries by decreasing the expression of selenoproteins. In addition, selenoproteins play an important role in regulating HSPs and inflammatory response. The muscular stomach is a key target of Se deficiency and may play a special role in response to Se deficiency.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of acupotomy on knee osteoarthritis (KOA), compared to electro- acupuncture (EA). METHODS: Sixty KOA patients were randomly divided into 2 groups: ultrasound-guided acupotomy group and EA group; each had 3 weeks' therapy. After the treatment, by contrast before and after therapy, by comparing curative effects among groups, we looked into disease improvement degree through activities of daily living score (ADL), hospital for special surgery index (HSS), visual analogue scales score (VAS) and knee joint's infrared thermal imaging detection . RESULTS: Graded by ADL, the excellent rate in acupotomy group was much higher than EA group; both acupotomy group and EA group had obvious changes in HSS index before and after the therapy (P < 0.01). And there was remarkable difference in HSS index variation between the groups (P < 0.01). Acupotomy group and EA group showed big difference in pain index before and after treatment (P < 0.01). Apparent difference also existed in the comparison among groups (P < 0.01). Both acupotomy group and EA group had apparent changes in infrared thermal imaging detection before and after the treatment (P < 0. 01). CONCLUSION: Acupotomy and EA both have significant effects in KOA treatment; the former is better than the latter in relieving pain and improving knee functions.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of Se deficiency on the transcription of inflammatory factors and selenoprotein genes in the kidneys of broiler chicks. One hundred fifty 1-day-old broiler chicks were randomly assigned to two groups fed with either a low-Se diet (L group, 0.033 mg/kg Se) or an adequate Se diet (C group, 0.2 mg/kg Se). The levels of uric acid (UA) and creatinine (Cr) in the serum and the mRNA levels of 6 inflammatory factors and 25 selenoprotein genes in the kidneys were measured as the clinical signs of Se deficiency occurred at 20 days old. The results indicated that the contents of UA and Cr in the serum increased in L group (p < 0.05), and the mRNA levels of the inflammatory factors (NF-κB, iNOS, COX-2, and TNF-α) increased in L group (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the mRNA levels of PTGEs and HO-1 were not changed. In addition, 25 selenoprotein transcripts displayed ubiquitous expression in the kidneys of the chicks. The mRNA levels of 14 selenoprotein genes (Dio1, Dio2, GPx3, Sepp1, SelH, SelI, SelK, Sepn1, SelO, SelW, Sep15, SelT, SelU, and SelS) decreased, and 9 selenoprotein genes (GPx1, GPx2, GPx4, SelPb, Txnrd1, Txnrd2, Txnrd3, SPS2, and SelM) increased in L group (p < 0.05), but the Dio3 and Sepx1 mRNA levels did not change. The results indicated that Se deficiency resulted in kidney dysfunction, activation of the NF-κB pathway, and a change in selenoprotein gene expression. The changes of inflammatory factor and selenoprotein gene expression levels were directly related to the abnormal renal functions induced by Se deficiency.

Three new xanthones, 1,5-dihydroxy-3-hydroxyethyl-6-methoxycarbonylxanthone (1), 1-hydroxy-5- methoxy-3-hydroxyethyl-6-methoxycarbonylxanthone (2), and 1-hydroxy-3-hydroxyethyl- 8-ethoxycarbonylxanthone (3), along with seven known xanthones (4-10) were isolated from the fermentation products of an endophytic fungus Phomopsis sp.. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including extensive 1D- and 2D-NMR techniques. Compounds 1-10 were also tested for their cytotoxicity against five human tumor cell lines (NB4, A549, SHSY5Y, PC3, and MCF7) by MTT method using paclitaxel as positive control. Compounds 1 and 3 showed cytotoxicity against A549 cell lines with IC50 values of 3.6 and 2.5 µM, respectively. In addition, 1 was cytotoxic to MCF7 cells with IC50 value of 2.7 µM.

Selenium is an essential element with antioxidant roles in immune regulation, but there is little understanding of how Se acts in apoptosis in the immune organs of birds. The aim of study was to evaluate the influence of Se deficiency on oxygen free radicals, NO and apoptosis in immune organ of chickens. 160 1-day-old chickens were randomly assigned to two groups of 80 each and were fed on a low-Se diet (0.032 mg/kg Se) or a control diet (0.282 mg/kg Se), respectively. OFR production in blood was determined on days 30, 45, 60 and 75, respectively. The iNOS-NO system activity in immune organ (thymus, spleen, bursa of fabricius) was identified by NO content and NOS activity assay on days 30, 45, 60 and 75, respectively. Apoptosis was measured by DNA ladder analysis, ultrastructural observations, TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling TUNEL assay and flow cytometric analysis of apoptotic DNA. The transcription of factor-associated suicide, caspase-3 mRNA was tested by fluorescence quantitative PCR. The results showed that OFR production, NO and inducible NO synthases (iNOS) activity in the low-Se group were significantly increased (p < 0.05) than in the control group. In addition, apoptosis was observed in chicken immune organ in the low-Se group. The degree and the number of apoptotic cells rose in a time-dependent manner. The expression of Fas and caspase-3 mRNA increased (p < 0.05) than in the control group. It indicated that the oxidative stress and NO played a causative role in the apoptosis of immune tissues induced by selenium deficiency.

This study evaluated the potential of silver nanoparticles (AgNano) as an antimicrobial growth-promoting supplement for broiler chickens. One hundred forty-four seven-day-old broiler chicks were distributed randomly to AgNano treatments at 0, 10 and 20 mg/kg (Control, Group AgNano10, and Group AgNano20, respectively) provided via the drinking water from day 7 to 36 post-hatching. Body weight and feed consumption were measured weekly. In addition, balance and respiration experiments were carried out to determine nitrogen (N) utilisation and energy retention. At days 22 and 36, blood samples and intestinal content were collected to evaluate the effects of AgNano on plasma concentration of immunoglobulins and the intestinal microflora, respectively. The provision of water solutions containing different concentrations of AgNano had no effect on postnatal growth performance and the energy metabolism of broiler chickens. However, in Group AgNano10 N intake (p = 0.05) and retention (p = 0.03) was increased, but N excretion and efficiency of utilisation was not affected. The populations of bacteria in the intestinal samples were not affected by AgNano supplementation. The concentration of immunoglobulin (IgG) in the blood plasma of broilers supplemented with AgNano decreased at day 36 (p = 0.012). The results demonstrated that AgNano affects N utilisation and plasma IgG concentration; however, it does not influence the microbial populations in the digestive tract, the energy metabolism and growth performance of chickens.

OBJECTIVE: In order to provide an objective observational index for facial neuritis, the authors monitored the changes of facial far-infrared thermogram in patients with acute facial neuritis. METHODS: A total of 23 patients with acute facial neuritis were enrolled from Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Chinese PLA General Hospital. Another 21 healthy participants were selected as the control group. Focal plane thermal imaging system (thermal sensitivity 0.05 degrees centigrade) was applied to collect facial far-infrared thermogram. Temperature differences in the thermogram of both sides of the cheeks, inner canthus, supraorbitals and forehead of the same patient were compared separately and statistically and analyzed by software provided by the imaging system. RESULTS: Results of far-infrared thermography of the patients displayed obvious temperature differences ranging from 0.01 to 0.26 degrees centigrade between two sides of the cheeks, inner canthus, supraorbitals and forehead areas. In the control group, far-infrared thermogram showed that there were no obvious temperature differences between two sides of the cheeks, inner canthus, supraorbitals and forehead. There were significant differences in temperature difference in the four monitoring areas between the two groups (P<0.01). Among the 23 patients, there were 14 patients with congestive change, 7 with ischemic change and 2 with both congestive and ischemic changes. CONCLUSION: The facial far-infrared thermogram of patients with acute facial neuritis is characterized mainly by congestive changes. Far-infrared thermography can objectively reflect the changes of blood-supply status in patients with facial neuritis.

OBJECTIVE: To study the karyotype of four Ephedra plants in order to provide the cytologic evidence for the genetic diversity and identification genetic resources of Ephedra. METHOD: The roots of germinating seeds were used to study the karyotype of four Ephedra plants by staining and slide-preparing technique of mitotic chromosomes. RESULT: the optimal root-sampling time was about 10: 20 - 10:40 am. Using 0.002 mol x L(-1) 8-Hydroxyquinoline to pretreating the intravital root tips, the optimal pretreatment time for E. Sinica, E. intermedina, E. equisetina and E. przewalskii was 4, 5, 4.5 and 3.5 h, respectively. E. przewalskii and E. equisetina were diploid, E. Sinica and E. intermedina were belonged quadruple. The karyotype formulae of the four species were 2n = 2x = 14 = 2M + 8m + 4sm, 2n = 2x = 14 = 10m + 4st, 2n = 4x = 28 = 20m (2SAT) +8st, and 2n = 4x = 28 = 20m (SAT) + 6st + 2sm, respectively. CONCLUSION: All the karyotypes of four Ephedra species were 2A type, which was the symmetric karyotype.

OBJECTIVE: Characters of stem epidermis, leaf epidermis and stoma could be used as important microcosmic morphological characteristic when inheritance trend is studied in Ephedra breeding and identification. METHOD: The stomatic density, stoma major axis and mimor axis, stomatic morphylogy, characters of leaf and stem epidermis of 6 Ephedra plants' stems were examined by SEM. RESULT: The stomatic density and characteristic of leaf epidermis and stem epidermis in six Ephedra species was differenc, there were no obvious morphological differences in stoma shape and size. The guard cells were covered with heavy cuticle and sunken stomata, which were the typical characteristics of xerophytes. The stomas of leaf lower epidermis were oblong or hexagon, but the stomas of steam epidermis were narrowed-oblong or dumbbell-shape, they all belonged to anomalous type. CONCLUSION: The stoma type and characters of Ephedra plants is stable and conservative, there was no obvious morphological differences in stoma shape and size between species, so it is difficult to distinguish different species by the variance of stomas, but that can be applyed to distinguish Ephedra from others at plant taxonomy.
