RESUMEN

Traditional Chinese exercises (TCEs) have great value in the prevention and effective treatment of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Our purpose in this study was to summarize present research trends and future directions regarding the link between TCEs and CVD by bibliometrics analysis. We searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) for all original articles and reviews on TCEs for CVD published in English before August 7, 2022 using CiteSpace 5.8.R3 and Microsoft Excel 2019 software, and we displayed the results in the form of network maps, line graphs, and tables. We initially obtained 725 articles. Our results showed that the United States was the most influential country in this line of research, with Harvard University the most prolific institution in the field, and, Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine was the most productive journal for these articles. The highest-frequency keywords in this research area were Tai Chi, exercise, blood pressure, quality of life, and older adult. Additionally, important research topics included heart rate variability, quality of life, meta-analysis, Baduanjin exercise, and breathing exercise. In addition, our results revealed that among all the TCEs, Tai Chi, Baduanjin, and Qigong emerged as the most extensively studied. However, it's important to note our exclusive focus on literature published in English may have led to our missing important results. Future investigators should broaden their search to include other databases and languages to present a still more comprehensive overview of this field.

Macamides are a class of amide alkaloids that are only found in maca and are widely considered to be its bioactive marker compounds. More than thirty macamide monomers have been identified in recent years; however, it is difficult to obtain a single macamide monomer from the maca plant because of their similar structures and characteristics. We used the carbodiimide condensation method (CCM) to efficiently synthesize five typical macamides, including N-benzyl-hexadecanamide (NBH), N-benzyl-9Z,12Z,15Z-octadecenamide, N-(3-methoxybenzyl)-9Z,12Z-octadecenamide, N-benzyl-9Z,12Z-octadecenamide, and N-(3-methoxybenzyl)-9Z,12Z,15Z-octadecadienamide. All the synthesized macamides were purified by a one-step HPLC with a purity of more than 95%. NBH is the most abundant macamide monomer in natural maca, and it was selected to evaluate the anti-fatigue effects of macamides. The results indicated that NBH could enhance the endurance capacity of mice by increasing liver glycogen levels and decreasing blood urea nitrogen, lactate dehydrogenase, blood ammonia, and blood lactic acid levels. Macamides might be the active substances that give maca its anti-fatigue active function.

Flaxseed is a functional food because of its high content of alpha-linolenic acid, lignans, and dietary fiber. We hypothesized that flaxseed supplementation would improve cardiometabolic parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM); however, clinical trials have shown conflicting results. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to determine the impact of flaxseed supplementation in patients with T2DM. Randomized controlled trials were systematically searched in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Embase until 25 March 2022. A total of 13 studies were included, and the results showed that flaxseed supplementation significantly reduced hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in participants with T2DM compared with the control group. In contrast, it had no effects on body weight, body mass index, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose (FBG), homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance, quantitative insulin sensitivity check index, and lipid parameters. In the subgroup analyses, FBG was significantly reduced with supplementation of flaxseed in participants with baseline FBG ≥8.0 mmol/L or baseline HbA1c ≥7.0%. And a significant decrease in HbA1c in participants with baseline HbA1c ≥7.0% after flaxseed supplementation. In addition, subgroup analyses indicated that whole flaxseed supplementation significantly increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and reduced total cholesterol or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in participants with T2DM. In conclusion, flaxseed supplementation significantly reduced HbA1c in participants with T2DM, especially those with poorly controlled blood sugar levels. However, larger scale studies with better designs are needed to confirm insignificant and/or ambiguous findings.

Commonly used clinical chemotherapy drugs, such as cyclophosphamide (CTX), may cause injury to the ovaries. Hormone therapies can reduce the ovarian injury risk; however, they do not achieve the desired effect and have obvious side effects. Therefore, it is necessary to find a potential therapeutic candidate for ovarian injury after chemotherapy. N-Benzyl docosahexaenamide (NB-DHA) is a docosahexaenoic acid derivative. It was recently identified as the specific macamide with a high degree of unsaturation in maca (Lepidium meyenii). In this study, the purified NB-DHA was administered intragastrically to the mice with CTX-induced ovarian injury at three dose levels. Blood and tissue samples were collected to assess the regulation of NB-DHA on ovarian function. The results indicated that NB-DHA was effective in improving the disorder of estrous cycle, and the CTX+NB-H group can be recovered to normal levels. NB-DHA also significantly increased the number of primordial follicles, especially in the CTX+NB-M and CTX+NB-H groups. Follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone levels in all treatment groups and estradiol levels in the CTX+NB-H group returned to normal. mRNA expression of ovarian development-related genes was positive regulated. The proportion of granulosa cell apoptosis decreased significantly, especially in the CTX+NB-H group. The expression of anti-Müllerian hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone receptor significantly increased in ovarian tissues after NB-DHA treatment. NB-DHA may be a promising agent for treating ovarian injury.

Chang-Kang-Fang formula (CKF), a multi-herb traditional Chinese medicine, has been used in clinical settings to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Recent studies show that 5.0 g/kg/d CKF can alleviate the symptoms of IBS rats by modulating the brain-gut axis through the production of brain-gut peptides (BGPs), thus relieving pain, and reversing the effects of intestinal propulsion disorders. However, the exact mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of CKF in IBS remain unclear. The microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA) is central to the pathogenesis of IBS, regulating BGPs, depression-like behaviors, and gut microbiota. Given that CKF ameliorates IBS via the MGBA, we performed metabolomic analyses, evaluated the gut microbiota, and system pharmacology to elucidate the mechanisms of action of CKF. The results of intestinal tract motility, abdominal withdrawal reflex (AWR), sucrose preference test (SPT), and the forced swimming test (FST) showed that the male Sprague-Dawley rats subjected to chronic acute combining stress (CACS) for 22 days exhibited altered intestinal motility, visceral hypersensitivity, and depression-like behaviors. Treatment of IBS rats with CKF normalized dysfunctions of CACS-induced central and peripheral nervous system. CKF regulated BDNF and 5-HT levels in the colon and hippocampus as well as the expressions of the related BGP pathway genes. Moreover, the system pharmacology assays were used to assess the physiological targets involved in the action of CKF, with results suggesting that CKF putatively functioned through the 5-HT-PKA-CREB-BDNF pathway. LC-MS-based metabolomics identified the significantly altered 5-HT pathway-related metabolites in the CKF treatment group, and thus, the CKF-related signaling pathways were further examined. After pyrosequencing-based analysis of bacterial 16S rRNA (V3 + V4 region) using rat feces, the Lefse analysis of gut microbiota suggested that CKF treatment could induce structural changes in the gut microbiota, thereby regulating it by decreasing Clostridiales, and the F-B ratio while increasing the levels of Lactobacillus. Furthermore, the integrated analysis showed a correlation of CKF-associated microbes with metabolites. These findings showed that CKF effectively alleviated IBS, which was associated with the altered features of the metabolite profiles and the gut microbiota through a bidirectional communication along the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

Macamides are a class of bioactive amide alkaloids found only in maca (Lepidium meyenii). Recent studies have shown that macamide-rich extracts possess various biological activities, such as antioxidative, immune-enhancing, and reproductive health-improving activities. In the present study, N-benzyl docosahexaenamide (NB-DHA), a newly identified macamide with the highest degree of unsaturation among all identified macamides, was identified from the maca extract. Microalgae oil, a docosahexaenoic acid-rich substance, was used as the starting material for the synthesis of NB-DHA. The effects of NB-DHA in colitis-induced mice were evaluated. NB-DHA significantly alleviated weight loss, shortening of colon length, and occult blood occurrence in mice with dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis. Histological analysis revealed that following the administration of NB-DHA in mice with colitis, the infiltration of inflammatory cells and levels of proinflammatory factors, such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, and myeloperoxidase, decreased, whereas the level of the anti-inflammatory factor IL-10 increased. Furthermore, the decreased expression of intestinal tight junction proteins caused by colitis was upregulated by the administration of NB-DHA. These results indicate that NB-DHA could be developed as a therapeutic agent for ulcerative colitis.

BACKGROUND: Previous clinical studies have shown controversial results regarding the effect of inorganic nitrate supplementation on blood pressure (BP) in older individuals. We performed this systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effect of inorganic nitrate on BP in older adults. METHODS: Eligible studies were searched in Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase. Randomized controlled trials which evaluated the effect of inorganic nitrate consumption on BP in older adults were recruited. The random-effect model was used to calculate the pooled effect sizes. RESULTS: 22 studies were included in this meta-analysis. Overall, inorganic nitrate consumption significantly reduced systolic blood pressure (SBP) by -3.90 mmHg (95% confidence interval: -5.23 to -2.57; P < 0.001) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) by -2.62 mmHg (95% confidence interval: -3.86 to -1.37; P < 0.005) comparing with the control group. Subgroup analysis showed that the BP was significantly reduced when participants' age≥65, BMI>30, or baseline BP in prehypertension stage. And both SBP and DBP decreased significantly after acute nitrate supplementation of a single dose (<1 day) or more than 1-week. However, participants with hypertension at baseline were not associated with significant changes in both SBP and DBP. Subgroup analysis of measurement methods showed that only the resting BP group showed a significant reduction in SBP and DBP, compared with the 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) group and daily home BP measurement group. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrate that consuming inorganic nitrate can significantly reduce SBP and DBP in older adults, especially in whose age ≥ 65, BMI>30, or baseline BP in prehypertension stage.

OBJECTIVES: Previous clinical studies have shown controversial results regarding the effect of Lactobacillus supplementation on blood pressure (BP). The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to examine the effect of Lactobacillus consumption on BP. METHODS: Eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were searched from five electronic databases until May 2020. In total, 18 studies were included in our meta-analysis. Quality of the selected studies was assessed, and a random-effects model was used to calculate the overall effect sizes of weighted mean differences (WMD). This systematic review was registered in PROSPERO with the number: CRD42019139294. RESULTS: Lactobacillus consumption significantly reduced systolic blood pressure (SBP) by -2.74 mmHg (95% confidence interval, -4.96 to -0.51) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) by -1.50 mmHg (95% confidence interval, -2.44 to -0.56) when comparing with the control group. Subgroup analysis showed that type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients, Asian individuals, or borderline hypertension participants were more sensitive to daily consumption of Lactobacillus. And the effect of Lactobacillus on BP-reduction was more significant in capsule form, with the dose was above 5 × 109 colony-forming unit (CFU)/day or lasted for more than 8 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: Our present study suggests that Lactobacillus consumption in capsule form when the daily dose is above 5 × 109 CFU for more than 8 weeks can decrease SBP or DBP in T2DM patients, borderline hypertension participants or Asian individuals.

Plectranthus excisus is widely distributed throughout northeast China. Its active ingredient, diterpenoids, exhibits significant antitumor effects. The present study examined the antitumor effects of diterpenoid B (DB), derived from Plectranthus excisus, and demonstrated that DB inhibited the proliferation of tumor cells by inhibiting the cell cycle. Reverse transcription­quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blot analysis were used to determine mRNA and protein expression levels, respectively. The results revealed that exposure to DB increased the expression levels of the transformation associated, protein 53, and cyclin­dependent kinase inhibitor 1A, and decreased the expression of cyclin­dependent kinase 2. The results of the present study demonstrated that DB can inhibit cell cycle progression and, therefore, offers potential as a beneficial antitumor drug.

Several studies have focused on the beneficial effects of peripheral angiotensin-(1-7) [Ang-(1-7)] in the regulation of cardiovascular function, showing its counterregulatory effect against the actions of angiotensin II (ANG II). However, its actions in the central nervous system are not completely understood. In the present study, we investigated the intracellular mechanisms underlying the action of ANG-(1-7) using the patch-clamp technique in neurons cultured from the hypothalamus of neonatal spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. Superfusion of neurons with ANG II (100 nM) significantly increased neuronal firing in both strains of rats, and this chronotropic effect of ANG II was significantly enhanced in prehypertensive SHR neurons compared with WKY rat neurons. The enhanced chronotropic effect of ANG II was attenuated by a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-kinase) inhibitor, LY 294002 (10 µM). Superfusion of neurons with ANG-(1-7) (100 nM) did not alter the neuronal firing rate in either SHR or WKY neurons; however, it significantly attenuated the chronotropic action of ANG II exclusively in prehypertensive SHR neurons. This counterregulatory effect of ANG-(1-7) on ANG II action in prehypertensive SHR neurons was attenuated by cotreatment with either A-779, a Mas receptor antagonist, or bisperoxovanadium, a phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome ten (PTEN) inhibitor. In addition, incubation of WKY and prehypertensive SHR neurons with ANG-(1-7) significantly increased PTEN activity. The data demonstrate that ANG-(1-7) counterregulates the chronotropic action of ANG II via a PTEN-dependent signaling pathway in prehypertensive SHR neurons.
