RESUMEN

Liver fibrosis, characterized by the overproduction of extracellular matrix proteins within liver tissue, poses a rising global health concern. However, no approved antifibrotic drugs are currently available, highlighting the critical need for understanding the molecular mechanisms of liver fibrosis. This knowledge could not only aid in developing therapies but also enable early intervention, enhance disease prediction, and improve our understanding of the interaction between various underlying conditions and the liver. Notably, natural products used in traditional medicine systems worldwide and demonstrating diverse biochemical and pharmacological activities are increasingly recognized for their potential in treating liver fibrosis. This review aims to comprehensively understand liver fibrosis, emphasizing the molecular mechanisms and advancements in exploring natural products' antifibrotic potential over the past five years. It also acknowledges the challenges in their development and seeks to underscore their potency in enhancing patient prognosis and reducing the global burden of liver disease.

Coptis chinensis Franch (RC), has historically been used for the treatment of "Xiao Ke" and "Xia Li" symptoms in China. "Xia Li" is characterized by abdominal pain and diarrhea, which are similar to the clinical symptoms of ulcerative colitis (UC). For the first time, this study aims to compare the anti-colitis effects of berberine (BBR) and total RC alkaloids (TRCA) and investigate the underlying metabolites and gut microbiota biomarkers. Metabolomics results showed that several colitis-related biomarkers, including lysophosphatidyl ethanolamine, lysophosphatidylcholine, scopolamine-methyl-bromide, N1-methyl-2-pyridone-5-carboxamide, 4-hydroxyretinoic acid, and malic acid, were significantly improved in model mice after BBR and TRCA treatments. High-dose BBR and TRCA treatments reversed the mouse colon shortening caused by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS), alleviated bowel wall swelling, and reduced inflammatory cell infiltration. BBR and TRCA restored the damaged mucosa integrity in colitis mice by upregulating claudin 1 and occludin, preventing colon epithelium apoptosis by inhibiting the cleavage of caspase 3. Additionally, BBR and TRCA significantly decreased the richness of the pathogenic bacteria Bacteroides acidifaciens but increased the abundance of the probiotic Lactobacillus spp. Notably, TRCA exhibited superior anti-colitis effects to those of BBR. Thus, this agent warrants further study and application in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease in the clinic.

The uptake of Ca2+ into and extrusion of calcium from the mitochondrial matrix, regulated by the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter (MCU), is a fundamental biological process that has crucial impacts on cellular metabolism, signaling, growth and survival. Herein, we report that the embryonic lethality of Mcu-deficient mice is fully rescued by orally supplementing ferroptosis inhibitor lipophilic antioxidant vitamin E and ubiquinol. Mechanistically, we found MCU promotes acetyl-CoA-mediated GPX4 acetylation at K90 residue, and K90R mutation impaired the GPX4 enzymatic activity, a step that is crucial for ferroptosis. Structural analysis supports the possibility that GPX4 K90R mutation alters the conformational state of the molecule, resulting in disruption of a salt bridge formation with D23, which was confirmed by mutagenesis studies. Finally, we report that deletion of MCU in cancer cells caused a marked reduction in tumor growth in multiple cancer models. In summary, our study provides a first direct link between mitochondrial calcium level and sustained GPX4 enzymatic activity to regulate ferroptosis, which consequently protects cancer cells from ferroptosis.

With scarce resources, natural Bovis Calculus is expensive and hard to meet clinical demand. At the moment, four kinds of Bovis Calculus are available on the market: the natural product, in vitro cultured product, synthesized product, and the product formed in cow after manual intervention. In this study, papers on the four kinds of Bovis Calculus products and relevant Chinese patent medicines were searched from Web of Science, PubMed, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI). CiteSpace, citexs AI, and CNKI were employed for bibliometric analysis and knowledge map analysis. On this basis, the status, trend, and focuses of research on Bovis Calculus and relevant Chinese patent medicines were summarized. The results suggested overall slow development in the research on Bovis Calculus and relevant Chinese patent medicines with three typical growth stages. It is consistent with the development of Bovis Calculus substitutes and the national policy for the development of traditional Chinese medicine. At the moment, the research on Bovis Calculus and relevant Chinese patent medicines has been on the rise. In recent years, there has been an explosion of research on them, particularly the quality control of Bovis Calculus and the Chinese patent medicines, the pharmacological efficacy of Chinese patent medicines, such as Angong Niuhuang Pills, and the comparison of the quality of various Bovis Calculus products. However, there is a paucity of research on the pharmacological efficacy and the mechanism of Bovis Calculus. This medicinal and the relevant Chinese patent medicines have been studied from diverse perspectives and China becomes outstanding in this research field. However, it is still necessary to reveal the chemical composition, pharmacological efficacy, and mechanism through multi-dimensional deep research.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the mechanism of Xuanhusuo powder (XHSP) inhibiting the differentiation of spleen myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in breast cancer mice. METHODS: Forty-eight BALB/c female mice aged 4-5 weeks were selected, 6 of them were in normal control group, while others were in tumor-bearing models established by orthotopic injection of 4T1 cells into the subcutaneous fat pad of the second pair of left mammary glands. The tumor-bearing mice were divided into granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) control group, G-CSF knock-down group, model control group, XHSP small dose group, XHSP medium dose group, XHSP high dose group, and cyclophosphamide (CTX) group, with 6 mice in each group. G-CSF control group and G-CSF knock-down group were constructed by stably transfecting 4T1 cells established by shRNA lentivirus combined with puromycin selection. 48 h after the model was established, XHSP small, medium, high dose group were given 2, 4, 8 g·kg-1·d-1 intragastric administration once a day, respectively. CTX was given 30 mg/kg by intraperitoneal injection, once every other day. The other groups were given an equal volume of 0.5% hydroxymethylcellulose sodium. The drugs in each group were continuously administered for 25 d. Histological changes in spleen were observed by HE staining, the proportion of MDSCs subsets in the spleen were detected by flow cytometry, the co-expression of CD11b and Ly6G in the spleen was detected by immunofluorescence, and the concentration of G-CSF in peripheral blood was detected by ELISA. The spleen of tumor-bearing mice was co-cultured with 4T1 stably transfected cell lines in vitro, treated with XHSP (30 µg/mL) for 24 h, and the co-expression of CD11b and Ly6G in the spleen was detected by immunofluorescence. 4T1 cells were treated by XHSP (10, 30, 100 µg/mL) for 12 h. The mRNA level of G-CSF was detected by realtime RT-PCR. RESULTS: Compared with normal mice, the red pulp of the spleen in tumor-bearing mice was widened with megakaryocyte infiltration. The proportion of spleen polymorphonucleocyte-like MDSCs (PMN-MDSCs) was significantly increased (P<0.01) and the co-expression of CD11b and Ly6G was increased, and the concentration of G-CSF in peripheral blood was significantly increased (P<0.01). However, XHSP could significantly reduce the proportion of PMN-MDSCs (P<0.05) and the co-expression of CD11b and Ly6G in the spleen, down-regulate the mRNA level of G-CSF in 4T1 cells (P<0.01). The concentration of G-CSF in peripheral blood of tumor-bearing mice also decreased (P<0.05) and tumor volume was reduced and splenomegaly was improved (all P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: XHSP may play an anti-breast cancer role by down-regulating G-CSF, negatively regulating the differentiation of MDSCs, and reconstruct the spleen myeloid microenvironment.

In this study, soluble dietary fibers (SDFs) were extracted from rape bee pollen using four methods including acid extraction (AC), alkali extraction (AL), cellulase extraction (CL) and complex enzyme extraction (CE). The effects of different extraction methods on the structure of SDFs and in vitro fermentation characteristics were further investigated. The results showed that the four extraction methods significantly affected the monosaccharide composition molar ratio, molecular weight, surface microstructure and phenolic compounds content, but showed little effect on the typical functional groups and crystal structure. In addition, all SDFs decreased the Firmicutes/Bacteroidota ratio, promoted the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Bacteroides, Parabacteroides and Phascolarctobacterium, inhibited the growth of pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia-Shigella, and increased the total short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) concentrations by 1.63-2.45 times, suggesting that the bee pollen SDFs had a positive regulation on gut microbiota. Notably, the SDF obtained by CE exhibited the largest molecular weight, a relatively loose structure, higher extraction yield and phenolic compounds content and the highest SCFA concentration. Overall, our results indicated that CE was an appropriate extraction method of high-quality bee pollen SDF.

Soil aquifer treatment (SAT) has been widely applied for wastewater reclamation, which cooperates secondary treatment (i.e. A2O process) and disinfection treatment (chlorination) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), to remove organic matter. This study compared dissolved organic carbon (DOC) characteristics, substrate utilisation patterns, and microbial communities between pre-chlorination SAT and SAT columns, and effective removals of DOC were observed in the pre-chlorination SAT and SAT columns. However, the composition of HiA in SAT columns without chlorination was less than in pre-chlorination SAT columns for DOC fraction. In comparison to A2O effluent, different metabolic patterns and the composition of the microbial community were demonstrated by the top layer of SAT column and pre-chlorination SAT column. Furthermore, deeper layers showed similarities in the metabolic pattern and composition of the microbial community. Overall, pre-chlorination minimised the change of the microbial communities from A2O effluent in the top layer of SAT except for deeper layers, and DOC concentrations decreased in pre-chlorination SAT column. Thus, the cooperation of SAT and wastewater treatments could be suitable for wastewater reclamation.

Polyphenol, one of the major components that exert the therapeutic effect of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM), comprises several categories, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, lignans and stilbenes, and has long been studied in oncology due to its significant efficacy against cancers in vitro and in vivo. Recent evidence has linked this antitumor activity to the role of polyphenols in the modulation of redox homeostasis (e.g., pro/antioxidative effect) in cancer cells. Dysregulation of redox homeostasis could lead to the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in oxidative stress, which is essential for many aspects of tumors, such as tumorigenesis, progression, and drug resistance. Thus, investigating the ROS-mediated anticancer properties of polyphenols is beneficial for the discovery and development of novel pharmacologic agents. In this review, we summarized these extensively studied polyphenols and discussed the regulatory mechanisms related to the modulation of redox homeostasis that are involved in their antitumor property. In addition, we discussed novel technologies and strategies that could promote the development of CHM-derived polyphenols to improve their versatile anticancer properties, including the development of novel delivery systems, chemical modification, and combination with other agents.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The bidirectional property of traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) was recorded in the classic work Medicine Origin (Yi Xue Qi Yuan) as early as the Jin and Yuan dynasties of ancient China. Since then, this imperative theory has been applied to guide the clinical application of TCMs. Studies have been performed to investigate this phenomenon only over the last three decades. A limited number of reviews on the bidirectional role of TCMs have been published, and almost all current studies are published in the Chinese language. AIM OF THE REVIEW: The aim of this review is to provide the first comprehensive evidence regarding the bidirectional effects and the underlying mechanisms of TCMs and their active compounds. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Information relevant to opposing pharmacological activities or opposing properties exerted by TCM prescriptions, herbal medicines, and their active compound, as well as their mechanisms was summarized by searching Chinese and English databases, including the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wan Fang Data, Chinese Scientific Journal Database (VIP), Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Wiley Online Library. RESULTS: Although the bidirectional regulation of TCMs has been applied in the clinic since ancient times in China, only limited reviews have been published in Chinese. The existing data showed that bidirectional effects can be found in TCM prescriptions, herbal medicines, and pure active compounds. Additionally, the bidirectional role of TCMs was primarily reported in the modulation of immune function, blood circulation and hemostasis, gastrointestinal motility, the central nervous system and blood pressure. This may because the therapeutic outcomes of these disorders are more obvious than those of other complicated diseases. Intriguingly, some herbal medicines have multiple bidirectional activities; for instance, Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer showed bidirectional regulation of immune function and the central nervous system; Astragalus membranaceus can bidirectionally regulate blood pressure and immune function; and Rheum officinale Baill exerts bidirectional effects on blood circulation and hemostasis, gastrointestinal motility and immune function. The mechanisms underlying the bidirectional effects of TCMs are largely attributed to the complexity of herbal constituents, dosage differences, the processing of herbal medicine, and compatibility of medicines, the physiological conditions of patients and adaptogenic effects. CONCLUSION: Uncovering the bidirectional effects and mechanisms of TCMs is of great importance for both scientific research and clinical applications. This review may help to facilitate the recognition of the bidirectional role of TCMs, to explain some seemingly-opposite phenomena in the pharmacological study of herbal medicines and to provide guidance for TCM practitioners.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The combination of Coptis chinensis (RC) and Dolomiaea souliei (VR) has long been used as a classic herb pair for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, the rationality of evidence-based RC and VR combination was explored from the perspective of metabolism, gut microbiota and gastrointestinal function. RESULTS: After 5 weeks treatment, VR extracts (700 mg/kg) and RC alkaloids (800 mg/kg) showed no toxic effect on mice. However, RC administration significantly decreased the body weight of mice. Gastric emptying, gastrointestinal motility function and the absorption of FITC dextran were retarded in the mice of RC group, taking RC along with low dose VR (RC-VRL) and high dose VR (RC-VRH) reversed the impaired gastrointestinal function caused by RC. RC administration significantly increased villus height/crypt depth value. Notably, VR administration increased the number of crypts in mice ileum and reduced villus height/crypt depth value in VR and RC combination group. RC treatment significantly increased the expression of occludin compared to NC group; RC-VRL treatment reversed this tendency. While, VR administration increased ZO1 expression by 99.4% compared to NC mice. As for gut microbiota, RC gavage decreased the gut microbiota diversity, but gut microbiota in VR group was similar to NC group, and VR and RC combination increased gut microbiota diversity. RC administration obviously increased the proportion of Akkermansia muciniphila, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, Parabacteroides distasonis, and Escherichia coli, compared to NC mice. VR treatment increased the richness of Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, Parabacteroides distasonis. RC-VRL and RC-VRH treatment dose-dependently increased the richness of Rikenellaceae RC9, Lactobacillus, and decreased the abundance of Psychrobacter, Bacteroides and Ruminococcus in mice. Serum metabolomic analysis revealed that RC gavage significantly down regulated 76 metabolites and up regulated 31 metabolites. VR treatment significantly down regulated 30 metabolites and up regulated 12 metabolites. Weight loss caused by RC may attribute to the elevated methylxanthine level in mice. The potential adverse effects caused by high dose RC intake may partially alleviate by high serum contents of adenosine, inosine and urolithin A resulted from VR coadministration. CONCLUSION: VR may alleviate RC caused "fluid retention" via normalizing gastrointestinal function, gut microbiota and modulating the perturbed metabolism.

BACKGROUNDS: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common, preventable disease of airflow limitation that accounts for the third leading deaths of any disease process in the worldwide. Health benefits of liuzijue qigong (LQG) on patients with stable COPD has been assessed. This study was designed to perform a systemic review and meta-analysis of the effect of Liuzijue breathing exercise on patients with stable COPD. METHODS: Published articles from 1970 to December 2020 were conducted using electronic searches. Two independents reviewers conducted data extraction. The Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. RESULTS: A total of 16 eligible trials with 1039 patients with stable COPD were identified. Compared with control group, the pool meta-analysis of LQG showed a significant improvement in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) (MD = -0.16, 95% CI [0.09, 0.23], P < .00001), FEV1% (MD = 9.71, 95% CI [8.44, 10.98], P < .00001), the ratio of forced expiratory volume to forced vital capacity in the first second (FEV1/FVC [%]) (MD = 4.81, 95% CI [2.12, 7.51], P = .0005), 6 minutes walking distance (6MWD) (MD = 21.89, 95% CI [14.67, 29.11], P < .00001), health-related quality of life (SMD = -0.84, 95% CI [-1.12,-0.55], P < .00001) and modified medical research council dyspnea scale (mMRC) (MD = -0.73, 95% CI [-0.96, -0.50], P < .00001). The observed effect was more pronounced for short term and medium-term duration interventions of study. It also showed improvements in the secondary outcome measures by LQG. CONCLUSIONS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, LQG can improve lung ventilation function, exercise endurance and health-related quality of life of patients with stable COPD. ETHIC AND DISSEMINATION: This study is a systematic review and it does not involve harming to the rights of participants. Ethical approval will not be require for this study. The research results may be published in a peer-reviewed journals.

Global lakes serve as a key natural source of methane (CH4) and suffer from increasing hypoxia due to unprecedented anthropogenic activities and climate change. A black bloom is a temporary hypoxia triggered by a longstanding algal bloom, which facilitates CH4 production by creating reducing conditions and abundant algae-sourced organic carbon. One-year investigations were conducted to examine temporal CH4 dynamics in the water and sediment pore water in black bloom prone areas (BBPAs) in Lake Taihu, China, where there had been at least two recorded black bloom events. The CH4 in the water changed significantly with time (p < 0.001), with the highest concentrations appearing in warm months when an abnormal lower dissolved oxygen content was observed at different sites, which were one to two orders of magnitude higher than other months. Compared with the control site, there were significantly higher CH4 concentrations in BBPA waters (p < 0.001), which was consistent with the higher CH4 in the sediment pore water. Methane dynamics in the water showed significant positive correlations with temperature, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, ammonia-N, and soluble reactive phosphorus (p < 0.05), but showed a significant inverse correlation with dissolved oxygen (p < 0.01). Redundancy analysis indicated dissolved oxygen made the largest contribution to CH4 dynamics in the BBPAs. A significant increase in the CH4 in water will turn BBPAs into temporary hot spots with substantial CH4 emissions with the appearance of black blooms. The results provide new insights into understanding future CH4 dynamics under globally prevailing algal blooms and climate change.

As a traditional Chinese alternative health care approach, acupuncture is gaining increasing attention and reputation in China and overseas. While becoming increasingly popular globally, some consumers and professionals still know little about the therapy and underlying mechanisms of acupuncture. Due to local superiority, there are large numbers of both clinical applications and mechanistic studies performed in China compared to countries overseas. Herein, this review attempts to give a comprehensive profile of the development, application, and mechanisms of acupuncture in treating major diseases. The number of clinical publications concerning acupuncture-treated neurological diseases, endocrine and metabolic diseases, circulatory diseases, respiratory diseases, etc. is first counted, and then, the application and therapeutic mechanisms of acupuncture on the predominant diseases in each category, including obesity, facial paralysis, sciatica, depression, hypertension, asthma, etc., are specifically discussed in this paper. The evolution of acupuncture tools and the rationality of acupoints are also discussed. This review not only summarizes the mechanisms of acupuncture but also provides useful information, such as specific acupoints and acupuncture procedures, for treating common diseases. Therefore, the current study provides useful information for both investigators and acupuncturists.

RESUMEN

Traditional Chinese medicine is an accepted and integral part of clinical cancer management alongside Western medicine in China. However, historically TCM physicians were unaware of the chemical constituents of their formulations, and the specific biological targets in the body. Through HPLC, flow cytometry, and other processes, researchers now have a much clearer picture of how herbal medicine works in conjunction with the immune system in cancer therapy. Among them, the regulation of tumor-related T cells plays the most important role in modulating tumor immunity by traditional Chinese medicine. Encouraging results have been well-documented, including an increase in T cell production along with their associated cytokines, enhanced regulation of Tregs and important T cell ratios, the formation and function of Tregs in tumor microenvironments, and the promotion of the number and function of normal T Cells to reduce conventional cancer therapy side effects. Chinese herbal medicine represents a rich field of research from which to draw further inspiration for future studies. While promising agents have already been identified, the vast majority of Chinese herbal mechanisms remain undiscovered. In this review, we summarize the effects and mechanisms of specific Chinese herbs and herbal decoctions on tumor related T cells.

Panax notoginseng (PN) has been used as a qi- and blood-activating (Huoxue) drug for thousands of years in China. It has also been widely used as an anticancer drug at present. As a Huoxue drug, the effect of PN on hematopoietic differentiation in tumor-bearing body has been paid more and more attention. Our research found that panax notoginseng saponins (PNS), especially panaxadiol saponins (PDS) and its aglucon 20(S)-Protopanaxdiol (PPD), could improve the immunosuppressive state by regulating the abnormal hematopoietic differentiation in a tumor-bearing body by multiple ways. An interesting phenomenon is that PDS reduced the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) via its inhibition effect on the granule-monocyte differentiation of spleen cells, which is associated with a decrease in the secretion of tumor MPO, G-CSF, PU.1, and C/EBPα. Otherwise, PDS increased the proportion of both hematopoietic stem cells and erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow, but inhibited spleen erythroid differentiation via inhibiting secretion of tumor EPO, GATA-1, and GATA-2. This study suggests that PNS regulated the tumor-induced abnormal granule-monocyte differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells, affecting the distribution and function of haemocytes in tumor-bearing mice.

Soil aquifer treatment (SAT), applied after activated sludge treatment (AST), has been widely used for wastewater reclamation. AST and SAT show potential for removing micropollutants, including pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). However, the role of sequential combination of AST and SAT on the biodegradation of PPCPs was not clear in previous studies. In this study, the removal characteristics of PPCPs in AST and SAT were evaluated to assess the legitimacy of sequential combination of AST and SAT. SAT showed effective removals of antibiotics (> 80%), including fluoroquinolones and macrolides by sorption, but poor removals of amide pharmaceuticals (i.e. carbamazepine and crotamiton) were observed in both AST and SAT. Additionally, biodegradation contributed to the effective removal of carboxylic PPCPs (i.e. ketoprofen and gemfibrozil) in both ASTs and SAT, but effective biodegradation of halogenated acid and polycyclic aromatic compounds (i.e. clofibric acid and naproxen) was observed only in SAT (82.1% and 81.8%, respectively). Furthermore, the microbial substrate metabolic patterns showed that amino acids, amines, and polymers were biodegradable in SAT, which was fit for the biodegradation characteristics of PPCPs in SAT. For microbial communities, Proteobacteria were dominant in AST and SAT, but Acidobacteria and Actinobacteria were more abundant in SAT than AST, which could contribute to the effective removals of halogenated acid in SAT. Considering PPCP biodegradation and substrate metabolism, SAT displays a wider range on the biodegradation than AST. Therefore, we conclude that these two processes can complement each other when used for controlling PPCPs.

Huge amounts of fly ash (FA) can be annually produced in power plants. Fly ash always contains high levels of arsenic (As) and selenium (Se) due to the preconcentration of these two elements during coal combustion process. It would be much concerned to screen their fractions and potential environmental behaviors in fly ash for beneficial use and treatment. Fast and practical methods for this purpose are urgently needed. Two fast and effective microwave-assisted sequential extraction schemes (MASE) were developed for fast screening As and Se fractions in fly ash for the first time. The extraction parameters including microwave irradiation time, temperature and power energy were optimized by comparing the results from MASE and the conventional scheme (Wenzel method). The results indicate that the extraction efficiency of As and Se in various fractions can be significantly accelerated by microwave irradiation. The whole procedure operation time can be significantly reduced from 24.5 h to 44 min by microwave assistance compared with the conventional shaking schemes. The recoveries of As and Se in the various extracted fractions were all above 80% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 8%. The developed methods were further confirmed by the validation of the certified reference material GBW08401 and fly ash samples from six power plants. The developed MASE methods are practical and effective for fast screening arsenic and selenium fractions in fly ash samples.

Cancer is one of the foremost causes of death globally and also the major stumbling block of increasing life expectancy. Although the primary treatment of surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy have greatly reduced the mortality of cancer, the survival rate is still low because of the metastasis of tumor, a range of adverse drug reactions, and drug resistance. For all this, it is relevant to mention that a growing amount of research has shown the anticarcinogenic effect of phytochemicals which can modulate the molecular pathways and cellular events include apoptosis, cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. However, their pharmacological potential is hindered by their low water solubility, low stability, poor absorption, and rapid metabolism. In this scenario, the development of nanotechnology has created novel formulations to maximize the potential use of phytochemicals in anticancer treatment. Nanocarriers can enhance the solubility and stability of phytochemicals, prolong their half-life in blood and even achieve site-targeting delivery. This review summarizes the advances in utilizing nanoparticles in cancer therapy. In particular, we introduce several applications of nanoparticles combined with apigenin, resveratrol, curcumin, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, 6-gingerol, and quercetin in cancer treatment.

BACKGROUND: This study will assess the effectiveness of electroacupuncture (EA) for pain in patients with osteosarcoma post surgery (OSPS). METHODS: In this study, we will comprehensively search the following electronic databases from inception to the present without language restrictions: Cochrane Library, EMBASE, MEDLINE, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, the Allied and Complementary Medicine Database, and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database. Two authors will independently carry out study selection, data extraction, and methodological assessments. RevMan 5.3 software will be used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The primary outcome is pain intensity. The secondary outcomes consist of event-free survival, overall survival, quality of life, and adverse events. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study will provide helpful evidence of EA treatment for patients with OSPS. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: PROSPERO CRD42019146696.
