RESUMEN

The rhizome of Rohdea chinensis (Baker) N.Tanaka (RRc) is a famous folk medicine for the treatment of carbuncles and pharyngitis. Steroidal saponins (SSs) were considered to be the most abundant active constituents in RRc. However, to date, the in-depth study of SSs is still lacking. This study was aimed to investigate the SSs profiles of RRc extract by HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS. Analysis was performed on an Agilent poroshell 120 EC-C18 column (2.1 mm × 100 mm, i.d., 2.7 µm) with 0.1% formic acid aqueous solution and acetonitrile as the mobile phase under gradient conditions. The results showed that 32 SSs including 20 furospirostanol, 11 spirostanol and 1 pseudo-spirostanol saponins were identified, 5 of which were reported in this plant for the first time. This is the first report on the analysis of SSs in RRc. This novel analysis method may stimulate further research regarding the identification of SSs in other plant species.

RESUMEN

Two new withaphysalin-type withanolides (18-O-ethylwithaphysalin R and 5-O-ethylphysaminimin C, 1 and 2), along with twelve known withanolides (3-14), were purified and identified from Physalis peruviana L. The chemical structures of these new isolates were elucidated through analyzing spectroscopic and HRESIMS data. All the obtained metabolites were appraised for their potential antiproliferative activity against the human breast cancer cell line MCF-7. Compound 7 was discovered to exhibit potent activity with an IC50 value of 3.51 µM and compounds 2, 6 and 14 showed weak cytotoxic effect.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of Tai Chi Chuan in treating various ailments has been well reported; however, its effect on back pain and lumbar spondylosis remains unclear. METHODS: We performed this meta-analysis under the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), and the research-associated search was performed over the provided databases: Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL in the period of 2008 to 2016, to recognize the related studies. We used the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale to measure the standard of the involved randomized control trials (RCTs). The accumulated outcomes with parameters of weighted mean difference (WMD) and confidence level (CI) of 95% were evaluated to discover the influence of Tai Chi over pain as well as dysfunction among the patients suffering from pain depending on the outcome model. RESULTS: Seven eligible studies with a total of 296 participants were identified that met inclusion criteria for the systematic review; in the forest plot analysis, it was noted that for 95% CI, the standardized mean difference found to be -1.58 (-1.79, -1.38) with the heterogeneity of 87%, thereby favoring Tai Chi over the control group; a comparison was drawn for Tai Chi with routine therapy against the routine therapy alone, where 95% CI for -1.22 [-1.47, -0.97] is observed for I 2 = 0% for the overall effect Z = 9.42 (P < 0.00001); pain intensity of Tai Chi was compared with the control group, where 95% CI for -1.62 [-2.09, -1.14] was observed for Z = 6.69 (P < 0.00001). The forest plot subgroup analysis of Tai Chi was compared with the control group for an unchanged lifestyle, where 95% CI for -2.26 [-2.61, -1.91] was observed for Z = 12.76 (P < 0.00001). CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that Tai Chi individually or with additional treatment along with routine physical exercises might reduce the pain and functional disorders for the patients suffering from back pain.

Background: Some studies published previously have shown a strong correlation between hypertension and psychological nature including impulsion emotion or mindfulness and relaxation temperament, among which mindfulness and relaxation temperament might have a benign influence on blood pressure, ameliorating the hypertension. However, the conclusion was not confirmed. Objective: The meta-analysis was performed to investigate the influence of mindfulness and relaxation on essential hypertension interventions and confirm the effects. Methods: Systematic searches were conducted in common English and Chinese electronic databases (i.e., PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database) from 1980 to 2020. A meta-analysis including 5 studies was performed using Rev Man 5.4.1 software to estimate the influence of mindfulness and relaxation on blood pressure, ameliorating the hypertension. Publication bias and heterogeneity of samples were tested using a funnel plot. Studies were analyzed using either a random-effect model or a fixed-effect model. Results: All the 5 studies investigated the influence of mindfulness and relaxation on diastolic and systolic blood pressure, with total 205 participants in the control group and 204 in the intervention group. The random-effects model (REM) was used to calculate the pooled effect for mindfulness and relaxation on diastolic blood pressure (I 2 = 0%, t 2 = 0.000, P=0.41). The random pooled effect size (MD) was 0.30 (95% CI = -0.81-1.42, P=0.59). REM was used to calculate the pooled effect for mindfulness and relaxation on systolic blood pressure (I 2 = 49%, t 2 = 3.05, P=0.10). The random pooled effect size (MD) was -1.05 (95% CI = -3.29-1.18, P=0.36). The results of this meta-analysis were influenced by publication bias to some degree. Conclusion: All the results showed less influence of mindfulness and relaxation might act on diastolic or systolic blood pressure, when mindfulness and relaxation are used to intervene in treating CVD and hypertension.

Rosanortriterpenes A-B (RTA and RTB), two nortriterpenoids, are characteristic constituents in the fruits of Rosa laevigata var. leiocapus. However, pharmacological studies on these compounds are still scarce. In the present study, we aim to investigate the anti-inflammatory mechanisms associated with the effects of RTA-B in RAW264.7 macrophages and LO2 cells by detecting cell viabilities, nitric oxide (NO) production, tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) production. Simultaneously, the anti-inflammatory action mechanisms of these two compounds were illustrated through western blot assay. Besides, the antihepatic fibrosis activities of these compounds have also been explored. The results demonstrated that RTA and RTB inhibited the production of NO, TNF-α, and IL-6 and suppressed liver fibrosis. RTA and RTB treatment also greatly inhibited the activation of NF-kappaB (NF-κB) pathway. Our study confirmed the promising anti-inflammatory and anti-liver fibrosis actions of RTA-B, suggesting that they might be developed as alternative and promising drugs for the treatment of hepatic inflammatory and fibrotic diseases.

AIM OF THE STUDY: This study evaluates the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of the ethanol and aqueous extracts of a Tibetan herb Pterocephalus hookeri (C.B. Clarke) Höeck to provide experimental evidence for its traditional use such as cold, flu and rheumatoid arthritis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Investigations on the analgesic effects of P. hookeri (C.B. Clarke) Höeck were carried out, including hot-plate test and acetic acid-induced writhing. The anti-inflammatory activities were observed by utilizing the following models: carrageenin-induced edema of the hind paw of rats, cotton pellet-induced granuloma formation in rats, acetic acid-induced permeability, and xylene-induced ear edema in mice. The effects of the administration of indomethacin were also studied. RESULTS: It has been shown that the ethanol and aqueous extracts significantly increased the hot-plate pain threshold and reduced acetic acid-induced writhing response in mice. The ethanol and aqueous extracts remarkably inhibited the increase in vascular permeability induced by acetic acid and ear edema induced by xylene. The ethanol extract also significantly decreased the carrageenin-induced rat paw edema perimeter and inhibited the increase of granuloma weight. CONCLUSION: The results show that the ethanol and aqueous extracts have both central and peripheral analgesic activities and as anti-inflammatory effects, supporting the traditional application of this herb in treating various diseases associated with inflammation and pain.

1-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) causes the damage of dopaminergic neurons as seen in Parkinson's disease (PD). Oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of PD. Baicalein, isolated from the traditional Chinese herbal medicine Huangqin (Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi), has been shown to have antioxidant effects. Here we investigated the effect of baicalein on MPTP-induced neurotoxicity in mice. Pretreatment with baicalein for a week was followed by challenge with MPTP for 4 consecutive days; the subsequent behavioral, biochemical and immunohistochemical manifestations in mice were determined and compared to those in untreated mice and mice challenged only with MPTP. The present study showed that baicalein could improve the abnormal behavior in MPTP-treated mice. The protective effect may be caused by increasing the levels of DA and 5-HT in the striatum, increasing the counts of dopaminergic neurons, inhibiting oxidative stress and the astroglia response. These results suggest that baicalein possesses potent neuroprotective activity and may be a potential anti-Parkinson's disease drug that is worthy of further study.

One new lignan, rostellulin A ( 1), four known lignans, justin B ( 2), justicidin C ( 3), cilinaphthalide A ( 4), and justicidin A ( 5), and four known triterpenoids, ursolic acid ( 6), euscaphic acid ( 7), 2 alpha-hydroxyursolic acid ( 8), and tormentic acid ( 9), have been isolated from the whole plants of Rostellularia procumbens. Their structures were established on the basis of spectral data, including extensive NMR experiments. To our knowledge, compounds 6 - 9 are known compounds but not previously isolated from R. procumbens, 4 was previously reported from other Rostellularia species. Antibacterial activities of 1 - 9 were evaluated against eight bacterial strains with the agar dilution method, and they were found to possess antimicrobial activity with MIC values in the range of 1.56 - 100 microg/mL. None of the lignans exhibited cytotoxic activity against HCT-8 and Bel-7402 cells at concentrations up to 5 microg/mL.

OBJECTIVE: To present a new approach for the research of effective components extracted from compounds of traditional Chinese medicine and their action mechanisms by high-throughput screening assay. METHODS: We observed the anti-oxidation activities of 240 sequential components (L1-L120 and A1-A120) extracted from Xiaoxuming Recipe, the effects of these components on SH-SY5Y cells with H(2)O(2)-induced and L-glutamic acid-induced damages and the levels of resting calcium ion in neurocytes of rats. RESULTS: Some components (L1-L40, A100-A120) extracted from Xiaoxuming Recipe had the corresponding effects listed above. The combination of these components was regarded as the groups of effective components of Xiaoxuming Recipe in treating sequelae resulting from brain ischemia. CONCLUSION: Xiaoxuming Recipe has protective effect on brain-ischemia-induced damages through the actions of multiple components with multiple targets.
