RESUMEN
INTRODUCTION: Adipose tissue fibrosis is a typical feature of adipose tissue dysfunction in obese individuals, which is closely related to metabolic diseases. OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect and mechanism of Saponins from Panax japonicus (SPJ) on adipose tissue fibrosis in obese mice induced by high fat diet (HFD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We established a HFD induced obese mice model. Then the obese mice were treated with 90 mg/kg SPJ by oral gavage for 10 weeks. The levels of adipose tissue fibrosis and molecules related to signalling pathways were measured. Then the effects of SPJ on TGFß1-induced fibrosis in 3T3-L1 differentiated adipocytes were evaluated. RESULTS: SPJ reduced body weight, fat accumulation, and improved glucose and lipid metabolism in obese mice. SPJ decreased collagen deposition and expressions of fibrotic genes in epididymal white adipose tissue (eWAT) of obese mice. SPJ decreased the levels of TGFß1 protein and pSmad2, and increased the expression of PPARγ and PGC1α, thus alleviating oxidative stress in eWAT. Consistently, SPJ inhibited TGFß1-induced fibrosis in 3T3-L1 differentiated adipocytes. CONCLUSIONS: SPJ may alleviate adipose tissue fibrosis and improve obesity by inhibiting TGFß1/Smad2 and activating PPARγ/PGC1α pathway. SPJ is expected to become an efficient medicine for treatment of obesity.

Orthokeratology (OK) is widely used to slow the progression of myopia. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) provides sufficient low energy to change the cellular function. This research is aimed at verifying the hypothesis that LLLT treatment could control myopia progression and comparing the abilities of OK lenses and LLLT to control the refractive error of myopia. Eighty-one children (81 eyes) who wore OK lenses, 74 children (74 eyes) who underwent LLLT treatment, and 74 children (74 eyes) who wore single-vision distance spectacles for 6 months were included. Changes in axial length (AL) were 0.23 ± 0.06 mm for children wearing spectacles, 0.06 ± 0.15 mm for children wearing OK lens, and -0.06 ± 0.15 mm for children treated with LLLT for 6 months. Changes in subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFChT) observed at the 6-month examination were -16.84 ± 7.85 µm, 14.98 ± 22.50 µm, and 35.30 ± 31.75 µm for the control group, OK group, and LLLT group, respectively. Increases in AL at 1 month and 6 months were significantly associated with age at LLLT treatment. Changes in AL were significantly correlated with the baseline spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and baseline AL in the OK and LLLT groups. Increases in SFChT at 1 month and 6 months were positively associated with age at enrolment for children wearing OK lens. At 6 months, axial elongation had decelerated in OK lens-wearers and LLLT-treated children. Slightly better myopia control was observed with LLLT treatment than with overnight OK lens-wearing. Evaluations of age, SER, and AL can enhance screening for high-risk myopia, improve the myopia prognosis, and help determine suitable control methods yielding the most benefits.

OBJECTIVE: To reveal the quality variation of polysaccharides, triterpenoids and proteins in spores and fruiting bodies of Ganoderma lucidum from producing areas, different varieties, harvesting parts and periods, and wall-breaking treatments. METHOD: Spores and fruiting bodies from varieties of Longzhi No. 1 and Hunong No. 1 were collected as test samples, together with wall-broken spores sold in domestic main producing areas. The anthrone-sulfuric acid colorimetric method was used to determine the content of total polysaccharides. The vanillin-glacial acetic acid-perchloric acid colorimetric method was used to determine the content of total triterpenoids. The Lowry method was used to determine the content of total proteins. RESULT: The content ranges of total polysaccharides, total triterpenoids, and total proteins from 6 domestic main producing areas were 0.40% - 2.25%, 1.36%-3.15% and 0.74% -1.91% respectively. The content ranges of total polysaccharides, triterpenoids, and proteins in the fruiting bodies from 2 varieties cultured in Zhejiang were 0.25% -1.42%, 0.44% -1.42% and 1.82% -3.67% respectively. In addition, the ranges of samples from wall-unbroken spores were 0.41% - 0.91%, 0.09% - 0.12%, 0.78% - 0.90% respectively and wall-broken spores are 1.03% - 2.25%, 1.89% - 3.15%, 0.96% - 1.04% respectively. CONCLUSION: There are significant differences in the contents of main chemical ingredients of wall-broken G. lucidum spores saled in the markets. The samples from Zhejiang contain high content of total polysaccharides and triterpenoids, and samples from Fujian contains more proteins. Between the 2 major varieties cultured in Zhejiang, Longzhi No. 1 contains higher content of triterpenoids, but Hunong No. 1 has more polysaccharides. Contents of triterpenoids and polysaccharides from wall-broken spores are much higher than those of fruiting bodies. The stipes from fruiting bodies contains more polysaccharides than those of the pileus, while the triterpenoids contents are higher in the pileus than stipes. The pileus and stipes collected in the second year contain higher content of polysaccharides than the first year's samples, but the contents of triterpenoids are lower. Wall-breaking treatment would significantly improve the extraction and dissolution rate of total triterpenoids and polysaccharides.

To establish the vascular endothelial cell (VEC) injury model of blood stasis syndrome (BSS) based on integration of disease identification and syndrome differentiation is one of the aspects of the research on BSS model. This paper discussed the necessity and feasibility of the establishment of that model, and suggested that the model is of important academic value, far-reaching scientific research value and active clinic value.

As the organ of supreme superiority over any other organ of the body, the heart controls the function of the whole body. The lung governs the motions of Qi(vital energy), as have long been established in the basic theories in traditional Chinese medicine, but in this paper, the authors attempt to define the close relations between the heart and Qi by proposing that the heart also governs Qi, through either immediate and indirect actions. The heart plays an important role in the motion, generation and function regulation of Qi, with also impact on the changes of Qi ji, it is therefore of great importance to obtain a thorough comprehension of the associations between the two facets of Qi government by the lung and the heart, for the purpose of accurate clinical identification of the diseases and consequently appropriate treatment.
