Background: This study aims to investigate the impact and safety of combining maternal voice stimulation with gravity feeding on low-birth-weight preterm infants. The research focuses on key outcomes such as gastric tube indwelling time, feeding transition time, adequate gastrointestinal nutrition time, recovery of birth weight time, length of hospital stay, and oral motor function in preterm infants. Methods: A total of 150 low birth weight preterm infants meeting inclusion criteria were recruited from the neonatal care unit and randomly assigned to three groups: traditional nasal feeding, gravity feeding with a homemade bracket, and a combined group receiving both gravity feeding and maternal voice stimulation. The groups were compared using parameters such as feeding intolerance incidence, gastric tube indwelling time, feeding transition time, adequate gastrointestinal nutrition time, recovery of birth weight time, hospital stay, and oral motor function. Results: The combined group exhibited a significantly lower incidence of feeding intolerance (26% lower than traditional nasal feeding, 18% lower than gravity feeding, P < .001). The traditional nasal feeding group had the highest incidence at 62%. The combined group showed a shorter indwelling time (19.01 ± 11.67 days), compared to the gravity feeding group (23.50 ± 13.04 days) and the traditional nasogastric feeding group (27.43 ± 11.91 days, P = .001). The combined group had a shorter hospital stay (27.09 ± 14.16 days) compared to the gravity feeding group (32.74 ± 13.32 days) and the traditional nasogastric feeding group (33.84 ± 12.42 days, P = .013). The combined group demonstrated a slightly longer recovery time (11.56 ± 4.08 days) than the gravity feeding group (11.14 ± 4.76 days) but significantly shorter than the traditional nasogastric feeding group (14.44 ± 5.42 days, P = .003). The combined group exhibited the highest improvement in oral motor function at 4 weeks after feeding (17.81 ± 0.39 points), surpassing both the gravity feeding group (16.10 ± 0.23 points) and the traditional nasogastric feeding group (15.15 ± 0.07 points, P < .001). The combined group demonstrated a significantly lower feeding transition time than the traditional nasal feeding group (P < .05) and comparable time to the gravity feeding group (P > .05). All the comparison results were statistically significant. Conclusion: Maternal voice stimulation combined with gravity feeding shows promising positive effects and high safety for low-birth-weight preterm infants. The combined approach outperformed both gravity feeding alone and traditional nasogastric feeding across various critical parameters. These findings support the potential clinical applicability and merit further consideration for wider implementation as a feeding method in neonatal care settings. Clinical Significance: The observed reductions in feeding intolerance, shortened gastric tube indwelling time, and enhanced oral motor function in low-birth-weight preterm infants receiving combined maternal voice stimulation and gravity feeding highlight a promising clinical approach. These improvements signify the potential for earlier oral feeding initiation, shorter hospital stays, and better overall outcomes in the care of these vulnerable infants. Limitations: This study is limited by its single-center design, potential selection bias, and the absence of blinding. Uncontrolled confounding factors may influence results, and long-term outcomes were not assessed. Implications for Practice: Healthcare professionals should cautiously consider the observed benefits of combining maternal voice stimulation with gravity feeding, recognizing the study's limitations. Further research is warranted to validate these findings and explore long-term implications for the care of low-birth-weight preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Zinc Gluconate (ZG) is a safe and effective supplement for zinc. However, there is limited research on the optimal dosage for intravenous injection and the safety evaluation of animal models for ZG. This study aims to determine the safe dose range of ZG for intravenous injection in C57BL/6J mice. METHODS: A Dose titration experiment was conducted to determine the LD50 and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) of ZG in mice. Based on the LD50, four sub-lethal doses (SLD) of ZG were evaluated. Following three injections of each SLD and monitoring for seven days, serum zinc levels were measured, and pathological changes in the liver, kidney, and spleen tissues of mice were determined by histological staining. RESULTS: The dose titration experiment determined the LD50 of ZG in mice to be 39.6 mg/kg, with a 95%CI of 31.8-49.3 mg/kg. There was a statistically significant difference in the overall serum zinc levels (H = 36.912, P < 0.001) following SLD administration. Pairwise comparisons showed that the serum zinc levels of the 1/2 LD50 and 3/4 LD50 groups were significantly higher than those of the control group (P < 0.001); the serum zinc level of the 3/4 LD50 group was significantly higher than those of the 1/8 LD50 and 1/4 LD50 groups (P < 0.05). There was a positive correlation between the different SLDs of ZG and the serum zinc levels in mice (rs = 0.973, P < 0.001). H&E staining showed no significant histological abnormalities or lesions in the liver, kidney, and spleen tissues of mice in all experimental groups. CONCLUSION: The appropriate dose range of ZG for intravenous injection in C57BL/6J mice was clarified, providing a reference for future experimental research.

Background: Shoulder-hand syndrome (SHS) is a common complication after stroke, and SHS-induced pain significantly hampers patients' overall recovery. As an alternative therapy for pain relief, acupuncture has certain advantages in alleviating pain caused by SHS after stroke. However, choosing the best treatment plan from a variety of acupuncture options is still a serious challenge in clinical practice. Therefore, we conducted this Bayesian network meta-analysis to comprehensively compare the effectiveness of various acupuncture treatment methods. Methods: We systematically searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture treatment in patients with post-stroke SHS published in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science until 9 March 2023. We used the Cochrane bias risk assessment tool to assess the bias risk in the included original studies. Results: A total of 50 RCTs involving 3,999 subjects were included, comprising 19 types of effective acupuncture interventions. Compared to single rehabilitation training, the top three interventions for VAS improvement were floating needle [VAS = -2.54 (95% CI: -4.37 to -0.69)], rehabilitation + catgut embedding [VAS = -2.51 (95% CI: -4.33 to -0.68)], and other multi-needle acupuncture combinations [VAS = -2.32 (95% CI: -3.68 to -0.94)]. The top three interventions for improving the Fugl-Meyer score were eye acupuncture [Meyer = 15.73 (95% CI: 3.4627.95)], other multi-needle acupuncture combinations [Meyer = 12.22 (95% CI: 5.1919.34)], and traditional western medicine + acupuncture + traditional Chinese medicine [Meyer = 11.96 (95% CI: -0.59 to 24.63)]. Conclusion: Multiple acupuncture methods are significantly effective in improving pain and upper limb motor function in post-stroke SHS, with relatively few adverse events; thus, acupuncture can be promoted. BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a common and complex syndrome characterized by the presence of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus. Chinese medicine has been recently found to show good efficacy in treating endometriosis. Our previous results revealed that Maqian fruit essential oil (MQEO) could inhibit the proliferation and induce apoptosis of ectopic endometrial stromal cells (EESCs), but the mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we aim to explore the molecular mechanism of MQEO's specific effects in EESCs. METHODS: We conducted a quantitative proteomics analysis by iTRAQ on EESCs treated with MQEO or DMSO. Then deep analysis was performed based on differentially expressed proteins, including Gene Ontology enrichment analysis, pathway enrichment analysis and protein interaction analysis. Candidate protein targets were subsequently verified by western blotting. RESULTS: Among 6575 identified proteins, 435 proteins exhibited altered expression levels in MQEO-treated EESCs. Of these proteins, most were distributed in signal transduction as well as immune system and the most significantly altered pathway was complement and coagulation cascades. Moreover, two differentially expressed proteins (Heme oxygenase 1 and Acyl-CoA 6-desaturase) were verified and they can be potential biomarkers for endometriosis treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Our proteomic analysis revealed distinct protein expression patterns induced by MQEO treatment in EESCs, highlighting the potential of MQEO for endometriosis treatment and biomarker discovery.

Doxorubicin (DOX) has aroused contradiction between its potent anti-tumor capacity and severe cardiotoxicity. Galangin (Gal) possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic activities. We aimed to explore the role and underlying mechanisms of Gal on DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. Mice were intraperitoneally injected with DOX (3 mg/kg, every 2 days for 2 weeks) to generate cardiotoxicity model and Gal (15 mg/kg, 2 weeks) was co-administered via gavage daily. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) specific inhibitor, ML385, was employed to explore the underlying mechanisms. Compared to DOX-insulted mice, Gal effectively improved cardiac dysfunction and ameliorated myocardial damage. DOX-induced increase of reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, and NADPH oxidase activity and downregulation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were blunted by Gal. Gal also markedly blocked increase of IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α in DOX-insulted heart. Mechanistically, Gal reversed DOX-induced downregulation of Nrf2, HO-1, and promoted nuclear translocation of Nrf2. ML385 markedly blunted the cardioprotective effects of Gal, as well as inhibitive effects on oxidative stress and inflammation. Gal ameliorates DOX-induced cardiotoxicity by suppressing oxidative stress and inflammation via activating Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. Gal may serve as a promising cardioprotective agent for DOX-induced cardiotoxicity.

Preventing islet ß-cells death is crucial for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Currently, clinical drugs are being developed to improve the quality of T2DM care and self-care, but drugs focused on reducing islets ß-cell death are lacking. Given that ß-cell death in T2DM is dominated ultimately by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), eliminating excessive ROS in ß-cells is a highly promising therapeutic strategy. Nevertheless, no antioxidants have been approved for T2DM therapy because most of them cannot meet the long-term and stable elimination of ROS in ß-cells without eliciting toxic side-effects. Here, it is proposed to restore the endogenous antioxidant capacity of ß-cells to efficiently prevent ß-cell death using selenium nanodots (SENDs), a prodrug of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1). SENDs not only scavenge ROS effectively, but also "send" selenium precisely to ß-cells with ROS response to greatly enhance the antioxidant capacity of ß-cells by increasing GPX1 expression. Therefore, SENDs greatly rescue ß-cells by restoring mitophagy and alleviating endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS), and demonstrate much stronger efficacy than the first-line drug metformin for T2DM treatment. Overall, this strategy highlights the great clinical application prospects of SENDs, offering a paradigm for an antioxidant enzyme prodrug for T2DM treatment.

BACKGROUND: Doxorubicin (DOX) is a potent anticancer chemotherapeutic agent whose clinical application is substantially constrained by its cardiotoxicity. The pathophysiology of DOX-induced cardiotoxicity manifests as cardiomyocyte pyroptosis and inflammation. Amentoflavone (AMF) is a naturally occurring biflavone possessing anti-pyroptotic and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the mechanism through which AMF alleviates DOX-induced cardiotoxicity remains undetermined. PURPOSE: This study aimed at investigating the role of AMF in alleviating DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: To assess the in vivo effect of AMF, DOX was intraperitoneally administered into a mouse model to induce cardiotoxicity. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms, the activities of STING/NLRP3 were quantified using the NLRP3 agonist nigericin and the STING agonist amidobenzimidazole (ABZI). Primary cardiomyocytes isolated from neonatal Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with saline (vehicle) or DOX with or without AMF and/or ABZI. The echocardiogram, haemodynamics, cardiac injury markers, heart/body weight ratio, and pathological alterations were monitored; the STING/NLRP3 pathway-associated proteins were detected by western blot and cardiomyocyte pyroptosis was analysed by immunofluorescence staining of cleaved N-terminal GSDMD and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, we evaluated the potential of AMF in compromising the anticancer effects of DOX in human breast cancer cell lines. RESULTS: AMF substantially alleviated cardiac dysfunction and reduced heart/body weight ratio and myocardial damage in mice models of DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. AMF effectively suppressed DOX-mediated upregulation of IL-1ß, IL-18, TNF-α, and pyroptosis-related proteins, including NLRP3, cleaved caspase-1, and cleaved N-terminal GSDMD. The levels of apoptosis-related proteins, namely Bax, cleaved caspase-3, and BCL-2 were not affected. In addition, AMF inhibited STING phosphorylation in DOX-affected hearts. Intriguingly, the administration of nigericin or ABZI dampened the cardioprotective effects of AMF. The in vitro anti-pyroptotic effect of AMF was demonstrated in attenuating the DOX-induced reduction in cardiomyocyte cell viability, upregulation of cleaved N-terminal GSDMD, and pyroptotic morphology alteration at the microstructural level. AMF exhibited a synergistic effect with DOX to reduce the viability of human breast cancer cells. CONCLUSION: AMF alleviates DOX-induced cardiotoxicity by suppressing cardiomyocyte pyroptosis and inflammation via inhibition of the STING/NLRP3 signalling pathway, thereby validating its efficacy as a cardioprotective agent.

BACKGROUND: Wogonin, a flavone isolated from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, is a commonly used phytochemical with anti-inflammatory and antitumor properties. However, the antiviral activity of wogonin against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) has not been reported. PURPOSE: The current study aimed to explore whether wogonin can suppress latent HIV-1 reactivation and the mechanism of wogonin in inhibiting proviral HIV-1 transcription. METHODS: We assessed the effects of wogonin on HIV-1 reactivation using flow cytometry, cytotoxicity assay, quantitative PCR (qPCR), viral quality assurance (VQA), and western blot analysis. RESULTS: Wogonin, a flavone isolated from S. baicalensis, significantly inhibited the reactivation of latent HIV-1 in cellular models and in primary CD4+ T cells from antiretroviral therapy (ART)-suppressed individuals ex vivo. Wogonin exhibited low cytotoxicity and long-lasting inhibition of HIV-1 transcription. Triptolide is a latency-promoting agent (LPA) that inhibits HIV-1 transcription and replication; wogonin had a stronger ability to inhibit HIV-1 latent reactivation than triptolide. Mechanistically, wogonin inhibited the reactivation of latent HIV-1 by inhibiting the expression of p300, a histone acetyltransferase, and decreasing the crotonylation of histone H3/H4 in the HIV-1 promoter region. CONCLUSION: Our study found that wogonin is a novel LPA that can inhibit HIV-1 transcription by HIV-1 epigenetic silencing, which could bear promising significance for future applications of HIV-1 functional cure.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The traditional method of taking Chinese Medicine involves creating a decoction by cooking medicinal Chinese herbs. However, this method has become less popular, being replaced by the more convenient method of consuming concentrated Chinese herbal extracts, which creates challenges related to the complexity of stacking multiple formulas. METHODS: We developed the Chinese Intelligence Prescription System (CIPS) to simplify the prescription process. In this study, we used data from our institutions pharmacy to calculate the number of reductions, average dispensing time, and resulting cost savings. RESULTS: The mean number of prescriptions was reduced from 8.19 ± 3.65 to 7.37 ± 3.34 ([Formula: see text]). The reduction in the number of prescriptions directly resulted in decreased dispensing time, reducing it from 1.79 ± 0.25 to 1.63 ± 0.66 min ([Formula: see text]). The reduced dispensing time totaled 3.75 h per month per pharmacist, equivalent to an annual labor cost savings of $15,488 NTD per pharmacist. In addition, drug loss was reduced during the prescription process, with a mean savings of $4,517 NTD per year. The combined savings adds up to a not insignificant $20,005 NTD per year per pharmacist. When taking all TCM clinics/hospitals in Taiwan into account, the total annual savings would be $77 million NTD. CONCLUSION: CIPS assists clinicians and pharmacists to formulate precise prescriptions in a clinical setting to simplify the dispensing process while reducing medical resource waste and labor costs.

This study aimed to establish an isotope dilution LC-MS/MS method for the determination of folic acid, 5-formyltetrahydrofolate and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate in human serum. This method was then used to quantify these three folate forms in the healthy adult population and supplement users. A stable 96-well solid-phase extraction system was used to prepare serum samples. The highly sensitive method was established using a Shimadzu LCMS-8060NX. The linearity was good in the range of 0.1-10 nmol/l for folic acid and 5-formyltetrahydrofolate and 1.0-100 nmol/l for 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. The accuracy and precision were good. The method was sensitive, robust and high-throughput and could be used for the routine clinical monitoring of these three folate forms in the Chinese population.

Seasonal algal blooms produce a high risk for water supply safety. To explore the mechanism of seasonal algal blooms in northern eutrophic stratified reservoirs, the combination of taxonomic and functional classifications, local weighted regression (LOWESS), and Boundary line analysis (BLA) were employed to obtain the succession features and environmental thresholds of seasonal (e.g., spring and summer) algal blooms, based on the long-term and high-frequency monitoring from 2017 to 2020 in Lijiahe Reservoir. The results showed that:① the succession and response mechanisms of algal blooms were different in spring and summer. In detail, Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, and Dinoflagellates (e.g., low-temperature, small, high surface-to-volume genera) dominated in spring, whereas Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, and Cyanobacteria (e.g., high-temperature, large or colonial, low surface-to-volume genera) dominated in summer. The differences in physiological and morphological characteristics of algae were the internal cause triggering seasonal algal blooms. ② The main drivers of algal blooms were different in spring and summer. Spring blooms were controlled by water temperature (WT), mixing depth (i.e., Zmix), and light availability (i.e., Zeu/Zmix), whereas summer blooms were jointly influenced by WT, Zmix, Zeu/Zmix, and total phosphorus (TP). The differences in the changes of the major drivers were external causes triggering seasonal algal blooms. ③ The water environment thresholds starting seasonal algal blooms were different in spring and summer. The thresholds of WT, Zmix, and Zeu/Zmix in spring were>9.4℃, <10.9 m, and>0.24, respectively, whereas the thresholds of WT, Zmix, Zeu/Zmix, and TP in summer were>16.0℃, <11.6 m, >0.16, and>0.011 mg·L-1, respectively. Based on the research on the mechanism of seasonal algal blooms and related thresholds, this work will provide a reference for the control of subsequent algal blooms.

OBJECTIVE: Estimating the deterioration paths of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients is critical for physicians' decisions and patient management. A novel, hierarchical multilabel graph attention-based method aims to predict patient deterioration paths more effectively. Applied to a CHB patient data set, it offers strong predictive utilities and clinical value. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The proposed method incorporates patients' responses to medications, diagnosis event sequences, and outcome dependencies to estimate deterioration paths. From the electronic health records maintained by a major healthcare organization in Taiwan, we collect clinical data about 177 959 patients diagnosed with hepatitis B virus infection. We use this sample to evaluate the proposed method's predictive efficacy relative to 9 existing methods, as measured by precision, recall, F-measure, and area under the curve (AUC). RESULTS: We use 20% of the sample as holdouts to test each method's prediction performance. The results indicate that our method consistently and significantly outperforms all benchmark methods. It attains the highest AUC, with a 4.8% improvement over the best-performing benchmark, as well as 20.9% and 11.4% improvements in precision and F-measures, respectively. The comparative results demonstrate that our method is more effective for predicting CHB patients' deterioration paths than existing predictive methods. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The proposed method underscores the value of patient-medication interactions, temporal sequential patterns of distinct diagnosis, and patient outcome dependencies for capturing dynamics that underpin patient deterioration over time. Its efficacious estimates grant physicians a more holistic view of patient progressions and can enhance their clinical decision-making and patient management.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common complication after myocardial infarction (MI) that can seriously affect the prognosis of MI. PURPOSE: To investigate whether formononetin could ameliorate MI injury and depressive behaviours in a mouse model of MI with depression and elucidate its underlying molecular mechanisms. METHODS: Haemodynamic measurements (systolic blood pressure (SYS), the maximum rate of rise of LV pressure (± dp/dtmax)) and behavior tests (tail suspension test, sucrose preference test, forced swimming test) were used to evaluate the effects of formononetin on male C57BL/6N mice after left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery ligation and chronic unpredictable stress. RT-qPCR, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence analysis, western blotting, molecular docking technology, surface plasmon resonance and gene-directed mutagenesis were used to clarify the underlying mechanism. RESULTS: Formononetin significantly suppressed the depressive behaviours and improved cardiac dysfunction in MI with depression mice model. Formononetin inhibited M1 polarization in macrophages/microglia, while promoting M2 polarization. Importantly, elevated serum IL-6 and IL-17A levels were found in patient with MI, and the patient serum induced M1 microglial polarization; however, formononetin reversed the polarization. Further mechanistic studies showed that formononetin inhibited GSK-3ß activity and downstream Notch1 and C/EBPα signaling pathways. Covalent molecular docking showed that formononetin bound to Cys199 of GSK-3ß and it has a high affinity for GSK-3ß. When Cys199 was mutation, the inhibitory effect of formononetin on GSK-3ß activity and M1 polarization in macrophages/microglia were also partly blocked. CONCLUSIONS: Our results firstly uncovered that formononetin improved cardiac function and suppressed depressive behaviours in mice after MI with depression by targeting GSK-3ß to regulate macrophage/microglial polarization. More importantly, IL-6 and IL-17A produced after MI may cause neuroinflammation, which might be the key factors for depression. Formononetin may be a potential drug for treating MI with depression.

Speech perception depends on the dynamic interplay of bottom-up and top-down information along a hierarchically organized cortical network. Here, we test, for the first time in the human brain, whether neural processing of attended speech is dynamically modulated by task demand using a context-free discrimination paradigm. Electroencephalographic signals were recorded during 3 parallel experiments that differed only in the phonological feature of discrimination (word, vowel, and lexical tone, respectively). The event-related potentials (ERPs) revealed the task modulation of speech processing at approximately 200 ms (P2) after stimulus onset, probably influencing what phonological information to retain in memory. For the phonological comparison of sequential words, task modulation occurred later at approximately 300 ms (N3 and P3), reflecting the engagement of task-specific cognitive processes. The ERP results were consistent with the changes in delta-theta neural oscillations, suggesting the involvement of cortical tracking of speech envelopes. The study thus provides neurophysiological evidence for goal-oriented modulation of attended speech and calls for speech perception models incorporating limited memory capacity and goal-oriented optimization mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension (HPH) is one of the fatal pathologies developed under hypobaric hypoxia and eventually leads to right ventricular (RV) remodeling and RV failure. Clinically, the mortality rate of RV failure caused by HPH is high and lacks effective drugs. Xinyang Tablet (XYT), a traditional Chinese medicine exhibits significant efficacy in the treatment of congestive heart failure and cardiac dysfunction. However, the effects of XYT on chronic hypoxia-induced RV failure are not clear. METHODS: The content of XYT was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were housed in a hypobaric chamber (equal to the parameter in altitude 5500 m) for 21 days to obtain the RV remodeling model. Electrocardiogram (ECG) and hemodynamic parameters were measured by iWorx Acquisition & Analysis System. Pathological morphological changes in the RV and pulmonary vessels were observed by H&E staining and Masson's trichrome staining. Myocardial apoptosis was tested by TUNEL assay. Protein expression levels of TNF-α, IL-6, Bax, Bcl-2, and caspase-3 in the RV and H9c2 cells were detected by western blot. Meanwhile, H9c2 cells were induced by CoCl2 to establish a hypoxia injury model to verify the protective effect and mechanisms of XYT. A CCK-8 assay was performed to determine the viability of H9c2 cells. CoCl2-induced apoptosis was detected by Annexin-FITC/PI flow cytometry and Hoechst 33,258 staining. RESULTS: XYT remarkably improved RV hemodynamic disorder and ECG parameters. XYT attenuated hypoxia-induced pathological injury in RV and pulmonary vessels. We also observed that XYT treatment decreased the expression levels of TNF-α, IL-6, Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, and the numbers of myocardial apoptosis in RV. In H9c2 myocardial hypoxia model, XYT protected H9c2 cells against Cobalt chloride (CoCl2)-induced apoptosis. We also found that XYT could antagonize CoCl2-induced apoptosis through upregulating Bcl-2, inhibiting Bax and caspase-3 expression. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that XYT improved hypoxia-induced RV remodeling and protected against cardiac injury by inhibiting apoptosis pathway in vivo and vitro models, which may be a promising therapeutic strategy for clinical management of hypoxia-induced cardiac injury.

The essential oil extracted from Cinnamomum camphora leaves is a mixture of volatile compounds, mainly terpenes, and is widely used in medicine, perfume and chemical industries. In this study, the extraction processes of essential oil from Cinnamomum camphora leaves by steam distillation and supercritical CO2 extraction were summarized and compared, and the camphor tree essential oil was detected by GC/MS. The extraction rate of essential oil extracted by steam distillation is less than 0.5%, while that of supercritical CO2 extraction is 4.63% at 25 MPa, 45 °C and 2.5 h. GC/MS identified 21 and 42 compounds, respectively. The content of alcohols in the essential oil is more than 35%, and that of terpenoids is more than 80%. The steam extraction method can extract volatile substances with a low boiling point and more esters and epoxides; The supercritical method is suitable for extracting weak polar substances with a high alcohol content. Supercritical CO2 extraction can selectively extract essential oil components and effectively prevent oxidation and the escape of heat sensitive substances.

Background: Prior investigation revealed that elevated serum total homocysteine (tHcy) are strongly correlated with atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence. Herein, the goal of this study was to elucidate whether folic acid (FA) treatment reduced AF recurrence following radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA). Methods: To conduct this retrospective research, we included consecutive H-type hypertensive AF patients, who were treated with first RFCA, between January 2010 and January 2022. We assessed the AF recurrence risk between patients who were taking 10 mg enalapril and 0.8 mg FA in a single-pill combination (enalapril-FA) daily and those who were taking a pill of 10 mg enalapril only. Outcomes were compared using the propensity-score matched analysis. Cox regression model was employed for the evaluation of AF recurrence events. Results: Out of 2,714 patients, 645 patients receiving enalapril and 282 patients receiving enalapril-FA were included for analysis. Following propensity score matching, 239 patients remained in each group. These patients were followed-up for a median of 379 (137-596) days, and revealed that the enalapril-FA patients had drastically reduced AF recurrence, compared to the enalapril patients [adjusted hazard ratio (HR), 0.68; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.48-0.97; P = 0.029]. Apart from this, no interactions were detected in the subgroup analysis. Conclusion: In H-type hypertensive AF patients who were treated with first RFCA, FA supplementation was correlated with a reduced AF recurrence risk.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the best option among traditional Chinese exercises for reducing oxidative stress in middle-aged and older adults, using a network meta-analysis. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, and CNKI databases were used. We searched randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on middle-aged and older adults to influence oxidative stress by any traditional Chinese exercises from the beginning to 20 January 2022. A network meta-analysis of randomized control trials was performed comparing the changes in the concentration of glutathione peroxidase (GPX), malondialdehyde (MDA), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) as primary outcomes, following different therapeutic interventions with traditional Chinese exercises in middle-aged and older adults over 30 years old. Standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to assess the correlation between each group of interventions, and surface under the cumulative ranking (SUCRA) was used to rank the best interventions. RESULTS: The meta-analysis comprised 15 trials with a total of 927 participants and six interventions: (Wuqinxi (WQX), Baduanjin (BDJ), Tai Ji Quan (TJQ), Yijinjing (YJJ), Mawangdui Daoyin (MWD), and no exercise intervention (NEI)). Regarding GPX: WQX [SMD = 2.79 (1.75, 3.83)], TJQ [SMD = 0.47 (0.23, 0.70)], YJJ [SMD = 1.78 (1.18, 2.37)], MWD [SMD = 1.89 (1.36, 2.43)] were superior in increasing GPX relative to NEI. Regarding MDA: WQX [SMD = 1.68 (0.94, 2.42)], YJJ [SMD = 0.99 (0.28, 1.69)] were superior in reducing MDA relative to NEI. Regarding SOD: WQX [SMD = 1.05 (0.10, 2.01)] were superior in increasing SOD relative to NEI. WQX topped the SUCRA with GPX: 0.97, MDA: 0.91, and SOD: 0.94. Furthermore, WQX was more effective than TJQ in interfering with GPX [SMD = 2.32 (1.26, 3.39)] and MDA [SMD = 1.47 (0.26, 2.67)], and a significantly better intervention effect on SOD than YJJ [SMD = 1.52 (0.80, 2.24)] and MWD [SMD = 0.89 (0.03, 1.75)]. CONCLUSION: Traditional Chinese exercise can help middle-aged and older adults reduce oxidative stress. WQX may be the best traditional Chinese exercise of the exercises evaluated for reducing oxidative stress in middle-aged and older adults.

As a new variant of COVID-19 with varied mutations, Omicron is more transmissible, more rapidly contagious, and has a greater risk of reinfection. Given those facts, a precise manage strategy needs to be formulated and implemented in designated megacities. Here, the precise COVID-19 prevention and control strategy for a designated hospital in Shenzhen, China is summarized, including implementation of a two-wing "On duty/On standby" approach based on busy and calm periods, an identification, classification, and grading system for the occupational exposure risks of medical staff, classification of patient transmission risks, separate admission, and an innovative treatment (nasal irrigation). The strategy has enabled the efficient and orderly integration of resources, it has resulted in zero infections among medical staff even during the peak hours of the pandemic at the hospital (1,930 patients admitted to both wings in a single day), and it has significantly reduced the initial period of no virus detection when patients infected with Omicron received saline nasal irrigation (P < 0.001). This strategy has provided evidence of precise prevention and control in a hospital, infection control, and efficient patient treatment in an era when Omicron is widespread.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Baidu Jieduan Granules (BDJDG) to treat common type coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: This multicenter, retrospective, and observational clinical trial included 230 common COVID-19 patients in Leishenshan, Huangshi, and Laohekou Hospitals in Wuhan from January 21 to March 26, 2020. The included patients were further divided into two subgroups according to the use of supplemental oxygen, mild and moderate groups. During the first 14 d of hospitalization, all patients were administered BDJDG combined with conventional Western medicine, and observed for continuous 28 d. Primary outcomes were disease progression rate and discharge rate. Secondary outcomes included negative conversion time of nucleic acid, hospitalization duration, clinical symptom subsidence time, and symptom regression rate. RESULTS: A total of 230 common COVID-19 patients were analyzed (138 in moderate group and 92 in mild group). By day 28, the disease progression rate was 4.3% and the discharge rate was 95.7%. All mild cases recovered and were discharged from hospital. The median negative conversion time of nucleic acid of all 230 COVID-19 patients was 12 d [inter-quartile range (IQR) 3.5-17], the median hospitalization duration was 15 d (IQR 12-20). The median time to fever, cough, and fatigue recovery was 4 d (IQR 2-6), 8 d (IQR 5-12), and 8 d (IQR 5-11). The recovery rate of fever, cough, and fatigue was 94.6%, 90.5%, and 93.5%. The median time to clinical improvement was 12 d (IQR 10-17). Compared with the baseline, total leukocyte counts, neutrophil counts, lymphocyte counts, and platelet counts were increased significantly on days 7 and 14 (P<0.01). C-reactive protein markedly increased on day 3 and significantly decreased on days 7 and 14 (P<0.01). No serious adverse events occurred during treatment. CONCLUSION: BDJDG may be effective and safe for treatment of common type COVID-19. (Registration No. ChiCTR2000030836).
