RESUMEN

Clinical features of masticator-space abscess (MSA) are very similar to those of parotitis or temporomandibular disorder (TMD), making early differential diagnosis difficult. Local causes of MSA include nerve block anesthesia, infection after tooth extraction, and trauma to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ); the systemic cause is immunodeficiency. Odontogenic causes account for most etiologies, but there are also unusual causes of MSA. A 66-year-old male patient visited the emergency room (ER) presenting with left-side TMJ pain three days after receiving an acupressure massage. He was tentatively diagnosed with conventional post-trauma TMD and discharged with medication. However, the patient returned to the ER with increased pain. At this time, his TMD diagnosis was confirmed. He made a third visit to the ER during which facial computed tomographic (CT) images were taken. CT readings identified an abscess or hematoma in the left masticator space. After hospitalizing the patient, needle aspiration confirmed pus in the infratemporal and temporal fossa. Antibiotics were administered, and the abscess was drained through an incision made by the attending physician. The patient's symptoms decreased, and he was discharged.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Osteopontin (OPN) is one of important molecular targets in cancer progression, metastasis as a calcium-binding, extracellular-matrix-associated protein of the small integrin-binding ligand and, N-linked glycoprotein. In the present study, anti-metastatic mechanism of ethanol extracts of Ocimum sanctum (EEOS) was elucidated on OPN enhanced metastasis in NCI-H460 non- small cell lung cancer cells. METHODS: Cell viability was measured by MTT assay. Adhesion and invasion assays were carried out to see that EEOS inhibited cell adhesion and invasion in OPN treated and non-treated NCI-H 460 cells. RT-PCR was used to determine the mRNA levels of uPA, uPAR, and EGFR. RESULTS: EEOS significantly inhibited cell adhesion and invasion in OPN treated and non treated NCI-H460 cells, though EEOS did not show any toxicity up to 200 µg/ml. EEOS effectively attenuated the expression of OPN and CD44 and also OPN activated the expression of CD44 in NCI-H460 cells. In addition, EEOS effectively suppressed the expression of phosphatidylinositide 3-kinases (PI3K) and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) and the phosphorylation of Akt at protein level in OPN treated NCI-H460 cells. Also, EEOS significantly attenuated the expression of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), its receptor (uPAR) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) at mRNA level and reduced vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) production and MMP-9 activity in OPN treated NCI-H460 cells. Furthermore, PI3K/Akt inhibitor LY294002 enhanced anti-metastatic potential of EEOS to attenuate the expression of uPA and MMP-9 in OPN treated NCI-H 460 cells. CONCLUSION: Overall, our findings suggest that anti-metastatic mechanism of EEOS is mediated by inhibition of PI3K/Akt in OPN treated NCI-H460 non-small cell lung cancer cells.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the yoga during pregnancy on the maternal weight, delivery experience and infant birth weight. METHOD: The nonequivalent control group pre test-post test design was used. The participants were the healthy pregnant women, whose pre-pregnancy BMI was normal, gestational period was more than 20 weeks. The final sample consisted of 21 mother-infant dyads for experimental group and 20 dyads for control group and who agreed to participate in this study. Data were collected from February 1st to December 15th, 2006. The Qi exercise prenatal program was carried out for 90 minutes a day, 2 times a week for 12 weeks. The data were analyzed using SPSS 16.0 Program. RESULT: The degree of maternal weight gain(p<.001), labor pain(p<.001), discomfort after delivery(p<.001) and infant's birth weight(p<.001) were significantly different between two groups. CONCLUSION: The yoga during pregnancy managed weight gain of mothers. Therefore, this study suggests that yoga during pregnancy to promotes stabilization can be beneficial for maintaining healthy weight, decreasing labor pain and discomfort after delivery for pregnant women and increasing infant's birth weight.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress is important in both diabetic complications and the development and the progression of type 2 diabetes via the effects on the pancreatic beta-cells. EGCG (epigallocatechin galleate), a major constituent of green tea, has been known to have beneficial effects on various diseases through the mechanisms of antioxidant and cell signaling modulation. But, very small numbers of studies were published about the direct effects of EGCG on the pancreatic beta cell lines. We performed this study to see the protective effect of EGCG on pancreatic beta cell line under H2O2 and the mechanisms of this phenomenon. METHODS: We used INS-1 cells and hydrogen peroxide as an oxidative stressor. Their viabilities were verified by MTT assay and FACS. The activity of glutathione peroxidase was assessed by total glutathione quantification kit. Western blot and semi-quantitative RT-PCR for the catalase, SOD (superoxide dismutase), PI3K and Akt were performed. Functional status of INS-1 cells was tested by GSIS (glucose stimulated insulin secretion). RESULTS: The biological effects of EGCG were different according to its concentrations. 10 micrometer EGCG effectively protected hydrogen peroxide induced damage in INS-1 cells. The expression and the activity of SOD, catalase and the glutathione peroxidase were significantly increased by EGCG. EGCG significantly increased PI3K and Akt activity and its effect was inhibited partially by wortmannin. GSIS was well preserved by EGCG. CONCLUSION: EGCG in low concentration effectively protected INS-1 cells from the oxidative stress through the activation of both antioxidant systems and anti-apoptosis signaling. Further studies will be necessary for the more detailed mechanisms and the clinical implications.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Many modern chemistry analyzers are open systems and they can use reagents other than those supplied by the manufacturer of the analyzer. There are many generic reagents for use in open systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the analytical performance of the BD Lab reagents (BD Lab co., Korea) which were generic reagents. METHODS: Sixteen kinds of reagents of total protein, albumin, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, glucose, uric acid, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LD), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT), calcium, inorganic phosphorus, total cholesterol, triglycerides were tested for precision, linearity and correlation according to the NCCLS guidelines (EP5-A, EP6-A, EP9-A2). Toshiba 200-FR Neo (Toshiba Medical Systems Co., Japan) was used in this evaluation. RESULTS: All reagents showed acceptable precision with total coefficients of variation less than 7%. Comparison of BD Lab reagents with the current reagents by regression analysis resulted in slopes ranging from 0.86 to 1.06 and correlation coefficients more than 0.975. Fifteen of sixteen reagents showed good linearity in broad range. CONCLUSIONS: BD Lab reagents showed good precision, linearity, and correlation. Therefore, we conclude that the BD Lab reagents can be an alternative of currently used reagents in chemistry analyzers.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Serum separator tubes were introduced 25 years ago and are widely used in the clinical laboratory for collection of blood. Recently, the plastic serum separator tube has become available for blood collection for lightening and flexibility and suitability for automation. However few studies have been reported on stability of the common analytes in this tube. METHODS: We evaluated the concentrations of seventeencommonly ordered analytes: aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total protein, albumin, sodium, chloride, calcium, phosphorus, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, potassium, uric acid, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), total cholesterol, glucose, creatinine in sera separated in plain glass tubes (no gel) and in sera separated in the plastic Greiner Bio-One Vacuette tubes containing serum separator gel (Greiner Bio-One, Kremsm?nster, Austria) by Toshiba 200-FR Neo. RESULTS: Results were analyzed using two-tailed paired t-tests and Bland-Altman plots. Results from 9 common analytes (glucose, total cholesterol, BUN, potassium, LDL-cholesterol, inorganic phosphorus, calcium, sodium, chloride) were statistically different between glass tube and plastic Greiner Bio-One Vacuette tube, but the differences were not considered to be clinically significant. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the plastic Greiner Bio-One Vacuette tubes are suitable for collection of blood and storage of serum for common analytes.

RESUMEN

In the course of screening of angiogenesis inhibitor from natural products, cryptotanshinone from Salvia miltiorrhiza was isolated as a potent small molecule inhibitor of angiogenesis. Cryptotanshinone inhibits bFGF-induced angiogenesis of BAECs at ten micromolar ranges in vitro without cytotoxicity. Tanshinone IIA, another tanshinone isolated from S. miltiorrhiza, which is structurally very similar to cryptotanshinone except C-15 position of dihydrofuran ring does not inhibit angiogenesis induced by bFGF. These results demonstrate that cryptotanshinone is a new anti-angiogenic agent and double bond at C-15 position of the dihydrofuran ring plays a crucial role in the activity.
