RESUMEN

Non-aerated bacteria-algae system gaining O2 through photosynthesis presents an alternative for costly mechanical aeration. This study investigated oxygen supply and performance of nutrients removal at low and high light intensity (LL and HL). The results showed that P removal was high and robust (LL 97 ± 1.8 %, HL 95 % ± 2.9 %), while NH4+-N removal fluctuated dramatically (LL 66 ± 14.7 %, HL 84 ± 8.6 %). Oxygen generated at illumination of 200 µmol m-2 s-1, 6 h was sufficient to sustain aerobic phase for 2.25 g/L MLSS. However, O2 produced by algae was preferentially captured in the order of heterotrophic bacteria (HB), ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB), nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB). Oxygen affinity coupled with light intensity led to NOB suppression with stable nitrite accumulation ratio of 57 %. Free nitrous acid (FNA) and light stimulated the abundance of denitrifying polyphosphate accumulating organism (DPAO) of Flavobacterium, but with declined P-accumulating metabolism (PAM) of P release, P/C, K/P and Mg/P ratios. Flavobacterium and cyanobacteria Leptolyngbya, along with biologically induced CaP in extracellular polymeric substances was the key to robust P removal. AOB of Ellin6067 and DPAO of Flavobacteria offer a promising scenario for partial nitrification-denitrifying phosphorus removal.

RESUMEN

Background: In intensive care units, mechanical ventilation is an important therapy to help patients with dyspnea. However, long-term ventilator dependence would consume huge medical resources and increase the risk of morbidity and mortality. The aim of the study was to examine the efficacy of the acupuncture combined with western medical care on ventilator parameters in ventilator-dependent patients. Methods: In this clinical trial, 80 ventilator-dependent patients aged 20 to 80 years old were randomly assigned to acupuncture group and control group in the respiratory care center (RCC) of Changhua Christian Hospital. Besides regular medical care and therapy, participants in the acupuncture group received acupuncture therapy at the same 17 acu-points for 20 minutes once a day, a total of 12 sessions. The ventilator parameters were recorded to evaluate the respiratory efficiency for all participants. The primary outcome was rapid shallow breathing index (RSBI), and secondary outcomes were respiratory rate (RR), tidal volume (TV) and ventilation per minute (MV). Results: Though there was no significant difference in the parameter between the acupuncture group and the control group, we found the trend of decreasing RSBI in the acupuncture group. In subgroup analyses, the mean of RSBI significantly decreased 16.02 (with the SD in 60.84) in acupuncture group, while it increased 17.84 (with the SD in 39.38) in control group (p=0.036) after 12 sessions. Conclusion: Acupuncture treatment can improve breathing ability of patients with respirator dependence in respiratory care center.

RESUMEN

The pericarps of Trichosanthes kirilowii are often used to treat cough in traditional Chinese medicine, and its ethanol extract exhibited effective therapeutic effects on acute lung injury (ALI) in vivo caused by H1N1. An anticomplement activity-guided fractionation on the extract resulted in the isolation of ten new terpenoids, including seven monoterpenoids, trichosanates A-G (1-7), and three cucurbitane-type triterpenoids, cucurbitacins W-Y (8-10), as well as eleven known terpenoids (11-21). The new terpenoids' structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis, X-ray crystallographic analysis (1), electronic circular dichroism (ECD) analysis and calculations (2-10). Twelve monoterpenoids (1-7 and 11-15) and five cucurbitane-type triterpenoids (8-10, 18, and 20) exhibited anticomplement activity in vitro. For the monoterpenoids, the long aliphatic chain substituents might enhance their anticomplement activity. Additionally, two representative anticomplement terpenoids, 8 and 11, obviously attenuated H1N1-induced ALI in vivo by inhibiting complement overactivation and reducing inflammatory responses.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Patients with N2-3 nasopharyngeal carcinoma have a high risk of treatment being unsuccessful despite the current practice of using a concurrent adjuvant cisplatin-fluorouracil regimen. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of concurrent adjuvant cisplatin-gemcitabine with cisplatin-fluorouracil in N2-3 nasopharyngeal carcinoma. METHODS: We conducted an open-label, randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial at four cancer centres in China. Eligible patients were aged 18-65 years with untreated, non-keratinising, stage T1-4 N2-3 M0 nasopharyngeal carcinoma, an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status score of 0-1, and adequate bone marrow, liver, and renal function. Eligible patients were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive concurrent cisplatin (100 mg/m2 intravenously) on days 1, 22, and 43 of intensity-modulated radiotherapy followed by either gemcitabine (1 g/m2 intravenously on days 1 and 8) and cisplatin (80 mg/m2 intravenously for 4 h on day 1) once every 3 weeks or fluorouracil (4 g/m2 in continuous intravenous infusion for 96 h) and cisplatin (80 mg/m2 intravenously for 4 h on day 1) once every 4 weeks, for three cycles. Randomisation was done using a computer-generated random number code with a block size of six, stratified by treatment centre and nodal category. The primary endpoint was 3-year progression-free survival in the intention-to-treat population (ie, all patients randomly assigned to treatment). Safety was assessed in all participants who received at least one dose of chemoradiotherapy. This study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03321539, and patients are currently under follow-up. FINDINGS: From Oct 30, 2017, to July 9, 2020, 240 patients (median age 44 years [IQR 36-52]; 175 [73%] male and 65 [27%] female) were randomly assigned to the cisplatin-fluorouracil group (n=120) or cisplatin-gemcitabine group (n=120). As of data cutoff (Dec 25, 2022), median follow-up was 40 months (IQR 32-48). 3-year progression-free survival was 83·9% (95% CI 75·9-89·4; 19 disease progressions and 11 deaths) in the cisplatin-gemcitabine group and 71·5% (62·5-78·7; 34 disease progressions and seven deaths) in the cisplatin-fluorouracil group (stratified hazard ratio 0·54 [95% CI 0·32-0·93]; log rank p=0·023). The most common grade 3 or worse adverse events that occurred during treatment were leukopenia (61 [52%] of 117 in the cisplatin-gemcitabine group vs 34 [29%] of 116 in the cisplatin-fluorouracil group; p=0·00039), neutropenia (37 [32%] vs 19 [16%]; p=0·010), and mucositis (27 [23%] vs 32 [28%]; p=0·43). The most common grade 3 or worse late adverse event (occurring from 3 months after completion of radiotherapy) was auditory or hearing loss (six [5%] vs ten [9%]). One (1%) patient in the cisplatin-gemcitabine group died due to treatment-related complications (septic shock caused by neutropenic infection). No patients in the cisplatin-fluorouracil group had treatment-related deaths. INTERPRETATION: Our findings suggest that concurrent adjuvant cisplatin-gemcitabine could be used as an adjuvant therapy in the treatment of patients with N2-3 nasopharyngeal carcinoma, although long-term follow-up is required to confirm the optimal therapeutic ratio. RESUMEN

This work reported the development, performance and microbial community of microalgal-bacterial biofilms cultivated in a continuous-flow photoreactor for municipal wastewater treatment under various conditions. Results showed that microalgal-bacterial biofilms were successfully developed at a HRT of 9 h without external aeration, with a biofilm concentration of around 4690 mg/L being achieved in the steady-state. It was found that further increase of HRT to 12 h did not improve the overall accumulation of biofilm, whereas the growth of microalgae in biofilms was faster than bacteria in the initial stage, indicated by an increased chlorophyll-a&b content in biofilms. After which, the chlorophyll-a&b content in biofilms gradually stabilized at the level comparable with the seed, suggesting that there was a balanced distribution of microalgae and bacteria in biofilms. About 90% of TOC, 71.4% of total nitrogen and 72.6% of phosphorus were removed by microalgal-bacterial biofilms mainly through assimilation in the steady-state photoreactor run at the HRT of 12 h with external aeration. The community analysis further revealed that Cyanobacteria and Chloroflexi were the main components, while Chlorophyta appeared to be the dominant eukaryotic algal community in biofilms. This study could offer new insights into the development of microalgal-bacterial biofilms in a continuous-flow photoreactor for sustainable low-carbon municipal wastewater treatment.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To report the efficacy and safety of postoperative adjuvant hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) with 5-fluorouracil and oxaliplatin (FOLFOX) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with microvascular invasion (MVI). PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this randomized, open-label, multicenter trial, histologically confirmed HCC patients with MVI were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive adjuvant FOLFOX-HAIC (treatment group) or routine follow-up (control group). The primary end point was disease-free survival (DFS) by intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis while secondary end points were overall survival, recurrence rate, and safety. RESULTS: Between June 2016 and August 2021, a total of 315 patients (ITT population) at five centers were randomly assigned to the treatment group (n = 157) or the control group (n = 158). In the ITT population, the median DFS was 20.3 months (95% CI, 10.4 to 30.3) in the treatment group versus 10.0 months (95% CI, 6.8 to 13.2) in the control group (hazard ratio, 0.59; 95% CI, 0.43 to 0.81; P = .001). The overall survival rates at 1 year, 2 years, and 3 years were 93.8% (95% CI, 89.8 to 98.1), 86.4% (95% CI, 80.0 to 93.2), and 80.4% (95% CI, 71.9 to 89.9) for the treatment group and 92.0% (95% CI, 87.6 to 96.7), 86.0% (95% CI, 79.9 to 92.6), and 74.9% (95% CI, 65.5 to 85.7) for the control group (hazard ratio, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.36 to 1.14; P = .130), respectively. The recurrence rates were 40.1% (63/157) in the treatment group and 55.7% (88/158) in the control group. Majority of the adverse events were grade 0-1 (83.8%), with no treatment-related death in both groups. CONCLUSION: Postoperative adjuvant HAIC with FOLFOX significantly improved the DFS benefits with acceptable toxicities in HCC patients with MVI.

RESUMEN

As an emerging green wastewater treatment technology, the microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) process has attracted increasing interest under the current situation of global climate change. However, little information is available for its performance in treating municipal wastewater under outdoor conditions. Thus, this study evaluated the behaviors of MBGS for treating simulated and real municipal wastewater under natural diel conditions. The results showed that a significant accumulation of oxygen bubbles during daily operation led to the auto-floating of the conventional settable MBGS. The removal of organics was relatively stable during day-night cycles, while the removals of total nitrogen and total phosphorus were dependent on the saturated oxygen concentration over 10 mg/L in MBGS system. Furthermore, oxygen bubbles generated by photosynthesis of microalgae (Scenedesmaceae and Cyanobacteria) due to microalgae phototaxis were found to be attached onto the surface of granules, causing the auto-flotation of MBGS. The formation process of the auto-floating oxygenic MBGS was clarified and further analysis suggested that the non-aerated settable MBGS would be able to auto-float at an average outdoor light intensity of 140 µ mol/m2/s. Overall, the auto-floating oxygenic MBGS process was demonstrated to be feasible for real municipal wastewater treatment, even under rainy and cloudy days, advancing the knowledge and adding theoretical basis for its further applications.

RESUMEN

Six novel Maillard reaction products (MRPs) (1-6) were isolated from the processed Thermopsis lanceolata R. Br. seed extract, along with one biogenetically related intermediate (7). Compounds 1-4 possessed three rare dimerization patterns constructed by cytisine, whereas compounds 5 and 6 represented the first example of the addition products of cytisine and 5,6-dihydroxy-4-hexanolide. Their structures were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic data analysis and quantum chemistry calculations including GIAO 13C{1H} NMR and ECD calculation, combined with single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Biologically, compound 3 displayed significant anti-tobacco mosaic virus activity compared with the positive control ningnanmycin.

RESUMEN

Microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) process has a gorgeous prospect for municipal wastewater treatment, but the research on the treatment of complex organic wastewater by MBGS process with CO2 addition under outdoor conditions is not enough. Therefore, this paper evaluated the feasibility of CO2-added MBGS process for complex organic wastewater disposal under natural day-night cycles. The results showed that the addition of CO2 overall improved the removal efficiency of pollutants. Typically, the removal efficiency of total phosphorus increased averagely from 88.5 % to 95.0 % in 12-h day cycle and from 26.2 % to 45.3 % in 12-h night cycle. The addition of CO2 increased the size of MBGS from 1.0 mm to 16.5 mm within 30 days due to extracellular polymeric substances secretion and the dominant filamentous microalgae on granules. The decrease of catalase activity and malondialdehyde content indicated that CO2 reduced oxidative damage and maintained the normal growth of MBGS. Further estimates of the collected gas showed that CO2-added MBGS process could reduce global CO2 emissions by one hundred million tons per year. This study is expected to contribute to the goal of carbon neutrality in the area of wastewater treatment by MBGS process.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This network meta-analysis aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of intravenous (IV) hydralazine, oral nifedipine, and IV labetalol with different dosage regimens in the treatment of severe hypertension during pregnancy. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed on PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) exploring the effects of hydralazine, nifedipine, and labetalol in the treatment of severe hypertension during pregnancy. RESULTS: A total of 21 RCTs with 2183 patients comparing 7 regimens (oral nifedipine 50,60,90 mg; hydralazine 15,25 mg; and labetalol 220,300 mg) were identified. Compared with IV labetalol 300 mg, nifedipine 50,60, and 90 mg significantly improved the successful treatment rate of severe hypertension during pregnancy, nifedipine 50 and 90 mg and IV hydralazine 25 mg required significantly fewer doses to achieve target blood pressure (BP), and nifedipine 50 mg took significantly shorter time to achieve target BP. Subgroup analysis showed that only nifedipine 50 mg tablets, not capsules, required a significantly shorter time and fewer doses to achieve target BP than IV labetalol 300 mg. Moreover, nifedipine 60,90 mg showed superior effectiveness than IV hydralazine 15,25 mg in the successful treatment rate of severe hypertension during pregnancy. SUCRA analysis suggested that nifedipine 50,60,90 mg as the better regimens with the lower rates of overall ADR and neonatal complications. CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrated the superiority of oral nifedipine 50,60,90 mg, especially oral nifedipine 50 mg tablets, in the treatment of severe hypertension during pregnancy than IV labetalol 300 mg, while oral nifedipine 60,90 mg also showed superiority in the successful treatment rate of severe hypertension during pregnancy than IV hydralazine 15,25 mg. However, the limitations of the underlying data indicate that future large-scale and rigorous RCTs are needed to confirm such findings.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) is an important treatment option for patients with ovarian cancer. Although intravenous NACT can improve optimal resection rates and decrease surgical morbidity and mortality, these advantages do not translate into a survival benefit. Ovarian carcinoma is mainly confined to the peritoneal cavity, which makes it a potential target for hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Our previous study showed that HIPEC could be used in the neoadjuvant setting, which was named neoadjuvant HIPEC (NHIPEC). Since hyperthermia is an excellent chemosensitiser, we hypothesised that the combination of NHIPEC and intravenous NACT could show superior efficacy to intravenous NACT alone. METHODS: This study is a single-centre, open-label, randomised (1:1 allocation ratio) phase 2 trial. A total of 80 patients will be randomly assigned into an experimental group (NHIPEC+intravenous NACT) or a control group (intravenous NACT). Patients in the experimental group will receive NHIPEC following laparoscopic evaluation, and four tubes will be placed via the laparoscopic ports, which will be used to administer NHIPEC. Then, perfusion with docetaxel (60-75 mg/m2) will be performed (43°C for 60 min, Day 0) followed by cisplatin (75 mg/m2, Day 1) infusion (43°C for 60 min) 24 hours later. After NHIPEC, two cycles of intravenous NACT will be given. Patients in the control group will receive three cycles of intravenous NACT. The primary endpoint is the proportion of patients who achieve a Chemotherapy Response Score (CRS) of 3 according to the CRS system. The secondary endpoints include progression-free survival, overall survival and the rates of complete resection and NHIPEC-related adverse events. ETHICS APPROVAL AND DISSEMINATION: This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital (approval number: 2020-ky-050). Results will be submitted to peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ChiCTR2000038173.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of gecko polysaccharide on the cyclophosphamide-induced suppressed immune response in mice. METHODS: Polysaccharides were extracted from fresh gecko for the first time using an orthogonal method and protein was removed using Sevag reagent (chloroform:N-butanol, 5:1, v/v). The gecko polysaccharide (GPCE) content was determined by the phenol-concentrated sulfuric acid method. An immunocompromised mouse model was established by intraperitoneally injecting cyclophosphamide at 100 mg/kg into 48 mice. The effects of GPCE on immune regulation in mice were assessed by a thymus-spleen index, serum hemolysin levels, and the proliferation of splenic lymphocytes. Spleen cell CD4+, CD8+, and the CD4+/CD8+ ratio were evaluated by flow cytometry and the tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels were measured by ELISA. RESULTS: The optimal extraction process for gecko polysaccharide included a 1:20 ratio of material to liquid (v/v), an extraction temperature of 60 ℃ and a time of 2 h. The polysaccharide content of the extract was 65.74%. GPCE was analyzed by HPLC and primarily contained glucose and small amounts of mannose, rha, and gal. Compared with the model, the thymus index, the spleen index were indices for GPCE increased with dose, whereas the high and medium groups exhibited significant differences (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). Higher doses of GPCE increased serum TNF-α levels and there was a significant difference between the medium and high GPCE doses and the model (P < 0.05, P < 0.01); The number of CD4+ cells and the CD4+/CD8+ ratio in the gecko polysaccharide group were increased (P < 0.05) and there was no statistical difference in the number of CD8+ cells in the gecko polysaccharide group (P > 0.05); The high GPCE dose significantly increased the level of serum hemolysin (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Gecko polysaccharide significantly improved the suppressed immune response induced by cyclophosphamide in mice and promoted the secretion of tumor necrosis factor. The mechanism of gecko polysaccharide as an antitumor agent warrants further study.

RESUMEN

Urban freshwater lakes play an indispensable role in maintaining the urban environment and are suffering great threats of eutrophication. Until now, little has been known about the seasonal bacterial communities of the surface water of adjacent freshwater urban lakes. This study reported the bacterial communities of three adjacent freshwater lakes (i.e., Tangxun Lake, Yezhi Lake and Nan Lake) during the alternation of seasons. Nan Lake had the best water quality among the three lakes as reflected by the bacterial eutrophic index (BEI), bacterial indicator (Luteolibacter) and functional prediction analysis. It was found that Alphaproteobacteria had the lowest abundance in summer and the highest abundance in winter. Bacteroidetes had the lowest abundance in winter, while Planctomycetes had the highest abundance in summer. N/P ratio appeared to have some relationships with eutrophication. Tangxun Lake and Nan Lake with higher average N/P ratios (e.g., N/P = 20) tended to have a higher BEI in summer at a water temperature of 27 °C, while Yezhi Lake with a relatively lower average N/P ratio (e.g., N/P = 14) tended to have a higher BEI in spring and autumn at a water temperature of 9-20 °C. BEI and water temperature were identified as the key parameters in determining the bacterial communities of lake water. Phosphorus seemed to have slightly more impact on the bacterial communities than nitrogen. It is expected that this study will help to gain more knowledge on urban lake eutrophication.

RESUMEN

Microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) process has become a focal point in treating municipal wastewater. However, it remains elusive whether the emerging process can be applied for the treatment of aquaculture wastewater, which contains considerable concentrations of nitrate and nitrite. This study evaluated the feasibility of MBGS process for aquaculture wastewater treatment. Result showed that the MBGS process was competent to remove respective 64.8%, 84.9%, 70.8%, 50.0% and 84.2% of chemical oxygen demand, ammonia-nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen, nitrite-nitrogen and phosphate-phosphorus under non-aerated conditions within 8 h. The dominant microalgae and bacteria were identified to be Coelastrella and Rhodobacteraceae, respectively. Further metagenomics analysis implied that microbial assimilation was the main contributor in organics, nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Specifically, considerable nitrate and nitrite removals were also obtained with the synergy between microalgae and bacteria. Consequently, this work demonstrated that the MBGS process showed a prospect of becoming an environmentally friendly and efficient alternative in aquaculture wastewater treatment.

RESUMEN

This paper investigated the performance of non-aerated microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) process in municipal wastewater treatment at different temperatures. Results showed that the 70.5%, 81.9% and 86.1% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) could be removed at 15, 22 and 30 °C, respectively, indicating that a high temperature favored removal of organics due to promoted biomass growth. It was found that most of ammonia-N was removed via microbial assimilation by microalgae and bacteria in granules, with bacterial assimilation being dominant at the lower temperature. The phosphorus removal efficiency of 90.1% was achieved at 22 °C, with the presence of abundant Leptolyngbyales, a potential phosphorus accumulating alga. Chlorophyta grew much faster than Leptolyngbyales at 30 °C in microalgal-bacterial granules. It can be concluded that the contributions of microalgal and bacterial assimilations toward COD, ammonia and P removal appeared to be temperature-dependent, i.e. temperature could alter the symbiotic relationship between microalgae and bacteria. This study would contribute to the application of non-aerated MBGS process in municipal wastewater treatment with seasonal variation of temperature.

RESUMEN

The aerobic granular sludge (AGS) process and microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) process were comparably applied for municipal wastewater treatment in sequencing batch reactors with a height to diameter ratio of eight. For morphological appearances, the yellow aerobic granules were strip-shaped (4.0 mm × 0.62 mm) while the green microalgal-bacterial granules were elliptical-shaped (2.0 mm × 0.75 mm). The dominated rod-shaped bacteria (e.g., Acidobacteria and Bacteroidetes) and the slender configuration might be associated with the strip shape of aerobic granules under weak acid conditions. The nutrients removal performances by MBGS process were generally slightly better than AGS process. In addition, nutrients removal mechanisms were identified to elucidate how organics, ammonia, and phosphorus were removed by AGS process and MBGS process, respectively. Mass balance calculation estimated that MBGS process appeared to achieve much less CO2 emission (5.8%) compared with AGS process (44.4%). Overall, it proved that MBGS process, with the merits of potentially low energy cost, limited CO2 emission, and excellent performance, showed more prospects in municipal wastewater treatment than AGS process.

RESUMEN

Globally increasing concerns have been raised on the high energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in conventional municipal wastewater treatment processes over the past decades. In this study, a self-sustaining synergetic microalgal-bacterial granular sludge process was thus developed to address these challenges. The results showed that the microalgal-bacterial granular sludge process was capable of removing 92.69%, 96.84% and 87.16% of influent organics, ammonia and phosphorus under non-aeration conditions over a short time of 6 h. The effluent could meet the increasingly stringent discharge standards in many countries worldwide. A tight synergetic interrelationship effect between microalgae and bacteria in granules was essential for such excellent process performance. The stoichiometric and functional genes analyses further revealed that most of organic matter and nutrients were removed through microalgal and bacterial assimilations. Moreover, it was found that there existed a desirable distribution of functional species of microalgae and bacteria in microalgal-bacterial granules, which appeared to be essential for the self-sustaining synergetic reactions and stability of microalgal-bacterial granules. Consequently, this work may offer a promising engineering alternative with great potential to achieve energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable municipal wastewater treatment.

RESUMEN

Microalgal-bacterial granular sludge processes are attracting increasing research interest in fields of biological municipal wastewater treatment. However, these processes currently suffer from inefficient phosphorus removal and long hydraulic reaction time. As such, a self-sustaining synergetic microalgal-bacterial granular sludge process was explored for improving phosphorus removal. Results showed that about 86% of influent phosphorus could be removed within 6 h comprising 2-hr dark phase and 4-hr light phase. Slight phosphorus release was observed in dark phase, followed by a significant phosphorus uptake in light phase together with the accumulation of poly-phosphorus in microalgal cells. The analyses by PacBio's sequencing and fluorescence in situ hybridization revealed that microalgal genus of Pantanalinema were the major phosphorus-accumulating organisms. Based on these experimental observations, the removal mechanisms of phosphorus by microalgal-bacterial granular sludge process were identified. It is expected that this study may shed lights on the pathways of biological phosphorus removal in microalgal-bacterial granular sludge process.

RESUMEN

The aim of the study was to systematically characterize the interference of biotin on thyroid function tests and biotin washout periods.Ten healthy adults were recruited with administration of 5 and 10 mg/d biotin for 7 days. Analyte concentrations of thyroid function tests were measured at baseline prior to starting biotin and from 2 hours to 2 days after withdrawal of 5 and 10 mg/d biotin. The outcomes were compared the baseline with the several points after taking biotin at Roche cobas e602, Beckman UniCel DxI 800, and Abbott Architect 2000 immunoassay platforms, respectively.Ingesting 5 or 10 mg/d of biotin for 7 days could produce positive or negative interference among the thyroid function tests at Roche cobas e602 and Beckman UniCel DxI 800 systems, but no interference on Abbott Architect 2000. Interference duration of 5 mg/d biotin for Roche cobas e602 and Beckman UniCel DxI 800 of thyroid function tests lasted for 8 hours, while 10 mg/d biotin interfered with Roche cobas e602 or Beckman UniCel DxI 800 for 1 day or 2 days. This study provides valuable guidance on biotin washout periods at doses common in over-the-counter supplements necessary to avoid false assay results.Trial registration: ChiCTR1800020472.
