RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and mechanism of action of 2 feed additives in reducing the impacts of virus and temperature stressors. We determined the effects of protected biofactors and antioxidants (P(BF+AOx)), and protected biofactors and antioxidants with protected organic acids and essential oils (P(BF+AOx)+P(OA+EO)) on the immune and metabolic health of Ross 308 broiler chickens. These biofactors and antioxidants were derived from vitamins, and Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae and Bacillus subtilis fermentation extracts. All Ross 308 chickens were exposed to a double-dose of live bronchitis vaccine at d 0 and environmentally challenged by reducing the temperature from 32°C to 20°C at d 3 for 48 h. Control birds were fed without feed additives in the diet. Performance data and jejunum samples were collected to evaluate the effects of these treatments on growth, cytokine expression, and protein phosphorylation via kinome peptide array. ANOVA was used for statistical analysis of the performance and gene expression data (p-value of 0.05), and PIIKA2 was used for statistical evaluation and comparison of the kinome peptide array data. The P(BF plus;AOx) and P(BF+AOx)+P(OA+EO) treatments significantly increased bird weight gain and decreased feed conversion. The kinome peptide array data analysis showed increased activity of cytoskeletal, cell growth and proliferation proteins, and metabolic signaling in the jejunum of P(BF+AOx)+P(OA+EO) treated chickens. There was a significant decrease in IL-6 gene expression in the jejunum of P(BF+AOx)+P(OA+EO) samples compared to control at d 15. P(BF+AOx)+P(OA+EO) treatments in the jejunum showed strong immunomodulatory effects, perhaps to control inflammation. P(BF+AOx)+P(OA+EO) improves gut health via growth and metabolic signaling in the jejunum while inducing stronger immunomodulation.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of ultrasound (US)-guided dry needling (DN) with traditional DN in the treatment of pain and dysfunction for patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). DESIGN: A double-blind, randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Patients (25 male and 65 female), age 50-80 years diagnosed with KOA were recruited and randomly assigned to one of three groups in a 1:1:1 ratio for intervention: real US-guided DN with exercise therapy (G1), placebo US-guided DN with exercise therapy (G2), and exercise therapy solely (G3). G1 and G2 were blinded to the application of real or placebo US guidance by turning the monitor of US imaging out-of-view from participants' vantage points. The effectiveness of blinding was evaluated by asking the participants whether they had received real-US guided DN. The responses were assessed by Chi-square test. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Knee injury, and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) subscales (KOOS-pain, KOOS-symptoms, KOOS-quality-of-life (QoL)) were collected at baseline, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks by a blinded assessor. Data were analyzed by mixed model analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Bonferroni correction. RESULTS: Eighty-four participants (61.26±5.57 years) completed the study. G1 achieved significant improvement in VAS at 8 weeks compared to G2 and G3 (G1 vs. G2: MD = -15.61, 95% CI [-25.49, -5.51], p = 0.001; G1 vs. G3: MD = -19.90, 95% CI [-29.71, -10.08], p< 0.001). G1 achieved significant improvement in KOOS-pain at 8 weeks compared to G2 and G3 (G1 vs. G2: MD = 9.76, 95% CI [2.38, 17.14], p = 0.006; G1 vs. G3: MD = 9.48, 95% CI [2.31, 16.66], p = 0.010). KOOS-symptoms and KOOS-QoL were not statistically significant between groups. G2 had no significant difference of the perceptions as G1 with p = 0.128. G2 were successfully blinded to placebo US-guided DN. CONCLUSION: US-guided DN with exercise therapy may be more effective than traditional DN with exercise therapy or exercise therapy alone in reduce pain of KOA.

Our objective was to identify practical indicators of calf dehydration that could be used in an industry context. Eleven healthy 4-d-old commercial dairy calves were fed 2 L of mixed colostrum, then deprived of food and water for 24 h. Total body water was determined in the fed state using the deuterium dilution method. Body weight, along with a range of behavioral and physiological variables, was recorded 1 h after feeding, then at 90-min intervals through to 24 h. Blood samples were collected at every second sampling to assess changes in plasma hemoglobin, hematocrit, and osmolality. Linear mixed-effects models were used to explore associations between hydration status (% body water) and outcome variables. All calves remained bright and alert with good suckling reflexes throughout the 24-h period. After 24 h, total body water had decreased by an average of 8.4% (standard error 1.18), consistent with mild to moderate dehydration. Skin tent return time, capillary refill time, and detectable enophthalmos were associated with hydration status. Calves with skin tent return times of 3 s or longer were 4.4 percentage points less hydrated than those with return times of less than 3 s. Similarly, a capillary refill time of 3 s or longer was associated with a 4.3 percentage point reduction in hydration compared with refill times of less than 3 s. Calves with detectable enophthalmos (≥1 mm) were 3.5 percentage points less hydrated than those without enophthalmos. The skin tent, capillary refill, and enophthalmos tests are all relatively simple to perform and, although requiring the calf to be briefly restrained, can easily be performed by a single operator. The outcome of these tests was relatively consistent, in that calves above the threshold in any test were 3.5 to 4.5% less hydrated than calves below the threshold. As such, these tests may be of practical utility to identify calves with mild to moderate dehydration in an industry setting.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial lung disease-associated antisynthetase syndrome (AS-ILD) carries significant morbidity and mortality. Corticosteroids and immunosuppressive drugs are the mainstay of treatment. Human immunoglobulin (IVIg), an immunomodulator without immunosuppressive properties, is effective in myositis but the evidence supporting its use in ILD is scarce. OBJECTIVE: To describe clinical outcomes of AS-ILD patients receiving IVIg. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of AS-ILD patients. Linear mixed models using restricted maximum likelihood estimation was used to estimate the change in lung function and corticosteroid dose over time. RESULTS: Data from 17 patients was analyzed. Median follow-up was 24.6 months. Fourteen patients had refractory disease. The mean percent-predicted forced vital capacity (FVC%) (p = 0.048) and percent-predicted diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO%) (p = 0.0223) increased over time, while the mean prednisone dose (p < 0.001) decreased over time. Seven patients achieved a >10% increase in FVC%, including two who used IVIg as initial treatment. Five patients showed a >10% increase in DLCO% and TLC%. Nine (53%) patients experienced side effects. CONCLUSIONS: IVIg may be a useful complementary therapy in active progressive AS-ILD but is associated with potential side effects. Fssssurther investigation is required to determine the value of IVIg as an initial treatment in AS-ILD.

OBJECTIVES: Many Veterans suffer from substance use disorders (SUDs). Treatment challenges include poor treatment engagement and high relapse rates. Complementary interventions have the potential to enhance both. This study was a preliminary evaluation of sailing adventure therapy (SAT) for this population. DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. Participants in the intervention were 22 Veterans (20 male, 2 female) aged 22-65 who entered a Veterans Administration residential SUD treatment program. All subjects had two or more SUDs, and many had psychiatric (95%) and/or medical (77%) comorbidities. The age, gender and diagnosis-matched control group (n = 22) received residential SUD treatment as usual (TAU) in the same program but without SAT. SETTING: Residential SUD treatment program at a Veterans Administration Medical Center. INTERVENTION: Sailing adventure therapy. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), State Trait Anxiety Inventory six-item short form (STAI: Y-6 item), Acceptance and Action Questionnaire II (AAQ II), Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) and a locally developed patient survey. Outcome comparison among SAT plus TAU group versus TAU - only group included measures of successful completion of residential SUD treatment program as well as psychiatric hospitalizations and/or residential SUD treatment program readmissions within 12 months. RESULTS: Neither physical injuries nor increases in anxiety or negative affect occurred, as measured by the PANAS (positive change, p = 0.351; negative change, p = 0.605) and the STAI: Y-6 item (p = 0.144) respectively. There was no significant change in FFMQ (p = 0.580) but a significant increase occurred in AAQ II scores (p = 0.036) indicating an increase in psychological flexibility. Survey responses indicated the participants perceived the experience to be both pleasurable and calming. The preliminary outcome evaluation revealed a significant between-group difference (X2 = 5.34, DF = 1, p = 0.02, r = 0.35) indicating participating in SAT was associated with a greater likelihood of successfully completing residential SUD treatment. However, there were no significant between-group differences in number of psychiatric hospitalizations (X2 = 1.09, DF = 1, p = 0.29, r = 0.16) or residential substance abuse treatment program readmissions (X2 = 0.23, DF = 1, p = 0.64, r = 0.07) in the 12 months after discharge from the program. CONCLUSIONS: Preliminary evidence suggests that SAT is physically safe and not associated with increased anxiety or negative affect. Participant's perceptions of the experience were positive. Preliminary outcome measures suggest associations between participation in SAT and increased psychological flexibility as well as successful completion of a residential SUD treatment program. Further research is indicated to determine whether SAT may be developed as an effective complementary intervention for Veterans with SUDs.

BACKGROUND: Adult long-term care (LTC) facilities have high rates of antibiotic use, raising concerns about antimicrobial resistance. Few studies have examined antibiotic use in paediatric LTC facilities. AIM: To describe antibiotic use in three paediatric LTC facilities and to describe the factors associated with use. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted from September 2012 to December 2015 in three paediatric LTC facilities. Medical records were reviewed for demographics, healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), antimicrobial use and diagnostic testing. Logistic regression was used to identify predictors for antibiotic use. The association between susceptibility testing results and appropriate antibiotic coverage was determined using Chi-squared test. FINDINGS: Fifty-eight percent (413/717) of residents had at least one HAI, and 79% (325/413) of these residents were treated with at least one antibiotic course, totalling 2.75 antibiotic courses per 1000 resident-days. Length of enrolment greater than one year, having a neurological disorder, having a tracheostomy, and being hospitalized at least once during the study period were significantly associated with receiving antibiotics when controlling for facility (all P < 0.001). Diagnostic testing was performed for 40% of antibiotic-treated HAIs. Eighty-six percent of antibiotic courses for identified bacterial pathogens (201/233) provided appropriate coverage. Access to susceptibility testing was not associated with appropriate antibiotic choice (P = 0.26). CONCLUSION: Use of antibiotics in paediatric LTC facilities is widespread. There is further need to assess antibiotic use in paediatric LTC facilities. Evaluation of the adverse outcomes associated with inappropriate antibiotic use, including the prevalence of resistant organisms in paediatric LTC facilities, is critical.

Exposure to welding fumes may result in disorders of the pulmonary, cardiovascular, and reproductive systems. Welders are also at a greater risk of developing symptoms similar to those seen in individuals with idiopathic Parkinson's disease. In welders, there are studies that suggest that alterations in circulating prolactin concentrations may be indicative of injury to the dopamine (DA) neurons in the substantia nigra. The goal of these studies was to use an established model of welding particulate exposure to mimic the effects of welding fume inhalation on reproductive functions. Since previous investigators suggested that changes in circulating prolactin may be an early marker of DA neuron injury, movement disorders, and reproductive dysfunction, prolactin, hypothalamic tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) levels (a marker of DA synthesis), and other measures of hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) function were measured after repetitive instillation of welding fume particulates generated by flux core arc-hard surfacing (FCA-HS), manual metal arc-hard surfacing (MMA-HS) or gas metal arc-mild steel (GMA-MS) welding, or manganese chloride (MnCl2). Exposure to welding fume particulate resulted in the accumulation of various metals in the pituitary and testes of rats, along with changes in hypothalamic TH and serum prolactin levels. Exposure to particulates with high concentrations of soluble manganese (Mn) appeared to exert the greatest influence on TH activity levels and serum prolactin concentrations. Thus, circulating prolactin levels may serve as a biomarker for welding fume/Mn-induced neurotoxicity. Other reproductive measures were collected, and these data were consistent with epidemiological findings that prolactin and testosterone may serve as biomarkers of welding particulate induced DA neuron and reproductive dysfunction.

Regulation of respiratory mucosal immunity by microbial-derived metabolites has been a proposed mechanism that may provide airway protection. Here we examine the effect of oral Lactobacillus johnsonii supplementation on metabolic and immune response dynamics during respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. L. johnsonii supplementation reduced airway T helper type 2 cytokines and dendritic cell (DC) function, increased regulatory T cells, and was associated with a reprogrammed circulating metabolic environment, including docosahexanoic acid (DHA) enrichment. RSV-infected bone marrow-derived DCs (BMDCs) from L. johnsonii-supplemented mice had altered cytokine secretion, reduced expression of co-stimulatory molecules, and modified CD4+ T-cell cytokines. This was replicated upon co-incubation of wild-type BMDCs with either plasma from L. johnsonii-supplemented mice or DHA. Finally, airway transfer of BMDCs from L. johnsonii-supplemented mice or with wild-type derived BMDCs pretreated with plasma from L. johnsonii-supplemented mice reduced airway pathological responses to infection in recipient animals. Thus L. johnsonii supplementation mediates airway mucosal protection via immunomodulatory metabolites and altered immune function.

RESUMEN

Soft tissue filler procedures have increased dramatically in popularity in the United States. Synthetic fillers such as calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA), and silicone provide initial volume replacement but have an additional biostimulatory effect to supplement facial volumization. Indications include human immunodeficiency virus lipoatrophy and nasolabial folds for CaHA and PLLA and atrophic acne scars for PMMA. Most clinical use of these synthetic fillers is in an off-label fashion. Beyond the proper choice of a synthetic filler, careful consideration of dilution, injection method, and postprocedural care allows for successful and consistent results.

RESUMEN

Mesotherapy, microneedling, and chemical peels are minimally invasive techniques used to combat facial aging. Chemical peeling is one of the oldest methods of facial rejuvenation. By using different chemicals in various combinations, strengths, and application techniques, plastic surgeons can tailor a patient's treatment for optimal, safe, and consistent results. Mesotherapy and microneedling have emerged in the plastic surgery literature with increasingly complex indications. Both techniques have increased in popularity although research into efficacy and long-term results is lagging. With a thorough understanding of patients and the modalities available, plastic surgeons can use the appropriate minimally invasive technique to provide patients with desired skin changes.

INTRODUCTION: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) and peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) arises from primary or secondary peritoneal cancer and can be treated with complete surgical removal of disease. Suitability for surgery is based on a peritoneal cancer index (PCI), with a PCI ≥ 20 representing unresectable disease. AIMS: Compare preoperative imaging with surgical findings based on PCI. METHODS: All cases of patients with PMP and PC undergoing cytoreductive surgery ± hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) between 2010 and 2014 were included. Two staff radiologists blinded to surgical PCI scores retrospectively reviewed imaging studies to calculate corresponding radiologic PCI scores for each patient. Correlation between radiologic PCI and surgical PCI, as obtained from operative reports, was assessed using Spearman's rho correlation coefficients. Preoperative assessment of a PCI cutoff of 20 on imaging was compared with actual surgical PCI using sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values. RESULTS: Forty-two patients had a mean surgical PCI ± SEM score of 15.1 ± 1.3 and mean radiologic PCI of 15.5 ± 1.5. The most common tumor histologies were appendiceal (60 %) and colon (33 %) adenocarcinoma and were of low tumor grade (67 %). Correlation between individual radiologists and surgical PCI was 0.59 and 0.62, respectively (all p < 0.001). When mean radiologic PCI was used, this correlation with surgical PCI improved to 0.64 and to 0.65 when good quality studies only were considered (all p < 0.001). Radiologic PCI score had a sensitivity of 76 %, a specificity of 69 %, positive predictive value of 85 %, and a negative predictive value of 56 % when compared with the surgical PCI. In patients with a radiologic PCI score ≥ 20, 6/13 (46 %) still achieved adequate cytoreduction. CONCLUSIONS: Good quality cross-sectional imaging, combined with overreading and formal assessment of all components of the PCI score yields the best correlation with actual surgical findings. Although preoperative assessment of PCI ≥ 20 was reasonably accurate, using this cutoff to assess resectability is problematic as almost half of these patients were still able to undergo adequate cytoreduction. Better assessment of resectability is needed preop, either by refinement of the PCI criteria or routine staging laparoscopy.

Euschistus servus (Say), Nezara viridula (L.), and Chinavia hilaris (Say) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) are economic pests of cotton in the coastal plain of the southeastern United States. The objective of this 2-yr study was to determine the ability of trap cropping systems, pheromone-baited stink bug traps, and a synthetic physical barrier at the peanut-to-cotton interface to manage stink bugs in cotton. The physical barrier was the most effective management tactic. Stink bug density in cotton was lowest for this treatment. In 2010, boll injury was lower for the physical barrier compared to the other treatments except for soybean with stink bug traps. In 2011, boll injury was lower for this treatment compared to the control. Soybean was an effective trap crop, reducing both stink bug density in cotton and boll injury regardless if used alone or in combination with either stink bug traps or buckwheat. Incorporation of buckwheat in soybean enhanced parasitism of E. servus egg masses by Telenomus podisi Ashmead in cotton. The insertion of eyelets in the lid of the insect-collecting device of a stink bug trap allowed adult stink bug parasitoids, but not E. servus, to escape. Stand-alone stink bug traps were not very effective in deterring colonization of cotton by stink bugs or reducing boll injury. The paucity of effective alternative control measures available for stink bug management justifies further full-scale evaluations into these management tactics for control of these pests in crops.

BACKGROUND: HAGE protein is a known immunogenic cancer-specific antigen. METHODS: The biological, prognostic and predictive values of HAGE expression was studied using immunohistochemistry in three cohorts of patients with BC (n=2147): early primary (EP-BC; n=1676); primary oestrogen receptor-negative (PER-BC; n=275) treated with adjuvant anthracycline-combination therapies (Adjuvant-ACT); and primary locally advanced disease (PLA-BC) who received neo-adjuvant anthracycline-combination therapies (Neo-adjuvant-ACT; n=196). The relationship between HAGE expression and the tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in matched prechemotherapy and postchemotherapy samples were investigated. RESULTS: Eight percent of patients with EP-BC exhibited high HAGE expression (HAGE+) and was associated with aggressive clinico-pathological features (Ps<0.01). Furthermore, HAGE+expression was associated with poor prognosis in both univariate and multivariate analysis (Ps<0.001). Patients with HAGE+did not benefit from hormonal therapy in high-risk ER-positive disease. HAGE+and TILs were found to be independent predictors for pathological complete response to neoadjuvant-ACT; P<0.001. A statistically significant loss of HAGE expression following neoadjuvant-ACT was found (P=0.000001), and progression-free survival was worse in those patients who had HAGE+residual disease (P=0.0003). CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report to show HAGE to be a potential prognostic marker and a predictor of response to ACT in patients with BC.

We evaluated the effects of white noise played through headphones on off-task behavior, percentage of items completed, and percentage of items completed correctly for 3 students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Headphones plus white noise were associated with decreases in off-task behavior relative to baseline and headphones-only (no white noise) control conditions. Little change in academic responding occurred across conditions for all participants.

OBJECTIVE: Cathartic bowel preparation is a major barrier for colorectal cancer screening. We examined noncathartic CT colonography (CTC) quality and performance using four similar bowel-tagging regimens in an asymptomatic screening cohort. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This prospective study included 564 asymptomatic subjects who underwent noncathartic CTC without dietary modification but with 21 g of barium with or without iodinated oral contrast material (four regimens). The quality of tagging with oral agents was evaluated. A gastrointestinal radiologist evaluated examinations using primary 2D search supplemented by electronic cleansing (EC) and 3D problem solving. Results were compared with complete colonoscopy findings after bowel purgation and with retrospective unblinded evaluation in 556 of the 564 (99%) subjects. RESULTS: Of the 556 subjects, 7% (37/556) and 3% (16/556) of patients had 52 and 20 adenomatous polyps ≥ 6 and ≥ 10 mm, respectively. The addition of iodine significantly improved the percentage of labeled stool (p ≤ 0.0002) and specificity (80% vs 89-93%, respectively; p = 0.046). The overall sensitivity of noncathartic CTC for adenomatous polyps ≥ 6 mm was 76% (28/37; 95% CI, 59-88%), which is similar to the sensitivity of the iodinated regimens with most patients (sensitivity: 231 patients, 74% [14/19; 95% CI, 49-91%]; 229 patients, 80% [12/15; 95% CI, 52-96%]). The negative predictive value was 98% (481/490), and the lone cancer was detected (0.2%, 1/556). EC was thought to improve conspicuity of 10 of 21 visible polyps ≥ 10 mm. CONCLUSION: In this prospective study of asymptomatic subjects, the per-patient sensitivity of noncathartic CTC for detecting adenomas ≥ 6 mm was approximately 76%. Inclusion of oral iodine contrast material improves examination specificity and the percentage of labeled stool. EC may improve polyp conspicuity.

In this study, we have applied three techniques to simultaneously and in situ study the initial stage of corrosion of copper protected by a self-assembled monolayer of octadecanethiol (ODT). We combined quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), indirect nanoplasmonic sensing (INPS), and vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy (VSFS) and obtained complementary information about mass uptake and optical and spectroscopic changes taking place during the initial corrosion phase. All three techniques are very sensitive to the formation of a corrosion film (thickness in the range 0-0.41 nm) under mildly corrosive conditions (dry air, <0.5% relative humidity). The three techniques yield information about the viscoelasticity of the corrosion film (QCM-D), the homogeneity of the corrosion reaction on the surface (INPS), and the stability of the ODT protection layer (VSFS). Furthermore, by also studying the corrosion process in humid air (ca. 70% relative humidity), we illustrate how the combination of these techniques can be used to differentiate between simultaneously occurring processes, such as water adsorption and corrosion product formation.

PURPOSE: The cognitive tendency toward mindfulness may influence the enactment of health and risk behaviors by its bringing increased attention to and awareness of decision-making processes underlying behavior. The present study examined the moderating effect of trait mindfulness on associations between intentions to smoke (ITS)/smoking refusal self-efficacy (SRSE) and smoking frequency. METHODS: Self-reports from Chinese adolescents (N = 5,287; mean age = 16.2 years, standard deviation = .7; 48.8% female) were collected in 24 schools. Smoking frequency was regressed on latent factor interactions Mindful Attention Awareness Scale*ITS and Mindful Attention Awareness Scale*SRSE, adjusting for school clustering effects and covariates. RESULTS: Both interaction terms were significant in cross-sectional analyses and showed that high ITS predicted higher smoking frequency among those low, relative to high, in trait mindfulness, whereas low SRSE predicted higher smoking frequency among those low, relative to high, in trait mindfulness. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest trait mindfulness possibly shields against decision-making processes that place adolescents at risk for smoking.

OBJECTIVES: Although homebound older adults are at increased risk for poor nutritional health and adverse nutrition-related outcomes, little attention has focused on the tasks involved in meal preparation and consumption and the influence of those tasks on dietary intake. METHODS: We examined the self-reported dietary intake from 3, 24-h dietary recalls and physical limitations in meal preparation and consumption (LMPC) activities from a randomly recruited sample of 345 homebound older men and women. Ordered logistic regression was used to examine the correlation of demographic characteristics and 6 activities with relative intakes of key musculoskeletal nutrients (calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, and phosphorus). RESULTS: At least 70% reported not meeting ⅔ recommended intakes for calcium and vitamin D; 12.5% failed to achieve ⅔ recommended intakes in at least three of the four nutrients. More than 12% of the sample reported it was very difficult or they were unable to perform at least 3 LMPC tasks. Regression results indicated that reporting the greatest LMPC increased the odds for lower intake of musculoskeletal nutrients. CONCLUSION: Independent of sociodemographic characteristics, self-reported difficulty in meal preparation and consumption was associated with lower dietary intakes of musculoskeletal nutrients. These results suggest the need to assess difficulty in meal preparation and consumption for the growing population of homebound older adults who participate in supplemental nutrition programs. This brief, 6-item measure may help identify older adults at risk of poor nutritional health and declining function.

Mindfulness refers to an enhanced attention to and awareness of present moment experience. This study examined how trait mindfulness, as measured with six items from Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale, might influence adolescent cigarette smoking frequency through its impact on depressive affect, anger affect and perceived stress mediators. Self-reported data from Chinese adolescents (N = 5287, mean age = 16.2 years, SD = 0.7; 48.8% females) were collected within 24 schools. The product of coefficients test was used to determine significant mediation paths. Results from baseline cross-sectional data indicated that trait mindfulness had a significant indirect effect on past 30-day smoking frequency through depressive affect, anger affect and perceived stress mediators. Results from 13-month longitudinal data indicated that these indirect effects remained significant for depressive affect and perceived stress but not for anger affect. Findings from this study may suggest that heightening mindfulness among adolescents may indirectly reduce cigarette smoking perhaps by improving affect regulation competencies.

The Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) has the longest empirical track record as a valid measure of trait mindfulness. Most of what is understood about trait mindfulness comes from administering the MAAS to relatively homogenous samples of Caucasian adults. This study rigorously evaluates the psychometric properties of the MAAS among Chinese adolescents attending high school in Chengdu, China. Classrooms from 24 schools were randomly selected to participate in the study. Three waves of longitudinal data (N = 5,287 students) were analyzed. MAAS construct, nomological, and incremental validity were evaluated as well as its measurement invariance across gender using latent factor analyses. Participants' mean age was 16.2 years (SD = 0.7), and 51% were male. The 15-item MAAS had adequate fit to the one-dimensional factor structure at Wave 1, and this factor structure was replicated at Wave 2. A 6-item short scale of the MAAS fit well to the data at Wave 3. The MAAS maintained reliability (Cronbach's α = .89-.93; test-restest r = .35-.52), convergent/discriminant validity, and explained additional variance in mental health measures beyond other psychosocial constructs. Both the 15- and 6-item MAAS scales displayed at least partial factorial invariance across gender. The findings suggest that the MAAS is a sound measure of trait mindfulness among Chinese adolescents. To reduce respondent burden, the MAAS 6-item short-scale provides an option to measure trait mindfulness.
