RESUMEN

AIM: This study aims to explore the potential of Osmundacetone (OSC) as a new treatment for infantile hemangiomas (IH), the most common benign tumors in infancy. Currently, propranolol serves as the primary treatment for IH, but its effectiveness is limited, and it poses challenges of drug resistance and side effects. Therefore, there is a pressing need to identify alternative therapies for IH. METHODS: The effects of OSC on the proliferation and apoptosis of HemECs (endothelial cells from hemangiomas) were assessed using CCK-8 assay, colony formation assay, HOCHEST 33342 staining, and flow cytometry. Western blot analysis was performed to investigate OSC's influence on Caspases and angiogenesis-related proteins. Animal models were established using HemECs and BALB/c mice, and histological and immunohistochemical staining were conducted to evaluate the impact of OSC on mouse hemangiomas, VEGFR2, and MMP9 expression. RESULTS: OSC treatment significantly reduced HemECs' viability and colony-forming ability, while promoting apoptosis, as indicated by increased HOCHEST 33342 staining. OSC upregulated the protein expression of Bax, PARP, Caspase9, Caspase3, AIF, Cyto C, FADD, and Caspase8 in HemECs. In animal models, OSC treatment effectively reduced hemangioma size and improved histopathological changes. OSC also suppressed VEGFR2 and MMP9 expression while elevating Caspase3 levels in mouse hemangiomas. CONCLUSION: OSC demonstrated promising results in inhibiting HemECs' proliferation, inducing apoptosis, and ameliorating pathological changes in hemangiomas in mice. Moreover, it influenced the expression of crucial caspases and angiogenesis-related proteins. These findings suggest that OSC holds potential as a novel drug for clinical treatment of IH.

RESUMEN

Nocardiosis caused by Nocardia seriolae is a major threat to the aquaculture industry. Given that prolonged therapy administration can lead to a growth of antibiotic resistant strains, new antibacterial agents and alternative strategies are urgently needed. In this study, 80 medicinal plants were selected for antibacterial screening to obtain potent bioactive compounds against N. seriolae infection. The methanolic extracts of Magnolia officinalis exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity against N. seriolae with the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 12.5 µg/ml. Honokiol and magnolol as the main bioactive components of M. officinalis showed higher activity with the MIC value of 3.12 and 6.25 µg/ml, respectively. Sequentially, the evaluation of antibacterial activity of honokiol in vivo showed that honokiol had good biosafety, and could significantly reduce the bacterial load of nocardia-infected largemouth bass (p < .001). Furthermore, the survival rate of nocardia-infected fish fed with 100 mg/kg honokiol was obviously improved (p < .05). Collectively, these results suggest that medicinal plants represent a promising reservoir for discovering active components against Nocardia, and honokiol has great potential to be developed as therapeutic agents to control nocardiosis in aquaculture.

RESUMEN

The literature of Japanese medical acupuncture introduced before 1949 has a definite impact on Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion in the period of Republic of China and the early period of the establishment of the People's Republic of China. In the present paper, the authors introduce its impact from: 1) Chinese medical works on acupuncture and moxibustion absorbed a lot of western medicine knowledge, and interpreted some underlying mechanisms chiefly according to the theory of nerve, blood and endocrine, including the meridian-collateral theory based on the structures of blood vessels, lymph vessels, nerves, etc.; 2) In some Chinese clinical books, some Japanese new techniques as "tube-needling" (sparrow-pecking needling, etc.) were introduced, the acupuncture treatment of disorders was discussed from the nomenclature of western medicine and some operative standards (dissection of acupuncture needles, etc.) in clinical practice were accepted; 3) Some western medicine courses, and subject settings were introduced in Chinese acupuncture education. In general, Japanese acupuncture literature introduced before 1949 promotes integration of traditional acupuncture theory and western medicine in the early period of new China, enriches practical techniques in clinical practice and accelerates the development of acupuncture education in some way.

RESUMEN

Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common and one of the most severe symptom in the period of onset, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation process of cancer. But there are no confirmed measures to relieve this problem at present. Traditional Chinese medical comprehensive therapy has its advantages in dealing with this condition. Based on the research status of CRF, the following problems have been analyzed and solved: the term of CRF has been defined and recommended, and the definition has been made clear; the disease mechanism is proposed, i.e. healthy qi has been impaired in the long-term disease duration, in the process of surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and biology disturbing; it is clear that the clinical manifestations are related to six Chinese medicine patterns: decreased functioning of the Pi (Spleen) and Wei (Stomach), deficiency of the Pi with dampness retention, deficiency of the Xin (Heart) and Pi, disharmony between the Gan (Liver) and Pi, deficiency of the Pi and Shen (Kidney), and deficiency of the Fei (Lung) and Shen. Based on its severity, the mild patients are advised to have non-drug psychological intervention and sleep treatment in cooperation with appropriate exercise; diet therapy are recommended to moderate patients together with sleep treatment and acupuncture, severe patients are recommended to have herbal treatment based on pattern differentiation together with physiological sleep therapy.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether an iron-fortified formula with a concentration of lactoferrin would significantly improve the hematologic indexes and iron status in term infants compared with those same values in infants fed an iron-fortified formula without lactoferrin. METHOD: In this prospective, multicenter, controlled intervention study, 260 infants ages 4 to 6 mo were selected from six maternal and children's health care hospitals in the area. All infants were divided into two groups with the sequence of outpatient: lactoferrin-fortified formula milk group (fortified group, FG, containing lactoferrin 38 mg/100 g milk and iron element 4 mg/100 g milk) and no lactoferrin fortified milk (control group, CG, containing lactoferrin 0 mg/100 g milk and iron element 4 mg/100 g milk) for 3 mo. The levels of weight, height, and head circumference and the concentration of hemoglobin (Hb), serum ferritin (SF), and serum transferring receptor (sTfR) were measured and sTfR-SF index (TFR-F index), total body iron content (TBIC) and low height for age (HAZ), low weight for age (WAZ), and low weight for height (WHZ) were computed before and after the intervention, respectively. RESULTS: In all, 213 (115 in FG and 98 in CG) infants completed the intervention trial and all measurements of biochemical indicators. There were no significant differences in the average amount of daily intake of formula milk (94.3 ± 9.8 g versus 88.2 ± 8.7 g for FG and CG; P > 0.05) and iron element (3.8 ± 0.4 mg versus 3.7 ± 0.6 mg for FG and CG; P > 0.05). The average amount of daily intake of lactoferrin for infants in FG group was 35.8 ± 3.7 mg. The levels of weight, WAZ, WHZ, Hb, SF, TFR-F index, and TBIC after intervention of infants in FG were all significantly higher than those of infants in CG weight, 8723 ± 245 g versus 8558 ± 214g; WAZ, 1.02 ± 0.31 versus 0.44 ± 0.18; WHZ, 0.98 ± 0.31 versus 0.41 ± 0.12; Hb, 125.5 ± 15.4 g/L versus 116.9 ± 13.1 g/L; SF, 44.7 ± 17.2 µg/L versus 31.6 ± 18.4 µg/L; TFR-F index, 1.88 ± 0.41 versus 1.26 ± 0.39; TBIC, 6.12 ± 0.78 mg/kg versus 5.26 ± 0.55 mg/kg for FG and CG; P < 0.05), but significantly lower (P < 0.05) for the prevalence of anemia (4.1% versus 7.5%), iron deficiency (13.9% versus 24.4%), and iron-deficient anemia (1.7% versus 6.1%). CONCLUSION: When infants who were exclusively breastfed were supplemented with lactoferrin-fortified milk, significant increases in TBIC and iron absorption in the intestine were seen.

RESUMEN

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the protective effect of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (tadalafil) on the testis following testicular ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Eighty-four healthy adult male SD rats were randomly and equally divided into groups A (sham operation), B (testicular torsion + low-dose tadalafil), C (testicular torsion + high-dose tadalafil), and D (testicular torsion + placebo). Models were established in the latter three groups by 7200 torsion of the right testis for 2 hours. The animals in groups A and B were treated by gavage with tadalafil at the dose of 0. 5 mg per kg per day, those in group C at 2 mg per kg per day, and those in group D with saline at the same dose. After 3, 7, and 14 days of treatment, the torsioned testes were harvested for evaluation of the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in the testis tissue. The pathological changes in the testis were observed under the light microscope.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>At 3, 7, and 14 days, the SOD activity was (254.46 +/- 7.43), (278.49 +/- 8.33), and (317.99 +/- 3.31) nU/mg prot in group B, and (277.12 +/- 8.80), (309.40 +/- 2.14), and (320.39 +/- 4.72) nU/mg prot in group C, all obviously higher than in D ([223.21 +/- 4.65], [231.45 +/- 4.16] and [248.28 +/- 5.74] nU/mg prot), while the MDA content was lower in the former two groups than in the latter. At 3 and 7 days, the SOD activity was significantly higher and the MDA level significantly lower in group C than in B (both P < 0.01) , while at 14 days, neither showed any remarkable differences between the two groups (P > 0.05). No obvious histopathological change was observed in the testis tissue of group A. At 3 and 7 days, pathological examination of the testis tissue revealed significant differences in the number of seminiferous epithelial layers, testicular histological score, and seminiferous tubule diameter in group B (P < 0.01), but the three indexes at 14 days in group B and at 7 days in group C exhibited no remarkable differences from those at 14 days in group A.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Tadalafil can alleviate testicular ischemia-reperfusion injury following testis torsion/detorsion in a time- and dose-dependent manner.</p>

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the effect of Cornus Officinalis total glycosides (COTG) and Cornus polysaccharides (CP) on myocardial mitochondria and expression levels of glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) rats.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The AMI rat model was established by ligating the left anterior descending branch of coronary artery. Rats were divided into 5 groups according to random digit table, i.e., the sham-operation group, the model group, the COTG prevention group, the CP treatment group, the COTG treatment group, 12 in each group. Normal saline was administered to rats in the normal control group and the model group by gastrogavage. Corresponding medication was respectively administered to rats in the rest 3 groups by gastrogavage. The cardiac function was detected by echocardiography and hemodynamics. The infarct size was determined by Masson trichrome staining. The expression of mitochondrial biogenesis genes such as a subunit of peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor-γ coactivator-1 (PGC-1α), PGC-1β, nuclear respiratory factor-1 (NRF-1), and GSK-3P mRNA were detected by Real-time PCR.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Compared with the sham-operation group, the myocardial infarction size increased, cardiac function decreased, the expression of PGC-1α, PGC-1β, and NRF-1 mRNA decreased, and the expression of GSK-3β mRNA increased (all P <0. 05). Compared with the model group, myocardial infarction sizes were reduced, cardiac function was improved, the expression of NRF-1 mRNA was elevated in the COTG prevention group, the CP treatment group, the COTG treatment group; the expression of the PGC-1α and PGC-1β mRNA was elevated in the COTG prevention group and the CP treatment group; the expression of GSK-3β mRNA was reduced in the CP treatment group (all P <0. 05). Compared with the CP prevention group, fractional shortening (FS) and aortic systolic blood pressure (SBP) increased in the CP treatment group; ejection fraction (EF) decreased in the CP treatment group; the expression of PGC-1α, PGC-1β, NRF-1 mRNA were reduced in the the CP treatment group and the COTG treatment group; the expression of GSK-3β mRNA decreased in the CP treatment group (all P <0. 05). Compared with the COTG treatment group, FS, EF, left ventricular end systolic pressure (LVESP), SBP, and the expression of GSK-3β mRNA were reduced in the CP treatment group (P <0. 05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>COTG and CP could improve cardiac function, reduce the myocardial infarction area, and promote biogenesis of myocardial mitochondria. Their protective effects on the mitochondria of cadiocytes might be achieved by GSK-3β signalina pathway.</p>

RESUMEN

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore the effect of vitamin A (VA) combined iron supplements on iron metabolic homeostasis for preschoolers.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>About 445 preschoolers with aged 3-6 years old from eight kindergartens in Pixian county, Chengdu were recruited into this trial from March to September, 2011. All subjects met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into four groups using random number table: sole VA supplementation group (VA group, a single oral dose of VA at about 200 000 units), sole iron supplementation group (FE group, daily oral supplementation with the element iron 1-2 mg·kg(-1)·d(-1) for five days a week, lasting for 6 months), the combined supplementation of VA and iron group (VF group) and control group (CO group, no VA and iron supplementation). The concentration of serum VA, serum ferritin (SF), serum transferring receptor (sTfR), C-reactive protein (CRP) and hemoglobin (Hb) were measured from 3 ml vein blood. The sTfR-SF index (TFR-F index) and total body iron content (TBIC) before and after intervention were calculated. The differences of these indexes between groups before and after intervention were analyzed.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The level of sTfR before intervention in VA group ((1.78 ± 0.17) mg/L) was significantly higher than that of after intervention ((1.18 ± 0.11)mg/L) (t = 28.88, P < 0.01). The levels of TFR-F index and TBIC in FE and VF groups before intervention ( (1.59 ± 0.37), (1.63 ± 0.40) and (9.04 ± 2.71), (9.26 ± 2.33) mg/kg, respectively) were all lower than those of after intervention (TFR-F index:(1.84 ± 0.51), (1.87 ± 0.45) and TBIC:(12.42 ± 3.49), (13.01 ± 2.98)mg/kg) (t values were 3.93, 3.78, 7.57 and 9.41, respectively, all P values were <0.01). The incidence of iron deficiency in VA, FE, and VF groups before intervention were 26% (25/95), 31% (30/98) and 31% (28/90) and were 41% (39/95), 10% (10/98) and 18% (16/90) for after intervention, respectively. The difference of this index in VA, FE and VF groups were significant (χ(2) values were 4.59, 12.50 and 4.31, respectively, all the P values were <0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Combined VA and iron was as effective as VA alone or iron alone in decreasing the iron deficiency, the impact of VA intervention on iron metabolic homeostasis was mainly manifested in iron usage and mobilization, but showed no effect on total body iron content.</p>

RESUMEN

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To evaluate the effect of vitamin A, vitamin A plus iron and "7 + 1" multiple micronutrient-fortified seasoning powder on iron metabolic homeostasis in preschool children.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>This was a randomized, controlled and blinded interventional field trial. A total of 226 2 - 7 years old preschool children were recruited from three nurseries in the area, and they were randomly assigned into three different fortified diet groups for 6 months. The subjects in Group I were fortified with vitamin A; those in Group II and III were fortified with vitamin A plus iron and vitamin A plus iron, thiamine, riboflavin, folic acid, niacinamide, zinc and calcium (7 + 1), respectively. The concentration of serum vitamin A was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), serum ferritin (SF) was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) was measured by microparticle-enhanced, and hemoglobin (HB) by hemiglobincyanide, the sTfR-SF index (TFR-F index) and total body iron content were computed respectively before and after intervention. Simultaneously, children's demographic data, socio-economic status and eating habits, etc. were investigated by questionnaires.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>A total of 226 preschool children were included in the study with age ranged from 2 to 7 years with average age (4.0 ± 0.85) (means ± standard deviation). The prevalence of anemia, deficient iron storage, vitamin A deficiency (VAD) and suspect sub-clinical vitamin A deficiency (SSVAD) were 23.5%, 15.0%, 6.3% and 25.9%, respectively. The levels of SF and sTfR significantly decreased after intervention in all groups (χ(2) = 8.3298, χ(2) = 16.1471, χ(2) = 15.1371, χ(2) = 15.1171, χ(2) = 5.2617, χ(2) = 4.8844, P < 0.05) especially in group II and group III for SF (χ(2) = 16.1471, χ(2) = 15.1371, P < 0.05) and group I for sTfR (χ(2) = 15.1171, P < 0.05). No marked change of TFR-F index and total body iron contents was observed in group I (t = 0.1817, t = 1.7736, P > 0.05), while TFR-F index decreased and total body iron contents increased in group II and group III (t = 5.3561, t = 6.5979, t = 11.1663, t = 8.7306, P < 0.05) after intervention.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Vitamin A intervention has significant effect on iron storage and mobilization but seldom effect on iron absorption in small intestine. The combination of vitamin A and other micronutrients might be a better intervention for the improvement of iron deficiency for preschool-children.</p>

RESUMEN

The paper is to report the establishment of a method for the determination of multi-residue organochlorine and pyrethroid pesticides in traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs). Fifty-six pesticides were extracted by high-speed homogenization, and then purified through gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridges. The residues were simultaneously identified and quantified by GC-ECD equipped with dual tower, dual column and two micro-ECD detectors. The analytical performance was demonstrated by the analysis of 3 TCMs samples' extracts, spiked at three concentration levels for each pesticide. In general, the recoveries ranging from 70% to 110%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) better than 15%, were obtained. The limit of detection (LOD) for most of the targeted pesticides tested was below 0.01 mg kg(-1). The method had good extraction efficiency, purification effect and good reproducibility, which could be applied to the determination of organochlorine and pyrethroid pesticide residues in the routine analysis of TCMs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is easily seen in postmenopausal women. The bone loss situation is different among populations of different age and body mass.OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of age, menopausal duration, menopause age, height, body mass and body mass index on bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women.DESIGN: Random sampling test was conducted to postmenopausal women.SETTING: A clinical trial center of a provincial Chinese traditional medicine research institute, an orthopaedic department of a university hospital and a bone wound department of a university.PARTICIPANTS: Totally 603 naturally postmenopausal women in Fuzhou area from September 2000 to August 2003.METHODS: Random sampling method was used. The age of participants, menopausal duration, menopause age, height, body mass and bone mineral index(BMI) were recorded. Dual energy X-ray bone mineral density machine was used to examine the bone mineral density of lumbar, neck of femur, great trochanter and Ward' s area while SPSS software was used to conduct regression analysis.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The correlation between age, menopausal years, menopause age, height, body mass, BMI and bone density as well as the regression equation.RESULTS: There was very significant correlation between age, menopausal duration, body mass, BMI of postmenopausal women and bone mineral density of lumbar, neck of femur, great trochanter and Ward' s area. The BMD in low body mass group is greatly lower than that of obesity group( P < 0.01 ). The main factors impacting BMD of lumbar are in turn age, body mass and menopause age while the regression equation: y = 0. 927 - 0. 0093 X1+ 0. 0037X2 + 0. 004X3. The factors impacting BMD of neck of femur are in turn menopausal duration, body mass, menopause age and the regression equation was: y = 0. 687 - 0. 0081 X1 + 0. 0048 X2 - 0. 0034 X3. And the factors affecting BMD of greattrochanter are age, body mass and menopause age while the regression equation was y = 0. 591 - 0. 0038 X1 + 0. 0042 X2 - 0. 0024 X3. Age, body mass index and menopausal duration are main factors affecting BMD of Ward' s area and the regression equation was y =0. 686 -0. 0072 X1 +0. 0136 X2 -0. 0046 X3.CONCLUSION: The BMD of lumbar and hip gradually decreases with the increase of age in postmenopausal women. The risk of getting osteoporosis in people with low body mass is greater than women in normal body mass groupand obesity group.
