RESUMEN

Feeding during normal reproduction is often not thought of until there is a problem with conception or gestational losses. Energy demands of lactation and early puppy/kitten are of concern, particularly in large and giant breed dogs where mineral balance is crucial to normal development. There is a paucity of information around optimizing feeding during conception and gestation with many myths around ingredients which will be explored in this article along with supplements that may be able to support spermatogenesis and conception which primarily comes from the human literature and may have validity in times of difficult conception.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Scalp acupuncture (SA) is a new acupuncture method that connects head acupoints and aculines, and many systematic reviews (SRs) have been published on its use against neuropsychiatric diseases. However, no overview of SRs on the effectiveness of SA in stroke recovery has been conducted. Therefore, our overview aims to evaluate the methodological bias and reliability of the conclusions of SRs regarding SA for stroke recovery and help clinical decision-makers translate this research into clinical policy and practice. METHODS: We will consider SRs and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effects of SA on stroke recovery. Two reviewers will identify relevant studies, extract data information, and assess the methodological quality using the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews-2 tool. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses report checklist will also be included in the study to assess the quality of the reports. We will use evaluations of the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation of the authors of the included SRs. The Risk of Bias in Systematic Review tool will be used to assess the risk of bias of SRs. The screening of SRs, eligibility evaluation, data extraction, methodological quality, and quality of evidence will be conducted by independent reviewers in pairs. The outcomes of interest include the Modified Edinburgh-Scandinavian Stroke Scale, Ability of Daily Living, Functional Independence Measure, Barthel index, Fugl-Meyer assessment, clinical effective rate, and adverse events. Data will be extracted using predefined forms designed to summarize the important characteristics of each review. The evidence will be a descriptive synthesis of the type and content of the intervention and the results reported. RESULTS: The results will be published in a peer-reviewed journal. CONCLUSIONS: We expect to organize evidence from multiple SRs on the effectiveness of SA for stroke recovery and synthesize the findings in an accessible and useful documentation.

In South Korea, car insurance that includes medical coverage of traditional Korean medicine (TKM) has increased exponentially. Clinical practice guidelines (CPG) for traffic injuries were established in 2016. We aimed to revise and update de novo CPG and distribute the adapted CPG to TKM practitioners and patients. Clinical key questions from previous CPG were identified and updated regarding the grade of recommendation and level of evidence using additional evidence from the literature obtained through a systematic search and the use of the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation methodology. The dissemination and implementation of the updated CPG were conducted at the CPG Center of Korean Medicine. Ultimately, 25 recommendations based on 13 clinical key questions were developed: 2 for diagnosis, 22 for TKM treatments, and 1 for prognosis. After recognition by professional societies and certification by the CPG Center of Korean Medicine, leaflets, card news, and infographics for TKM doctors in South Korea were produced and distributed. These are the only TKM CPG for patients who have experienced traffic injuries. They are expected to contribute to standardized and evidence-based treatment using TKM and similar interventions. Moreover, disseminating the adapted CPG will promote treatment reliability and strengthen insurance coverage.

Background: Obesity induced by excessive nutrients can cause fatty liver and metabolic dysfunction, which leads to hepatic dysfunction and local/systemic inflammatory responses. Previously, we analyzed the antioxidant, antilipotoxicity, and anti-inflammatory effects of protein hydrolysates in vitro. The aim of the present study is to investigate the antiobesity and hepatoprotective effects of protein hydrolysates derived from Protaectia brevitas (PHPB) in an obese mouse model. Methods: For this in vivo study, 40 mice were included and divided into four groups: (1) normal diet group, (2) high-fat-diet (ctrl(-)) group, (3) high-fat-diet and silymarin-treated (ctrl(+)) group, and (4) high-fat-diet and PHPB-treated group. After 6 weeks of treatment, body weight and the amount of daily food intake were observed. Moreover, the major organs and blood of animals were collected for the analysis of serum chemistry, histopathological examination, and obesity- and inflammation-related gene expressions. Results: The body weight and the amount of daily food intake significantly decreased in the PHPB-treated group compared with those in the ctrl(-) group. The levels of serum ALT, AST, ALP, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, glucose, bilirubin, total cholesterol, TG, low-density lipoprotein, IL-6, TNF-α, and IGF-1 significantly reduced in the PHPB-treated group, whereas the serum free fatty acid, albumin, high-density lipoprotein, and adiponectin concentrations increased. In the analysis of weight of the liver, kidney, lungs, spleen, and fat tissues (from epididymal, perirenal, and mesentery tissues), the PHPB-treated group showed decreased values compared with the ctrl(-) group. In the histopathological analysis, the PHPB-treated group showed significantly reduced macrovesicular fatty change and inflammatory cell infiltration in the liver, and the size of the adipocyte in the epididymis also significantly decreased. The obesity- and inflammation-related gene (IL-6, TNF-α, IGF-1, leptin, AP2/FABP4, AMPK-α2, ß3AR, and PPAR-γ) expressions in the liver and epididymal adipose tissue were reduced in the PHPB-treated group. Conclusions: Overall, the results of this study suggest that the protein hydrolysates that derived from Protaectia brevitas produce antiobesity and hepatoprotective effects via anti-inflammatory activities.

BACKGROUND: Studies in both Eastern & Western countries such as the United States and Europe have evaluated the efficacy of acupuncture for whiplash injury or whiplash-associated disorder (WAD). However, no systematic reviews on the effectiveness of acupuncture on WAD have been conducted since 2014. Therefore, we are planning an updated systematic review of studies published since 2014 to overcome the limitations of existing evidence. METHODS: Literature will be identified from searches of relevant databases, including international databases such as PubMed, Ovid-Medline, Embase, The Cochrane Library, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Korean databases such as Korea Med, Korean Studies Information Service System, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System, and National Digital Science Library. Only randomized controlled trials using acupuncture or electro-acupuncture for whiplash injury will be included. The primary outcomes will be the visual analog scale or numerical rating scale of the neck pain, while the secondary outcome is the range of motion of the neck. The risk of bias for individual papers will be assessed by two independent investigators using the Cochrane "Risk of Bias" assessment tool. DISSEMINATION: We plan to report the results of the study in a peer-reviewed journal after completing the research. In addition, we expect this study to provide invaluable information to clinicians treating patients with WAD with acupuncture or electro-acupuncture. We report a cascaded ring resonator (CRR) based, silicon photonic temperature sensor for simultaneous sensitivity and range enhancement. To achieve the dual enhancement, the proposed CRR temperature sensor employs two micro ring resonators with different temperature sensitivities and different free spectral ranges (FSRs). The differences in the temperature sensitivities and FSRs are obtained by tailoring the in-plane geometric parameters of the two ring resonators. The CRR temperature sensor was fabricated by using a single-mask complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible process. The experimental results demonstrated a temperature sensitivity of 293.9 pm/°C, which was 6.3 times higher than that of an individual ring resonator. The sensor was also shown to enhance the temperature sensing range by 5.3 times.

BACKGROUND: Renal interstitial fibrosis is characterized by excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix, which leads to end-stage renal failure. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore the effect of Elsholtzia ciliata (Thunb.) Hylander ethanol extract (ECE) on renal interstitial fibrosis induced by unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). STUDY DESIGN: After quantitative analysis of ECE using the high performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array (HPLC-PDA) method, an in vitro study was performed to assess the anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects of ECE, using lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß), respectively. METHODS: For in vivo study, all male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats (n=10/group), except for those in the control group, underwent UUO. The rats were orally treated with water (control), captopril (positive control, 200 mg/kg), and ECE (300 and 500 mg/kg) for 14 days. RESULTS: In ECE, luteolin and rosmarinic acid were relatively abundant among the other flavonoids and phenolic acids. ECE treatment ameliorated LPS-induced overexpression of nuclear factor-κB, tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 and improved oxidative stress in RAW 264.7 cells. Furthermore, ECE treatment suppressed TGF-ß-induced α-smooth muscle actin and matrix metalloproteinase 9 expression in human renal mesangial cells. In the UUO model, 14 consecutive days of ECE treatment improved UUO-induced renal damage and attenuated histopathological alterations and interstitial fibrosis. Moreover, the renal expression of TNF-α, TGF-ß, and Smad 3 were inhibited by ECE treatment. CONCLUSION: Taken together, the effects of ECE may be mediated by blocking the activation of TGF-ß and inflammatory cytokines, leading subsequently to degradation of the ECM accumulation pathway. Based on these findings, ECE might serve as an improved treatment strategy for renal fibrotic disease.

The present research was the first to investigate phenolic compound profiles and antioxidant properties in the seeds of various perilla (Perilla frutescens) cultivars. The 80% methanol extract (50 µg/ml) of this species showed potent antioxidant activities against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) radicals. Phenolic compounds were characterised by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and ultra performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detector and electrospray ionisation/mass (UPLC-PDA-ESI/MS) analysis. Nine compounds were elucidated as caffeic acid-3-O-glucoside (1), caffeic acid (2), luteolin-7-O-glucoside (3), apigenin-7-O-glucoside (4), rosmarinic acid-3-O-glucoside (5), rosmarinic acid (6), luteolin (7), apigenin (8), and chrysoeriol (9). The individual and total phenolic contents were remarkably different, especially rosmarinic acid-3-O-glucoside (5) and rosmarinic acid (6) which were the predominant compounds (>95%) in all perilla cultivars. Additionally, Yeupsil cultivar exhibited the highest phenolic content (5029.0 µg/g) and antioxidant activity, whereas the lowest was shown by Dasil (2138.7 µg/g). Therefore, these results suggest that antioxidant effects of perilla seeds are correlated with phenolic contents.

Five phenolic compounds were isolated from the seeds of Perilla (Perilla frutescens L.) using gradient solvent fractionation, silica gel column chromatography, and preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Their chemical structures were identified as caffeic acid-3-O-glucoside (1), rosmarinic acid-3-O-glucoside (2), rosmarinic acid (3), luteolin (4), and apigenin (5) using NMR spectroscopy and HPLC-ESI/MS analysis. Among them, luteolin (4) inhibited α-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.20) with IC(50) value of 45.4µM. The inhibition kinetic analysed by Dixon plot indicate that luteolin is a noncompetitive inhibitor, and the inhibition constant K(I) was calculated at 45.0µM. Moreover, rosmarinic acid (3) and luteolin (4) inhibited recombinant human aldose reductase (EC 1.1.1.21) with IC(50) values of 11.2 and 0.6µM, respectively. Notably, the inhibition kinetic of luteolin (4) follows a hyperbolic dependence on aldose reductase inhibition by Dixon plot. Thus, inhibition kinetic indicates that luteolin (4) is a mixed-type inhibitor.

We investigated the effect of DL-alpha-lipoic acid (LA) supplementation and regular aerobic exercise on the concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and vitamin E, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and the levels of glutathione (GSH) in rat skeletal muscles (soleus and red gastrocnemius). For 8 weeks, rats (n = 7 per group) were (1) exercised on a treadmill for 30 min d(-1), (2) treated with supplemental LA, or (3) exercised and treated with supplemental LA. Control rats (n = 7) did not receive LA and were not exercised. DL-alpha-lipoic acid (100 mg kg(-1)) was administered daily as an oral supplement. The rats were exercised in a graded manner for 5 d wk(-1). The concentration of MDA in the soleus and red gastrocnemius was significantly lower in rats that exercised and received LA than in the other groups. Compared with the other groups, rats that exercised and received LA had a significantly higher vitamin E concentration in the soleus. The SOD and GPx activities in the soleus and red gastrocnemius were significantly higher in rats that exercised and received LA. These results suggest that LA supplementation combined with aerobic treadmill exercise inhibits lipid peroxidation in skeletal muscles. This effect was especially remarkable in the soleus, which is particularly sensitive to oxidative stress, as revealed by the increased vitamin E level and SOD and GPx activities.

We investigated the effect of long-term treatment (6 wk) with selenium and vitamin E, in combination with aerobic exercise training, on malondialdehyde (MDA), oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in STZ-induced diabetic rats. The rats were assigned randomly to one of three treatment groups (n = 12 per group); 1) exercise group (EX), 2) selenium/vitamin E/exercise group (SVE), and 3) selenium/vitamin E group (SV). To estimate the acute effect of exercise, a 30-min endurance exercise was used. The MDA concentration was significantly lower in the SVE. The ox-LDL was significantly lower in the SVE and SV. The hepatic concentrations of selenium and vitamin E were significantly higher in the SVE. These results indicate that the increase in MDA is mildly attenuated in rats that were aerobically trained. Moreover, the joint administration of selenium and vitamin E with or without exercise training reduces the levels of ox-LDL.

Two new steroidal saponins, aspaoligonins A (2) and B (3), were isolated from the methanolic extract of the rhizomes of Asparagus oligoclonos together with a known spirostanol saponin, asparanin A (1). Aspaoligonins A and B were characterized as (25S*)-5beta-spirostan-3beta,17alpha-diol 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1-->2)-beta-D-glucopyranoside and (25S*)-5beta-spirostan-3beta,17alpha-diol 3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyanosyl (1-->4)-[beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->2)]-beta-D-glucopyranoside, respectively, by spectrometric analyses including HRFABMS and 2D NMR. Compounds 1-3 were cytotoxic against five human tumor cell lines with IC50 values of 2.05-2.84 microg/mL.
