BACKGROUND: Gastrodia elata Blume (GEB), a traditional medicinal herb, has been reported to have pharmacological effect including protection against liver, neuron and kidney toxicity. However, explanation of its underlying mechanisms remains a great challenge. This study investigated the protective effects of GEB extract on vancomycin (VAN)-induced nephrotoxicity in rats and underlying mechanisms with emphasis on the anti-oxidative stress, anti-inflammation and anti-apoptosis. The male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided three groups: control (CON) group, VAN group and GEB group with duration of 14 days. RESULTS: The kidney weight and the serum levels of blood urea nitrogen and creatinine in the GEB group were lower than the VAN group. Histological analysis using hematoxylin & eosin and periodic acid Schiff staining revealed pathological changes of the VAN group. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that the expression levels of N-acetyl-D-glucosaminidase, myeloperoxidase and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in the GEB group were decreased when compared with the VAN group. The number of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling-positive cells, phosphohistone and malondialdehyde levels were lower in the GEB group than VAN group. The levels of total glutathione in the GEB group were higher than the VAN group. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study suggested that GEB extract prevents VAN-induced renal tissue damage through anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation and anti-apoptosis.

Vitamin D may have anticancer effects against colorectal cancer (CRC). Bone mineral density (BMD) reflects the long-term vitamin D status. This study investigated the association between osteoporosis and colorectal neoplasms (CRN). The data were obtained from the National Health Insurance Service sample cohort, which included 60,386 osteoporosis patients and 8224 controls who underwent BMD in 2002-2019. The logistic regression models included age, sex, income level, and comorbidity. Sensitivity tests were performed using the data from the National Health Screening Program. In total, 7706 (11.2%) patients were diagnosed with CRN, and the proportion was significantly higher in osteoporosis patients than in controls (11.7% vs. 8.1%). In the multivariate analysis, osteoporosis was associated with an increased risk of CRN (odds ratio (OR) = 1.91, 95% confidence interval = 1.75-2.09, p < 0.0001), which was significant for both colorectal adenomas and CRC (OR = 1.88 and 1.83, respectively). A subgroup analysis by sex revealed a significant association between osteoporosis and CRN in both women and men (OR = 2.06 and 1.66, respectively). The sensitivity tests revealed results similar to those of the original dataset. In conclusion, osteoporosis is significantly associated with CRN risk in both sexes. In high-risk patients with low BMD, appropriate screening for CRN and vitamin D supplementation are required, regardless of sex.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a disease with high prevalence and mortality. Estimated preventability for CRC is approximately 50%, indicating that altering modifiable factors, including diet and body weight, can reduce CRC risk. There is strong evidence that dietary factors including whole grains, high-fiber, red and processed meat, and alcohol can affect the risk of CRC. An alternative strategy for preventing CRC is use of a chemopreventive supplement that provides higher individual exposure to nutrients than what can be obtained from the diet. These include calcium, vitamin D, folate, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and phytochemicals. Several intervention trials have shown that these dietary chemopreventives have positive protective effects on development and progression CRC. Research on chemoprevention with phytochemicals that possess anti-inflammatory and/or, anti-oxidative properties is still in the preclinical phase. Intentional weight loss by bariatric surgery has not been effective in decreasing long-term CRC risk. Physicians should perform dietary education for patients who are at high risk of cancer for changing their dietary habits and behaviour. An increased understanding of the role of individual nutrients linked to the intestinal micro-environment and stages of carcinogenesis would facilitate the development of the best nutritional formulations for preventing CRC.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are metabolic products produced during the microbial fermentation of non-digestible fibers and play an important role in metabolic homeostasis and overall gut health. In this study, we investigated the effects of supplementation with multispecies probiotics (MSPs) containing Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Limosilactobacillus reuteri, and Levilactobacillus brevis on the gut microbiota, and fecal SCFAs and lactate levels of weaned pigs. A total of 38 pigs weaned at 4 weeks of age were fed either a basal diet or a diet supplemented with MSPs for 6 weeks. MSP administration significantly increased the fecal concentrations of lactate (2.3-fold; p < 0.01), acetate (1.8-fold; p < 0.05), and formate (1.4-fold; p < 0.05). Moreover, MSP supplementation altered the gut microbiota of the pigs by significantly increasing the population of potentially beneficial bacteria such as Olsenella, Catonella, Catenibacterium, Acidaminococcus, and Ruminococcaceae. MSP supplementation also decreased the abundance of pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia and Chlamydia. The modulation of the gut microbiota was observed to be strongly correlated with the changes in fecal SCFAs and lactate levels. Furthermore, we found changes in the functional pathways present within the gut, which supports our findings that MSP modulates the gut microbiota and SCFAs levels in pigs. The results support the potential use of MSPs to improve the gut health of animals by modulating SCFAs production.

The Dendrobium species (Orchidaceae) has been cultivated as an ornamental plant as well as used in traditional medicines. In this study, the chemical profiles of Dendrobii Herba, used as herbal medicine, Dendrobium in two different species, their hybrid, and the gamma-irradiated mutant lines of the hybrid, were systematically investigated via ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QToF MS). Among the numerous peaks detected, 17 peaks were unambiguously identified. Gigantol (1), (1R,2R)-1,7-hydroxy-2,8-methoxy-2,3-dihydrophenanthrene-4(1H)-one (2), tristin (3), (-)-syringaresinol (4), lusianthridin (5), 2,7-dihydroxy-phenanthrene-1,4-dione (6), densiflorol B (7), denthyrsinin (8), moscatilin (9), lusianthridin dimer (10), batatasin III (11), ephemeranthol A (12), thunalbene (13), dehydroorchinol (14), dendrobine (15), shihunine (16), and 1,5,7-trimethoxy-2-phenanthrenol (17), were detected in Dendrobii Herba, while 1, 2, and 16 were detected in D. candidum, 1, 11, and 16 in D. nobile, and 1, 2, and 16 in the hybrid, D. nobile × candidum. The methanol extract taken of them was also examined for cytotoxicity against FaDu human hypopharynx squamous carcinoma cells, where Dendrobii Herba showed the greatest cytotoxicity. In the untargeted metabolite analysis of 436 mutant lines of the hybrid, using UPLC-QToF MS and cytotoxicity measurements combined with multivariate analysis, two tentative flavonoids (M1 and M2) were evaluated as key markers among the analyzed metabolites, contributing to the distinction between active and inactive mutant lines.

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease overlap (ACO) recommend initial treatment using inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) plus 1 or more bronchodilators. OBJECTIVE: To clarify which therapeutic effect is better between the ICS + long-acting ß2 agonist (LABA) and ICS + LABA + long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) treatment in patients with ACO. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, 48-week, randomized, noninferiority trial. Patients with ACO were enrolled if they were treated with a moderate to high dose of ICS + LABA. In total, 303 patients were involved in the present trial, with 149 receiving ICS + LABA + LAMA. The primary end point was the time to first exacerbation. Secondary outcomes included changes in FEV1, forced vital capacity, FEV1/forced vital capacity ratio, asthma control, blood eosinophil count, and fractional exhaled nitric oxide. RESULTS: In the ICS + LABA treatment group, 29 of 154 patients (18.83%) experienced exacerbation, whereas 28 of 149 patients (18.79%) experienced exacerbation in the ICS + LABA + LAMA treatment group. The results of this noninferiority study were ultimately inconclusive (hazard ratio, 1.1; 95% CI, 0.66-1.84). However, the patients treated with the addition of LAMA showed significant improvements in FEV1 and forced vital capacity (P < .001). Asthma control did not improve in either group. CONCLUSIONS: Although this study was unable to conclude that ICS + LABA treatment is not inferior to ICS + LABA + LAMA in terms of exacerbation, it is obvious that the ICS + LABA + LAMA treatment group had improved lung function in ACO.

Hibiscus species are rich in phenolic compounds and have been traditionally used for improving human health through their bioactive activities. The present study investigated the phenolic compounds of leaf extracts from 18 different H. acetosella accessions and evaluated their biofunctional properties, focusing on antioxidant and antibacterial activity. The most abundant phenolic compound in H. acetosella was caffeic acid, with levels ranging from 14.95 to 42.93 mg/100 g. The antioxidant activity measured by the ABTS assay allowed the accessions to be classified into two groups: a high activity group with red leaf varieties (74.71-84.02%) and a relatively low activity group with green leaf varieties (57.47-65.94%). The antioxidant activity was significantly correlated with TAC (0.933), Dp3-Sam (0.932), Dp3-Glu (0.924), and Cy3-Sam (0.913) contents (p < 0.001). The H. acetosella phenolic extracts exhibited antibacterial activity against two bacteria, with zones of inhibition between 12.00 and 13.67 mm (Staphylococcus aureus), and 10.67 and 13.33 mm (Pseudomonas aeruginosa). All accessions exhibited a basal antibacterial activity level (12 mm) against the Gram-positive S. aureus, with PI500758 and PI500764 exhibiting increased antibacterial activity (13.67 mm), but they exhibited a more dynamic antibacterial activity level against the Gram-negative P. aeruginosa.

The scaly bulbs of Lilium longiflorum (Liliaceae) are used as a food ingredient and a traditional medicine in East Asia. A preliminary study revealed that treatment with 100 µg/mL of the ethyl acetate fraction of this plant material inhibited dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) to 58.99%. Phytochemical studies were conducted to identify the active ingredient, and five compounds, namely, 1 (2.9 mg, 75.8% purity at 320 nm), 2 (12.2 mg, 97.9% purity at 320 nm), 3 (3.1 mg, 66.5% purity at 320 nm), 4 (6.8 mg, 96.9% purity at 320 nm), and 5 (6.2 mg, 90.2% purity at 320 nm) were purified from 200 mg of the ethyl acetate fraction of L. longiflorum via centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) with a two-phase solvent system composed of chloroform/methanol/isopropanol/water (5:2:2:4, v/v/v/v) in an ascending mode. Their structures were identified as 1-O-p-coumaroyl-2-O-ß-glucopyranosylglycerol (regaloside D, 1), 3,6'-O-diferuloylsucrose (2), 1-O-p-coumaroyl-2-O-ß-glucopyranosyl-3-O-acetylglycerol (regaloside B, 3), 1-O-p-coumaroylglycerol (4), and 4-O-acetyl-3,6'-O-diferuloylsucrose (5), respectively, by 1H and 13C NMR and MS analysis. Compounds 2 and 5 exhibited DPP-IV inhibitory activities with IC50 values of 46.19 and 63.26 µM, respectively. Compounds 1, 3, and 4 did not show activities, indicating that biphenylpropanoids linked via the sugar moiety are more effective than phenylpropanoids with glycerol or glyceryl glucoside. This is the first report of simultaneous separation of five phenylpropanoids from L. longiflorum by CPC and evaluation of their DPP-IV inhibitory activities.

The selective α2-adrenergic receptor agonist dexmedetomidine acts as an analgesic, sedative, and anesthetic adjuvant. The most common consequence of sleep deprivation is memory impairment. We investigated whether dexmedetomidine can counteract memory impairment caused by sleep deprivation and suppress the production of inflammatory factors. For inducing sleep deprivation, adult male mice were placed inside a water cage containing 15 platforms immersed in water up to 1 cm for 7 days. One day after sleep deprivation, dexmedetomidine at the respective dosage (5, 10, and 20 µg/kg) and α2-adrenoceptor antagonist atipamezole (250 µg/kg) were intraperitoneally injected into the mice, once per day for six days. The step-down avoidance task and the Morris water maze test were performed. Western blot analysis was performed to determine the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), tyrosine kinase B (TrkB), nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB), inhibitor of κBα (IκBα), and ionized calcium binding adapter molecule I (Iba-1) in the hippocampus. Immunohistochemistry was performed for the determination of Ki-67 and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) expression in the hippocampal dentate gyrus. Dexmedetomidine ameliorated sleep deprivation-induced deterioration of short-term memory and spatial learning ability. Dexmedetomidine inhibited production of inflammatory mediators caused by sleep deprivation. Dexmedetomidine also prevented the decrease in BDNF, TrkB expression, and cell proliferation induced by sleep deprivation. Dexmedetomidine could be used to counteract the neuropathological effects of sleep deprivation.

The flowers of chrysanthemum species are used as a herbal tea and in traditional medicine. In addition, members of the genus have been selected to develop horticultural cultivars of diverse floral colors and capitulum forms. In this research, we investigated the phytochemical composition of eight gamma-irradiation mutant cultivars of Chrysanthemum morifolium and their original cultivars. The mutant chrysanthemum cultivars were generated by treatment with various doses of 60Co gamma irradiation of stem cuttings of three commercial chrysanthemum cultivars as follows: 'ARTI-Dark Chocolate' (50Gy), 'ARTI-Purple Lady' (30 Gy), and 'ARTI-Yellow Star' (50 Gy) derived from 'Noble Wine'; 'ARTI-Red Star' (50 Gy) and 'ARTI-Rising Sun' (30 Gy) from 'Pinky'; 'ARTI-Purple' (40 Gy) and 'ARTI-Queen' (30 Gy) from 'Argus'; and 'ARTI-Rollypop' (70 Gy) from 'Plaisir d'amour'. Quantitative analysis of flavonoids, phenolic acids, anthocyanins, and carotenoids in the flowers of the 12 chrysanthemum cultivars was performed using high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD-ESIMS). Essential oils from the flowers of these cultivars were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The mutant cultivars, 'ARTI-Dark Chocolate', 'ARTI-Purple Lady', 'ARTI-Purple', and 'ARTI-Queen' showed higher total amounts of flavonoid and phenolic acid compared with those of the respective original cultivars. The mutant cultivars, 'ARTI-Dark Chocolate', 'ARTI-Purple Lady' and 'ARTI-Purple', which produce purple to pink petals, contained more than two-times higher amounts of anthocyanins compared with those of their original cultivars. Of the mutant cultivars, 'ARTI-Yellow Star' in which petal color was changed to yellow, showed the greatest accumulation of carotenoids. Ninety-nine volatile compounds were detected, of which hydrocarbons and terpenoids were abundant in all cultivars analyzed. This is the first report that demonstrated the phytochemical analysis of novel chrysanthemum cultivars derived from C. morifolium hydrid using HPLC-DAD-ESIMS and GC-MS. These findings suggest that the selected mutant chrysanthemum cultivars show potential as a functional source of phytochemicals associated with the abundance of health-beneficial components, as well as good source for horticulture and pigment industries.

OBJECTIVES: Following the increased use of antibiotics, the emergence of antibiotic-resistant species in pediatric patients with otitis media has become a problem in recent years. The aim of this study was to investigate change in bacterial species, antibiotic resistance, and detection rate of highly pathogenic species, such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa according to the number of repeated ventilation tube insertion (VTI) procedures in pediatric patients diagnosed with otitis media with effusion (OME). MATERIALS & METHODS: From May 2010 to June 2018, 158 patients under 17 years of age who were admitted to the outpatient clinic of Kyung Hee Medical Center and diagnosed as OME and underwent unilateral or bilateral VTI were included in this study. Bacterial cultures were performed on aseptically collected middle ear effusion (MEF) at the time of VTI and antibiotic sensitivity tests were performed on the identified bacteria. RESULTS: Bacteria were not identified in 195 (70.1%) cultures and identified in 83 (29.9%) cultures. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) was the most frequently detected species in both the non-recurrent group and the recurrent group. MRSA detection rate was found to be significantly higher in the recurrent group than in the non-recurrent group (p = 0.029). The two groups showed no significant difference in antibiotic resistance against all antibiotics (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Staphylococcus species were detected most frequently in the MEF of pediatric OME patients, and the MRSA detection rate was higher in the recurrent group than in the non-recurrent group. There was no difference in antibiotic sensitivity between the two groups against all antibiotics, but resistance to penicillin G and cefoxitin was newly appeared in patients with repeated detection of same bacterial isolates.

BACKGROUND: Sciatic nerve injury develops from a variety of pathological causes, including traumatic injury and neuroinflammatory disorders, which are accompanied by pathological changes that have a critical impact on neuropathic pain and locomotor activity. Extracts of Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans (SSM) are used in traditional medicine for the treatment of a wide range of neuropathic diseases, including lower back pain, peripheral neuropathy, and sciatic nerve injury. Although SSM shows anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anticonvulsant activities, its diverse mechanisms of action remain unclear. Thus, the present study examined the effects of SSM in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: To estimate the anti-inflammatory effects of SSM, inflammatory conditions were induced using lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in RAW 264.7 cells, and inflammatory-related factors were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and western blotting analyses. Sciatic nerve crush injury (SNCI) was induced in rats using a surgical clip instrument. The effects of SSM in the SNCI model were evaluated in behavioral tests by calculating the sciatic functional index (SFI) and measuring thermal hyperalgesia sensitivity and by monitoring inflammatory factors expression in western blotting analyses. RESULTS: We observed the anti-inflammatory effects of SSM treatment both in vitro and in vivo. The PGE2 and NO production were suppressed by SSM. Protein analyses indicated that expression of NF-κB and degradation of IκBα were suppressed by SSM treatment. In addition, the levels of iNOS, TNF-α, IL-6, and COX-2 expression were reduced by SSM treatment in RAW 264.7 cells and in the SNCI-induced animals. In behavioral studies, SSM treatment enhanced the SFI and improved the thermal sensitivity test results. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that SSM suppresses the production of inflammatory factors via the NF-κB pathway and accelerates the morphological and functional recovery of the peripheral nervous system. Hence, SSM may be a useful therapeutic candidate for treatment of neuropathic pain diseases.

Vitamin D has the pleiotropic effects in multiple organ systems, and vitamin D deficiency was suggested to be associated with high blood pressure according to previous reports. Several interventional studies have examined the effect of vitamin D supplementation on high blood pressure patients, but the results have been inconsistent. In this article, we examined the literature that have proposed a mechanism involving vitamin D in the regulation of blood pressure and review previous observational and interventional studies that have shown the relationship between vitamin D and hypertension among various populations.

The flowers of Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat. have been used as an herbal tea and in traditional medicine, and the plant has been developed to produce horticultural cultivars of various colors and shapes. In this study, a new chrysanthemum cultivar with dark purple petals (C. morifolium cv. ARTI-Dark Chocolate; ADC) was developed by radiation-induced mutation breeding of its original cultivar with purple striped white petals (C. morifolium cv. Noble Wine, NW). The phenolic profile and antioxidant property of ADC were investigated and compared with NW and the commercially available medicinal herb, C. morifolium with yellow petals (CM), in order to find a scientific support to produce a new source of natural antioxidant. Flavonoid and phenolic acid profiles of the ethanol extracts of the three flowers were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD-ESIMS), while antioxidant properties were evaluated using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging assay. Among the tested flowers, ADC possessed the strongest antioxidant capacity and the highest phenolic contents. Recent development in the field of nanomaterials has given rise into the inquiries regarding the toxicological characteristics of the nanomaterials. While many individual nanomaterials have been screened for their toxicological effects, composites that accompany nanomaterials are not common subjects to such screening through toxicological assessment. One of the widely used composites that accompany nanomaterials is catalyst composite used to reduce air pollution, which was selected as a target composite with nanomaterials for the multifaceted toxicological assessment. As existing studies did not possess any significant data regarding such catalyst composites, this study focuses on investigating toxicological characteristics of catalyst composites from various angles in both in-vitro and in-vivo settings. Initial toxicological assessment on catalyst composites was conducted using HUVECs for cell viability assays, and subsequent in-vivo assay regarding their direct influence on living organisms was done. The zebrafish embryo and its transgenic lines were used in the in-vivo assays to obtain multifaceted analytic results. Data obtained from the in-vivo assays include blood vessel formation, mutated heart morphology, and heart functionality change. Our multifaceted toxicological assessment pointed out that chemical composites augmented with nanomaterials can too have toxicological threat as much as individual nanomaterials do and alarms us with their danger. This manuscript provides a multifaceted assessment for composites augmented with nanomaterials, of which their toxicological threats have been overlooked.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the audiologic and clinical characteristics of the tinnitus in single-sided deafness (SSD) patients and to determine whether tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) is beneficial to those patients who suffer from tinnitus with SSD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six tinnitus patients with unilateral sensorineural profound hearing loss were included in the SSD group, and 46 tinnitus patients with normal hearing were included in the normal hearing group (NH group). Tinnitus evaluation consisted of the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), and visual analog scales (VAS) were obtained at the initial interview and 6 months after TRT. The therapeutic response was analyzed and compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The subjective intensity of tinnitus and objective loudness were greater in the SSD group. According to the THI scores prior to TRT, the SSD group showed significantly higher values, except in the emotional subscale. The THI score was significantly improved after TRT in both groups. The total THI score and all the subscale scores were significantly reduced. The VAS average scores were reduced from 6.5 to 5.1 in the SSD group, without statistical significance, whereas in the NH group, the VAS average scores significantly decreased from 5.8 to 4.5 after TRT. CONCLUSION: TRT was effective in SSD patients with subjective tinnitus.

OBJECTIVE: Photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) using GreenLight and Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) is an important surgical technique for management of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). We aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of PVP using a 120 W GreenLight laser with HoLEP in a small prostate volume. METHODS: Patients who underwent PVP or HoLEP surgery for BPH at our institutions were reviewed from May 2009 to December 2014 in this retrospective study. Among them, patients with prostate volumes < 40 mL based on preoperative trans-rectal ultrasonography were included in this study. Peri-operative and post-operative parameters-such as International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), quality of life (QoL), maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax), post-void residual urine volume (PVR), and complications-were compared between the groups. RESULTS: PVP was performed in 176 patients and HoLEP in162 patients. Preoperative demographic data were similar in both groups, with the exception of PVR. Operative time and catheter duration did not show significant difference. Significant improvements compared to preoperative values were verified at the postoperative evaluation in both groups in terms of IPSS, QoL, Qmax, and PVR. Comparison of the postoperative parameters between the PVP and HoLEP groups demonstrated no significant difference, with the exception of IPSS voiding subscore at 1 month postoperatively (5.9 vs. 3.8, P< 0.001). There was no significant difference in postoperative complications between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that PVP and HoLEP are efficient and safe surgical treatment options for patients with small prostate volume.

Controlled surface wettability for oil has been intensively studied to remove industrial oil waste or oil spill pollution from seas or rivers. In particular, external stimuli-induced special wetting materials, such as photo-responsive TiO2, have attracted considerable attention for oil-water separation. In this study, a novel method is reported to fabricate a nano-sponge which is composed of hydrophobic hydrocarbon and hydrophilic TiO2 nanoparticles for oil absorption or desorption that are responsive to UV irradiation. The hydrocarbon in the nano-sponge could selectively absorb oil from water, whereas the absorbed oil is released into the water by TiO2 in response to UV irradiation. The nano-sponge functionalized porous polydimethylsiloxane released more than 98% of the absorbed crude oil with UV irradiation and air-bubbling. It could be continuously reused while maintaining a high absorption capacity and desorption efficiency without incurring secondary air or water pollution. This smart oil absorption/desorption methodology with excellent selectivity and recyclability with almost perfect removal of absorbed oil can be applied for oil-water separation, oil spill cleanup and reuse of spilled oil.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the relationship between chronic prostatic inflammation and prostatic calculi, and clinical parameters of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was based on 225 patients who underwent transurethral resection of the prostate for BPH. Chronic inflammation was graded as 0 (n = 44), I (n = 54), II (n = 88) or III (n = 39) according to severity. Prostatic calculi were classified into types A (n = 66), B (n = 44), M (n = 77) and N (n = 38). The relationship between inflammation and calculus type was analyzed, and clinical parameters of BPH were compared for each group. RESULTS: There was no correlation between severity of inflammation and calculus type. Prostatic volume increased with the severity of inflammation and showed significant differences between G2, G3 and G0. The International Prostate Symptom Score also increased with increasing inflammation. There was no significant difference between each clinical parameter according to calculus type. CONCLUSIONS: Prostatic calculi had no significant association with chronic inflammation and clinical parameters of BPH. Chronic inflammation was associated with the volume of the prostate and storage symptoms; thus, it is not only presumed to be related to the progression of BPH, but may also be one of the causes of lower urinary tract symptoms.

Empirical antibiotic therapy is the preferred primary treatment modality for chronic bacterial prostatitis (CBP). However, this method of treatment has a low success rate and long-term therapy may result in complications and the appearance of resistant strains. Therefore a new alternative method for the prevention of CBP is necessary. There are several reports that ginsenoid has a preventive effect on urinary tract infection (UTI). To evaluate the preventive effect of ginsenoid on CBP compared to conventional antibiotics, we carried out an experiment in a rat model of the disease. Four groups of adult male Wistar rats were treated with the following medications: (1) control (no medication), (2) ciprofloxacin, (3) ginsenoid, and (4) ciprofloxacin/ginsenoid. All medications were given for 4 weeks, and then we created a CBP model in the animals by injecting an Escherichia coli Z17 (O2:K1;H(-)) suspension into the prostatic urethra. After 4 weeks, results of microbiological cultures of prostate and urine samples, as well as histological findings of the prostate in each group were analyzed. The microbiological cultures of the prostate samples demonstrated reduced bacterial growth in all experimental groups compared with the control group. Histopathological examination showed a significantly decreased rate of infiltration of inflammatory cells into prostatic tissue and decreased interstitial fibrosis in the ginsenoid group compared with the control group. Inhibition of prostate infection was greater in the group receiving both ginsenoid and antibiotic than in the single-medication groups. Although the findings of this study suggest a preventive effect of ginsenoid, preventive methods for CBP are still controversial.
