RESUMEN

Water chestnut is a floating leaf plant native to Asia and Europe. Its fruit has long been used as an edible and herbal medicine. Water chestnut contains many polyphenols and its consumption can prevent lifestyle-related diseases because it has a suppressive effect on postprandial blood glucose elevation; however, its suitability as a cosmetic material is unknown. Therefore, this study aimed at investigating the antiaging effect of polyphenols contained in the husk of the devil water chestnut (Trapa natans). Six hydrolyzable polyphenols-1,6-di-O-galloyl-ß-d-glucopyranose, 1,2,6-tri-O-galloyl-ß-d-glucopyranose, 1,6-di-O-galloyl-2,3-O-(S)-hexahydroxydiphenoyl-ß-d-glucopyranose (nobotanin D), eugeniin, 1,2,3,6-tetra-O-galloyl-ß-d-glucopyranose, and trapain-were collected and isolated from the water chestnut husk. These polyphenols showed high antioxidant and antiglycation activities. In addition, inhibitory activities against hyaluronidase, elastase, and collagenase were observed. Especially, eugeniin and trapain, which have many gallic acids and a hexahydroxy-biphenyl group, showed high inhibitory activities. Thus, the polyphenols in water chestnut are beneficial for antiaging effects.

OBJECTIVES: Selenoprotein P (SeP) is a selenium (Se) supply protein, which is an antioxidant micronutrient considered to be vital for human health. The aim of this study was to assess the serum selenium status in patients with silicosis. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case-control study where serum samples from a total of 78 patients (males with a median age of 73.5 years old) with silicosis and 20 healthy controls (males with a median age of 72.5 years old) were assayed for Se and SeP. They underwent medical and job history taking, lung function testing, and chest radiography examinations. Levels of serum Se were measured using electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotomerty, while levels of SeP were assessed with sandwich Enzyme Immunoassay. Spearman's rank correlation test was carried out to evaluate the relationship between Se and SeP. The Mann-Whitney test was used to evaluate differences in serum Se and SeP between study groups. RESULTS: The median serum Se and SeP concentrations were significantly lower in cases (74.0 µg/l and 4.2mg/l, respectively) compared with controls (116.0 µg/l and 5.8 mg/l, respectively). In both cases and controls, serum Se was positively correlated with serum SeP (rho=0.781, p<0.001 and rho=0.768, p<0.001, respectively). Serum Se and SeP levels were significantly lower in patients classified in category four compared with those who were classified in category two or three. CONCLUSIONS: Serum Se and SeP concentrations were found to be at inadequate levels in patients with silicosis, and decreased significantly with the severity of the disease.

The aim of this work was to investigate the antioxidant property of honeybee products and their constituents using an ESR method. Antioxidative activity was evaluated as the scavenging activity of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. The DPPH radical scavenging activities, in descending order, were: ethanol extract of Chinese red propolis>ethanol extract of Brazilian green propolis>water extract of Brazilian green propolis>ethanol extract of bee pollen. Many natural compounds are included in Brazilian green propolis, such as caffeoylquinic acid derivatives [3,4-di-caffeoylquinic acid (3,4-CQA), 3,5-di-caffeoylquinic acid (3,5-CQA), and chlorogenic acid (ChA)] and cinnamic acid derivatives [artepillin C, baccharin, rho-coumaric acid, and drupanin]. Caffeoylquinic acid derivatives exhibited DPPH radical scavenging activity as strong as that of ascorbic acid and trolox. Among the cinnamic acid derivatives, artepillin C exhibited relatively strong DPPH radical scavenging activity. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), a constituent of Chinese red propolis, exhibited potent DPPH radical scavenging activity, stronger than that of ascorbic acid and trolox. Caffeic acid, a metabolite of caffeoylquinic acid, exhibited powerful DPPH radical scavenging activity, while quinic acid, another metabolite of caffeoylquinic acid, had no such activity. Both Brazilian and Chinese propolis and their constituents (caffeoylquinic acid derivatives and CAPE) therefore appear to be powerful scavengers of DPPH radical, and the effects may be partly dependent on the nature of their caffeoyl groups.
