RESUMEN

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression is associated with dysfunctional mitochondria and bioenergetics impairment. However, no data about the relationship between mitochondrial supercomplexes (hmwSC) formation and ATP production rates in HCC are available. Our group has developed an adenosine derivative, IFC-305, which improves mitochondrial function, and it has been proposed as a therapeutic candidate for HCC. We aimed to determine the role of IFC-305 on both mitochondrial structure and bioenergetics in a sequential cirrhosis-HCC model in rats. Our results showed that IFC-305 administration decreased the number and size of liver tumors, reduced the expression of tumoral markers, and reestablished the typical architecture of the hepatic parenchyma. The livers of treated rats showed a reduction of mitochondria number, recovery of the mtDNA/nDNA ratio, and mitochondrial length. Also, IFC-305 increased cardiolipin and phosphatidylcholine levels and promoted hmwSC reorganization with changes in the expression levels of hmwSC assembly-related genes. IFC-305 in HCC modified the expression of several genes encoding elements of electron transport chain complexes and increased the ATP levels by recovering the complex I, III, and V activity. We propose that IFC-305 restores the mitochondrial bioenergetics in HCC by normalizing the quantity, morphology, and function of mitochondria, possibly as part of its hepatic restorative effect.

OBJECTIVES: (1) To assess the ability to generate both kinesthetic and visual motor imagery in participants with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), compared with asymptomatic participants. (2) To assess the influence of psychophysiological and functional variables in the motor imagery process. METHODS: Twenty patients with unilateral CTS and 18 pain-free individuals were recruited. An observational case-control study with a nonprobability sample was conducted to assess visual and kinesthetic movement imagery ability and psychophysiological variables in patients with CTS compared with asymptomatic participants in a control group. The trial was conducted in accordance with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology statement. RESULTS: CTS patients have more difficulties in generating visual motor images compared with asymptomatic individuals ( t =-2.099; P <0.05; d=0.70). They need more time to complete the mental tasks (visual t =-2.424; P <0.05 and kinesthetic t =-2.200; P <0.05). A negative correlation was found between the ability to imagine and functional deficits ( r =-0.569; P =0.021) for the kinesthetic subscale and temporal summation ( r =-0.515; P <0.5). A positive correlation was found between pain pressure threshold homolateral (homolateral) and time to generate the visual mental images ( r =0.537; P <0.05). DISCUSSION: CTS patients have greater difficulty generating motor images than asymptomatic individuals. Patients also spend more time during mental tasks. CTS patients present a relationship between temporal summation and the capacity to generate kinesthetic images. In addition, the CST patients presented a correlation between chronometry mental tasking and mechanical hyperalgesia.

CONTEXT: Qing Cuo Formula (QCF) is a traditional Chinese medicine for treating acne, but its active compounds and molecular mechanisms are unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the material basis and molecular mechanism of QCF. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In vivo experiments were conducted on 60 male golden hamsters with damp-heat acne, with a blank group, a spironolactone group and 3 QCF administration groups (given high, medium and low doses) over a 30-day period. Serum androgen and inflammatory cytokine levels were tested by ELISA. In vitro, chemical compositions of QCF were investigated by UPLC-LTQ-Orbitrap-MS. Network pharmacology approaches were used to analyse the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and QCF active compounds-intersection targets-acne network. GO enrichment and KEGG pathway analysis was conducted subsequently. RESULTS: Low-dose QCF group (11.4 g/kg/day) showed significantly reduced levels of serum T (4.94 ± 0.36; 5.51 ± 0.36 ng/mL), DHT (6.67 ± 0.61; 8.09 ± 0.59 nmol/L), E2 (209.01 ± 20.92; 237.08 ± 13.94 pg/mL), IL-1α (36.84 ± 3.23; 44.07 ± 4.00 pg/mL) and FFA (128.32 ± 10.94; 148.00 ± 12.12 µmol/L) compared to the blank group (p < 0.05). In vitro experiments identified 75 compounds in QCF decoction, with 27 active compounds absorbed in serum. Network pharmacology identified 6 active components connecting 17 targets. GO enrichment and KEGG pathway analysis indicated that QCF's anti-acne targets mainly regulate extracellular matrix function, inflammatory processes, immune response and endocrine function. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence of the molecular mechanism and material basis of QCF in treating androgen-related damp-heat acne, paving the way for further research on its potential in treating other conditions related to damp-heat constitution.

Introduction: Introduction: palliative care has been linked to the management of patients without a curative option. The detection of malnutrition allows establishing nutritional intervention strategies to make an adequate use of resources and contribute to support measures. Objective: to describe changes in nutritional status and their impact on survival in patients with cancer disease under palliative care. Methods: descriptive observational study of a retrospective cohort. The patients had stage IV cancer disease, Karnofsky index ≤70 and a survival prognosis <6 months. A complete nutritional assessment was carried out and they were followed for one year. The nutritional status and its characteristics, the presence of cachexia and the median survival at one year were described. Results: of 256 patients at the beginning of the follow-up, 60,9 % had some degree of malnutrition, which increased to 71,9 % at the end of the follow-up. There was an increase in patients with a thin body mass index (BMI) (+7.6%, p = 0.04) and a decrease in patients with excess weight (overweight -3.6%, p = 0, 24; and obesity -2.6%, p = 0.17). Overall survival at 1 year was 60 % (95% CI: 53-65). Conclusion: malnutrition was frequent in patients under palliative care (60,9 %) and increased throughout the follow-up. Differences were observed between the complete nutritional diagnosis and BMI, which can lead to a misclassification of the diagnosis and a decrease in the effectiveness of cancer treatment.


Introducción: Introducción: los cuidados paliativos han estado ligados al manejo de pacientes sin opción curativa. La detección de la desnutrición permite establecer estrategias de intervención nutricional que promueva el adecuado uso de los recursos y aporte a las medidas de apoyo en el tratamiento médico. Objetivo: describir cambios en el estado nutricional y su impacto sobre la supervivencia en pacientes con enfermedad oncológica bajo cuidado paliativo. Métodos: cohorte observacional retrospectiva. Los pacientes presentaban enfermedad oncológica estadio IV, índice de Karnofsky ≤70 y un pronóstico de supervivencia <6 meses. Se realizó evaluación nutricional por criterios GLIM y seguimiento por un año. Se identificó el estado nutricional y se describieron sus características, la presencia de los estadios de caquexia y la mediana de supervivencia a un año. Resultados: de 256 pacientes al inicio de la intervención, el 84,0 % presentaba algún grado de desnutrición, ésta cifra incrementó a 87,0 % al finalizar el seguimiento. Se observó un aumento en el número de pacientes con índice de masa corporal (IMC) delgado (+7,6 %, p=0,04) y una disminución en el número de pacientes con exceso de peso (sobrepeso -3,6 %, p=0,24; y obesidad -2,6 %, p=0,17). La supervivencia global a 1 año fue del 60 % (IC95%:53-66). Conclusión: la desnutrición fue muy frecuente en pacientes bajo cuidado paliativo y aumentó a lo largo del seguimiento. Se observaron diferencias entre el diagnóstico nutricional y el IMC, lo cual puede conllevar a una mala clasificación del diagnóstico y a una disminución en la efectividad del tratamiento oncológico.

Netherton syndrome (NS) is a rare genodermatosis with an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance caused by pathogenic variants in the SPINK5 gene. It is characterized by a triad consisting of atopic diathesis, ichthyosis linearis circumflexa, and hair shaft abnormalities. Ichthyosis linearis circumflexa can be confused with atopic dermatitis leading to a delayed diagnosis. Furthermore, difficulty in making the differential diagnosis with other atopiform, erythrodermic, and ichthyosiform entities that exhibit hair shaft abnormalities represent a challenge. Trichoscopy is an accessible and noninvasive auxiliary diagnostic tool in these cases; the hair shaft abnormalities found in NS are bamboo, golf tee, and matchstick hairs. Identification of a pathogenic variant in the SPINK5 gene through genetic testing is necessary to confirm the diagnosis. Multiple treatment options are available including topical therapy with emollients, corticosteroids, calcineurin inhibitors, antiseptics, and narrowband UVB phototherapy. Systemic treatments comprehend intravenous immunoglobulins, and advances in the understanding of the pathophysiology of NS have led to more directed therapies with biologics such as infliximab, ixekizumab, secukinumab, ustekinumab, and dupilumab. Treatments currently under investigation include inhibitors of kallikrein 5, cathelicidins, drugs activating the transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-like 2, and gene therapy using autologous keratinocytes induced with a lentiviral vector encoding SPINK5.

There is evidence that diet and nutrition are modifiable risk factors for several cancers, but associations may be flawed due to inherent biases. Nutritional epidemiology studies have largely relied on a single assessment of diet using food frequency questionnaires. We conduct an umbrella review of meta-analyses of observational studies to evaluate the strength and validity of the evidence for the association between food/nutrient intake and risk of developing or dying from 11 primary cancers. It is estimated that only few single food/nutrient and cancer associations are supported by strong or highly suggestive meta-analytic evidence, and future similar research is unlikely to change this evidence. Alcohol consumption is positively associated with risk of postmenopausal breast, colorectal, esophageal, head & neck and liver cancer. Consumption of dairy products, milk, calcium and wholegrains are inversely associated with colorectal cancer risk. Coffee consumption is inversely associated with risk of liver cancer and skin basal cell carcinoma.

Vitiligo is a multifactorial disease characterized by the loss of skin pigment, which results in achromic macules and patches. There are currently several medical treatments available, which aim to arrest progression and induce skin repigmentation. These treatments alone or combined have exhibited varying degrees of pigmentation, and the majority are safe and effective. All therapies for vitiligo are limited, and no known treatment can consistently produce repigmentation in all patients. Individualized treatment is appropriate according to the location, clinical presentation and the presence of disease activity. The present review summarizes the medical treatments available for vitiligo: Systemic and topic pharmacological therapies, physical and depigmentation treatments. Several treatments are still underway and have not yet been approved. However, due to the promising preliminary results, these are also mentioned in the present review.

BACKGROUND: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) defined constitution as a health statue or physical fitness that determines individual susceptibility to diseases. Yin deficiency constitution (YinDC) is a type of constitution closely related to aging. Previous studies found that the characteristic genes of YinDC are part of the inflammatory aging signaling pathways (e.g., NF-kappa B). Therefore, the aim of the study was to further reveal the dysregulation of genes associated with inflammatory aging in YinDC women. METHODS: This study adopted the industrial standard of constitutional judgment, and screened YinDC (n = 30) and Balanced constitution (BC) (n = 30) from women between the ages of 35 to 49, a range categorized as the degenerating period by TCM. Five genes CCL4, BCL2A1, NFKBIA, TAK1, and IL-8 were analyzed by qRT-PCR. RESULTS: Logistical regression revealed the correlation between body constitution and the expression of the five genes: the expression of NFKBIA and CCL4 mRNA was significantly up-regulated, whereas the expression of BCL2A1 mRNA was significantly down-regulated in YinDC (P < 0.05). Age or weight, when included in the model, did not affected the correlations. CONCLUSION: Increased mRNA expression of CCL4 and NFKBIA and decreased mRNA expression of BCL2A1 may be the molecular basis of premature aging of YinDC women. These results provide a mechanistic basis for early conditioning of YinDC, anti-aging, and the prevention of aging-related diseases.

BACKGROUND: The literature on associations of circulating concentrations of minerals and vitamins with risk of colorectal cancer is limited and inconsistent. Evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to support the efficacy of dietary modification or nutrient supplementation for colorectal cancer prevention is also limited. OBJECTIVES: To complement observational and RCT findings, we investigated associations of genetically predicted concentrations of 11 micronutrients (ß-carotene, calcium, copper, folate, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12, and zinc) with colorectal cancer risk using Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS: Two-sample MR was conducted using 58,221 individuals with colorectal cancer and 67,694 controls from the Genetics and Epidemiology of Colorectal Cancer Consortium, Colorectal Cancer Transdisciplinary Study, and Colon Cancer Family Registry. Inverse variance-weighted MR analyses were performed with sensitivity analyses to assess the impact of potential violations of MR assumptions. RESULTS: Nominally significant associations were noted for genetically predicted iron concentration and higher risk of colon cancer [ORs per SD (ORSD): 1.08; 95% CI: 1.00, 1.17; P value = 0.05] and similarly for proximal colon cancer, and for vitamin B-12 concentration and higher risk of colorectal cancer (ORSD: 1.12; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.21; P value = 0.01) and similarly for colon cancer. A nominally significant association was also noted for genetically predicted selenium concentration and lower risk of colon cancer (ORSD: 0.98; 95% CI: 0.96, 1.00; P value = 0.05) and similarly for distal colon cancer. These associations were robust to sensitivity analyses. Nominally significant inverse associations were observed for zinc and risk of colorectal and distal colon cancers, but sensitivity analyses could not be performed. None of these findings survived correction for multiple testing. Genetically predicted concentrations of ß-carotene, calcium, copper, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamin B-6 were not associated with disease risk. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest possible causal associations of circulating iron and vitamin B-12 (positively) and selenium (inversely) with risk of colon cancer.

Historically hot and cold theories have been essential for the constitution and practice of Latin American and Caribbean traditional health systems. Nonetheless, the scarcity and dispersion of the available information impedes the recognition of the relevance and intercultural applicability of these medicines, both in the clinical, academic, and political settings. For these reasons, the aim of this narrative review is to describe hot and cold theories in the conformation and clinical practice of Latin American and Caribbean medical systems. Hot and cold classifications apply to the traditional understanding of health, the body, its physiology, and disease, which therapeutic and preventive approaches are based on foods, habits, and medicinal plants of the opposite cold or hot category. There are recognizable similarities between hot and cold theories in Latin American and Caribbean medicines and in other medical cultures. The growing scientific research and evidence contributes to re-signify the clinical applicability of Latin American and Caribbean traditional medicines. Further research about hot and cold theories in Latin American and Caribbean medicines is strongly recommended, to optimize its integration with biomedicine in an equitable intercultural context.

Pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) is a drought-tolerant species grown under the semiarid conditions of the Mediterranean basin. For this reason, it is essential to make an exhaustive quantification of yield and quality benefits of the kernels because the regulated deficit irrigation will allow significant water savings with a minimum impact on yield while improving kernel quality. The goal of this scientific work was to study the influence of the rootstock, water deficit during pit hardening, and kernel roasting on pistachio (P. vera, cv. Kerman) fruit yield, fruit size, and kernel content of fatty acids phytoprostanes (PhytoPs) and phytofurans (PhytoFs) for the first time. Water stress during pit hardening did not affect the pistachio yield. The kernel cultivar showed a lower oleic acid and a higher linoleic acid contents than other cultivars. Kernels from plants grafted on the studied rootstocks showed very interesting characteristics. P. integerrima led to the highest percentage of monounsaturated fatty acids. Regarding the plant oxylipins, P. terebinthus led to the highest contents of PhytoPs and PhytoFs (1260 ng/100 g and 16.2 ng/100 g, respectively). In addition, nuts from trees cultivated under intermediate water deficit during pit hardening showed increased contents of the 9-series F1-phytoprostanes and ent-16(RS)-9-epi-ST-Δ14-10-phytofuran. However, roasting of pistachios led to PhytoP degradation. Therefore, plant cultivar, deficit irrigation, rootstock, and roasting must be considered to enhance biosynthesis of these secondary metabolites. New tools using agricultural strategies to produce hydroSOS pistachios have been opened thanks to the biological properties of these prostaglandin-like compounds linking agriculture, nutrition, and food science technology for further research initiatives.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) continues to show effectiveness in the treatment of several diseases and benefits such as fibroblast proliferation, capillary angiogenesis, and decreasing edema, especially in hemorrhagic cystitis (HC). We report a case of a 15-year-old male with chronic myelogenous leukemia status posthaploidentical stem cell transport with BK virus in the United States to be treated by HBOT. The patient received a total of 30 HBOT treatments for 90 minutes at 2 ATA. After HBOT treatments, patient showed signs of improvements such as cessation of hemorrhage cystitis. The findings of this case support and shows that there is growing evidence for the use of HBOT as adjunctive therapy for patients with BK virus associated with HC after stem cell transplantation.

Colostrum is the first product secreted by the mammary gland to transfer immunity to the newborn, especially through immunoglobulins (Ig) G. Melatonin is an immunomodulatory factor and there is evidence that it has a direct effect on IgG production. To evaluate the effects of melatonin treatment during pregnancy, litter size and offspring sex on colostrum quality, sixty pregnant Rasa Aragonesa ewes were divided into three groups: one group received a melatonin implant at the third month of pregnancy (3M, n = 13), another group at the fourth month (4M, n = 18) and the remaining ewes were not implanted (Control, C, n = 29). Immediately after lambing, a sample of colostrum was collected and IgG, crude protein and fat content analysed. Timing of melatonin implantation (p < .001), and offspring sex (p < .01) had a significant effect on IgG concentration. Colostrum of treated ewes had a higher mean (±SEM) IgG concentration than that of the control ewes (55.54 ± 3.09 and 49.50 ± 4.36 mg/ml, respectively; p < .05), mainly because the concentration in the 4M group was significantly (p < .001) higher than it was in the other groups. The relationship between lamb sex and IgG (p < .01) and %CP (p < .05) was evident in singletons (ewes with a male lamb: 54.57 ± 5.37 mg IgG/ml, 15.42 ± 0.82%CP; ewes with a female lamb: 34.66 ± 4.30 mg/ml, 13.18 ± 0.73%CP). The presence of a female in the litter was associated with significantly (p < .01) lower colostrum IgG levels (litters with at least one female: 49.33 ± 3.42 mg/ml; litters with no females: 58.24 ± 4.00 mg/ml). Among 4M ewes, female foetuses had significantly (p < .01) lower IgG levels whether they carried singletons or multiple lambs. In conclusion, treatment with melatonin implants at the fourth month of pregnancy resulted in a higher colostrum quality based on IgG concentration.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of increasing spinal cord perfusion pressure (SCPP) on sensory evoked potentials (SEPs) and injury site metabolism in patients with severe traumatic spinal cord injury TSCI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 12 TSCI patients we placed a pressure probe, a microdialysis catheter and a strip electrode with 8 contacts on the surface of the injured cord. We monitored SCPP, lactate-to-pyruvate ratio (LPR) and SEPs (after median or posterior tibial nerve stimulation). RESULTS: Increase in SCPP by ~20 mmHg produced a heterogeneous response in SEPs and injury site metabolism. In some patients, SEP amplitudes increased and the LPR decreased indicating improved tissue metab olism. In others, SEP amplitudes decreased and the LPR increased indicating more impaired metabolism. Compared with patients who did not improve at follow-up, those who improved had significantly more electrode contacts with SEP amplitude increase in response to increasing SCPP. CONCLUSIONS: Increasing SCPP after acute, severe TSCI may be beneficial (if associated with increase in SEP amplitude) or detrimental (if associated with decrease in SEP amplitude). Our findings support individualized management of patients with acute, severe TSCI guided by monitoring from the injury site rather than applying universal blood pressure targets as is current clinical practice.

RESUMEN

El estudio sobre el efecto de los medicamentos en el estado de salud de las personas es amplio y necesario. En salud mental, el estado de salud percibido puede ser determinante para el tratamiento de algunas afecciones. El caso de la depresión es uno de los ejemplos en los que mejorar el estado de salud percibido puede incidir positivamente en el tratamiento. En este artículo se ha realizado un análisis de algunos indicadores relevantes obtenidos en la encuesta española de salud de 2017, con el objetivo de contrastar el efecto sobre el estado de salud percibido de algunas variables que se consideran fundamentales, tales como haber padecido depresión, haberse sometido a un tratamiento con homeopatía o antidepresivos, el nivel de estudios, la edad o la nacionalidad. Es conveniente señalar que los coeficientes de los sujetos que han tomado antidepresivos y homeopatía son próximos entre sí para los estados de salud bueno o muy bueno, algo superior en el caso de los antidepresivos, lo cual se puede interpretar como que ambos tratamientos generan una mejor salud percibida pudiendo optar por cualquiera de ellos pero reduciendo los efectos adversos en el caso de la homeopatía. Por otra parte, cabe destacar que, para el caso de salud percibida muy mala, el uso de homeopatía no empeora ese estado mientras que los antidepresivos sí, lo que confirma esos menores efectos adversos generados por la homeopatía


The study about the effect of medicine on perceived health is wide and necessary. In mental health issues, perceived health could act as a determinant. In case of depression, a better perceived health could help in the medical treatment. In this article, some relevant variables from the Spanish health survey of 2017 have been analyzed, with the aim of contrasting the effect of some essential variables on the perceived health such as the use of homeopathy and antidepressants, nationality, age, or education level. This article shows positive and significant results for using both, homeopathy and antidepressants, in order to get a good or a very good perceived health. Both treatments are useful, but homeopathy has the advantage of having no side effects. Moreover, for the very bad perceived health status, the use of homeopathy does not get a worse perceived health

PURPOSE: Active surveillance is increasingly used as a management strategy for localized prostate cancer. Coffee intake has been associated with a lower prostate cancer incidence. We assessed whether coffee was associated with disease progression in men on active surveillance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 411 patients with newly diagnosed Gleason score 6 or 7 prostate cancer were enrolled on a prospective active surveillance protocol for at least 6 months and completed a baseline dietary assessment. The active surveillance protocol included a biennial monitoring regimen with disease progression defined as an increase in the Gleason score. Cox proportional hazards models were used to evaluate associations of coffee intake with progression-free survival. We also evaluated patient genotype in the caffeine metabolism related single nucleotide polymorphism rs762551. RESULTS: Median followup was 36 months (range 6 to 126) and the Gleason score progressed in 76 of the 411 patients (18.5%). Compared to 0 cups per day, in the multivariable model adjusting for prostate specific antigen, patient age and tumor length, less than 1 cup (HR 0.85, 95% CI 0.40-1.71), 1 to 1.9 cups (HR 0.64, 95% CI 0.29-1.43), 2 to 3.9 cups (HR 0.71, 95% CI 0.35-1.47) and 4 cups or more (HR 1.67, 95% CI 0.81-3.45) were not significantly associated with progression-free survival (p for nonlinearity = 0.01). Patients with low/moderate coffee intake and the AA fast caffeine metabolizer genotype were less likely to experience grade progression than nonconsumers (HR 0.36, 95% CI 0.15-0.88, p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: Low to moderate coffee intake appears safe in men on active surveillance of localized prostate cancer. Further work is needed to determine whether high consumption is associated with shorter progression-free survival in sensitive groups.

The epidemiological evidence regarding the association of coffee and tea consumption with prostate cancer risk is inconclusive, and few cohort studies have assessed these associations by disease stage and grade. We examined the associations of coffee (total, caffeinated and decaffeinated) and tea intake with prostate cancer risk in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition. Among 142,196 men, 7,036 incident prostate cancer cases were diagnosed over 14 years of follow-up. Data on coffee and tea consumption were collected through validated country-specific food questionnaires at baseline. We used Cox proportional hazards regression models to compute hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Models were stratified by center and age, and adjusted for anthropometric, lifestyle and dietary factors. Median coffee and tea intake were 375 and 106 mL/day, respectively, but large variations existed by country. Comparing the highest (median of 855 mL/day) versus lowest (median of 103 mL/day) consumers of coffee and tea (450 vs. 12 mL/day) the HRs were 1.02 (95% CI, 0.94-1.09) and 0.98 (95% CI, 0.90-1.07) for risk of total prostate cancer and 0.97 (95% CI, 0.79-1.21) and 0.89 (95% CI, 0.70-1.13) for risk of fatal disease, respectively. No evidence of association was seen for consumption of total, caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee or tea and risk of total prostate cancer or cancer by stage, grade or fatality in this large cohort. Further investigations are needed to clarify whether an association exists by different preparations or by concentrations and constituents of these beverages.

The current water scarcity forces farmers to adopt new irrigation strategies to save water without jeopardizing the fruit yield and quality. In this study, the influence of 3 regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) treatments and 3 rootstocks on the functional quality of pistachios were studied. The functional parameters studied included, polyphenols, triterpenoids, and inhibition of α-amylase. The results showed that P. terebinthus and P. atlantica rootstocks led to pistachio kernels with higher contents of polyphenols and triterpenoids (mainly betulinic acid with 111 and 102 µg g-1, respectively) than pistachios obtained using P. integerrima rootstock (81 µg g-1). On the other hand, the use of moderate RDI (T1 treatment) increased the total content of polyphenols (∼10%), quercetin-O-galloyl-hexoside (∼15%), keampferol-3-O-glucoside (∼19%), and polymeric procyanidins (∼20%), as compared to the control trees, resulting in pistachios with a better functional profile, lower economic cost and with a lesser environmental impact.

BACKGROUND: The traditional ecological knowledge of land of the Ch'ol originary people from southeast Mexico forms part of their cultural identity; it is local and holistic and implies an integrated physical and spiritual worldview that contributes to improve their living conditions. We analyzed the nomenclature for soil classification used in the Mexican state of Tabasco by the Ch'ol farmers with the objective of contributing to the knowledge of the Maya soil classification. METHODS: A map of the study area was generated from the digital database of parcels in the ejido Oxolotán in the municipality of Tacotalpa, to which a geopedological map was overlaid in order to obtain modeled topographic profiles (Zavala-Cruz et al., Ecosistemas y Recursos Agropecuarios 3:161-171, 2016). In each modeled profile, a soil profile was made and classified according to IUSS Working Group WRB (181, 2014) in order to generate a map of soil groups, which was used to survey the study area with the participation of 245 local Ch'ol farmers for establishing an ethnopedological soil classification (Ortiz et al.: 62, 1990). In addition, we organized a participatory workshop with 35 people to know details of the names of the soils and their indicators of fertility and workability, from which we selected 15 participants for field trips and description of soil profiles. RESULTS: The color, texture, and stoniness are attributes important in the Ch'ol nomenclature, although the names do not completely reflect the visible characteristic of the soil surface. On the other hand, the mere presence of stones is sufficient to name a land class, while according to IUSS Working Group WRB (181, 2014), a certain amount and distribution of stones in the soil profiles is necessary to be taken into consideration in the name. Perception of soil quality by local farmers considers the compaction or hardness of the cultivable soil layer, because of which black or sandy soils are perceived as better for cultivation of banana, or as secondary vegetation in fallow. Red, yellow, or brown soils are seen as of less quality and are only used for establishing grasslands, while maize is cultivated in all soil classes. CONCLUSIONS: Farmers provided the Ch'ol nomenclature, perceived problems, and uses of each class of soil. Translation of Ch'ol soil names and comparison with descriptions of soil profiles revealed that the Ch'ol soil nomenclature takes into account the soil profile, given it is based on characteristics of both surface and subsurface horizons including color of soil matrix and mottles, stoniness, texture, and vegetation.

Coffee intake is suggested to have a positive impact on chronic diseases, yet its role in urological diseases such as erectile dysfunction (ED) remains unclear. We investigated the association of coffee intake with incidence of ED by conducting the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, a prospective analysis of 21,403 men aged 40-75 years old. Total, regular, and decaffeinated coffee intakes were self-reported on food frequency questionnaires. ED was assessed by mean values of questionnaires in 2000, 2004 and 2008. Multivariable adjusted Cox proportional hazards models were used to compute hazard ratios for patients with incident ED (n = 7,298). No significant differences were identified for patients with incident ED after comparing highest (≥4 cups/day) with lowest (0 cups/day) categories of total (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.00, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.90, 1.11) and regular coffee intakes (HR = 1.00, 95% CI: 0.89, 1.13). When comparing the highest category with lowest category of decaffeinated coffee intake, we found a 37% increased risk of ED (HR = 1.37, 95% CI: 1.08, 1.73), with a significant trend (P trend = 0.02). Stratified analyses also showed an association among current smokers (P trend = 0.005). Overall, long-term coffee intake was not associated with risk of ED in a prospective cohort study.
