RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The current study is designed to evaluate and compare the histological changes in the surgical samples of prostate taken from patients undergoing transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) for benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) with different sizes. METHODS: Prostate surgical tissue samples were obtained from BPH patients undergoing TURP after taking informed consent. Ultrasound measure of prostatic weight and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels were obtained from the patients along with other clinical and demographic details. Tissue samples were fixed, processed, sectioned and stained with hematoxylin and eosin and Masson's trichrome to look for histological features, specifically smooth muscle proliferation. Immunohistochemical expression of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2 was recorded to assess the calcification potential. RESULTS: Fifty-nine surgical samples were obtained from the patients of age range 50-90 years and body mass index (BMI) 15.6-33.3 kg/m2 . The range of ultrasound measures of prostate weight was 20-137 g with PSA ranged 1.03-93.3 ng/mL. Patients with small-sized prostate had significant severe smooth muscle proliferation (P < .001). Prostate size/weight had significant positive association with BMI (P < 0.001, r = 0.543) and negative association with BMP-2 (P < 0.001, r = -0.654). Samples with severe smooth muscle proliferation were with increased BMP-2 expression (P < .001) and higher levels of PSA levels (P = 0.004). BMP-2 expression revealed positive significant association with PSA (P < .001, r = 0.432). CONCLUSION: From this study we conclude that BPH patients with small-sized glands and high PSA levels have increased smooth muscle proliferation and calcification potential causing the symptoms of lower urinary tract symptoms in these patients.

CONTEXT: The prevalence of overweight and obesity and associated comorbidities has progressively risen. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, and turmeric aqueous extract, a concentrated form, have been reported to have beneficial effects in treatment of cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors. However, turmeric has not been studied in its natural form. OBJECTIVE: The present study planned to evaluate the beneficial effects of turmeric in its natural form on obesity-related, cardiovascular-disease risk factors in overweight or obese females. DESIGN: The study used a pre-post, single-arm design. SETTING: The study took place in the Department of Physiology at Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University (Dammam, Saudi Arabia). PARTICIPANTS: The participants were 36 young female students at the university, with a body mass index ≥ 23 kg/m2. INTERVENTION: Participants received a daily dose of 2 g/d of turmeric in capsules for 90 d. OUTCOME MEASURES: Anthropometric measures, blood pressure, serum homocysteine, and mental health status- stress, anxiety, depression scores-were recorded at baseline and postintervention. Dietary intake and physical activity (confounding variables) were also measured. RESULTS: The following anthropometric measures were reduced significantly between baseline and postintervention: (1) body weight-73.47 vs 72.45 kg (P = .04), (2) body mass index-28.75 vs 28.27 kg/m2 (P = .02), (3) waist circumference-81.85 vs 77.96 cm (P = .01), (4) hip circumference-102.72 vs 98.10 cm (P = .001), (5) body fat %-34.34 vs 32.58 (P = .00), (6) systolic blood pressure-119.12 vs 115.92 mm Hg (P = .04), and (7) anxiety scores-7.88 vs 4.73 (P = .03), as compared by paired t test. Homocysteine levels and stress and depression scores showed no significant changes. Dietary intake and physical activity did not vary significantly throughout the study period. CONCLUSION: Turmeric has the ability to reduce weight, decrease body fat percentage, lower systolic blood pressure, and relieve anxiety for young, obese and overweight females, when given at 2 g/d for 90 d.

Debate and role play for learning critical thinking and communication skills are being increasingly used in various undergraduate medical schools worldwide. We aim to compare students' views about effectiveness of two teaching strategies; debate and role play to exercise critical thinking and communication skills during problem-based learning (PBL). This is a comparative, cross-sectional, and questionnaire-based study. Our subjects were second year undergraduate female medical students enrolled in Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University (IAU), College of Medicine from September 2014-2016, divided into 10 small PBL groups (10-13 students/group/year). Students rated role play and debate as equally effective in improving communication skills. Debate was rated superior to role play in "opening new avenues of thinking" (p-value is 0.01), whereas in "integration of knowledge of basic medical sciences with clinical skills" and "reflection of real life experience" students rated role play being superior to debate (p-value 0.01 and 0.00, respectively). Both role play and debate are well accepted by the students in PBL curriculum as an effective teaching methodology. Both are perceived equally good in improving students' communication skills. Few aspects of critical thinking are improved more by role plays compared to debate and vice versa. © 2018 by The International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 46:336-342, 2018.

BACKGROUND: Stress of various origins suppresses male reproductive functions through releasing stress hormones. Antioxidant like ascorbic acid (AA) and alpha tocopherol (AT) have been thought to protect the body against stress induced damage. Whether, these antioxidants confer protection against the stress induced increased levels of corticosterone and nor-epinephrine, and decreased testosterone secretion have been investigated in this study. METHODS: This quasi experimental study was carried out at the Department of Physiology, Army Medical College Rawalpindi in collaboration with National Institute of Health, Islamabad during March to September 2009. Eighty male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into five groups with sixteen rats in each group. Group-I served as the control without stress while group-II was exposed to restraint stress for 6 hours, group-III was administered AA, group-IVAT and group-V was supplemented with both the antioxidants along with standard diet for one month. All antioxidant supplemented groups were exposed to restraint stress for 6 hours. Immediately after the stress episode, blood sample was obtained for the assay of serum testosterone, serum corticosterone by EIA and plasma nor-epinephrine levels by ELISA. Data were analyzed on SPSS-13 and p-value less than 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Acute restraint stress resulted in a statistically significant rise in corticosterone and nor-epinephrine levels and fall in serum testosterone levels. AA supplementation for one month revealed insignificant changes in stress induced hormonal parameters. AT alone and in combination with ascorbic acid prevented the fall in testosterone level as well as rise in corticosterone, however nor-epinephrine levels remained unchanged. CONCLUSION: Supplementation with AT alone or in combination with AA prevent reduction in testosterone and rise in corticosterone levels while keeping the nor-epinephrine levels unchanged after acute restraint stress in Sprague Dawley rats.
