RESUMEN

Endosulfan was widely used as an insecticide in the agricultural sector before its environmental persistence was fully understood. Although its fate and transport in the environment have been studied, the effects of historic endosulfan residues in soil and its bioaccumulation in crops are not well understood. This knowledge gap was addressed by investigating the dissipation and bioaccumulation of endosulfan in ginseng as a perennial crop in fresh and aged endosulfan-contaminated fields. In addition, the effect of granular biochar (GBC) treatment on the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) of endosulfan residue in ginseng was assessed. The 50% dissipation time (DT50) of the total endosulfan was over 770 days in both the fresh and aged soils under mulching conditions. This was at least twofold greater than the reported (6- > 200 days) in arable soil. Among the endosulfan congeners, the main contributor to the soil residue was endosulfan sulfate, as observed from 150 days after treatment. The BAF for the 2-year-old ginseng was similar in the fresh (1.682-2.055) and aged (1.372-2.570) soils, whereas the BAF for the 3-year-old ginseng in the aged soil (1.087-1.137) was lower than that in the fresh soil (1.771-2.387). The treatment with 0.3 wt% GBC extended the DT50 of endosulfan in soil; however, this could successfully suppress endosulfan uptake, and reduced the BAFs by 66.5-67.7% in the freshly contaminated soil and 32.3-41.4% in the aged soil. Thus, this adsorbent treatment could be an effective, financially viable, and sustainable option to protect human health by reducing plant uptake of endosulfan from contaminated soils.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: No studies have examined the association among serum hepcidin, iron indices, or anemia status based on the kidney function of non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. METHODS: We reviewed data of 2238 patients from a large-scale multicenter prospective Korean study (2011-2016) and excluded 198 patients with missing data regarding serum hepcidin, hemoglobin, transferrin saturation (TSAT), ferritin, and usage of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA) or supplemental iron and 363 patients using ESA or supplemental iron. Finally, 1677 patients were included. RESULTS: The mean patient age was 53.5 years, and 65.4% were men. TSAT and serum hepcidin were significantly associated with anemia status, whereas serum ferritin was not, regardless of anemia severity. For patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≥45 mL/min/1.73 m2, a 10% increase of TSAT was associated with hemoglobin <13 g/dL (odds ratio [OR], 0.628; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.515-0.765; P<0.001) and hemoglobin <11.5 g/dL (OR, 0.672; 95% CI, 0.476-0.950; P=0.024), whereas a 10-ng/mL increase of serum hepcidin was associated with hemoglobin <11.5 g/dL (OR, 1.379; 95% CI, 1.173-1.620; P<0.001) and hemoglobin <10.0 g/dL (OR, 1.360; 95% CI, 1.115-1.659; P=0.002) for patients with eGFR <45 mL/min/1.73 m2 according to multivariate logistic analysis. CONCLUSIONS: TSAT was associated with less severe anemia in early CKD patients. Serum hepcidin was associated with more severe anemia in advanced CKD patients.

The inverse relationship between 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] status and insulin resistance (IR) has been reported, but many interventional studies failed to reduce IR with 25(OH)D supplementation. In addition, there has been a paucity of literature on the interaction between 25(OH)D status and IR according to the degree of obesity in Asian subjects. We therefore evaluated the association between 25(OH)D status and IR according to the degree of obesity. Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2008-2010 were analyzed. The study subjects comprised 10,629 participants aged ≥20 years with fasting glucose<100 mg/dL. IR was estimated by the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA). We found an inverse linear association between 25(OH)D and loge(HOMA-IR) in multiple linear regression analysis; namely, 10 ng/mL increase of 25(OH)D was associated with 0.018 decrease of loge(HOMA-IR) (p<0.0001). In the subgroup analysis, we identified a distinct trend that the inverse linear association between 25(OH)D and loge(HOMA-IR) became more prominent with the progression of body mass index, waist circumference, or fat mass quartile (Q): -0.009, -0.004, -0.029 and -0.037 in Q1-Q4 of body mass index, -0.004, -0.014, -0.02 and -0.038 in Q1-Q4 of waist circumference, and -0.002, -0.001, -0.017 and -0.025 in Q1-Q4 of fat mass. Thus, the IR-lowering effect of 25(OH)D became more evident with the progression of obesity in an adult Korean population without increased fasting glucose levels. We suggest that proper supplementation of vitamin D might be beneficial in obese Korean adults.

Effects of Mn redox cycling on the stability of bioreduced U(IV) are evaluated here. U(VI) can be biologically reduced to less soluble U(IV) species and the stimulation of biological activity to that end is a salient remediation strategy; however, the stability of these materials in the subsurface environments where they form remains unproven. Manganese oxides are capable of rapidly oxidizing U(IV) to U(VI) in mixed batch systems where the two solid phases are in direct contact. However, it is unknown whether the same oxidation would take place in a porous medium. To probe that question, U(IV) immobilized in agarose gels was exposed to conditions allowing biological Mn(II) oxidation (HEPES buffer, Mn(II), 5% O2 and Bacillus sp. SG-1 spores). Results show the oxidation of U(IV) to U(VI) is due primarily to O2 rather than to MnO2. U(VI) produced is retained within the gel to a greater extent when Mn oxides are present, suggesting the formation of strong surface complexes. The implication for the long-term stability of U in a bioremediated site is that, in the absence of competing ligands, biological Mn(II) oxidation may promote the immobilization of U(VI) produced by the oxidation of U(IV).

The mobility of hexavalent uranium in soil and groundwater is strongly governed by adsorption to mineral surfaces. As strong naturally occurring adsorbents, manganese oxides may significantly influence the fate and transport of uranium. Models for U(VI) adsorption over a broad range of chemical conditions can improve predictive capabilities for uranium transport in the subsurface. This study integrated batch experiments of U(VI) adsorption to synthetic and biogenic MnO(2), surface complexation modeling, ζ-potential analysis, and molecular-scale characterization of adsorbed U(VI) with extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The surface complexation model included inner-sphere monodentate and bidentate surface complexes and a ternary uranyl-carbonato surface complex, which was consistent with the EXAFS analysis. The model could successfully simulate adsorption results over a broad range of pH and dissolved inorganic carbon concentrations. U(VI) adsorption to synthetic δ-MnO(2) appears to be stronger than to biogenic MnO(2), and the differences in adsorption affinity and capacity are not associated with any substantial difference in U(VI) coordination.

Primo-vessels have been observed in the rat abdominal cavity as floating thread like structures on and not adhering to fascia-wrapped internal organs. To date their presence, locations, and lengths have been irregular and unpredictable, and their identification not regularly repeatable, thus they have remained a nagging enigma in primo-vascular system research for several years. In this work, locations were found where primo-vessels were regularly present and observed repeatedly. These vessels were not floating or freely movable but lay in a regular position in the mesentery in the abdominal cavity of the rat, being observed between the cecum and small intestine and between the colon and mesentery root. The difference between a lymph vessel and a primo-vessel is described in anatomical and histological aspects. In addition, trypan blue was found to enter primo-vessels through the surrounding membranes and filled spaces between fibers comprising the primo-vessels. It is conjectured that the previously observed floating primo-vessels had anomalously and irregularly emerged, for some unknown physiological reasons, from primo-vessels normally located in the fascia-like mesentery.
