RESUMEN

The sufficient presence of trace elements (TE) is essential for anaerobic digestion. Barium (Ba) is considered a non-essential trace element that can be collaterally added to digesters as part of low-cost trace element sources or because of its presence in some feedstocks, such as crude glycerol. In the present study, the impact of Ba supplementation (2-2000 mg/L) on each stage of the anaerobic digestion (AD) process was evaluated using pure substrates (i.e., cellulose, glucose, a mixture of volatile fatty acids, sodium acetate and hydrogen) as well as a complex substrate (i.e., dried green fodder). Hydrolytic activity was affected at dosages higher than 200 mg Ba/L, whereas cellulose degradation was completely inhibited at 2000 mg Ba/L. The negative effects of the addition of Ba to methane production were observed only in the hydrolytic activity, and no effects were detected at any barium dosage in the subsequent anaerobic steps. Because Ba does not have a reported role as a cofactor of enzymes, this response could have been due to a direct inhibitory effect, a variation in the bioavailability of other trace elements, or even the availability of CO2/SO4 through precipitation as Ba-carbonates and sulphates. The results showed that the addition of Ba modified the chemical equilibrium of the studied system by varying the soluble concentration of some TEs and therefore their bioavailability. The highest variation was detected in the soluble concentration of zinc, which increased as the amount of Ba increased. Although little research has shown that Ba has some utility in anaerobic processes, its addition must be carefully monitored to avoid an undesirable modification of the chemical equilibrium in the system.

RESUMEN

Physical exercises and motor skill learning have been shown to induce changes in regional brain morphology, this has been demonstrated for various activities and tasks. Also individuals with special skills show differences in regional brain morphology. This has been indicated for professional musicians, London taxi drivers, as well as for athletes like dancers, golfers and judokas. However little is known about whether sports with different metabolic profiles (aerobic vs. anaerobic) are associated with different patterns of altered brain morphology. In this cross-sectional study we investigated two groups of high-performance athletes, one group performing sports that are thought to be mainly aerobic, and one group performing sports known to have intermittent phases of anaerobic metabolism. Using high-resolution structural imaging and voxel-based morphometry (VBM), we investigated a group of 26 male athletes consisting of 13 martial artists and 13 endurance athletes as well as a group of non-exercising men (n=13). VBM analyses revealed higher gray matter (GM) volumes in the supplementary motor area/dorsal premotor cortex (BA 6) in both athlete groups as compared to the control group. In addition, endurance athletes showed significantly higher GM volume in the medial temporal lobe (MTL), specifically in the hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus, which was not seen in the martial arts group. Our data suggest that high-performance sports are associated with changes in regional brain morphology in areas implicated in motor planning and motor learning. In addition high-level endurance sports seem to affect MTL structures, areas that have previously been shown to be modulated by aerobic exercise.

RESUMEN

UNLABELLED: Memory and attention are cognitive functions that depend heavily on the cholinergic system. Local activity of acetylcholine esterase (AChE) is an indicator of its integrity. Using a recently developed tracer for positron emission tomography (PET), C-11-labeled N-methyl-4-piperidyl-acetate (C11-MP4A), we measured regional AChE activity in 4 non-demented subjects, 4 patients with dementia of Alzheimer type (DAT) and 1 patient with senile dementia of Lewy body type (SDLT), and compared the findings with measurements of blood flow (CBF) and glucose metabolism (CMRGlc). Initial tracer extraction was closely related to CBF. AChE activity was reduced significantly in all brain regions in demented subjects, whereas reduction of CMRGlc and CBF was more limited to temporo-parietal association areas. AChE activity in SDLT was in the lower range of values in DAT. Our results indicate that, compared to non-demented controls, there is a global reduction of cortical AChE activity in dementia. RESUMEN

In an retrospective analysis of 316 patients with mandibular fractures treated between 1984 and 1993 at the maxillo-facial surgery of university of Cologne could be shown that the application of miniplate in local anesthesia causes no more complication than in general anesthesia. We would therefore recommend this technique for not to complicated cases of isolated or double fractures of the mandible. In cases of obstacles to general anesthesia it may be favoured even in severe cases.

RESUMEN

Autonomic dysreflexic hypertension occurs in up to 80% of spinal cord injury patients with lesions thoracic level 6 or higher. Pharmacologic agents directed at each part of the autonomic dysreflexic circuit were tested for efficacy in a rat model. Guanethidine (15 mg/kg intraperitoneally), alpha-methyl-paratyrosine (20 mg/kg intraperitonally), propranolol (3 mg/kg intraperitonally) and control were each tested on groups of three rats with intrinsic control blood pressure measurements. Results show an increase of 15 +/- 5 mm Hg diastolic pressure in control animals compared with no detectable increase with guanethidine or alpha-methyl-paratyrosine. There was an 11 +/- 2 mm Hg increase in diastolic pressure with propranolol. In conclusion, screening drug trials show that the ganglionic blocking agent, guanethidine, and competitive tyrosine uptake precursor, alpha-methyl-paratyrosine, effectively blocked dysreflexic hypertension, whereas the beta-blocker, propranolol, did not.

RESUMEN

Optimal cytoreductive surgery of ovarian cancer is based on the preoperative diagnosis and assessment of tumour spread. Of 147 patients who underwent staging laparotomy at the Department of Gynaecology of the University of Tübingen, intraoperative staging was compared retrospectively with the results of sonography, computed tomography, double-contrast enema and urography. Ultrasound and computed tomography were comparable concerning accuracy of the diagnosis in 86 and 79% of the cases, respectively. Combined application of both methods resulted in an accuracy of 90%. Involvement of colon was diagnosed by double-contrast enema in only 41% of the cases in which enterotomy had to be performed. Involvement of bladder and ureter was observed in 80% of the cases by intravenous urography. According to our results abdominal ultrasound and urography should be performed in patients with palpable pelvic masses. The application of computed tomography as an additional method is indicated in patients with tumour classified as benign by sonographic examination. Double-contrast enema is of limited value in the diagnosis of colon involvement.
