Defensive behaviors are critical for animal's survival. Both the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) and the parabrachial nucleus (PBN) have been shown to be involved in defensive behaviors. However, whether there are direct connections between them to mediate defensive behaviors remains unclear. Here, by retrograde and anterograde tracing, we uncover that cholecystokinin (CCK)-expressing neurons in the lateral PBN (LPBCCK) directly project to the PVN. By in vivo fiber photometry recording, we find that LPBCCK neurons actively respond to various threat stimuli. Selective photoactivation of LPBCCK neurons promotes aversion and defensive behaviors. Conversely, photoinhibition of LPBCCK neurons attenuates rat or looming stimuli-induced flight responses. Optogenetic activation of LPBCCK axon terminals within the PVN or PVN glutamatergic neurons promotes defensive behaviors. Whereas chemogenetic and pharmacological inhibition of local PVN neurons prevent LPBCCK-PVN pathway activation-driven flight responses. These data suggest that LPBCCK neurons recruit downstream PVN neurons to actively engage in flight responses. Our study identifies a previously unrecognized role for the LPBCCK-PVN pathway in controlling defensive behaviors.

Salicylic acid (SA) is an important plant hormone and signal required for establishing resistance to diverse pathogens and plant diseases. The abundant polyphenols in tea plants also defend plants from biotic and abiotic stresses. However, whether exogenous SA would increase the resistance of tea plants to adversity and the relationship between SA and polyphenols are still poorly understood. Here, we carried out SA treatment on tea seedlings and performed transcriptome sequencing. SA treatment inhibited the phenylpropanoid and flavonoid metabolic pathways but promoted the lignin metabolic pathways. The increased accumulation of lignin in tea leaves after treating with SA indicated that lignin might coordinate SA, enhance, and improve plant defense and disease resistance. Simultaneously, an SA-inducible flavonoid glucosyltransferase (CsUGT0554) specifically involved in 7-OH site glycosylation was characterized in vitro. These results provided valuable information about the effects of SA on tea seedlings and the molecular basis for SA-mediated immune responses.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a feasible technology option to reduce carbon emission in the power industry. However, the high cost of CCS deployment in power plants precludes its large-scale application. Carbon markets may act as an incentive for CCS, but the impact of auction and quota allocation mechanisms in carbon markets on CCS is unclear. In order to investigate the roles of the auction and quota allocation mechanism on the CCS retrofitting in coal-fired units, the life-cycle cost method was used to evaluate the CCS retrofitting cost of China's coal-fired units in the carbon market after supplementing the existing database. The impact of subsidies on stimulating CCS retrofitting was jointly considered. The results show that most units have a CCS retrofit Levelized additional cost of electricity (Lacoe) of $25.24/MWh to $64.57/MWh, making the CCS retrofitting burdensome, even for ultra-supercritical unit that has a low cost. The combination of grandfathering quota allocation mechanism and subsidy will effectively promote CCS retrofitting of coal-fired units, especially when the auction ratio is 30%-40%, about 400-540 GW units will be retrofitted under the carbon market using grandfathering and 12.05$/MWh-22.77$/MWh subsidies. Additionally, there are significant differences among provinces in terms of the lifetime costs of the CCS retrofitting of coal-fired units. Xinjiang, Guangdong, and Jiangsu, with retrofitting potentials of respectively 20.68 GW, 10.58 GW-43.00 GW and 15.00 GW-52.27 GW are best suited for the CCS retrofitting of coal-fired units.

RESUMEN

OBJECT: Scientific guided breathing technology is to be studied based on the cardiopulmonary interaction. METHODS: Heart rate variability was used as the target function to study the smoothly respiratory relaxation procedure in order to acquire the common pattern of regular and slow breathing. RESULTS: Music based on the acquired common pattern was created and a musical pattern temporally-related to the breathing movement monitored by a sensor could be chosen to guide the breathing interactively.
