RESUMEN

Photothermal immunotherapy is regarded as the ideal cancer therapeutic modality to against malignant solid tumors; however, its therapeutic benefits are often modest and require improvement. In this study, a thermoresponsive nanoparticle (BTN@LND) composed of a photothermal agent (PTA) and pyroptosis inducer (lonidamine) were developed to enhance immunotherapy applications. Specifically, our "two-step" donor engineering strategy produced the strong NIR-II-absorbing organic small-molecule PTA (BTN) that exhibited high NIR-II photothermal performance (ε1064 = 1.51 × 104 M-1 cm-1, η = 75.8%), and this facilitates the diagnosis and treatment of deep tumor tissue. Moreover, the fabricated thermally responsive lipid nanoplatform based on BTN efficiently delivered lonidamine to the tumor site and achieved spatiotemporal release triggered by the NIR-II photothermal effect. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that the NIR-II photothermal therapy (PTT)-mediated on-demand release of cargo effectively faciliated tumor cell pyroptosis, thereby intensifying the immunogenic cell death (ICD) process to promote antitumor immunotherapy. As a result, this intelligent component bearing photothermal and chemotherapy can maximally suppress the growth of tumors, thus providing a promising approach for pyroptosis/NIR-II PTT synergistic therapy against tumors.

RESUMEN

Objective: To analyze the use of antimicrobial drugs in patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We searched for literature about antimicrobial treatment in COVID-19 patients through the Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, the Chinese biomedical literature database, CNKI, the Chinese journal full-text database, Wanfang, and Vipu. The quality evaluation of the literature was performed by Jadad's quality score. Results: A total of three articles reported on ivermectin treatment in patients with COVID-19, and the Meta-analysis showed no clinical and statistical heterogeneity among the studies (I2 = 15%, P = .31), a fixed effect model was used to incorporate effect sizes. The clinical effect of the observed group was not different from the control group (P = .16). None of the three ivermectin articles with clinical effect as the effect indicator showed a significant difference (P > .05), suggesting no publication bias. A total of four publications reported the treatment with azithromycin in patients with COVID-19, and the Meta-analysis showed no clinical and statistical heterogeneity between the studies (I2 = 0%, P = .88), using a fixed-effect model to incorporate the effect sizes. The clinical effect of the observed group was not different from the control group (P = .57). None of the four azithromycin articles with a clinical effect as the effect index was statistically significant (P > .05), suggesting no publication bias. Conclusion: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the patient's use of antibiotics does not significantly improve clinical efficacy, so antibiotic use is recommended only for patients with complicated bacterial infections.

RESUMEN

Context: Hydrocephalus refers to excessive secretion of cerebrospinal fluid, its insufficient absorption, or its blocked circulation and frequently occurs after a cerebral hemorrhage. The mortality and disability rates for cerebral hemorrhage are high. Objective: The study intended to evaluate the clinical efficacy of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine in the treatment of hydrocephalus after a cerebral hemorrhage, using systematic screening and analysis of published literature. Design: The research team performed a meta-analysis by searching databases-PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang database, and Chinese Biomedical Literature-and collected Chinese and English publications from the establishment of each database until December 2022 discussing studies that used a TCM treatment that promoted blood circulation and removed blood stasis, combined with conventional western medicine, for hydrocephalus after cerebral hemorrhage. The keywords were promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, cerebral hemorrhage, and hydrocephalus. The team performed the meta-analysis using RevMan 5.3. Results: The research team found five relevant studies, all of which were randomized controlled trials. The clinical efficacy TCM combined with conventional Western medicine was significantly better than that of other treatments [MD = 1.77, 95% CI (0.23, 3.31), Z = 12.18, P < .001]. The NIHSS score after the integrated treatments also improved significantly more than those of other treatments [MD = -2.54, 95% CI (-4.07, -1.01), Z = 5.16, P < .00001]. Conclusions: Activating blood circulation and removing blood stasis using TCM, combined with conventional Western medicine, can achieve ideal therapeutic effects for patients with hydrocephalus after a cerebral hemorrhage, which can have a positive influence on clinical efficacy and reduce the NIHSS score, and the combined treatments have a clinical value.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Chronic gastritis (CG) is an inflammatory disease of the gastric mucosa. Shen-ling-bai-zhu san (SLBZS), a traditional Chinese medicine formula, is widely used for treating CG. Nevertheless, its effects are currently unclear. AIM: To determine the clinical evidence and potential mechanisms of SLBZS for the treatment of CG. METHODS: We systematically searched 3 English (PubMed, Embase, Medline) and 4 Chinese databases (Cochrane Library Central Register of Controlled Trials, China National Knowledge Infrastructure database, Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform, and the VIP information resource integration service platform) without language or publication bias restriction. Qualified studies were selected according to pre-set inclusion and exclusion criteria. RevMan 5.3 software was used for meta-analysis and literature quality assessment, Stata 14.0 software was used for sensitivity analysis, GRADE profiler 3.6 was used to evaluate the quality of evidence. And then, network pharmacology analysis was applied to primary research the mechanisms of action of SLBZS on CG. RESULTS: Fourteen studies were finally included, covering 1335 participants. Meta-analysis indicated that: (1) SLBZS was superior to conventional therapies [risk ratio (RR): 1.29, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.21 to 1.37, P < 0.00001]; (2) SLBZS was better than conventional therapies [RR: 0.24, 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 0.11 to 0.55, P = 0.0007] in terms of recurrence rate and reversal of Helicobacter pylori positivity (RR: 1.20, 95%CI: 1.11 to 1.30, P < 0.00001); and (3) The safety of SLBZS for CG remains unclear. According to the GRADE method, the quality of evidence was not high. Besides, SNZJS might treat CG by acting on related targets and pathways such as EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor resistance, the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, and others. CONCLUSION: SLBZS might be useful in treating CG, but long-term effects and specific clinical mechanisms of it maintain unclear. More samples and high-quality clinical experiments should be assessed and verified in the next step.

RESUMEN

Subcritical hydrothermal liquefaction of poplar was performed at 220-280 °C, and the liquid phase produced was extracted by ethyl acetate to obtain light oil (LO), which contained LO1 (water-soluble) and LO2 (ethyl acetate-soluble). The residue was further extracted with acetone to produce heavy oil (HO) and solid residue (SR). The highest bio-oil yield of 19.88% was obtained at 260 °C. The HO produced at 260 °C had the highest content of C (69.13%) and the higher heating value was 27.97 MJ/kg. The O/C and H/C ratios of LO were higher than those of HO due to less aromatics in LO. Oxidative inhibition rates of bio-oils, measured in DPPH-ethanol solution at a concentration of 0.1 mg/mL, reached 60.76% for LO1 while 90.29% and 90.85% for LO2 and HO, respectively. The bio-oil with good antioxidant activity can be utilized as an additive in bio-diesel to improve oxidation stability.

RESUMEN

To study the differences in chemical composition analysis and spatial distribution of young Neosinocalamus affinis bamboo, we used the methods of standard of National Renewable Energy Laboratory and confocal Raman microscopy, respectively. It was found that the acid-soluble lignin and acid-insoluble lignin content showed an inverse relationship with the increasing bamboo age. Raman analysis revealed that Raman signal intensity of lignin in both the secondary cell wall and the compound middle lamella regions showed a similar increase trend with growth of bamboo. In addition, eight hemicellulosic fractions were obtained by successively treating holocellulose of the 2-, 4-, 8-, and 12-month-old Neosinocalamus affinis bamboo culms with DMSO and alkaline solution. The ratio of arabinose to xylose of hemicelluloses was increased with the growth of bamboo. FT-IR and NMR analyses revealed that DMSO-soluble hemicelluloses of young bamboo culms are mainly composed of highly substituted xylans and ß-d-glucans.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Numerous antimanic treatments have been introduced over the past two decades, particularly second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs). However, it is not clear whether such newer agents provide any advantage over older treatments. METHODS: A historical cohort design investigated the nationwide population of outpatients with bipolar disorder treated in the Department of Veterans Affairs who were newly initiated on an antimanic agent between 2003 and 2010 (N=27 727). The primary outcome was likelihood of all-cause hospitalization during the year after initiation, controlling for numerous demographic, clinical, and treatment characteristics. Potential correlates of effect were explored by investigating time to initiation of a second antimanic agent or antidepressant. RESULTS: After control for covariates, those initiated on lithium or valproate monotherapy, compared to those beginning SGA monotherapy, were significantly less likely to be hospitalized, had a longer time to hospitalization, and had fewer hospitalizations in the subsequent year. Those on combination treatment had a significantly higher likelihood of hospitalization, although they also had a longer time to addition of an additional antimanic agent or antidepressant. CONCLUSIONS: The present analysis of a large and unselected nationwide population provides important complementary data to that from controlled trials. Although various mechanisms may be responsible for the results, the data support the utilization of lithium or valproate, rather than SGAs, as the initial antimanic treatment in bipolar disorder. A large-scale, prospective, randomized, pragmatic clinical trial comparing the initiation of SGA monotherapy to that of lithium or valproate monotherapy is a logical next step.

RESUMEN

Hydrothermal liquefaction of cornstalk at 180-300 °C at ratios of water to cornstalk of 6-14 was conducted, and the reaction products were lumped into gas, water-soluble organics (ethanol-insoluble and ethanol-soluble organics), heavy oil, volatile organic compounds, and acid-soluble and acid-insoluble solid residues. Low temperature, high ratio of water to cornstalk, and short reaction time favored the formation of bio-oil (ethanol-insoluble organics, ethanol-soluble organics, and heavy oil) but inhibited the formation of acid-insoluble solid residue. Increasing temperature and reaction time increased the yields of gas and volatile organic compounds, whereas decreased the yield of acid-soluble solid residue. Bio-oil yields increased first and then decreased at a ratio of water to cornstalk higher than 10. Overall, the studied reaction parameters influenced the conversion among the lumps and product properties. This study suggests that lump analysis provides a promising approach to describe the product distributions in biomass liquefaction.

RESUMEN

Microwave-assisted extraction in organic acid aqueous solution (formic acid/acetic acid/water, 3/5/2, v/v/v) was applied to isolate lignin from bamboo. Additionally, the structural features of the extracted lignins were thoroughly investigated in terms of C9 formula, molecular weight distribution, FT-IR, (1)H NMR and HSQC spectroscopy. It was found that with an increase in the severity of microwave-assisted extraction, there was an increase of phenolic hydroxyl content in the lignin. In addition, an increase of the severity resulted in a decrease of the bound carbohydrate content as well as molecular weight of the lignin. Antioxidant activity investigation indicated that the radical scavenging index of the extracted lignins (0.35-1.15) was higher than that of BHT (0.29) but lower than that of BHA (3.85). The results suggested that microwave-assisted organic acid extraction provides a promising way to prepare lignin from bamboo with good antioxidant activity for potential application in the food industry.
