RESUMEN

Nutritional disorders have become a major public health issue, requiring increased targeted approaches. Personalized nutrition adapted to individual needs has garnered dramatic attention as an effective way to improve nutritional balance and maintain health. With the rapidly evolving fields of genomics and nutrigenetics, accumulation of genetic variants has been indicated to alter the effects of nutritional supplementation, suggesting its indispensable role in the genotype-based personalized nutrition. Additionally, the metabolism of nutrients, such as lipids, especially omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, glucose, vitamin A, folic acid, vitamin D, iron, and calcium could be effectively improved with related genetic variants. This review focuses on existing literatures linking critical genetic variants to the nutrient and the ways in which these variants influence the outcomes of certain nutritional supplementations. Although further studies are required in this direction, such evidence provides valuable insights for the guidance of appropriate interventions using genetic information, thus paving the way for the smooth transition of conventional generic approach to genotype-based personalized nutrition.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This prospective study aimed to evaluate the safety of improved transurethral plasma kinetic enucleation of the prostate (iTUPKEP) in the perioperative period in high-risk patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and coronary artery disease. METHODS: Patients with BPH underwent surgical treatment with transurethral vapour resection of the prostate (TUVP) or iTUPKEP. Serum endothelin-1, cardiac troponin-I, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein concentrations were evaluated in the short term after surgery. The postvoid residual urine volume, maximum urinary flow rate, international prostate symptom score, and quality of life indicators were evaluated in the long term after surgery. RESULTS: Endothelin-1 concentrations were lower in the iTUPKEP group than in the TUVP group at 1 and 2 days postoperatively. The iTUPKEP group had lower cardiac troponin-I and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein concentrations at all time points postoperatively. The postvoid residual urine volume, international prostate symptom score, and quality of life values were lower, but the maximum urinary flow rate was higher, in the iTUPKEP group than in the TUVP group. CONCLUSIONS: The iTUPKEP procedure has a smaller effect on vascular endothelial function compared with TUVP. Therefore, iTUPKEP may reduce the incidence of postoperative cardiovascular adverse events in high-risk patients with BPH and coronary artery disease.

RESUMEN

Background and Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) followed by lipiodol infusion in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT). Materials and Methods: Thirty-two patients with advanced HCC and PVTT who received HAIC with regimens of cisplatin, mitomycin-C, and 5-fluorouracil followed by lipiodol infusion were enrolled. The primary efficacy endpoint was tumor response rate. The modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (mRECIST) was used for assessment of treatment response. The secondary endpoints were overall survival (OS) and progression free survival (PFS). Prognostic factors for survival also were evaluated. Results: The median OS and PFS were 11.9 and 9.5 months, respectively. Seventeen patients (53.1%) achieved objective response, and 23 patients (71.9%) achieved disease control. The length of survival in the responder and disease control groups was longer than in the non-responder and progressive disease groups after two cycles of HAIC (responder vs. non-responder: 16.5 vs. 7.9 months, p = 0.001; disease control vs. progressive disease: 12.3 vs. 5.6 months, p < 0.001) and after completing HAIC (responder vs. non-responder: 15.7 vs. 6.9 months, p = 0.001; disease control vs. progressive disease: 13.6 vs. 6.9 months, p < 0.001). Better survival was associated with Child-Pugh A liver function (p = 0.013), with early response to two HAIC cycles (p = 0.009), and with response (p = 0.02) and disease control (p = 0.001) after completing HAIC treatment. Conclusion: HAIC followed by lipiodol infusion is a safe and feasible treatment for advanced HCC with PVTT. Patients with early response could continue HAIC treatment with expected prolonged survival.

RESUMEN

Potato starch serves as an excellent raw material or food additive in the food industry. With the advancement of the potato staple food strategy in China, improving the potato starch yield and quality has attracted more and more attention. Potassium is an essential nutrient for potato due to its direct effects on the yield and quality of potato tubers. Here, the effects of three different potassium levels on potato starch physicochemical properties were evaluated by field experiments. With increasing potassium fertilization rates, the amylose content, phosphorus content and particle size decreased, thereby resulting in low gelatinization temperature, breakdown and setback viscosity, and high swelling power, relative crystallinity and transparency. Our study indicated that enhanced potassium fertilization improved the resistance to heat and shear stress and decreased the retrogradation of starch, and the 270 kg/ha potassium fertilization rate could obtain the highest tuber and starch production with desirable starch physicochemical properties. The integrated results also provide some novel insights into the management of the fertilization conditions to obtain native starches with special properties.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Foliar spraying of selenium (Se) has increasingly been applied to improve Se concentrations in grain crops, although little information is available about the properties of Se-enriched fruits. In the present study, selenium distribution in blueberry and Se effect on blueberry quality were investigated by foliar spraying selenite or selenate (200 g ha-1 ) on two blueberry cultivars (Bluecrop and Northland) during the young fruit or coloring stage. RESULTS: Selenium concentration in blueberry was mainly affected by cultivar and spray stage relative to the Se source. Northland was 1.3- to 1.5-fold higher than Bluecrop with respect to Se enrichment. Se treatment at the young fruit stage induced a 1.5- to 2.3-fold increase compared to that at the coloring stage with respect to the Se concentration of blueberry. Additionally, selenium was mainly stored in pomace, with an accumulative distribution ratio of 89.3-94.9%. The proportion of organic Se reached up to 77.0% in blueberry. Furthermore, the foliar application of Se significantly increased the anthocyanin concentration and the intact fruit rate of blueberry. CONCLUSION: Se-enriched blueberry can be used as a 'functional food'. Because Se was mainly accumulated in the pomace, the consumption of blueberries as fresh fruit, dried fruit and jam can improve the efficiency of Se supplement. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.
