RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of acupuncture on the protein kinase R-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK)/eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2α (eIF2α) signaling pathway in the hippocampus of rats with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), so as to explore the underlying mechanism of acupuncture in treating PTSD. METHODS: Twenty-eight SD rats were randomly divided into normal, model, acupuncture and sertraline groups, with 7 rats in each group. The PTSD model was established by single prolonged stress method. The next day after modeling, acupuncture was applied to "Baihui" (GV20) and "Dazhui" (GV14) of rats in the acupuncture group for 10 min, once a day for 7 days. Sertraline (10 mg/kg) was given by gavage to rats of the sertraline group daily for 7 days. The behavioral changes of rats were detected by elevated cross maze experiment and new object recognition experiment. The expression levels of PERK,phosphorylated(p)-PERK, eIF2α, p-eIF2α and activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) proteins in hippocampus were detected by Western blot. The ultrastructure of hippocampal neurons was observed by transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS: Compared with the normal group, the percentage of times and retention time of entering the open arm of the elevated cross maze experiment, and new object recognition index were significantly decreased (P<0.01); the expression levels of p-PERK, p-eIF2α and ATF4 proteins in hippocampus were significantly increased (P<0.05) of rats in the model group. Compared with the model group, the percentage of times and retention time of entering the open arm, and new object recognition index were significantly increased (P<0.05,P<0.01), the expression levels of p-PERK, p-eIF2α and ATF4 proteins in hippocampus were significantly decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01) of rats in the acupuncture and sertraline groups; the expression level of eIF2α protein was significantly decreased (P<0.05) in the sertraline group. Hippocampal neurons in the model group were damaged, the rough endoplasmic reticulum showed severe dilation, the mitochondrial cristae showed reduction or mild cavitation; compared with the model group, hippocampal neurons structural damage and the rough endoplasmic reticulum dilation were alleviated, and only some of the mitochondrial cristae decreased in the acupuncture and sertraline groups. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture can alleviate the anxiety behavior as well as the recognition and memory ability of PTSD rats, and its mechanism may be related to the inhibition of hippocampus PERK/eIF2α signaling pathway and the reduction of hippocampal neuron damage caused by endoplasmic reticulum stress.

RESUMEN

The development of food-derived Xanthine Oxidase (XO) inhibitors is critical to the treatment of hyperuricemia and oxidative stress-related disease. Few studies report on milk protein hydrolysates' XO inhibitory activity, with the mechanism of their interaction remaining elusive. Here, different commercial enzymes were used to hydrolyze α-lactalbumin and bovine colostrum casein. The two proteins hydrolyzed by alkaline protease exhibited the most potent XO inhibitory activity (bovine casein: IC50 = 0.13 mg mL-1; α-lactalbumin: IC50 = 0.28 mg mL-1). Eight potential XO inhibitory peptides including VYPFPGPI, GPVRGPFPIIV, VYPFPGPIPN, VYPFPGPIHN, QLKRFSFRSFIWR, LVYPFPGPIHN, AVFPSIVGR, and GFININSLR (IC50 of 4.67-8.02 mM) were purified and identified from alkaline protease hydrolysates by using gel filtration, LC-MS/MS and PeptideRanker. The most important role of inhibiting activity of peptides is linked to hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding based on the results of molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation. The enzymatic hydrolysate of α-lactalbumin and bovine colostrum casein could be a competitive candidates for hyperuricemia-resisting functional food.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) progression is associated with the balance of T-regulatory (Treg) and T-helper 17 (Th17) cells, while the role of microRNAs (miRs) in regulating Treg/Th17 cell balance has not been clarified. This study aimed to assess whether moxibustion could regulate Treg/Th17 cell balance by modulating the miR-221/suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3) axis in the RA mouse model. METHODS: A mouse model of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) was established in male DBA/1J mice. Twenty-two days after CIA induction, the mice received daily treatment with moxibustion for 12 times. Pathological scores were assessed according to the levels of synovial hyperplasia. The expression levels of cytokines interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interferon-γ (IFN-γ), IL-17 and IL-10 were analyzed in serum by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4+) splenocytes was analyzed by fluorescence-activated cell sorting. The expression levels of RA-related miRs and target genes were subsequently detected, and the target of miR-221 was confirmed by the dual-luciferase reporter assay. RESULTS: It was revealed that moxibustion treatment decreased the pathological scores and downregulated the expression levels of IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ and IL-17, while upregulated the expression level of IL-10. The Treg/Th17 cell balance was regulated by moxibustion treatment. The expression level of miR-221 was suppressed by moxibustion treatment. Furthermore, SOCS3 was found as the direct target of miR-221, which mediated the function of moxibustion by regulating the Treg/Th17 cell balance. CONCLUSION: Moxibustion therapy regulated the Treg/Th17 cell balance by modulating the miR-221/SOCS3 axis in the RA mouse model.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) leads to huge economic losses in the poultry industry worldwide. The high levels of mutations of IBV render vaccines partially protective. Therefore, it is urgent to explore an effective antiviral drug or agent. The present study aimed to investigate the in vivo anti-IBV activity of a mixture of plant essential oils (PEO) of cinnamaldehyde (CA) and glycerol monolaurate (GML), designated as Jin-Jing-Zi. RESULTS: The antiviral effects were evaluated by clinical signs, viral loads, immune organ indices, antibody levels, and cytokine levels. The infection rates in the PEO-M (middle dose) and PEO-H (high dose) groups were significantly lower than those in the prevention, positive drug, and PEO-L (low dose) groups. The cure rates in the PEO-M and PEO-H groups were significantly higher than those in the prevention, positive drug, and PEO-L groups, and the PEO-M group had the highest cure rate of 92.31%. The symptom scores and IBV mRNA expression levels were significantly reduced in the PEO-M group. PEO significantly improved the immune organ indices and IBV-specific antibody titers of infected chickens. The anti-inflammatory factor levels of IL-4 and IFN-γ in the PEO-M group maintained high concentrations for a long time. The IL-6 levels in the PEO-M group were lower than those in prevention, positive drug, and PEO-L groups. CONCLUSION: The PEO had remarkable inhibition against IBV and the PEO acts by inhibiting virus multiplication and promoting immune function, suggesting that the PEO has great potential as a novel anti-IBV agent for inhibiting IBV infection.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of acupuncture on endoplasmic reticulum stress-related molecules glucose regulated protein 78 kD (GRP78), C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP), cysteinyl aspartate specific proteinase-12 (Caspase-12) and cysteinyl aspartate specific proteinase-3 (Caspase-3)in the hippocampus of rats with post-traumatic stress disorder, so as to explore the possible mechanism of acupuncture in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS: Twenty-eight SD rats were randomly divided into normal control, model, acupuncture and sertraline groups, with 7 rats in each group. The PTSD rat model was established by single prolonged stress. After modeling, acupuncture was applied to "Baihui" (GV20) and "Dazhui" (GV14) for rats of the acupuncture group for 10 min, once a day for 7 days. Sertraline (10 mg/kg) was given by gavage to rats of the sertraline group daily for 7 days. Rats' behavior was assessed by open field test and novelty-suppressed test. The mRNA expression levels of GRP78 and CHOP in the hippocampus were detected by real-time PCR. The expression le-vels of Caspase-12 and Caspase-3 in the hippocampus were detected by Western blot. RESULTS: Compared with the normal control group, the rearing and crossing times were decreased (P<0.05), the time remaining in the central zone and the total distance of movement were significantly reduced (P<0.01, P<0.05), the time of entering the central area for the first time was significantly increased (P<0.01), the latency of the novelty-suppressed feeding was significantly increased (P<0.05) in the model group, meanwhile the expression level of GRP78 and CHOP mRNAs, Caspase-12 and Caspase-3 proteins in the hippocampus were increased (P<0.05, P<0.01). In comparison with the model group, the crossing times, the time remaining in the central zone and total distance of movement were increased significantly (P<0.05, P<0.01), while the time of entering the central area for the first time, the expression levels of GRP78 and CHOP mRNAs, and Caspase-12 protein in the hippocampus were obviously decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01) in the acupuncture and sertraline groups. In addition, the rearing times were increased significantly (P<0.05), the latency of the novelty-suppressed feeding and the expression of Caspase-3 were decreased significantly (P<0.05) in the sertraline group than in the model group. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture can significantly down-regulate the expression of endoplasmic reticulum stress-related molecules GRP78, CHOP and Caspase-12 in PTSD rats, which may be one of the mechanisms of acupuncture in treating PTSD.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To observe the efficacy difference between conventional needling depth and deep needling for dyspepsia after ischemic stroke. METHODS: A total of 120 patients with dyspepsia after ischemic stroke were randomized into an observation group (60 cases, 4 cases dropped off) and a control group (60 cases, 3 cases dropped off). Basic treatment was given in the both groups. In the observation group, deep needling was applied at Zhongwan (CV 12), Tianshu (ST 25) and Liangmen (ST 21) for 60-70 mm, after even reinforcing-reducing manipulation of lifting-thrusting technique, the needles were withdrew to 35-50 mm. In the control group, the same acupoints as the observation group were selected and punctured for 25 mm. The needles were retained for 30 min, once a day, 6 times a week for 2 weeks in the both groups. The dyspepsia TCM symptom score was observed before treatment, 1 day and 1, 2 weeks into treatment, and the clinical efficacy was evaluated 2 weeks into treatment in the both groups. RESULTS: The effective rate was 92.9% (52/56) in the observation group, which was superior to 78.9% (45/57) in the control group (P<0.01). Compared before treatment, the total scores and sub-item scores of dyspepsia TCM symptom of 1, 2 weeks into treatment were decreased in the both groups (P<0.01, P<0.05). The total scores and abdominal fullness scores of dyspepsia TCM symptom of each time point into treatment and hiccup score of 2 weeks into treatment in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.01, P<0.05). The total scores of dyspepsia TCM symptom 1, 2 weeks into treatment in the mild patients and each time point into treatment in the moderate patients of the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Conventional needling depth and deep needling can both improve the clinical symptoms in patients with dyspepsia after ischemic stroke, and deep needling has faster and better efficacy.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study investigated the effectiveness of orofacial myofunctional therapy(OMT) in improving facial morphology of children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) after adenotonsillectomy (AT). METHODS: Ten children aged from 4-7 years with persistent oral breathing for more than 1 month after adenotonsillectomy were chosen to receive orofacial myofunctional therapy. The patients were required to take photos before and after orofacial myofunctional therapy. In order to compare the soft changes before and after OMT treatment, twelve representative mark points were selected and used for proportion and angle measurements. Graphpad Prism 8 statistical software was used for statistical analysis, to compare the differences in facial morphology of patients before and after treatment. RESULTS: Compared with before OMT, a significant difference was found in the proportion of Sn-Ls/Sn-Stms(P=0.0002), Sn-Stms/Sn-Me'(P<0.05), as well as in the angle of Gs-Sn-Pos (P<0.05), nasolabial angle(P=0.0005), mentolabial angle (P=0.0026) after OMT treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Orofacial myofunctional therapy can be considered as an effective complementary treatment for OSA patients with oral breathing after adenotonsillectomy.

RESUMEN

Alismatis rhizoma (AR), which is the dried rhizome of Alisma orientale (Sam.) Juz. (Alismataceae), is an important component of many famous Chinese formulas for hypoglycemic. This study aimed to evaluate the insulin resistance (IR) alleviating effects of AR triterpenes (ART) and ART component compatibility (ARTC, the mixture of 16-oxo-alisol A, 16-oxo-alisol A 23-acetate, 16-oxo-alisol A 24-acetate, alisol C, alisol C 23-acetate, alisol L, alisol A, alisol A 23-acetate, alisol A 24-acetate, alisol L 23-acetate, alisol B, alisol B 23-acetate, 11-deoxy-alisol B and 11-deoxy-alisol B 23-acetate) in high-fat diet-induced IR mice and plamitate-treated IR C2C12 cells, respectively. A dose of 200 mg/kg of ART was orally administered to IR mice, and different doses (25, 50, and 100 µg/ml) of ARTC groups were treated to IR C2C12 cells. IPGTT, IPITT, body weight, Hb1AC, FFA, TNF-α, MCP-1, and IR-associated gene expression (p-AMPK, p-IRS-1, PI3K, p-AKT, p-JNK, and GLUT4) were measured in IR mice. Glucose uptake, TNF-α, MCP-1, and IR-associated gene expression were also measured in IR C2C12 cells. Results showed that ART alleviated high-fat diet-induced IR in the skeletal muscle of mice, and this finding was further validated by ARTC. This study demonstrated that ART presented a notable IR alleviating effect by regulating IR-associated gene expression, and triterpenes were the material basis for the IR alleviating activity of AR.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of acupuncture on the expression of proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-6 (IL-6), microglia marker ion calcium adaptor protein (Iba-1) and triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) in the prefrontal cortex of chronic stress-induced depression rats, so as to explore its antidepressant mechanism. METHODS: Thirty-two SD rats were randomly divided into normal control, model, acupuncture and fluoxetine groups, with 8 rats in each group. The depression model was established by using chronic mild unpredictable stress methods for 6 weeks. Manual acupuncture stimulation was applied to "Baihui" (GV20) and "Yintang" (GV29) for 10 min before modeling for 6 weeks. Fluoxetine (10 mg/kg, 1 mg/mL) was given to rats of the fluoxetine group by gavage before stress stimulation, once every day for 6 weeks. The open field test was used to evaluate the behavioral changes of rats. The contents of IL-1ß, IL-6 in the prefrontal cortex were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Immunohistochemistry was used to determine the expression of Iba-1 in the prefrontal cortex. The TREM2 gene expression in the prefrontal cortex was determined by real time fluorescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). RESULTS: After modeling, the crossing numbers and rearing times were significantly decreased in the model group relevant to the control group (P<0.05). After the treatment, the crossing numbers were significantly increased in the acupuncture and fluoxetine groups (P<0.05), while the rearing times in the acupuncture group were significantly increased (P<0.05). Compared with the control group, the contents of IL-1ß, IL-6 and the expression of Iba-1 positive cells in the prefrontal cortex were significantly increased in the model group (P<0.05), while the expression of TREM2 gene in the prefrontal cortex was significantly decreased (P<0.05). After the treatment, the increased levels of IL-1ß, IL-6 and Iba-1 positive cells and the decreased TREM2 gene expression were considerably reversed in both acupuncture and fluoxetine groups compared with the model group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture intervention plays a positive role in anti-depression in rats, which may be related to its effects in inhibiting the activation of microglia, reducing the expression of proinflammatory cytokines, and increasing TREM2 expression in the prefrontal cortex.

RESUMEN

A novel wastewater treatment process, which couples chemically enhanced primary sedimentation (CEPS) of sewage with acidogenic fermentation of sludge in tandem, has recently been developed to improve the removal of pollutants and nutrients, and recover valuable resources such as phosphorus and organics. This study represented the first laboratory-based examination on the level and removal of the emerging contaminants, including retinoids (i.e., retinoic acids (RAs) and their metabolites) and oestrogenic endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs; e.g., 4-nonylphenol, bisphenol A, etc.), in sewage, sludge and its supernatant during this novel wastewater treatment process. The results showed that 65% of retinoids and 73% of EDCs were removed from sewage after aluminum (Al) based CEPS, while 80% of retinoids and 72% of EDCs were removed after iron (Fe) based CEPS. After acidogenic fermentation of the CEPS sludge, 50% and 58% of retinoids, and 50% and 47% of EDCs were further removed in the supernatants of Al-sludge and Fe-sludge, respectively. While there were comparable removals for these two classes of emerging contaminants during Al- and Fe-based CEPS and sludge fermentation, Fe-based CEPS of sewage and sludge fermentation should be preferentially considered, given the relatively lower production of Fe-sludge and lower accumulation of retinoids in Fe-sludge. The levels of retinoids and EDCs in the supernatant and sludge changed during acidogenic fermentation of Fe-sludge. The removals of at-4-oxo-RA (i.e., the dominant retinoid) and bisphenol A (i.e., the dominant EDC) in the supernatant followed the pseudo first-order reaction model, with a half-life of 1.62 days (in the first two days) and 1.55 days (in the whole experiment of seven days), respectively. The results demonstrated the effective removal of emerging contaminants from the sewage and the supernatant during the CEPS and acidogenic sludge fermentation.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To observe the influence of acupuncture on the expression of pivotal molecules of Nod-like receptor protein 3(NLRP3) inflammasome signal pathway in the prefrontal cortex of rats with depression, so as to explore the underlying mechanism of acupuncture on treatment of depression. METHODS: SD rats were randomly divided into 4 groups (8 rats/group),namely control, model, acupuncture and fluoxetine groups. The depression model was established by using chronic unpredictable mild stress for 6 weeks. During modeling, acupuncture (10 min)was applied to "Baihui"(GV20) and "Yintang"(EX-HN3) for rats of the acupuncture group once a day, with 1 day interval after consecutive 6 day-period for 36 days. Fluoxetine was given (10 mg/kg,1 mg/mL) by gavage to rats of the fluoxetine group every day during modeling for 42 days. The novelty-suppressed feeding test was used to observe feeding behavior of rats. The expressions of NLRP3 and apoptosis associated speck like protein containing a CARD (ASC), Caspase-1, and contents of IL-1ß in the prefrontal cortex were detected by Western blot, immunohistoche-mistry and ELISA, separately. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the latency of the novelty-suppressed feeding, and the expressions of NLRP3, ASC, Caspase-1 and IL-1ß content in the prefrontal cortex of the model group were significantly increased (P<0.01). Following the interventions, the latency of the noveltysuppressed feeding, and the expressions of NLRP3, ASC, Caspase-1 and IL-1ß content in the prefrontal cortex in the acupuncture and fluoxetine groups were significantly decreased (P<0.05,P<0.01). There was no significant differences in the above indicators between the acupuncture group and the fluoxetine group (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture could inhibit the expression of NLRP3 inflammasome signal pathway in the pre-frontal cortex, and reduce the inflammation in the brain, which may mediate the anti-depressant effect of acupuncture.

RESUMEN

The present study is to establish a quantitative analysis of multi-components by single marker(QAMS) for determining contents of seven compositions in Alismatis Rhizoma, alismoxide, alisol C 23-acetate, alisol A, alismol, alisol B, alisol B 23-acetate and 11-deoxy-alisol B. Six relative correction factors(RCFs) of alismoxide, alisol C 23-acetate, alisol A, alismol, alisol B and 11-deoxy-alisol B were established in the UPLC method with alisol B 23-acetate as the internal standard, which was to calculate the mass fraction of each. The mass fraction of seven effective constituents in Alismatis Rhizoma was calculated by the external standard method(ESM) at the same time. Compared with the content results determined by the ESM and QAMS, the feasibility and accuracy of QAMS method were verified. Within the linear range, the RCFs of alismoxide, alisol C 23-acetate, alisol A, alismol, alisol B, 11-deoxy-alisol B were 0.946, 4.183, 0.915, 1.039, 0.923 and 1.244, respectively, with good repeatability in different experimental conditions. There was no significant difference between the QAMS method and ESM method. Then, QAMS method was applied to determination of the different degree Alismatis Rhizoma from different areas. As a result, the concentrations of 7 components have differences in different areas, but no significant differences in different grades. The QAMS method is feasible and accurate for the determination of the seven chemical compositions, and which can be used for quality control of Alismatis Rhizoma.

RESUMEN

To investigate the mechanism of a Bushen-Jianpi decoction (BSJPD) in liver cancer (LC) treatment, we analyzed clinical therapy data, conducted network pharmacology analysis, and performed pharmacological experimental verification in vitro and in vivo. The univariate analysis of clinical therapy showed that the BSJPD was protective factor (p < 0.05). The network pharmacology analysis showed that 9 compounds were important nodes of BSJPD-LC therapy network. In experimental verification, the rate of apoptosis increased in the liver tumors of mice treated with the BSJPD (p < 0.05); drug serum with 20 % BSJPD inhibited cell viability (p < 0.05) and reduced the expression of PI3K, the Bcl-xL/BAD ratio, and the levels of p53 and p-Akt in HepG2 cells. Moreover, licochalcone A, alisol B, and hederagenin inhibited cell viability (p < 0.05), induced cell apoptosis (p < 0.01), reduced p-Akt levels, and increased cleaved-CASP3 (p < 0.05) and p53 expression levels in HepG2 cells. These data suggest that the BSJPD prolongs the survival of LC patients and induces apoptosis and that it may be associated with the regulation of PI3K, Akt, p53, CASP3, and Bcl-xL/BAD expression.

RESUMEN

Direct membrane filtration (DMF) is considered as a promising technology for municipal wastewater treatment. We utilized an innovative application of flat-sheet ceramic membranes (FSCM) for DMF for the rapid treatment of domestic sewage. Coagulation was applied before FSCM filtration to increase the pollutant removal and to mitigate membrane fouling. This coagulation-FSCM filtration can significantly reduce the pollutant load on the downstream treatment and concentrate organics and nutrients into sludge to facilitate resource recovery. Using polyaluminum chloride (PACl) based FSCM filtration, approximately 90.0% of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 99.0% of the phosphorus (P) were removed from the sewage influent and retained in the concentrated sludge, with less than 25.0 mg/L COD left in the effluent. Long-term operation of the PACl-based FSCM filtration stably maintained a high flux of 41.7 L/m2-h (LMH, or 1.0 m/d). The fouled membranes were cleaned chemically every 3-5 d, and the membrane permeability could almost be completely recovered using chemical backwash for only 10 min with a diluted acidic, alkaline, chlorine or H2O2 solution. The novel FSCM process will fundamentally advance wastewater treatment technology. It can be readily modularized and installed as simple add-on units to upgrade and retrofit existing wastewater treatment systems.

RESUMEN

A novel acidogenic phosphorus recovery (APR) process was developed in combination with Fe(III)-based chemical phosphorus removal and a membrane bioreactor (MBR) for enhanced wastewater treatment and effective P recovery. Two different system configurations were evaluated: Fe-dosing MBR (Fe-MBR), with the Fe-dosing into the MBR, and Fe-enhanced primary sedimentation followed by the MBR (FeP-MBR). The results show that both systems performed well for enhanced nutrient (N and P) removals and P recovery, with approximately 50% of the total P recovered from the municipal wastewater in the form of vivianite. Compared to the Fe-MBR system, FeP-MBR achieved more efficient P recovery under low food-waste loading conditions, maintained a higher ratio of biomass in activated sludge and experienced a slower rate of membrane fouling. Important functional bacteria were identified, including Prevotella and Selenomonas, which are active in hydrolysis and acidogenesis of sludge, and Aeromonas and Sulfurospirillum, which are involved in dissimilatory iron reduction.

RESUMEN

A new phosphorus (P) removal and recovery process that integrates an FeCl3-dosing, membrane bioreactor (MBR), and side-stream cofermentation was developed for wastewater treatment. The Fe and P species and their transformation mechanisms via aerobic and anaerobic conditions were investigated with X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. In the new treatment system, 98.4% of the total P in domestic wastewater was removed and retained in activated sludge in the MBR. During the subsequent acidogenic cofermentation with food waste, P in the MBR sludge was released and eventually recovered as vivianite, achieving an overall P recovery efficiency of 61.9% from wastewater. The main pathways for P removal and recovery with iron dosing and acidogenic fermentation were determined by XANES analysis. The results showed that Fe-enhanced P removal with the MBR was mainly achieved by precipitation as ferric phosphate (24.2%) and adsorption onto hydrous iron oxides (60.3%). During anaerobic fermentation, transition from Fe(III)-P to Fe(II)-P complex occurred in the sludge, leading to Fe(II) dissolution and P release. The pH decrease and microbial Fe reduction were crucial conditions for effective P extraction from the MBR sludge. The efficiency of P recovery increased with an increase in the fermentation time and organic load and a decrease of pH in the solution.

RESUMEN

An integrated membrane bioreactor (MBR) system was developed for enhanced nutrient (N and P) removal and effective P recovery in wastewater treatment. The system consisted of an iron-dosing MBR and side-stream fermentation for P removal and recovery and side-stream denitrification for N removal. Around 98.1% of the total phosphorus (TP) in wastewater was removed by ferric iron-induced precipitation and membrane filtration in the aerobic MBR, and nearly 53.4% of the TP could be recovered via anaerobic fermentation from the MBR sludge. In addition, the fermenter that allowed acidogenic co-fermentation with food waste provided sufficient soluble organics for biological denitrification, and an overall 91.8% total N removal was achieved through the side-stream denitrification. High-throughput sequencing was applied to analyse the microbial communities in the integrated system, and important functional bacteria were identified for nitrification, denitrification, acidogenic fermentation and dissimilatory iron reduction through the different components of the system.
