Biofilms attached to submerged macrophytes play an important role in improving the water quality of the water environment supplemented with reclaimed water. In order to explore the effects of reclaimed water quality and submerged macrophyte species on the characteristics of an epiphytic bacterial community, different types of submerged macrophytes were selected as research objects in this study. 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing technology was used on the epiphytic bacteria and the surrounding environmental samples to analyze the bacterial community structure and functional genes. The results showed that approximately 20%-35% of the nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients were absorbed and utilized in the water environment supplemented with reclaimed water. However, the COD, turbidity, and chroma of the downstream water were significantly increased. The bacterial community of the biofilms attached to submerged macrophytes was significantly different from that in the surrounding environment (soil, sediment, and water body) and in the activated sludge that was treated by reclaimed water. In terms of bacterial community diversity, the richness and diversity were significantly lower than those of soil and sediment but higher than those of plankton bacteria in water. In terms of bacterial community composition, dominant genera and corresponding abundances were also different from those of other samples. The main dominant bacterial genera were Sphingomonas, Aeromonas, Pseudomonas, and Acinetobacter, accounting for 7%-40%, respectively. Both macrophyte species and the quality of reclaimed water (BOD5, TN, NH4+-N, and TP) could affect the bacterial community. However, the effect of water quality of the bacterial community was greater than that of macrophytes species. Additionally, the quality of reclaimed water also affected the abundance of functional genes in the bacterial community, and the relative abundance of nitrogen and phosphorus cycling functional genes was higher in areas with higher nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations.

BACKGROUND: Tibetan medicine Gaoyuan'an capsule (GYAC) is widely used to prevent pulmonary edema at high altitude, but the specific mechanism has not been explored. In this study, we analyzed the mechanism of GYAC in hypoxia tolerance, and provided a new idea for the prevention and treatment of altitude disease. METHODS: The effective components and corresponding targets of GYAC were screened out by the Chinese herbal medicine network database, and the key targets of hypoxia tolerance were retrieved by Genecards, OMIM and PubMed database. Cytoscape 3.7.2 was used to construct GYAC ingredient-target-hypoxia tolerance-related target network. GO function annotation and KEGG enrichment analysis were performed to predict the pathways in which target genes may be involved, and molecular docking was used to verify the binding ability of the compound to target genes. In vitro, the above results were further verified by molecular experiment. RESULTS: We found that GYAC can improve hypoxia tolerance by regulating various target genes, including IL6, IFNG, etc. The main regulatory pathways were HIF-1 signaling pathway. Molecular docking showed that the affinity between luteolin and target genes (IL6, IFNG) were better. In vitro, we observed that hypoxia can inhibit cell viability and promote apoptosis of H9C2 cell. And hypoxia can promote the expression of LDH. After the addition of luteolin, the decrease of cell viability, the increase of cell apoptosis, LDH release and the decrease of mitochondrial membrane potential were inhibited. Besides, inflammatory related factors (IL-6, IL-10, IL-2, IFNG and VEGFA) expression were also inhibited hypoxic cell models. CONCLUSIONS: The results of network pharmacology and molecular docking showed that luteolin, a monomeric component of GYAC, played a role in hypoxia tolerance through a variety of target genes, such as IL6, IFNG. What's more, we have discovered that luteolin can reduce the inflammatory response in cardiac myocytes, thereby alleviating mitochondrial damage, and ultimately enhancing the hypoxia tolerance of H9C2 cardiomyocytes.

Thistle, Cirsium setosum (Willd.) M. Bieb., is widely distributed in China as a common weed in fields. It is also used as a traditional Chinese medicine for cooling blood, stopping bleeding, dispelling stasis, detoxifying, and resolving carbuncle. In 2023, we found a rust disease on plants of Cirsium setosum in the experimental field of Hebei Agricultural University, Baoding, Hebei Province, China, with incidence of 15% - 25% (Fig. S1 A, B). The diseased leaves turned yellow, and the leaf edges were slightly rolled. The yellow, oil-like pycnia and pycniospores covered the baxial surface of leaves, and brown pustules were produced after 2-3 weeks. On the adaxial surface of the leaves, the brown rust pustules were mainly along the leaf veins. Stems were also be infected later, and dark pustules were scattered. The diseased plants were relatively short and small, and produced relatively small or no flowers compared to healthy plants. A total of 100 plants with typical leaf rust symptoms and signs were collected. To confirm the pathogenicity, healthy plants of thistle were sprayed with 5 ml of urediospores suspension (2.6×105/ml), and plants sprayed with sterile distilled water were treated as control. The sprayed plants were incubated under high moist conditions at 18°C for 24 h, and the inoculated plants were grown at 20°C in a greenhouse. Ten days after inoculation, the plants inoculated with urediniospores showed rust symptoms with uredinia and urediniospores on the leaves (Fig. S1 C), while the control plants were healthy. For morphological characterization, urediospores were picked from the naturally infected plants and placed in a drop of sterile water on a glass slide using a sterile needle, and observed and measured under a microscope. Urediospores were nearly spherical, brown-yellow, and measured 15 - 25 µm in diameter (n=100) (Fig. S1 D). Telia were scattered on the baxial surface of the naturally infected leaves, and teliospores were oval, yellow-brown, double-celled, with very short hyaline pedicels, and measured 15-20 × 15-30 µm (n=100) (Fig. S1 E). For molecular characterization, about 200 µg of urediniospores was collected and placed in a 1.5 ml sterile centrifuge tube, and genomic DNA was extracted using the cetyl-trimethylammonium bromide method (Gawel et al. 1991). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the rDNA and the D1/D2 domain were amplified using primer pairs ITS1/ITS4 (White et al. 1990) and NL1/NL4 (Borhani et al. 2013) in polymerase chain reaction (PCR), respectively. The PCR products were sequenced, and their sequences were aligned and compared with those deposited in GenBank. The obtained sequences were deposited in GenBank (OR600240 for ITS and OR598614 for D1/D2), which were 100% identical with 100% coverage to the ITS sequence (ON063373.1) and the D1/D2 sequence (ON063379.1) of Puccinia suaveolens (Menzies 1953). Based on the morphological characteristics and DNA sequences, the isolates were identified as P. suaveolens (Fig. S1 and Fig. S2). Thistle rust caused by Puccinia obtegens has been reported in some other parts of China (Zhang 2012). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of P. suaveolens causing leaf rust on C. setosum in China. This discovery is helpful for control of leaf rust on thistle grown for Chines medicine and other purposes, and the rust species could be used for biological control of thistle as a weed in crop fields.

Introduction: Auricular acupressure (AA) has been widely utilized in the management of constipation, with several studies suggesting its efficacy in treating constipation patients. However, the safety and effectiveness of AA in constipation remain uncertain. Hence, the aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness and safety of AA for constipation. Methods and analysis: A total of eight electronic databases and three clinical trial registration platforms were searched from their inception to April 2023 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of AA for constipation. The included studies were appraised for quality using the Cochrane Collaboration's Risk of Bias Assessment tool. The quality of evidence was assessed by two independent reviewers employing the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation System (GRADE) evaluation tool. Meta-analysis of data and assessment of publication bias were performed using RevMan 5.4 and STATA 13.0 software, respectively. Results: This review included 34 randomized controlled trials conducted between 2007 and 2023, involving 2,465 participants. The findings of the study indicate that overall, AA is significantly associated with improved CSBMs (MD = 1.22, 95% CI [0.68, 1.77], p < 0.0001, I2 = 0%), BSF (MD = 0.72, 95%CI: [0.15,1.28], p = 0.01, I2 = 82%), CAS (MD = -3.28, 95%CI: [-5.95, -0.60], p = 0.02, I2 = 80%), responder rate (RR = 1.27, 95%CI: [1.16, 1.38], p < 0.00001, I2 = 79%), cure rate (RR = 1.84, 95% CI [1.56, 2.15], p < 0.00001, I2 = 0%), and PAC-QOL (MD = -2.73, 95% CI: [-3.41, -2.04], p < 0.00001, I2 = 98%) compared to the control group. However, no difference in PAC-SYM (MD = -0.15, 95%CI: [-0.38,0.07], p = 0.19, I2 = 67%) was found between the two groups. Additionally, there was no significant difference in adverse events (RR = 0.53, 95% CI: [0.24, 1.21], p = 0.13, I2 = 38%). Conclusion: Based on the available evidence, auricular acupressure appears to be a potentially safe and effective intervention for managing constipation in adults. Nonetheless, the overall quality of evidence for the identified outcomes was assessed as low to very low, highlighting the need for additional high-quality randomized controlled trials to further validate these findings. Dioscorea polystachya (Chinese yam) is a kind of medicine and food homologous crop, the tubers as its main production organ, with high potassium, low fiber, high protein and rich nutrition characteristics. In 2022, at the Chinese herbal medicine planting experimental site in Anguo, Baoding City, Hebei Province, China, we found the symptoms of Chinese yam decay during the storage, with an incidence of 15%~25%. The diseased part of Chinese yam tuber rots expands from the outside to the inside and sags, with a brown or dark brown discoloration, and the surface covered with a thick grayish green mold. The diseased tissue was first rinsed with clean water to remove dirts from the surface. Thereafter, 3 to 4 mm Chinese yam pieces were picked from rotting edge with a sterilized forceps, sterilized with 75% alcohol for 30 s followed by 0.1% mercuric chloride solution for 1min, and then rinsed three times with sterile water. The sterilized pieces were cultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA). One isolated fungus was obtained, and conidia were observed after incubation for 5 days at 26°C. Pure cultures were isolated by single-spore isolation. Conidia were single spore, round or oval, colorless. Conidiophores produce several rounds of symmetric or asymmetric small stems after multiple branches, which were shaped like brooms. The length and width of 100 conidia were measured, and size ranged from 3 to 4×3 to 4 µm. On the basis of morphological characteristics, the isolate was identified as Penicillium spp. (Uy et al. 2022). To further assess the identity of isolated species, the genomic DNA of the fungal isolate (SYRF1) was extracted by CTAB protocol. The ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the ribosomal large subunit (LSU) were amplified and sequenced with primers ITS1/4, LR5/LROR respectively (White et al. 1990, Xu et al. 2010). The obtained ITS-rDNA region and LSU sequences (GenBank accession OQ707937 and OQ704185) of the isolate were more than 99% identity to the corresponding sequences of Penicillium cellarum in GenBank (KM249068 and MG714818). Phylogenetic results based on a maximum-likelihood analysis revealed that SYRF1 was grouped with P. cellarum. To determine the pathogenicity of the isolated fungi, tests were carried out by aseptic inoculation of fresh and healthy tubers. Before the experiment, the healthy tubers were washed, surface disinfected and dried. The tubers were then wounded with sterile inoculation needles, and the conidium-bearing hyphal discs (5 mm) were inoculated on the surface of the wounded tubers and covered with wet sterile cotton. Three tubers were inoculated repeatedly each time as the experimental group. Inoculate sterile PDA with three tubers as the control group. Each tuber was inoculated with four mycelium disks, and the pathogenicity test was repeated four times. The inoculated tubers were incubated at 26°C for 14 days with sterile PDA as control. After ten days, the inoculated points showed symptoms similar to those of the initial infection, whereas controls remained symptomless. The reisolated fungus matched SYRF1 based on morphological and sequence analyses, thereby fulfilling Koch's postulates. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of Penicillium cellarum as causative agent of postharvest rot of Chinese yam tubers in China. This finding will help inform the prevention and management of postharvest diseases of Chinese yam tubers.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common disease with a considerable impact on the patient's quality of life and limited treatment options. Sodium thiosulfate (STS) is a traditional medicine used in the rescue of cyanide poisoning, and some pruritus dermatosis. However, the exact efficacy and mechanism of its application on AD are not clear. In this work, comparing to other traditional therapy, STS was found to effectively improve the severity of skin lesions and the quality of life in AD patients with a dose-dependent manner. Mechanically, STS downregulated the expression of IL-4, IL-13, IgE in the serum of AD patients, as well as reduce the concentration of eosinophils. Furthermore, in the AD-like mice model triggered by ovalbumin (OVA) and calcitriol, STS was found to reduce the epidermal thickness, scratching times, and the infiltration of dermal inflammatory cells in AD mice, as well as the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines in the skin tissue. In HacaT cells, STS inhibited the accumulation of ROS and activation of NLRP3 inflammasome and its downstream IL-1ß expression. Therefore, this study revealed that STS plays an important therapeutic role in AD, and the mechanism may be that STS inhibits the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome and the subsequent release of inflammatory cytokines. Thus, the role of STS in treating AD was clarified and the possible molecular mechanism was revealed.

Synergistic photodynamic and photothermal therapy (PDT-PTT) has emerged as an appealing effective antitumor approach. However, clinical utilization of PDT-PTT is plagued by aggregation-caused photobleaching, sequential double irradiations, unsatisfying balance between single oxygen (1 O2 ) quantum yield and photothermal conversion efficiency. Here, an anchored tumor-homing cell-penetrating peptide (PEGA-pVEC) and PANI-ES/HMME loaded FRET nanobullet (AHP-P) are reported. Within nanobullet, HMME (donor) and PANI-ES (acceptor) spontaneously form a förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) pair. Upon 660 nm laser irradiation, HMME convert near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) to PANI, thus produce FRET-amplified photoacoustic imaging guided PTT. In addition, AHP-P with pH-sensitivity can gradually release HMME within acidic tumor environment, boosts the 1 O2 regeneration alongside with highly efficient photothermal conversion for photoinduced cancer PTT-PDT. Furthermore, the AHP-P nanobullet can home in on the tumor site and penetrate into cytoplasm through PEGA-pVEC, inducing remarkable tumor regression with an ≈80% tumor volume reduction and decreased skin phototoxicity in vivo during FRET-amplified PTT-PDT.

RESUMEN

Many previous studies have shown the potential antipruritic effect of acupuncture. This paper reviews the antipruritic mechanisms of acupuncture according to these aspects: sample characteristics, detail of intervention, and effects evaluation. The majority of research on acupuncture's antipruritic effect has focused on primary afferents of the peripheral mechanism. Relatively few studies, however, have addressed the central mechanisms. Combination the latest research achievements of chronic itch, gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRPR) in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord may represent the first molecule identified that is dedicated to mediating the itch response and may provide an important therapeutic target for the treatment of chronic pruritic conditions. Therefore, GRPR may be a new target for acupuncture to relieve itch in the future and provide new ideas for acupuncture intervention in the mechanisms of the spinal level of the "itch-scratch vicious cycle" of chronic itch.

Autophagy, switched by the AMPK/mTOR signaling, has been revealed to contribute greatly to traumatic brain injury (TBI). Electroacupuncture (EA) is a promising therapeutic method for TBI, however, the underlying mechanism is still unclear. Herein, we hypothesize that the therapeutic effect of EA on TBI is associated with its inhibition on AMPK/mTOR-mediated autophagy. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups: sham, TBI, and TBI + EA. TBI model was established by using an electronic controlled cortical impactor. Rats were treated with EA at 12 h after modeling, 15 min daily for 14 consecutive days. EA was applied at the acupuncture points Quchi (LI 11), Hegu (LI4), Baihui (GV20), Guanyuan (CV4), Zusanli (ST36) and Yongquan (KI1), using dense-sparse wave, at frequencies of 1 Hz, and an amplitude of 1 mA. After 3, 7 and 14 days of modeling, the modified neurological severity scale (mNSS), rota rod system, and Morris Water Maze (MWM) test showed that EA treatment promoted neurological function recovery in TBI rats. Moreover, EA treatment alleviated brain edema, pathological damage, neuronal apoptosis in TBI rats. EA improved abnormal ultrastructure, including abnormal mitochondrial morphology and increased autophagosomes, in the brain neurons of TBI rats, as measured by transmission electron microscopy, and the concentration of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), adenosine diphosphate (ADP), and adenosine monophosphate (AMP). Western blot and immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays were performed to measure the protein levels of interleukin 10 (IL-10), autophagy-related proteins and key proteins in the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway. EA treatment increased IL-10 production, inhibited the AMPK/mTOR signaling, and inhibited excessive autophagy in TBI rats. Additionally, AMPK inhibitor Compound C treatment had similar effects to EA. Both AMPK agonist AICAR and IL-10 neutralizing antibody treatments reversed the effects of EA on the related protein levels of autophagy and the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway, and abolished the protective effects of EA on TBI rats. In conclusion, EA treatment promoted neurological function recovery and alleviated pathological damage and neuronal apoptosis in TBI rats through inhibiting excessive autophagy via increasing IL-10 production and blocking the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Immune-related cutaneous diseases are a series of disorders, such as alopecia areata, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, systemic lupus erythematosus and autoimmune bullous dermatoses. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which is known for its classical pleiotropic effect. Recent studies have found that vitamin D, after catalyzed into its biologically active form [1,25(OH) 2D], correlated with its receptor, vitamin D receptor, plays a vital role in multiple pathophysiological processes, including immune-related dermatoses. This review mainly summarizes evidence on the role of vitamin D/vitamin D receptor in immune-related cutaneous diseases and the potential therapeutic targets for skin disorders. METHODS: We have carried out a comprehensive literature search in PubMed and Google Scholar databases using keywords like "vitamin D", "vitamin D receptor", "immune", "psoriasis", "atopic dermatitis", "skin", "systemic lupus erythematosus", "alopecia areata" and "autoimmune bullous dermatoses". Only articles related to the topic were included in this review. Conference, patent, graduation thesis and articles without available full text were excluded. RESULTS: Vitamin D/vitamin D receptor is critical for skin in regulating the proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes, keeping the integrity of the skin barrier as well as maintaining the homeostasis of the "skin's immune system". Vitamin D deficiency/vitamin D receptor mutations are potential risk factors for some immune-related cutaneous diseases. CONCLUSION: Vitamin D is a pleiotropic hormone, which is important in the homeostasis of human body. Many studies have revealed vitamin D deficiency in several skin diseases. Thus, vitamin D supplementation may be a useful therapeutic option for immune-related skin diseases.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: We aim to investigate the effects and mechanisms of electroacupuncture (EA) at ST25 and ST37 on the intestinal low-grade inflammation (LGI) in rat model of Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). METHODS: IBS-D model rats were established by acetic acid enema combined with restraint and tail clamping. Before EA intervention, they were divided into three groups: blank 1 group, blank 2 group, and IBS-D model group. Diarrhea symptoms and visceral pain sensitivity were evaluated. After constructed the model successfully, the remaining IBS-D model group rats were randomly divided into model group and EA group. Local intestinal inflammation (HE staining), changes of intestinal mucosa (occludin protein and microvascular diameter) were evaluated. Differences between two groups were compared using t-test or Mann-Whitney U-test. Differences among more than two groups were compared using one-way ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test. RESULTS: After modeling, the results of HE staining in intestinal tract of IBS-D model rats showed LGI. Compared with the model group, 4 h fecal moisture content (diarrhea index) and the AWR score were decreased in the EA group. The results of HE in EA group showed that the infiltration of intestinal inflammatory cells were alleviated. Additionally, EA significantly upregulated the expression of occludin protein and partially dilated the intestinal microvascular diameter. Pearson correlation analysis showed that the symptoms of IBS-D rats were correlated with the changes of intestinal mucosa. CONCLUSION: EA may treat intestinal LGI in IBS-D rats by upregulating the expression of occludin protein and dilating the intestinal microvascular diameter.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly aggressive subtype of breast cancer that is prone to recurrence and metastasis. Because of the lack of expression of estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) in TNBC, treatment methods are greatly limited. In this study, the proliferation inhibition and apoptosis-inducing effects of PARP1 inhibitors in TNBC breast cancer cells and in vivo xenograft animal models were examined to investigate the molecular role of APE1 in PARP1-targeted therapy. In TNBC patients, the expression of APE1 and PARP1 were positively correlated, and high expression of APE1 and PARP1 was associated with poor survival of TNBC. Our results indicated that knockdown APE1 could increase the sensitivity of olaparib in the treatment of TNBC. In conclusion, the results of this study will not only clarify the molecular role of APE1 in PARP1-targeted therapy for TNBC but also provide a theoretical basis for the future clinical application of targeting APE1 and PARP1 in the treatment of refractory TNBC.

Podophyllotoxin (POD), a natural lignan distributed in podophyllum species, possesses significant antitumor and antiviral activities. But POD often causes serious side effects, such as myelosuppression, gastrointestinal toxicity, neurotoxicity, hepatic and renal dysfunction, and even death, which not only hinder its clinical application but also threaten the patient's health. Therefore, an effective treatment against POD-induced toxicity is important. Our preliminary study found that the total saponins from the stems and leaves of Panax quinquefolius L. (PQS) could significantly reduce the death of mice caused by POD. To reveal how PQS can alleviate POD-induced toxicity, further study was needed. Peripheral blood cell analysis, diarrhea score, and histological examination demonstrated that PQS could relieve myelosuppression and gastrointestinal side effects induced by POD. Then, metabolomics was performed to investigate the possible protective mechanism of PQS on POD-induced myelosuppression and gastrointestinal toxicity. Metabolomics analysis showed that metabolic changes caused by POD could be reversed by PQS to some extent; 23 metabolites altered significantly after POD exposure, and 11 metabolites significantly reversed by PQS pretreatment. Metabolic pathway analysis suggested that PQS might exhibit its protective effects by rebalancing disordered arginine, glutamine, and unsaturated fatty acid metabolism.

In this study, the eutrophication levels and nitrogen and phosphorus carrying capacities of Lake Changhu in Jingzhou, Hubei Province, China, were measured using the trophic level index (TLI) and Dillon model for the first time. The measurements were taken before (2013 and 2015) and after (2017 and 2018) the removal of pen aquaculture from the lake. The lake was divided into three districts: Lake Haizihu, Mahongtai Channel, and Lake Dahu. The results showed total nitrogen (TN), chemical oxygen demand (COD), chlorophyll a (Chl-a), and total suspended solid values were significantly higher in 2017 than in the other years. The Lake Haizihu district was predicted to be more seriously polluted than the other districts. In the sediment, the organic matter, STN (TN in sediment) and STP (TP in sediment) contents increased from 2013 to 2018. The mean TLI values ranged from 62.99 to 78.93 in the studied years, and the eutrophication level was highest in 2017. According to the Dillon model, when the target water quality was level III (GB 3838-2002, Ministry of Environmental Protection of China, 2002), the remaining TN and TP loading capacities were -1470.72 t/a and -182.74 t/a, respectively, in 2015, and 320.03 t/a and -111.14 t/a, respectively, in 2018. Our results provide valuable and integrated information about the water conditions of Lake Changhu, thus laying a foundation for the theoretical study of water eutrophication process in lakes and paving the way for informed decision-making for managing water environments to ensure the safety of ecology.

Exercise intervention has a positive effect on reducing the fall risk in older adults. To investigate the effect of different factors of exercise intervention (type, duration, and frequency) on reducing the fall risk in older adults, a meta-analysis was performed in this study. According to the PRISMA®, two researchers independently searched PubMed, Web of Science, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases to assess the quality of the studies using the PEDro scale. A total of 648 subjects in 10 randomized controlled trials were included in this study, and the exercise interventions included integrated training (resistance training, core training, and balance training), balance training, core training, Pilates, Ba Duan Jin, and Tai Chi. These studies show that exercise intervention has a huge and significant impact on reducing the risk of falls of the elderly. In conclusion, an integrated intervention with a frequency of more than five times a week and a duration of more than 32 weeks are more effective in reducing the fall risk.

Depressive symptoms have been found to be highly prevalent among patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and seriously affect the patients' quality of life. However, most psychotropic drugs have warnings about potential side effects. Accordingly, safer effective alternatives are urgently demanded. Angina pectoris of CHD is considered as "chest stuffiness and heartache syndrome" in traditional Chinese medicine, with the major syndrome type named Qi stagnation and blood stasis. Qi-regulating and blood circulation-promoting therapy has increasingly shown unique advantages in CHD patients. This study investigated the efficacy of Xuefu Zhuyu decoction, a representative prescription of Qi-regulating and blood circulation-promoting therapy, on angina pectoris patients with depressive symptoms. Depressive symptoms were stratified at baseline in 30 patients with stable angina pectoris who participated in both baseline and 12-week follow-up studies. After performing a stratified analysis, the angina pectoris-specific health status and traditional Chinese medicine "chest stuffiness and heartache syndrome" were evaluated by self-reports using the associated questionnaire scales, respectively. We measured serum concentrations of serotonin, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and ATP, which are associated with the development of depression. We found that the Xuefu Zhuyu granule significantly improved the angina pectoris-specific health status in patients after 12 weeks of treatment; specifically, it had a better curative effect on patients with depressive symptoms. Xuefu Zhuyu granule also significantly improved the chest stuffiness and heartache syndrome in patients with depressive symptoms (efficacy index is 61.24%, P < 0.05 versus baseline). Interestingly, Xuefu Zhuyu granule has been found to be more susceptible to improving ATP levels in patients with depressive symptoms, indicating that the improvement in serum ATP levels might account for the better efficacy of Xuefu Zhuyu granule in patients with depressive symptoms. Our data provide prospective evidence that Xuefu Zhuyu granule improves angina pectoris-specific health status through regulating Qi and promoting blood circulation. OBJECTIVE: Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) is a common and high incidence disease in gynecology, which seriously affects the quality of life in young women. Our previous study found that mild moxibustion could treat abdominal pain of PD patients, but the mechanism is still unclear. Therefore, this study aims to partly investigate the treatment mechanism of moxibustion for PD, especially on uterine microcirculation. METHODS: Forty 3-month-old Sprague Dawley female rats were randomly divided into four groups, including group A (saline control group, n = 10), group B (control plus moxibustion group, n = 10), group C (PD model group, n = 10), group D (PD. model plus moxibustion group, n = 10). The PD rat model was established by injecting estradiol benzoate and oxytocin. Mild moxibustion on Sanyinjiao (SP6) and Guanyuan (CV4) acupoints was once a day, 20 minutes per time, for 10 consecutive days. A vaginal smear was used to test the estrous cycle of rats. Uterine microvascular thickness was observed by stereomicroscope. And we detected the content of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α ) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in uterine tissue by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: Mild moxibustion can enlarge the microvessels, improve the microcirculation disturbance, and relieve the swelling of the uterus in PD rats. During the mild moxibustion intervention, the contents of PGF2α and PGE2 in uterus issues were synchronous increases or decreases and the changes of PGE2 were more obvious, but the changes of uterine microvasculature and morphology caused by the decrease of PGF2α were greater than PGE2. CONCLUSION: Mild moxibustion at SP6 and CV4 acupoints may relax uterine microvascular obstacle by reducing the content of PGF2α in uterine tissue, improve the microcirculation disorder, and then alleviate the PD rat's uterine swelling.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the changes of symptoms, Chinese medicine (CM) syndrome, and lung inflammation absorption during convalescence in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who had not totally recovered after hospital discharge and whether CM could promote the improvement process. METHODS: This study was designed as a prospective cohort and nested case-control study. A total of 96 eligible patients with COVID-19 in convalescence were enrolled from Beijing Youan Hospital and Beijing Huimin Hospital and followed up from the hospital discharged day. Patients were divided into the CM (64 cases) and the control groups (32 cases) based on the treatment with or without CM and followed up at 14, 28, 56, and 84 days after discharge. In the CM group, patients received the 28-day CM treatment according to two types of CM syndrome. Improvements in clinical symptoms, CM syndrome, and absorption of lung inflammation were observed. RESULTS: All the 96 patients completed the 84-day follow-up from January 21 to March 28, 2020. By the 84th day of follow-up, respiratory symptoms were less than 5%. There was no significant difference in the improvement rates of symptoms, including fatigue, sputum, cough, dry throat, thirst, and upset, between the two groups (P>0.05). Totally 82 patients (85.42%) showed complete lung inflammation absorption at the 84-day follow-up. On day 14, the CM group had a significantly higher absorption rate than the control group (P<0.05) and the relative risk of absorption for CM vs. control group was 3.029 (95% confidence interval: 1.026-8.940). The proportions of CM syndrome types changed with time prolonging: the proportion of the pathogen residue syndrome gradually decreased, and the proportion of both qi and yin deficiency syndrome gradually increased. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with COVID-19 in convalescence had symptoms and lung inflammation after hospital discharge and recovered with time prolonging. CM could improve lung inflammation for early recovery. The types of CM syndrome can be transformed with time prolonging. (Registration No. ChiCTR2000029430).

PURPOSE: WIC provides food assistance to low-income pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and children ages 1- 4. A partial redemption (PR) occurs when a participant redeems only a portion of the prescribed benefit, thereby not obtaining the full nutritional benefit. We study the magnitude and determinants of PRs using electronic benefit transfer data. DESIGN/SETTING: Statistical analysis of all WIC transactions from Feb 2016 to Nov 2018. SUBJECTS: Oklahoma WIC participants. MEASURES: The probability of a WIC household fully redeeming a food category. A random effects probit model is used to study determinants of PRs. ANALYSIS: Estimate the marginal effects of key variables on households' likelihood of full redemption: location-urban/rural, number of members in WIC, duration in the program, number of shopping trips, shopping venue, and prescribed foods. RESULTS: Overall 18.5% of $ value of benefits are unredeemed, 29.3% excluding formula. Some foods have PRs > 40%. Only 17.3% of households fully redeem benefits in a given month. PRs increase with number of household members in WIC and duration of participation. PRs are lower for participants in rural locations, who shop more frequently, and who shop at WIC-specialized stores. CONCLUSIONS: Food packages with high PRs fail to impart prescribed benefits. Results pinpoint products and household characteristics associated with PRs, enabling targeted nutritional counseling and suggest food package choices need to be made with participant acceptance in mind.

SARS-CoV-2 is the seventh member of the family of coronaviruses that can cause infections in humans, termed as COVID-19, which is now a global pandemic. Because it is a novel virus, considerable efforts and extensive studies are needed to fully understand its characteristics. Its symptoms and severity range from mild to critical, depending on several factors, such as host susceptibility to the virus and their immune system, with the most common symptoms being fever, fatigue, sore throat and runny nose. There is no clear treatment available yet, though several options are being explored, with research for vaccines being at the forefront. Traditional Chinese Medicine may also be used as a treatment option. Since this virus is similar to the SARS-CoV and MERS viruses, considerable insight can be gained from previous studies. Although many patients recover completely, there are several factors that lead to poor prognosis. This review summarizes the research carried out so far in terms of treatment options and prognosis factors associated with COVID-19.
