RESUMEN
Ginsenosides are a class of natural products with hormone-like activity of triterpenoid saponins and have a variety of pharmacological activities such as anti-aging, immune regulation and cognitive improvement. With the great research interest in alternative medicine and natural products, they are gradually becoming research hotspots. Ginsenosides have a four-ring rigid steroid backbone similar to steroid hormones, and a series of experimental studies have shown that they can exhibit hormone-like activity by binding to nuclear receptors or affecting hormone levels, thereby affecting a wide range of inflammatory conditions, cancers, and menopause-related diseases. This review summarizes the mechanisms and potential health effects of ginsenosides exhibiting estrogen-like, glucocorticoid-like and androgen-like activities, providing an important reference for the exploration of safe phytohormone replacement therapy.

Hazel leaf, a by-product of hazelnuts, is commonly used in traditional folk medicine in Portugal, Sweden, Iran and other regions for properties such as vascular protection, anti-bleeding, anti-edema, anti-infection, and pain relief. Based on our previous studies, the polyphenol extract from hazel leaf was identified and quantified via HPLC fingerprint. The contents of nine compounds including kaempferol, chlorogenic acid, myricetin, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, resveratrol, luteolin, gallic acid and ellagic acid in hazel leaf polyphenol extract (ZP) were preliminary calculated, among which kaempferol was the highest with 221.99 mg/g, followed by chlorogenic acid with 8.23 mg/g. The inhibition of ZP on α-glucosidase and xanthine oxidase activities was determined via the chemical method, and the inhibition on xanthine oxidase was better. Then, the effect of ZP on hyperuricemia zebrafish was investigated. It was found that ZP obviously reduced the levels of uric acid, xanthine oxidase, urea nitrogen and creatinine, and up-regulated the expression ofOAT1 and HPRT genes in hyperuricemia zebrafish. Finally, the targeted network pharmacological analysis and molecular docking of nine polyphenol compounds were performed to search for relevant mechanisms for alleviating hyperuricemia. These results will provide a valuable basis for the development and application of hazel leaf polyphenols as functional ingredients.

Hazel leaf, one of the by-products of hazelnut, which is widely used in traditional folk medicine around the world. In the present study, the profile of free, conjugated, and bound phenolic compounds from hazel leaf was detected and their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities were investigated. The potential health benefits of different phenolic compounds were also predicted. The results showed that the 35 phenolic substances of free, conjugated and bound forms were identified including phenolic acids, flavonoids and catechins. Most of the hazel leaf phenolics were presented in free form, followed by conjugated and bound form. All the fractions effectively inhibited the production of reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde in TBHP-stimulated human umbilical vein endothelial cells by enhancing endogenous superoxide dismutase, and accordingly alleviated inflammatory cytokines (NO, IL-1ß, TNF-α, and IL-6) in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, showing obvious antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacity. Moreover, combined with network pharmacology, the potential therapeutic effects and functional pathways of hazel leaf phenolics were predicted, which provided value basis for exploring their treatment on diseases and developing health products in the future.
RESUMEN
A cross-sectional study method combined with two types of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) syndrome differentiation methods was adopted to investigate the clinical symptoms and distribution characteristics of TCM syndromes in patients with pulmonary nodules from the perspectives of number, size, nature, and stability of pulmonary nodules by using the χ~2 test, systematic clustering and Apriori algorithm correlation analysis. The common clinical symptoms of pulmonary nodules were fatigue(77.35%) and irritability(75.40%), and 40 symptoms were clustered into 3 groups(digestive system symptoms, respiratory system symptoms, and emotional and systemic symptoms) and 8 major symptom categories. The proportion of cold and heat in complexity syndrome(63.43%) was higher based on cold-heat syndrome differentiation. The top two syndromes were Qi deficiency syndrome(88.03%) and Qi depression syndrome(83.17%) based on disease syndrome differentiation. Yang deficiency syndrome(60.52%) was more than Yin deficiency syndrome(50.16%). There were higher proportions of phlegm syndrome(78.67%) and Yang deficiency syndrome(69.33%) of so-litary pulmonary nodules in terms of the number of pulmonary nodules. In terms of size, the proportion of phlegm syndrome decreased as the mean diameter of pulmonary nodules increased, while the proportions of Yang deficiency syndrome and blood stasis syndrome increased. The distribution of Qi depression syndrome was more in those with mean diameter<10 mm(85.02%, P=0.044) and cold syndrome was more in those with mean diameter ≥10 mm(16.67%, P=0.024). In terms of the nature of pulmonary nodules, the proportions of Qi depression syndrome and heat syndrome decreased with the increase in solid components of pulmonary nodules, while the proportions of Yin deficiency syndrome and cold and heat in complexity syndrome increased. The blood stasis syndrome accounted for a higher proportion of pulmonary nodules with solid components. In terms of the stability of pulmonary nodules, dampness syndrome(72.97%), blood stasis syndrome(37.84%), and cold and heat in complexity syndrome(70.27%) accounted for higher proportions. In addition, patients with new nodules presented higher proportions in Qi inversion syndrome(52.00%, P=0.007) and cold and heat in complexity syndrome(66.00%, P=0.008). Meanwhile, 11 syndromes were associated and 4 common compound syndromes were obtained(Qi deficiency and depression syndrome, Qi depression and phlegm coagulation syndrome, Qi deficiency and phlegm coagulation syndrome, and Qi deficiency and dampness obstruction syndrome). Qi deficiency syndrome and Qi depression syndrome could be associated with other syndromes. The results show that the main clinical symptoms of pulmonary nodules are fatigue and irritability. The main TCM syndromes of pulmonary nodules are Qi deficiency syndrome, Qi depression syndrome, Yang deficiency syndrome, and cold and heat in complexity syndrome. The distribution of TCM syndromes is significantly correlated with the size of pulmonary nodules and the presence or absence of new nodules. The common compound syndromes are Qi deficiency and depression syndrome, Qi depression and phlegm coagulation syndrome, Qi deficiency and phlegm coagulation syndrome, and Qi deficiency and dampness obstruction syndrome.

Ginsenosides, as the most important constituents of ginseng, have been extensively investigated in cancer chemoprevention and therapeutics. Among the ginsenosides, Compound K (CK), a rare protopanaxadiol type of ginsenoside, has been most broadly used for cancer treatment due to its high anticancer bioactivity. However, the functional mechanism of CK in cancer is not well known. This review describes the structure, transformation and pharmacological activity of CK and discusses the functional mechanisms of CK and its metabolites, which regulate signaling pathways related to tumor growth and metastasis. CK inhibits tumor growth by inducing tumor apoptosis and tumor cell differentiation, regulates the tumor microenvironment by suppressing tumor angiogenesis-related proteins, and downregulates the roles of immunosuppressive cells, such as myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). There is currently much research on the potential development of CK as a new strategy when administered alone or in combination with other compounds.

Panax ginseng (PG) and Veratrum nigrum (VN) are the most representative incompatibility herb pair in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). This theory is derived from long-term clinical practice and has been applied for thousands of years. However, its mechanism has not yet been clearly investigated. The purpose of this work is to examine the incompatible effects of PG and VN on estrogen decline in rats to better understand the adverse effects of inappropriate herbal combinations using metabolomics and gut microbiota. The ovariectomized rats were administered with PG, VN and their combination decoction decoction intragastrically. After the combination of PG and VN, the improvement of depression-like behavior, neurotransmitter of brain, serum estrogen levels on ovariectomized rats was decreased; the regulation of PG on eight metabolic biomarkers and four intestinal bacteria was reduced by metabolomic and gut microbiota analysis. In addition, the correlation analysis revealed that the above four gut flora showed a relative trend with the significant metabolites of Pantothenic acid, 4, 6-Dihydroxyquinoline, Chenodeoxycholic acid and Caprylic acid. They were involved in tryptophan metabolism, pantothenic acid and coenzyme A biosynthesis, fatty acid biosynthesis and primary bile acid biosynthesis. These results provide further insight into the pathway by which PG and VN combine to reduce the therapeutic effects of estrogen decline. It is helpful to comprehend the incompatible mechanisms of PG and VN.

Endangered animal medicine is an important part of traditional Chinese medicine, which is distinctive in the treatment of diseases. At present, the rare and endangered medicinal materials such as tiger bone, rhinoceros horn, pangolin, antelope horn, bear bile are listed as national key protected animals, so their clinical application is limited, the current solution is mainly based on the ideas and methods of similar pharmacological effects, close genetic relationships, artificial breeding, and artificial synthesis to find and develop alternatives for endangered animal medicinal materials. Although artificially cultured bear bile and musk, and artificially synthesized tiger bone, bezoar and musk can solve the shortage of endangered animal medicines to a certain extent, there are still some problems such as difficult breakthroughs in breeding technology and incomplete recognition in the substitute industry. According to this, based on summarizing the existing substitutes for endangered animal medicines, our group proposed the concept of homology, homogeneity and equivalent of substitutes, and constructed a new idea to develop and evaluate substitutes by combining frontier biotechnology with multi-omics detection, so as to provide some support for protecting rare and endangered animals and solving the shortage of endangered animal medicines.
RESUMEN
The coronavirus disease 2019 has infected over 150 million people worldwide and led to over 3 million deaths. Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-CoV-2 lineages B.1.1.7, B.1.617, B.1.351, and P.1 were reported to have higher infection rates than that of wild one. These mutations were noticed to happen in the receptor-binding domain of spike protein (S-RBD), especially mutations N501Y, E484Q, E484K, K417N, K417T, and L452R. Currently, there is still no specific medicine against the virus; moreover, cytokine storm is also a dangerous factor for severe infected patients. In this study, potential S-RBD-targeted active monomers from traditional Chinese medicine Ephedra sinica Stapf (ephedra) were discovered by virtual screening. NanoBiT assay was performed to confirm blocking activities of the screened compounds against the interaction between SARS-CoV-2 S-RBD and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). We further analyzed the blocking effect of the active compounds on the interactions of mutated S-RBD and ACE2 by computational studies. Moreover, antiinflammatory activities were evaluated using qRT-PCR, enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay, and Western blot analysis. As a result, pseudoephedrine (MHJ-17) and its derivative (MHJ-11) were found as efficient inhibitors disrupting the interactions between ACE2 and both wild and mutated S-RBDs. In addition, they also have antiinflammatory activities, which can be potential drug candidates or lead compounds for further study.

OBJECTIVE: Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is mainly characterized by bone erosion, new bone formation, inflammation and potential disability. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has been proved to be closely related with the regulation of inflammation and bone metabolism. However, whether EGCG could improve SpA remains unclear. METHODS: SpA animal model was established using proteoglycan. Cell proliferation were measured by CCK-8 assay. The mRNA expression levels of genes were detected using qRT-PCR, protein levels were assessed via western blotting and immunohistochemistry. ELISA assay was performed to examined the inflammatory cytokine release. Lesions in spine cartilage tissues were observed using hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and Safranin O staining. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) assay and Alizarin Red S staining was used to investigate osteoblast mineralization. RESULTS: We found that EGCG could inhibit inflammation and new bone formation in SpA mice. Besides, inflammatory factor expression and osteogenic differentiation in osteoblasts isolated from SpA mice were also decreased by EGCG. Further, EGCG treatment suppressed the activation of Wnt/ß-Catenin/COX-2 pathway and the activator of this pathway partially reversed the effects of EGCG on inflammation and osteoblast differentiation. CONCLUSIONS: EGCG repressed inflammatory responses and new bone formation, and further improved SpA through Wnt/ß-Catenin/COX-2 pathway. Our findings may provide a new thought for the prevention and treatment of SpA.

The tumor microenvironment (TME) is composed of tumor cells, blood/lymphatic vessels, the tumor stroma, and tumor-infiltrating myeloid precursors (TIMPs) as a sophisticated pathological system to provide the survival environment for tumor cells and facilitate tumor metastasis. In TME, TIMPs, mainly including tumor-associated macrophage (TAM), tumor-associated dendritic cells (DCs), and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), play important roles in repressing the antitumor activity of T cell or other immune cells. Therefore, targeting those cells would be one novel efficient method to retard cancer progression. Numerous studies have shown that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has made extensive research in tumor immunotherapy. In the review, we demonstrate that Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) and its components induce tumor cell apoptosis, directly inhibiting tumor growth and invasion. Further, we discuss that TCM regulates TME to promote effective antitumor immune response, downregulates the numbers and function of TAMs/MDSCs, and enhances the antigen presentation ability of mature DCs. We also review the therapeutic effects of TCM herbs and their ingredients on TIMPs in TME and systemically analyze the regulatory mechanisms of TCM on those cells to have a deeper understanding of TCM in tumor immunotherapy. Those investigations on TCM may provide novel ideas for cancer treatment.
RESUMEN
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a common, lethal interstitial lung disease characterized by airway remodeling, inflammation, alveolar destruction, and fibrosis. The mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1/4E binding protein 1 (mTORC1/4E-BP1) axis is closely related to the expression of collagen by fibroblasts, and its role in pulmonary fibrosis remains to be further elucidated. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has shown promising efficacy in improving the lung function, exercise capacity, and quality of life in patients with IPF. The theory of "same treatment for different diseases" provides a TCM theoretical basis for the treatment of pulmonary fibrosis with Bupleuri Radix, while the research in western medicine has preliminarily shown that both the formulation and single herb as well as the active ingredients of Bupleuri Radix have good therapeutic effects on pulmonary fibrosis. Therefore, this review will elaborate on the role of the mTORC1/4E-BP1 axis in the pathomechanism of IPF, as well as the research results of the active components of Bupleuri Radix on the phosphoinositide 3-kinase/protein kinase B/mammalian target of rapamycin protein(PI3K/AKT/mTOR) pathway, so as to provide a reference for the treatment and drug development of IPF.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to explore the prevalence of change in bone mineral density (BMD) and the potential risk factors for osteopenia and osteoporosis in rheumatic patients. METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study design was carried out. For this study, one thousand and seven rheumatic patients were recruited and further accepted for data collection and blood and BMD tests. The potential risk factors for osteopenia and osteoporosis in rheumatic patients were further analyzed by using both logistic regression analysis and random forest (RF) analysis. RESULTS: 41.1% of the male patients aged 50 years or above and 50.8% of postmenopausal patients were osteoporotic in their lumbar spine. Among these patients, the prevalence of osteoporosis in the femoral neck and total hip was 19.4% and 8.9% in men, and 27.6% and 16.5% in women respectively, while more than half of the rheumatic patients had osteopenia in the femoral neck and total hip. For men younger than 50 years and premenopausal women, BMD were lower than the health population in the femoral neck (16.5% and 18.3% respectively) and the total hip (17.4% and 10.4% respectively). Older age, body mass index (BMI) <18.5 kg/m2, female sex and glucocorticoid use were associated with lower BMD in the lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total hip of patients. In RF analysis, age was ranked as the most important factor for osteopenia in the lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total hip of patients, followed by glucocorticoid use and BMI. CONCLUSIONS: More interventions should be given to osteopenia patients because of the higher prevalence when compared with osteoporosis patients. Older age, BMI <18.5 kg/m2, female sex and glucocorticoid use were associated with lower BMD in rheumatic patients. The results from the logistic regression can be supplemented by random forest analysis.

The flavonoid compound scutellarin (Scu) is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat a variety of diseases; however, the use of scutellarein (Scue), the hydrolysate of Scu, and its mechanisms of action in Alzheimer's disease (AD) have not been fully elucidated. In the present study, the effects of Scue on amyloid ß (Aß)-induced AD-like pathology were investigated. An in vitro model of inflammation and an aged rat model were used to confirm the effects of Scue. In vitro MTT assays and flow cytometry were used to assess the effects of Scue on cell viability and apoptosis, respectively. A Morris water maze was used to evaluate spatial learning and memory, and the levels of Aß deposition, superoxide dismutase, malondialdehyde, apoptosis, neuro-inflammatory factors and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activation in hippocampal tissues in vivo were measured to determine the effect of Scue in AD. Scue may be protective, as it decreased the apoptosis of hippocampal cells in vitro, inhibited Aß-induced cognitive impairment, suppressed hippocampal neuro-inflammation and suppressed activation of NF-κB in vivo. Therefore, Scue may be a useful agent for the treatment of Aß-associated pathology in the central nervous system through inhibition of the protein kinase B/NF-κB signaling pathway and thus, future studies are required to investigate the efficacy of Scue in patients with AD.
RESUMEN
Estrogens are biologically active steroid hormones mainly released from the ovary by ovarian secretion of estrogen into the circulating blood to regulate or function at the distal target. Estrogens play an important role in the central nervous system, cardiovascular system and immune system, especially for post-menopausal women. Panax ginseng Mayer has been reported to relieve women's menopausal symptoms and affect estrogen activities. However, the mechanism of its estrogen regulation has not yet been clearly investigated. In this work, ovariectomized rats were administered a P. ginseng decoction intragastrically for 8 weeks. Urine samples were analyzed by ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) to identify metabolites. The estrous cycle, body weight, uterine weight index and serum hormone levels were measured. The results showed that P. ginseng significantly prolonged the estrus stage, decreased the body weight and serum luteinizing hormone (LH) levels and increased the uterine weight index and serum estradiol (E2) levels of ovariectomized rats. A total of twelve potential biomarkers for which levels changed markedly upon treatment have been identified based on metabolomics. A systematic network analysis of their corresponding pathways indicates that the antagonistic effect of P. ginseng on ovariectomized rats occurs mainly through regulating steroid hormone metabolism, fatty acid biosynthesis, the citric acid cycle and tryptophan metabolism. In conclusion, this study validated the antagonistic effect of P. ginseng in rats with estrogen decline and explored the metabolic and biochemical mechanisms involved.

RESUMEN
Nowadays, the cultivation of traditional Chinese medicinal materials is faced with the problems of pesticides illegal uses and pesticides residues. In the early period of eco-agriculture of Chinese materia medica, the uses of pesticides in special time is still inevitable. However, the registration of pesticides for Chinese medicinal materials now is far from enough to meet demand. So it is necessary to publish policies to expand the pesticides registration for Chinese medicinal materials. We collected and analyzed the data of pesticide registration for Chinese medicinal materials, the results showed that till March 2018, there were 10 kinds of Chinese medicinal materials, 91 pesticide products and 46 kinds of pesticide ingredients registered. Based on the current status of the pesticide management in China and the experience of the registration pesticide for minor crops in countries around the world, we point out that the pesticide registration for Chinese medicinal materials should be carried out in the form of minor crops and some specific methods are also provided in this paper.
